Abstract:Bacterial vaginosis occurs in the lower genital tract and is associated with elevated vaginal pH and the presence of abnormal offensive discharge. [ 1 ] Bacterial vaginosis is 1 of the most common infectious diseases and is persistent with a high prevalence in 20% to 50% among women of reproductive age. [ 2 ] Bacterial vaginosis is characterized by the disorder of the vaginal ecosystem, where the amount of Lactobacillus is markedly reduced in the vagina. [ 3 ] Clinically, bacterial vaginosis is frequently caused by the reproduction of anaerobic microorganisms ( Gardnerella vaginalis , Prevotella , Mycoplasma hominis , Mobiluncus , and Clostridia ), which inhibit Lactobacillus levels. [ 4 ] The high incidence of recurrent bacterial vaginosis may result in negative emotional, social, sexual and reproductive health sequelae. [ 5 ] After treatment with an antibiotic agent, many women (20% to 75%) experience recurrent bacterial vaginosis within 3 months. [ 6 ] Patients with bacterial vaginosis recently prescribed antibiotics and a medical history of sexually transmitted infections significantly more frequently presented recurrent bacterial vaginosis, and primary care can evaluate the approach to the diagnosis and treatment of recurrent bacterial vaginosis. [ 7 ] These reports suggest that new agents should be explored to prevent bacterial vaginosis.
