Abstract:Substrate type is an important factor affecting the quality of water deriving from rainfall onto extensively green roofed areas. Here, stabilized sludge was used as the main nutrient component of the substrate combined with biochar and a dual-substrate structure. Five green roof pilot facilities were constructed, and the effect of control measures on effluent quality was analyzed. The results showed that the stabilized sludge dosage was 3%, and the annual average mass concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) were 3.27 mg·L-1 and 1.61 mg·L-1. The use of stabilized sludge as a nutrient component under real rainfall and temperature conditions in Shanghai did not cause significant leaching of TN and NO3--N. In order to further improve the quality of the effluent, biochar was used as an amendment measure. As a result, the concentrations of TN and NO3--N in the effluent were decreased to 2.16 mg·L-1 and 1.38 mg·L-1, respectively. Using an adsorption layer of pumice can alleviate the leaching of total phosphorus (TP) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). For the total nitrogen budget of each pilot facility, the retained TN was about 55% of the original TN after one year of operation. Thus, stabilized sludge could be used as a nutrient substrate to meet the long-term requirements of plants. In the substrate with biochar, the retained TN in the substrate and the NO3--N concentration in the effluent was decreased, which was related to the mineralization of organics during dry periods and the enhancement of denitrification during rainfall periods. Stabilized sludge was not a polluting source of N but was a source of P. Using biochar and a dual-substrate structure can effectively reduce the TN and COD load of the tested green roof facilities.
Contents of organic matter and major nutrients and the ecological effect related to land application of sewage sludge in China

Abstract:Land application is an important way for treatment of municipal sewage sludge both in China and in the world. Therefore, the contents of organic matter and nutrients in sewage sludges and their effect on promotion of plant growth have been highlighted when they are recycled in lands. There have been some systematic summaries for land application of sewage sludges in developed countries while those have not been reviewed in China though there are some specific research related to their contents of organic matter and major nutrients. Related documents about land application of sewage sludges are summarized in the paper, which focuses on the organic matter and nutrients in sewage sludges and their effects on land application. It shows from the statistical analysis of the contents of organic matter and nutrients in China's municipal sewage sludges from 29 wastewater plants that the average contents of organic matter, total N, total P and total K are 385, 27, 14 3 and 7g/kg, respectively, which are 1/3~2/3 higher than their responding contents in pig manure, respectively. It is found that the average contents of organic matter in the sewage sludges have being increased recently in China. Many supported that the sewage sludges can be applied to agriculture, forestry and horticulture because they benefit soil fertility and plant growth. It is also indicated that the contents of heavy metals have being decreased, since the last two decades. which is beneficial for land application of sewage sludges, However, the studies on harmfulness of organic pollutants and pathogens resulting from land application of sewage sludges are still limited and long term effects of their land application are needed to be understood through long term experiments in China.
Effects of Composted Straw, Biochar, and Polyacrylamide Addition on Soil Permeability and Dynamic Leaching Characteristics of Pollutants in Loessial Soil in Urban Greenbelts According to Indoor Simulation Experiments

Abstract:Urban greenbelt soil is currently severely degraded and unable to meet the needs of sponge city construction. Therefore, this study involved adding modified materials, such as decomposed straw, straw biochar, and PAM (polyacrylamide), to greenbelt soil (collected from the Xixian New Area, a pilot city for sponge city construction in China). This study was conducted to explore the effects of adding modified materials on soil physical properties and pollutant adsorption capacity through indoor simulation experiments and dynamic leaching experiments (in the dynamic leaching experiments, the medium thickness was 40 cm, and a water outlet was set every 10 cm to collect the filtrate). In this study, three experimental treatments were set up: (1) soil–sand–decomposed straw + PAM (SSJ), (2) soil–sand–biochar + PAM (SSB), and (3) soil–sand–decomposed straw–biochar + PAM (SSBJ). In the three treatments, the addition amounts of soil, sand, and PAM (0.01 g·mL−1) were constant at 560 kg·m−3, 624 kg·m−3, and 76 L·m−3, respectively. The addition amounts of decomposed straw in the SSJ and SSBJ treatments were 100 kg·m−3 and 50 kg·m−3, respectively. The amounts of added biochar in the SSJ and SSBJ treatments were 32 kg·m−3 and 16 kg·m−3, respectively. The saturated hydraulic conductivity and saturated water content of the different treatments increased by 92.90–107.10% and 19.07–32.17%, respectively, compared with the background values. As the depth increased, the leaching concentrations of N and COD (chemical oxygen demand) at 40 cm in the different treatments increased by 282.66–1374.02% and 435.10–455.84%, respectively, compared with those at 10 cm. However, the leaching concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and P changed little with increasing depth. As the flow load increased, the leaching concentration of the pollutant pattern was not obvious. After the leaching of pollutants stabilized, at 40 cm, the leaching concentrations of N, P, and COD for the SSJ, SSBJ, and SSB treatments were 5.46–56.30 mg·L−1, 0.14–2.06 mg·L−1, and 1034.23–1531.40 mg·L−1, respectively. The retention rates of Cu, Zn, and Cd showed a small trend over time, and the retention rates were all above 86%. Overall, the SSB treatment had a strong ability to intercept N, P, and COD, whereas the SSBJ treatment had a strong ability to intercept Cu, Zn, and Cd. These research results can provide a reference for the improvement of greenbelts in sponge city construction.

Abstract:Green roofs have been increasingly used to improve stormwater management, but poor vegetation performance on roof systems, varying with vegetation type, can degrade discharge quality. Biochar has been suggested as an effective substrate additive for green roofs to improve plant performance and discharge quality. However, research on the effects of biochar and vegetation on discharge quality in the long term is lacking and the underlying mechanisms involved are unclear. We examined the effects of biochar amendment and vegetation on discharge quality on organic-substrate green roofs with pre-grown sedum mats and direct-seeded native plants for three years and investigated the key factors influencing discharge quality. Sedum mats reduced the leaching of nutrients and particulate matter by 6–64% relative to native plants, largely due to the higher initial vegetation cover of the former. Biochar addition to sedum mat green roofs resulted in the best integrated water quality due to enhanced plant cover and sorption effects. Structural equation modeling revealed that nutrient leaching was primarily influenced by rainfall depth, time, vegetation cover, and substrate pH. Although biochar-amended sedum mats showed better discharge quality from organic-substrate green roofs, additional ecosystem services may be provided by native plants, suggesting future research to optimize plant composition and cover and biochar properties for sustainable green roofs.

Abstract:To investigate whether soda residue soil could be used as a green roof substrate, this paper setup six green roof systems with four materials (peat soil, coconut bran, perlite, and soda residue soil) mixed in different volume proportions. The effect of soda residue soil content on Sedum lineare growth and pollutant removal from the stormwater runoff was analyzed and the runoff quality index (RQI) was calculated. Results showed that the relative growth rate of S. lineare height in system B with 10% soda residue soil was about 21.5–53.2% higher than the other systems. The outflow of system B with 10% soda residue soil had the lowest mass concentration of NH4+-N and TN, which were 2.2, 3.2 mg/L, respectively. The average repetitive rainfall retention rate of system A without soda residue soil was the lowest at 82.6%. System B had the highest RQI at about 0.71. It confirmed that soda residue soil can be a material with practical application value, and when the volume ratio of peat soil, coconut bran, perlite, and soda residue soil was 4:3:2:1, the green roof would have the best performance in regulating and purifying the initial rainwater runoff.

Abstract:Abstract Aims: Recently, it has been proposed that obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by an imbalance in autonomic nervous tone. Pupil size has been considered a valid test for studying the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Pupillometry is a simple and non-invasive tool to assess the size and dynamics of the pupil. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by pupillometry, the hypothesis that subjects with OSAS present ANS dysregulation. Methods: The study group included 10 males aged between 40 and 50 years with polysomnographic diagnoses of mild OSAS. The control group included 10 males with similar ages with an apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) of less than 5, after polysomnography. Pupillometry was performed by digital infrared pupillometer (25 frame/s). Recordings were processed to measure the area of the pupil frame by frame. The subjects underwent four subsequent recordings: infrared light at rest mandible position (RP); infrared light at forced habitual occlusion (FHO); yellow-green light at RP; and yellow-green light at FHO. According to literature, linear and non-linear information was extracted from the recordings. Results: As expected, the two groups did not differ statistically in age and body mass index (BMI), while there was a significant difference in the AHI. In the within-group comparison of pupil size, there were significant differences between RP and FHO under infrared conditions in the control group. There was a significant difference in the determinism percentage (Det%) in the RP infrared condition between the control and OSAS groups. Conclusions: The results of the current study confirm ANS dysregulation in OSAS patients and provide a new possible strategy for studying this pathology by using pupillometry through linear and non-linear mathematical models.

Abstract:Growing concerns about urban runoff pollution and water scarcity caused by urbanization have prompted the application of bioretention facilities to manage urban stormwater. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of proposed bioretention facilities regarding road runoff pollutant removal and the variation characteristics of the media physicochemical properties and microbial diversity in dry-cold regions. Two types of bioretention facilities were designed and then constructed in Tianjin Eco-city, China, on the basis of combined soil filter media screened by a laboratory-scale test with a modified bioretention facility (MBF) containing soil moisture conservation ropes. Redundancy analysis was performed to evaluate the relationships between the variation in media physicochemical properties and microbial communities. An increase in media moisture could promote an increase in the relative abundance of several dominant microbial communities. In the MBF, the relatively low nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) (0.75 mg/L) and total nitrogen (TN) (4.71 mg/L) effluent concentrations, as well as better removal efficiencies for TN and NO3-N in challenge tests, were mainly attributed to the greater relative abundance of Proteobacteria (25.2%) that are involved in the microbial nitrogen transformation process. The MBF also had greater media microbial richness (5253 operational taxonomic units) compared to the conventional bioretention facility and in situ saline soils. The results indicate that stormwater runoff treated by both bioretention facilities has potential use for daily greening and road spraying. The proposed design approach for bioretention facilities is applicable to LID practices and sustainable stormwater management in other urban regions.

Abstract:Green roofs can act as a source or sink of physicochemical pollutants (pH, EC, and TSS), organic substances (BOD 5 and COD), nutrients (NH 4 + , NO 3 − , TN, and TP), and metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn, K, Mg, and Ca). This study aims to examine the effects of organic additives, such as dried sewage sludge, sewage sludge biochar, food waste biochar, wood biochar and compost containing sewage sludge, on substrates of extensive green roofs to reduce pollution in rainwater runoff. The addition of alternative organic materials could reduce the pollution concentration of water quality parameters in the runoff. The results showed that the concentration of most chemical constituents decreased in the case of addition of (i) wood biochar, (ii) sewage sludge biochar, (iii) food waste biochar, (iv) dried sewage sludge, and (v) compost containing sewage sludge, as follows, compared to the control green roof module without organic additives. The addition of wood biochar was most effective in reducing the concentration of pollution compared to the control substrate, but some increased the concentration of pollution. However, the concentrations of these chemical constituents found in rainwater runoff are greatly influenced by the types of materials used in green roofs and the amount of rainfall. Our knowledge of the dynamics of crucial processes involving nutrient recycling and pollution retention within biochar in the ecosystem of green roofs remains limited. To advance our understanding of these ecosystems, further research is essential, including comprehensive roof-scale experiments and long-term monitoring.

Abstract:Listeria monocytogenes causes sepsis and meningitis in immunocompromised hosts and a devastating maternal/fetal infection in pregnant women. In recent years a more benign gastroenteritis in normal hosts has been described. Listeria has been increasingly identified as a food-borne pathogen, and large-scale contamination of processed foods with resulting outbreaks has occurred in recent years, possibly as a result of consolidation of the food industry. Experimental listeriosis in mice has proven to be an extraordinarily useful model for analyzing cell-mediated immune host defenses. Contrary to original concepts, we found that neutrophils, not macrophages, are the prime effectors during early infection. CD8+ T cells are then responsible for lysing infected hepatocytes through perforin-related (early primary and secondary infection) or Fas-L/Fas mechanism (late primary). Of interest, non-classical MHC class Ib restricted recognition mechanisms exist early, whereas MHC class Ia mechanisms can be detected throughout infection.

Abstract:Biochar is one of the potential amendment materials in green roofs. The previous studies concentrate on the single layer green roof using biochar-amended substrate. The influence of biochar in green roof amended with dual layer of substrate is rarely studied. This study is aimed to evaluate the rainwater management of dual substrate layer green roof using biochar amended soil. Four biochar-amended soil columns (0, 5, 10, and 15%) were established to investigate the hydraulic processes. Hydraulic properties (hydraulic conductivity and soil water retention curve) of biochar-amended soil were measured by laboratory tests. The hydrological processes of single layer green roofs amended with biochar were evaluated using numerical simulation. The result shows that bare soil has the least surface runoff and 5% BAS the highest water storage. Thus, bare soil and 5% BAS can be preferred as upper and lower layer, respectively. B15BI0 (i.e., 15 cm bare soil combined with 0 cm bichar-amended soil), B0BI15, B12BI3, B10BI5, B7.5BI7.5, B5BI10, and B3BI12 were explored using numerical simulation method. Real rainfall data recorded in the local city was input into the program. The substrate B5BI10 possessed the highest reduction of peak outflow (19.52%), and longer delay (4.2 min) than single layer substrate. The substrate B12BI3 and B3BI12 shows the longest peak delay (i.e., 5 min). B2BI12 also corresponds to the highest rainwater outflow delay (i.e., 24 min). It provided a reasonable design guidance of dual substrate layer green roof using biochar-amended soil in local area.

Abstract:Urban greening produces a large amount of garden waste, and the pyrolysis of garden waste into biochar is an effective waste management technology. Biochar has a large specific surface area and soil remediation ability. However, the knowledge about the co-recycling of sewage sludge and garden waste biochar to improve the growth of Monstera deliciosa needs to be highlighted. Therefore, we conducted a pot experiment by applying Ficus altissima litter-derived biochar (FB) at rates of 0, 1.5, and 3.0% (w/w, CK, FB1.5, and FB3) in soil amended with sewage sludge at 50% (w/w), to improve the soil properties, and further analyzed the effects of FB on growth and heavy metals (HMs) uptake of landscape plant M. deliciosa. Results showed in comparison with control setups, the addition of 3% FB treatment in sewage sludge amended soil improved the soil properties and significantly increased M. deliciosa dry weight (86.75%), root: shoot ratio (73.23%), N (99.44%), P (116.13%), K (124.40%), Pb (78.81%), and Cu (159.01%) accumulation respectively. In summary, FB3 treatment achieved the best effects in promoting plant growth and soil remediation. These findings revealed that sewage sludge and garden waste biochar could be recycled as amendments for poor acid soils under restoration, a sustainable development path for urban waste disposal.

Abstract:Abstract Considering the large amount and high frequency application of concentrated fertilizer nitrogen in the Black Soil Region of Northeast China, the current laboratory/field simulation study aimed to explore the pollution risk of added nitrogen in black soil to groundwater and identify effective measures to prevent and control soil nitrogen leaching with an undisturbed soil column. The results showed that the saturated nitrogen adsorption capacities increased by 1.7%, 7.7% and 18.5% in ploughing, impervious agent (starch grafted polyacrylic acid) addition, and corn straw returning treatments, respectively, relative to the control (no-till). When the collection volume of the leaching solution reached the experimental maximum (4,000 mL), the total amount of nitrogen leaching from the control soil column (i.e., the no-tillage treatment) accounted for more than 50% of the added nitrogen, indicating a great risk of nitrogen pollution in groundwater. Compared with the no-tillage treatment, the amount of nitrogen leaching from the ploughing treatment increased insignificantly, and the amount of nitrogen leaching in the following spring in the corn straw returning treatment increased by 11.2%. The amount of nitrogen leaching decreased by 12.5% in the soil sampled in autumn of the second year. The total amount of nitrogen leaching in the soil with impervious agents decreased by 40.1%. Therefore, the permeability-reducing agent could significantly reduce underground water pollution risk posed by nitrogen leaching.

Abstract:Ecosystem engineering, such as green roof, provides numerous key ecosystem functions dependent on both plants and environmental changes. In the recent years, global nitrogen (N) deposition has become a hot topic with the intensification of anthropogenic disturbance. However, the response of green roof ecosystems to N deposition is still not clear. To explore the effects of N addition on plant ecological strategy and ecosystem functioning (biomass), we conducted a 3-month N addition simulation experiment using 12 common green roof species from different growth forms on an extensive green roof in Tianjin, China. The experiment included three different N addition treatments (0, 3.5, and 10.5 gN m –2 year –1 ). We found that plants with the resource-acquisitive strategy were more suitable to survive in a high N environment, since both aboveground and belowground traits exhibited synergistic effects. Moreover, N addition indirectly decreased plant biomass, indicating that ecosystem functioning was impaired. We highlight that there is a trade-off between the survival of green roof species and keeping the ecosystem functioning well in the future N deposition. Meanwhile, these findings also provide insights into how green roof species respond to global climate change and offer important information for better managing and protecting similar ecosystem engineering in the background of high N deposition.

Abstract:Green roofs are promising tools in sustainable urban planning, offering benefits such as stormwater management, energy savings, aesthetic appeal, and recreational spaces. They play a crucial role in creating sustainable and resilient cities, providing both environmental and economic advantages. Despite these benefits, concerns persist about their impact on water quality, especially for non-potable use, as conflicting results are found in the literature. This study presents a comparative analysis of the quantity and quality of water drained from an extensive green roof against an adjacent conventional rooftop made of fiber–cement tiles in subtropical Brazil. Over a 14-month period, the water drained from both roofs was evaluated based on physical (turbidity, apparent color, true color, electrical conductivity, total solids, total dissolved solids, suspended solids), chemical (pH, phosphate, total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, chlorides, sulfates, and BOD), microbiological (total coliforms and E. coli ), and metal (copper, iron, zinc, lead, and chrome) concentration parameters. The discharge from the green roof was 40% lower than its counterpart measured at the control roof, while the water quality from both roofs was quite similar. However, the green roof acted as source of chlorides, electrical conductivity, color, BOD, total hardness, E. coli , phosphate, sulfate, and turbidity. On the other side, the green roof neutralized the slightly acidic character of rainwater, showcasing its potential to mitigate the effects of acid rain. The study's results underscored that the water discharged from the green roof generally aligned with non-potable standards mandated by both Brazilian and international regulations. However, the findings emphasized the imperative need for pre-treatment of the green roof discharge before its utilization, specifically adjusting parameters like turbidity, BOD, total coliforms, and E. coli , which were identified as crucial to ensure water safety and compliance with non-potable use standards.

Abstract:Safe recycling of the growing amounts of municipal sewage sludge containing toxic metals had been critically challenged with the fast urbanization. In this study, we investigated soil amendment of municipal wastewater treatment (MSS) converted biochar for its recycling in agricultural soils. In a field experiment, unpyrolyzed (USS) and pyrolyzed municipal sewage sludge (PSS) was amended at 20 t ha-1 on dry base to a rice paddy before rice plantation, with a control without amendment. Grain yield and emission of non-CO2 potent greenhouse gases were examined as well as topsoil metal mobility and plant uptake determined throughout a rice-wheat rotation year. Compared to USS treatment, addition of PSS caused a significantly increased grain yield of rice by 35% but no change in grain yield of wheat following the rice season. No distinct difference was observed in grain concentration of major nutrients of N, P, and K between USS and PSS treatments. Compared to USS treatment, PSS treatment reduced CH4 emissions by 91.6% from soil and by 78.5% from ecosystem during rice-growing season. Whereas, PSS treatment led to a reduction of ecosystem N2O emissions by 70.8% relative to USS treatment during wheat-growing season. While both USS and PSS treatments slightly but insignificantly increased soil total content of heavy metals, PSS treatment reduced CaCl2-extractable Cd pool by 33~40% over USS treatment. Grain contents of Cd and Pb and Cd/Zn were markedly reduced under PSS over USS, without exceeding the Chinese state guideline limit. Carbon emission intensity was considerably (by over 20%) reduced for soil and ecosystem but unchanged for wheat soil, under PSS over USS. Thus, soil amendment of pyrolyzed sewage sludge could be a measure for climate smart soil and for safe grain production in rice agriculture. It deserves further study if repeated amendment could exert sustainable impacts on soil health and food security in the paddy.

Abstract:The non-aeration microalgal-bacteria symbiotic system has attracted great attention due to excellent pollutants removal performance and low greenhouse gas emission. This study investigated how nitrogen (N) sources (ammonia, nitrate and urea) impact biofilm formation, pollutants removal and microbial niches in a microalgal-bacterial biofilm. Results showed that functional genus and enzymes contributed to organics biodegradation and carbon fixation, N transformation and assimilation enabled efficient pollutants removal without CO 2 emission. Urea achieved the maximum chemical oxygen demand (89.2%) and linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (95.3%) removal. However, Nitrate significantly influenced microbial community structure and enabled the highest removal of total N (89.7%). Multifarious functional groups enabled the fast adsorption of pollutants, which favored the continuous transformation and fixing of carbon and N. But N source significantly affects the carbon and N dissimilation and fixing pathways. This study offers a promising alternative method that achieving low-carbon-footprint and cost-saving greywater treatment.

Abstract:Sustainable drainage system (SuDS) for stormwater reclamation has the potential to alleviate the water scarcity and environmental pollution issues. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that the capacity of SuDS to treat stormwater can be improved by integrating biochar and compost in the filter media, whereas their performance in scaled-up applications is less reported. This study examines the effectiveness of a pilot-scale SuDS, bioswale followed by bioretention, amended with wood waste biochar (1, 2, and 4 wt. %) and food waste compost (2 and 4 wt. %) to simultaneously remove multiple pollutants including nutrients, heavy metals, and trace organics from the simulated stormwater. Our results confirmed that SuDS modified with both biochar (2 wt. %) and compost (2 wt. %) displayed superior water quality improvement. The system exhibited high removal efficiency (> 70%) for total phosphorus and major metal species including Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn. Total suspended solids concentration was approaching the detection limit in the effluent, thereby confirming its capability to reduce turbidity and particle-associated pollutants from stormwater. Co-application of biochar and compost also moderately immobilized trace organic contaminants such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, diuron, and atrazine at field-relevant concentrations. Moreover, the soil amendments amplified the activities of enzymes including β-D-cellobiosidase and urease, suggesting that the improved soil conditions and health of microbial communities could possibly increase phyto and bioremediation of contaminants accumulated in the filter media. Overall, our pilot-scale demonstration confirmed that the co-application of biochar and compost in SuDS can provide a variety of benefits for soil/plant health and water quality.

Recent Research on Municipal Sludge as Soil Fertilizer in China: a Review

Abstract:Due to the annual increase in wastewater treatment in most Chinese cities, a major environmental issue has arisen: safe treatment, disposal, and recycling of municipal sludge. Municipal sludge has a high content of carbon and essential nutrients for plant growth; hence, it has gained interest among researchers as a soil fertilizer. This study discusses the potential usage of municipal sludge as soil fertilizer (indicators include nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and trace elements) along with its shortcomings and drawbacks (potentially toxic elements (PTEs), organic matter (OM), pathogens, etc.) as well as reviews the latest reports on the role of municipal sludge in land use. The use of municipal sludge as a soil fertilizer is a sustainable management practice and a single application of sludge does not harm the environment. However, repeated use of sludge may result in the accumulation of harmful chemicals and pathogens that can enter the food chain and endanger human health. Therefore, long-term field studies are needed to develop ways to eliminate these adverse effects and make municipal sludge available for agricultural use.

Feasibility of bioleached sewage sludge in land application

Abstract:Based on the analysis of heavy metals, nutrients and sulfate in bioleached sewage sludge, the feasibility of this sludge in land application was approached in this paper. The results showed that after bioleaching, most of the heavy metals in the supernatant of the sludge were removed through solid-liquid separation, and the removal efficiency of Cu, Pb and Zn was 84.1%, 34.8% and 80.0%, respectively. The heavy metals remained in the sludge were mainly existed in stable forms, which made a higher security for land application. The bioleaching loss of the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in sludge was 38.2%, 52.1% and 42.8%, respectively, but the sludge still remained satisfactory fertilizer value. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the sulfate remained in the sludge after bioleaching was mostly combined with calcium, resulting in a negligible environmental impact.
Soil Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Nitrogen Change for Wheat Field Application of Composted Sewage Sludge

Abstract:This study aimed at assessing the character of greenhouse emissions under different rates of composted sewage sludge as a nitrogen fertilization substitute, founding the characteristic of soil nitrogen change and, ultimately, providing a theoretical basis for the rational utilization of composted sewage sludge in calcareous soil. Compost sludge as a nitrogen fertilizer substitute has emission reduction effects on N2O, CH4 and CO2. Compared with that of the single fertilizer application, the GHGI under the 20% sludge replacement treatment was significantly reduced by 20.15%, and the global warming potential was significantly reduced by 11.53%, while the wheat yield was increased by 4.78%. Compost sludge as a nitrogen substitute significantly increased the soil organic carbon at the jointing stage and reached a 100% replacement ratio at the maturity stage. During the jointing and mature stages, the total nitrogen content of the soil increased significantly at the 100% replacement ratio, while the soil nitrate nitrogen content only increased significantly at the 50% and 100% replacement ratio. Our findings highlight the impact of sludge compost on greenhouse gas emissions and soil nitrogen and guide the use of sludge compost in wheat fields.
