Abstract:The Deep South is the epicenter of the HIV-epidemic in the United States, with rural AAs bearing the greatest burden. Traditional efforts to improve testing efforts have been largely unsuccessful due to their failure to recognize and leverage the sociopolitical and cultural factors that affect the uptake of HIV-screening interventions at the community level. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the socio-cultural contexts impacting HIV-testing in the rural South, and to assess strategies to increase testing in rural, Southern communities. Focus groups (n = 8) and semi-structured interviews (n = 31) were conducted among community and faith-based leaders in Alabama and Mississippi, to inform our understanding of local perceptions of HIV infection, barriers and facilitators impacting HIV-testing, and best strategies for improving testing efforts at the local level. Interviews and focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed to extract major themes. While both faith-based and community leaders reported at least some stigmatizing attitudes towards HIV infection, faith-based leaders were more likely to report discomfort being around someone with HIV and were more likely to link the spread of HIV to immoral behaviors. The combination of the cultural importance of the Church, deep-seated religiosity among community members, and faith-based messages associating HIV infection with immorality directly impacted HIV stigma within the community-in turn, decreasing willingness to participate in HIV-testing, disclose positive HIV serostatus, or openly discuss transmission protection behaviors. The Church was identified as crucial to include to improve HIV-testing efforts in the rural South, due to their prominent sociopolitical roles within communities and ability to influence community members' perceptions of HIV stigma. Faith-based leaderships should be included in initiatives to increase improve HIV-testing and awareness of status and reduce HIV disparities in the Deep South.

Abstract:International Journal of STD &AIDS, Ahead of Print. BackgroundConsidering the need to increase HIV testing among racial minority youth in the southern United States, we conducted an exploratory study in Alabama to elucidate recommendations on improving testing rates among Black young men who have sex with men (BYMSM).MethodsWe conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with BYMSM and prevention and outreach workers. Data collection occurred online and in person between 2020–2022.ResultsOur sample included data from n = 56 BYMSM and n = 12 prevention and outreach workers. BYMSMs' mean age = 24 years. Among prevention and outreach workers, 58% identified as male with mean age = 39 years; 83% identified as Black. Transcripts were coded thematically; five concurrent themes emerged from both BYMSM and prevention and outreach workers: promoting testing at younger ages, need for visibility and outreach, connecting through shared experiences, value of nonjudgmental approaches, and need to increase HIV knowledge in BYMSM.ConclusionsFindings suggest that cultivating trust is salient to promoting HIV testing in BYMSM. To end the epidemic in the southern United States, a region that is heavily rural with high rates of HIV, it may be necessary to begin prevention conversations at younger ages and equip prevention and outreach workers with communication skills that leverage de-stigmatizing approaches.

Abstract:Background: HIV self-testing (HIVST) offers an innovative and promising approach to increasing HIV testing among Black men in the United States, a population disproportionately affected by HIV. However, engaging Black men in traditional HIV prevention programs has been challenging due to stigma, medical mistrust, and limited access to preventive health services. This formative qualitative study aimed to explore the potential of utilizing barbershops as an example of a nontraditional healthcare venue to promote and distribute HIVST. Methods: Four virtual focus group discussions (FGDs) consisting of 19 participants in North Carolina were conducted with Black men, including barbershop business owners, barbers, and their customers, to assess perceptions of HIVST and the acceptability of partnering with barbershop businesses to promote HIVST. FGDs were digitally recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using a deductive coding approach to thematic analysis. Results: Participants reported that the trusting relationship between barbers and their customers, which may not exist between Black men and health care providers, is a facilitator of collaborating with barbershop businesses to reach Black men for HIVST distribution. Participants recommended providing education for barbers on the use of HIVST, as well as how to inform self-testers about linkage to care following HIVST to build the credibility of the barbers in delivering the intervention. Participants also raised the issue of the cost of HIVST to barbershop customers as a potential barrier to implementation, as well as the possibility that the implementation of such interventions could be seen as out of place in a barbershop business venue. Participants also expressed a strong belief that compensation to barbershops and their employees should accompany any intervention. Conclusion: These findings suggest that barbershop business venues may provide an appropriate venue for HIVST promotion and distribution, though factors like cost, training, and incentivization of implementers are necessary to consider in implementation planning. Furthermore, partnerships between public health actors and the business community must be built on equitable engagement to ensure the long-term viability of these critical initiatives.
Feasibility of Using HIV Care-Continuum Outcomes to Identify Geographic Areas for Targeted HIV Testing

Abstract:Background: Improved detection and linkage to care of previously undiagnosed HIV infections require innovative approaches to testing. We sought to determine the feasibility of targeted HIV testing in geographic areas, defined by continuum of care parameters, to identify HIV-infected persons needing linkage or engagement in care. Methods: Using HIV surveillance data from Washington, DC, we identified census tracts that had an HIV prevalence >1% and were either above (higher risk areas-HRAs) or below (lower risk areas-LRAs) the median for 3 indicators: monitored viral load, proportion of persons out of care (OOC), and never in care. Community-based HIV rapid testing and participant surveys were conducted in the 20 census tracts meeting the criteria. Areas were mapped using ArcGIS, and descriptive and univariate analyses were conducted comparing the areas and participants. Results: Among 1471 persons tested, 28 (1.9%) tested HIV positive; 2.1% in HRAs vs. 1.7% in LRAs (P = 0.57). Higher proportions of men (63.7% vs. 56.7%, P = 0.007) and fewer blacks (91.0% vs. 94.6%, P = 0.008) were tested in LRAs vs. HRAs; no differences were observed in risk behaviors between the areas. Among HIV-positive participants, 54% were new diagnoses (n = 9) or OOC (n = 6), all were Black, 64% were men with a median age of 51 years. Conclusions: Although significant differences in HIV seropositivity were not observed between testing areas, our approach proved feasible and enabled identification of new diagnoses and OOC HIV-infected persons. This testing paradigm could be adapted in other locales to identify areas for targeted HIV testing and other reengagement efforts.
Exploring barriers to SARS-CoV-2 testing uptake in underserved black communities in Louisiana

Abstract:Objective: To collect qualitative data on approaches that can potentially reduce barriers to, and create strategies for, increasing SARS-CoV-2 testing uptake in underserved Black communities in Louisiana. Methods: A series of eight focus groups, including 41 participants, were conducted in primarily Black communities. The Nominal Group Technique (NGT) was used to determine perceptions of COVID-19 as a disease, access to testing, and barriers limiting testing uptake. Results: Common barriers to SARS-CoV-2 testing were identified as lack of transportation, misinformation/lack of information, lack of time/long wait times, fear of the test being uncomfortable and/or testing positive, the cost of testing, and lack of computer/smartphone/internet. The most impactful approaches identified to increase testing uptake included providing testing within the local communities; testing specifically in heavily traveled areas such as supermarkets, churches, schools, and so forth; providing incentives; engaging local celebrities; and providing information to the community through health fairs, or through churches and schools. The strategies that were deemed to be the easiest to implement revolved around communication about testing, with suggested strategies involving churches, local celebrities or expert leaders, social media, text messages, public service announcements, post cards, or putting up signs in neighborhoods. Providing transportation to testing sites, providing incentives, and bringing the testing to neighborhoods and schools were also identified as easy to implement strategies. Conclusions: Several strategies to increase testing uptake were identified in this population. These strategies need to be tested for effectiveness in real-world settings using experimental and observational study designs.

Abstract:Despite recognition that the African American population is underrepresented in studies of health and mental health treatment and prevention efforts, few investigations have systematically examined barriers to African American research participation. Without their participation, treatment and prevention strategies designed to curtail the spread of HIV in their communities will be bound to achieve less than optimal outcomes. Based on the assumption that successful recruitment of African Americans requires knowledge of (a) their beliefs about research, (b) their perceptions of the research process and researchers, (c) their motivations to participate, and (d) the historical and social factors that may be the source of at least some ambivalence, the current study undertook semi-structured interviews with 157 African American, low-income mothers residing in a large urban community where they and their children were at high risk for HIV. Given the sensitive nature of the research topic, members of the community were trained to conduct the interviews. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the interview content suggest that despite having been consented, many participants (a) are not aware of their rights under informed consent and (b) lack knowledge of how the research will be used. Despite this and the subtle suspicion of White researchers held by some, many decide to participate for altruistic reasons. The implications for recruitment of participants in general and African Americans in particular into HIV prevention studies are discussed as are the implications for service providers directly or indirectly involved in the development and delivery of these interventions.

Abstract:Background: Understanding how HIV self-testing (HIVST) can meet the testing needs of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and trans people whose social networks vary is key to upscaling HIVST implementation. We aim to develop a contextual understanding of social networks and HIV testing needs among GBMSM (cis and transgender) and trans women in SELPHI (An HIV Self-testing Public Health Intervention), the UK's largest randomised trial on HIVST. Methods: This study re-analysed qualitative interviews conducted from 2015 to 2020. Forty-three in-person interviews were thematically analysed using the Framework Method. Our analytic matrix inductively categorised participants based on the unmet needs for HIV testing and the extent of social network support. The role of social networks on HIVST behaviour was explored based on individuals' testing trajectories. Results: Four distinct groups were identified based on their unmet testing needs and perceived support from social networks. Optimisation advocates (people with high unmet needs and with high network support, n = 17) strived to tackle their remaining barriers to HIV testing through timely support and empowerment from social networks. Privacy seekers (people with high unmet needs and with low network support, n = 6) prioritised privacy because of perceived stigma. Opportunistic adopters (people with low unmet needs and with high network support, n = 16) appreciated social network support and acknowledged socially privileged lives. Resilient testers (people with low unmet needs and with low network support, n = 4) might hold potentially disproportionate confidence in managing HIV risks without sustainable coping strategies for potential seroconversion. Supportive social networks can facilitate users' uptake of HIVST by: (1) increasing awareness and positive attitudes towards HIVST, (2) facilitating users' initiation into HIVST with timely support and (3) affording participants an inclusive space to share and discuss testing strategies. Conclusions: Our proposed categorisation may facilitate the development of differentiated person-centred HIVST programmes. HIVST implementers should carefully consider individuals' unmet testing needs and perceived levels of social support, and design context-specific HIVST strategies that link people lacking supportive social networks to comprehensive HIV care.

Abstract:The national "Ending the HIV Epidemic: A Plan for America" supports expanded testing in jurisdictions and groups with disproportionate HIV burden. Public health planners benefit from learning HIV testing service (HTS) strengths, challenges, and innovations. We conducted semistructured interviews with 120 HTS staff from local health departments, community-based organizations, and community members in Houston, Texas; Miami, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Washington, DC. We coded interview transcripts using qualitative methods to identify themes. Program strengths include HIV testing integration with other client services; prioritized testing and tailored incentives; multiple advertising methods; and partnerships among HTS providers. Challenges include stigma, fear, and disparities; funding requirements that create competition between providers; and service accessibility, unnecessary repeat testing, and insufficient innovation. The four jurisdictions addressed some, but not all, of these challenges. Cross-jurisdictional collaboration, together with state and federal partners plus program data may help identify additional strategies for strengthening HTS.

Abstract:Introduction: We evaluated internet platforms for distributing HIV self-tests (HIVSTs) to Black or African American (Black) and Hispanic or Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). Methods: We recruited MSM and TGW from general interest, dating, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender platforms. Two HIVSTs were mailed to all MSM and TGW. Surveys (screening, baseline, 4-month, and results reporting) were completed online. After 4 months, participants were mailed another HIVST and a DBS card. All HIVST interpretations and images of HIVST devices were reported online. Results: Of 2093 MSM and 102 TGW, most were recruited via general interest and dating platforms. Over 50% were 18–29 years of age, most identified as gay or bisexual. 45% had not tested for HIV in the past 12 months. 9.1% of MSM reported a positive (reactive for HIV antibodies) result, with the highest percentage among Black MSM (11.5%). Dating platforms recruited higher percentages of MSM who recorded their HIVST result as positive compared with MSM from general interest platforms during the intervention period (11.9% vs 5.5% (p <0.0001)); and MSM who had never tested for HIV reported a greater percentage of positive results compared with MSM who had been tested for HIV before enrollment (16.1% vs. 7.1%; P< 0.0001). MSM were able to correctly interpret and report HIVST results. Of TGW, 7% reported a positive result. Conclusion: Internet dating and general interest platforms can be key to increasing awareness of infection among BMSM, HMSM and TGW persons, including those who do not use existing HIV services.

Abstract:Background: The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention promote HIV testing every 6 months among young men who have sex with men (YMSM) to facilitate entry into the HIV prevention and care continuum. Willingness to be tested may be influenced by testing services' quality. Using a novel mystery shopper methodology, we assessed YMSM's testing experiences in 3 cities and recommend service delivery improvements. Methods: We assessed YMSM's experiences at HIV testing sites in Philadelphia (n = 30), Atlanta (n = 17), and Houston (n = 19). YMSM (18-24) were trained as mystery shoppers and each site was visited twice. After each visit, shoppers completed a quality assurance survey to evaluate their experience. Data were pooled across sites, normed as percentages, and compared across cities. Results: Across cites, visits averaged 30 minutes (SD = 25.5) and were perceived as welcoming and friendly (70.9%). YMSM perceived most sites respected their privacy and confidentiality (84.3%). YMSM noted deficiencies in providers' competencies with sexual minorities (63.4%) and comfort during the visit (65.7%). Sites underperformed on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender visibility (49.6%) and medical forms inclusivity (57.95%). Sites on average did not discuss YMSM's relationship context (49.8%) nor provide risk reduction counseling (56.8%) or safer sex education (24.3%). Sites delivered pre-exposure prophylaxis information and counseling inconsistently (58.8%). Conclusions: Testing sites' variable performance underscores the importance of improving HIV testing services for YMSM. Strategies are recommended for testing sites to promote cultural sensitivity: funding staff trainings, creating systems to assess adherence to testing guidelines and best practices, and implementing new service delivery models.

Abstract:An exact 1-D solution has been obtained to the equations of radiative transfer for chlorophyll fluorescence from an infinitely deep ocean with a uniform distribution of fluorescing bodies. We have also found that the general solution could be reduced to a very simple expression for the case where absorption dominated over scattering. This allowed us to establish an upper bound on the difference in reflectivities for a very high chlorophyll concentration.
Combating Stigma Through HIV Self-Testing: New York State's HIV Home Test Giveaway Program for Sexual Minorities

Abstract:Context: Gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic more than any other group. In New York State (NYS) outside of New York City (NYC), MSM accounted for 57% of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in 2017. HIV/AIDS home testing initiatives have been effective at getting priority populations tested for HIV. Objectives: The NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) administered the HIV Home Test Giveaway (HHTG) program through social media and mobile applications popular among the priority populations to (1) promote HIV screening among gay and bisexual men, MSM, transgender (TG), and gender queer/gender nonconforming (GNC) individuals who have sex with men, and (2) identify individuals with undiagnosed HIV infection. Design/setting: The NYSDOH recruited participants from NYS (excluding NYC) through social media campaigns between November 2016 and January 2018. Interested individuals were directed to an online eligibility survey. Eligible participants received a coupon via e-mail for a free HIV self-test (HIVST) kit through the manufacturer's Web site. Eligible participants received a $20 to $25 Amazon online gift card if they completed a voluntary online follow-up survey regarding their test results, experiences with the HHTG, and HIV/AIDS risk behaviors. Participants were also able to request assistance from the NYSDOH with further testing and various prevention and supportive services. Participants: In total, 6190 individuals participated and 3197 (52%) were eligible and received a coupon. Of the eligible, 2022 (63%) redeemed coupons for HIVST. Results: Among eligible participants, 976 (31%) reported having never been tested for HIV. On the follow-up survey, 922 (29%) participants reported having used the HIVST kit for themselves; 203 (22%) were first-time testers; and 7 (0.8%) tested HIV reactive. Of the follow-up survey participants, 761 (59%) requested assistance with various services. Conclusions: Media campaigns were effective in promoting HIV testing among priority populations and reaching individuals who have never been tested for HIV.
Pap test and HIV testing behaviors of South Carolina women 18-64 years old

Abstract:Background: Pap tests are used to detect abnormal cell growth in the cervix. Early detection of precancerous cells increases the likelihood of treatment success. In fact, the Pap test is one of only a few cancer screening procedures that can prevent cancer by virtue of identifying and intervening upon abnormal precancerous cells in the early stages. There has been a growing prevalence of cervical cancer among HIV-positive women. Early diagnosis is essential to improving survival outcomes of women living with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this study was to describe Pap test behaviors among women in South Carolina and examine its relationship with HIV testing. Methods: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2008 were analyzed. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were performed to describe Pap test behaviors among our sample (n=3,404) of non-Hispanic White and non-Hispanic Black women (18–64 years old). Results: The majority of participants (97%) reported ever having a Pap test. Participants who reported never having a Pap test were 50% less likely to have ever been tested for HIV. Conclusions: The participants in our study met the Healthy People 2010 target of ever having a Pap test. However, less than half of participants (42%) had ever been tested for HIV. A larger proportion of women who have had a Pap test had also been tested for HIV. Practice Implications: Our findings suggest that offering women an HIV test during routine Pap tests may present an opportunity to increase the number of women in South Carolina who know their HIV serostatus.

Abstract:Improving engagement along the HIV care continuum and reducing racial/ethnic disparities are necessary to end the HIV epidemic. Research on African American/Black and Latine (AABL) younger people living with HIV (LWH) is essential to this goal. However, a number of key subgroups are challenging to locate and engage, and are therefore under-represented in research. Primary among these are persons with non-suppressed HIV viral load, severe socioeconomic disadvantage, transgender/gender expansive identities, and refugee/migrant/immigrant populations. Research in community settings is needed to complement studies conducted in medical institutions. The present study describes the efficiency of recruitment strategies used in the community to enroll AABL young and emerging adults LWH ages 19–28 years. Strategies were designed to be culturally responsive and structurally salient. They were: peer-to-peer, social media, classified advertisements (newspaper, craigslist), subway ads, dating apps (Jack'd, Positive Singles), and direct recruitment in community-based organizations. Data were analyzed using mainly descriptive statistics and interpreted using a consensus building approach. We screened 575 individuals in a first step, 409 were eligible (71%), of these 297 presented to the second screening step (73%), but 112 were lost. Almost all presenting at the second step were eligible (98%, 291/297) and 94% enrolled (274/291). Peer-to-peer, dating app (Jack'd), direct recruitment, and craigslist were the most efficient strategies. Recruitment on dating apps was superior to the peer-to-peer approach in yielding eligible participants (OR = 1.5; 95% CI: 0.98–2.3; p = 0.06). The sample enrolled was diverse with respect to HIV viral suppression, gender identify, sexual orientation, immigration status, and barriers to HIV care engagement. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy. Recruitment is a vital aspect of research and warrants attention in the empirical literature.

Abstract:Objective Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, are a key contributor to psychological and physical morbidity across the United States (US). African American (AA) women are disproportionately impacted by STIs, particularly in the Deep South of the US. Strong patient-provider communication can help to increase client understanding of STI prevention and treatment options. This study aimed to explore factors influencing effective patient-provider relationships and communication around STIs (including HIV) and sexual health broadly, which will ultimately inform the refinement of a patient-provider communication tool for discussing PrEP as an HIV prevention method. Methods As part of a larger study focused on PrEP implementation, in-depth, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted among cisgender AA women who are PrEP-eligible, both with and without PrEP experience, as well as providers from three federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) and HIV service agencies in Alabama. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Results A total of 41 participants enrolled, including 21 clients (n = 6 PrEP experienced; n = 15 PrEP naïve) and 20 providers. Qualitative data were organized across the following domains: meaning of health and sexual health, factors influencing the client-provider relationship, and factors influencing sexual health discussions among clients and providers. Key factors influencing client-provider relationships were organized at client, provider, and clinic levels. Factors impacting sexual health discussions between clients and providers were organized at client, provider, and structural levels. Conclusion These interviews identified key determinants of effective client-provider communication pertaining to sexual health among cisgender AA women in the US South who were receiving care at FQHCs and HIV service organizations. Individual, provider, and clinic-level factors were identified that have implications for designing sexual health interventions for cisgender AA women.

Abstract:Objectives: Canadian epidemiologic data demonstrate the fallibility of established HIV testing approaches to reach, diagnose, and link to care a significant portion of the population thereby contributing to missed opportunities to reduce onward HIV transmission. Increasing and diversifying entry points to accessing HIV testing may be a successful strategy to reach people who remain undiagnosed. We sought to determine the perspectives of patients on the acceptability of an offer of routine non-targeted provider-initiated HIV counseling and point-of-care (POC) testing in the health services program of a Community Health Centre in downtown Ottawa, the capital of Canada.Methods: Patients aged 18 years and over accessing the Health Services Program for scheduled clinical appointments were approached by research staff with the offer of a POC HIV test with pre- and post-test counseling. All patients accepting the offer and those declining the offer were offered the opportunity to complete an Acceptability Questionnaire.Results: Questionnaire responses from eligible patients over four consecutive weeks in 2018 strongly endorse the acceptability of an offer of an HIV test in the context of their scheduled health services appointment for a separate clinical condition. This contention held both for those patients accepting the offer and proceeding to testing and for those patients declining the offer.Conclusions: The perspectives of the patients in our study demonstrate that a routine offer of non-targeted provider-initiated HIV counseling and POC testing was considered not only to be an acceptable, but also an appropriate and welcome intervention in a community health services program. These results suggest the potential for actively engaging more individuals—including those less likely to be engaged through a targeted testing approach—in the documented benefits of the HIV care and treatment cascade by increasing the HIV test offer through routine provider initiation. In addition, at the population level, shifting the offer through venue diversification, similarly shows potential for reducing engagement in ongoing HIV transmission behaviors and practices attributed to those unaware of their HIV positive status. Both outcomes fundamental to the goal of eliminating AIDS by 2030.

Abstract:Abstract Background Despite the aging HIV epidemic, increasing age can be associated with hesitancy to test. Addressing this gap is a critical policy concern and highlights the urgent need to identify the underlying factors, to improve knowledge of HIV-related risks as well as uptake of HIV testing and prevention services, in midlife-older adults. Methods We conducted five focus group discussions and 12 in-depth interviews between April 2013 and November 2016 among rural and urban Malawian midlife-older ( ≥ 30 years) men and women. Using a life-course theoretical framework we explored how age is enacted socially and its implications on HIV testing and sexual risk behaviours. We also explore the potential for HIV self-testing (HIVST) to be part of a broader strategy for engaging midlife-older adults in HIV testing, prevention and care. Thematic analysis was used to identify recurrent themes and variations. Results Midlife-older adults (30–74 years of age) associated their age with respectability and identified HIV as “a disease of youth” that would not affect them, with age protecting them against infidelity and sexual risk-taking. HIV testing was felt to be stigmatizing, challenging age norms, threatening social status, and implying “lack of wisdom”. These norms drove self-testing preferences at home or other locations deemed age and gender appropriate. Awareness of the potential for long-standing undiagnosed HIV to be carried forward from past relationships was minimal, as was understanding of treatment-as-prevention. These norms led to HIV testing being perceived as a threat to status by older adults, contributing to low levels of recent HIV testing compared to younger adults. Conclusions Characteristics associated with age-gender norms and social position encourage self-testing but drive poor HIV-risk perception and unacceptability of conventional HIV testing in midlife-older adults. There is an urgent need to provide targeted messages and services more appropriate to midlife-older adults in sub-Saharan Africa. HIVST which has often been highlighted as a tool for reaching young people, may be a valuable tool for engaging midlife-older age groups who may not otherwise test.

Abstract:HIV-related stigma is a well-documented barrier to HIV testing in South Africa, and may be particularly likely to create reluctance to test among South African men, who have reported feeling blamed for HIV by their partners and communities. The present study presents a novel expanded social network recruitment to HIV testing (E-SNRHT) intervention explicitly designed to reduce stigma as a barrier to testing by asking people to recruit anyone they know to testing, thus allowing them to avoid the potential for increased stigma and/or blame associated with direct risk partner recruitment, and helping to normalize openly discussing HIV among social networks. We examined baseline and 6-10-week follow-up data from a 2022–2023 randomized trial in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa that recruited 110 individuals who had been newly diagnosed with HIV and randomly assigned them to recruit people to HIV testing either via the E-SNRHT intervention or via risk network recruitment. Participants in the E-SNRHT intervention reported significant decreases in anticipated and enacted HIV-related stigma between baseline and follow-up; and the E-SNRHT intervention was more effective at decreasing enacted HIV-related stigma than was risk network recruitment. Individuals newly diagnosed with HIV by the E-SNRHT intervention reported significant increases in social support between intervention enrollment and follow-up, and all of these individuals reported participating in positive conversations about HIV services with peers in the 6–10 weeks after intervention enrollment. These findings suggest that E-SNRHT is a potentially important strategy to reduce HIV-related stigma as a barrier to HIV testing among peer networks in KwaZulu-Natal.
