Abstract:This study investigates the impact of public-private partnerships investment in energy in energy and FDI on environmental quality in global investment countries during 1995–2018. Economic growth, technological innovations and consumption of clean energy are also considered as additional determinants of environmental quality. The study applied advanced panel econometric models. Our empirical results affirm the evidence of a long-run association between environmental quality and its determinants. Specifically, economic growth as well as clean energy use improves quality of environment by lowering carbon emissions. Public-private partnerships investment in energy in energy, FDI and technological innovations decrease carbon emissions. Energy consumption (generated from fossil fuel) increases carbon emissions. Heterogeneous causality evidence indicates the presence of a unidirectional causality relation from carbon emissions to public-private partnerships investment in energy in energy and a feedback causality occurs between consumption of clean energy and CO 2 emissions. This empirical evidence provides new insights for both policymakers and governments to support public-private partnership investments in energy in energy for the improvement of quality of environment in global investment countries.

Abstract:The current investigation examines causal relation between PPP investment in energy sector and CO2 emissions in selected developing countries by using non-parametric causality in quantiles and linear granger causality techniques. Range of the data is from January 1998 to December 2016. Although results obtained by linear granger causality test does not report any causal relation between PPP investment in energy and CO2 emissions, but findings from non-parametric test show that non-linear relationship exhibit between variables. The non-parametric outcomes indicate that PPP investment in non-renewable energy in the selected countries contribute to carbon emissions and thus degrade environment. And therefore, the need is to divert PPP investment to renewable energy where it is more effective. This investigation provides valuable information to policy-makers in developing countries to think out of box and address pressing environmental issues.

Abstract:Given the substantial financial requirements, greening the capital-intensive based infrastructure like transport requires pondering upon new innovative strategies. As the public sector has demonstrated a lack of sufficient funds in numerous instances, promoting the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) has become a promising pathway toward green transportation. However, the role that PPP investments in the transportation sector in reducing transport CO 2 emissions (TCO 2 e) on the road to meeting the sustainable development goals (SDGs) has received minimal attention. In this context, this study investigates the impact of PPP in the transportation sector and renewable energy on TCO 2 e for Mexico from 1990 to 2022, while controlling economic and urban settlement growth. For a novel attempt, this study leverages several modern econometric methodologies, such as the Augmented and Dynamic ARDL which allows estimating long-run and short-run elasticities vis-à-vis future scenario analysis. Results divulge that the PPP in transport curbs TCO 2 e over the short term, but the long-term effect is insignificant. Moreover, findings uncover that while the usage of renewable energy strengthens environmental circumstances, a rise in the urban population has a short-term negative impact on TCO 2 e. Moreover, the economic progress boosts Mexico's TCO 2 e and has a more devastating long-term effect, which is contradictory to the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. The current study suggests that in order to advance the nation's green transportation system, authorities in Mexico should implement several measures to increase the pie of renewable energy and effective public-private partnership investment in the transportation sector.

Abstract:The scholars of environmental economics have attempted the investigation of the impact of foreign direct investment-growth nexus, but they have missed the essential role played by technological innovation and financial development regarding the environmental costs. The notable economic growth and the consequent speedy process of urbanization in BRICS countries have brought about colossal escalation of energy needs leading to environmental degradation. The present study endeavors to explore the effect of foreign direct investment, technological innovation, and financial development on carbon emissions in BRICS member countries, with data from 1990 to 2017. The results verify a strong cross-sectional dependence within the panel countries. The Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator shows that foreign direct investment, technological innovation, and financial development in the BRICS countries possess a negative and statistically significant long-run association with CO2 emissions, while economic growth, trade openness, urbanization, and energy use are found to contribute statistically significant and positive with carbon emissions. The current study chose to employ the Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test for examining the direction of causality. Findings reveal a bidirectional long-run causality running among financial development, economic growth, trade openness, urbanization, energy use, and CO2 emissions; on the contrary, unidirectional causality is found between foreign direct investment and carbon emissions. Consequently, for the BRICS member countries, the development of industries, financial institutions, and development of technological innovation are required to attract quality foreign direct investment. Moreover, urbanization contributes enormously to environmental degradation and necessitates urgent policy responses in these countries.

Abstract:The present study explores the effect of renewable energy consumption and public-private partnership investment in energy on consumption-based carbon dioxide emissions for India from 1990Q1 and 2015Q4 whilst controlling technology innovation and economic growth. The study employs the Maki cointegration, Bayer-Hanck cointegration, fully modified ordinary least squares, dynamic ordinary least squares, and frequency-domain causality tests to explore these dynamics. The outcomes of the present study reveal that (i) there is a long-run cointegration equation between consumption-based carbon dioxide emissions and its possible determinants; (ii) whilst renewable energy consumption is beneficial for lowering consumption-based carbon dioxide emissions, public-private partnership investment in energy makes a positive contribution to consumption-based carbon dioxide emissions in the long-run; and (iii) public-private partnership investment in energy and renewable energy consumption also significantly causes consumption-based carbon dioxide emissions at different frequency levels in India. The present study recommends that policymakers in India should apply a series of policies to discourage the use of non-renewable energy and raise the share of renewable energy in order to reduce consumption-based carbon dioxide emissions in the country. The present study also recommends that public-private partnership investment in renewable energy should increase to achieve cleaner production processes.

Abstract:Purpose Large-scale industrialization, growth and development have come at the cost of severe environmental degradation, primarily measured in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. Apart from the several measures taken to reduce enviornmental degradation, provision of private capital is a necessity apart from the public capital. There is a debate on impact of carbon dioxide emissions with increase in affluence, technology, population and renewable energy. The purpose of the study is to look into the role of private equity investment on renewable energy and technological patents. Design/methodology/approach The study extends the use of stochastic impact by regression on population, affluence and technology model to include another factor for investments and capital, i.e. private equity along with renewable energy, population, technology and GDP growth on carbon emissions for the BRICS countries. The time period for the study is from 2002 to 2021, and the relationship between the variables has been tested using pooled mean group/autoregressive distributed lag, fully modified ordinary least squares and panel quantile regression. Findings First, the results depict a log-run relationship between the variables across the panel using cointegration. Private equity investments do not have a significant impact on carbon emissions. The study proposes important policy implications. There are two schools of thought on the impact of private equity on carbon emissions. For example, inherently private equity investments come with higher stakes and a shorter holding period because of which their primary focus remains on having higher returns instead of responsible investing. However, as private equity adds up to capital, which leads to an increase in productivity and eventually higher economic growth, this could affect carbon emissions. This study supports the first thought. Additionally, renewable energy also affects carbon emissions positively. The policymakers should look into the role and intent of the private equity investors in green investments and invest in technologies and patents that can lead to energy consumption. Originality/value The paper is the first of its kind, to the best of the authors' knowledge, to look into the impact of private equity on renewable energy and technological patents.

Abstract:This study examines the causal relationship among technological innovation (TI), environment pollution (EP), energy consumption (EC) and sustainable economic growth (SEG) from selected South Asian economies. In order to identify the causal association between energy growth and nexus of CO2 emissions, this study is employed the premises of the EKC framework. This study has used annual time series data set from world development indicator (WDI), start from 1990 to 2019. The result of a fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS) method describes a significantly worsen the quality environment in the south Asian region. The individual country as Bangladesh shows a positively significant impact on the CO2 emissions and destroying the level of environment regarding non-renewable and renewable energy and technological innovation index. However, negative and positive values of growth (GDP) and square of GDP respectively confirm the EKC hypothesis in this region. This study has identified the causality between GDP growth and carbon emission and found bidirectional causality between economic growth and energy use.

Abstract:This study utilized the Pooled Mean Group estimator to investigate the effect of renewable energy consumption, electricity consumption, economic growth, institutional quality, and globalization on carbon dioxide emission with an updated dataset for 10 economies for the time period from 1985 to 2018. Results of Harris-Tzavalis’s test and Levin–Lin–Chu’s test show that the utilized regressand and regressors are stationary at I(0) and I(I) that conform that the pooled mean group estimator panel ARDL can be utilized. Results of Kao and Pedroni cointegration tests show that cointegration exists amongst the variables. Empirical results of pooled mean group (PMG) revealed that renewable energy consumption helps to diminish the environmental degradation while foreign direct investment, electricity consumption, and economic growth and institutional quality positively affect the degradation of the environment. The findings show that globalization in the long run adversely and significantly influences the environmental degradation; globalization reduces the environmental degradation in the long run while in the short run, globalization positively and significantly influences the environmental degradation. Results of the panel VAR and VECM model indicate electricity consumption and institutional quality, and globalization positively affects environmental degradation. Further policies are recommended based on the findings.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Rapidly evolving innovation and digitalization have captured the focus of policymakers and scholars regarding their potent role in influencing environmental quality. The present research analyzes the impact of these variables on the carbon emissions of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa economies from 1990 to 2021. This research also explores the impact of economic growth, quadratic green innovation, and green energy on carbon emissions. Using several panel diagnostic tests, this research validates heterogeneous slopes, the presence of cross-sectional dependence, and significant cointegration. Due to the mixed integration order, this research uses a cross-sectional augmented autoregressive distributed lag model, and the results show that economic expansion and green innovation are significant drivers of emissions in both the short and long run. However, digitalization, quadratic green innovation, environmental policy stringency, and green energy are significant in improving environmental quality and sustainability. The long-term results are tested by employing a series of parametric and nonparametric regressions. This research recommends further investment in environmental research and development, digital technologies, green innovation, and the strengthening of environmental policies to attain sustainable development.

Abstract:The present study proposed the relationship among private investment in information and communication technology (ICT), carbon emissions (CO2), renewable energy, political risk, and economic growth over the period of 1985–2020 in Morocco. The dynamic ARDL simulations (ARDL) model suggests that private partnership in ICT plays a significant role in abating CO2 emissions, the adaptation of renewable energy is a key contributor in CO2 degradation, while economic growth shows a positive and significant association with CO2 emissions, indicating that economic growth increases CO2 emissions. The study also analyzed political risk in the study region, which indicates that low political risk mitigates CO2 emissions in Morocco. The findings provide significant enlightenment to acknowledge the importance of private partnership in ICT for the purpose to decarbonize CO2 emissions, and adopting the use of renewable energy. The findings also suggest that a stable political system is inventible towards low-carbon development.

Abstract:Continuing economic progress with less environmental damage and achieving a sustainable environment require switching from fossil fuels to green energy. However, alleviating environmental damage of growth has become a major challenge for BRICS where economic progress amidst rising urbanization pollutes the environment. In this context, the fight against climate change and actions towards environmental sustainability are greatly affected by rising economic policy uncertainty. Hence, this study assesses the role of green energy, urbanization, and economic growth in CO2 emissions in the presence of economic policy uncertainty in BRICS (excluding South Africa) from 1997 to 2020. The study used the cross-sectionally augmented auto-regressive distributive lag technique for revealing the short- and long-run effects of the analyzed variables on environmental quality. The empirical evidence suggested that the environmental Kuznets curve exists according to the recent framework of Narayan and Narayan Energy Policy 38:661-666, (2010) because even though economic growth increases CO2 emissions, its long-run effect is less than the short-run effect. Economic policy uncertainty boosts CO2 not only in the short-run but also in the long-run, evidencing that a sustainable environment requires decreasing the levels of policy uncertainty. For BRICS, switching towards green energy is a vital option to decrease environmental deterioration owing to the negative connection between green energy and CO2. The findings indicated that rapid urbanization is among the causes of high CO2. Furthermore, economic policy uncertainty influences both green energy and economic growth levels. Finally, policies are recommended to mitigate environmental deterioration.

Abstract:The present study investigates the effect of public‐private partnership investment in energy and technological innovation on consumption‐based carbon emissions for China from 1990Q1‐2017Q2. This study employs generalized least square (GLS) based unit root test, Maki cointegration test, fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS), dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS), canonical cointegration regression (CCR) and frequency domain causality test. The finding of this study shows that (a) the cointegrating relationship among public‐private partnership investment in energy, technological innovation, renewable energy consumption, exports, imports, and consumption‐based carbon emissions is proved; (b) exports, renewable energy consumption and technological innovation are helpful to lower consumption‐based carbon emissions; (c) both public‐private partnership investment in energy, GDP and imports leads to increased consumption‐based carbon emissions; (d) in the long term, public‐private partnership investment and technological innovation cause consumption‐based carbon emissions in China. This study recommends technological innovation for the cleaner production process and public‐private partnership investment in renewable energy.

Abstract:Global climate change caused by greenhouse gases (GHGs), particularly carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, poses incomparable threats to human life, the environment, and development. The present study empirically investigates the dynamic impacts of economic growth, fossil fuel energy use, renewable energy use, urbanization, tourism, agricultural value-added, and forested area on CO 2 emissions in Brazil. Time series data from 1990 to 2019 were utilized by applying the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach followed by the dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) method. The DOLS estimate findings reveal that economic growth, fossil fuel energy use, urbanization, tourism, and agricultural value-added cause environmental degradation by increasing CO 2 emissions in Brazil while increasing renewable energy use and forested areas help to mitigate the CO 2 emissions in Brazil. The estimated results are robust to alternative estimators such as fully modified least squares (FMOLS) and canonical cointegrating regression (CCR). In addition, the pairwise Granger causality test is utilized to capture the causal linkage between the variables. This article put forward policy recommendations toward sustainable development by establishing strong regulatory policy instruments to mitigation of CO 2 emissions.

Abstract:Embracing energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) is essential for improving environmental quality. This research investigates the asymmetric impacts of EE, RE, and other factors on CO2 emissions in BRICS (i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries from 1990 to 2014. In contrast to previous studies, the present study considers EE as a major cause of CO2 emissions in BRICS countries. By using the new hidden panel cointegration and nonlinear panel autoregressive distributive lag model, this study is the first of its kind that unfolds the asymmetric links among EE, RE, and CO2 emissions. Findings clearly explain that the impact of the selected variables on CO2 emissions is asymmetric, and both EE and RE help to lower CO2 emissions in BRICS countries. In the long run, positive shocks in EE and RE can significantly mitigate CO2 emissions in BRICS economies. In particular, a 1% fluctuation in the positive sum of EE reduces CO2 emissions by 0.783% in the long run. On the other hand, a 1% fluctuation in the positive component of RE reduces CO2 emissions by 0.733%. Moreover, individual country estimates suggest the heterogeneous effects among BRICS countries. Based on the empirical findings, policymakers should consider the asymmetric behavior of the EE, RE, and economic growth while formulating, energy, environment, and growth policies of BRICS countries.

Abstract:The recent geopolitical tensions are delaying government efforts to fight environmental degradation. This paper aims to examine how public–private partnership investment in energy reduces carbon emissions in E7 countries, a group that has witnessed rapid carbon emissions and frequent geopolitical risks. Utilizing the panel data of E7 countries from 1995 to 2019 and the recently developed panel quantile regression method, the paper reveals that while public–private partnership investment in energy serves as a solution for mitigating carbon emissions, geopolitical risk significantly escalates carbon emissions. In addition, geopolitical instability constraints the beneficial impact of public–private partnership investment in energy on carbon emissions reduction targets. The study also validates the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis as well as the favorable roles of renewable energy, urbanization, and international trade in curbing carbon emissions. Based on the findings, the E7 governments are recommended to either ease the level of geopolitical insecurity or improve the strategies that a country responds to the geopolitical tension and manages its public–private partnership investment in energy.

Abstract:In contemporary times, emerging economies are intended to achieve higher economic growth via foreign direct investment and technological innovation. However, due to increased environmental challenges, these economies are adopting green energy as the key source of environmental recovery and net zero emissions. The present study investigates the influence of FDI, technological innovation, green energy, and trade on carbon emissions in BRICS economies during 1990–2022. This study also considers the role of economic expansion in identifying the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). Using several panel diagnostic and cointegration tests, this study validates the slope heterogeneity and the existence of the cointegration between variables. Due to the non-normal data dispersion, this study uses novel moments quantile regression, while bootstrap quantile regression is used for the robustness. The results examined asserted the presence of the EKC hypothesis in the region, where the initial growth enhances emissions while after reaching at a threshold level, the emission level tends to reduce and environmental quality improves. Besides, this study observed that foreign trade and technological innovation are the key drivers of environmental degradation as these indicators significantly enhances pollution emissions. In contrast, foreign investment, energy efficiency, renewable electricity output, and renewable's consumption significantly improve environmental quality by declining carbon emissions. Following the empirical results, the policy recommendations asserted enhanced investment in renewable and energy efficiency sectors while attracting more foreign investment for sustainable development.

Characteristics of sodium benzoate injury of Listeria monocytogenes.

Abstract:Over 99% of viable cells of Listeria monocytogenes were injured after exposure to a solution of 8.5% sodium benzoate (pH 7.0) for 1 h. Injury was evident by the inability of the bacterium to tolerate 6% NaCl in tryptose agar (TA) and the ability to grow on TA with no added salt. The colony-forming ability of the injured cells was restored when they recovered in tryptose broth containing sublethal amounts of metabolic or synthetic inhibitors. Synthesis of mRNA was critical for restoration of salt tolerance. Inhibition of electron transport, protein synthesis, or repair of the cell wall did not suppress recovery of the cells. Changes in the cell membrane which may have occurred did not allow soluble proteins or nucleotides to leak during the course of benzoate injury.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of innovation, economic growth, financial development, trade, foreign direct investment (FDI), electricity consumption, and urbanization on the environmental degradations in Pakistan. This study has employed the dynamic autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL), to investigate the actual change in the independent variables and its impact on the dependent variable through graphs. The findings demonstrate that energy consumption, GDP growth, urbanization, and trade negatively influence the carbon emissions in the short term. On the other hand, the findings indicate that in the long term, only GDP growth and trade had a significantly negative impact on emissions. Urbanization has a positive and considerable impact on the emissions of carbon dioxide in the long run. On the other hand, financial development and foreign direct investment (FDI) help reduce the environmental degradation in the short term and long term. Moreover, innovation positively affects the carbon emissions in both the long and short run. Policy recommendations are given based on the findings of this study.

Abstract:This research investigates the drivers of consumption-based carbon emissions in Brazil by using a dataset covering the period between 1990 and 2018. These dynamics were examined by employing the ARDL bounds, DOLS, and gradual shift causality tests. The ARDL long- and short-run estimation outcomes reveal that: (a) renewable energy use stimulates the sustainability of the environment; (b) economic growth increases environmental degradation; and (c) technological innovation enhances the quality of the environment. In addition, the gradual shift causality test results disclosed that renewable energy consumption, economic growth, technological innovation and public-private partnership investment in energy can predict consumption-based carbon emissions in Brazil. Therefore, Brazilian policymakers should actively encourage the R&D of low-carbon technologies and renewable energy consumption. Domestic consumption levels, on the other hand, should be targeted, specifically those that are more energy-intensive and cause a rise in CO2 emissions due to consumption.

Abstract:The BRICS nations-Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa-have grown significantly in importance over the past few decades, playing a vital role in the development and growth of the global economy. This expansion has not been without cost, either, since these countries' concern over environmental deterioration has risen sharply. Both researchers and decision-makers have focused a lot of attention on the connection between economic growth and ecological sustainability. By using nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) approach, the complex relationships were analyzed between important economic indicators-such as gross domestic product (GDP), ecological innovations (EI), energy consumption (ENC), institutional performance (IP), and trade openness (TOP)-and their effect on carbon emissions and nitrous oxide emissions in the BRICS countries from 1990 to 2021, this study seeks to contribute to this important dialog. Principal component analysis is formed for technological innovations and institutional performance using six (ICT service exports as a percentage of service exports, computer communications as a percentage of commercial service exports, fixed telephone subscriptions per 100 people, internet users as a percentage of the population, number of patent applications, and R&D expenditures as a percentage of GDP) and twelve (government stability, investment profile, socioeconomic conditions, internal conflict, external conflict, military in politics, control of corruption, religious tensions, ethnic tensions, law and order, bureaucracy quality, and democratic accountability) distinct indicators, respectively. The results of nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag estimation show that increase in economic growth would increase carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions. The positive and negative shocks in trade openness have positive and significant impact on carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions in BRICS countries. Furthermore, the positive shock energy consumptions have positive and significant effect on Brazil and India when carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions are used. However, EKC exists in BRICS countries when carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions are used. According to long-term estimation, energy consumption and technological innovations in the BRICS countries show a strong and adverse link with nitrous oxide and a favorable relationship with carbon dioxide emissions. In the long run, environmental indicators are seen to have a major and unfavorable impact in BRICS nations. Finally, it is proposed that BRICS nations can assure environmental sustainability if they support creative activities, enhance their institutions, and support free trade policies.
