Abstract:Chemical contamination is an increasingly important conservation issue in urban runoff-impacted watersheds. Regulatory and restoration efforts typically evaluate limited conventional parameters and pollutants. However, complex urban chemical mixtures contain hundreds to thousands of organic contaminants that remain unidentified, unregulated, and poorly understood. This study aimed to develop broadly representative metrics of water quality impairment corresponding to previously documented biological degradation along gradients of human impacts. Stream samples (n = 65, baseflow/rainfall conditions, 2017-2018) were collected from 15 regional watersheds (Puget Sound, WA, USA) across an urbanization gradient defined by landscape characteristics. Surface water chemical composition characterized via non-targeted high-resolution mass spectrometry (7068 detections) was highly correlated with landscape-based urbanization gradient (p < 0.01) and season (p < 0.01). Landscape-scale changes in chemical composition closely aligned with two anchors of biological decline: coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) mortality risk (p < 0.001) and loss of stream macroinvertebrate diversity and abundance (p < 0.001). We isolated and identified 32 indicators for urban runoff impacts and corresponding receiving water ecological health, including well-known anthropogenic contaminants (e.g., caffeine, organophosphates, vehicle-derived chemicals), two related environmental transformation products, and a novel (methoxymethyl)melamine compound. Outcomes support data-directed selection of next-generation water quality indicators for prioritization and evaluation of watershed management efforts intended to protect aquatic ecosystems.
Storms mobilize organophosphate esters, bisphenols, PFASs, and vehicle-derived contaminants to San Francisco Bay watersheds

Abstract:In urban to peri-urban watersheds such as those surrounding San Francisco Bay, stormwater runoff is a major pathway by which contaminants enter aquatic ecosystems. We evaluated the occurrence of 154 organic contaminants via liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry, including organophosphate esters (OPEs), bisphenols, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), and a suite of novel urban stormwater tracers (SWCECs; i.e., vehicle-derived chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals/personal care products, benzothiazoles/benzotriazoles). Time-averaged composite sampling focused on storms in highly developed watersheds over four wet seasons, with complementary sampling in less-urban reference watersheds, near-shore estuarine sites, and the open Bay. Of the targeted contaminants, 68 (21 SWCECs, 29 OPEs, 3 bisphenols, 15 PFASs) were detected in ≥10 of 26 urban stormwater samples. Median concentrations exceeded 500 ng L-1 for 1,3-diphenylguanidine, hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine, and caffeine, and exceeded 300 ng L-1 for 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole, 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole, pentachlorophenol, and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate. Median individual PFAS concentrations were <10 ng L-1, with highest concentrations for PFHxA (180 ng L-1), PFOA (110 ng L-1), and PFOS (81 ng L-1). In six of eight urban stormwater samples analyzed for 6PPD-quinone (a tire rubber-derived transformation product), concentrations exceeded coho salmon acute toxicity thresholds, suggesting (sub)lethal impacts for sensitive species. Observed concentrations were generally significantly higher in highly developed watersheds relative to reference watersheds, but not statistically different in near-shore estuarine sites, suggesting substantial transient exposure potential at stormwater outfalls or creek outflows. Results emphasized the role of stormwater in contaminant transport, the importance of vehicles/roadways as contaminant sources, and the value of monitoring broad multi-analyte contaminant suites to enable comprehensive source and toxicity evaluations.

Abstract:Stormwater runoff poses a great threat to local water quality and aquatic ecosystem in rapid urbanizing areas.Six watersheds in the city of Shenzhen were selected for study on characteristics of stormwater runoff in four rainfall events.Six indicators of water quality(CODCr,NH3-N,TN,TP,SS and BOD5) were analyzed for the characteristic of water quality and the first flush phenomenon.It could be concluded from the water quality analysis that SS,CODCr and BOD5 were relatively significant in nonpoint source pollution in this area.In watersheds with more urban land most pollutants had strong correlations with SS.Watersheds with more urban villages were likely to build-up more nonpoint pollutants due to more individual and irregular human activities(e.g.illicit connections,littering) as well as poor sewage sewers along with a rapid urbanization.The first flush effect was proportional to the percent of impervious surface and the rainfall intensity.

Abstract:Identification, quantification, and control of First-Flush (FF) are considered extremely crucial in urban stormwater management. This paper reviews the methods for FF phenomenon identification, characteristics of pollutants flushes, technologies for FF pollution control, and the relationships among these factors. It further discusses FF quantification methods and optimization of control measures, aiming to reveal directions for future studies on FF management. Results showed that statistical analyses and Runoff Pollutographs Applying Curve (RPAC) fitting modelling of wash-off processes are the most applicable FF identification methods currently available. Furthermore, deep insights into the pollutant mass flushing of roof runoff may be a critical approach to characterizing FF stormwater. Finally, a novel strategy for FF control is established comprising multi-stage objectives, coupling LID/BMPs optimization schemes and Information Feedback (IF) mechanisms, aiming towards its application for the management of urban stormwater at the watershed scale.

Abstract:Urban surface runoff contains chemicals that can negatively affect water quality. Urban runoff studies have determined the transport dynamics of many legacy pollutants. However, less attention has been paid to determining the first-flush effects (FFE) of emerging micropollutants using suspect and non-target screening (SNTS). Therefore, this study employed suspect and non-target analyses using liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry to detect emerging pollutants in urban receiving waters during stormwater events. Time-interval sampling was used to determine occurrence trends during stormwater events. Suspect screening tentatively identified 65 substances, then, their occurrence trend was grouped using correlation analysis. Non-target peaks were prioritized through hierarchical cluster analysis, focusing on the first flush-concentrated peaks. This approach revealed 38 substances using in silico identification. Simultaneously, substances identified through homologous series observation were evaluated for their observed trends in individual events using network analysis. The results of SNTS were normalized through internal standards to assess the FFE, and the most of tentatively identified substances showed observed FFE. Our findings suggested that diverse pollutants that could not be covered by target screening alone entered urban water through stormwater runoff during the first flush. This study showcases the applicability of the SNTS in evaluating the FFE of urban pollutants, offering insights for first-flush stormwater monitoring and management.

Abstract:Stormwater runoff is identified as urban nonpoint source pollution that increasingly introduces contaminants to urban water bodies and impedes sustainable development. The pollution load of runoff varies due to the interception of different land cover types during the urban hydrological process. During the rainy season (June–August) in 2018, five different underlying surfaces (green roof, parking lot, urban road, parkway, and grassland) were selected in Guangzhou to analyze the migration characteristics of stormwater runoff pollutants. The concentrations of heavy metals, such as chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg), as well as total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were collected and analyzed on different underlying surfaces with the rainfall data at the beginning of a stormwater runoff event. The results showed that PAHs, heavy metals, and TP existed mainly in the form of particles; nitrogen was mainly present as ammonia and nitrate; and the TN, TP, PAHs, and heavy metal were significantly different in the stormwater runoff on each underlying surface. The pollutant concentration in urban road runoff was the highest, accounting for 40–70% of the total pollutant concentration in the stormwater runoff, and the pollutant concentration in green roof runoff was the lowest, accounting for 10–40% of the total pollutant concentration in the runoff. An obvious effect of initial rainfall erosion was observed during stormwater runoff from urban roads and parking lots, and the scouring effect on grasslands and green roofs was mainly due to the many factors affecting the underlying surface during the middle and late stages. The rates of reduction of heavy metals were the most significant. The effect of water purification was positively correlated with stormwater runoff duration. The rates of reduction of TN, heavy metals (Cr, Cd, and Hg), and PAHs in the grassland areas were 35.20 ± 26.28, 0.24 ± 10.13, 71.77 ± 10.97,32.62 ± 110.48, and 41.30 ± 8.78%, respectively. This study could provide a theoretical basis for preventing and managing pollutants in urban stormwater runoff.

Abstract:The importance of the first flush effect(FFE) of urban storm water runoff in urban non-point pollution is described.The judgment,the quantification method,the seasonal FFE concept,and the phase state effect on FFE are reviewed comprehensively.The feature of a higher concentration of the pollutants during the initial period of storm water runoff supplied a theoretical basis and important implication for selecting economical and effective best management practices(BMPs).The proposed engineering BMPs considering the combination of the FFE and the patterns of flushed pollutants were useful approaches for optimizing resources allocation and pollution control,which can help guide the city public management sector in instituting effective policies and practices.
Flush Characteristics of Run off Pollution in a Rapidly Urbanizing Catchment

Abstract:Understanding of the flush characteristics of runoff pollution can help to develop efficient measures for pollution control. Although the runoff pollution in the urban catchments has been extensively investigated, few studies have attempted to reveal the pollution characteristics in the urbanizing catchments with mixed urban and agricultural land use. In this paper, the Shiyan River catchment, a typical rapidly urbanizing catchment in China, is chosen as a study area, and a temporary monitoring site was set at the downstream of the catchment to synchronously measure rainfall, runoff and water quality during 26 storm events from 2009 to 2012. The flush characteristics for each storm event were assessed using a dimensionless representation of cumulative loading ratio against cumulative runoff ratio. In order to analyze pollutant flushing characterizations, rainfall-runoff process is divided into three stages according to the percentage of total runoff volume, including prophase (0 similar to 33%), metaphase (33%similar to 67%) and anaphase (67%similar to 100%). The results indicated that only 34% of the storm events have "first-flush" phenomenon, in which more than 1/3 of the pollutant loads were washed off during prophase; while more than 96% of the storm events have "middle flush" phenomenon, in which pollutant loads were mostly washed off during the metaphase stages. The relationship analysis between flush characteristics and rainfall characteristics of the storm event indicated that "middle flush" phenomenon usually occurred in the storm events with a total rainfall below a threshold value. The reason for middle flush can be explained by the mixed urban and agricultural land use in the catchment. In addition, a novel pollutant wash off model was developed to simulate the flush process of runoff pollution in the catchment. The result indicated the model can fit well with the middle flush phenomenon. The findings in this study provide support in decision making of runoff pollution control in the rapidly urbanizing areas.

Abstract:Urban storm runoff is a major source of pollutants in receiving water bodies. To assess the impact of urban stormwater runoff on an urban river, the runoff process of total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium (NH4), and total phosphorus (TP) were investigated on road surfaces classified as arterial road (AR), residential area (RA), and industrial area (IA) in the Pingshan River (PSR) watershed in Shenzhen, China. Event mean concentration (EMC) was calculated to analyze the water quality of road runoff, and the dimensionless M(V) cumulative curves were used to estimate the course of decreasing concentration of runoff pollutants during each rainfall event. Multicriteria decision making methods (PROMETHEE-GAIA) were used to identify the linkage between runoff pollutants, land use types, and rainfall intensity. The EMCs of COD and TP in runoff exceeded the class IV level of the water quality standard for surface water (China). RA was a major potential source for NH4, COD, and TP in the river. Controlling the first flush is critical to decrease the effect of road runoff on receiving water bodies, as most runoff pollutants in AR, RA, and IA had a first flush effect during heavy rainfall. The specific management measure for runoff pollution varied with land use type. Reducing road TSS concentrations was effective for controlling runoff pollution in AR and RA because NH4, TP, and COD attached to particulate matter. In IA, the collection and reuse of stormwater in the initial rainfall period were effective for reducing the effect of soluble pollutants in runoff on receiving water bodies. This study provides new information for managing urban road stormwater runoff in different land use types.

Abstract:Surface water quality is negatively influenced by the urbanization process to pollutant loads in stormwater runoff and increases in runoff peaks and volumes. The first flush effect is the main impetus for pollutants transportations. This study compared the characteristics of first flush effect on stormwater runoff from blacktop driveway, concrete roof, and roof with grassland. The first flush effects of chemical oxygen demand (COD), Ammonium-Nitrogen (NH3-N), Nitrate-Nitrogen (NO3-N) and Total Phosphorous (TP) were studied through monitoring of rainfall runoff on three different kinds of underlying surface, including bituminous roof, green roof and asphalt road. And four linear relationships for these pollutants were stimulated. The results demonstrated that the first flush effects of these four pollutants on three different kinds of underlying surface presented significantly. Over 80% of pollution load was delivered within the first 40% of the whole runoff period. Thus, retaining the initial runoff could effectively reduce runoff pollution. The linear relationships of four pollutants were presented significantly as well. Most of the correlation coefficients were more than 0.9, which showed that controlling pollution source could significantly diminish pollutants for the similarity of these four pollutants.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is identification and characterization of hydrological process of urban runoff, as well as concentration variation of pollutants in it. Samples were collected in 4 rainfall events in Beijing from Jun. 2006 to Aug. 2006. Hydrology and pollution of the rainfall-runoff process were analyzed on roof and road. Study results show that the shapes of hydrological curves of runoff, despite for a 5 - 20 min delay and a milder tendency, are similar to rainfall curves. Runoff coefficients of roof are 0.80 - 0.98, while 0.87 - 0.97 of road. Event mean concentrations (EMC) of pollutants are influenced by build-up and wash-off features, which leads to a higher concentration in road runoff than in roof runoff. Major pollutants that excess the water quality standards are COD, TN, and TP. Evident correlations (> 0.1) are found between pollutants. Correlation with particles are higher for COD and SO4(2-) (> 0.5), while lower for nutrients (<0.5). First flush effects (FFE) are found and affected by several factors, such as pollutant variety, types of land covers, and rainfall intensity. FFE are found more intense in SS, more frequently in road runoff, and more difficult to form for COD and nutrients with low rainfall intensity. Therefore, control of first period of runoff would be an effective approach for runoff management in Beijing.
Spatial variations of storm runoff pollution and their correlation with land-use in a rapidly urbanizing catchment in China.

Abstract:The composition of land use for a rapidly urbanizing catchment is usually heterogeneous, and this may result in significant spatial variations of storm runoff pollution and increase the difficulties of water quality management. The Shiyan Reservoir catchment, a typical rapidly urbanizing area in China, is chosen as a study area, and temporary monitoring sites were set at the downstream of its 6 sub-catchments to synchronously measure rainfall, runoff and water quality during 4 storm events in 2007 and 2009. Due to relatively low frequency monitoring, the IHACRES and exponential pollutant wash-off simulation models are used to interpolate the measured data to compensate for data insufficiency. Three indicators, event pollutant loads per unit area (EPL), event mean concentration (EMC) and pollutant loads transported by the first 50% of runoff volume (FF50), were used to describe the runoff pollution for different pollutants in each sub-catchment during the storm events, and the correlations between runoff pollution spatial variations and land-use patterns were tested by Spearman's rank correlation analysis. The results indicated that similar spatial variation trends were found for different pollutants (EPL or EMC) in light storm events, which strongly correlate with the proportion of residential land use; however, they have different trends in heavy storm events, which correlate with not only the residential land use, but also agricultural and bare land use. And some pairs of pollutants (such as COD/BOD, NH3-N/TN) might have the similar source because they have strong or moderate positive spatial correlation. Moreover, the first flush intensity (FF50) varies with impervious land areas and different interception ratio of initial storm runoff volume should be adopted in different sub-catchments.
RUNOFF POLLUTANT CHARACTERISTICS AND FIRST FLUSH ANALYSIS IN DIFFERENT URBAN FUNCTIONAL AREAS: A CASE STUDY IN CHINA

Abstract:From 2013 to 2014, three different urban functional areas, commercial and industrial area C-1, residential area C-2 and landscape area C-3, in Guang-Ming New District of Shenzhen, China, were selected as the study area. Runoff quantity and concentrations of six pollutants of 32 rainfall runoff events were monitored. Event Mean Concentrations (EMCs), Mass First Flush (MFFn), first flush strength and probabilities of the six pollutants were analyzed. Correlation between EMCs and rainfall characteristics and first flush control volume for three different catchments were discussed. Results showed that the mean EMCs for SS, COD and TP in catchment C-1 were 2.4, 3.4 and 2.5 times than that in catchment C-2, 3.2; 3.1 and 1.3 times than that in catchment C-3. The catchment C-2 was recorded the highest mean EMC for TN. About 70 similar to 80% of rainfall events can exhibit first flush phenomenon, but no strong flush (30/80) in the study area. Based on the probability of first flush from high to low, the sequence of three catchments was C-1 > C-2 > C-3. The catchment C-2 recorded the highest first flush strength and then was followed by the catchment C-1 and C-3. The sequence of pollutants based on first flush strength from high to low was SS > COD > TP > TN. In order to control runoff pollutants, 7 mm for catchment C-1 and C-2, 8 mm for catchment C-3 were suggested as first flush control volume.
Assessment of stormwater discharge contamination and toxicity for a cold-climate urban landscape

Abstract:Background Stormwater is water resulting from precipitation events and snowmelt running off the urban landscape, collecting in storm sewers, and typically being released into receiving water bodies through outfalls with minimal to no treatment. Despite a growing body of evidence observing its deleterious pollution impacts, stormwater management and treatment in cold climates remains limited, partly due to a lack of quality and loading data and modeling parameters. This study examines the quality of stormwater discharging during the summer season in a cold-climate, semi-arid Canadian city (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Results Seven stormwater outfalls with mixed-land-use urban catchments > 100 km 2 were sampled for four summer (June–August 2019) storm events and analyzed for a suite of quality parameters, including total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), metals, and targeted polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In addition, assessment of stormwater toxicity was done using the two toxicity assays Raphidocelis subcapitata (algae) and Vibrio fischeri (bacteria). Notable single-event, single-outfall contaminant pulses included of arsenic (420 μg/L), cadmium (16.4 μg/L), zinc (924 μg/L), fluorene (4.95 μg/L), benzo[a]pyrene (0.949 μg/L), pyrene (0.934 μg/L), phenanthrene (1.39 μg/L), and anthracene (1.40 μg/L). The IC 50 in both R. subcapitata and V. fischeri was observed, if at all, above expected toxicity thresholds for individual contaminant species. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed no clear trends for individual sampling sites or sampling dates. In contrast, parameters were correlated with each other in groups including DOC, COD, TSS, and reduced algal toxicity; and total dissolved solids (TDS), sum of metals, and pH. Conclusions In general, stormwater characteristics were similar to those of previous studies, with a bulk of contamination carried by the first volume of runoff, influenced by a combination of rainfall depth, antecedent dry period, land use, and activity within the catchment. Roads, highways, and industrial areas contribute the bulk of estimated contaminant loadings. More intensive sampling strategies are necessary to contextualize stormwater data in the context of contaminant and runoff volume peaks.

Abstract:Water quality data at 12 sites within an urban, a suburban, and a rural stream were collected contemporaneously during four wet and eight dry periods. The urban stream yielded the highest biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), orthophosphate, total suspended sediment (TSS), and surfactant concentrations, while the most rural stream yielded the highest total organic carbon concentrations. Percent watershed development and percent impervious surface coverage were strongly correlated with BOD (biochemical oxygen demand), orthophosphate, and surfactant concentrations but negatively with total organic carbon. Excessive fecal coliform abundance most frequently occurred in the most urbanized catchments. Fecal coliform bacteria, TSS, turbidity, orthophosphate, total phosphorus, and BOD were significantly higher during rain events compared to nonrain periods. Total rainfall preceding sampling was positively correlated with turbidity, TSS, BOD, total phosphorus, and fecal coliform bacteria concentrations. Turbidity and TSS were positively correlated with phosphorus, fecal coliform bacteria, BOD, and chlorophyll a, which argues for better sedimentation controls under all landscape types.

Abstract:Abstract To study the first flush effect of nonpoint source pollution in the Guangzhou community unit, runoff from roads, roofs, and green spaces during three rainfall events was collected and analyzed for pollutants. Nine runoff pollution indices were considered. The dimensionless cumulative curve of pollutant mass vs. volume, the first flush coefficient ( b ) and the mass first flush ratio (MFF n ) were used to assess the first flush effect of different underlying surfaces. The assessment results pointed out that the roof was most prone to first flush effect. And ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus were the main pollutants in the first flush in the study area. For a quantitative analysis of the first flush, the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was used to simulate the hydrological effect of low impact development (LID) implementation in the community. The results showed that the first flush strength was reduced after setting LID. And LID measures, such as green roofs and sunken green spaces, contribute to flood control and rainwater purification. This research can be relevant regarding for constructing sponge cities and reducing the pollution caused by the first flush.

Abstract:Coho salmon ( Oncorhynchus kisutch ) are highly sensitive to 6PPD-Quinone (6PPD-Q). Details of the hydrological and biogeochemical processes controlling spatial and temporal dynamics of 6PPD-Q fate and transport from points of deposition to receiving waters (e.g., streams, estuaries) are poorly understood. To understand the fate and transport of 6PPD and mechanisms leading to salmon mortality Visualizing Ecosystem Land Management Assessments (VELMA), an ecohydrological model developed by US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), was enhanced to better understand and inform stormwater management planning by municipal, state, and federal partners seeking to reduce stormwater contaminant loads in urban streams draining to the Puget Sound National Estuary. This work focuses on the 5.5 km2 Longfellow Creek upper watershed (Seattle, Washington, United States), which has long exhibited high rates of acute urban runoff mortality syndrome in coho salmon. We present VELMA model results to elucidate these processes for the Longfellow Creek watershed across multiple scales–from 5-m grid cells to the entire watershed. Our results highlight hydrological and biogeochemical controls on 6PPD-Q flow paths, and hotspots within the watershed and its stormwater infrastructure, that ultimately impact contaminant transport to Longfellow Creek and Puget Sound. Simulated daily average 6PPD-Q and available observed 6PPD-Q peak in-stream grab sample concentrations (ng/L) corresponds within plus or minus 10 ng/L. Most importantly, VELMA's high-resolution spatial and temporal analysis of 6PPD-Q hotspots provides a tool for prioritizing the locations, amounts, and types of green infrastructure that can most effectively reduce 6PPD-Q stream concentrations to levels protective of coho salmon and other aquatic species.

Abstract:In recent years, the pollution of receiving water induced by urban stormwater runoff has gained considerable attention. Meanwhile, rainwater is also a potential and valuable water resource, which may effectively mitigate the increasing water shortage. In the present study, the distributions and transport of nutrients and heavy metals in different stormwater runoff of two residential communities (site A and B) under the effect of drainage systems were discussed in detail. Site A with combined drainage system was located in old district featured with a lot of big manufacturing and chemical factories in suburb. Differently, site B with separate system was situated in new district occupied by small shops and residential quarters. The results indicated that air quality was a significant influence factor and reference index in the decision-making of rainwater harvesting and reuse. For nutrients, the anthropic activities contributed adequately ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus to the road runoff (RD) and sewer overflows, especially in site A with combined drainage system. However, the roof runoff (RF) presented the highest event mean concentrations (EMC) of nitrate and nitrite nitrogen, probably due to the high runoff coefficient of roof and low interference from human activities on dry deposition. Zn(II), Cu(II), and Pb(II) concentrations showed a similar variation pattern, although there were some small differences owing to the erosion of metal materials from rooftops and street lamps. Compared with the Standards for Drinking Water Quality in China, the direct rainfall and RF in site B could be harvested and utilized for potential drinking water supply from the perspective of the studied parameters. For site A, at least 33.8% of NH4+-N and 50.8% of NO3--N in RF must be removed before reuse. The results obtained in this research would provide an important assistance and support in urban rainwater reuse as well as runoff pollution control.
Urban stormwater discharge contributes more micropollutants to surface water in humid regions of China: Comparison with treated wastewater

Abstract:Micropollutants have raised increasing concern due to their adverse effect on ecosystems and human health. So far, the effects of micropollutants in urban stormwater discharge on surface water quality or ecosystem health remains unclear. In this study, target and non-target screening methods were used to quantify and identify micropollutants in urban stormwater, wastewater, and surface water in humid regions of China. Results showed that the average concentration of micropollutants in surface waters in wet weather was 1.8 times that in dry weather. The cumulative concentrations of 143 micropollutants in samples from stormwater discharge were in the range of 490–1659 ng/L, which were comparable to or exceeded those from wastewater discharge. In terms of mass load in the studying area, stormwater discharges contained 10.8 kg of micropollutants in the month, a higher level compared to 4.58 kg in treated wastewater. Furthermore, the calculated risk quotients revealed medium to high ecological risk to aquatic organisms from substances such as telmisartan, irbesartan, 1,7-dimethylxanthine, and caffeine at ng/L concentrations, which are in typical levels in urban stormwater and surface waters in wet weathers. Our study reveals that urban stormwater discharge is an important pathway for micropollutants to surface waters, and urges for increased emphasis on, and reinforcement of, urban stormwater monitoring and control measures to minimize the transport of micropollutants to receiving waterbodies.
