Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The aim of this meta-analysis is to assess the effectiveness of the combined administration of problem-based learning (PBL) and lecture-based learning (LBL) teaching models in Chinese medical education.MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched the following Chinese electronic databases: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, WanFang Data, China Science Periodical Database, and the Chinese BioMedical Literature Database. We also searched the following English electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Google Search Engine. We searched for published studies involving the combined administration of PBL+LBL teaching models in Chinese medical education. All randomized controlled trials were included. The focus of the meta-analysis was on the outcomes of knowledge scores, skill scores, medical writing scores, comprehensive ability scores and teaching satisfaction. A subgroup analysis was also performed.RESULTS: A total of 23 RCTs were included, with a total sample size of 2589 medical students. The PBL+LBL teaching model significantly increased knowledge scores (95% CI, 2.85-5.78; P < .00001), skill scores (95% CI, 0.51-3.71; P = .01), medical writing scores (95% CI, 1.04-4.04; P = .0009), comprehensive ability scores (95% CI, 2.04-8.71; P = .002) and teaching satisfaction (RR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.10-1.59; P = .003) compared with the LBL teaching model alone. Additionally, a subgroup analysis showed significant differences in the effect of PBL+LBL on knowledge scores, medical writing scores, and comprehensive ability scores when comparing practical and theoretical courses. Another subgroup analysis that looked at the level of training showed that the PBL+LBL teaching model also significantly improved the knowledge scores of Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Masters students.DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Based on the current evidence, this meta-analysis showed that the PBL+LBL teaching model is an effective way to increase knowledge scores, skill scores, medical writing scores, and comprehensive ability scores and to improve teaching satisfaction.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Although the problem-based learning (PBL) emerged in 1969 and was soon widely applied internationally, the rapid development in China only occurred in the last 10 years. This study aims to compare the effect of PBL and lecture-based learning (LBL) on student course examination results for introductory Chinese undergraduate medical courses.METHODS: Randomized and nonrandomized controlled trial studies on PBL use in Chinese undergraduate medical education were retrieved through PubMed, the Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE), Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and VIP China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP-CSTJ) with publication dates from 1st January 1966 till 31 August 2014. The pass rate, excellence rate and examination scores of course examination were collected. Methodological quality was evaluated based on the modified Jadad scale. The I-square statistic and Chi-square test of heterogeneity were used to assess the statistical heterogeneity. Overall RRs or SMDs with their 95% CIs were calculated in meta-analysis. Meta-regression and subgroup meta-analyses were also performed based on comparators and other confounding factors. Funnel plots and Egger's tests were performed to assess degrees of publication bias.RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 31studies and 4,699 subjects. Fourteen studies were of high quality with modified Jadad scores of 4 to 6, and 17 studies were of low quality with scores of 1 to 3. Relative to the LBL model, the PBL model yielded higher course examination pass rates [RR = 1.09, 95%CI (1.03, 1.17)], excellence rates [RR = 1.66, 95%CI (1.33, 2.06)] and examination scores [SMD = 0.82, 95%CI (0.63, 1.01)]. The meta-regression results show that course type was the significant confounding factor that caused heterogeneity in the examination-score meta-analysis (t = 0.410, P<0.001). The examination score SMD in "laboratory course" subgroup [SMD = 2.01, 95% CI: (1.50, 2.52)] was higher than that in "theory course" subgroup [SMD = 0.72, 95% CI: (0.56, 0.89)].CONCLUSIONS: PBL teaching model application in introductory undergraduate medical courses can increase course examination excellence rates and scores in Chinese medical education system. It is more effective when applied to laboratory courses than to theory-based courses.

Abstract:The problem-based learning (PBL) is increasingly used in undergraduate education. However, the application of integrated PBL to medical undergraduate education has not been well assessed. An observational study was designed to compare integrated PBL combined with lecture-based classroom (LBC) with traditional LBC teaching in 2 semesters of a Medical School in China. This study was conducted from March 2021 to July 2022. A total of 118 undergraduates majoring in clinical medicine were randomly allocated in 2 groups, 1 group receiving the integrated PBL + LBC teaching (experimental group, n = 60) and another group receiving LBC teaching (control group, n = 58). The experimental group attended the integrated PBL courses for the basic and clinical medicine conducted in the 6th and 8th semesters, respectively, as well as taking the LBC courses. The experimental group was required to preview the course materials before class, make presentations in class and take online feedback questionnaires after class, while the control group was required to preview the textbooks and listen to the traditional LBC courses. The students' scores of these 2 groups were compared, and feedback questionnaires were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the experimental group over the control group. Results showed that the experimental group scored significantly higher than the control group in Clinical Skills (95% confidence interval [CI] 4.19-5.89), Internal Medicine I (95% CI: 1.85-9.93), Internal Medicine II (95% CI: 8.07-15.90), Introduction to Surgery (95% CI: 5.08-10.25), Surgery (General Surgery) (95% CI: 7.82-12.72), Surgery (Specialty) (95% CI: 6.47-9.97), and Clinical Medical Level Test (95% CI: 1.60-5.15) (all P < .01). In the feedback questionnaires of integrated PBL, up to 80% and 90% of students were satisfied with the teaching methods and lecturers, respectively. More than 80% of students agreed that the integrated PBL improved their abilities to learn independently, understand knowledge, and to raise, analyze and solve problems. In terms of stress in and out of class, a small number of students, <36.7%, felt stressed. The integrated PBL combined with LBC is an effective teaching approach, which may provide new ideas for teaching research and reform on undergraduate medical education in clinical medicine specialty and other medical majors.
Problem-based or lecture-based learning, old topic in the new field: a meta-analysis on the effects of PBL teaching method in Chinese standardized residency training

Abstract:Abstract Background Standardized residency training (SRT) is crucial for graduate medical education and the training of high-quality doctors. Nevertheless, China started SRT nationwide only in the recent decade. During these years, researchers have been searching for suitable teaching methods to improve the abilities of residents. Although the problem-based learning (PBL) teaching mode has been applied in undergraduate teaching for many years, the teaching effect of PBL has not been unified in Chinese SRT according to the core competences of the residents. Methods Studies that compared the teaching effect of PBL and lecture-based learning (LBL) on SRT in China from January 2010 to April 2020 in the Chinese databases, such as China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang, WeiPu, Chinese BioMedical Literature (CBM), and English-language online databases, such as PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were systematically reviewed. Data were analyzed using the Stata version 12.0 software. Results A total of 75 articles (76 studies) were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with LBL group, PBL-based methods are more effective in the mastery of medical theory knowledge (WMD = 7.14, 95% CI: 5.93–8.34), operational skills (WMD = 6.54, 95% CI: 4.55–8.53), analysis and diagnosis of cases (WMD = 8.52, 95% CI: 7.50–9.53), and overall capacity (WMD = 8.70, 95% CI: 6.87–10.53), but showed no advantage on operational skills in diagnostic imaging (WMD = 1.30, 95% CI: -0.11–2.71). The questionnaire surveys analyzed in this meta-analysis indicated the positive effects of PBL on the mastery of theoretical knowledge, clinical diagnostic thinking, teamwork ability, ability to analyze and solve problems, ability to consult documents, learning interest and learning efficiency, but that there were no advantages in improving self-directed learning ability, communication ability and hands-on ability. The questionnaire result analyzed in this meta-analysis also showed the residents’ satisfaction with PBL-based strategies. Conclusions Taken together, the current meta-analysis provides a systematic and comprehensive analysis on PBL teaching mode in Chinese SRT and outlines a path for further research on the detailed design of suitable teaching methods for different specialties and abilities.

Abstract:Background PBL approach has been widely used in many Chinese universities over the past decade. However, the effects of PBL approach on medical psychology education in China are inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the PBL approach was superior to the lecture-based teaching method in the context of the medical psychology curriculum in China. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to confirm the effectiveness of PBL in Chinese medical psychology. Corresponding databases were searched for available studies, where data were extracted to calculated Hedges’ g and its 95% confidence interval in total and subgroup analyses. Subgroup analyses were also carried out. Results Nine studies with 551 cases and 496 controls were identified. The total examination scores of students in the PBL approach group were significantly higher compared with students in the traditional lecture-based teaching group under the random effect model (Hedges’ g = 1.510, 95%CI 0.792–2.227, p<0.001). Subgroup analyses based on major and school system exhibited similar results. Conclusions Our study supported the notion that the PBL approach may be applicable to Chinese medical psychology education.

Effects of problem-based learning versus lecture-based learning in teaching of rehabilitation medicine in China: a Meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective To compare problem-based learning (PBL) versus lecture-based learning (LBL) in the teaching of rehabilitation medicine in China.Methods All Chinese articles on PBL and LBL in teaching of rehabilitation medicine courses indexed in CBMdisc,Wanfang database,CNKI database,and Google academic search published prior to October 2017 were included.The methodological quality of the selected studies was assessed with'Cochrane Quality Evaluation Standard'.Meta analyses were performed using RevMan 5.3.Results After exclusion of non-eligible citations,a total of 18 documents involving 1943 subjects were satisfied the criteria and were included in this review.Meta-analyses revealed that PBL had a significant improvements on theoretical knowledge examination scores (MD=9.26,95％CI=5.24 to 13.29),practical skills examination scores (MD=12.11,95％CI=5.17 to 19.06),performance excellent rate (RR=3.90,95％CI=2.10 to 7.26),and patient satisfaction rate (RR=8.98,95％CI=4.23 to 19.07) (P＜0.05) among students compared with LBL in teaching of rehabilitation.Conclusion In this meta analysis,PBL is superior to LBL and worthy popularizing in teaching of rehabilitation.
Application and evaluation of problem-based learning in undergraduate clinical education in 2014-2018

Objectives: In recent years, the rapid development of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in Chinese medical colleges and universities is a self-directed learning mode comprising student- centered, issue-based and discussion-centered. This study evaluates the quality of PBL implementation and examines factors that affect the medical learning effect. Methods: Based on the continuous application of PBL course among 234 of undergraduates majoring in clinical medicine from 2014 to 2018, we assessed the learning effect and curriculum implementation through examination and questionnaire. Results: PBL preliminarily promotes the learning abilities of medical students in several aspects, including literature inquiry ability (83.76%), autonomous learning ability (74.79%), teamwork ability (60.26%), interpersonal communication ability (61.11%), language expression ability (72.22%) and critical thinking ability (53.85%). However, further analysis reveals that there are still many underlying issues to be solved, such as rapid decrease of learning interest and involvement, low learning efficiency in unit time, etc. We make a thorough discussion and put forward some recommendations. Conclusions: This study indicates that PBL is an effective learning mode for undergraduate medical education, which would be beneficial by flexible adjustment of PBL curriculum practice, applying different cases in accordance with student's aptitude and enhancing the training of experienced clinical tutors.
Impacts of blended learning with BOPPPS model on Chinese medical undergraduate students: a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis of 44 studies

Abstract:Background: With the development of Internet information technology, especially the impact of the sudden outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic, along with the call for "classes suspended but learning continues," a large number of medical educators have learned and experienced online teaching. They have understood the shortcomings of traditional teaching methods. Not only the blended BOPPPS teaching mode combines the advantages of the BOPPPS teaching mode but also the online teaching platform breaks through the limitation of time and space. However, a general consensus on the effectiveness of the blended BOPPPS teaching strategy in China is lacking, and few studies use quantitative synthesis to evaluate the effectiveness of this teaching strategy. Hence, this study aimed to assess the overall effectiveness of online and offline blended BOPPPS teaching strategies in higher medical education in China compared with the lecture-based learning (LBL) teaching model. Methods: Studies that blended learning with the BOPPPS model in China from January 2000 to October 2023 were searched in the Chinese and English-language online databases. We analyzed the objective and subjective scores of students and performed subgroup analysis for specialties and online teaching platforms. The data were analyzed using the Stata version 14.0 software. The quality assessment was performed using the Jadad scoring scale. Results: Forty-four studies were included in this meta-analysis. Compared with the LBL mode, the blended the BOPPPS teaching mode was more effective in terms of the overall capacity [standardized mean difference (SMD) = 1.193, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.813-1.572], mastery of medical theory knowledge (SMD = 1.090, 95% CI: 0.730-1.450), and practical skills (SMD = 1.246, 95% CI: 0.799-1.693). The analyzed questionnaire surveys indicated the positive effects of the blended BOPPPS teaching mode on classroom satisfaction, autonomous learning ability, learning interest, teamwork ability, interpersonal skills, ability to analyze and solve problems, group interaction, learning engagement, and learning strategies. Conclusions: The study underscored that the blended BOPPPS teaching mode could effectively improve the comprehensive quality of students. The subjective scores also indicated that students generally preferred this novel teaching mode.
Effectiveness of bridge-in, objective, pre-assessment, participatory learning, post-assessment, and summary teaching strategy in Chinese medical education: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:The BOPPPS teaching strategy has been used recently in many medical courses as an improved and more practical pedagogy in China. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of this pedagogy has not been fully assessed in terms of knowledge and skill outcomes in medical education. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the BOPPPS strategy compared with traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) in Chinese medical education. The English electronic databases of Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library and the Chinese electronic databases of CNKI, CQVIP, Wanfang, and CBM were used to search the publications related to the BOPPPS teaching strategy before 6 Jun 2022. Eligibility publications were retrieved and the data were extracted by two researchers independently according to the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Quality analysis was performed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, and the meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 and StataSE. We retrieved 367 records and 41 studies with a total of 5,042 medical students in the meta-analysis, which included 34 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 7 Cohort studies. In the cumulative meta-analysis, BOPPPS strategy significantly increased skill scores (SS) (SMD: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.00-1.30, P < 0.00001), knowledge examination scores (KES) (SMD: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.24-1.89, P < 0.00001), comprehensive ability scores (CAS) (SMD: 1.22, 95%CI: 0.85-1.59; P < 0.00001), and teaching satisfaction (TS) (OR: 3.64; 95%CI: 2.97-4.46; P < 0.0001) compared to the LBL model among those medical students. Statistically similar results were obtained in the sensitivity analysis. These results showed that the BOPPPS method is an effective teaching strategy for Chinese medical students to improve SS, knowledge scores, CAS, and TS when compared with LBL in medical education. Because of the limited quantity and quality of the included studies, further rigorous studies are needed to conclude with more confidence.

Abstract:Recently, there has been a concerted effort within medical schools to depart from conventional lecture-based learning approaches to alternative teaching methods such as team-based learning (TBL) and problem-based learning (PBL), with the aim of enhancing both student engagement and instructional efficacy. Despite this shift, a comprehensive review that directly compares the impacts of PBL and TBL methods in medical education is lacking. This study seeks to address this gap by conducting a meta-analysis that compares the effects of TBL and PBL in the context of medical education.

A SUPPLY SIDE THEORY OF THIRD PARTY CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

Abstract:We develop and test a theory of the supply side of third party conflict management. Building on an existing formal model of mediation (Kydd, 2003), we consider the influence of broad, top-down systemic forces on mediator decisions. Our previous work suggests that a strong democratic community and its institutions bolster the likelihood that third party mediation will occur. We integrate this effect of the democratic community into a game theoretic mediation model by adding a simple cost term that punishes a mediator for lying about one side’s resolve for fighting and getting caught. By increasing the supply of credible mediators, global movements toward a strong democratic community increase the likelihood that potential mediators will intervene in contentious conflicts. Empirical analyses of dyadic data from 18162001 provide support for our theory, with third party conflict management occurring more frequently when the strength of the democratic community and global institutions rises. We also find that democratic and powerful states serve as mediators more often, and that trade ties, alliances, issue salience, and distance influence third party decisions to mediate. Reflection on the geographic distribution of multiple sclerosis in France

Abstract:The geographic distribution of multiple sclerosis within the 95 Départements and the 21 Régions of France was defined from a 1986 nationwide prevalence series derived from questionnaires. This indicated a significant clustering of high frequency regions in the northeastern part of the country with most significantly low areas in the south and west. Distributions were similar to those for MS death rates by Département and Région for 1968–1977, indicating geographic stability over time; but there was also evidence of diffusion over time. The 1986 prevalence distribution was also compared with all published prevalence rates for communities of France. From all these resources we conclude that all of France falls within the “high frequency zone” for MS, that the nationwide prevalence rate is at least 50 per 100000 population, and that there is evidence of geographic clustering of the disease with temporal spread of the cluster.
Enhancement of Medical Students' Performance and Motivation in Pathophysiology Courses: Shifting From Traditional Instruction to Blended Learning

Abstract:Blended learning is a learning approach that combines face-to-face classroom lectures and e-learning. It has grown rapidly to be commonly used in medical institutions, especially in the local medical universities where there is lack of qualified teachers and instructional materials. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are the latest revolution in e-learning and provides learners with access to quality educational resources. Nevertheless, there is seldom reports concerning how to effectively integrate MOOCs into blended learning in local universities, as well as the evaluation of knowledge outcomes. In order to achieve this aim, a blended learning approach was carried out in teaching pathophysiology in Guilin Medical University. This blended learning model was based on combination of Chinese University MOOC with case based learning (CBL), as an alternative to conventional learning. The medical students in the 2017 and 2018 classes received the blended learning method, while the medical students in the 2015 class received the traditional classroom instruction. The results showed that students in the 2017 and 2018 performed significantly better than students in the 2015 class at mid-term exam and the final exam. Perception surveys also revealed that both students and teachers had positive attitude toward blended learning, and they shared similar viewpoints of blended learning. A large proportion of students and teachers believed that the blended learning enhanced students' motivation to learn independently, improved their time management skills, and allowed them to experience personalized learning. Also, most students and teachers recognized that Chinese University MOOC provided substantial educational resources suitable for their need. In addition, teachers indicated that the blended learning improved student learning quality, facilitated interaction between teachers and students, and helped them to establish a student-centered model in teaching pathophysiology. Overall, the blended learning method that combines Chinese University MOOC with CBL is effective in enhancing students' achievement and motivation in pathophysiology than the traditional learning method, and helps to strengthen the cultivation of talent in local medical universities.

Abstract:Background: With the advancement of society, the cultivation of medical professionals equipped with solid theoretical knowledge, a strong sense of innovation, and critical thinking has become a crucial goal in the reform of medical higher education. Over recent years, the hybrid Problem-Based Learning (hPBL) model, a blend of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Lecture-Based Learning (LBL), has emerged as a novel approach in the medical education reform landscape of China. The application and efficacy of the hPBL model in medical experimental courses have piqued the interest of medical educators. The aim of this study was to appraise the application and effectiveness of the hPBL model in the experimental course of Medical Molecular Biology at Beihua University. Methods: Utilizing the "Rain Classroom" platform, students from the Preventive Medicine and Medical Imaging programs were allocated to either the hPBL or LBL method for their Medical Molecular Biology experimental courses. The hPBL model's impact on students' performance was evaluated across four domains: experimental theory, experimental operation, experimental report, and practical application. Questionnaires were employed to gauge students' experiences and perceptions. Results: The results indicated that the final assessment scores of the hPBL group were significantly superior to those of the LBL group. Moreover, the hPBL model effectively amplified students' self-learning capability, practical application skills, and communication competencies. Students expressed a high degree of satisfaction with this blended learning model. Conclusion: The hPBL model, which amalgamates PBL and LBL, has demonstrated its effectiveness in medical education. Its implementation in the experimental course of Medical Molecular Biology at Beihua University yielded positive outcomes, enhancing students' performance and satisfaction levels. Consequently, it is recommended that the hPBL model be further promulgated in other medical experimental courses.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: In North America, where it was born, problem-based learning (PBL) has seen dips and rises in its popularity, but its inherent strengths have led to its spread to medical schools all over the world. Although its use at medical schools in some Western countries has already been examined, no one has looked at its status in many other countries, including China. The aim of this study is to determine the number of schools currently using PBL in China, the degree to which they use it, and the reasoning behind such usage.METHODS: We used survey and internet search to examine PBL usage at Chinese medical schools. We were able to collect data from 43 first-class Chinese medical schools that are geographically diverse and thus representative of medical schools all across China.RESULTS: 34 (79.1%) of the 43 medical schools use PBL in the preclinical curriculum. Of the 34, data were collected from 24 (70.6%) medical schools regarding the extent of their PBL usage. Nine (37.5%) schools use PBL for less than 10% of preclinical hours, 14 (58.3%) schools use PBL for 10-50% of preclinical hours, and one (4.2%) school uses PBL for more than 50% of preclinical hours.CONCLUSION: In our sample of Chinese medical institutions, a large majority of schools use PBL, however, most schools use it for less than 50% of total preclinical curricular hours. Our results suggest that schools are interested in increasing the number of curricular hours devoted to PBL but are constrained by resources.

Modified task-based learning program promotes problem-solving capacity among Chinese medical postgraduates: a mixed quantitative survey

Abstract:Background: Despite great advances, China's postgraduate education faces many problems, for example traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) method provides fewer oppotunities to apply knowledge in a working situation. Task-based learning (TBL) is an efficient strategy for increasing the connections among skills, knowledge and competences. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a modified TBL model on problem-solving abilities among postgraduate medical students in China. Methods: We allocated 228 first-year postgraduate students at Third Military Medical University into two groups: the TBL group and LBL group. The TBL group was taught using a TBL program for immunohistochemistry. The curriculum consisted of five phases: task design, self-learning, experimental operations, discussion and summary. The LBL group was taught using traditional LBL. After the course, learning performance was assessed using theoretical and practical tests. The students' preferences and satisfaction of TBL and LBL were also evaluated using questionnaires. Results: There were notable differences in the mean score rates in the practical test (P < 0.05): the number of high scores (>80) in the TBL group was higher than that in the LBL group. We observed no substantial differences in the theoretical test between the two groups (P > 0.05). The questionnaire results indicated that the TBL students were satisfied with teaching content, teaching methods and experiment content. The TBL program was also beneficial for the postgraduates in completing their research projects. Furthermore, the TBL students reported positive effects in terms of innovative thinking, collaboration, and communication. Conclusions: TBL is a powerful educational strategy for postgraduate education in China. Our modified TBL imparted basic knowledge to the students and also engaged them more effectively in applying knowledge to solve real-world issues. In conclusion, our TBL established a good foundation for the students' future in both medical research and clinical work.

Abstract:Background The recent application of blended educational methods has impacted medical education and has drawn attention to a new teaching method. This teaching style presents unique opportunities and challenges. We investigated the effects of blended learning and traditional teaching methods on clinical skill development. Methods We sorted 200 medical students from Tongji Medical College at Huazhong University of Science and Technology into a control or experimental group. The control group was taught with a traditional lecture-based learning method and the experimental group was taught using a blended learning method. The two groups were compared after training to assess their theoretical and practical differences. A student satisfaction survey was given to participants in both groups. Results The results of the experimental group’s theoretical and practical assessments were found to be significantly higher ( p < 0.05) than that of the control group. The student satisfaction survey showed that blended learning was significantly more effective for acquiring relevant knowledge, enhancing student-centered learning and improving clinical practice. Conclusions Blended learning may address deficiencies in clinical skills, make up for limited time and space, and ensure learning efficiency and quality.

Abstract:Background The flipped classroom blended learning model has been proven effective in the teaching of undergraduate medical courses as shown by student acceptance and results. Since COVID-19 necessitated the application of online learning in Histology practical for MBBS students, the effectiveness of the blended learning model on teaching quality has required additional attention. Methods A blended learning of histology practical was flipped in a virtual classroom (FVCR-BL) or in a physical classroom (FPCR-BL) in School of Medicine, Zhejiang University in China. Students were split into FVCR-BL group (n = 146) due to COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 or were randomly allocated into FPCR-BL group (n = 93) in 2021, and retrospectively, students with traditional learning in 2019 were allocated into traditional learning model in a physical classroom (PCR-TL) group (n = 89). Same learning requirements were given for 3 groups; all informative and summative scores of students were collected; a questionnaire of student satisfaction for blended learning activities were surveyed in 2021. Data of scores and scales were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test in SPSS Statics software. Results The results clarified that FPCR-BL students obtained higher final exam scores and were more likely to engage in face-to-face interactions with instructors than FVCR-BL students. FPCR-BL and FVCR-BL students had higher classroom quiz scores than the PCR-TL students owing to the contribution of blended learning. The results of the questionnaire showed that participants of FPCR-BL positively rated the online learning and preview test, with a cumulative percentage of 68.31%, were more satisfying than other learning activities of blended learning. There were significant correlations (r = 0.581, P < 0.05) between online learning and the other three blended learning strategies. Conclusions In the flipped classroom with a blended learning process of histology practical, enhancing the quality of online learning boosts student satisfaction and improves knowledge learning; peer-to-peer interactions and instructor-to-peer interactions in the physical classroom improved knowledge construction.

Abstract:Objective To compare the effectiveness of problem-based learning combined with evidence-based medicine(PBL-EBM) and problem-based learning (PBL) model on clinical teaching of urology.Methods Students were selected by sampling in PBL group (n =56) and PBL-EBM group (n =51),and the two groups received clinical teaching of urology by PBL and PBL-EBM model respectively.At the end of the study,each student received objective and subjective evaluation.Results There was no significant difference in results of the baseline on evidence-based medicine between two groups (P＞0.05),but the percentage of high-recommended-level research evidence obtained by the students in the PBL-EBM group was significantly higher than that in PBL group (P＜0.05).And questionnaire showed more students in PBL-EBM group believed that this teaching model improved their ability of comprehensive analysis and application of medical evidence,and developed their skills in solving problem and obtaining information on various subjects (P＜0.05).Conclusions The model of problem-based learning combined with evidencebased medicine is feasible and effective in clinical teaching of urology and optimize the outcomes from PBL education.By the PBL-EBM model teaching,students improve the ability to advantage in managing evidence from medical studies,analyzing and solving problem,obtaining and applying medical information.
