Abstract:BACKGROUND:The potential health risks of infant formula feeding are well established. This study investigated the opinions and perceptions of mothers and recommendations by hospital staff with respect to infant formula usage in China.METHODS:A cross-sectional survey of 726 mothers within 6 months postpartum and 241 hospital staff, using structured questionnaires, was conducted in Hangzhou and Shenzhen, China.RESULTS:Overall, 474 of 726 (65.3%) infants aged within 6 months had consumed some infant formula. About 40.0 percent of mothers chose a hybrid brand of formula (manufactured in China but owned by a foreign company), over imported (< 32.0%) and domestic brands (< 28.0%), despite their higher level of confidence on the quality of imported brands. Perceived insufficient breastmilk production (86.2%) was the most common reason for giving infant formula, followed by return to work (24.6%). Of the 241 hospital staff, 97 (40.2%) gave no recommendation about infant formula brand for infants at any age. However, 47.2 percent of the remaining staff recommended a hybrid brand in combination with an imported and/or a domestic product.CONCLUSIONS:Perceptions by mothers and recommendations from hospital staff appear to contribute to the widespread usage of infant formula in China. It is important to ensure breastmilk substitutes are prescribed to Chinese infants strictly for medical reasons. Maternal education programs incorporating information on food safety issues and establishment of breastfeeding-friendly workplaces could curtail the common practice of formula feeding in China.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the occurrence of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in total mixed rations (TMR) and aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) in raw and commercial milk in northern China during winter season. A total of 22 feed samples, as well as the corresponding 84 raw milk and 69 commercial milk samples were randomly collected from north-west, northeast and north areas of China from November 2019 to January 2020. High performance liquid chromatography and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay method were applied to detect AFB1 and AFM1. All samples presented AFB1 (30?370 ng/L) and AFM1 (10?430 ng/L) levels under the legal limit of China for raw milk (10 ?g/L) and commercial milk (500 ng/L). While 31.8% of TMRs and 34.5% of raw milk samples exceeded the European Union (EU) legal limit for AFM1 in raw milk (5 ?g/L) and commercial milk (50 ng/L). Compared with the samples from northeast and north areas of China with the similar AFB1 concentration, samples from northwest area of China exhibited higher AFM1 level (mean = 130 ng/L), thus presenting a higher transfer ratio from AFB1 to AFM1. A Linear relationship was observed between AFB1 in TMRs and AFM1 in raw milk. In conclusion, all samples from northern China presented AFB1 and AFM1 levels under Chinese legal limit and only about 30% of the tested samples exceeded the EU legal limit. However, the aflatoxin contamination in northwest area of China should be paid more attention to due to the high AFM1 levels and high variance in milk samples.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of aflatoxin M-1 (AFM(1)) in Chinese liquid milk products. A total of 190 liquid milk samples, including 168 ultrahigh-temperature-treated milk samples and 22 pasteurized milk (PM) samples, were collected in August 2019. A screening assay with the Charm rapid test kit and a confirmation method with high-performance liquid chromatography were used for AFM(1) analysis. Nine (4.74%) samples were screened positive, of which 5 (2.11%) samples were confirmed with concentration levels of 0.022 to 0.049 mu g/kg. The AFM(1) levels confirmed were all below the maximum residue levels set by China, the European Union, the United States, and the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The detection rate of AFM(1) in domestic milk samples was 3.39%, while no AFM(1) was detected in samples of imported milk. The prevalences of AFM(1) detected in three groups of brands were as follows: group I, the major brands of China. 2.70%; group II, the local city domestic brands, 4.55%; and group III, the brands imported into China, 0. The detection rate of AFM(1) was significantly higher in PM samples (9.09%) than in ultrahigh-temperature-treated samples (1.19%) (P < 0.05). Although the residue level of AFM(1) did not exceed the maximum residue levels in any of the samples, the higher detection rate in local Chinese brands, especially in PM samples, deserves the attention of the Chinese government and consumers.

Abstract:Lactational changes in macronutrient content, lipid profile, fatty acid composition, and positional distribution of human breast milk were investigated in this study. A total of 378 milk samples of six different lactation periods, including 0-5, 6-14, 15-30, 31-90, 91-180, and 181-360 days, were collected cross-sectionally from healthy lactating women in Zhejiang, China. As lactation progressed from 0-5 to 15-30 days, the lipid content and the percentages of C10:0, C12:0, C14:0, C18:2n-6, and C18:3n-3 increased significantly, while the protein concentration and the proportions of phospholipids, cholesterols, C16:0, C18:1n-9, C24:1n-9, C20:4n-6, C22:4n-6, C22:5n-3, and C22:6n-3 decreased notably. When lactation was further extended to 181-360 days, the protein content continued to decrease, and the percentages of C12:0 and C14:0 continued to increase, whereas the levels of other tested nutrients remained stable. Although the triacylglycerol positional distributions of some fatty acids underwent significant lactational variations, C14:0, C16:0, C24:1n-9, C22:4n-6, C22:5n-3, and C22:6n-3 were located mainly at the sn-2 position, while C18:1n-9, C18:2n-6, and C18:3n-3 were primarily distributed at the sn-1,3 positions. Compared with human breast milk reported in Western countries, samples in our study demonstrated higher percentages of C18:2n-6, C18:3n-3, C20:4n-6, and C22:6n-3, but lower proportions of C12:0, C14:0, and C18:1n-9. The results from this study indicated a nutritional composition different from that of the Western countries and may provide useful data for the development of infant formulas closer to Chinese breast milk in terms of the fatty acid composition and its specified positional distribution on triglyceride structure.

Abstract:Objective To understand hygienic condition of production enterprises of infant formula by investigation.Method The spot inspection,questionnaire and interview were used to investigate production enterprises of infant formula according to the questionnaire of production enterprise of infant formula powder made by national center for health inspection and supervision.Results The designs and facilities of 15 production enterprises of infant formula met requirements,and individual item of some enterprises did not reach standard.6 enterprises used clean rooms of class 300 thousand,but 9 enterprises did not design weighing room.The condition of hygienic administration and quality administration in 15 enterprises met requirements,and such enterprises all had laboratories.The group was responsible for whole items of enterprise.14 enterprises owned testing laboratories for fresh milk of raw material,and only 1 small-scale enterprise did not separate physical and chemical experiment and microbiological experiment.15 enterprises could test acidity in raw milk,and 5 enterprises could test gemma,and 4 enterprises could test antibiotics.Conclusion The production enterprises of infant formula in Hebei province could basically meet requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice for Dairy Product Factory.
Contribution of packaging materials to MOSH and POSH contamination of milk powder products during storage

Abstract:<span>Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) in milk powders, particularly in infant formulas, have been and continue to be a major concern to the public worldwide. These contaminants are likely derived from environmental pollution, manufacturing process and packaging materials. In this study, 23 Chinese commercial milk powder products packaged in four types of materials, i.e. metal cans, paper containers, paperboard boxes with internal bags, and aluminium foil-plastic bags, were collected and stored for 1 year. The total and surface MOH in these samples were detected and compared before and after storage to understand the MOH migration during storage, despite no mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOAH) were detected. The contents of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and polyolefin oligomeric saturated hydrocarbons (POSH) in metal cans were the least among the four packages and changed little during storage, which suggested that little MOH migration occurred in metal material. Despite all the food contact materials in the other three packagings were the aluminium foil-plastic composite, the similar low migration occurred in the aluminium foil-plastic bags and internally contained composite bag(s) in paperboard boxes. However, both total and surface MOSH and POSH easily migrated from the paper-plastic-aluminium composite of paper containers during storage. These findings are helpful for the selection of packaging materials in manufacturing milk powder products or other foods.<b>Graphical </b></span>

Abstract:Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are dioxin-like compounds that have been reported to be present in a wide variety of foodstuffs. Milk-based infant and toddler formula sometimes plays an important role in the diet of young children and could potentially cause adverse effects if contaminated with PCNs. This study investigated the concentrations of PCNs in commercial milk-based formula produced in different countries and sold on the Chinese market for three age groups: 0–6, 6–12 and 12–36 months. The total concentrations of PCNs in 72 samples from different countries of formula based on cow milk ranged from 7.8 to 30.3 pg/g whole weight (ww). Although the PCN concentrations in formula produced in Asia, Europe and South Pacific varied, all had comparable toxic equivalent (TEQ) values. Tri-CNs were the predominant PCN homologue in all samples. No significant differences in the concentrations of PCNs were found between samples of formula for each of the three age groups. The mean TEQ for PCNs in goat milk formula samples (0.0031 pg TEQ/g ww) was higher than the value for cow milk formula (0.0009 pg TEQ/g ww) produced in China, and the proportion of higher chlorinated PCNs in goat milk formula was also higher. Based on dry weight, the mean concentration of PCNs in the raw cow milk (119 pg/g dry weight (dw)) used to produce infant and toddler formula was higher than that in the actual formula (24.2 pg/g dw), and the PCN profiles also varied between the raw milk and formula. A risk assessment indicated that, in China, consuming formula poses a lower risk to infants and toddlers from based on exposure to PCNs compared with consuming breast milk.

The fatty acid profiles in infant formulas were determined and analyzed by gas chromatography(GC). The difference of fatty acid between the formulas showed domestic infant formulas have more kinds of fatty acids than those of imported. Whereas various fatty acids in imported infant milk are detected mostly higher than in domestic infant milk. And all the products involved in the research meet the national standards of China.

Abstract:Omega-3 fatty acid dietary supplements have become increasingly popular with consumers due to their multiple health benefits. In this study, the presence of mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) was investigated in seventeen commercial samples of such supplements, characterized by different formulations. The analyses were performed using on-line liquid chromatography–gas chromatography (with flame ionization detection), which is considered the most efficient method for the determination of MOH in foodstuffs. Analyte transfer was performed by using the retention gap technique, with partially concurrent solvent evaporation. Various degrees of mineral oil saturated hydrocarbon contamination (from 2.4 ppm to 375.7 ppm) were found, with an average value of 49.9 ppm. Different C-number range contaminations were determined, with the >C25–≤C35 range always found with an average value of 26.9 ppm. All samples resulted free of mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons, except for two samples in which a contamination was found at the 9.9 and 6.6 ppm levels, respectively.

Abstract:Objective To describe the content of nutrients and three environmental contaminants for "overseas online shopping" infant formulas. Methods 18 kinds of "overseas online shopping" infant formula and 14 kinds of domestically purchased infant formula were collected, and their nutritional composition and 3 environmental chemicals were analyzed and compared. Results Four kinds of "overseas online shopping" infant formula did not meet the GB 10765-2010, and the nutrient contents of "overseas online shopping" infant formulas were significantly different from those domestic purchased (P<0.05). The 5 main different indictors were energy (68.09, 66.77 kcal/100 mL), protein (2.00, 2.32 g/100 kcal), fat (5.51, 5.15 g/100 kcal), pantothenic acid (676.33, 910.84 μg/100 kcal), and iodin (20.60, 17.41 μg/100 kcal). Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), bisphenol A (BPA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were not detected in any infant formula. Conclusion "Overseas online shopping" infant formulas did not completely meet the GB 10765-2010, further studies were needed to investigate the adaption of "overseas online shopping" infant formula to China's infants.

Abstract:3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol esters (3-MCPDEs) and glycidyl esters (GEs) are food contaminants and have arisen continuous attention due to their toxicity, especially towards infants. Current risk assessment of these contaminants was mostly employing deterministic approaches, lacking quantitative characterization of the likelihood, incidence, or severity of the risks involved. Herein, 3-MCPDE and GE levels in 46 representative infant formulas (IFs) from Chinese market were determined by GC-MS/MS. Then, combining the occurrence data and consumption data from China National Food Consumption Survey, the Monte Carlo simulation-based probabilistic model for risk assessment of 3-MCPDEs and GEs in IFs from Chinese market was established. The results showed that all P90 (90th percentiles) hazard quotient values were below 1, demonstrating 3-MCPDEs didn't pose health risks to most populations aged 0–36 months old. However, for 0–12 months old groups, P10 (10th percentiles) margin of exposure values were all below 25000, indicating GEs may pose potential risks to 10% of this group. Uncertainty analysis revealed that the probabilistic model had considered uncertainties of model input and distribution, and realized refined assessment. This study is the first report on probabilistic assessment of 3-MCPDEs and GEs in IFs, which also provided references for the formulation of related regulatory limits in China.

Abstract:Dietary exposure is an important pathway for many pollutants from external exposure to human beings. In this study, we investigated the exposure to short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs), which are a class of industrial compounds that are of significant concern, in different infant foods (cow infant formula, goat infant formula and baby food are collectively called infant food in this study) in Chinese market. The concentrations of ∑SCCPs, ∑MCCPs and ∑LCCPs in infant foods were in the ranges of 6.22–273 ng/g, 13.1–2020 ng/g and 0.80–1280 ng/g, respectively. Especially, for the first time, we found that the proportion of ∑LCCPs (22.0%) in goat infant formula is almost equivalent to that of ∑SCCPs (25.0%), implying that LCCPs should also be further concerned since the related information is very scarce. There were differences between CP profiles among imported cow infant formula and Chinese cow infant formula due to the different sources of CPs to the infant formula. Imported infant foods were characterized by higher proportion of SCCPs, while Chinese infant foods were characterized by higher proportion on LCCPs. Margin of exposure results demonstrated that there was no significant health concern for the infant, but that large variation of CP concentrations and excessive feeding in practice may cause potential health threats to the infant. LCCPs were detected in all infant food samples, and to our knowledge, this is the first report of LCCPs in cow infant formula, goat infant formula and baby food. This study could provide important data of infant exposure to CPs, especially, LCCPs.

Abstract:A novel manufacturing technology to produce infinitely long and cost-effective MgB2 superconductive wires has been developed. The process consists of powder purification in a controlled atmosphere and unique powder feeding technology allowing micrometer-sized Mg and Cu powders and nano-sized B and dopant powders to be fed continuously to a “U”-shaped stainless steel and bimetallic sheath material. Laser seam welding technology has been applied to seal the conductor seam, allowing continuous wire production. Deformation characteristics of wires produced by single and bimetallic sheath materials have been studied. The Ic(B,T) characteristic of initial products has been investigated in a dedicated helium force vapor cooling system. It is demonstrated that the proposed technology guarantees the possibility of the virtually unlimited length of the conductor and potentially greater processing control, ensuring a quality superconductor for large-scale applications.
Changes in fatty acid composition of human milk over lactation stages and relationship with dietary intake in Chinese women.

Abstract:Breast milk samples and 24-hour food records were obtained from lactating mothers on day 1 (colostrum), day 14 (transitional milk) and day 42 (mature milk) from Hangzhou (n = 202), Lanzhou (n = 133) and Beijing (n = 142), China. Fatty acid methyl esters were prepared by standard methods, separated and quantified by gas chromatography. We aimed to investigate the fatty acid composition (% of total fatty acid) in human milk of three lactating stages from three regions in China and the relationship with maternal dietary intake during lactation. Present results showed that the fatty acid composition of breast milk varied with lactating period and geographical regions in China. In all the milk samples, the total saturated fatty acid (SFA) remained stable. However, C10:0 and C12:0 increased over the lactation period, total monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) significantly increased from colostrum (34.50%) to transitional milk (37.06%), and total polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) showed its highest percentage in colostrum (29.58%). In particular, C22: 6n-3 and C22:5n-3 were lowest in mature milk (0.38% and 0.41%, respectively), and C18:3n-3 (1.83%) was lowest in colostrum. There were significant differences among the three regions in total MUFA and PUFA in breast milk. The Hangzhou samples had the lowest C18:1n-9 and highest C22:6n-3. Additionally, C22:6n-3, total PUFA and n-3 PUFA were lowest in the Lanzhou samples. Different dietary habits were largely the drivers behind the different fatty acid profiles among the three regions.
Temporal Change of the Content of 10 Oligosaccharides in the Milk of Chinese Urban Mothers

Abstract:Breastfed infants tend to be less prone to infections and may have improved cognitive benefits compared to formula-fed infants. Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) are the third most abundant component of human milk, but are absent from formulae. They may be partially responsible for the benefits of breastfeeding. In this cross-sectional observational study, the HMO composition of milk from Chinese mothers was studied to determine the impact of stage of lactation, mode of delivery and geographical location. The content of 10 HMO was measured by HPLC in 446 milk samples from mothers living in three different cities in China. Around 21% of the samples contained levels of 2′-fucosyllactose (2′-FL) below the limit of quantification, which is similar to the frequency of fucosyltransferase-2 non-secretors in other populations, but 2′-FL was detected in all samples. Levels of most of the HMO studied decreased during the course of lactation, but the level of 3-fucosyllactose increased. Levels of 2′-FL and 3-fucosyllactose seem to be strongly correlated, suggesting some sort of mechanism for co-regulation. Levels of 6′-sialyllactose were higher than those of 3′-sialyllactose at early stages of lactation, but beyond 2–4 months, 3′-sialyllactose was predominant. Neither mode of delivery nor geographical location had any impact on HMO composition.
Quantitation of bioactive components in infant formulas: Milk oligosaccharides, sialic acids and corticosteroids

Abstract:Human milk is considered the optimal food for infants with abundant nutrients and bioactive components, which play key roles in infant health and development. Infant formulas represent appropriate substitutes for human milk. There are many brands of infant formula with different ingredient sources and functions on the market. The present study aims to quantify important bioactive components, i.e., milk oligosaccharides (MOS), sialic acids (Sia) and corticosteroids, in different infant formulas and compare these to human milk. In total, 12 different infant formulas available on the Dutch market were analyzed in this study. The concentrations of MOS and Sia were characterized by UHPLC-FLD and LC-MS, while corticosteroids were determined using established UHPLC-MS/MS methods. Among infant formulas, 15 structures of oligosaccharides were identified, of which 2'-Fucosyllactose (2'FL), 3'-Galactosyllactose (3'GL) and 6'-Galactosyllactose (6́'GL) were found in all infant formulas. The oligosaccharide concentrations differed between milk source and brands and were 3-5 times lower than in human milk. All infant formulas contained Sia, N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) was dominant in bovine milk-based formulas, while N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) was major in goat milk-based formula. All infant formulas contained corticosteroids, yet, at lower concentrations than human milk. Insight in concentrations of bioactive components in infant formula compared to human milk may give direction to dietary advices and/or novel formula design.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to comprehensively evaluate the changes in the metabolite profile of breast milk over lactation stages and their relationship with dietary intake in Chinese women by HPLC-QTOFMS based metabolomic analysis. The colostrum, transitional milk and mature milk of thirty healthy lactating women were collected for analysis. Eighty-four differential metabolites over lactation stages were identified, including 12 fatty acyls, 15 glycerolipids, 23 glycerophospholipids, 7 sphingolipids, 7 vitamins, 5 nucleotides-related metabolites, 2 amino acids, 1 amino acid derivate, 9 dipeptides, 1 steroid hormone, 1 energy-related metabolite and 1 amine. Partial least-squares regression analysis indicated that the metabolite profiles of the colostrum, transitional milk and mature milk have a strong relationship with dietary intake (R-2 values were 0.92, 0.87 and 0.74, respectively). However, among the 84 differential metabolites over lactation stages, only two showed a strong relationship with dietary intake: 1,24,25-(OH)(3) vitamin D-3 was positively correlated with the dietary intake of meat and eggs, protein and fat; 11-hydroxyprogesterone was negatively correlated with the dietary intake of fruit and carbohydrate. After adjusting for dietary intake, the variation trend of all the 84 differential metabolites over lactation stages remained unchanged. In conclusion, 84 differential metabolites in the breast milk of Chinese women over lactation stages were identified, and their variation trend was independent of dietary intake. These metabolites were partially different from those identified in previous metabolomic studies in the Western population. The present study is quite meaningful for understanding the variation of nutritional requirements in Chinese infants at different developmental stages and manufacturing optimal infant formulas for them.
Origin verification of imported infant formula and fresh milk into China using stable isotope and elemental chemometrics

Abstract:China is the largest importer of infant formula. However, monitoring the authenticity of infant formula has long been a problem in China. The origin of infant formula is more difficult to trace than fresh milk because it contains many foreign additives that cannot be correlated to a specific country. In this study, stable isotope ratios (δ15N, δ13C, δ34S, δ2H and δ18O) of bulk infant formula milk powder and fresh milk from 6 origins (Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Denmark, New Zealand and China) were compared to establish geographical origin isotopic characteristics. N, C and S elemental contents were also investigated to improve origin verification. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) were used to establish origin verification models of imported infant formula and fresh milk. Overall, results showed that infant formula had higher δ18O, δ2H, δ15N and δ34S values, and lower δ13C values than fresh milk. δ18O and δ2H values of infant formula varied more than in fresh milk, as the additives are not necessarily sourced from the same country, while δ15N, δ13C and δ34S values were more negative, most likely due to the presence of numerous additives probably from non-dairy sources such as fats, sugars, amino acids and proteins. This study showed a combination of isotopes and elemental contents could completely discriminate the origin of infant formula imported into China, with a discrimination accuracy of 100% using ANN.
