Abstract:Porous electrodes{made of hierarchically nanostructured materials{are omnipresent in various electrochemical energy technologies from batteries and supercapacitors to sensors and electrocatalysis. Modeling the system-level macroscopic transport and relaxation in such electrodes given their complex microscopic geometric structure is important to better understand the performance of the devices in which they are used. The discharge response of capacitive porous electrodes in particular do not necessarily follow the traditional exponential decay observed with at electrodes, which is good enough for describing the general dynamics of processes in which the rate of a dynamic quantity (such as charge) is proportional to the quantity itself. Electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and other similar systems exhibit instead power law-like discharge profiles that are best described with differential equations involving non-integer derivatives. Using the fractional-order integral in the Riemann-Liouville sense and superstatistics we present a treatment of the macroscopic response of such type of electrode systems starting from the mesoscopic behavior of sub-parts of it. The solutions can be in terms of the Mittag-Leffer (ML) function or a power law-like function depending on the underlying assumptions made on the physical parameters of initial charge and characteristic time response. The generalized three-parameter ML function is found to be the best suited to describe experimental results of a commercial EDLC at different time scales of discharge.

Dynamic density functional theory for the charging of electric double layer capacitors

Abstract:We consider the charging of a model capacitor comprised of two planar electrodes and an electrolyte. Upon switching on a voltage difference, electric double layers build up in this setup, which we characterize with a classical dynamic density functional theory (DDFT) that accounts for electrostatic correlations and for molecular excluded volume of finite-sized ions and solvent molecules. Our DDFT predicts the electrode charge Q( t) to form exponentially with two timescales: at early times, the system relaxes on the RC time, namely, λ D L/[ D(2 + σ/ λ D )], with λ D being the Debye length, L being the electrode separation, σ being the ion diameter, and D being the ionic diffusivity. Contrasting an earlier DDFT study, this early-time response does not depend on the applied potential. At late times, the capacitor relaxes with a relaxation time proportional to the diffusion time L 2 / D.

Abstract:The electric double layer (EDL) is one of the key concepts in electrochemistry, and understanding its charging kinetics is of key importance. Significant progress has been made via theoretical methods; however, it is challenging to study the ion dynamics experimentally in porous carbon electrodes under realistic conditions because of fast charge relaxation. In this work, the charging kinetics of porous carbon electrodes with different pore sizes in an aqueous electrolyte was experimentally investigated in electrolytes with various concentrations by using a cavity microelectrode. We were able to observe electrolyte depletion, and we systematically studied the key parameters that will affect the electrolyte depletion, resulting in major changes in the charging kinetics. Results showed that low concentration, high overpotential, and small carbon pore size triggered the electrolyte depletion, decreasing the charging kinetics. These findings further push our understanding of the ion dynamics of the EDL at the charged porous carbon/electrolyte interface.

Abstract:This paper presents the theoretical relations for the chronoamperometric and Chronocoulometric response to a double potential step for a simple electrode reaction at an ultramicrodisk electrode. The experimental investigation employs the oxidation of K4Fe(CN)6 in the presence of KCl at platinum ultramicrodisk electrode with radius 10 mum, and a general purpose microcomputer-based instrumentation used in this work was made in our laboratory by ourselves. The experimental results were found to agree with the theory.

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of electrosorption of ions developing a double layer inside nanopores was studied via a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. A novel graphitized-carbon monolithic material has proven to be a good electrical double-layer capacitor that can be applied in the separation of ions from aqueous solutions. An extended electrical double-layer model indicated that the pore size distribution plays a key role in determining the double-layer capacitance in an electrosorption process. Because of the occurrence of double-layer overlapping in narrow pores, mesopores and micropores make significantly different contributions to the double-layer capacitance. Mesopores show good electrochemical accessibility. Micropores present a slow mass transfer of ions and a considerable loss of double-layer capacitance, associated with a shallow potential distribution inside pores. The formation of the diffuse layer inside the micropores determines the magnitude of the double-layer capacitance at low electrolyte concentrations and at conditions close to the point of zero charge of the material. The effect of the double-layer overlapping on the electrosorption capacitance can be reduced by increasing the pore size, electrolyte concentration, and applied potential. The results are relevant to water deionization.
Differential Capacitance of Electric Double Layers: A Poisson-Bikerman Formula

Abstract:We propose a Poisson-Bikerman (PBik) formula for calculating the differential capacitance (DC) of electrical double layers (EDLs) in aqueous electrolytes or ionic liquids. The PBik theory is a generalization of the classical Poisson-Boltzmann theory to include different steric energies of different-sized ions and water similar to different electrical energies for different-charged ions. Water and ions with interstitial voids in this molecular mean field theory have their physical volumes as they do in molecular dynamics simulations. The PBik formula derived from Fermi distributions of ions and water in arbitrary shape and volume reduces to the Bikerman-Freise formula derived from the lattice model of equal-sized ions. The DC curves predicted by the Gouy-Chapman formula are U-shaped (for point-like ions with zero volume and very dilute solutions). The curves change from U shape to camel shape (Bactrian) and then to bell shape (for finite size ions) as the volume fraction of ions and water changes from zero to medium value then to large value. The transition is characterized by critical and inflection voltages in terms of the particle volume fraction. These voltages determine steric and electrical energies that describe the space/charge competition and saturation properties of ions and water packed in the condensed layer of EDLs under high field conditions. Steric energy is as important as electrical energy in these conditions. PBik computes symmetric DC curves from delicately balanced steric interactions of asymmetric-size ions and water like the experimental data of KPF6 in aqueous solution. It computes asymmetric curves and captures delicately balanced steric or electrical interactions of ions having different volumes or charges in ionic liquids.

Reevaluation of Performance of Electric Double-layer Capacitors from Constant-current Charge/Discharge and Cyclic Voltammetry

Abstract:The electric characteristics of electric-double layer capacitors (EDLCs) are determined by their capacitance which is usually measured in the time domain from constant-current charging/discharging and cyclic voltammetry tests, and from the frequency domain using nonlinear least-squares fitting of spectral impedance. The time-voltage and current-voltage profiles from the first two techniques are commonly treated by assuming ideal RsC behavior in spite of the nonlinear response of the device, which in turn provides inaccurate values for its characteristic metrics [corrected]. In this paper we revisit the calculation of capacitance, power and energy of EDLCs from the time domain constant-current step response and linear voltage waveform, under the assumption that the device behaves as an equivalent fractional-order circuit consisting of a resistance Rs in series with a constant phase element (CPE(Q, α), with Q being a pseudocapacitance and α a dispersion coefficient). In particular, we show with the derived (Rs, Q, α)-based expressions, that the corresponding nonlinear effects in voltage-time and current-voltage can be encompassed through nonlinear terms function of the coefficient α, which is not possible with the classical RsC model. We validate our formulae with the experimental measurements of different EDLCs.
How microstructures, oxide layers, and charge transfer reactions influence double layer capacitances. Part 1: impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry to estimate electrochemically active surface areas (ECSAs)

Abstract:Varying the electrode potential rearranges the charges in the double layer (DL) of an electrochemical interface by a resistive-capacitive current response. The capacitances of such charge relocations are frequently used in the research community to estimate electrochemical active surface areas (ECSAs), yet the reliability of this methodology is insufficiently examined. Here, the relation of capacitances and ECSAs is critically assessed with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) data on polished (Au, Ti, Ru, Pt, Ni, glassy carbon, graphite plate) and porous (carbon fleeces) electrodes. By investigating this variety of electrodes, the frequency-dependencies observed in the measured capacitances are shown to arise from the inherent resistive-capacitive DL response, charge transfer reactions, and resistively damped capacitive currents in microstructures (such as pores, pinholes, or cracks). These frequency-dependencies are typically overlooked when capacitances are related to ECSAs. The capacitance at the specimen-characteristic relaxation frequency of the resistive-capacitive DL response is proposed as a standardized capacitance-metric to estimate ECSAs. In 1 M perchloric acid, the polished gold electrode and the high-surface area carbon fleeces show ratios of capacitance-metric over surface-area of around 3.7 μF cm-2. Resistively damped currents in microstructures and low-conducting oxide layers are shown to complicate trustworthy capacitance-based estimations of ECSAs. In the second part of this study, advanced equivalent circuits models to describe the measured EIS and CV responses are presented.
Moment-Tensor-Based Constant-Potential Modeling of Electrical Double Layers

Abstract:Constant-potential molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are indispensable for understanding the capacitance, structure, and dynamics of electrical double layers (EDLs) at the atomistic level. However, the classical constant-potential method, relying on the so-called 'floating charges' to keep electrode equipotential, overlooks quantum effects on the electrode and always underestimates EDL capacitance for typical electrochemical systems featuring metal electrodes in aqueous electrolytes. Here, we propose a universal theoretical framework as moment-tensor-based constant potential method (mCPM) to capture electronic structure variations with electric moments. For EDLs at Au(111) electrodes, mCPM-based MD reveals bell-shaped capacitance curves in magnitude and shape both quantitatively consistent with experiments. It further unveils the potential-dependent local electric fields, agreeing with experimental observations of redshift vibration of interfacial water under negative polarization and predicting a blueshift under positive polarization, and identifies geometry dependence of two time scales during EDL formation.

Abstract:Abstract We present a study of the structure and differential capacitance of electric double layers of aqueous electrolytes. We consider electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) composed of spherical cations and anions in a dielectric continuum confined between a planar cathode and anode. The model system includes steric as well as Coulombic ion-ion and ion-electrode interactions. We compare results of computationally expensive, but “exact” , Brownian Dynamics (BD) simulations with approximate, but cheap, calculations based on classical Density Functional Theory (DFT). Excellent overall agreement is found for a large set of system parameters, including variations in concentration, ionic size- and valency-asymmetries, applied voltages and electrode separation, provided the differences between the canonical ensemble of the BD simulations and the grand-canonical ensemble of DFT are properly taken into account. In particular, a careful distinction is made between the differential capacitance $$C_N$$ C N at fixed number of ions and $$C_\mu $$ C μ at fixed ionic chemical potential. Furthermore, we derive and exploit their thermodynamic relations. In the future these relations will also be useful for comparing and contrasting experimental data with theories for supercapactitors and other systems. The quantitative agreement between simulation and theory indicates that the presented DFT is capable of accounting accurately for coupled Coulombic and packing effects. Hence it is a promising candidate to cheaply study room temperature ionic liquids at much lower dielectric constants than that of water.

Calculation of a pure double-layer capacitance from a constant phase element in the impedance measurements

Abstract:Considering literature of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) it was discovered that for calculation of the value of double-layer capacitance (Cdl) from the constant phase element (CPE) two equations, with or without solution resistance (Rs) could be used. After calculation of Cdl for defined values of CPE constant Ydl, CPE exponent , Rs and charge transfer resistance (Rct), it was confirmed in this work that different results for Cdl were obtained by including Rs in the calculation of Cdl. It was also stated that "it is quite difficult to understand how both parameters (Rct and Rs) could be expressed by the same time constant, i.e. the same parameter ." By investigating the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at Ni mesh 40 electrode in the solution of 1 M KOH at 25 oC using EIS measurements, it was shown that different Cdl vs. E plots were obtained using these two equations for Cdl calculation. A simple solution to avoid this problem with detailed explanation, the use of equation without Rs , has been suggested in this work.

Abstract:An electric double layer (EDL) generally exists at the interface between a conductive electrode and its adjacent liquid electrolyte. Accurate measurement of the capacitance of EDL is requisite but a great challenge due to the complexity of its variation mechanism correlated with the magnitude and frequency of applied signals and the difficulty in measuring the inner layer potentials across the EDL. Herein, a novel dielectrophoresis (DEP)-based approach is proposed to measure the capacitance of an EDL at a microelectrode/electrolyte interface. The measurement is achieved by employing DEP manipulation to micro polystyrene (PS) spheres suspended in a liquid electrolyte and determining the capacitance of EDL on the microelectrodes from the moving velocities of spheres. This method allows measurement of the capacitances of EDL under alternating current (AC) signals with different magnitudes and frequencies, so that the capacitance change with the magnitude and frequency of the applied signal can be characterized. The method avoids the impedance interference from the liquid electrolyte, external measuring systems, and other crosstalks, enabling an accurate measurement of double layer capacitance. In addition, the inner layer potentials across EDL under different magnitudes and frequencies of applied signals are comprehensively investigated, which facilitates an understanding of the ion behavior at the interfacial boundary that governs external observations of electrochemical reactions. The accurate measurement of the capacitance of EDL is of significance to explore the mechanism of interfacial functioning of electrochemical and bioelectrical devices and systems.

Abstract:In this work, we have investigated the influence of alkali metal cations on the electrical double-layer (EDL) properties for various metal electrodes. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, we demonstrate that those cations significantly affect the EDL capacitance in the case of single-crystalline Cu(111), Cu(100), Au(111), Pt(111), stepped Pt(775), and kinked Pt(12 10 5) electrodes in 0.05 M MeClO4 (Me+ = Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) electrolytes. For all the electrodes, the capacitance always linearly increases with decreasing hydration energy of Me+ in the following order: Li+ < Na+ < K+ < Rb+ < Cs+. Moreover, we estimate the effective concentrations of the alkali metal cations near the electrode surfaces by correlating the capacitances with the relative permittivity. Seven steps to reliable cyclic voltammetry measurements for the determination of double layer capacitance

Abstract:Abstract Discovery of electrocatalytic materials for high-performance energy conversion and storage applications relies on the adequate characterization of their intrinsic activity, which is currently hindered by the dearth of a protocol for consistent and precise determination of double layer capacitance ( C DL ). Herein, we propose a seven-step method that aims to determine C DL reliably by scan rate-dependent cyclic voltammetry considering aspects that strongly influence the outcome of the analysis, including (a) selection of a suitable measuring window, (b) the uncompensated resistance, (c) optimization of measuring settings, (d) data acquisition, (e) selection of data suitable for analysis, (f) extraction of the desired information, and (g) validation of the results. To illustrate the proposed method, two systems were studied: a resistor–capacitor electric circuit, and a glassy carbon disk in an electrochemical cell. With these studies, it is demonstrated that when any of the mentioned steps of the procedure are neglected, substantial deviations of the results are observed with misestimations as large as 61% in the case of the investigated electrochemical system. Moreover, we propose allometric regression as a more suitable model than linear regression for the determination of C DL for both the ideal and the non-ideal systems investigated. We stress the importance of assessing the accuracy of not only highly specialized electrochemical methods, but also of those that are well-known and commonly used as it is the case of the voltammetric methods. The procedure proposed herein is not limited to the determination of C DL , but can be effectively applied to any other analysis that aims to deliver quantitative results via voltammetric methods, which is crucial for the study of kinetic and diffusion phenomena in electrochemical systems.
A Kinetic-Dominated Charging Mechanism within Representative Aqueous Electrolyte Based Electric Double-Layer Capacitors.

Abstract:The chemical nature of electrolytes has been demonstrated to play a pivotal role in the charge storage of electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), whereas primary mechanisms are still partially resolved but controversial. In this work, a systematic exploration into EDL structures and kinetics of representative aqueous electrolytes is performed with numerical simulation and experimental research. Unusually, a novel charging mechanism exclusively predominated by kinetics is recognized, going beyond traditional views of manipulating capacitances preferentially via interfacial structural variations. Specifically, strikingly distinctive EDL structures stimulated by diverse ion sizes, valences, and mixtures manifest a virtually identical EDL capacitance, where the dielectric nature of solvents attenuates ionic effects on electrolyte redistributions, in stark contradiction with solvent-free counterpart and traditional Helmholtz theory. Meanwhile, corresponding kinetics evolve conspicuously with ionic species, intimately correlated with ion solvent interactions. The achieved mechanisms are subsequently illuminated by electrochemical measurements, highlighting the crucial interplay between ions and solvents in regulating EDLC performances.
Poisson-Nernst-Planck charging dynamics of an electric double layer capacitor: symmetric and asymmetric binary electrolytes

Abstract:A parallel plate capacitor containing an electrolytic solution is the simplest model of a supercapacitor, or electric double layer capacitor. Using both analytical and numerical techniques, we solve the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations for such a system, describing the mean-field charging dynamics of the capacitor, when a constant potential difference is abruptly applied to its plates. Working at constant total number of ions, we focus on the physical processes involved in the relaxation and, whenever possible, give its functional shape and exact time constants. We first review and study the case of a symmetric binary electrolyte, where we assume the two ionic species to have the same charges and diffusivities. We then relax these assumptions and present results for a generic strong (i.e. fully dissociated) binary electrolyte. At low electrolyte concentration, the relaxation is simple to understand, as the dynamics of positive and negative ions appear decoupled. At higher electrolyte concentration, we distinguish several regimes. In the linear regime (low voltages), relaxation is multi-exponential, it starts by the build-up of the equilibrium charge profile and continues with neutral mass diffusion, and the relevant time scales feature both the average and the Nernst-Hartley diffusion coefficients. In the purely nonlinear regime (intermediate voltages), the initial relaxation is slowed down exponentially due to increased capacitance, while bulk effects become more and more evident. In the fully nonlinear regime (high voltages), the dynamics of charge and mass are completely entangled and, asymptotically, the relaxation is linear in time.

Abstract:For battery electrodes, measured capacity decays as charge/discharge current is increased. Such rate-performance is important from a practical perspective and is usually characterised via galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements. However, such measurements are very slow, limiting the number of rate experiments which are practical in a given project. This is a particular problem during mechanistic studies where many rate measurements are needed. Here, building on work by Heubner at al., we demonstrate chronoamperometry (CA) as a relatively fast method for measuring capacity-rate curves with hundreds of data points down to C-rates below 0.01C. While Heubner et al. reported equations to convert current transients to capacity vs. C-rate curves, we modify these equations to give capacity as a function of charge/discharge rate, R. We show that such expressions can be combined with a basic model to obtain simple equations which can fit data for both capacity vs. C-rate and capacity vs. R. We demonstrate that these equations can accurately fit experimental data within normal experimental ranges of rate. However, we also observe that, at high rates, the curves obtained from CA deviate from the normal behaviour showing a new, previously unobserved, decay feature. We associate this feature with the very early part of the current transient where electronic motion dominates the current. Using a simple model, we show that the dependence of the high-rate time constant on electrode thickness can be linked to electrode conductivity.

Abstract:The electrochemical storage of energy was considered in a special kind of active carbon materials used as capacitor electrodes. The porous carbon material prepared by KOH and vapor re-etching exhibits perfect physical structure and properties. Its good electrochemical performances were confirmed by the experiment of charge/discharge and the specific capacitance of active carbon was 173.2 F/g. Under the large discharge current condition, the specific capacitance of EDLC decayed only 12 F/g. A evaluation of capacitor performance by voltammetry characteristics was also discussed. A hybrid power source consisting of Nickel-hydrogen and double layer capacitor was demonstrated to power successfully a simulated power load encountered in communication equipment. The new technique of getting high working voltage for capacitor was discussed in detail. The working voltage over 10 V and the resistance less than 250Ωm was obtained.
