Abstract:In this contribution, we conceptually present a new avenue to construction of molecular functional materials with high performance of circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the condensed phase. A molecule (1) containing luminogenic silole and chiral sugar moieties was synthesized and thoroughly characterized. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence emission are observed, but upon molecular aggregation, both the CD and fluorescence are simultaneously turned on, showing aggregation-induced CD (AICD) and emission (AIE) effects. The AICD effect is supported by the fact that the molecules readily assemble into right-handed helical nanoribbons and superhelical ropes when aggregated. The AIE effect boosts the fluorescence quantum efficiency (phi(F)) by 136 fold (phi(F), similar to 0.6% in the solution versus similar to 81.3% in the solid state), which surmounts the serious limitations of aggregation-caused quenching effect encountered by conventional luminescent materials. Time-resolved fluorescence study and theoretical calculation from first principles conclude that restriction of the low-frequency intramolecular motions is responsible for the AIE effect. The helical assemblies of 1 prefer to emit right-handed circularly polarised light and display large CPL dissymmetry factors (g(em)), whose absolute values are in the range of 0.08-0.32 and are two orders of magnitude higher than those of commonly reported organic materials. We demonstrate for the first time the use of a Teflon-based microfluidic technique for fabrication of the fluorescent pattern. This shows the highest g(em) of -0.32 possibly due to the enhanced assembling order in the confined microchannel environment. The CPL performance was preserved after more than half year storage under ambient conditions, revealing the excellent spectral stability. Computational simulation was performed to interpret how the molecules in the aggregates interact with each other at the molecular level. Our designed molecule represents the desired molecular functional material for generating efficient CPL in the solid state, and the current study shows the best results among the reported organic conjugated molecular systems in terms of emission efficiency, dissymmetry factor, and spectral stability.
Boosting Circularly Polarized Luminescence Performance by a Double π-Helix and Heteroannulation

Abstract:Design challenges in the development of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are focused on balancing the luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) and photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL) by regulating the electric (μ) and magnetic (m) transition dipole moment vectors. Aiming at designing efficient CPL emitters and clarifying the chiroptical variation mechanism, herein, we present a double π-helix based on a cyclooctatetraene-embedded perylene diimide dimer that combines chirality with molecular entanglement and very high barriers for racemization. Through finely regulating the magnitudes of μ and m, the maximal dissymmetry factors |gabs| and |glum| can be boosted to 0.035 and 0.030, respectively, as revealed by circular dichroism (CD) and CPL spectra. The results indicate a 3-fold improvement of g values and a modulated ΦPL from 1a, 4, to 5 by nitrogen heteroannulation at the bay region. The CPL brightness (BCPL) of 5 reaches a recorded value of up to 573.4 M-1 cm-1, among the highest values of chiral small molecules reported so far. This work has provided a comprehensive insight into a new class of chiral materials with high CPL activities, further laying molecular fundamentals for chiral optoelectronics.

Abstract:Abstract To boost intrinsic circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties of chiral emitters, an axially chiral biphenyl unit is inlaid in thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) skeleton, urging the participation of chiral source in frontier molecular orbital distributions. A pair of enantiomers, (R)‐BPPOACZ and (S)‐BPPOACZ, containing the cyano as electron‐withdrawing moieties and carbazole and phenoxazine as electron‐donating units are synthesized and separated. The circularly polarized TADF enantiomers exhibit both high photoluminescence quantum yield of 86.10% and excellent CPL activities with maximum dissymmetry factor |gPL| values of almost 10−2 in solution and 1.8 × 10−2 in doped film, which are among the best values of previously reported small chiral organic materials. Moreover, the circularly polarized organic light‐emitting diodes based on the TADF enantiomers achieve the maximum external quantum efficiency of 16.6% with extremely low efficiency roll‐off. Obvious circularly polarized electroluminescence signals with |gEL| values of 4 × 10−3 are also recorded.
Enhanced Circularly Polarized Luminescence Emission Promoted by Achiral Dichroic Oligomers of F8BT in Cholesteric Liquid Crystal

Abstract:In the exploration of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials, doping cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) with achiral dyes is a common strategy. Conjugated polymers are favored as achiral dyes for their superior luminescent properties. In this study, a series of oligomers (M1-M3) and the conjugated polymer F8BT were synthesized to systematically assess the impact of the length of the conjugated backbone on CPL signals of CLCs doped with conjugated polymers. As the length rose from M1 to M3, CPL intensity concurrently increased (|glum| increased from 0.35 to 0.84), attributable to enhanced dichroism (order parameter, SF increased from 0.20 to 0.56). In contrast, F8BT polymer resulted in diminished CPL intensity (|glum| = 0.64) due to the reduced compatibility. Achieving a balance between dichroism and compatibility is crucial for optimizing CPL in conjugated polymer-doped CLCs. The guiding principle established here may have broad applicability in other CPL assemblies, offering a strategic avenue to engineer high-performance CPL materials with conjugated polymer.

Abstract:Abstract Circularly polarized light exhibits promising applications in future displays and photonic technologies. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from chiral luminophores is an ideal approach to directly generating circularly polarized light, in which the energy loss induced by the circularly polarized filters can be reduced. Among various chiral luminophores, organic micro-/nano-structures have attracted increasing attention owing to the high quantum efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry factor. Herein, the recent progress of CPL from organic micro-/nano-structures is summarized. Firstly, the design principles of CPL-active organic micro-/nano-structures are expounded from the construction of micro-/nano-structure and the introduction of chirality. Based on these design principles, several typical organic micro-/nano-structures with CPL activity are introduced in detail, including self-assembly of small molecules, self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers, and self-assembly on micro-/nanoscale architectures. Subsequently, we discuss the external stimuli that can regulate CPL performance, including solvents, pH value, metal ions, mechanical force, and temperature. We also summarize the applications of CPL-active materials in organic light-emitting diodes, optical information processing, and chemical and biological sensing. Finally, the current challenges and prospects in this emerging field are presented. It is expected that this review will provide a guide for the design of excellent CPL-active materials.

Abstract:The CPL films are prepared based on the flexible co‐assembly of exogenous chiral dopants, achiral liquid crystal polymers, and fluorescent molecules. The controllable CPL arose from the common effects of emissive dye with conformational chirality and selective Bragg reflection of chiral liquid crystal polymers. The presence of repeated nematic phases contributes to adjusting the luminescence dissymmetry factors of films. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials are highly demanded due to their great potential in optoelectronic and chiroptical elements. However, the preparation of CPL films with high luminescence dissymmetry factors (glum) remains a formidable task, which impedes their practical application in film‐based devices. Herein, a facile strategy to prepare solid CPL film with a high glum through exogenous chiral induction and amplification of liquid crystal polymers is proposed. Amplification and reversion of the CPL appear when the films are annealed at the chiral nematic liquid crystalline temperature and the maximal glum up to 0.30 due to the enhancement of selective reflection. Thermal annealing treatment at different liquid crystalline states facilitates the formation of the chiral liquid phase and adjusts the circularly polarized emission. This work not only provides a straightforward and versatile platform to construct organic films capable of exhibiting strong circularly polarized emission but also is helpful in understanding the exact mechanism for the liquid crystal enhancement of CPL performance.

Abstract:Realizing high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g) in circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials remains a big challenge, which necessitates understanding systematically how their molecular structure controls the CPL. Here we investigate representative organic chiral emitters with different transition density distributions and reveal the pivotal role of transition density in CPL. We rationalize that to obtain large g-factors, two conditions should be simultaneously satisfied: (i) the transition density for the S1 (or T1)-to-S0 emission must be delocalized over the entire chromophore; and (ii) the chromophore inter-segment twisting must be restricted and tuned to an optimal value (~50o). Our findings offer molecular-level insights into the CPL of organic emitters, with potential applications in the design of chiroptical materials and systems with strong CPL effects.

Abstract:Herein we report on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission originating from supramolecular chirality of organic microcrystals with a |glum| value up to 0.11. The microcrystals were prepared from highly emissive difluoroboron β-diketonate (BF2dbk) dyes R-1 or S-1 with chiral binaphthol (BINOL) skeletons. R-1 and S-1 exhibit undetectable CPL signals in solution but manifest intense CPL emission in their chiral microcrystals. The chiral superstructures induced by BINOL skeletons were confirmed by XRD analysis. Spectral analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that intermolecular electronic coupling, mediated by the asymmetric stacking in the chiral superstructures, effectively alters excited-state electronic structures and facilitates electron transitions perpendicular to BF2bdk planes. The coupling increases cosθμ,m from 0.05 (monomer) to 0.86 (tetramer) and triggers intense optical activity of BF2bdk. The results demonstrate that optical activity of chromophores within assemblies can be regulated by both orientation and extent of intermolecular electronic couplings.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials hold significant promise in multidisciplinary fields, such as circularly polarized organic light‐emitting diodes, biological probes, data storage, and information encryption. The present work overviews the latest advances in energy transfer strategy for constructing CPL materials, involving small organic molecules, polymers, metal complexes, liquid crystals, as well as new‐emerging chiral luminescent materials. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials hold significant promise in multidisciplinary fields such as circularly polarized organic light‐emitting diodes, biological probes, data storage, and information encryption. However, these cutting‐edge applications also put forward higher requirements for the design of CPL materials, requiring large dissymmetry factor and high emission quality. For this purpose, diverse approaches have been explored to generate and enhance CPL emission. Among them, energy transfer (ET) strategy stands out as it can be readily implemented in a wide range of CPL materials. The present work overviews latest advances in energy transfer for generating and modulating CPL, involving small organic molecules, polymers, metal complexes, liquid crystals, as well as new‐emerging chiral luminescent materials. It is anticipated that the review article will garner increased attention toward energy transfer systems and facilitate the advancement of CPL materials.

Abstract:A novel heterogeneous twisted‐stacking structure is proposed, which endows strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) amplification over traditional homogeneous structures, leading to an exceptionally high figure of merit up to 0.11. Interestingly, their CPL performance can be precisely manipulated since the phase retardation of the anisotropic poly (vinyl alcohol) layer can be controlled by uniaxial stretching. Chiroptical materials with strong and switchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties have gained considerable interest due to their feasible applications in optoelectronic devices, sensing, and information encryption. However, in most cases, their luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum) and figure of merit (FOM) values remain very low. Herein, a novel heterogeneous twisted‐stacking structure is proposed, which endows with strong CPL amplification (a maximum of ≈15‐fold enhancement) over traditional homogeneous structures and a high FOM value up to 0.11. Interestingly, their CPL performance (including the sign, magnitude, and spectral position) and the FOM values can be precisely manipulated or even inversed by simply uniaxial stretching, since the phase retardation of the anisotropic poly (vinyl alcohol) layer can be controlled. Moreover, by combining with the viologen gel electrochromic system, the in situ voltage‐driven switching and patterning of the CPL signal can be successfully achieved, with low operation voltage and good cycling stability. This study provides a creative strategy for fabricating strong and electrical switchable CPL‐active materials, which promise new opportunities in miniaturized smart electrochiroptical devices for future information technology.

Abstract:Enhancing the dissymmetry factor (g(lum)) is crucial for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) applications. Herein, we present an innovative strategy achieving an ultrastrong |g(lum)| of 1.73. This is accomplished through the synergistic effect of coassembly of the CPL-emitting ternary liquid crystal (T-N*-LC, |g(lum)| = 0.47) and the selective reflection (lambda = 590 nm) of the polymer cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) within a composite system. Unlike the mismatched chirality combination (|g(lum)| = 1.42, Delta FL = 57%), the matched combination demonstrates an ultrastrong CPL signal with a |g(lum)| of 1.73 and a low Delta FL of 50% when the CPL direction of the T-N*-LC agrees with the CLC film's chirality. Furthermore, we alter the matching degree of the composite system by applying a direct-current (DC) electric field to realize the CPL switch. This study paves the way for developing outstanding CPL-active display materials through synergistic amplification of g(lum).

Abstract:Chiroptical functional materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties have drawn increasing interest for their potential applications in optoelectronics and chiral sensing. However, the development of CPL materials with both large luminescence dissymmetry (g lum) factors and high quantum yields (Φ F) in solid state is still a challenging task. In this work, organic–inorganic hybrid silica films have been prepared by the in-situ polycondensation of a cholesteric liquid-crystalline organosilane with the addition of a chiral dopant and an aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative under an acidic condition. The resulting films emit bright CPL with the absolute g lum values about 0.15, which were mainly caused by the long-range ordered supramolecular helical structure. It is found that the handedness of the CPL was dominated by the selective reflection of the cholesteric liquid crystal films.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted much interest due to its potential applications on chiral photonic techniques and optoelectronic materials science. As known, dissymmetry factor (g(em)) of CPL is one essential factor for evaluating the features of CPL-active materials. Much attention has focused on how to increase the g(em) value, which is one of the most important issues for CPL practical applications. Recently, more and more works have demonstrated that chiral supramolecular could provide the significant strategy to improve the g(em) value through the orderly helical superstructure of chiral building blocks. Normally, this kind of chiral supramolecular assembly process can be accompanied by chirality transfer and induction mechanism, which can promote the amplification effect on the induced CPL of achiral dyes. In this review, we fully summarized recent advances on the induced CPL-active materials of chiral supramolecular co-assemblies, their applications in circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CP-OLEDs) and current challenges.

Abstract:Surface states‐related CD/CPL behaviors of helically assembled carbonized polymer dots are observed and manipulated via interfacial dynamics. The excitation‐dependent CPL activities are closely related to a synergistic‐competition phenomenon between interfacial energy transfer and dipole–dipole interactions. These findings provide unique insights to the interfacial emission properties of host–guest nano‐luminophores. Stimulating and harnessing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is not only a sine qua non for fundamentally unveiling chirogenesis in physical chemistry, but also a pivotal prerequisite for implementation of such phenomenon in research fields including chiral optoelectronics and theranostics. Herein, red‐emissive carbonized polymer dots (CPDs)‐based helical structures were synthesized in this work via biomolecule‐tailored organic–inorganic co‐assembly strategy. The surface states‐related chirality exhibits enhanced circular dichroism (CD) and CPL activities with anisotropic factors as high as gCD,max = 5.4 × 10−3 and glum,max = 1.5 × 10−2, respectively. The obtained CPL signals can be further manipulated in an excitation‐dependent manner, indicating that a synergistic‐competition phenomenon exists between configurational chirality and intermolecular energy‐transfer dynamics, which is further supported by simulations based on density function theory (DFT). Such tunable CPL behavior triggers revolutionary designs and applications of these chiral CPDs into the realm of chirality‐related biological issues and next‐generation chiral optoelectronics.

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are chiral supramolecular systems that self-assemble into a highly regular helical arrangement in a liquid crystal (LC) medium. Such an arrangement is highly beneficial for the chiral enlargement effect on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. Dichroic dyes with rod-like molecular structures can exhibit fluorescence anisotropy along both the long and short molecular axes owing to their transition dipole moment (TDM) vectors. In this work, a pair of donor-accepter (D-A) achiral dichroic dyes is prepared, namely, 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene derivative (P1, whose TDM vector is parallel to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| > F⊥ ) and anthraquinone derivative (N1, whose TDM vector is perpendicular to the long axis of the molecule, i.e., F|| < F⊥ ). CLCs can be fabricated by doping P1 or N1 together with chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl-derived inducers into SLC1717 medium. Dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity is achieved by changing the N1:P1 mass ratio, and the luminescence dissymmetry factor (gem ) value reaches |0.71|. This work describes the first observation of dynamic CPL with tunable handedness and intensity enabled by TDM regulation of achiral dichroic dyes in a CLC medium.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted broad interest due to its potential applications in advanced photonics and electronics. CPL is generally produced from chiral moieties-decorated π-conjugated molecules. Alternatively, CPL can be directly generated from achiral luminescent materials in helical and twisted supramolecular systems, which circumvents the tough and tedious syntheses in the traditional method. In particular, one-dimensional helical supramolecular systems in fibrous morphology are superior for CPL generation over those in spheroidal or planar structures, because of their high dissymmetry factors (glum). Efforts on one side are focused on the development of helical luminescent fibers with high glum, and on the other side, are directed toward the arrangement of nanofibers to produce scalable materials (films or fibers) with chiral activity. This review summarizes the recent advances in CPL generation from supramolecular systems, illustrating how the chirality transfer, amplification, and regulation of CPL are achieved in fibrous morphologies. Their working mechanisms at hierarchical length scales, including helical fibrous supramolecular assemblies at the nanoscale, chiral films constructed by helically-arranged nanofibers at the microscale, and macroscopic fibers via mechanical twisting, are described sequentially. Finally, the current challenges and future opportunities of the chiral system are also presented.

Abstract:Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) materials have received extensive interest due to their unique optical activity. An increasing number of research endeavors were focused on molecular design of excellent CPL materials to meet the requirement of optoelectronic applications in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), chiral sensing, information encryption, etc. CPL-active polymeric materials have demonstrated promising potential rooted in their superiority in scalability, flexibility, 3D-stacking capability and film-forming property. In this review, we survey and outline the development of CPL-active polymers focused on the polymer structure-dependent design strategy, including chiral side chain polymers, chiral main chain polymers, chiral coordination polymers and chiral induction systems involving polymer. We also highlight the recent applications of CPL-active polymers to make a clear statement about realistic significance. It is our hope that the system view of CPL-active polymer almost in the last ten years will offer new insights and inspirations in developing excellent polymers and promote the use of efficient and versatile CPL materials.

Achieving Strong Circularly Polarized Luminescence through Cascade Cationic Insertion in Lead‐free Hybrid Metal Halides

Abstract:Generating circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) with simultaneous high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and dissymmetry factor (glum) is difficult due to usually unmatched electric transition dipole moment (μ) and magnetic transition dipole moment (m) of materials. Herein we tackle this issue by playing a "cascade cationic insertion" trick to achieve strong CPL (with PLQY of ~ 100%) in lead-free metal halides with high glum values reaching -2.3×10-2 without using any chiral inducers. Achiral solvents of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) infiltrate the crystal lattice via asymmetric hydrogen bonding, distorting the perovskite structure to induce the "intrinsic" chirality. Surprisingly, additional insertion of Cs+ cation to substitute partial (CH3)2NH2+ transforms the chiral space group to achiral but the crystal maintains chiroptical activity. Further doping of Sb3+ stimulates strong photoluminescence as a result of self-trapped excitons (STEs) formation without disturbing the crystal framework. The chiral perovskites of indium-antimony chlorides embedded on LEDs chips demonstrate promising potential as CPL emitters. Our work presents rare cases of chiroptical activity of highly luminescent perovskites from only achiral building blocks via spontaneous resolution as a result of symmetry breaking.
