Abstract:Peptide-based hydrogels (PHGs) are biocompatible materials suitable for biological, biomedical, and biotechnological applications, such as drug delivery and diagnostic tools for imaging. Recently, a novel class of synthetic hydrogel-forming amphiphilic cationic peptides (referred to as series K), containing an aliphatic region and a Lys residue, was proposed as a scaffold for bioprinting applications. Here, we report the synthesis of six analogues of the series K, in which the acetyl group at the N-terminus is replaced by aromatic portions, such as the Fmoc protecting group or the Fmoc-FF hydrogelator. The tendency of all peptides to self-assemble and to gel in aqueous solution was investigated using a set of biophysical techniques. The structural characterization pointed out that only the Fmoc-derivatives of series K keep their capability to gel. Among them, Fmoc-K3 hydrogel, which is the more rigid one (G’ = 2526 Pa), acts as potential material for tissue engineering, fully supporting cell adhesion, survival, and duplication. These results describe a gelification process, allowed only by the correct balancing among aggregation forces within the peptide sequences (e.g., van der Waals, hydrogen bonding, and π–π stacking).

Self-Assembling Multidomain Peptides: Design and Characterization of Neutral Peptide-Based Materials with pH and Ionic Strength Independent Self-Assembly

Abstract:Self-assembly of peptides is a powerful method of preparing nanostructured materials. These peptides frequently utilize charged groups as a convenient switch for controlling self-assembly in which pH or ionic strength determines the assembly state. Multidomain peptides have been previously designed with charged domains of amino acids, which create molecular frustration between electrostatic repulsion and a combination of supramolecular forces including hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic packing. This frustration is eliminated by the addition of multivalent ions or pH adjustment, resulting in a self-assembled hydrogel. However, these charged functionalities can have profound, unintended effects on the properties of the resulting material. Access to neutral self-assembled nanostructured hydrogels may allow for distinct biological properties that are not available to highly charged analogues. Here, we designed a series of peptides to determine if self-assembly could be mediated by the steric interactions created by neutral hydroxyproline (O) domains, eliminating the need for charged residues and creating a neutral peptide hydrogel. The series of peptides, O n (SL)6O n , was studied to determine the effect of oligo-hydroxyproline on peptide self-assembly and nanostructure. We show that peptide solubility and nanofiber length increase with a higher number of hydroxyproline residues. Within this series, O5(SL)6O5 displayed the optimal properties for self-assembly and hydrogelation. In vitro, this hydrogel supports cell viability of fibroblasts, while in vivo it is infiltrated with cells and easily degraded over time without promoting a strong inflammatory response. This neutral self-assembling peptide hydrogel shows promising properties for biomedical, cell preservation, and tissue regeneration applications.

Abstract:Self-assembly peptide-based hydrogels are well known and popular in biomedical applications due to the fact that they are readily controllable and have biocompatibility properties. A dipeptide is the shortest self-assembling motif of peptides. Due to its small size and simple synthesis method, dipeptide can provide a simple and easy-to-use method to study the mechanism of peptides’ self-assembly. This review describes the design and structures of self-assembly linear dipeptide hydrogels. The strategies for preparing the new generation of linear dipeptide hydrogels can be divided into three categories based on the modification site of dipeptide: 1) COOH-terminal and N-terminal modified dipeptide, 2) C-terminal modified dipeptide, and 3) uncapped dipeptide. With a deeper understanding of the relationship between the structures and properties of dipeptides, we believe that dipeptide hydrogels have great potential application in preparing minimal biocompatible materials.

Abstract:The development of new tissue adhesives is still in great demand as the current available tissue adhesives cannot meet the requirements of sophisticated surgeries. One major limitation of current adhesives is difficult to balance the adhesive strength, the mechanical property and the responsive degradation rate. Herein, we report a new injectable and self-healable hydrogel, which can function as a multi-responsive tissue adhesive with on-demand degradation profile under different external stimuli. The adhesive hydrogel is composed of aldehyde functionalized hyaluronic acid (HA-CHO) and a disulfide containing crosslinker - 3,3'-dithiobis(propionic hydrazide) (DTPH). With the optimized formulation, the gelation can be formed within 1 min in situ. Multi responsive properties were introduced into this adhesive hydrogel, namely (1) Strain-responsive; (2) Reduction-responsive; (3) Oxidation-responsive; (4) Enzyme-responsive; and (5) UV-responsive properties. Bovine serum albumin (BSA)/Glutaraldehyde hydrogel - a commercial tissue adhesive BioGlue (R), was selected as the control. Remarkably, this new hydrogel showed much high lap shear adhesive strength (up to 120 kPa) to the porcine skin, which surpasses 65.8% to BioGlue (R). (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hydrogels are soft materials of great interest in different areas such as chemistry, biology, and therapy. Gels made by the self-assembly of small molecules are known as supramolecular gels. The modulation of their properties by monomer molecular design is still difficult to predict due to the potential impact of subtle structural modifications in the self-assembly process. Herein, we introduce the design principles of a new family of self-assembling cyclic octapeptides of alternating chirality that can be used as scaffolds for the development of self-healing hydrogelator libraries with tunable properties. The strategy was used in the preparation of an amphiphilic cyclic peptide monomer bearing an alkoxyamine connector, which allowed the insertion of different aromatic aldehyde pendants to modulate the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance and fine-tune the properties of the resulting gel. The resulting amphiphiles were able to form self-healable hydrogels with viscoelastic properties (loss tangent, storage modulus), which were strongly dependent on the nature and number of aromatic moieties anchored to the hydrophilic peptide. Structural studies by SEM, STEM and AFM indicated that the structure of the hydrogels was based on a dense network of peptide nanotubes. Excellent agreement was established between the peptide primary structure, nanotube length distributions and viscoelastic behaviour.

Abstract:<p>Natural hydrogels are widely investigated for biomedical applications because of their structures similar to extracellular matrix of native tissues, possessing excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, they are often susceptible to mechanical disruption. In this study, self-healing hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels are fabricated through a facile dynamic covalent Schiff base reaction. Dialdehyde-modified HA (AHA) precursor was synthesized, and then the AHA/cystamine dihydrochloride (AHA/Cys) hydrogels were formed by blending AHA and Cys at acidic pH levels. By varying Cys to AHA ratio, the hydrogel morphology, swelling and kinetics of gelation could be controlled. Gelation occurred fast, which was predominantly attributed to Schiff base reaction between the dialdehyde groups on AHA and amimo groups on Cys. The hydrogel exhibited improved mechanical properties with increase in Cys content. Furthermore, due to dynamic imine bonds, this hydrogel demonstrated excellent self-healing ability based on the stress after mechanical disruption. Also, it was found to be pH-responsive and injectable. Taken together, this kind of hyaluronic acid hydrogel can provide promising future for various biomedical applications in drug delivery, bioprinting, smart robots and tissue regeneration.</p>

Abstract:Hydrogels are a class of biomaterials used in the field of tissue engineering and drug delivery. Many tissue engineering applications depend on the material properties of hydrogel scaffolds, such as mechanical stiffness, pore size, and interconnectivity. In this work, we describe the synthesis of peptide/polymer hybrid double-network (DN) hydrogels composed of supramolecular and covalent polymers. The DN hydrogels were prepared by combining the self-assembled pentafluorobenzyl diphenylalanyl aspartic acid (PFB-FFD) tripeptide for the first network and the polymeric PNIPAM-PEGDA copolymer for the second network. During this process, self-assembled peptide nanostructures are cross-linked to the polyacrylamide group in the polymer network through non-covalent interactions. The PNIPAM-PEGDA:PFB-FFD hydrogel exhibited higher mechanical stiffness ( G ′ ∼2 kPa) than the PNIPAM-PEGDA copolymer. Moreover, PNIPAM-PEGDA:PFB-FFD hydrogel shows a decrease in pore size (∼1.2 μm) compared to the original copolymer (∼5.2 μm), with the structural framework of highly interconnected fibrous peptide network. The mechanical stiffness of hydrogels was systematically investigated by rheological analysis in response to various variables, including UV exposure time, concentration of peptides, and amino acid functionalization. Modulating the time of UV irradiation resulted in PNIPAM-PEGDA:PFB-FFD hydrogels with a four-fold increase in stiffness. The influence of amino acid side chains and terminal charge of peptides on the strength of DN hydrogels was also investigated using pentafluorobenzyl diphenylalanyl lysine (PFB-FFK). Interestingly, PFB-FFK, which has an amine group on the side chain, does not exhibit the DN structures. The mechanical properties and pore sizes of PNIPAM-PEGDA:PFB-FFK hydrogel were very similar to those of the PNIPAM-PEGDA copolymer due to poor cross-linking. The biocompatibility of the hydrogel materials was tested with the hMSC cell line using the MTT method, and the results indicate that the materials are non-toxic and potentially useful for biological applications.

Abstract:Peptides as unique supramolecular nanofibrous materials are favored choices to fabricate hydrogel for artificial extracellular matrices. Herein, we devised an amphiphilic polypeptide that could be motivated by multiple substances with positively charged group at physiological temperature and pH to assemble supramolecular nanofiber hydrogels since the electrostatic repulsion between monomers was attenuated. The hydrogelation phenomenon and spectroscopy were compatible with molecular dynamics simulations (MDs) results for revealing the assembly mechanism of this peptide, confirming that the behavior of assembling and the typical secondary structure of the assemblies was β -sheet. The impact of peptide concentration on the mechanical properties of hydrogels were described using rheology. We found that the peptide formed elastic gels from 0.3 wt% onwards in practical use and that these recovered by themselves after shear thinning that indicated they were injectable hydrogels. The successful establishment of cell spheres with high cell viability during 15 days culture in 3D space demonstrated the nanofiber hydrogels had potential in cell model construction and microtissue culture. Overall, the superior biologically friendly gel-forming conditions and excellent biological properties of this supramolecular assembly peptide material have invigorated the progress of biomedical fields such as tissue regeneration based on in vitro 3D culture.

Abstract:Self-assembly of peptide building blocks offers unique opportunities for bottom-up preparation of exquisite nanostructures, nanoarchitectures, and nanostructured bulk materials, namely hydrogels. In this work we describe the synthesis, characterization, gelation, and rheological properties of new dehydrotripeptides, Cbz-L-Lys(Cbz)-L,D-Asp-∆Phe-OH and (2-Naph)-L-Lys(2-Naph)-L,D-Asp-∆Phe-OH, containing a N-terminal lysine residue Nα,ε-bis-capped with carboxybenzyl (Cbz) and 2-Naphthylacetyl (2-Naph) aromatic moieties, an aspartic acid residue (Asp), and a C-terminal dehydrophenylalanine (∆Phe) residue. The dehydrotripeptides were obtained as diastereomeric mixtures (L,L,Z and L,D,Z), presumably via aspartimide chemistry. The dehydrotripeptides afforded hydrogels at exceedingly low concentrations (0.1 and 0.04 wt%). The hydrogels revealed exceptional elasticity (G' = 5.44 × 104 and 3.43 × 106 Pa) and self-healing properties. STEM studies showed that the diastereomers of the Cbz-capped peptide undergo co-assembly, generating a fibrillar 3D network, while the diastereomers of the 2-Naph-capped dehydropeptide seem to undergo self-sorting, originating a fibril network with embedded spheroidal nanostructures. The 2-Naph-capped hydrogel displayed full fast recovery following breakup by a mechanical stimulus. Spheroidal nanostructures are absent in the recovered hydrogel, as seen by STEM, suggesting that the mechanical stimulus triggers rearrangement of the spheroidal nanostructures into fibers. Overall, this study demonstrates that diastereomeric mixtures of peptides can be efficacious gelators. Importantly, these results suggest that the structure (size, aromaticity) of the capping group can have a directing effect on the self-assembly (co-assembly vs. self-sorting) of diastereomers. The cytotoxicity of the newly synthesized gelators was evaluated using human keratinocytes (HaCaT cell line). The results indicated that the two gelators exhibited some cytotoxicity, having a small impact on cell viability. In sustained release experiments, the influence of the charge on model drug compounds was assessed in relation to their release rate from the hydrogel matrix. The hydrogels demonstrated sustained release for methyl orange (anionic), while methylene blue (cationic) was retained within the network.

Abstract:Peptide hydrogels are widely used for biomedical applications owing to their good biocompatibility and unique advantages in terms of amino acid-based structures and functions. However, the exploration of the peptide/saccharide composite hydrogels as potential biomaterials for chronic diabetic wound healing is still limited. Herein, hyaluronic acid (HA) was incorporated into diphenylalanine (FF) conjugated with different aromatic moieties by a one-pot reaction. Our results showed that the dipeptide derivatives modified by benzene (B), naphthalene (N), and pyrene (P) self-assembled into composite hydrogels with uniform distribution and good mechanical properties in the presence of HA. The obtained N-FF/HA composite hydrogel exhibited greatly improved self-healing properties via injection syringe needle operation and good biocompatibility on human skin fibroblast (HSF) cells. Besides, the structure of thinner nanofibers and honeycomb networks inside the composite hydrogel allowed for a longer sustained release of curcumin, a hydrophobic drug for anti-inflammation and wound healing. The curcumin-loaded N-FF/HA composite hydrogels could promote chronic wound healing in the streptozotocin-induced type I diabetic mouse model. The results suggested that our developed saccharide-peptide hydrogels could serve as very promising synthetic biomaterials for applications in both drug delivery and wound healing in the future.

Preparation of Mechanically Stable Self-Assembled Peptides Hydrogels

Abstract:Peptide hydrogels are highly hydrophilic, three-dimensional network gels formed by the self-assembly of nanofibers or polymers, creating water-locking networks. Their morphology closely resembles that of the extracellular matrix, allowing them to exhibit both the biological functions of peptides and responsive gelation properties. These unique characteristics have led to their extensive application in tissue engineering, three-dimensional cell culture, cancer therapy, regenerative medicine, and other biomedical fields. This article describes three methods for preparing ECF-5 peptide hydrogels using self-assembling peptides with environmentally responsive gelation processes: (1) pH-responsive gelation: varying pH levels induce the protonation or deprotonation of amino acid residues, altering electrostatic interactions between peptide molecules and promoting their self-assembly into hydrogels; (2) Metal ion addition: polyvalent metal ions chelate with negatively charged amino acid residues, acting as bridges between peptides to form a network hydrogel; (3) Solvent exchange: hydrophobic peptides are initially dissolved in non-polar organic solvents and subsequently induce self-assembly into hydrogels upon transitioning to a polar aqueous environment. These methods utilize conventional experimental procedures to facilitate peptide self-assembly into hydrogels. By designing peptide sequences to align with specific gelation-inducing conditions, it is possible to achieve finely tuned micro/nanostructures and biological functions, highlighting the significant potential of peptide hydrogels in the biomedical domain.
Injectable Thermo-Responsive Peptide Hydrogels and Its Enzyme Triggered Dynamic Self-Assembly

Abstract:Endogenous stimuli-responsive injectable hydrogels hold significant promise for practical applications due to their spatio-temporal controllable drug delivery. Herein, we report a facile strategy to construct a series of in situ formation polypeptide hydrogels with thermal responsiveness and enzyme-triggered dynamic self-assembly. The thermo-responsive hydrogels are from the diblock random copolymer mPEG-b-P(Glu-co-Tyr). The L-glutamic acid (Glu) segments with different γ-alkyl groups, including methyl, ethyl, and n-butyl, offer specific secondary structure, facilitating the formation of hydrogel. The L-tyrosine (Tyr) residues not only provide hydrogen-bond interactions and thus adjust the sol–gel transition temperatures, but also endow polypeptide enzyme-responsive properties. The PTyr segments could be phosphorylated, and the phosphotyrosine copolymers were amphiphilies, which could readily self-assemble into spherical aggregates and transform into sheet-like structures upon dephosphorylation by alkaline phosphatase (ALP). P(MGlu-co-Tyr/P) and P(MGlu-co-Tyr) copolymers showed good compatibility with both MC3T3-E1 and Hela cells, with cell viability above 80% at concentrations up to 1000 μg/mL. The prepared injectable polypeptide hydrogel and its enzyme-triggered self-assemblies show particular potential for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Injectable and self-repairing hydrogels with tunable gelation time have excellent application prospects in drug release and tissue engineering. In this study, we synthesized the above hydrogels through acylhydrazone bonds between the polyacrylate containing the aldehyde group and azobenzene group (P(Azo-co-EGMA)) and the P(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylhydrazide) containing the hydrazide group (P(NIPAM-co-AH)). The gelation time (t sol–gel) could be controlled from a few seconds (<5 s) to several hours (20 h) by changing the total polymer concentration or the molecular weight of the polymers. After a period of hydrogel formation observed by the vial inversion method, the hydrogel reached a stable state, and the stable hydrogel state time (t stable) recorded by diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) was much longer than t sol–gel. The elasticity index (EI = 217391) of stabilized hydrogel Gel 7 formed by polymers with higher molecular weight was about five times that of hydrogel Gel 4 formed by polymers with lower molecular weight, and the elastic modulus (G′ = 1766 Pa) of Gel 7 at the same frequency was about four times that of Gel 4. Besides, the gelation behavior could also be adjusted by adding β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) and UV irradiation. The hydrogels displayed fast self-healing ability without any external stimuli and achieved pH-responsive sol–gel transition. Moreover, the hydrogels exhibited injectable ability and biocompatibility, which made the hydrogels more promising.

Abstract:Hydrogels are widely used in the field of biomedicine due to their high water content and strong drug loading capacity. Different types and quantities of amino acids are combined to form a wide variety of peptides. At the same time, the self-assembled peptide hydrogel is formed from the peptide into nanofibers, and the nanofibers are further wound to form a three-dimensional structure of the hydrogel. This special structure and the composition of the peptide give the hydrogel special characteristics and properties. Polypeptide-based self-assembled hydrogels have a variety of applications in the biomedical field. Therefore, it is of far-reaching significance to deeply understand polypeptide-based self-assembled hydrogels and explore their applications. This paper introduces the structure, preparation, properties, and biological applications of self-assembling peptide hydrogels. At the same time, the future development of peptide self-assembled gels is prospected.
A Supramolecular Hydrogel Enabled by the Synergy of Hydrophobic Interaction and Quadruple Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:The increasing preference for minimally invasive surgery requires novel soft materials that are injectable, with rapid self-healing abilities, and biocompatible. Here, by utilizing the synergetic effect of hydrophobic interaction and quadruple hydrogen bonding, an injectable supramolecular hydrogel with excellent self-healing ability was synthesized. A unique ABA triblock copolymer was designed containing a central poly(ethylene oxide) block and terminal poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) block, with ureido pyrimidinone (UPy) moieties randomly incorporated (termed MA-UPy-PEO-UPy-MA). The PMMA block could offer a hydrophobic microenvironment for UPy moieties in water and thus boost the corresponding quadruple hydrogen bonding interaction of Upy–Upy dimers. Owing to the synergetic effect of hydrophobicity and quadruple hydrogen bonding interaction, the obtained MA-UPy-PEO-UPy-MA hydrogel exhibited excellent self-healing properties, and injectable capability, as well as superior mechanical strength, and therefore, it holds great promise in tissue engineering applications, including in cell support and drug release.

Abstract:Self-assembly is a growth mechanism in nature to apply local interactions forming a minimum energy structure. Currently, self-assembled materials are considered for biomedical applications due to their pleasant features, including scalability, versatility, simplicity, and inexpensiveness. Self-assembled peptides can be applied to design and fabricate different structures, such as micelles, hydrogels, and vesicles, by diverse physical interactions between specific building blocks. Among them, bioactivity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability of peptide hydrogels have introduced them as versatile platforms in biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensing, and treating different diseases. Moreover, peptides are capable of mimicking the microenvironment of natural tissues and responding to internal and external stimuli for triggered drug release. In the current review, the unique characteristics of peptide hydrogels and recent advances in their design, fabrication, as well as chemical, physical, and biological properties are presented. Additionally, recent developments of these biomaterials are discussed with a particular focus on their biomedical applications in targeted drug delivery and gene delivery, stem cell therapy, cancer therapy and immune regulation, bioimaging, and regenerative medicine.

Abstract:Peptide hydrogels were believed to be potential biomaterials with wide application in the biomedical field because of their good biocompatibility, injectability, and three‐dimensional (3D) printability. Most of the previously reported polypeptide hydrogels are composed of L‐peptides, while the hydrogels formed by self‐assembly of D‐peptides are rarely reported. Herein, we reported a peptide hydrogel constructed by D‐J‐1, which was the all‐D‐enantiomer of antimicrobial peptide Jelleine‐1. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE‐SEM) and rheologic study were performed to characterize the hydrogel. Antimicrobial, hemostatic, and anti‐adhesion studies were carried out to evaluate its biofunction. Our results showed that D‐J‐1 hydrogel was formed by self‐assembly and cross‐linking driven by hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction, and π‐π stacking force of aromatic ring in the structure of D‐J‐1. It exhibited promising antimicrobial activity, hemostatic activity, and anti‐adhesion efficiency in a rat sidewall defect‐cecum abrasion model. In addition, it also exhibited good biocompatibility. Notably, D‐J‐1 hydrogel showed improved in vitro and in vivo stability when compared with its L‐enantiomer J‐1 hydrogel. Therefore, the present study would provide new insight into the application of D‐peptide hydrogel, and provide a new peptide hydrogel with antibacterial, hemostatic, and anti‐adhesion efficacy for clinical use. Abstract:Protein-based hydrogels are used for many applications, ranging from food and cosmetic thickeners to support matrices for drug delivery and tissue replacement. These materials are usually prepared using proteins extracted from natural sources, which can give rise to inconsistent properties unsuitable for medical applications. Recent developments have utilized recombinant DNA methods to prepare artificial protein hydrogels with specific association mechanisms and responsiveness to various stimuli. Here we synthesize diblock copolypeptide amphiphiles containing charged and hydrophobic segments. Dilute solutions of these copolypeptides would be expected to form micelles; instead, they form hydrogels that retain their mechanical strength up to temperatures of about 90 degrees C and recover rapidly after stress. The use of synthetic materials permits adjustment of copolymer chain length and composition, which we varied to study their effect on hydrogel formation and properties. We find that gelation depends not only on the amphiphilic nature of the polypeptides, but also on chain conformations--alpha-helix, beta-strand or random coil. Indeed, shape-specific supramolecular assembly is integral to the gelation process, and provides a new class of peptide-based hydrogels with potential for applications in biotechnology.

Abstract:The non-invasive tissue adhesives with strong tissue adhesion and good biocompatibility are ideal for replacing traditional wound treatment methods such as sutures and needles. The self-healing hydrogels based on dynamic reversible crosslinking can recover their structure and function after damage, which is suitable for the application scenario of tissue adhesives. Herein, inspired by mussel adhesive proteins, we propose a facile strategy to achieve an injectable hydrogel (DACS hydrogel) by grafting dopamine (DOPA) onto hyaluronic acid (HA) and mixing it with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) solution. The gelation time and rheological and swelling properties of the hydrogel can be controlled conveniently by adjusting the substitution degree of the catechol group and the concentration of raw materials. More importantly, the hydrogel exhibited rapid and highly efficient self-healing ability and excellent biodegradation and biocompatibility in vitro. Meanwhile, the hydrogel exhibited ~4-fold enhanced wet tissue adhesion strength (21.41 kPa) over the commercial fibrin glue. This kind of HA-based mussel biomimetic self-healing hydrogel is expected to be used as a multifunctional tissue adhesive material.

Abstract:Peptide-based hydrogels have gained considerable attention as a compelling platform for various biomedical applications in recent years. Their attractiveness stems from their ability to seamlessly integrate diverse properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, easily adjustable hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, and other functionalities. However, a significant drawback is that most of the functional self-assembling peptides cannot form robust hydrogels suitable for biological applications. In this study, we present the synthesis of novel peptide-PEG conjugates and explore their comprehensive hydrogel properties. The hydrogel comprises double networks, with the first network formed through the self-assembly of peptides to create a β-sheet secondary structure. The second network is established through covalent bond formation via N-hydroxysuccinimide chemistry between peptides and a 4-arm PEG to form a covalently linked network. Importantly, our findings reveal that this hydrogel formation method can be applied to other peptides containing lysine-rich sequences. Upon encapsulation of the hydrogel with antimicrobial peptides, the hydrogel retained high bacterial killing efficiency while showing minimum cytotoxicity toward mammalian cells. We hope that this method opens new avenues for the development of a novel class of peptide-polymer hydrogel materials with enhanced performance in biomedical contexts, particularly in reducing the potential for infection in applications of tissue regeneration and drug delivery.
