Abstract:In high-speed electric trains, a pantograph is mounted on the roof of the train to collect power through contact with an overhead catenary wire. The effect of fast harmonic and parametric excitation on a stochastically driven pantograph-catenary system is studied in this paper. A single-degree-of-freedom model of the pantograph-catenary system is adopted, wherein the stiffness of the nonlinear spring has a time-varying component characterized by both low and high frequencies. Using perturbation and harmonic averaging, a Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation governing the stationary response of the pantograph-catenary system is set up. Based on the transition probability density of the stationary response, it is found that even small high-frequency parametric excitation has an appreciable effect on the system response. Among other things, it shifts the resonant frequency and often changes the response characteristics markedly.

Abstract:Electric railway power systems (ERPS) as one of the most critical and high-power end-user loads of utility grids are characterized by outlandish power quality (PQ) problems all over the world. The extension and evolution of different supply topologies for these systems has resulted in significant and various forms of distortions in network voltage and current in all ERPS, the connected power system, and adjacent consumers. During the last years, numerous studies have been offered to investigate various aspects of PQs in a specific supplying topology. Variation in the supply structure of the ERPS and different types of locomotives has propelled the observation of different PQ phenomena. This versatility and development have led to confront considerable types of two-way interactive interfaces as well as reliability and PQ problems in ERPS. In addition, the lack of standards explicitly dedicated to ERPS has added to the ambiguity and complexity of this issue. In this paper, an extensive review of PQ distortions and phenomena in different configurations of ERPS is proposed and a systematic classification is presented. More than 140 scientific papers and publications are studied and categorized which can provide a fast review and a perfect perspective on the status of PQ indexes for researchers and experts.

Abstract:This paper presents the findings of the research aimed at developing computer models to determine the operating conditions in electric power systems (EPSs) feeding DC and AC railway substations. The object of the research is an EPS with a predominant traction load whose high-voltage power lines are connected to transformer and converter substations with 3 kV and 27.5 kV traction networks. The supply network includes 110 kV and 220 kV power lines. The EPS operating parameters are calculated based on the decomposition of the system into alternating and direct current segments. Calculations are performed for the fundamental frequency and high harmonic frequencies. The modeling technique is universal and can be used to determine the operating parameters and power quality indices for any configuration of an EPS and various designs of traction networks. With this technique, one can solve numerous additional problems, such as calculating the processes of ice melting in traction networks and power lines, determining electromagnetic field strengths, and assessing the heating of power line wires and catenary suspensions. The results obtained show that the voltages on the current collectors are within acceptable limits for all AC and DC electric locomotives. The levels of asymmetry on the 110 and 220 kV tires of traction substations (TP) do not exceed the normally permissible values. The values of the asymmetry coefficients for DC TP are tenths of a percent. With an increase in the size of traffic and in post-emergency conditions caused by the disconnection of communication between one of the support substations and the EPS, the asymmetry indicators on the 220 kV buses of AC substations may exceed the permissible limits. Phase-controlled reactive power sources can be used to reduce them. The analysis of the results of the determination of non-sinusoidal modes allows us to formulate the conclusion that the values of harmonic distortion go beyond the normative limits. Passive and active filters of higher harmonics can be used to normalize them. Calculations of thermal modes of traction transformers show that the temperatures of the most heated points do not exceed acceptable values.

Abstract:For the analysis of high-speed train pantograph-catenary current collection quality considering the impact of pantograph average steady-state and unsteady aerodynamic forces,based on the pantograph model with unsteady aerodynamics and the assumption of uniform flow,the unsteady drag and lift forces of pantograph components were obtained by computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method.By loading the pantograph unsteady aerodynamic forces with the pulsation and the mean steady aerodynamic forces,which were the time average of the unsteady aerodynamic forces,to the dynamic model of pantograph-catenary system respectively,the dynamic features of pantograph-catenary system under two kinds of aerodynamic forces were compared.The simulation shows that under the pantograph three mass model,the dynamic responses enduring uniform current with either pantograph steady or unsteady flow dynamic assumption exhibit little divergence.Moreover,the effects of the amplitude and frequency of the pantograph unsteady aerodynamic force incentives were also examined.The resuts indicate that when the amplitude of the incentive is large or the frequency approaches to the natural frequency of the system,the current collection characteristics would be influenced significantly.This study will provide a basic foundation for the further investigations on the current collection quality of pantograph-catenary system under different complicated aerodynamic conditions such as under non-uniform flows,or cross winds.

Abstract:Pantograph and catenary system are comprehensively investigated at high speed. Firstly, different models of the catenary are established to determine the wave characteristics for this catenary. Then,the co-simulation method of fluid-structure coupled analysis for pantograph-catenary system is established. The trains passing through the tunnels and the wind-induced vibration of catenary are analyzed. Secondly, by experimental testing on the pantograph bottom damper and the pantograph head suspension system, the nonlinear characteristic curves and the corresponding mathematical models are obtained in the catenary irregularity research. Meanwhile, for numerical simulation of pantograph-catenary coupled system, the accuracy and efficiency are both satisfied if the string element is used for catenary messenger wire and the beam element is used for contact wire. In electrical content aspect, electrical field distribution and its relationship to vibration gap have been studied. Relationship among traction current, vibration gap, stagger and electromagnetic force has been studied. Finally, pantograph-catenary arc and catenary wave characteristics experiment has been conducted for supporting the theoretical research. It is demonstrated that investigating the wave characteristics of the catenary by using the actual catenary model with multiple spans is reasonable, and it is effective to determine the wave characteristics through the simulation of pantograph and catenary coupled system. Due to the effect of tunnel wall confinement, the aerodynamic drag, lift forces of pantograph and uplift displacements of the contact wire are increased. It is important to effectively control the displacements and stresses of catenary induced by the wind loads. On the other hand, catenary irregularity threshold provides reference for catenary installation and maintenance. For simulation of pantograph-catenary coupled system, the accuracy and efficiency are both satisfied if the string element is used for catenary messenger wire and the beam element is used for contact wire. Electromagnetic force is small in normal situation. But it will enlarge rapidly in short circuit and affects dynamic features of pantograph-catenary obviously. Pantograph- catenary arc has large influence on wear rate of carbon slipper and contact surface temperature rise, lead to current distortion of circuit for affecting the electrical equipment adversely.

Abstract:In the topology of the DC traction substation there is a rectifier component which generally uses a 12 pulse rectifier type and the load is in the form of a trainset with a component in the form of a converter used for variable speed drives (VSD). The operation of the rectifier and the VSD converter load causes harmonics to appear on the AC input side, so anticipation needs to be done. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct an assessment related to DC traction substations to obtain good electrical power quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the electric power quality parameters of DC railway traction using a 12 pulse rectifier and a VSD converter load. This research was conducted by simulating a DC railway traction model with a 12 pulse rectifier and knowing the comparison of the system power quality between the VSD converter load and the resistive load as the basic reference for the traction substation work system of this model. System modeling is done using PSIM software. The results of the simulation are the parameters of the stability of the voltage, current, and system harmonics.

Abstract:In the last decade, with a continued change in world economic conditions and global trade, transportation of goods has continued to increase. The opening of new and existing markets requires that products and packages move through various regions of the world using available logistical equipment and networks at a faster pace. It also requires that damage be kept at a minimum while providing maximum safety to individuals. This can be achieved by properly designing packages to transportation levels that occur in the supply chain. The purpose of this research is to both measure and analyse the vibration physical forces that occur during rail transport. Rail shipments are widely used across the world, and they are an integral part of the intermodal transfer of ISO containers from ships and trucks to rail. The aim of this paper is to provide vibration levels measured for rail shipments on a major railway line in Central Europe that has not been previously published. The vibration levels that were measured in this study were compared with American Society of Testing and Materials, United States Military Standards and United Kingdom Defense Standard standards and International Safe Transit Association procedures in the form of power spectral density spectrums. A composite power spectral density spectrum is provided which can be used to simulate the measured rail vibration levels in Central Europe. Results are also compared with rail travel in other international shipments for North America and Asia. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Abstract:Phenomena of the pantograph arcing have become a challenge for the further development of high-speed electrified railway system. Despite of the large attention that has been paid to the radiated electromagnetic interference, materials ablation as well as the power-quality decline resulted from pantograph arcing, the specific dynamics of pantograph arcing with a high time resolution are still in absence. In this paper, the pantograph arcing phenomena in a laboratory simulation system were experimentally studied by high-speed photography. Synchronized electrical voltage and current waveforms were obtained to acquire a more comprehensive understanding on the underlying physics. The overall dynamics of the pantograph arcing from ignition to extinguishment were recorded. Three stages of the electric-contact process, from approaching arc, mechanical contact to the drawn arc, were well distinguished. A much intensified drawn arc was observed than the approaching arc. Typical lasting time of the drawn arcing is found $\sim 4$ times larger than the approaching arcing for our test setup. Maximum diameter of 3.3 mm was reached at around the current-peak moment. An interesting stable arc voltage of $\sim 23$ V was found during the drawn arcing. Intense material splash above the carbon strip was observed during the arcing process. The transient resistance during a typical arcing period was also analyzed, and a minimum value of $\sim 100~\text{m}\Omega $ was determined.

Abstract:Electric traction vehicles require a power supply with appropriate voltage parameters. In Poland, a direct voltage power supply system has been adopted. This requires the use of traction substations with the conversion of alternating voltage to direct voltage, which generates a number of disturbances related to the quality of electric power. Dynamic changes in the substation load resulting from the movement of traction vehicles are another cause of voltage changes. The article presents an analysis of measurement results carried out simultaneously in systems powering various traction substations and non-traction demand lines. Due to the fact that non-traction demand lines supply both recipients related to the movement of traction vehicles (including railway stations) and other industrial and municipal recipients, the quality of energy is therefore very important.

Abstract:The increasing complexity of low-voltage networks poses a growing challenge for the reliable and fail-safe operation of electricity grids. The reasons for this include an increasingly decentralized energy generation (photovoltaic systems, wind power, etc.) and the emergence of new types of consumers (e-mobility, domestic electricity storage, etc.). At the same time, the low-voltage grid is largely unmonitored and local power failures are sometimes hard to detect. To overcome this, power line communication (PLC) has emerged as a potential solution for reliable monitoring of the low-voltage grid. In addition to establishing a communication infrastructure, PLC also offers the possibility of evaluating the cables themselves, as well as the connection quality between individual cable distributors based on their Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). The roll-out of a large-scale PLC infrastructure therefore not only ensures communication, but also introduces a tool for monitoring the entire network. To evaluate the potential of this data, we installed 38 PLC modems in three different areas of a German city with a population of about 150,000 as part of the F\"uhler-im-Netz project. Over a period of 22 months, an SNR spectrum of each connection between adjacent PLC modems was generated every quarter of an hour. % and the voltage was measured every minute. The availability of this real-world PLC data opens up new possibilities to react to the increasingly complex challenges in future smart grids. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the data generation and describes how the data was collected during normal operation of the electricity grid. In addition, we present common anomalies, effects, and trends that could be observed in the PLC data at daily, weekly, or seasonal levels. Finally, we discuss potential use cases and the remote inspection of a cable section is highlighted as an example.

Abstract:Metrological characterisation of static energy meters under realistic low power quality conditions is a basic requirement for proper grid control and fair energy billing. The paper reports about a new proposed methodology, where the meters are tested under conditions directly recorded at installation sites. The waveforms of voltages and currents are sampled using a portable instrument; they are reproduced in laboratory conditions with a phantom power generator, with a bandwidth covering up to the 40th harmonic. The recording site is a photovoltaic energy production facility, having a a nominal power of 50 kW, at the coupling section to the grid. These waveforms were then reproduced in the laboratory, and tested on different models of single- and three-phase commercial static energy meters; the models chosen represent both energy meters used by energy providers at the point of common-coupling, and also meters typically used for in-line monitoring by end users. The quantity of interest is the reading error of the measured energy, when tested with the conditions reproduced from the on-field measurements, in comparison with a reference meter. All tested energy meter models comply with the present international documentary standards, which require tests under low power quality conditions; nevertheless, there are models that show unacceptable errors (up to 25%) in the measurement of active energy when tested with the on-field recorded waveforms. This suggests that the standardised testing waveforms might, in some cases, be not fully representative of the actual conditions encountered in the field.

Abstract:A wide variety of electromagnetic phenomena occurring on AC power lines has been held responsible for literally billions of dollars per year in lost revenue. Information related to actual probability of occurrence of these power line deviations is presently limited. This paper describes the results of four years of point of utilization power quality monitoring at 112 North American locations. A quantity of 1057 site months of data collected between 1990 and 1994 was used in this assessment. The data indicate that the numbers of events occurring at typical locations may range from almost none, to thousands per month. The analysis results characterize several aspects of power quality related to the occurrence of low RMS events, high RMS events, transient events, and power interruptions (outages).<>

Abstract:Trends in the use of renewable energy sources to power buildings do not bypass objects for which maintaining a power supply is critical. This also applies to railway signal boxes. The aim of the research work was to test the multisource power supply system for a railway signal box with power electronic converter systems and a DC bus, built as part of the research project. The assumption for powering the railway signal box building was to use renewable sources, energy storage devices, and a 3 kV DC traction network as the second required power supply grid. Both power grids were connected by power electronic converters, and the power values of the converters were set based on the calculated power balance values using the values measured at the system nodes and the set constraints. The tests primarily tested the response of the power supply system to changes in load power and power generated by the photovoltaic source, as well as the charge level of the energy storage devices. The correctness of the control algorithm's operation was assessed based on the recorded power values in the power supply system nodes. The tests were carried out for 60 scenarios that covered all normal and emergency operating conditions. During the tests, delays in response to changes in the power supplied to the converters and the values of circular power flow between the power grid connections were recorded. The recorded delays ranged from 2 to about 50 s and the circular power flows did not exceed 1500 W. Based on the results of the tests, it was found necessary to improve the power measurement system in the power supply system nodes and to improve the quality of communication and the transmission time of measurement data transmission time.

Abstract:A major aspect in power line distribution networks is the constant monitoring of the network properties. With the advent of the smart grid concept, distributed monitoring has started complementing the information of the central stations. In this context, power line communications modems deployed throughout the network provide a tool to monitor high frequency components of the signals traveling through a power line network. We propose therefore to use them not only as communication devices but also as network sensors. Besides classical voltage measurements, these sensors can be designed to monitor high frequency impedances, which provide useful information about the power line network, as for instance status of the topology, cable degradation and occurrence of faults. In this article, we provide a technical analysis of different voltage and impedance measurement techniques that can be integrated into power line modems. We assess the accuracy of the techniques under analysis in the presence of network noise and we discuss the statistical characteristics of the measurement noise. We finally compare the performances of the examined techniques when applied to the fault detection problem in distribution networks, in order to establish which technique gives more accurate results.

Abstract:The growing use of renewable energy sources and sustainable technologies has increased the attractiveness of low-voltage DC distribution grids. Despite initial research and standardization work, the definition of power quality (PQ) issues and their related compatibility levels in DC grids and the related measurement techniques remain in their infancy. The lack of available measurement results obtained in real-world situations is a major shortcoming. In this paper, the results of a measurement campaign obtained in a configurable bipolar 350 V/700 V DC microgrid in an urban environment are presented. Voltage and current signals were registered continuously at different positions in the microgrid with a sampling rate of 500 kSa/s while changing the configuration of the microgrid; the resulting data were analyzed afterwards, with a focus on DC voltage and current variation, ripple, and spectral analysis. The measurements were taken with custom-designed metrology-sound measurement equipment. The measurement results provide input to the development of DC PQ analysis tools and the standardization of DC PQ measurement methods. Furthermore, the experience obtained will be beneficial for utility companies and regulatory authorities for reliable planning-level and compatibility-level surveys.

Abstract:In the development process of large-scale railway transportation system, there are various line structures, resulting in drastic fluctuations of traction power supply system, which brings great difficulties to ensure the power supply capacity of traction power supply system. Traditional power flow calculation methods, such as N-R method and PQ decomposition method, can only calculate highly linearized direct power supply system, and are no longer applicable to new power supply systems. Therefore, it is necessary to study a suitable method to analyze the power supply capacity of AT traction power supply system effectively and accurately. In this paper, firstly, the AT traction power supply system model is built, including substation, substation and AT substation. Then, according to the basic parameters and operation characteristics of electric locomotive, the equivalent circuit model of electric locomotive is built to realize the complete restoration of traction power supply system. Then, the power flow of traction power supply system under different working conditions is calculated, and the power supply capacity under single-vehicle light load, single-vehicle heavy load, multi-vehicle light load and multi-vehicle heavy load is explored. Finally, the model is used to verify it again, and a substantial conclusion is obtained.

Abstract:The railpad is a key element in railway infrastructures that plays an essential role in the train-track dynamics. Presence of worn or defective railpads along railway track may lead to large wheel/rail interaction forces, and a high rate of deterioration for track components. Despite the importance of railpad, the track infrastructure managers use no inspection tool for monitoring in-service railpads over time. In this paper, a novel data-driven monitoring tool for long-term performance analysis of in-service railpads is developed based on train-induced vibration data collected by a track-side measurement system. The monitoring tool consists of a method for track resonance frequencies estimation, a temperature-frequency model for describing railpad behavior with respect to ambient temperature, and a generalized likelihood ratio test based on the generalized extreme value distribution for detecting changes in the railpad status over time. To evaluate the performance of the proposed monitoring system, the status of railpads at four different locations along a railway turnout is monitored over a period of 18 months. It is shown that the monitoring system can successfully detect changes in railpad properties over the considered period.

Abstract:In modern electric traction, direct current traction motors have been replaced with asynchronous motors with a short-circuited rotor. The justification is that asynchronous motors are more reliable, cheaper, and have smaller weights and dimensions, so they are more sustainable. In order to start and adjust the speed required in traction, these motors are powered from the contact line using a transformer and a static voltage and frequency converter. As a result, you can use green electricity produced with wind power plants or solar energy converted with photovoltaic panels, increasing sustainability because the consumption of traditional fuels is reduced. This paper presents various simulations emphasizing the negative effects of the distorting regime, with concrete results. The quality of the simulations carried out is increased by using a mathematical model, which uses the variable parameters of the motor dependent on the modulation of the current and the magnetic saturation. In modern 1500 kW electric locomotives, the traction motors are powered by static converters, which means an increase in losses when operating at nominal load on the motors by 38.7 kW and 217.8 kVAR compared to the sinusoidal three-phase power supply. Thus, the research carried out provides qualitatively and quantitatively correct simulations of the non-sinusoidal regime related to the asynchronous traction motor in order to increase the sustainability of this traction system.

Abstract:As the operating speed of electric multiple units (EMUs) in high-speed railways increases, pantograph–catenary (PC) detachment arcing occurs frequently. The resulting vehicular-grounding electromagnetic transients are related to the dynamic characteristics of the arc length. During large detachment, the processes of arc extinction and arc reignition may occur, resulting in more severe train body (TB) over-voltages and adverse effects on some vehicular electronic devices. As an extension of the previous works, this paper aims to establish a suitable PC arc model to examine the TB transient voltages. To begin with, the arc length dynamic characteristics are reasonably analyzed to deduce the relationship between the detachment distance and the arc length via the chain arc model. Then, the dynamic characteristics of the arc length are introduced, and an arc modeling scheme is proposed to elaborate the vehicle-grid electric power model for EMUs encountering various arcing scenarios. Based on this, the transient over-voltages are analyzed, accounting for both the arc extinction and arc reignition, as well as the mutual influences of multiple detachments in a short time. The influential factors, including arc length characteristics, phase angle, excitation inductance, and grounding parameters, are also involved in the performed analyses.

Non-standard power grid frequency statistics in Asia, Australia, and Europe

Abstract:The power-grid frequency reflects the balance between electricity supply and demand. Measuring the frequency and its variations allows monitoring of the power balance in the system and, thus, the grid stability. In addition, gaining insight into the characteristics of frequency variations and defining precise evaluation metrics for these variations enables accurate assessment of the performance of forecasts and synthetic models of the power-grid frequency. Previous work was limited to a few geographical regions and did not quantify the observed effects. In this contribution, we analyze and quantify the statistical and stochastic properties of self-recorded power-grid frequency data from various synchronous areas in Asia, Australia, and Europe at a resolution of one second. Revealing non-standard statistics of both empirical and synthetic frequency data, we effectively constrain the space of possible (stochastic) power-grid frequency models and share a range of analysis tools to benchmark any model or characterize empirical data. Furthermore, we emphasize the need to analyze data from a large range of synchronous areas to obtain generally applicable models.
