Abstract:Neutrons can be generated in medical linear accelerators (Linac) due to the interaction of high-energy photons (> 10 MeV) with the components of the accelerator head. The generated photoneutrons may penetrate the treatment room if a suitable neutron shield is not used. This causes a biological risk to the patient and occupational workers. The use of appropriate materials in the barriers surrounding the bunker may be effective in preventing the transmission of neutrons from the treatment room to the outside. In addition, neutrons are present in the treatment room due to leakage in the Linac's head. This study aims to reduce the transmission of neutrons from the treatment room by using graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) metamaterial as a neutron shielding material. MCNPX code was used to model three layers of graphene/h-BN metamaterial around the target and other components of the linac, and to investigate its effect on the photon spectrum and photoneutrons. Results indicate that the first layer of a graphene/h-BN metamaterial shield around the target improves photon spectrum quality at low energies, whereas the second and third layers have no significant effect. Regarding neutrons, three layers of the metamaterial results in a 50% reduction in the number of neutrons in the air within the treatment room.
Compact shielding and irradiator design of a 252Cf neutron source

Abstract:New developments are under way to reduce the weight and volume of neutron shielding structures using multi-layered materials. The present study aimed at designing and simulating an appropriate neutron shielding material based on a 252Cf source using MCNPX code. The proposed design is composed of concentric cylinders and sphere layers with a source. The shielding matter consists of paraffin and paraffin +10% graphite as a moderator, beryllium as a reflector and multiplier and boron carbide and lead tungsten as a thermal neutron and gamma absorber, respectively. The results indicate that, compared to previously reported shielding assemblies, the volume and the weight of the proposed design could be significantly reduced by about 97% and 75%, respectively. Thermal and fast neutron fluxes in the irradiation channel were optimized to achieve maximum values for NAA, PGNAA and other applications.

Abstract:In this work, (Nano-Fe 2 O 3 ), Nano Polyaniline (NPANI), and a 50%–50% mixture (NPANI + Nano-Fe 2 O 3 ) samples have been synthesized and implemented towards nuclear radiation attenuation. The synthesized samples have been characterized using Fourier transform- Infrared, X-ray diffraction, and Scanning Electron Microscope. Then, their radiation shielding properties were established using Monte Carlo simulation code and Phy-X/PSD software in the energy range of photon energies of 0.015 MeV–15 MeV. Also, the synthesized samples were investigated experimentally using a hyper-pure germanium detector for 133 Ba, 137 Cs, and 60 Co at selected photon energies of 0.356, 0.661, 1.173, and 1.332 MeV. The linear attenuation coefficient, mean free path , half-value layer, tenth-value layer, and effective atomic number were calculated to determine the radiation shielding characteristics of the synthesized nanocomposite sample. The linear attenuation coefficient (μ) values varied from 83.332 cm −1 to 0.057 cm −1 for the Nano-Fe 2 O 3 sample, 1.412 cm −1 to 0.03 cm −1 for the NPANI sample, and 38.945 to 0.043 cm −1 for the NPANI + Nano- Fe 2 O 3 sample. The results showed that the linear attenuation of the Nano-Fe 2 O 3 sample was highest due to the increased concentration of Fe element (69% w.t.). The fast neutron removal cross-sections for the three synthesis samples, NPANI, NPANI + Nano-Fe 2 O 3 , and Nano-Fe 2 O 3 were 0.155 cm −1 , 0.111 cm −1 , and 0.056 cm −1 , respectively. The NPANI sample was higher than other synthetic samples and those of some commercial glass, polymer, and concrete samples.

Double-layer neutron shield design as neutron shielding application

Abstract:The shield design in particle accelerators and other high energy facilities are mainly connected to the high-energy neutrons. The deep penetration of neutrons through massive shield has become a very serious problem. For shielding to be efficient, most of these neutrons should be confined to the shielding volume. If the interior space will become limited, the sufficient thickness of multilayer shield must be used. Concrete and iron are widely used as a multilayer shield material. Two layers shield material was selected to guarantee radiation safety outside of the shield against neutrons generated in the interaction of the different proton energies. One of them was one meter of concrete, the other was iron-contained material (FeB, Fe2B and stainless-steel) to be determined shield thicknesses. FLUKA Monte Carlo code was used for shield design geometry and required neutron dose distributions. The resulting two layered shields are shown better performance than single used concrete, thus the shield design could leave more space in the interior shielded areas.

Abstract:Occupational radiation protection should be applied to the design of treatment rooms for various radiation therapy techniques, including BNCT, where escaping particles from the beam port of the beam shaping assembly (BSA) may reach the walls or penetrate through the entrance door. The focus of the present study is to design an alternative shielding material, other than the conventional material of lead, that can be considered as the material used in the door and be able to effectively absorb the BSA neutrons which have slowed down to the thermal energy range of < 1 eV after passing through the walls and the maze of the room. To this aim, a thermal neutron shield, composed of polymer composite and polyethylene, has been simulated using the Geant4 Monte Carlo code. The neutron flux and dose values were predicted using an artificial neural network (ANN), eliminating the need for time-consuming Monte Carlo simulations in all possible suggestions. Additionally, this technique enables simultaneous optimization of the parameters involved, which is more effective than the traditional sequential and separate optimization process. The results indicated that the optimized shielding material, chosen through ANN calculations that determined the appropriate thickness and weight percent of its compositions, can decrease the dose behind the door to lower than the allowable limit for occupational exposure. The stability of ANN was tested by considering uncertainties with the Gaussian distributions of random numbers to the testing data. The results are promising as they indicate that ANNs could be used as a reliable tool for accurately predicting the dosimetric results, providing a drastically powerful alternative approach to the time-consuming Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract:A number of reports have highlighted discrepancies between the DuPont aca and fibrometer-based methods for quantitating plasma fibrinogen levels. Although many authors have suggested that the presence of fibrin(ogen) degradation products are in some way responsible for the discrepancies, no direct test of this hypothesis has been carried out. In this report, the authors demonstrate that inhibitors of fibrin monomer polymerization have different effects on the aca and fibrometer assays of fibrinogen. Fibrin polymerization inhibitors allow short soluble fibrin polymers to assemble that can scatter light and are therefore detected by the aca method. However, these short polymers do not gel and thus are not detected by the fibrometer. Therefore, the fibrometer method gives lower fibrinogen values than the aca in the presence of fibrin polymerization inhibitors. The authors also assayed plasma from a patient whose fibrinogen did not polymerize normally and therefore was not measurable by the fibrometer assay. The dysfibrinogenemic plasma assayed by the aca method recorded normal fibrinogen levels. In conclusion, the DuPont aca fibrinogen assay is insensitive to alterations of fibrin polymerization whether from inhibitors or a defective fibrinogen molecule.
Design of a filtration system to improve the dose distribution of an accelerator-based neutron capture therapy system

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study is to design and evaluate a neutron filtration system to improve the dose distribution of an accelerator-based neutron capture therapy system. Methods: An LiF-sintered plate composed of 99%-enriched 6 Li was utilized to filter out low-energy neutrons to increase the average neutron energy at the beam exit. A 5-mm thick filter to fit inside a 12-cm diameter circular collimator was manufactured, and experimental measurements were performed to measure the thermal neutron flux and gamma-ray dose rate inside a water phantom. The experimental measurements were compared with the Monte Carlo simulation, particle, and heavy ion transport code system. Following the experimental verification, three filter designs were modeled, and the thermal neutron flux and the biologically weighted dose distribution inside a phantom were simulated. Following the phantom simulation, a dummy patient CT dataset was used to simulate a boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) irradiation of the brain. A mock tumor located at 4, 6, 8 cm along the central axis and 4-cm off-axis was set, and the dose distribution was simulated for a maximum total biologically weighted brain dose of 12.5 Gy with a beam entering from the vertex. Results: All three filters improved the beam penetration of the accelerator-based neutron source. Filter design C was found to be the most suitable filter, increasing the advantage depth from 9.1 to 9.9 cm. Compared with the unfiltered beam, the mean weighted dose in the tumor located at a depth of 8 cm along the beam axis was increased by ∼25%, and 34% for the tumor located at a depth of 8 cm and off-axis by 4 cm. Conclusion: A neutron filtration system for an accelerator-based BNCT system was investigated using Monte Carlo simulation. The proposed filter design significantly improved the dose distribution for the treatment of deep targets in the brain.

Abstract:Neutron shielding has been a worldwide concern for decades and appropriate methods in nuclear reactors and associated facilities for shielding have been developed. Light materials such as paraffin and water cannot be used in neutron radiography due to structural and fire concerns, and a material in the solid form is needed for effective neutron shielding. Therefore, the present study developed a new neutron shielding design for fixed industrial radiography facilities with solid structures based on material combination. Different materials were investigated to find the most appropriate combination design to shield the spontaneous neutron emitted from a Cf-252 source (with an energy in the range from several keV up to 20 MeV). The combination of iron, graphite, boron (or borate materials), and lead in this order, respectively, were found to be the most appropriate shielding structure for an open Cf-252 source used in fixed industrial radiography. As iron is characterized by a high removal cross section, its use in shielding the californium spontaneous neutron source is the key outcome of the present study. These results were confirmed with the Monte Carlo simulation-based particle and heavy ion transport code system.

Abstract:We prepared two types of lead-free shielding materials consist of double and triple layered with different thicknesses and reported the radiation shielding performance of the developed concrete samples. The linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) of microcomposites was calculated theoretically by XCOM-software and compared with experimental results and less than 4 % difference was observed at all discussed energies. We measured the half and tenth value layers (HVL and TVL) of the single, double and triple layered samples and evaluated the radiation shielding efficiency (RSE) at different energies. The experimental data showed that the inclusion of nanoparticles into the composites reduced the TVL. The triple layered sample, composed of a 3 cm IM-2 layer, a 15 cm CON-2 layer, and a 2 cm IM-2 layer, exhibited exceptional radiation shielding performance, with an RSE of 97.5 % at 0.662 MeV, and an RSE of approximately 92 % for energies greater than 1 MeV. Comparing our samples to pure lead, we found that our double and triple layered samples could replace lead in practical applications, with the triple layer exhibiting superior performance at energies greater than 0.662 MeV. The RSE of our triple layered sample was 100 % for energies less than 0.06 MeV and 97.5 % at 0.662 MeV, and the RSE of our double layered sample with a thickness of 18 cm was 93.5 % and 92.3 % for energies of 1.173 and 1.33 MeV, respectively.

Abstract:Neutrons are encountered in many different fields, including condensed matter physics, space exploration, nuclear power, and healthcare. Neutrons interacting with a biological target produce secondary charged particles that are damaging to human health. The most effective way to shield neutrons is to slow them to thermal energies and then capture the thermalized neutrons. These factors lead us to consider potential materials solutions for neutron shields that maximize the protection of humans while minimizing the shield mass, and which adapt well to modern additive manufacturing techniques. Using hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) as a capture medium and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) as a thermalization medium, we aim to design the optimal internal structure of h$^{10}$BN/HDPE composites by minimizing the effective dose, which is a measure of the estimated radiation damage exposure for a human. Through Monte Carlo simulations in Geant4, we find that the optimal structure reduces the effective dose up to a factor of 72x over aluminum (Al) and 4x over HDPE; this is a significant improvement in shielding effectiveness that could dramatically reduce the radiation exposure of occupational workers.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to develop a high-energy neutron shielding material applied in proton therapy environment. Composite shielding material consisting of 10.00 wt% boron carbide particles (B 4 C), 13.64 wt% surface-modified cross-linked polyethylene (PE), and 76.36 wt% tungsten particles were fabricated by hot-pressure sintering method, where the optimal ratio of the composite is determined by the shielding effect under the neutron field generated in typical proton therapy environment. The results of Differential Scanning Calorimetry measurements (DSC) and tensile experiment show that the composite has good thermal and mechanical properties. In addition, the high energy-neutron shielding performance of the developed material was evaluated using cyclotron proton accelerator with 100 MeV proton. The simulation shows a 99.99% decrease in fast neutron injection after 44 cm shielding, and the experiment result show a 99.70% decrease. Finally, the shielding effect of replacing part of the shielding material of the proton therapy hall with the developed material was simulated, and the results showed that the total neutron injection decreased to 0.99‰ and the neutron dose reduced to 1.10‰ before the enhanced shielding. In summary, the developed material is expected to serve as a shielding enhancement material in the proton therapy environment.

Simulating Radiation Shielding Effectiveness Against Three Neutron Sources

Abstract:Laboratories and Universities regularly apply for approval from the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to use neutron generators for experimental research. To comply with the regulations set by the NRC, adequate shielding is necessary to ensure that the radiation dose rates experienced by an operator, and outside the walls of any containment buildings, are below the prescribed levels. Typically, the neutron source needs to be shielded such that the radiation dose rate experienced by any user is less than 0.25 mRem/hr (500mrem/2000-hour work-year). To address this requirement, we investigate the effectiveness of boronated concrete, boronated water, and light water shielding materials and their applicability to three neutron sources. We present our findings on the radiation shielding design and calculations for three neutron sources situated inside shielding layers. Our modeling utilized the Monte Carlo n-Particle transport codes (MCNP6.2) to simulate neutron attenuation of the shielding. The simulation results reveal that a light water shielding can sufficiently reduce the dose rate for an individual located as close as two meters from the source. Therefore, this shield design can effectively decrease the radiation dose below the maximum recommended limit.

Shielding Capability Research on Composite Base Materials in Hybrid Neutron-Gamma Mixed Radiation Fields

Abstract:The 16N monitoring system operates in a mixed neutron-gamma radiation field and is subject to high background radiation, thus triggering instability in the 16N monitoring system measurement data. Due to its property of actual physical process simulation, the Monte Carlo method was adopted to establish the model of the 16N monitoring system and design a structure-functionally integrated shield to realize neutron-gamma mixed radiation shielding. First, the optimal shielding layer with a thickness of 4 cm was determined in this working environment, which had a significant shielding effect on the background radiation and improved the measurement of the characteristic energy spectrum and the shielding effect on neutrons was better than gamma shielding with the increase in the shield thickness. Then, functional fillers such as B, Gd, W, and Pb were added to the matrix to compare the shielding rates of three matrix materials of polyethylene, epoxy resin, and 6061 aluminum alloy at 1 MeV neutron and gamma energy. The shielding performance of epoxy resin as the matrix material was better than that of the aluminum alloy and polyethylene, and the shielding rate of boron-containing epoxy resin was 44.8%. The γ-ray mass attenuation coefficients of lead and tungsten in the three matrix materials were simulated to determine the best material for the gamma shielding performance. Finally, the optimal materials for neutron shielding and gamma shielding were combined, and the shielding performance of single-layer shielding and double-layer shielding in mixed radiation field was compared. The optimal shielding material-boron-containing epoxy resin was determined as the shielding layer of the 16N monitoring system to realize the integration of structure and function, which provides a theoretical basis for the selection of shielding materials in a special working environment.

Abstract:In recent decades, nanomaterials have been extensively investigated for many applications. Composites doped with different metal nanoparticles have been suggested as effective shielding materials to replace conventional lead-based materials. The use of concretes as structural and radiation protective material has been influenced by the addition of nanomaterials. Several elements with high atomic number and density, such as lead, bismuth, and tungsten, have the potential to form nanoparticles that offer significant enhancements in the shielding ability of composites. Their performance for a range of particle concentrations, particle sizes, and photon energies have been investigated. This review is an attempt to gather the data published in the literature about the application of nanomaterials in radiation shielding, including the use of polymer composites and concretes for protection against X-rays and gamma radiation.

Abstract:One of the most challenges in neutron shielding analyses is the selection of materials that protect the components of nuclear power plants and workers against radiation effects, including neutron and gamma fluxes. The purpose of this study is to examine the neutron reduction effect of various single and multi-element materials. To achieve that MCNP neutron transport and an analytical approach have been proposed to model experiments setup with complex geometry. The materials are inserted between neutron source and the water tank to reduce the neutron effect in the model. Firstly, fast neutron removal cross-section of each material has been calculated. Then, the surface flux tally has been performed to calculate neutron flux as a function of distance and energy for thermal and fast neutrons. The neutron fluxes are decreased depending on the distance and absorbing properties of each candidate. Regarding neutron attenuation performance, the materials have different neutron reduction abilities for each neutron range. Both MCNP and analytical results have been compared with experimental data. The obtained data for thermal and fast neutrons can be useful for the design and development of component and fission-fusion reactors.

Abstract:Utilizing a polymer-based radiation shield offers lightweight, low cost, non-toxic compared to lead and solution for eliminating generated secondary neutrons. Incorporating silicon (i.e., one of the most abundant elements) in new applications, such as shielding, would have an impact on the economy and industry. In this study, seven potential shielding materials, composed of silicon, silicon carbide, and boron carbide embedded ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers, are proposed. The shielding performance of these composite materials, including the attenuation coefficients (μ), the mass attenuation coefficients (μm), the half value layer (HVL), the mean free path (MFP), and the radiation protection efficiency (RPE) were examined using photon beams. Measured μm were verified against the calculated values. The averaged agreement was within ±7.4% between the experimental measurements and the theoretical calculation results. The HVL and MFP measured values for the polymer composites were lower than that for the pure EVA polymer, indicating the fillers in the polymers enhanced the shielding performance. The EVA + SiC (30%) and EVA + Si (15%) + B4C (15%) composites required the lowest thickness to stop 50% of the incident photons. The evaluation of experimental results of the RPE revealed that the polymer composites containing SiC (30%), Si (15%) + B4C (15%), or SiC (15%) + B4C (15%) succeeded in blocking 90–91% of X-rays at nearly 80 keV. However, a thicker shield of the proposed composite materials or combined layers with other high-Z materials could be used for higher energies.

Abstract:Polymers have become widely used substrate materials for shielding neutron rays because of their high hydrogen content and easy processing procedures. Rare-earth materials are also being gradually adopted as neutron absorbers because of their considerable thermal neutron absorption cross-sections. This paper utilizes the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation program to compare the shielding effects of various polymers and rare-earth oxides on neutron rays across different energy ranges. The study investigates the superior shielding materials for neutron radiation in each energy range. Subsequently, a series of materials are simulated by combining the preferred shielding materials for neutron rays in each energy range, exploring the influence of material composition and composite structure on the effectiveness of neutron ray shielding. It is revealed that the preferred material for shielding neutron rays changes for different energy ranges. For low-energy neutron rays, rare-earth oxides such as Sm 2 O 3 and Gd 2 O 3 demonstrate the most effective shielding, whereas for high-energy neutron rays, polyethylene (PE) provides the best shielding performance. Materials with different compositions show varying preferred structures when dealing with a 252 Cf neutron source. However, in mitigating the secondary gamma rays generated during the neutron shielding process, stacked-type materials exhibit the most effective shielding performance.
