Abstract:TiO2 is the most photoactive material because of its superstrong photooxidizing ability, and TiO2 photocatalysis has been widely applied in sustainable water treatment and environmental remediation. However, poor sunlight or visible-light harvesting efficiency and fast recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers severely limit the practical applications of TiO2. To overcome these problems, the present work demonstrates a facile in-situ co-condensation method combined with hydrothermal treatment to prepare a series of graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts, and anatase TiO2 phase and pi-pi-conjugated polycyclic aromatic carbon structure are created simultaneously. As-prepared TiO2/C composites exhibit remarkably high visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of aqueous emerging phenolic pollutants, acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB), and apparent rate constant of the TiO2/C composite with carbon doping level of 10.3% for APAP and MPB removal is 7.6 and 2.8 times higher than that of bare TiO2, and 6.2 and 2.6 times higher than that of Degussa P25 TiO2. Based on the results of photoelectrochemical experiments, indirect chemical probe measurements, and ESR spectroscopy, it is verified that doping TiO2 with graphitized carbon is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity, which renders the improved visible-light harvesting ability, the accelerated separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, and enlarged BET surface areas. Through analyzing the intermediates yielded in the photodegradation process, the pathway of visible-light photocatalytic degradation of APAP and MPB over the TiO2/C composite is proposed. Abstract:Developing new nanophotocatalysts and identifying their roles are highly attractive in environmental protection and energy utilization. Photoelectro-Fenton process is an environmentally friendly technology and has a wide application in the control of environmental pollutants. However, efficient nanophotocatalysts responsive to visible light are still few. In this work, we have successfully synthesized a uniformly dispersed α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes hetero-nanostructure by electrochemical deposition method for the degradation of phenol. Compared with the separate α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanotubes, the composite α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes electrodes were more effective in the photoelectro-Fenton degradation of phenol and a 100% removal efficiency of phenol was obtained after 60min treatment. The composite α-Fe2O3/TiO2 electrodes showed an enhanced absorbance in visible light region and had good stability to photoelectro-Fenton reactions. The role of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in various Fenton-related processes were systematically investigated. The results indicate that α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes are promising material for pollution prevention.
Photocatalyst-coated Carbon Microtube Electrodes: Preparation and Characterization of Their Properties and Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a potential technology for removing pollutants from water. As the recombination of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs can hinder the photocatalytic efficiency in the treatment of wastewater, the surface of the carrier is usually coated with a semiconductor. In this study, carbon microtube electrode prepared from corncob was coated with either titanium oxide (TiO2) or bismuth phosphate (BiPO4) and then used as a photocatalyst (C-TiO2 or C-BiPO4) to investigate the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB). The two photocatalysts, C-TiO2 and C-BiPO4, were characterized by phase determination, microstructure observation, water contact angle measurement, and base site analysis. The influences of reaction time, stability, MB concentration, initial pH, and center dot OH radicals quenching on the degradation of MB were also evaluated. The degradation of MB by C-TiO2 and C-BiPO4 was mainly dominated by center dot OH radical oxidation. The carbon microtube increased both the mass transfer rate and the photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation rate, thereby increasing the photocatalysis of both C-TiO2 and C-BiPO4 as revealed by an increase in the rate of MB degradation. The rate constants obtained for the degradation of MB by C-TiO2 and C-BiPO4 at 20 degrees C were 9.739 x 10(-7) mM min(-1) and 1.111 x 10(-7) mM min(-1) , respectively. The coating of TiO2 and BiPO4 on the surface of the carbon microtube electrode enhanced their photocatalytic performance, and therefore, C-TiO2 and C-BiPO4 could be developed into a novel material to be used in the photodegradation of dye pollutants. Abstract:Combined electrocoagulation (EC) and homogeneous phase TiO2 photo-assisted system were applied to methyl orange (MO) wastewater treatment. Optimum including current density, initial concentration of MO, TiO2 concentration, pH, solution conductivity and electrode distance were investigated. 98% decolorization (initial concentration = 500 mg/L) was achieved in 30 min with a current density of 125 A/m(2), electrode distance of 2.5 cm, electrolyte KCl concentration of 0.5 g/L, initial pH of 6.86, and TiO2 concentration of 100 mg/L. Compared with individual EC and TiO2/UV systems, the combined treatment system of EC-TiO2/UV enhanced the MO decoloration efficiency (80% removal in 20 min). The energy consumption of EC-TiO2/UV process for MO removal was about 214 kWh/(kgdye). In this paper, the EC-UV/TiO2 combined system has been proved to be an efficient technology for MO containing wastewater treatment.
TiO2 Nanoparticles Supported on PMMA Nanofibers for Photocatalytic Degradation of Methyl Orange

Abstract:In this paper, a photocatalyst composed of TiO2 nanoparticles supported on the nanofibers of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was successfully prepared by hydrothermally treating the electrospun PMMA nanofibers containing titanium n-butoxide precursor at 135°C for 8h. As-prepared composite was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction pattern, thermal gravimetric analysis and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area measurements. It is revealed that high content (42%) of tetragonal anatase TiO2 nanoparticles are uniformly loaded on the PMMA nanofibers to constitute the composite (TiO2@PMMA) photocatalyst with BET surface area of 21.4m2g−1. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2@PMMA towards the degradation of methyl orange (MO), a model pollutant, has been investigated. It is observed that 0.1g of the composite could degrade 100mL of MO (10mg/L) completely within 50min under UV illumination, exhibiting a high catalytic activity. Moreover, the composite could be easily separated from the reaction system by filtration, and maintain high photocatalytic activity in five consecutive cycles of the degradation of MO, suggesting its potentials in recycling use. The work provides a new approach for the development of novel supported photocatalysts with high catalytic activity and good reusability.
A H2O2 Oxidation Approach to Ti3C2/TiO2 for Efficient Photocatalytic Removal of Distinct Organic Pollutants in Water.

Abstract:To develop versatile photocatalysts for efficient degradation of distinct organic pollutants in water is a continuous pursuit in environment remediation. Herein, we directly oxidize Ti3C2 MXene with hydrogen peroxide to produce C-doped anatase TiO2 nanowires with aggregates maintaining a layered architecture of the MXene. The Ti3C2 MXene provides a titanium source for TiO2, a carbon source for in situ C-doping, and templates for nanowire aggregates. Under UV light illumination, the optimized Ti3C2/TiO2 exhibits a reaction rate constant 1.5 times that of the benchmark P25 TiO2 nanoparticles, toward photocatalytic degradations of trace phenol in water. The mechanism study suggests that photogenerated holes play key roles on the phenol degradation, either directly oxidizing phenol molecules or in an indirect way through oxidizing first the surface hydroxyl groups. The unreacted Ti3C2 MXene, although with trace amounts, is supposed to facilitate electron transfer, which inhibits charge recombination. The unique nanostructure of layered aggregates of nanowires, abundant surface oxygen vacancies arising from the carbon doping, and probably the Ti3C2/TiO2 heterojunction guarantee the high photocatalytic efficiency toward removals of organic pollutants in water. The photocatalyst also exhibits an activity superior to, or at least comparable to, the benchmark P25 TiO2 toward photodegradations for typical persistent organic pollutants of phenol, dye molecule of rhodamine B, antibiotic of tetracycline, pharmaceutical wastewater of ofloxacin, and pesticide of N,N-dimethylformamide, when evaluated in total organic carbon removal.
Fabrication of Visible-Light-active Fe-2MI Film Electrode for Simultaneous Removal of Cr(VI) and Phenol

Abstract:In this study, a new coordination polymer of Fe-2-methylimidazole (Fe-2MI) was successfully loaded onto F-doped tin oxide (FTO) via a one-pot solvothermal method, using Fe(NO3)(3) and 2MI as raw materials. For X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, it can be deduced that Fe-2MI assembles were evenly dispersed on the surface of FTO, and were partially encapsulated by tiny FeOOH particles. The as-prepared Fe-2MI film electrode was used as photoanode with titanium sheet (Ti) as the cathode. Simultaneous photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) removal of phenol and Cr(VI) can be effortlessly accomplished under noticeable light illumination. Meanwhile, the impact of initial Fe state was also investigated. Fe-2MI prepared with Fe(III) behaved better PEC performance than that with Fe(II). Furthermore, the Fe-2MI photoanodes were optimized by adjusting the initial concentration of Fe(III) and 2MI precursors. Besides, the application conditions were optimized at acidic pHs and 2.5 V bias voltage. Cr(VI) can be completely reduced with 80% removal of phenol after 5 h PEC reaction. After 5 successive cyclic runs, stable photocatalytic performance can still be observed. Therefore, Fe-2MI coordination polymer can be a promising candidate for preparing visible-light-active photoanode in the application of environmental remediation.
Experimental study of photoelectrocatalytic degradation of phenol-containing wastewater on immobilized TiO2

Abstract:Using TiO2/Ni thin film electrode prepared by dip-coating technique as working electrode, the photoelectrocatalytic system with three kinds of electrodes is built. The advantages of combining photocatalysis with electrochemistry, by applying positive potentials (versus SCE) across the photoelectrode, are confirmed. And it is found that pH value of solution, initial phenol concentration, number of film layers and voltage of electrical bias applied have obvious influence on the degradation of phenol. Meanwhile, types of dissolved gas and inorganic ions do not significantly affect on the degradation of phenol.
Improving the Photo Electro Catalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue by Modified TiO2/ITO Photo Anodes

Abstract:TiO2 photoanodes have gained significant attention for the removal of organic pollutants through photoelectrocatalytic processes, with the aim of developing a cost-effective and efficient method for improving the degradation of pollutants in surface water. This study investigated the effects of adding titanium nanooxide (Degussa P25) containing 70% anatase and 30% rutile phases on the properties of nanostructured TiO2 photoanodes prepared on glass substrates (indium tin oxide (ITO)) using sol–gel/dip coating techniques The results obtained from ultraviolet–visible transmittance spectroscopy, electrochemical (EC) impedance spectroscopy, photocurrent, and atomic force microscopy analyses revealed that the addition of Degussa P25 improved the electrical conductivity of the TiO2/ITO anode and reduced the optical bandgap from 3.50 to 3.35 eV, while the size of the titanium oxide particles decreased to about 75 nm. The EC impedance spectra measurement confirms that the addition of titanium nanooxide Degussa P25 improved the electrical conductivity for TiO2/ITO anode. The photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) performance of the TiO2 photoanodes was investigated via the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UVA light irradiation. The AB photoanode (with the addition of Degussa P25) exhibited excellent PEC performance, with 95.9% color removal efficiency and 63% total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency, compared to 92% color removal efficiency and 56% TOC removal efficiency for the A photoanode (without the addition of Degussa P25). The kinetic constants (k) were 134 × 10−4, 110 × 10−4 (min−1) for A and AB anodes, respectively, and the degradation of MB followed first-order kinetics for all anodes. The A and AB anodes were compared as electrodes for the degradation of MB using PEC, photocatalysis (PC), and EC technologies. Subsequently, The A and AB anodes were utilized as electrodes to compare the performance of PEC, PC, and EC technologies for the degradation of MB. The results showed that the AB anode exhibited higher efficiency in all PC technologies, with color removal (%) efficiencies of 95.9% (PEC), 33% (PC), and 21% (EC) compared to 92% (PEC), 28% (PC), and 19% (EC) for the A anode. Additionally, the photooxidation process had a 2.1% effect on the degradation of the initial MB concentration.

Abstract:Photoelectro-catalysis (PEC) and heterogeneous electro-Fenton (HEF) reactions are two frontier research fields for real effluent treatments. In the present work, a synergetic system with integration of both PEC and HEF has been developed for pollutant removal. PEC process with lower external bias results in the efficient separation of photogenerated hole and electrons, which can also modulate the HEF catalytic performance at the counter electrode, and in other cases the active HEF reaction can in turn affect the intrinsic activity of PEC. In this system, three dimensional TiO 2 nanotube arrays coupled with nitrogen doped TiO 2 nanoparticles (3D-TNAs/N-TiO 2 ) was prepared as photoanode for solar light-driven PEC process while NH 2 -MIL-101 loaded on carbon felt (Fe-MOFs@CF) have been used as the cathode for HEF reaction. The performances of the synergetic system showed much higher degradation efficiency, which were evaluated by degrading typical organic containments in water (with the best of∼95 % in 5 min with 2*3 cm 2 electrode area). The reaction rate in the coupling system were ∼7.25 and 1.18 times higher than single PEC or HEF with a wide pH applied range, well recycled and good stability for further application in water purification.

Abstract:To further improve the photocatalytic techniques for water purification and wastewater treatment, we successfully prepared a new type of TiO(2)/Ti mesh photoelectrode, by anodization in ethylene glycol solution. The three-dimensional arrays of nanotubes formed on Ti mesh show a significant improvement in photocatalytic activity, compared to the nanotube arrays formed on foil. This can be demonstrated by about 22 and 38% enhancement in the degradation efficiency per mass and per area, respectively, when TiO(2)/Ti mesh electrode was used to photocatalyze methyl orange (MO). Furthermore, the effects of different parameters on MO photodegradation were investigated, such as different photoelectrode calcination temperature, the initial pH value of MO solution, and the present of hydrogen peroxide. The superior photocatalytic activity could be achieved by the TiO(2)/Ti mesh photoelectrode calcinated at 550 °C, due to the appearance of mixed crystal phases of anatase and rutile. In strong acidic or caustic conditions, such as pH 1 or 13, a high degradation efficiency can be both obtained. The presence of H(2)O(2) in photocatalytic reactions can promote photocatalytic degradation efficiencies. Moreover, the experimental results demonstrated the excellent stability and reliability of the TiO(2)/Ti mesh electrode.

Abstract:Photo-assisted electrochemical advanced oxidation processes constitute an attractive approach for the degradation of recalcitrant pollutants in water. However, some main limitations of this type of technologies are related to the illumination efficiency of the photocatalyst, as well as the fragile nature and high cost of the photo-electrochemical reactor. In this context, this work suggests the development of a photoanode based on a commercially available flexible UV-LED strip light modified with titanium dioxide and a graphite ribbon, as photocatalyst and electrical conductor, respectively. Thus, the UV-LED strip acts both as a non-fragile conductive substrate for the photocatalyst and as a light source inside the reactor. Other advantages of this photoanode are its high flexibility, low cost, and wide commercial availability. The performance of the flexible photoanode for the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution was assessed by photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photoelectrocatalysis. The obtained results for model contaminants reveal that the process synergy between the photo and electric stimuli depends on the applied potential. Furthermore, the effect of the stirring rate of the dye solution on the discoloration efficiency was evaluated. The main features of the proposed flexible UV-LED strip light modified with titanium dioxide/graphite, as well as its performance for the degradation of organic pollutants, position it as a promising photoanode for its incorporation in photo-electrochemical reactors for water treatment.

Abstract:An innovative titanium-magnetite (Fe-Ti) catalyst was developed using a production strategy based on water-free solvents such as deep eutectic solvents (DES) for the removal of persistent pollutants. The prepared catalyst was applied in electro-Fenton and photo-electro-Fenton processes. To this end, a new cell design with electrodes based on conductive materials was developed using 3D printing in two different electrochemical cells configurations: vertical electrode configuration (VEC) and horizontal electrode configuration (HEC). The HEC showed good performance attaining a yield hydrogen peroxide production of 20 mg·L −1 and being able to operate in electro-Fenton degradation batch assays for the removal of the drugs (Antipyrine and Lissamine Green B). Then, the heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst (BC-FeTi) was tested and compared with the monometallic Fe catalyst (MC-Fe). The results with both catalysts showed a synergistic effect combining electrochemical oxidation and Fenton reaction, promoting the best removal of the target pollutants. Subsequently, the contribution of UV radiation was evaluated with BC-FeTi, achieving that more than 80 % of both pollutants were removed in 80 min by the photo-Fenton process, confirming the high affinity of oxidizing free radicals for high molecular weight organic molecules. Finally, the simultaneous application of electro- and photo-oxidation (photo-electro-Fenton) significantly improved the removal of the target contaminants from the aqueous solution, achieving complete removal in 50 and 80 min for Lissamine Green B and Antipyrine, respectively. The stability and reusability of BC-FeTi and 3D-printed electrodes were achieved in five successive working cycles, with negligible loss of activity compared to new catalysts, which achieved greater than 99 % removal after five consecutive runs. Leaching of iron and titanium from the catalyst evaluated throughout the cycles, was low, totalling 2.7 and 4.5 % at the end of the fifth cycle.

Abstract:In the present study, the synthesis of metal organic framework (MOF) template-derived materials is reported. Cubic Fe 2 O 3 ·TiO 2 material was synthesized by using Prussian blue as the sacrificed template and aqueous soluble TiOSO 4 as a TiO 2 precursor. The obtained material was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. The characterization confirmed the existence of cubic α-Fe 2 O 3 core and anatase TiO 2 shell in the composite. Furthermore, the appearance of TiO 2 shell has significantly enhanced the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area yet still retained small bandgap energy of around 2.0 eV. This material was employed to degrade chosen organic dyes, including cationic dyes and anionic dye, in a heterogeneous photo-Fenton like system. The experimental results showed that this material exhibited higher adsorption and degradation capacity toward cationic dyes than anionic dye. The fitting of experimental data into two kinetic models revealed that the removal of the dyes can be better described by Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. The recyclability of the catalyst was also examined.

Abstract:The exploration of cost-effective, eco-friendly, and remarkably efficient photocatalysts has been regarded as a promising strategy towards the decomposition of organic dyes. In this study, a facile one-pot hydrothermal approach was utilized to successfully create a novel adsorption photocatalyst (F-TiO2/SiO2/AC) based on activated carbon. This catalyst demonstrated high efficiency in the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) from wastewater. Experimental and characterization results indicate that the introduction of F ions and SiO2 induces lattice structure modifications and alters the surface functional groups of the material, leading to enhanced adsorption capacity. Moreover, these enhancements contribute to increased efficiency in the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and mitigation of electron-hole recombination. The sample achieved a degradation rate of 92.1 % in real wastewater conditions. This study not only offers valuable insights into the facile synthesis of complex activated carbon-based photocatalysts but also provides an effective strategy for rational design of electron transport pathways.

Preparation of Anatase Tio2/Ti Nanotube-Like Electrodes and Their High Photoelectrocatalytic Activity for the Degradation of Pcp in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:To further improve the photooxidation techniques for water and wastewater purification, we successfully prepared a new type of photoelectrode, a TiO2 nanotube electrode, first by a sol–gel method and then by treatment to form the tubular structure in NaOH aqueous solution. The structure, surface morphology and band gap energy of the Ti/TiO2 electrode were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and UV–vis absorption microscopy, respectively. The examination results indicated that anatase TiO2 was dominant in its composition and a significant blue-shift in the spectrum of UV–vis absorption was observed. The photoelectrochemical efficiency of the nanotube-like TiO2/Ti electrode has been determined in terms of photocurrent, degradation and mineralization of PCP. To investigate its potentials in environmental applications, we studied the degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in aqueous solution using photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) processes. The results were compared with those of electrochemical process (EP) and photocatalysis (PC). A significant photoelectrochemical synergetic effect was observed. The kinetic constant of PEC degradation of PCP using TiO2 nanotube electrode was 64.7% higher than that using TiO2 film electrode. The dependences of the rate constants on various parameters in the photoelectrocatalytic process, such as applied potential, electrolyte and pH value were investigated in detail. Degradation efficiency increased with increasing applied bias potential and concentration of Na2SO4. PEC degradation of PCP was more favorable in acidic solution than in alkali solution. There was an optimum pH value in the PEC process.
