Abstract:The production of olive oil generates olive mill wastewater (OMW) which essentially derives from the processing, treatment and pressing of olives in mills. Traditional milling processes require a quantity of water varying between 40 and 120 L per quintal of pressed olives, generating a considerable amount of wastewater. It is thus necessary to reduce process water and enhance its use to implement the concept of a circular economy. To this end, our preliminary work was dedicated to water purification by means of suitable and efficient filtration systems. The microfiltered OMW was firstly concentrated through reverse osmosis. Then, an additional concentration step was carried out via vacuum membrane distillation using hydrophobic hollow fiber membranes. The application of the membrane-based processes allowed the recovery of a purified water and the concentration of valuable polyphenols in a smaller volume. The different fractions obtained from the purification have been tested for the determination of the antioxidant power (DPPH assay) and dosage of polyphenols (Folin-Ciocalteu assay) and were characterized using IR spectroscopy. All samples showed relevant antioxidant activity (percentage range: 10-80%) and total phenolic content in the 1.5-15 g GAE/L range. The obtained fractions were tested for their antimicrobial effect on numerous clinical isolates of Gram-positive and Gram-negative species, resistant and multi-resistant to current antibiotic drugs. OMW samples showed widespread activity against the considered (phyto)pathogens (MIC range 8-16 mg/mL) thus supporting the value of this waste material in the (phyto)pharmaceutical field.

Abstract:Countries producing olive oil generate a considerable amount of olive mill wastewater (OMWW), one of the most harmful agro-industrial effluents with a powerful polluting capacity. In fact, owing to its high pollution load, this effluent is extremely toxic to the whole soil-air-water ecosystem as well as to the living organisms inhabiting it (i.e., plants, animals, aquatic organisms, microorganisms, etc.). Currently, OMWW is discarded but since it includes carbohydrates, organic acids and mineral nutrients, as well as elevated contents of phenolics and other natural antioxidants compounds, it could be considered as a potential source of high value-added natural products. Therefore, the valorization of different waste streams including OMWW into fine biochemicals and the recovery of valuable metabolites via biotechnological processes is probably the main challenge faced by the olive oil industry. In light of that, the aim of the present review article is to summarize the state-of-the-art in relation to the exploitation possibilities and the use of OMWW to generate added-value compounds of great significance for the biofuel, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical, food, and agriculture industries. Valorization of this significant waste steam in particular through a biorefinery platform could substantially enhance the environmental sustainability aspects of the whole industry while simultaneously contributing to the improvement of its economic viability.
Olive mill wastewater co-treatment: Effect of (electro)Fenton processes and dilution ratio on moving bed biofilm reactor performance

Abstract:The treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW) represents still an open challenge because of its highly polluting load. One of the most affordable methods for small-medium mills is to send OMW to industrial wastewater treatment plants (IWTP). Accordingly, this work explored a strategy consisting of the biological co-treatment of real OMW and simulated urban wastewater by a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), with and without (electro)Fenton pre-treatment, to simulate OMW treatment through a multi-barrier approach in an IWTP. The effluent of the MBBR without pre-treatment, despite the long period of operation of 18 months, was in compliance with the limit for total phenols (TPHs) of 0.5 mg/L only at a really low OMW's dilution ratio (DR) (1/4000 (v/v)). The Fenton oxidation (FO) and the electro-assisted Fenton (EAF) processes were investigated as pre-treatment of diluted OMW. FO resulted in good performances in terms of TPHs removal (81%) and improved biodegradability (final BOD5/COD ratio = 0.35) but in poor COD removal (24%). EAF was more effective (COD removal = 41%, TPHs removal = 85%, and final BOD5/COD ratio = 0.40) than FO. Therefore, EAF was finally investigated on undiluted OMW (COD removal = 56%, TPHs removal = 84%, and final BOD5/COD ratio = 0.62) and subsequently co-treated with simulated urban wastewater by MBBR, identifying 1/1000 as the optimal DR. The investigated multi-barrier approach is an interesting option for OMW co-treatment in IWTPs to successfully address the challenge of TPHs degradation and drastically reduce the volume of the biological process unit (4 times lower than MBBR treatment alone).

Abstract:A combination of straw filtration and nanofiltration was investigated for the first time as a sustainable approach aimed at valorizing olive mill wastewaters (OMWs) within a circular economy strategy. Ground straw filters with different granulometry (120, 250 and 500 μm) were tested in the first step to clarify the raw wastewater. The 500 μm filter offered the best performance due to a lower exposed surface of the filtering fibers and a shorter filtering time, allowing us to reduce about 70% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the raw wastewater. Three different commercial membranes in a flat-sheet configuration with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) in the range 150–500 Da were tested to fractionate the clarified wastewater according to a dead-end configuration. Among the investigated membranes, a polymeric membrane of 500 Da (NFA-12A) exhibited the highest productivity in selected operating conditions (steady-state values of 11.4 L/m2 h at 20 bar and 24 ± 2 °C). In addition, flux decays for this membrane were lower than the other two tested membranes, indicating a lower propensity to fouling phenomena. Higher rejections towards total polyphenols and total antioxidant activity (TAA) (76.6% and 73.2%, respectively) were also observed for this membrane. Flavanols and hydroxycinnamic acids were retained by more than 99%. The combination of straw filtration and NF with the NFA-12A membrane allowed us to reduce the COD of raw OMWs up to 97.6%. The retentate fraction of this membrane exhibited a TAA of 18.9 ± 0.7 mM Trolox, supporting its propensity for the development of innovative formulations of interest in food and nutraceutical applications.

Abstract:The olive oil industry generates 30 million cubic meters of olive mill wastewaters (OMWWs) annually. OMWWs are a major environmental concern in the Mediterranean region due to their high organic matter content, suspended solids, unpleasant odor, and dark color. The application of primary treatments such as coagulation-flocculation, adsorption, and hybrid systems combining coagulation-flocculation with adsorption has enabled to remove part of the organic matter, color, turbidity, and growth-inhibiting compounds from OMWWs. Among these methods, the hybrid system combining activated carbon and chitosan has proven to be the best removal efficiency. Subsequently, secondary treatment involving the cultivation of Chlorella sp. on OMWWs pretreated with chitosan achieved the highest maximal specific growth rate (0.513 ± 0.022 day− 1 ) and biomass productivity (0.621 ± 0.021 g/L/day). Notably, the fatty acids (FA) profile produced by Chlorella sp. cells grown under these conditions differed, underscoring the potential of OMWWs as a microalgal growth medium. This innovative approach not only addresses environmental issues but also opens new avenues for sustainable bioproducts.

Abstract:The olive mill industry is a relevant sector in the economy of Mediterranean countries, while it involves high consumption of water and the production of effluents with high environmental impact. The efficient treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW) is of high relevance, particularly for these countries. Climate changes are leading to increasing periods of droughts, and water recovery from polluted streams is essential to ensure the sustainability of this scarce resource. A combination of various technologies involving physical, chemical, and biological processes has been developed for OMW treatment. However, the treatments studied have limitations such as the operation costs, difficulty of industrial scale-up, and the fact that the vast majority do not lead to suitable treated water for discharge/reuse. As such, it is urgent to develop a solution capable of efficiently treating this effluent, overcoming the disadvantages of existing processes to convert OMW from a serious environmental problem into a valuable source of water and nutrients. In this review, several studies based on the OMW treatment are critically discussed, from conventional approaches such as the physical (e.g. centrifugation, filtration, and adsorption) and biological (anaerobic digestion and anaerobic co-digestion) processes, to the most recent technologies such as advanced membrane filtration, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and sulfate radical based AOPs (SR-AOPs). Due to the complexity of the effluent, OMW cannot be efficiently treated by a single process, requiring a sequence of technologies before reaching the required characteristics for discharge into water courses or use in crop irrigation. Reviewing the published results in this matter, it seems that the sequence of processes encompassing ozonation, anaerobic digestion, and SR-AOPs could be the ideal combination for this purpose. However, membrane technologies may be necessary in the final stage of treatment so that the effluent meets legal discharge or irrigation limits.

Abstract:Olive oil production generates high amounts of liquid and solid wastes. For a long time, such complex matrices were considered only as an environmental issue, due to their polluting properties. On the other hand, olive mill wastes (OMWs) exert a positive effect on plant growth when applied to soil due to the high content of organic matter and mineral nutrients. Moreover, OMWs also exhibit antimicrobial activity and protective properties against plant pathogens possibly due to the presence of bioactive molecules including phenols and polysaccharides. This review covers the recent advances made in the identification, isolation, and characterization of OMW-derived bioactive molecules able to influence important plant processes such as plant growth and defend against pathogens. Such studies are relevant from different points of view. First, basic research in plant biology may benefit from the isolation and characterization of new biomolecules to be potentially applied in crop growth and protection against diseases. Moreover, the valorization of waste materials is necessary for the development of a circular economy, which is foreseen to drive the future development of a more sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:Olive oil is a core component of the Mediterranean diet known for its nutritional properties and health benefits. Olive industry is moving to novel extraction systems for higher oil yield and quality and for waste reduction, which is a relevant problem in the process due to its toxicity and high disposal costs. Multi-Phase Decanter (DMF) is a modern two-phase system performed without adding water during the process. Using DMF, a wet by-product indicated as p&acirct&eacute and consisting of the fruit pulp and vegetation water (VW) is recovered. The p&acirct&eacute has a high content of potentially bioactive molecules that may be exploited to promote plant resistance against microbial pathogens. In this work, to identify by-products of biological interest, the VW recovered from the p&acirct&eacute by centrifugation was subjected to fractionation by tangential-flow membrane filtration (TFMF), combining microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF). High-resolution NMR spectroscopy indicated the presence of bioactive molecules such as flavonoids, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein with known antimicrobial activity. High-Performance Anion Exchange Chromatography with Pulsed Amperometric Detection (HPAEC-PAD) was performed to detect the presence of pectic oligosaccharides in the fractions, showing the enrichment, in the UF-concentrate fraction, of oligogalacturonides (OGs), well known for the ability to elicit defense responses and protect plants against pathogen infections. Arabidopsis thaliana plants treated with TFMF fractions displayed induction of defense responses and exhibited resistance against microbial pathogens without adverse effects on growth and fitness. This study shows that p&acirct&eacute by-products can potentially be exploited in agriculture as sustainable plant phyto-protectant.

Abstract:Microbial preparation of herbicide is defined as bioherbicide that can control the weed. In this approach, indigenous plant pathogens isolated from weeds are cultured to produce the large numbers of infective propagules which are applied at a rate that will cause high levels of infection leading to suppression of the target weed. During the present investigation, cell free culture filtrate (CFCF) of Alternaria alternata was evaluated for its phytotoxicity against a noxious weed Lantana camara. The results of cut shoot, seed- ling and detached leaf bioassays revealed the presence of a toxic metabolite in the CFCF and a significant reduction in chlorophyll and protein content were also noticed. Phytotoxic moiety was further purified and characterized by using solvent partition, thin layer chromatography (TLC), FTIR and 1 H NMR analysis. The acetone extract induced maximum phytotoxic damage at a concentration of 100 µg/ml and TLC purified fraction also exhibited herbicidal potential. The toxic compound was identified as tenuazonic acid upon comparison with FTIR and 1 H NMR spectra. This is the first evidence that confirmed the herbicidal potential of a biorational, tenu- azonic acid was produced by submerged fermentation of A. alternata.

Abstract:The rising demand for olive oil worldwide led to an increase of oil production, causing an undesired side-effect such as the huge quantity of olive mill wastewater (OMWW) and leaf waste, which represent a serious problem in agriculture. The present work aims to recycle these wastes and use them as fertilizer in nurseries for young olive trees. Hence, three treatments of OMWW were used: i) Photocatalytic treatment (PT) by silicon dioxide nanoparticles; ii) Biological treatment (BT) by olive leaves and iii) a combination of both biological and photocatalytic treatments (CT). The obtained results showed that BT and PT, when used separately, reduced the phenolic content (PC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), compared to raw OMWW. Interestingly, by combining both treatments, the removal rate of PC and COD reached 78% and 66%, respectively. Following the amendment of young olive trees by treated OMWW, plants growth and morphology, photosynthetic machinery and antioxidant capacity were improved compared to those amended with raw OMWW, with the best values observed under CT. In conclusion, CT allowed the bioremediation of two olive by-products that are useful as biofertilizer for olive young plants in a short period of time and at low cost.

Optimization of hybrid treatment of olive mill wastewaters through impregnation onto raw cypress sawdust and electrocoagulation

Abstract:This research investigation proposes a new method for sustainable olive mill wastewater (OMW) treatment and handling. It is based on the combination of its impregnation onto raw cypress sawdust (RCS) followed by electrocoagulation. The retention of OMW compounds onto various RCS doses show an important decrease of its chemical oxygen demand (COD) and its main cation and anion content. The maximum retention efficiencies of COD, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] were about 51.0%, 75.3%, 28.7%, 77.9%, 84.7%, 41.1%, 98.3%, and 90.9%, respectively, for the highest RCS dose (200 g L-1). This organic matter- and nutrient-loaded biomass could be thermochemically converted through pyrolysis into biofuel and biochar for energetic and agronomic purposes, respectively. The treatment by electrocoagulation of the pre-treated OMW using mild steel electrodes could be considered an attractive treatment method since 75.6% of COD removal efficiency was achieved. Besides, this approach permits a significant energy consumption reduction by 46% as compared with the electrocoagulation process alone. It allows also a significant improvement of the treated effluent quality in terms of both organic and mineral contents that could be reused for the irrigation of olive trees in the context of circular economy.
Detoxification of olive mill wastewater using superabsorbent polymers

Abstract:The detoxification of agro-industrial effluents using superabsorbent polymers is a new and innovative process. Olive mill wastewater constitutes a major environmental problem in Mediterranean countries due to the large volumes generated, the seasonality of the industry, and the high content of polyphenols and organic matter. The application of superabsorbent polymers allows olive mill wastewater to be used as a fertilizer, as it is immobilized, increasing the biological activity that decreases its phytotoxicity, thus making its water, organic matter and mineral content usable for plant nutrition. Various parameters that characterise olive mill wastewater were evaluated after absorption in 2 different superabsorbent polymers (SAP1 and SAP2). The organic matter was equally distributed in both phases, while there was a concentration of protein and sodium in solution. The K:Na ratio decreased from 70:1 to 2:1. The polyphenol desorption from the gel into solution was found to follow Fick's law. The mass transfer coefficients were 0.147 min(-1) and 0.0085 min(-1) for SAP1 and SAP2, respectively. Phytotoxicity tests were carried out with SAP2. Olive mill wastewater in SAP2 with polyphenol concentrations up to 200 mg l(-1) revealed no phytotoxicity, and even stimulated Lepidium sativum growth, while olive mill wastewater without superabsorbent polymer revealed growth inhibition for all concentrations tested. Caffeic acid degradation by the immobilised biomass followed zero order kinetics. Degradation constants of 0.087 mg l(-1) min(-1) gSAP2(-1) and 1.156 mg l(-1) min(-1) gSAP2(-1) were found. Fungi that developed in the plant growth medium were identified as Aspergillus sp. and Penicillium sp.

Abstract:In this review, the main properties of olive mill solid waste, the primary by-product of olive oil production, and its feasibility as a feedstock for anaerobic digesters operating at laboratory-, pilot- and industrial-scales are discussed in detail. Nutrient addition and thermal pretreatments were found to have the potential to address the challenges arising from the high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, the low pH, and the high concentration of phenolic compounds. Furthermore, anaerobic co-digestion with different organic feedstocks has been identified as one of the most promising options to solve the aforementioned problems and the seasonality nature of olive waste, while improving the efficiency of anaerobic treatment plants that operate throughout the whole year. The insights generated from this study show co-digestion with wastes from animal farming to be the most environmentally and economically sustainable method for improving anaerobic digestion processes with olive mill solid waste.

Abstract:The olive oil industry generates significant amounts of olive mill waste (OMW), which poses environmental challenges due to its high organic load and phenolic content. This study investigates an eco-friendly approach to managing OMW by recovering valuable phenolic compounds (PCs) and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) through an integrated process. The methodology involves a filter press, followed by a self-cleaning mechanical vapor recompression (SCMVR) process for water and volatile compounds separation, and a subsequent liquid-liquid extraction for PCs. 99 % of the VFAs were recovered as organic acid salts from the SCMVR distillate and characterized using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) of response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the extraction process, considering variables such as solvent type, pH, temperature, and extraction time. The liquid-liquid extraction process yielded a 98 % recovery of PCs with two-stage extraction process, including key phenolic species such as vanillic acid, caffeic acid, oleuropein, coumaric acid and gallic acid, identified by LC-MS/MS. This study highlights the potential for converting olive mill waste into valuable resources, promoting sustainable practices, and supporting a circular economy in the olive oil industry.

Abstract:This work presents the application of Fenton's reagent process combined with anaerobic digestion to treat an olive mill wastewater (OMW). Firstly, OMW was pre-treated by chemical oxidation in a batch reactor with Fenton's reagent, using a fixed H2O2/COD ratio of 0.20, pH = 3.5 and a H2O2/Fe(2+) molar ratio of 15:1. This advanced oxidation treatment allowed reaching reductions of 17.6 and 82.5% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total polyphenols (TP), respectively. Secondly, OMW treatment by anaerobic digestion was performed using previously adapted microorganisms immobilized in Sepiolite. These biological tests were carried out varying the substrate concentration supplied to the reactor and COD conversions from 52 to 74% were obtained. Afterwards, Fenton's reagent followed by anaerobic digestion was applied to OMW treatment. This combined process presented a significant improvement on organic load removal, reaching COD degradations from 64 to 88%. Beyond the pollutant load removal, it was also monitored the yield of methane generated throughout anaerobic experiments. The methane produced ranged from 281 cm(3) to 322 cm(3) of CH4/g COD removed. Additionally, a methane generation kinetic study was performed using the Monod Model. The application of this model allowed observing a kinetic constant increase of the combined process (kFN = 0.036 h(-1)) when compared to the single anaerobic process (kF = 0.017 h(-1)).

Abstract:Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis or "jodbasedow phenomenon" has been reported throughout the world since iodine has been administered to treat endemic goitre. Nowadays, iodinated radiocontrast agents and the antiarrhythmic drug amiodarone are the most common sources of excess iodine load subsequently leading to iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, especially in elderly patients with underlying goitre. The aim of the study was to identify the number of cases of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis among patients with thyrotoxicosis in a large urban hospital. Over an 18-month period thyrotoxicosis has been diagnosed in a total of 39 patients. Eight patients with iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis (5 female, 3 male; mean age 60.6 years) have been identified (20%). In all patients with iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, iodine exposure with a mean iodine dose of 21.5 g was documented 2 to 16 weeks before diagnosis (iodinated radiocontrast agents in 5 patients, amiodarone in 2 patients, kelp tablets in 1 patient). Clinical features were predominantly tachyarrhythmias and heart failure, while 6 of 8 patients had goitre (thyroid volume 31 to 193 ml). Thyroid antibodies were not detected. Diagnosis was confirmed in 5 of 8 patients with increased urinary iodine concentrations (3436 to > 6000 nmol/24 h), and in 3 of 8 patients with a low tracer uptake in thyroid scintigraphy (1 to 4%). Treatment consisted of methimazole in all patients, additional tional beta-blockers and lithium in 4 patients, and prednisone in 5 patients. The mean treatment ment duration was 9.2 months, and patients became euthyroid after a mean treatment duration of 6.4 weeks. One patient (with still elevated free thyroxine levels) died of myocardial infarction 4 weeks after antithyroid drug therapy had been installed. The incidence, mechanisms and features of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis are discussed. Iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis is a common disease, and the recognition and treatment of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, particularly in elderly patients and patients with goitre, are of clinical importance.
Olive mill wastewater treatment using infiltration percolation in column followed by aerobic biological treatment

Abstract:This work aims to treat olive mill wastewater (OMWW) by infiltration percolation in different columns containing filtration sand, granular activated carbon, and lime, and thus followed by biological treatment using the soil microorganisms to the treatment that will give the best results. The optimum removal efficiency was obtained using granular activated carbon column mixed with 15% of lime with percentages removal of 39.33, 60.28, 53.17 and 88.74% for biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), polyphenols and suspended matter respectively. Aerobic treatment 30 days of OMWW obtained from the column of activated carbon mixed with 15% of lime, neutralized and diluted 15 times with distilled water was investigated. The results showed a significant percentage reduction of 79.78, 69.43, and 60.67%, respectively, for BOD5, COD, and polyphenols. The global removal percentages after the two successive treatments were 87.86% for COD, 87.39% for BOD5 and 81.59% for polyphenols compounds. Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy analysis of crude OMWW, infiltrated percolated and biologically treated, showed a difference between the spectra that manifests by the reduction of the spectrum intensity bands after each treatment stage, which confirmed the analytical results. Soil microorganisms have shown their biodegradation efficiency of organic matter and polyphenols of these much-polluted effluents under aerobic conditions. The results indicated that the pretreatment of raw olive mill wastewater could be realized before biological treatment to obtain a satisfactory reduction.

Abstract:To date, treated olive mill wastewater (OMW) remains expensive and challenging due to its acidity and high levels of hazardous compounds, which cause significant environmental concerns. Consequently, it is crucial to develop an eco-cleaner and effective method for treating OMW. Herein, the novel immobilization of Yarrowia lipolytica within a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/polyethylene glycol (PEG)/agar matrix was prepared as a bio-tool to enhance OMW treatment. The immobilized Y. lipolytica was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Our results indicated that the immobilized Y. lipolytica significantly improved removal efficiencies, reducing 88.6% of COD, 98.05% of TKN, 92.64% of turbidity, 75% of lipids, and 32.08% of PO4 −3 after 72 h. Interestingly, the removal efficiency increased upon reusing immobilized cells for three cycles, reaching 93.33%, 100%, and 98.73% for COD, TKN, PO4 −3, and turbidity, respectively, after 72 h, along with valuable biomass production of 7.31 g L−1. Furthermore, correlation analysis and predictive modelling confirmed the effectiveness and recyclability of this process.
