Abstract:Supplemental oxygen, used to treat hypoxia in preterm and term neonates, increases the risk of neonatal lung diseases, such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and asthma. There is a known sex predilection for BPD, but the underlying mechanisms are not clear. We tested the hypothesis that altered, local estradiol following hyperoxia contributes to pathophysiological changes observed in immature lung. In human fetal airway smooth muscle (fASM) cells exposed to normoxia or hyperoxia, we measured the expression of proteins involved in estrogen metabolism and cell proliferation responses to estradiol. In fASM cells, CYP1a1 expression was increased by hyperoxia, whereas hyperoxia-induced enhancement of cell proliferation was blunted by estradiol. Pharmacological studies indicated that these effects were attributable to upregulation of CYP1a1 and subsequent increased metabolism of estradiol to a downstream intermediate 2-methoxyestradiol. Microarray analysis of mouse lung exposed to 14 days of hyperoxia showed the most significant alteration in CYP1a1 expression, with minimal changes in expression of five other genes related to estrogen receptors, synthesis, and metabolism. Our novel results on estradiol metabolism in fetal and early postnatal lung in the context of hyperoxia indicate CYP1a1 as a potential mechanism for the protective effect of estradiol in hyperoxia-exposed immature lung, which may help explain the sex difference in neonatal lung diseases.
MicroRNA-mRNA interactions in a murine model of hyperoxia-induced bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Abstract:Background Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a chronic lung disease of premature neonates characterized by arrested pulmonary alveolar development. There is increasing evidence that microRNAs (miRNAs) regulate translation of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) during lung organogenesis. The potential role of miRNAs in the pathogenesis of BPD is unclear. Results Following exposure of neonatal mice to 80% O 2 or room air (RA) for either 14 or 29 days, lungs of hyperoxic mice displayed histological changes consistent with BPD. Comprehensive miRNA and mRNA profiling was performed using lung tissue from both O 2 and RA treated mice, identifying a number of dynamically regulated miRNAs and associated mRNA target genes. Gene ontology enrichment and pathway analysis revealed that hyperoxia modulated genes involved in a variety of lung developmental processes, including cell cycle, cell adhesion, mobility and taxis, inflammation, and angiogenesis. MiR-29 was prominently increased in the lungs of hyperoxic mice, and several predicted mRNA targets of miR-29 were validated with real-time PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Direct miR-29 targets were further validated in vitro using bronchoalveolar stem cells. Conclusion In newborn mice, prolonged hyperoxia induces an arrest of alveolar development similar to that seen in human neonates with BPD. This abnormal lung development is accompanied by significant increases in the levels of multiple miRNAs and corresponding decreases in the levels of predicted mRNA targets, many of which have known or suspected roles in pathways altered in BPD. These data support the hypothesis that dynamic regulation of miRNAs plays a prominent role in the pathophysiology of BPD.
Constant and Cycling Incubation Temperatures Have Long-Term Effects on the Morphology and Metabolic Rate of Japanese Quail

Abstract:Incubation temperature can have profound effects on growth and development of embryos and young birds. However, few studies have examined the role that cycling incubation temperature may play in phenotypic variation and whether these effects persist to adulthood. We incubated Japanese quail eggs at control temperatures (37.5°C), at low temperatures (36.0°C), and under a cyclical treatment that maintained the same average temperature as the low treatment (36.0°C) with high temperatures that were the same as the control (37.5°C) and low temperatures that still allowed for development of the embryo (28.0°C). Individuals in the low treatment group were smaller in mass and size than individuals in the control group but had an increased basal metabolic rate relative to individuals in the cyclical treatment group. Temperature cycling offset the effects of low incubation temperatures on metabolic rate and embryonic development but not the effects on adult mass and size. Although Japanese quail are sexually size dimorphic, with females larger than males, we could detect no evidence of sex-specific sensitivity to suboptimal incubation temperatures. These results highlight the importance of incubation temperature and pattern as sources of morphological and physiological variation of adult birds.

Abstract:Research on birds suggests that extreme weather events during development may have long-lasting consequences on form and function. The underlying cellular mechanisms mediating such phenotypic effects are poorly studied. We raised Japanese quail in warm (30oC) or cold (10oC) temperatures from hatching until adulthood, and then measured mitochondrial metabolism in intact blood cells at representative normothermic body temperature (41oC) and a hyperthermic temperature (45oC) that quail commonly attain when heat stressed. To investigate whether any developmental effects were reversible, half of the cold- and warm-acclimated birds were assigned to a common garden (20oC) 3 weeks before the measurements. Across groups, hyperthermia was associated with increased proton leak, but decreases in both phosphorylating respiration (where ATP is produced) and working capacity of the mitochondria. Cold-acclimated birds were more strongly affected by heat stress: the increase in proton leak was 1.6-fold higher, and the decrease in phosphorylating capacity during endogenous respiration was 1.7-fold greater, compared to warm-acclimated birds. These differences did not remain in the common-garden birds. Our study suggests that developmental cold acclimation is traded off against heat tolerance at the level of cellular metabolism, with implications for our understanding of avian responses to climate change.

Risk factors for bone loss with prostate cancer in Korean men not receiving androgen deprivation therapy.

Abstract:PURPOSE Preexisting bone loss in men with prostate cancer is an important issue due to the accelerated bone loss during androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). In addition, a high prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level has been reported to be related to bone metabolism. This study assessed the factors associated with osteoporosis in Korean men with non-metastatic prostate cancer before undergoing ADT. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study enrolled patients admitted for a prostate biopsy because of a high PSA or palpable nodule on a digital rectal examination. We divided the patients (n = 172) according to the results of the biopsy: group I, non-metastatic prostate cancer (n = 42) and group II, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH; n = 130). The lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) was evaluated using quantitative computed tomography. The demographic, health status, lifestyle, body mass index (BMI), serum testosterone concentration, and disease variables in prostate cancer (Gleason score, clinical stage, and PSA) were analyzed prospectively to determine their effect on the BMD. RESULTS The estimated mean T-score was higher in group I than in group II (-1.96 +/- 3.35 vs. -2.66 +/- 3.20), but without statistic significance (p = 0.235). The significant factors correlated with BMD in group I were a high serum PSA (Beta = -0.346, p = 0.010) and low BMI (Beta = 0.345, p = 0.014) in the multiple linear regression model. Also old age (r = -0.481, p = 0.001), a high serum PSA (r = -0.571, p < 0.001), low BMI (r = 0.598, p < 0.001), and a high Gleason's score (r = -0.319, p = 0.040) were the factors related to BMD in the correlation. The significant factors correlated with BMD in group II were old age (Beta = -0.324, p = 0.001) and BMI (Beta = 0.143, p = 0.014) in the multiple linear regression model. CONCLUSIONS The risk factors for osteoporosis in men with prostate cancer include a low BMI, and elevated serum PSA. Monitoring BMD from the outset of ADT is a logical first step in the clinical strategy to avoid or minimize potential bone-related complications in these patients.
Thermoregulatory consequences of growing up during a heatwave or a cold snap in Japanese quail

Abstract:Changes in environmental temperature during development can affect growth, metabolism and temperature tolerance of the offspring. We know little about whether such changes remain to adulthood, which is important to understand the links between climate change, development and fitness. We investigated whether phenotypic consequences of the thermal environment in early life remained in adulthood in two studies on Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). Birds were raised under simulated heatwave, cold snap or control conditions, from hatching until halfway through the growth period, and then in common garden conditions until reproductively mature. We measured biometric and thermoregulatory [metabolic heat production (MHP), evaporative water and heat loss (EWL, EHL) and body temperature] responses to variation in submaximal air temperature at the end of the thermal acclimation period and in adulthood. Warm birds had lower MHP than control birds at the end of the thermal acclimation period and, in the warmest temperature studied (40°C), also had higher evaporative cooling capacity compared with controls. No analogous responses were recorded in cold birds, although they had higher EWL than controls in all but the highest test temperature. None of the effects found at the end of the heatwave or cold snap period remained until adulthood. This implies that chicks exposed to higher temperatures could be more prepared to counter heat stress as juveniles but that they do not enjoy any advantages of such developmental conditions when facing high temperatures as adults. Conversely, cold temperature does not seem to confer any priming effects in adolescence.

Abstract:Al-based thin-film metallizations are used as electrical interconnections in integrated circuits and in most of discrete, active components L1]. After deposition at temperatures T between 400 and 450K by evaporat ion or sputtering, different thermal treatments work on the metallizations: The baking of photoresists and the ion etching upto T 320K, the alloying of ohmic contacts with Si upto T-720K, the die bonding and the thermosonic wire bonding at T-500K, the moulding of the encapsulation at T-430K. After the production steps the components are subject to softsoldering on printed-circuit boards with T>520K and thermal cycling during the application between T-220K and T=500K. The time st eps at the named temperatures range between few and 103s, the thermal rates get up to T102Ks-1. Due to the filmn thickness h'1i, the grain sizes d.,5pm and the concentration of lattice defects the thermal treatments cause changes in the film structure and local chemical composition. As the filrns and Si wafers have different coefficients of thermal expansion aF and cr.,.and the substrates are much thicker and mechanically rnore rigid than the films, the films are subjected to thermal compressive or tensile strains. The induced stresses exceed the yield point of the films. The straln relaxation of the metal films during continuous changes in T is explained in terms of diffusional creep [2], of dislocation slip [13] and by comparison of the different driving forces working on mobile grain boundaries and vacancies in the grains [4]. Metals with low stacking fault energy show discontinuous grain growth [5]. Al-based films exhibit the formation of hillocks [6,7] which is not yet explained quantitatively. The purpose of this paper is to learn the kinetics of partially reversible and of irreversible defect reaction mechanisms in Al-based thin-film metallizations on substrates from the measurement of stress relaxation during thermomechanical treatments. It will be shown that the sequence of diffusional creep and of the growth of single grains are sensitively dependent on the thermal and mechanical history. Changes in dc resistance indicate the production of lattice defects under tensile stress and the absorption under compressive stress. initial grain sizes are (100.. . 300)nm of the evaporated and (1...3)pm foir the sputtered films measured by line interception of TEM micrographs. The lateral macrostresses in the films are >1.OMPa at 300K measured by the substrate curvature before and after the removal of the Al films by chemical etching.
Anatomical and histological changes in the oviducts of Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, after embryonic exposure to ethynyloestradiol

Abstract:Oestrogen is needed for normal oviductal development in female birds, but excessive early exposure to oestrogen can cause oviductal abnormalities and impair egg-laying ability. In this study, the anatomical and histological effects of in ovo exposure to the synthetic oestrogen ethynyloestradiol on the oviducts of immature and adult female Japanese quail, Coturnix japonica, were investigated. A series of abnormalities was observed after injection of ethynyloestradiol (2 or 20 ng g(-1) egg) into the yolk on day 3 of incubation. Ethynyloestradiol induced precocious differentiation of the luminal epithelium and tubular glands in immature chicks. Right-side oviduct retention occurred at all the ages studied, whereas certain other effects were not evident until sexual maturity. The left oviduct was reduced in size and tubular gland density in the uterus (shell gland) was reduced in sexually mature birds that had been treated with ethynyloestradiol. The utero-vaginal junction was longer than in control birds and had a higher tubular gland density. The epithelial cells in the magnum were taller in birds treated with ethynyloestradiol. Embryonic exposure to the environmental contaminant ethynyloestradiol may cause persisting structural malformations in oviducts of quails, which can impair fertility. As oviductal malformations are indicative of embryonic exposure to exogenous oestrogen, they are potentially useful as biomarkers of xenooestrogen exposure in wild bird populations.

Abstract:Abstract During late lung development, alveolar and microvascular development is finalized to enable sufficient gas exchange. Impaired late lung development manifests as bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) allows for assessment of complex cellular dynamics during biological processes, such as development. Here, we use MULTI-seq to generate scRNA-seq profiles of over 66,000 cells from 36 mice during normal or impaired lung development secondary to hyperoxia with validation of some of the findings in lungs from BPD patients. We observe dynamic populations of cells, including several rare cell types and putative progenitors. Hyperoxia exposure, which mimics the BPD phenotype, alters the composition of all cellular compartments, particularly alveolar epithelium, stromal fibroblasts, capillary endothelium and macrophage populations. Pathway analysis and predicted dynamic cellular crosstalk suggest inflammatory signaling as the main driver of hyperoxia-induced changes. Our data provides a single-cell view of cellular changes associated with late lung development in health and disease.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of hyperoxia on the expression of lung heme oxygenase-1(HO-1) in rat pups.Methods 21-d-old male Sprague-Dawley rat pups were randomly divided into 5 groups: room-air control group and 12,24,48,72 hours hyperoxia groups.The rat pups were continuously exposed to oxygen(92%～94%) and normal atmosphere respectively.The left lung wet/dry weight ratio and the histological examination were performed.The expressions of lung HO-1 mRNA and HO-1 protein were also measured by RT-PCR and Western blot,respectively.Results The expressions of lung HO-1 mRNA in 12 hours hyperoxia group(0.350±0.043) and HO-1 protein in 24 hours hyperoxia group(0.455±0.046) were increased as compared to those in the normal atmosphere(0.263±0.037,0.280±0.044),and the increase was more significant with the longer hyperoxia exposure(P<0.05,P<0.01).Compared with the normal atmosphere control,the left lung wet/ dry weight ratio and the lung injury scores was significantly increased in 48 hours hyperoxia group and 72 hours hyperoxia group(P<0.05,P<0.01).Conclusion Hyperoxia can induce the increase of lung heme oxygenase-1 expression in rat pups.
Frequency Optimization for Dynamic Measurements of Wide-range Moisture Content using Microwave

Abstract:This paper describes dynamic and static measurement methods for wide-range moisture content of agricultural products such as rice and silage. The proposed method uses the attenuation and phase shift of the microwave transmitted signal through a microstrip transmission line (MSTL) sensor. The results of dynamic measurements of rice samples with low moisture content(< 18 %) showed close agreement with those of static measurements. Furthermore, the proposed method showed possibility to measure the silage samples with high moisture content (69.8 % to 79.5 %). To optimize the measurement frequency, the linearity between moisture content and slope (dB/radian) were evaluated. As a result, the best linearity was obtained at 2.46 GHz. Impact of early feed restriction and continued supplementation with coated organic acid and essential oils on sustainability of laying performance, egg quality, fertility, hatchability, immunity status, and gut microbiota of Japanese quail hens

Abstract:Abstract Three hundred and sixty, 42-day-old Japanese quail (JQ) hens were randomly divided into six experimental groups with 5 replicates/group. Each replicate consisted of 12 birds (8 females and 4 males). During the growing period, chickens were fed restricted (FR) during only the second week of age at days 7, 9, 11, and 13. Three levels of FR were applied: 0.0 (control), 12.5 (12.5FR), and 25.0% (25FR) of the ad libitum intake of chickens measured on the previous day (groups 1, 2 and 3). In the other three groups (4, 5 and 6) the control, 12.5FR and 25.0FR diets were supplemented with coated organic acid + essential oils (COAWEO ) at 100 g/ton feed. The trial lasted from 6 to 18 weeks of age. Feed intake was significantly reduced by 12.5% FR compared with the control group. FR improved all external and internal egg quality of JQ hens except for egg weight, while albumen % decreased in the group fed 12.5FR diet. Coated organic acid with essential oils did not affect all JQ hens’ external and internal egg quality. Feed restriction did not affect fertility, pipped and dead chicks, and hatchability, as total and fertile egg percentage. COAWEO increased fertility and hatchability percentage. FR did not affect blood serum biochemistry and immunity characteristics except for high density lipoprotein (HDL) and hemagglutination inhibition test for infectious bursal disease virus (HI IBDV). Coated organic acid with essential oils did not affect quail blood characteristics but significantly decreased total lipids and increased IL6 at 18 weeks of age. Dietary COAWEO decreased E. coli, Clostridia, and Salmonella while increasing Lactobacillus counts. It can be concluded that 25.0% FR supplemented with COAWEO considerably improved the sustainability of productive performance of JQ hens without adverse effects on egg production, quality, fertility and hatchability traits, serum biochemistry and immune markers, and gut microbiota.

Abstract:Stochastic chaos induced by diffusion processes, with identical spectral density but different probability density functions (PDFs), is investigated in selected lightly damped Hamiltonian systems. The threshold amplitude of diffusion processes for the onset of chaos is derived by using the stochastic Melnikov method together with a mean-square criterion. Two quasi-Hamiltonian systems, namely, a damped single pendulum and damped Duffing oscillator perturbed by stochastic excitations, are used as illustrative examples. Four different cases of stochastic processes are taking as the driving excitations. It is shown that in such two systems the spectral density of diffusion processes completely determines the threshold amplitude for chaos, regardless of the shape of their PDFs, Gaussian or otherwise. Furthermore, the mean top Lyapunov exponent is employed to verify analytical results. The results obtained by numerical simulations are in accordance with the analytical results. This demonstrates that the stochastic Melnikov method is effective in predicting the onset of chaos in the quasi-Hamiltonian systems.
Functional inhibition of deep brain non-visual opsins facilitates acute long day induction of reproductive recrudescence in male Japanese quail

Abstract:For nearly a century, we have known that brain photoreceptors regulate avian seasonal biology. Two photopigments, vertebrate ancient opsin (VA) and neuropsin (OPN5), provide possible molecular substrates for these photoreceptor pathways. VA fulfills many criteria for providing light input to the reproductive response, but a functional link has yet to be demonstrated. This study examined the role of VA and OPN5 in the avian photoperiodic response of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). Non-breeding male quail were housed under short days (6L:18D) and received an intracerebroventricular infusion of adeno-associated viral vectors with shRNAi that selectively inhibited either VA or OPN5. An empty viral vector acted as a control. Quail were then photostimulated (16L:8D) to stimulate gonadal growth. Two long days significantly increased pituitary thyrotrophin-stimulating hormone β-subunit (TSHβ) and luteinizing hormone β-subunit (LHβ) mRNA of VA shRNAi treated quail compared to controls. Furthermore, at one week there was a significant increase, compared to controls, in both hypothalamic gonadotrophin releasing hormone-I (GnRH-I) mRNA and paired testicular mass in VA shRNAi birds. Opn5 shRNAi facilitated the photoinduced increase in TSHβ mRNA at 2 days, but no other differences were identified compared to controls. Contrary to our expectations, the silencing of deep brain photoreceptors enhanced the response of the reproductive axis to photostimulation rather than preventing it. In addition, we show that VA opsin plays a dominant role in the light-dependent neuroendocrine control of seasonal reproduction in birds. Together our findings suggest the photoperiodic response involves at least two photoreceptor types and populations working together with VA opsin playing a dominant role.
Effects of Oxygen Concentrations on Developmental Competence and Transcriptomic Profile of Yak Oocytes

Abstract:Summary Oxygen concentration influences oocyte quality and subsequent embryo development, but it remains unclear whether oxygen concentrations affect the developmental competence and transcriptomic profile of yak oocytes. In this study, we investigated the effects of different oxygen concentrations (5% versus 20%) on the developmental competence, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, glutathione (GSH) content, and transcriptomic profile of yak oocytes. The results showed that a low oxygen concentration significantly increased the maturation rate of yak oocytes (81.2 ± 2.2% vs 75.9 ± 1.3%) and the blastocyst quality of yak in vitro fertilized embryos. Analysis of ROS and GSH showed that a low oxygen concentration reduced ROS levels and increased the content of GSH (75.05 ± 7.1 ng/oocyte vs 50.63 ± 5.6 ng/oocyte). Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis identified 120 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the two groups of oocytes. Gene enrichment analysis of the DEGs indicated multiple cellular processes, including oxidative phosphorylation, transcription regulation, mitochondrial regulation, oestrogen signalling pathway, HIF-1 signalling pathway, TNF signalling pathway, were involved in the response to oxygen concentration alterations. Taken together, these results indicated that a low oxygen concentration improved the developmental competence of yak oocytes.
Single-embryo transcriptomic atlas of oxygen response reveals the critical role of HIF-1α in prompting embryonic zygotic genome activation

Abstract:Adaptive response to physiological oxygen levels (physO 2 ; 5% O 2 ) enables embryonic survival in a low-oxygen developmental environment. However, the mechanism underlying the role of physO 2 in supporting preimplantation development, remains elusive. Here, we systematically studied oxygen responses of hallmark events in preimplantation development. Focusing on impeded transcriptional upregulation under atmospheric oxygen levels (atmosO 2 ; 20% O 2 ) during the 2-cell stage, we functionally identified a novel role of HIF-1α in promoting major zygotic genome activation by serving as an oxygen-sensitive transcription factor. Moreover, during blastocyst formation, atmosO 2 impeded H3K4me3 and H3K27me3 deposition by deregulating histone-lysine methyltransferases, thus impairing X-chromosome inactivation in blastocysts. In addition, we found atmosO 2 impedes metabolic shift to glycolysis before blastocyst formation, thus resulting a low-level histone lactylation deposition. Notably, we also reported an increased sex-dimorphic oxygen response of embryos upon preimplantation development. Together, focusing on genetic and epigenetic events that are essential for embryonic survival and development, the present study advances current knowledge of embryonic adaptive responses to physO 2 , and provides novel insight into mechanism underlying irreversibly impaired developmental potential due to a short-term atmosO 2 exposure.

Long-term fasting induced basal thermogenesis flexibility in female Japanese quails

Abstract:Male Japanese quails ( Coturnix japonica ) have been found to exhibit a three-phase metabolic change when subjected to prolonged fasting, during which basal thermogenesis is significantly reduced. A study had shown that there is a significant difference in the body temperature between male and female Japanese quails. However, whether female Japanese quails also show the same characteristic three-phase metabolic change during prolonged fasting and the underlying thermogenesis mechanisms associated with such changes are still unclear. In this study, female Japanese quails were subjected to prolonged starvation, and the body mass, basal metabolic rate (BMR), body temperature, mass of tissues and organs, body fat content, the state-4 respiration (S4R) and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) activity in the muscle and liver of these birds were measured to determine the status of metabolic changes triggered by the starvation. In addition, the levels of glucose, triglyceride (TG) and uric acid, and thyroid hormones (T 3 and T 4 ) in the serum and the mRNA levels of myostatin ( MSTN ) and avian uncoupling protein ( av-UCP ) in the muscle were also measured. The results revealed the existence of a three-phase stage similar to that found in male Japanese quails undergoing prolonged starvation. Fasting resulted in significantly lower body mass, BMR, body temperature, tissues masses and most organs masses, as well as S4R and CCO activity in the muscle and liver. The mRNA level of av-UCP decreased during fasting, while that of MSTN increased but only during Phase I and II and decreased significantly during Phase III. Fasting also significantly lowered the T 3 level and the ratio of T 3 /T 4 in the serum. These results indicated that female Japanese quails showed an adaptive response in basal thermogenesis at multiple hierarchical levels, from organismal to biochemical, enzyme and cellular level, gene and endocrine levels and this integrated adjustment could be a part of the adaptation used by female quails to survive long-term fasting.

Abstract:The objective of the present study was to evaluate a blend of functional oils (FO) composed of copaiba and garlic essential oils, pepper oleoresin and cashew nut liquid to mitigate the effects of heat stress on productivity, egg quality, organ morphology of the gastrointestinal tract, serum biochemical profile, nutrient metabolism and body temperature of Japanese quail. A completely randomized design was used in a 3 × 2 factorial scheme (without additive; 300 and 500 mg FO/kg of feed x birds raised in a thermal comfort (TC) and heat stress (HS) environment), with 6 replicates of 8 birds per plot. The birds under HS had lower feed intake (P = 0.0000), egg mass (P = 0.0000), laying rate (P = 0.0000) and higher percentage of infertile non-commercial eggs (P = 0.0004), lower head temperature amplitude (P = 0.0000) and higher average of body temperature (P = 0.0312). HS worsened the external and internal quality of the eggs. Birds kept in HS showed higher values of cholesterol (P = 0.0000) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (P = 0.0272). The use of 300 and 500 g FO/ton of feed improved the feed conversion (P = 0.0000) and egg mass (P = 0.0000) of the quail bred under HS, respectively, by 8.4 and 7.2% and increased the relative weight of liver (P = 0.0064) and pancreas (P = 0.0492). The use of such additives also provided a higher % of yolk (P = 0.0018) and reduced the percentage of albumen (P = 0.0029) of the eggs produced in TC, in addition to reducing the amplitude of head temperature (P = 0.0484) of birds bred under HS. The breeding of Japanese quail under HS results in negative impacts on the production, physiological and qualitative aspects of the eggs. The use of 300 g/ton of FO in the diet of Japanese quail leads to improvements in feed conversion, increased liver capacity in nutritional metabolism and results in eggs with a higher proportion of yolks, being, therefore, an alternative for feeding quail in a hot climate.
