Abstract:Diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrroles (DPP) are high-performance organic optoelectronic materials. They have applications in solar cells, fluorescent probes, bioimaging, photodynamic/photothermal therapy, and in many other areas. This article reports a convenient two-step synthesis of various DPP dyes from Pigment Red 254, an inexpensive commercial pigment. The synthesis includes a Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of a bis(4-chlorophenyl)DPP derivative with aryl and hetaryl boronic acids under mild reaction conditions. The new dyes show large Stokes shifts and high fluorescence quantum yields, important features for their potential use in technical and biological applications.

Abstract:Background: Typically, organic dyes show lower excited state lifetimes, a key hindrance in the development of efficient photoredox processes. Due to their distinctive qualities and efficiency, a particular class of organic chromophores has drawn considerable interest from the scientific community. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), is only seen in molecules with a minimal energy gap (usually less than 0.2 eV) between their lowest two excited states, i.e., singlet excited state (S1) and triplet excited state (T1), is a distinctive property of the molecules under study. Isophthalonitriles are a promising family of chromophores for use as organic photocatalysts because of the ease with which their redox potentials may be adjusted and the prolonged singlet excited states resulting from TADF. Methods: A sustainable process for the photosynthesis of polyfunctionalized dihydro-2-oxypyrroles has been developed using the Michael-Mannich cyclocondensation of amines, dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates, and formaldehyde. The development of a green radical synthesis strategy for this family of chemicals is discussed in detail in the current work. This work used a novel halogenated dicyanobenzene-based photosensitizer was used as a photocatalyst. It was dissolved in ethanol, exposed to air at ambient temperature, and triggered by a blue light-emitting diode as a renewable energy source. This project's main goal is to use a novel conveniently accessible, reasonably priced donor-acceptor (D-A) based on halogenated cyanoarene. Findings: When exposed to visible light, the 3DPAFIPN [2,4,6-tris(diphenylamino)-5-fluoroisophthalonitrile] photocatalyst, which is a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), can induce single-electron transfer (SET), providing a simple and green method that is highly effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly. Also, we calculated the turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) for polyfunctionalized dihydro-2-oxypyrroles. Gram-scale cyclization has also been shown to be a practical technique for use in industrial applications.

Abstract:Direct C-H arylation (DA) polymerization, often known as DArP, is an emerging protocol to the synthesis of pi-functional polymers that has garnered a lot of attention due to its virtues of requiring a minimum number of synthetic steps and producing a simpler byproduct. However, the regioselectivity of the C-H bonds is significantly less effective in the DArP-derived polymers, which is one of the reasons why only a small number of these polymers exhibit photovoltaic characteristics that are equal to counterparts generated via Stille coupling. In this work, a low-defect pi-polymer PBDTF-TPD (DA) is facilely obtained via DArP between 4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)-4fluorothiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']-dithiophene (BDTF) and thieno [3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione (TPD) that possesses regioselective pi-C-H bonds toward arylation. As a result, DArP-derived PBDTF-TPD (DA) and Stillederived PBDTF-TPD (St) share the similar opto-electrochemical properties, photovoltaic performance, and morphology, indicating that DArP polymerization leads to defined structures with minimal branching defects. Specifically, this study demonstrates that the (PCE = 8.91%) of a rationally designed monomer for DArP using an ideal approach is equivalent to that of the Stille-derived analogue PBDTF-TPD (St, PCE = 9.57%).
Regio‐ and Chemo‐selective C‐H Arylation of 3‐Bromothiophene: A Synthesis Shortcut to Versatile π‐Conjugated Building Blocks for Optoelectronic Materials

Abstract:Unlike traditional multi‐step synthetic approaches, we developed a single‐step synthesis of versatile π‐conjugated building blocks bearing post‐functionalizable C‐H and C‐Br bonds. Direct C‐H arylation of 3‐bromothiophene with various iodo(hetero)aryls was successfully carried out with good regio‐ and chemo‐selectivity. Under optimized reaction conditions, 20 new compounds were facilely prepared in yields up to 91%. One of the obtained compounds was demonstrated to further extend its conjugation length using a succinct synthetic plan to create two symmetrical oligo(hetero)aryls (MLC01 and MLC02) that were fabricated as effective hole‐transporting materials (HTM) for perovskite solar cells (PSC). PSC devices utilizing MLC01 as hole‐transport layer displayed promising power conversion efficiencies of up to 17.01%.

Abstract:1,4-dihydro-1,2,4,5-tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles are a versatile class of materials with simple synthesis and promising application in organic electronic devices. In this work we present a method of synthesis of new 1,4-dihydro-1,2,4,5-tetraarylpyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole derivatives, with ester and carboxylic acid groups as anchoring groups, by multicomponent reactions using niobium pentachloride as catalyst. The new materials were structurally and optically characterized. Also, it was compared the bonding of different moieties to the titanium dioxide mesoporous film. The preliminary tests as dyes in standard configuration in dye-sensitized solar cells have shown a potential performance in the energy conversion.

Abstract:Controllable direct C-H arylation with high regioselectivity is highly desirable yet remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a facile regioselective direct C-H arylation is developed for efficient construction of a variety of symmetrical dithienophthalimide-based π -conjugated molecules. The resulting methodology is applicable to a wide range of substrates, from electron-rich units to electron-deficient units with large steric end groups. Aryl halides have been confirmed to be able to couple with dithienophthalimide (DTI) via direct C-H arylation, showing high regioselectivity. Varying the functional end groups onto the DTI core has been demonstrated to fine tune the emission colors to cover most of the visible spectra. The results suggest a facile strategy towards highly selective direct C-H arylation, opening the prospects towards efficient construction of π -conjugated molecules for various potential optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:The alkylation of 1,4-diketo-3,6-arylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrroles (ArDPP) is one of the most important steps in the synthesis of soluble materials based on these molecules and the polymers derived from them (that are employed widely in putative organic solar cells). Here we report an improvement in their method of synthesis replacing habitual solvent and base. Compared with more usual conditions, we employed acetonitrile as solvent to give higher or similar yields, with less toxic and hazardous waste, lower reaction time and temperature, and allows recycling of unreacted starting materials. Unlike dimethylformamide and N-methylpyrrolidone, which are the most commonly employed solvents. Our reaction conditions have been tested on three different ArDPPs (Ar = thiophene, phenyl and 4-methoxyphenyl) with a variety of linear and branched alkyl reagents. The results show similar and improved results in comparison with the published reports while reducing the waste and hazard of the reaction, as well as simplifying the purification of the products in many cases. Overall this method has lower environmental impact, is more cost effective and requires neither the use of dry solvent nor inert atmosphere

Abstract:A diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole (DPP) oligomer containing three DPP cores (Ph4Th4(DPP)3) was synthesized via direct arylation of C–H bonds (DACH). Ph4Th4(DPP)3 has good solubility in many organic solvents, and shows a broad absorption band from the visible to near-infrared region as well as a field-effect hole mobility as high as 0.006 cm2 V−1 s−1. Solution-processed bulk heterojunction organic solar cells based on blends of Ph4Th4(DPP)3 as electron donor and fullerene derivative as electron acceptor were fabricated. An optimized power conversion efficiency of 3.76% with a high open-circuit voltage of 0.85 V was achieved after finely tuning the morphology by changing the blend ratio and by adding additives. These results indicate that DACH is an effective way to produce π-conjugated oligomers for organic solar cells.

Abstract:Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) derivatives are an important class of high-performance pigment used in inks, paints, plastics, and organic electronics. Until now, DPP derivatives containing sophisticated aryl units at the DPP core have usually been obtained via Suzuki, Stille, or Negishi cross-coupling reactions, which require organometallic precursors. In this work, a series of DPP-based p-conjugated molecules bearing diverse aryl substituents on the thiophene-or benzene-DPPs were facilely synthesized in moderate to excellent yields through the Pd-catalyzed direct arylation of C-H bonds. The synthetic procedures feature advantages over traditional C-C cross-coupling reactions such as: (1) avoidance of the use of organometallic reagents in the starting materials leading to simpler byproducts and higher atom economy, (2) fewer synthetic steps, (3) higher yields, (4) better compatibility with chemically sensitive functional groups, and (5) simpler catalytic systems free of phosphine ligands. These advantages make the present protocol an ideal and versatile strategy for the synthesis of DPP derivatives, especially for structurally complicated DPPs that may possess chemically sensitive functionalities. The optical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized DPPs (17 compounds) were systematically investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy, steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry (CV).

Abstract:The judicious design of 3D giant organic dye molecules to enable the formation of a porous photoactive layer on the surface of titania is one of the viable tactics to abate the adverse interfacial charge recombination in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) employing outer-sphere redox couples. Here 2,6-bis(octyloxy)-biphenyl substituted dithieno[3,2-b:2,3-d]pyrrole segment is constructed and employed as the -linker of a high molar absorption coefficient organic push-pull dye. With respect to its congener possessing the hexyl substituted dithieno[3,2-b:2,3-d]pyrrole linker, the new dye can self-assemble on the surface of titania to afford a porous organic coating, which effectively slow down the kinetics of charge recombination of titania electrons with both outer-sphere tris(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt(III) ions and photooxidized dye molecules, improving the cell photovoltage. In addition, the diminishments of charge recombination via modulating the microstructure of interfacial functional zone can also overcompensate the disadvantageous impact of reduced light-harvesting and evoke an enhanced photocurrent output, bringing forth an efficiency improvement from 7.5% to 9.3% at the 100 mW cm(-2), simulated AM1.5 conditions.
Engineering Diketopyrrolopyrrole Sensitizers For Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Enhanced Light Harvesting And Intramolecular Charge Transfer

Abstract:Two asymmetric DPP dyes with a D-pi-A structure are reported, where DPP is used as a bridge to connect the triphenylamine donor and cyanoacetic acid acceptor. The compact dyes exhibit high light absorption ability covering the whole visible spectral region. The most efficient cell exhibited a short-circuit current density of 17.72 mA cm(-2), an open-circuit voltage of 725 mV, and a fill factor of 74%, yielding a power conversion efficiency of 9.51% under standard test conditions (irradiation of 1000 W m(-2), air mass 1.5 G), which is the highest value reported for DPP-based DSCs employing an I (-)/I-3-redox couple. Furthermore, the DPP dyes show remarkable stability under long-term irradiation over 1000 h. Considering the facile synthesis and excellent stability, the DPP sensitizer would be a promising option for highly efficient DSCs. The results show that judicious molecular engineering is crucial for constructing highly efficient charge transfer sensitizers in DSCs.
Direct Arylation: A Greener Synthesis of Anthraquinone-Naphthalene diimide-Based Small Chromophores for Applications in Organic Thin Film Transistors

Abstract:In this paper, we report the design and synthesis of three naphthalene diimide- (NDI) and anthraquinone- (AQ) based organic chromophores derived from direct arylation reactions; NDI-AQ, AQ-NDI-AQ and NDI-AQ-NDI. Compared to classic cross-coupling reactions, this method reduced the number of synthetic and purification steps. The chemical structures, photophysical and electrochemical properties of these molecules were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence emission spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The optoelectronic properties of the three dyes enabled the fabrication of organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). The fabricated OTFTs displayed good n-type semiconducting properties, with electron mobilities ( μ e ${{\mu }_{e}}$ ) of 1.5-4.2×10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1 .

Abstract:Direct arylation has gained acceptance as an important method for the synthesis of conjugated polymers, given several advantages over traditional cross coupling techniques. However, direct arylation also introduces drawbacks including homocoupling, crosslinking and branching that can lead to poor solubility and electronic properties. These side reactions need to be addressed for direct arylation polymerization (DArP) to be a broadly applicable method for creating high performance conjugated polymers. The problems of the reaction can be circumvented by utilizing monomers with directing groups to prevent unwanted functionalization, blocking any potentially reactive positions or using bulky carboxylic acids. Catalyst design may prove to be important in gaining more control over the side reactions that affect DArP, and even though the tailoring of catalysts has had a profound impact on cross-coupling reactions it often remains overlooked for DArP. Here, we outline how by utilizing a pre-catalyst bound with a phosphine ligand known to promote DArP, a catalytic species that can perform DArP in a controlled fashion when compared to traditional palladium sources was created. The pre-catalyst allowed for the controlled generation of poly(9,9-dioctyl-2,7-fluorene-alt-2,2'bithiophene) (PFBT) with a high Mn and for the facile processing of the material at room temperature in THF while also allowing for lower catalytic-and-phosphine-loadings.

Visible, Far-Red, and Near-Infrared Active Unsymmetrical Squaraine Dyes Based on Extended Conjugation within the Polymethine Framework for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Alkyl group wrapped visible, far-red, and NIR active unsymmetrical squaraine dyes with π-extension in the polymethine framework-based AM4-AM7 have been designed, synthesized, and utilized as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells. To extend the π-conjugation within the polymethine framework, thiophene moieties have been incorporated between the donor and acceptor moieties. Absorption spectroscopic studies revealed that π-extension with each −CC– unit resulted ∼100 nm of redshift in the charge transfer transition with the λmaximum of 541, 643, 747, and 833 nm for AM4, AM5, AM6, and AM7 dyes, respectively, with the molar extinction coefficient of >105 M–1cm–1. The π-extended conjugation-based AM6 and AM7 dyes showed improved light-harvesting efficiency (LHE), where the AM7 dye showed an LHE of 386 nm at 60%. Electrochemical studies of AM dyes revealed that the HOMO energy level of the sensitizers has been modulated systematically. Further, π-extension within the polymethine framework showed a dramatic effect on V OC, J SC, and device efficiency when move from visible active AM4 to far-red active to NIR active AM7 dyes. The DSSC efficiencies of 7.35, 5.18, 0.08, and 0.053% have been achieved with the I–/I3 – electrolyte (Z-50) for the AM4, AM5, AM6, and AM7 dyes, respectively. Further, AM4 dye has been cosensitized with AM5, AM6, and AM7 dyes, where AM4:AM5 (1:1) composition achieved the maximum efficiency of 8.12% with I–/I3 – electrolyte (Z-50) compared to the other cosensitization compositions.

Novel pyridoquinazolindone-containing triphenylamine dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract:Four novel "A-D-π-A" pyridoquinazolinone-containing triphenylamine dyes were synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSCs), which consist of triphenylamine as the electron donor, thiophene or CC bond as π-bridge, cyanoacrylic acid as the electron acceptor and pyridoquinazolinone as the auxiliary acceptor. Their photophysical, electrochemical properties and photovoltaic performance were investigated. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) was performed for theoretical calculations. The results show that the incorporation of additional pyridoquinazolinone unit enables dyes with larger charge recombination resistance than the dyes with single pyridoquinazolinone unit, which benefits the increase of Voc . Besides, the introduction of thiophene bridge can broaden and red-shift the absorption region, which endows the dyes with better light-harvesting ability and subsequently brings about superior IPCE and Jsc . Therefore, dye with double pyridoquinazolinone units and thiophene bridge exhibits the best photoelectric conversion efficiency 5.19 % ( Jsc = 11.71 mAcm −2 , Voc = 0.67 V, ff = 0.70).

Pd‐Catalysed Direct Arylation of Distyrylbenzene: Strong Dual‐state Fluorescence and Electrochromism

Abstract:Distyrylbenzenes (DSBs) are well‐known for their strong multicolour fluorescence. Fluorescence tuning of DSB via further functionalization/arylation, on the other hand, is uncommon. This paper reports a Pd‐catalysed direct arylation approach for introducing different aryl groups onto fluorobenzene‐containing DSB moiety (7) in high yields (67‐72%). The versatile methodology allows the substitution of neutral, electron‐deficient and electron‐rich aryl groups. The electron‐deficient aryls render mono‐substitution, while the electron‐rich counterparts promote di‐substitution. The compounds (1‐6) show blue, green, and yellow fluorescence in both the solution and solid states; the fluorescence quantum yields reach 100% and the peak maxima span from 425 to 560 nm. The mono‐carbazole DSB(5) exhibit white light emission(WLM) in polar solvents (acetone, DMF, CH3CN, DMSO and NMP) with very high fluorescence quantum yields(φf) of 60‐80%. For WLM, such high efficiency (φf) is somewhat uncommon. Moreover, visible‐to‐NIR reversible electrochromism is demonstrated by the TPA‐integrated DSB(6). The colour of 6 changes from pristine light yellow to orange, and the absorption maxima shifts from 372 to 1500 nm when a positive potential of 1.0 V vs Ag/Ag+ is applied. Moreover, the system shows high colouration efficiency in the NIR region with fast switching speeds for colouration and decolouration as fast as 0.98s and 1.05s.

Abstract:Three dithiafulvene-based metal -free organic sensitizers all using pyridine as the acceptor but with different pi-bridges of phenyl (DTF-Pyl), thienyl (DTF-Py2) and phenyl-thienyl (DTF-Py3) have been designed, synthesized and used as photosensitizers for dye -sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Introducing thienyl unit into the pi-bridge, as well as extension of the it -bridge can dramatically improve their light harvesting ability and suppress the electron recombination, thus uplifting the performance of DSCs. The overall power conversion efficiency of DSC based on DTF-Py3 shows the highest efficiency of 2.61% with a short-circuit photocurrent density of 7.99 mA cm(-2), an open -circuit photovoltage of 630 mV, and a fill factor of 0.52, under standard global AM 1.5 solar light condition. More importantly, the long-term stability of the DTF-Py3 based DSCs under 500 h light-soaking has been demonstrated. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A visible‐light‐induced, external photocatalyst‐free, site‐selective C‐H arylation of 4H‐pyrido[1,2‐a]pyrimidin‐4‐ones and various 2‐aryl heteroarenes has been developed to provide ortho arylated products 41‐ 95% yield at room temperature. A mechanistic study using controlled experiments, UV‐visible study, DFT study, and observation of colored aggregates suggest that in situ generated Ag‐palladacycle complex of 2‐aryl heteroarenes is responsible for absorbing the visible light and generating aryl radicals from aryldiazonium salts. Further, this methodology demonstrates its versatility by transforming various 2‐aryl heteroarenes, including 2‐phenylquinazolin‐4(3H)‐one, 3‐phenylquinoxalin‐2(1H)‐one, 2‐phenylpyridines, pyrazolo[1,5‐a]pyrimidines, 2‐phenylquinolines, 2‐phenylisoquinolines, and 2‐phenylbenzo[d]thiazoles, into their respective regio‐selective C‐H arylated products under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:N-heterocycles are essential building blocks and scaffolds in medicinal chemistry. A Pd-catalyzed, Ru-photoredox-mediated C–H arylation is applied herein, for converting a series of functionality-inclusive (6-phenylpyridin-2-yl)pyrimidines to single arylated derivatives, using phenyldiazonium tetrafluoroborate as aryl source. This green chemistry-compliant transformation is induced by LED light. The drug-like modular substrates are constructed via combination of Biginelli multi-component condensation and Suzuki C–C cross-coupling, in order to strategically install, adjacent to the Ph-ring intended to undergo C–H arylation, a (6-pyridin-2-yl)pyrimidine that plays the role of a chelating directing moiety for the C–H arylation catalyst. The scope has been demonstrated on a series of 26 substrates, comprising diverse Ph-ring substituents and substitution patterns, as well as with 13 different aryl donors. Substrates in which the Ph-ring (arylation acceptor) was replaced by an electron-rich heteroaryl counterpart (2-/3-thiophene or -benzofuran) have also been examined and found to undergo arylation regioselectively. End-product conformations afford interesting motifs for occupying 3D chemical space, as implied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which has allowed the elucidation of six structures of aryl derivatives and one of an unprecedented pyrimidine-pyridine-benzofuran carbopalladated complex, believed to be a C–H activation derivative.
