Abstract:Deep and ultra-deep well exploration is rapidly becoming an important means to meet the enormous world oil and gas demands. Currently, many rheology builders exhibit poor salt tolerance and display low thermal stability at elevated temperatures, rendering them inefficient for deep-drilling operations. In this study, synthesis of a suitable polymer-based rheology enhancer with excellent thermal properties for water-based drilling muds (WBMs) was prepared. The novel polyviscosifier (PI) mainly consisted of 2-acrylamido-2-methy-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), 4-aminostyrene (VA), and a crosslinker divinylbenzene (DVB), synthesized via a free-radical copolymerization method. The experimental conditions were characterized by a combination of analyses namely FTIR, 1 H NMR, TEM, TGA, ESEM and elemental analysis. The rheological properties of PI as part of the drilling mud system were evaluated and compared with typical commercial viscosifier 80A51. The experimental results showed that adding the optimum PI concentration (1.5wt %) at the aging temperature of 180 °C can increase the rheological properties of the drilling mud by 81% compared to 41% of 80A51. PI demonstrated superb thermal resistance of up to 230 °C in salt-free condition, with a maximum decomposition temperature of 328 °C, and 180 °C under 15% brine saturated solution. The high thermal stability was induced by the rigid phenyl ring of 4-aminostyrene, whereas the para -amine functionality strongly enhanced the polymer/bentonite interaction in the drilling mud. PI displayed good shear resistance and larger hydrodynamic volume due to electrostatic repulsion and van der waals forces acting between the chains, compared to viscosifier 80A51 in drilling mud formulations. In general, PI exhibits excellent thermal stability and salt tolerance, promising for practical applications as a rheology additive for enhanced deep-oil recovery in industrial scale-up technology.

Abstract:High temperature would dramatically worsen rheological behaviors and increase filtration loss volumes of drilling fluids. Synthetic polymers with high temperature stability have attracted more and more attention. In this paper, a novel quadripolymer was synthesized using 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylamide (AM), sodium styrene sulfonate (SSS), and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC). Firstly, the molecular structure was studied by Fourier transform–infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) analysis. It was shown that the synthetic polymer contained all the designed functional groups. Moreover, the effect of temperature and the quadripolymer concentration on the rheological behavior and filtration loss of the bentonite-free drilling fluid were investigated. It was experimentally established that when the adding amount of the quadripolymer was 0.9 wt%, the prepared drilling fluid systems exhibited relatively stable viscosities, and the filtration losses could be controlled effectively after hot rolling aged within 180 °C. Further, it was confirmed that the bentonite-free drilling fluid containing the synthesized quadripolymer had good reservoir protection performance. In conclusion, the synthetic quadripolymer is a promising rheology modifier and a filtrate reducer for the development of the bentonite-free drilling fluid at high temperature.

Abstract:Summary Viscoelasticity plays a significant role in improving the performance of the drilling fluid by manipulating its elastic properties. An appropriate value of the first normal stress difference (N1), extensional viscosity (ηe), and relaxation time (θ) enhance the cutting transportability, hole-cleaning ability, filtration loss, and lubrication behavior. However, the performance of the drilling fluid deteriorates during the drilling of high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) wells under acid gas and salt(s) contamination. Therefore, it is a challenging task to synthesize a thermally and rheologically stable drilling fluid, which is acid as well as salt(s) resistant, and maintain its desired properties. Although several water-soluble synthetic polymer-based drilling fluids have been used widely for the drilling of HPHT wells, most of these are limited at less than 200°C. Polyanionic cellulose (PAC) has an excellent heat-resistant stability, salt tolerance, calcium and magnesium resistant, and strong antibacterial activity, and it exhibits exceptional filtration and rheological behavior under HPHT conditions. However, using PAC beyond 200°C is limited because of the presence of the biodegradable cellulose units in it. To use the extraordinary properties of PAC, it is aimed to increase the thermal stability of PAC through appropriate modification. In this study, PAC-grafted copolymers involving acrylamide (a salt-tolerant viscosifying agent), 2-acrylamide-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (a thermally stable lubricating and fluid-loss control agent), and sodium 4-styrene sulfonate (a high-temperature deflocculant) is synthesized optimally through maximizing the thermal degradation stability of the grafted copolymer and minimizing the filtration loss as well as the coefficient of friction (CoF) of the drilling fluid simultaneously. Optimally synthesized PAC-grafted copolymers are then used to prepare water-based mud (WBM) involving American Petroleum Institute (API)-grade bentonite and alpha-glycol functionalized nano fly ash, and the tests for steady shear viscosity and viscoelasticity are performed to determine the rheological stability of mud beyond 200°C. The amplitude sweep tests for viscoelasticity are performed to determine the linear viscoelasticity range (LVR), structural stability, gel strength, and dynamic yield point (YP), whereas frequency, time, and temperature sweep tests are performed to obtain the elastic modulus (G′), viscous modulus (G′′), and complex viscosity under HPHT conditions to check the stability of the drilling fluids under different holding times. Dynamic and static aging tests of the developed drilling fluids are performed at elevated temperature and pressure, and the aged muds are tested by evaluating the rheology, frictional, and filtration-loss behavior as per the API recommended procedure. The stability of the aged muds is also tested by evaluating the N1, ηe, and θ using a cone and plate rheometer. The performance of the proposed drilling fluids is also tested under acidic, sodium chloride (NaCl), and calcium chloride (CaCl2) environments at HPHT bottomhole conditions. The experimental results under HPHT conditions reveal that the performance of the mud (i.e., thermal stability, cutting transportability, hole-cleaning ability, filtration loss, and lubrication behavior) could be considerably improved by increasing the elastic properties of the drilling fluid by manipulating the molecular weight of the proposed PAC-grafted copolymer. Finally, the environmental effect of the developed muds is evaluated by finding the lethal concentration that kills 50% of the shrimp population (i.e., LC50) and the Hg and Cd contamination, and they are found to be environmentally safe.

A Zwitterionic Copolymer as Rheology Modifier and Fluid Loss Agents for Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Abstract:To overcome the negative impact on the rheological and filtration loss properties of drilling fluids caused by elevated temperature and salts contamination, which are common in ultradeep or geothermal drilling operations, it is imperative to develop highly efficient additives used in the water-based drilling fluid. In this study, a zwitterionic copolymer P (AM/DMC/AMPS/DMAM, ADAD) was synthesized by using acrylamide (AM), cationic monomer methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), anionic monomer 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) through free radical copolymerization. The copolymer was characterized by 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and zeta potential. The rheological behavior, filtration properties, and the performance exposure to salt or calcium contamination in water-based drilling fluid were investigated. The bentonite/polymer suspension showed improved rheological and filtration properties even after aging at 160 °C or a high concentration of salt and calcium. The filtration loss can be greatly reduced by more than 50% (from 18 mL to 7 mL) by the inclusion of 2.0 wt% copolymer, while a slight increase in the filtrate loss was observed even when exposed to electrolyte contamination. Particle size distribution and zeta potential further validate the idea that zwitterionic copolymer can greatly improve the stability of base fluid suspension through positive group enhanced anchoring on the clay surface and repulsion force between negative particles. Moreover, this study can be directed towards the design and application of zwitterionic copolymer in a water-based drilling fluid.
Laponite-polymer composite as a rheology modifier and filtration loss reducer for water-based drilling fluids at high temperature

Abstract:In the process of deep oil and gas drilling, high temperature and high amounts of salt will greatly deteriorate the rheological properties of water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs), increase the fluid loss of drilling fluids, and seriously threaten the safety of operations. It is urgent to develop new high-temperature and salt-resistant drilling fluid additives. In this study, a novel organic-inorganic polymer nanocomposite (P-RD') was synthesized by combining laponite and polymer, and its chemical structure and properties were characterized and evaluated by various experimental methods. The results show that P-RD' forms a spatial network structure in aqueous solution, and has good clay adsorption capacity and pore and crack sealing ability. At 180 °C and 15 wt% NaCl, it has good rheological stability to WBDFs, the American Petroleum Institute (API) filtration loss is only 7.1 mL, and the high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) filtration loss is controlled at 29.2 mL. P-RD' has dual functions, which can effectively strengthen the temperature and salt resistance of WBDFs, and is expected to be used as a rheology modifier and filtration loss reducer in high-temperature deep well drilling.

Abstract:With increasing global energy consumption, oil/gas drilling has gradually expanded from conventional shallow reservoirs to deep and ultra-deep reservoirs. However, the harsh geological features including high temperature and high salinity in ultra-deep reservoirs have become a critical challenge faced by water-based drilling fluids (WDFs), which seriously deteriorate the rheology and fluid loss properties, causing drilling accidents, such as wellbore instability and formation collapse. In this study, a novel temperature- and salt-resistant micro-crosslinked polyampholyte gel was synthesized using N,N-dimethylacrylamide, diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, maleic anhydride and chemical crosslinking agent triallylamine through free radical copolymerization. Due to the synergistic effect of covalent micro-crosslinking and the reverse polyelectrolyte effect of amphoteric polymers, the copolymer-based drilling fluids exhibit outstanding rheological and filtration properties even after aging at high temperatures (up to 200 °C) and high salinity (saturated salt) environments. In addition, the zeta potential and particle size distribution of copolymer-based drilling fluids further confirmed that the copolymer can greatly improve the stability of the base fluid suspension, which is important for reducing the fluid-loss volume of WDFs. Therefore, this work will point out a new direction for the development of temperature- and salt-resistant drilling fluid treatment agents.

Abstract:In deep well drilling, the filtration-loss reducer remarkably impacted the rheological property of water-based drilling fluids at high temperature and salinity, causing serious problems during the drilling process. In this work, a combination of low molecular weight amphoteric copolymer and bentonite clay was exploited to tackle these issues due to their relatively different thermal-saline-properties dependence. In detail, a novel amphoteric tetramer (AB-47) of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAm), 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), diallyl dimethylammonium chloride (DMDAAC), and N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) was prepared by free-radical copolymerization technique under optimal conditions. And the molecular structure of AB-47 was evidenced by FT-IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. The filtration and rheological performance of AB-47 in low solid-phase water-based mud (LSWBM) were examined in comparison with Driscal D before and after a 16 h aging at 230 °C according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) standard. Results indicated that, only 1% AB-47 could not only control an API filtration loss volume of 8.9 mL but also the change rate of main rheological parameters were found to be more stable while parameters of Driscal D containing mud not only varied dramatically but also an API filtration loss of 30 mL could be maintained under identical conditions. Although the contamination with NaCl affected both muds properties, AB-47 could still exhibit higher performance. Therefore, the relative stability of AB-47 containing mud with respect to the chemical environment could be achieved through the strong synergistic interactions between AB-47 and bentonite particles, which were examined through particle size distribution, zeta potential and scanning electron microscopic.

Abstract:Oil-based drilling fluids are widely used in challenging wells such as those with large displacements, deepwater and ultra-deepwater wells, deep wells, and ultra-deep wells due to their excellent temperature resistance, inhibition properties, and lubrication. However, there is a challenging issue of rheological deterioration of drilling fluids under high-temperature conditions. In this study, a dual-amphiphilic segmented high-temperature-resistant gelling agent (HTR-GA) was synthesized using poly fatty acids and polyether amines as raw materials. Experimental results showed that the initial decomposition temperature of HTR-GA was 374 °C, indicating good thermal stability. After adding HTR-GA, the emulsion coalescence voltage increased for emulsions with different oil-to-water ratios. HTR-GA could construct a weak gel structure in oil-based drilling fluids, significantly enhancing the shear-thinning and thixotropic properties of oil-based drilling fluids under high-temperature conditions. Using HTR-GA as the core, a set of oil-based drilling fluid systems with good rheological properties, a density of 2.2 g/cm3, and temperature resistance up to 220 °C were constructed. After aging for 24 h at 220 °C, the dynamic shear force exceeded 10 Pa, and G′ exceeded 7 Pa, while after aging for 96 h at 220 °C, the dynamic shear force exceeded 4 Pa, and G′′ reached 7 Pa. The synthesized compound HTR-GA has been empirically validated to significantly augment the rheological properties of oil-based drilling fluids, particularly under high-temperature conditions, showcasing impressive thermal stability with a resistance threshold of up to 220 °C. This notable enhancement provides critical technical reinforcement for progressive exploration endeavors in deep and ultra-deep well formations, specifically employing oil-based drilling fluids.

Abstract:Rheology modifiers are essential for the flat rheology of water-based drilling fluids in deepwater. The low temperature thickening of deepwater water-based drilling fluids results in dramatic rheological changes in the 20–30 °C range. To address such problems, NIPAM with a self-polymerized product LCST of 32–35 °C was selected as the main body for synthesis. While introducing the hydrophilic monomer AM to enhance the thickening properties, the hydrophobic monomer BA was selected to reduce the LCST of the product. In this paper, a temperature-sensitive polymeric rheology modifier (PNBAM) was synthesized by emulsion polymerization using N-isopropyl acrylamide, acrylamide, and butyl acrylate as monomers. The PNBAM was characterized using infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectroscopy (NMR). The rheological properties, temperature resistance, and salt resistance of PNBAM in the base fluid (BF) were tested. The performance of PNBAM in the drilling fluid system was also evaluated, and a water-based drilling fluid system of flat rheology for deepwater was formulated. The rheological modification mechanism of PNBAM was analyzed by turbidity analysis, particle size analysis, and zeta analysis. Experimental results show that PNBAM has good rheological properties. PNBAM is temperature resistant to 150 °C, salt-resistant to 30 wt%, and calcium resistant to 1.0 wt%. PNBAM also has good flat rheology characteristics in drilling fluid systems: AV4°C:AV25°C = 1.27, PV4°C:PV25°C = 1.19. Mechanistic analysis showed that the LCST (Lower Critical Solution Temperature) of 0.2 wt% PNBAM in an aqueous solution was 31 °C. Through changes in hydrogen bonding forces with water, PNBAM can regulate its hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties before and after LCST, which thus assists BF to achieve a flat rheological effect. In summary, the temperature-sensitive effect of PNBAM has the property of enhancing with increasing temperature. While the tackifying effect of conventional rheology modifiers diminishes with increasing temperature, the temperature-sensitive effect of PNBAM gives it an enhanced thickening effect with increasing temperature, making it a more novel rheology modifier compared to conventional treatment additives. After LCST, compared to conventional rheology modifiers (XC), PNBAM has a more pronounced thermo-thickening effect, improving the main rheological parameters of BF by more than 100% or even up to 200% (XC less than 50%). This contributes to the flat rheology of drilling fluids. PNBAM has good application prospects and serves as a good reference for the development of other rheology modifiers.

Abstract:High temperatures degrade drilling fluid performance and endanger drilling safety when drilling deep and ultra-deep wells. The development of a new high-temperature drilling fluid additive to maintain drilling fluid performance in high-temperature environments is critical. A polymer nanocomposite () was synthesized from the monomers styrene (St), methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylamide (AM), 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) through a free-radical copolymerization reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) were used to characterize the structure of , and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the microstructure of , indicating that it had a "star-net" structure. TGA analysis showed that the thermal decomposition temperature of was above 274 °C. The rheological and filtration properties of drilling fluids with were studied before and after aging at high temperatures (150–240 °C). The rheological model of the drilling fluid containing 2.5 wt% was found to be consistent with the Herschel-Buckley model. After aging at 220 °C, the filtration loss for API and HTHP was 8.4 mL and 29.8 mL, respectively. Using particle size analysis and zeta potential analysis, produced a drilling fluid with good particle size distribution and colloidal stability in high temperature environments. SEM analysis showed that adsorbed on the surface of the bentonite particles, which improved the compactness of the filter cake. The relative molecular weight (Mn) of decreased from 59671 to 5908 after degradation at high temperatures, and released polymer nanospheres, which effectively reduced the filtration loss of the drilling fluid.

Abstract:It is crucial to address the performance deterioration of water-based drilling fluids (WDFs) in situations of excessive salinity and high temperature while extracting deep oil and gas deposits. The focus of research in the area of drilling fluid has always been on filter reducers that are temperature and salt resistant. In this study, a copolymer gel (PAND) was synthesized using acrylamide, N-isopropyl acrylamide, and 3-dimethyl (methacryloyloxyethyl) ammonium propane sulfonate through free-radical polymerization. The copolymer gel was then studied using FTIR, NMR, TGA, and element analysis. The PAND solution demonstrated temperature and salt stimulus response characteristics on rheology because of the hydrophobic association effect of temperature-sensitive monomers and the anti-polyelectrolyte action of zwitterionic monomers. Even in conditions with high temperatures (180 °C) and high salinities (30 wt% NaCl solution), the water-based drilling fluid with 1 wt% PAND displayed exceptional rheological and filtration properties. Zeta potential and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the mechanism of filtration reduction. The results indicated that PAND could enhance bentonite particle colloidal stability, prevent bentonite particle aggregation, and form a compact mud cake, all of which are crucial for reducing the filtration volume of water-based drilling fluid. The PAND exhibit excellent potential for application in deep and ultra-deep drilling engineering, and this research may offer new thoughts on the use of zwitterionic polymer gel in the development of smart water-based drilling fluid.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrophobic associating polymers show great potential in formulation of high-performance drilling fluids, due to their hydrophobic associative ability in high-temperature and high-salt conditions. Herein, a novel amphoteric polyacrylamide of poly(acrylamide/2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid/methylacrylethyl trimethylammonium chloride) hydrophobically modified with epoxidized soybean oil denoted as PAADE was prepared and applied in water-based drilling fluid, and one without hydrophobic modification (PAAD) was also used for comparison. Compared with PAAD, PAADE displayed characteristic association behavior with a critical association concentration (CAC) of 0.3 w/v%, and a salt thickening phenomenon over 3 w/v% NaCl concentration. The impacts of PAADE and PAAD on rheological and filtration properties of bentonite-based drilling fluid (BTDF) were evaluated under different salinity. The fitted Herschel-Bulkley rheological parameters indicated that BTDF containing PAADE showed stronger yield stress, easier flowability and better salt resistance at a reasonable concentration below CAC. Meanwhile, PAADE largely reduced the fluid loss of BTDF before and after thermal aging at 150°C, showing high temperature tolerance. The addition of NaCl promoted larger reduction of filtration. The superior properties of PAADE in BTDF were revealed to be the competitive results of salt-induced hydrophobic association and inter-particles configuration transition. Moreover, the incorporation of epoxidized soybean oil improved the biodegradability of PAADE.
A micro-crosslinked amphoteric hydrophobic association copolymer as high temperature- and salt-resistance fluid loss reducer for water-based drilling fluids

Abstract:During ultradeep oil and gas drilling, fluid loss reducers are highly important for water-based drilling fluids, while preparing high temperature- and salt-resistance fluid loss reducers with excellent rheology and filtration performance remains a challenge. Herein, a micro-crosslinked amphoteric hydrophobic association copolymer (i.e., DADC) was synthesized using N,N-dimethyl acrylamide, diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid, hydrophobic monomer, and pentaerythritol triallyl ether crosslinker. Due to the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic association, and micro-crosslinking, the DADC copolymer exhibited outstanding temperature- and salt-resistance. The rheological experiments have shown that the DADC copolymer had excellent shear dilution performance and a certain degree of salt-responsive viscosity-increasing performance. The DADC copolymer could effectively adsorb on the surface of bentonite particles through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds, which bring more negative charge to the bentonite, thus improving the hydration and dispersion of bentonite particles as well as the colloidal stability of the drilling fluids. Moreover, the drilling fluids constructed based on the DADC copolymer exhibited satisfactory rheological and filtration properties (FLHTHP = 12 mL) after aging at high temperatures (up to 200 °C) and high salinity (saturated salt) environments. Therefore, this work provided new insights into designing and fabricating high-performance drilling fluid treatment agents, demonstrating good potential applications in deep and ultradeep drilling engineering.

Abstract:A graphical abstract of the role of zwitterionic filtrate reducer PANDS in high‐temperature and high‐salt environment. The development of high‐temperature and salt‐resistant filtrate reducer is of great significance to the exploitation of deep and ultra‐deep wells. In this study, Zwitterionic copolymer PANDS was synthesized by free radical polymerization using acrylamide (AM), N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), methacryloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) and sodium p‐styrene sulfonate (SSS) as monomers. Through orthogonal test, the optimum synthesis conditions were determined as follows: n (AM): n (NVP): n (SSS): n (DMC) = 3.5:2:0.5:0.5, the reaction temperature is 50°C, the initiator concentration is 0.4 wt%. The structure and thermal stability of the copolymers were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H‐NMR) and thermogravimetry (TG). In addition, the filtration reduction performance of PANDS was evaluated according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) standard. The mechanism of reducing filtration loss was studied by laser particle size analysis, Zeta potential and scanning electron microscope analysis of mud cake. The results show that PANDS has good temperature resistance and good filtrate loss reduction. With the addition of 1.5%PANDS, the filtrate loss of drilling fluid is 8.7 mL after aging at 160°C for 16 h, and can resist 6 wt% NaCl and 1 wt% CaCl2.

Abstract:The increasing demand for energy sources has led to oil field exploration under inhospitable conditions, where non-aqueous drilling fluids are commonly used due their physical and chemical stability. However, they exhibit a number of environmental constraints and the cuttings produced require expensive treatments before disposal. Aqueous drilling fluids are currently less thermally resistant and generally entail the use of chromium lignosulfonate as clay dispersant, which provides stability to rheological properties and filtration control under high temperature and high pressure (HTHP). This study elucidates the role played by synergic effect of a novel eco-friendly high-performance water-based drilling fluid using bentonite and vinyl polymers (polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PHPA)) as the main constituents. Filtration and rheological properties of the drilling fluids were determined on a HTHP filtration system and on a rotational viscometer, respectively. Systems using high molar mass PVP (HMM PVP) showed higher values for viscosity, gel strength and yield stress, due to promotion of flocculation. On the other hand, dispersed systems were obtained using low molar mass PVP (LMM PVP), through ion-dipole interactions between PVP and clay particles. Dispersed systems provided stable rheological parameters over the entire range of temperature and pressure studied (up to around 120 °C and 3450 kPa). Linear clay swelling tests showed that LMM PVP and water had similar profiles, promoting clay dispersion. Profitable low filtrate volumes (12 mL) were obtained for PVP-based drilling fluids in conditions where non-aqueous fluids are currently applied.

Abstract:An anionic polymer P (ANAN) of acrylamide, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid was synthesized through free radical polymerization and initiated by 2,2′-Azobis (2-methylpropionamide) dihydrochloride as an anti-high temperature and anti-calcium and magnesium contamination fluid loss control additive for water-based drilling fluid. The P (ANAN) was characterized by 13C-NMR and 1H-NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis and GPC analysis. The fluid loss tests were carried on different WBDFs. The results showed that this polymer can resist 4.5 × 105 ppm of Cl−1, 4 × 105 ppm of Ca2+ contamination at low pH environment caused by acid gas invasion in drilling fluid at 180 °C. The fluid loss control mechanisms of P (ANAN) were investigated by Zeta potential analysis, particle size distribution analysis and mud cake quality analysis. The thermal stability was investigated by TGA analysis. The results illustrate that the P (ANAN) exhibits a stronger interaction with clays and higher-temperature resistance, and it can improve the colloidal dispersion property obviously for drilling fluid under salts, calcium and magnesium contamination and even under circumstances of acid gas invasion conditions. Due to its superior fluid loss control properties, the P (ANAN) can be a promising polymer for water-based drilling fluid in deep and ultra-deep well drilling applications.

Thermoresponsive Bentonite for Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Abstract:As an important industrial material, bentonite has been widely applied in water-based drilling fluids to create mud cakes to protect boreholes. However, the common mud cake is porous, and it is difficult to reduce the filtration of a drilling fluid at high temperature. Therefore, this paper endowed bentonite with a thermo response via the insertion of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) monomers. The interaction between NIPAM monomers and bentonite was investigated via Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), isothermal adsorption, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) at various temperatures. The results demonstrate that chemical adsorption is involved in the adsorption process of NIPAM monomers on bentonite, and the adsorption of NIPAM monomers accords with the D-R model. With increasing temperature, more adsorption water was squeezed out of the composite when the temperature of the composite exceeded 70 °C. Based on the composite of NIPAM and bentonite, a mud cake was prepared using low-viscosity polyanionic cellulose (Lv-PAC) and initiator potassium peroxydisulfate (KPS). The change in the plugging of the mud cake was investigated via environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), contact angle testing, filtration experiments, and linear expansion of the shale at various temperatures. In the plugging of the mud cake, a self-recovery behavior was observed with increasing temperature, and resistance was observed at 110 °C. The rheology of the drilling fluid was stable in the alterative temperature zone (70-110 °C). Based on the high resistance of the basic drilling fluid, a high-density drilling fluid (ρ = 2.0 g/cm3) was prepared with weighting materials with the objective of drilling high-temperature formations. By using a high-density drilling fluid, the hydration expansion of shale was reduced by half at 110 °C in comparison with common bentonite drilling fluid. In addition, the rheology of the high-density drilling fluid tended to be stable, and a self-recovery behavior was observed.

Abstract:Water-soluble polymers can be used as key ingredients of both drilling fluids for virgin fields and polymer-enhanced oil recovery in underperforming reservoirs. The efficacy of hydrophobically associating heteropolymer (HAH-Polymer) as an agent for petroleum resource recovery was examined in this study. The hydrophobically associating heteropolymer (HAH-Polymer) comprising acrylamide, sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate, hydroxyethyl methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate was synthesized in micellar medium by free-radical polymerization. The hydrophobically associating heteropolymer (HAH-Polymer) was characterised by FTIR and 1H NMR spectral analyses. The effects of temperature, pH and shear on the solution behavior of the HAH-Polymer were also examined. Rheological and fluid loss properties of HAH-Polymer-incorporated water-based drilling fluids were assessed. The HAH-Polymer improved the thermal stability between 25 and 160 °C of the drilling mud and maintained mud fluid loss of 8.4–8.6 cm3 compared with the polymer-free blank of 43.5–107.0cm3. In a salt-contaminated mud, the heteropolymer enhanced rheological properties and significantly reduced API filtration loss to 7.6–8.8 cm3 after hot aging between 25 and 150 °C. Under high temperature–high pressure filtration testing of muds, the HAH-Polymer demonstrated excellent fluid loss reduction by providing about eightfold fluid loss control (14.7 cm3) compared to the polymer-free blank (113.2 cm3) at 150 °C.

Abstract:A novel micro‐crosslinked anionic polymer resistant to 230°C and 15 wt% NaCl, PKDASN, was synthesized using 3‐chloropropyltriethoxysilane, N, N‐dimethyl acrylamide, 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonic acid, N‐vinyl caprolactam, and sodium (4‐vinyl phenyl)methanesulfonate employing free radical polymerization. The polymer effectively adsorbed on the surface of bentonite particles through strong electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding, forming both a protective layer and network, thus reducing filtration. In this investigation, a new micro‐crosslinked anionic polymer resistant to elevated temperature and high salinity, PKDASN, was synthesized using 3‐chloropropyltriethoxysilane (KMB703), N, N‐Dimethylacrylamide (DMAM), 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), N‐vinyl caprolactam (NVCL), and sodium (4‐vinyl phenyl)methanesulfonate (SVM) employing free radical polymerization in a water‐based solution. The structure of PKDASN was analyzed using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, while its microstructure was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the pyrolysis temperature of PKDASN was above 294°C. Adding KMB703 enables the polymer to form a dense and stable spatial network. This intensified polymer network could interact with bentonite via intermolecular force and Coulomb force and form a dual grid structure, which presents impressive stability and control of filtration in saltwater. This is mainly achieved through creating a "silane coupling layer" on the particle surface by KMB703, which facilitates the crosslinking and aggregation of the polymer, thereby reinforcing the polymer's framework. This implies that under high‐temperature conditions of 230°C, 3 wt% PKDASN can improve the filtration effectiveness of drilling fluids and exhibit resistance to 15 wt% NaCl contamination. American Petroleum Institute filtration(FLAPI) and High temperature and high pressure filtration(FLHTHP) values were 4.6 and 23.0 mL, respectively. Therefore, this investigation provides a novel approach to utilizing the designated silane agent for the advancement of filtration loss additives in drilling fluids resistant to elevated temperature and high salinity.
