Abstract:The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the most influential climatic phenomenon on an interannual timescale. Studying the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) and ENSO events during typical geological periods is helpful for understanding the trends of ENSO activities in the future, especially under the background of global warming. Here we quantitatively reconstructed a 115-year history of SST and ENSO activity around 282 ka during Marine Isotope Stage 8 (MIS8) by using the growth rate of Porites corals from Xisha Islands in the South China Sea. The results show that the average coral growth rate (6.0 +/- 1.0 mm/yr (1 sigma)) around 282 ka was only 56.1% of the modern average value (10.7 +/- 0.9 mm/yr; 1937-2014 CE), and the average SST (26.0 +/- 0.3 degrees C (1 sigma)) was 0.7 +/- 0.4 degrees C and 1.1 +/- 0.4 degrees C lower than that in the Little Ice Age (LIA; 1520-1676 CE; 26.7 +/- 0.2 degrees C) and the present (1937-2014; 27.1 +/- 0.2 degrees C), respectively. The reconstructed results show that there was significant ENSO activity with moderate intensity or above at 282 ka, while the frequency of ENSO activity at that time was lower than that of the LIA and the present. This seems to indicate that the frequency of moderate intensity ENSO activity increases with rising SST. Given the current rapid warming, the future trend of ENSO activities deserves close attention.
Diverse impacts of ENSO on wintertime rainfall over the Maritime Continent

Abstract:The diverse influences of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on wintertime precipitation over the Maritime Continent are herein investigated using observational data. The ENSO events are divided into four categories-strong El Nino, strong La Nina, moderate El Nino and moderate La Nina -according to their amplitudes. Significant negative Maritime Continent precipitation anomalies are observed during strong El Nino events, whereas wet conditions occur during strong La Nina events. In the case of moderate La Nina events, the Maritime Continent rainfall anomalies are similar in spatial structure and comparable in amplitude to strong La Nina events, whereas almost no significant rainfall anomalies are observed in moderate El Nino years. Further analysis shows that strong El Nino (strong/ moderate La Nina) events are associated with a significant anticyclone (cyclone) surface response over the western tropical Pacific and related to a significant descending (ascending) branch of the Walker circulation around the Philippines. However, during moderate El Nino events, both the central-eastern and the western tropical sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) areweak and cannot significantly change the Walker circulation over the tropical Pacific. Therefore, the descending branch anomalies of the Walker circulation associated with moderate El Nino events around the Philippines are quite weak and cannot cause significant negative precipitation anomalies in that location. In addition, there is large case-to-case variance in the tropical Pacific SST Aassociated with moderate El Nino events, which also contributes to the weak Maritime Continent rainfall response in the composite analysis.
Phytoplankton and chlorophyll a relationships with ENSO in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica

Abstract:The historical data of phytoplankton and chlorophyll a (Chl a ) (1990–2002) obtained during the Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE) in the Prydz Bay have been integrated. The results showed that the temperature, salinity, nutrients, and oxygen of seawater changed when El Niño/La Niña occurred. The variation of biological communities reflected the response of ecosystem to environmental changes. During El Niño period, Chl a concentration and phytoplankton community structure changed significantly, and the relative proportion of diatoms increased while dinoflagellates decreased. During La Niña period, the proportion of diatoms decreased, but the golden-brown algae and blue-green algae increased significantly. The variation of phytoplankton population directly affected the biodiversity of the bay, which were also quite sensitive to the marine environment changes. Meanwhile, the satellite remote sensing data of 2002–2011 (December–March) have been used to study the temporal connection change of Chl a and phytoplankton in the Prydz Bay. We found that there were significant differences in the monthly variation characteristics of satellite remote sensing Chl a and sea surface temperature (SST), which had some links with sea ice melting and El Niño/La Niña events. We found that the start time of bloom advanced, lagged or synchronized with the changes of the SST, and we also found the occurrence time of phytoplankton bloom corresponded with the sea ice melting inner bay. To some extent, this study will help us understand the relationships between ENSO events and the phytoplankton bloom in the Southern Ocean.

Abstract:Using Empirical Orthogonal Function method,the SSHA,SSTA,SSUA and SSVA data in the South China Sea(SCS) and the tropical Pacific Ocean are studied.The SSHA during ENSO event can well explain that of the spatial patterns of the first EOF mode which accounts for 44.7 % of the model variance.During El Ni o period,the SSH in the whole basin of the SCS decreases and the spatial distributions of SSHA can be quite different from one to another.The SSHA minimum still occurs in the middle of the basin during the precursors phase.But during the peak phase,as the anomaly in the south increases,a tilt with larger SSHA in the south and smaller SSHA in the north is built up in the basin.While during the returning phase,the distribution of SSHA can be different depending on whether there will be a La Ni a event after the El Ni o.The SSHA in the SCS relates well with the atmosphere circulation.During El Ni o period,the strengthen of Hadley cell makes the water exchange increase between the east of the SCS and the west tropical Pacific Ocean.The decrease of the sea-surface temperature and the loss of the sea water make the SSH fall down.The changes of the structure and intensity of the Walker cell can also count on the falling SSH.During the El Ni o,the sea surface height is lower then other years.
Impacts of ENSO on Tropical Pacific Chlorophyll Biomass under Historical and RCP8.5 Scenarios

Abstract:The present study aims to investigate the influences of El Nino and Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events on chlorophyll biomass in the tropical Pacific under historical and RCP8.5 scenarios with simulations from the Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble (CESM-LE) project. Large variance in surface chlorophyll concentrations is identified across the Peruvian Upwelling (PU), Equatorial Upwelling (EU), and Western Pacific (WP) regions within the tropical Pacific. Results suggest that responses of surface chlorophyll to ENSO in these regions are governed by different mechanisms. The increasing chlorophyll during La Nina is a consequence of increasing nutrients, influenced by local upwelling systems in the PU and EU regions, while the supplementary nutrients in the WP region arise from the eastern Pacific through stronger surface westward currents. Under RCP8.5 scenario, stronger water warming in the eastern equatorial Pacific leads to a remarkable reduction in the amplitudes of seasonal cycles and interannual variations of chlorophyll in both PU and EU regions. This results in less responsiveness of the chlorophyll biomass to El Nino and moderate La Nina compared to the historical period. However, though warming induces a decrease in chlorophyll concentrations in the WP region, the interannual variations of chlorophyll have shown an improvement in correlation with ENSO events. Meanwhile, despite the small phytoplankton-dominated community being observed under future scenario, species dominance is likely to shift back to diatoms once extreme La Nina occurs, which is unseen in all El Nino and moderate La Nina cases. Phytoplankton chlorophyll biomass is critical for ocean primary production and the entire ecosystem. Nutrient distribution is regulated by physical dynamic processes led by ENSO, which in turn affect chlorophyll concentration. Restricted by the length of data and spatial scales, the mechanism analysis of ENSO's effect on chlorophyll is not comprehensive enough. To provide a full picture of the ENSO-chlorophyll relationship in the tropical Pacific, we have conducted an analysis and comparison of the responses of chlorophyll to ENSO under both historical and future scenarios. We find that even though the physical and biological mechanisms do not change under the future scenario, the frequency and intensity of the chlorophyll response to ENSO are significantly altered, influenced by rising ocean temperatures, especially in the eastern tropical Pacific where the warming is faster. Our results suggest not only the changes in ENSO dynamics but also the rapid rise in mean-state ocean temperature in the tropical Pacific would be responsible for the changes of phytoplankton chlorophyll biomass during ENSO in future scenario. Abstract:Abstract The chlorophyll in the northern South China Sea (NSCS) shows strong interannual variability between different phases of the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO), primarily due to the influence from Kuroshio intrusion. Chlorophyll observations also reveal that significant year‐to‐year variation remains in the same ENSO phase, but its controlling mechanism is unknown. In this study, we examined driving mechanisms for such regional ecosystem variability on a year‐to‐year timescale. Using observational data and modeling results, we found that both cyclonic eddies (CEs) and wind‐induced mixing affect phytoplankton variability, but the former is the dominant factor regulating the interannual variability of chlorophyll during La Niña years, while the latter becomes the dominant one during El Niño years. The underlying mechanisms leading to the contrast in biological responses are attributable to changes in background nutricline depth and mixed‐layer depth (MLD) during different ENSO phases. During La Niña, both thermocline and nutricline are deepened in the NSCS. Thus, wind mixing is less effective in non‐eddy areas due to the deepened nutricline, while the CE‐induced subsurface nutrient anomaly associated with increased MLD is able to control the interannual variability of chlorophyll. During El Niño, wind‐induced mixing is more effective than CEs because the surface wind can influence a larger area.

Abstract:With the advancement of present-day ocean color satellites, the spatiotemporal variations of oceanic Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration, a proxy for phytoplankton population, can be monitored at regional and global scales. Estimating long-term changes in Chl-a concentration, however, is mainly constrained by the limited availability of ocean color data and the significant influence of climate oscillations like the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). In this study, we investigate the influence of ENSO on regional and global Chl-a timeseries using two ocean color datasets spanning from September 1997 to December 2022. Our analysis found that global Chl-a concentration exhibits a significant increasing trend over the study period. Most of the increasing trends are detected in the Southern Hemisphere and high-latitudinal regions, including the Southern Ocean. In light-limited regions like the Southern Ocean, enhanced Chl-a concentration shows a strong positive correlation with warming sea surface temperature (SST). Conversely, most oceans in the Northern Hemisphere exhibit decreasing trends, which are highly correlated with warming SST and ENSO phases. Additionally, we identify distinctive fingerprints of four extreme ENSO events: two extreme El Niño events (1997–1998 and 2015–2016) and two triple La Niña events (1998–2001 and 2020–2022) in these timeseries. Furthermore, empirical orthogonal function analysis reveals that the dominant mode of interannual Chl-a variability is associated with an ENSO-like pattern, accounting for about 13 % of the total variability. Intriguingly, this principal mode is highly correlated with the phases of ENSO (R = -0.87) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation ( R = −0.90) on an interannual scale. This study underscores the significance of assessing the impacts of ENSO on long-term Chl-a trend estimation.

Abstract:The study provides one of the first lines of evidence showing linkages between Antarctic phytoplankton abundance and composition in response to ENSO, based on historical reconstruction of sediment biomarkers. In addition to sediment biomarkers, field measured and remote sensing data of phytoplankton abundance were also recorded from Prydz Bay, Eastern Antarctica. Community structure of field measured phytoplankton showed significant El Niño/La Niña-related succession during 1990 to 2002. In general, the number of algae species decreased during El Niño and La Niña years compared to normal years. Austral summer monthly variation of remotely sensed chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), particulate organic carbon (POC), and sea surface temperature (SST) indicated that ENSO impacted the timing of phytoplankton blooms during 2007 to 2011. Phytoplankton blooms (indicated by Chl-a and POC) preceded the increases in SST during El Niño years, and lagged behind the SST increases during La Niña years. Stratigraphic record of marine sedimentary lipid (brassicasterol, dinosterol and alkenones) biomarkers inferred that the proportions of different algae (diatoms, dinoflagellates and haptophytes) changed significantly between El Niño and La Niña events. The relative proportion of diatoms increased, with that of dinoflagellates being decreased during El Niño years, while it was reversed during La Niña years.

Abstract:The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a prominent climatological phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean that exerts a significant influence on both physical states and biological activities across the globe through oceanic and atmospheric teleconnections. In this study, we investigate the impact of ENSO on phytoplankton variability in the Western North Pacific (WNP) region, revealing a delayed relationship with a time lag of more than one year. During the boreal early spring after the peak phase of El Niño, we find a significant increase in chlorophyll-a concentrations in the WNP. This delayed ENSO impact is due to the propagation of reflected ocean Rossby waves from the eastern to the western Pacific. As the Rossby waves reach the western Pacific, they initiate continuous northward transports of the nutrients. The increased nutrient supply promotes phytoplankton growth in the WNP region, where phosphate (PO4) - limited conditions prevail. Our finding suggests the role of ENSO in shaping the biological dynamics in the WNP over an extended time scale through the specific mechanisms involved. Long-term climate model simulation supports these observed findings.

Abstract:We detected a robust cyclonic eddy in the northeastern Natuna Island in the Northwest Monsoon during an extremely negative El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) period (i.e., extreme La Niña event) using the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) reanalysis results. In the intense La Niña event from 1999 to 2001, we also found an increase in the abundance of chlorophyll coincided with the eddy strength pattern using the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data. Furthermore, this chlorophyll intensity may be related to the upwelling of water mass to the surface at the eddy's center. The intensification of chlorophyll compared to the average value at the corresponding year is 83,4% (1999), 37.8% (2000), 37.3% (2008), and 72.5% (2011). In this paper, we revisit the identification of solid eddies in extreme La Niña events from 1999 to 2012 and further discuss the mechanism of the relationship between chlorophyll intensity and eddy strength, especially during the months of the extreme La Niña event.
Interannual and Decadal Variabilities of Phytoplankton Community in the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean: a Case Study of Relationship with ENSO and Arctic Oscillation Abnormity

Abstract:We used molecular biomarkers (brassicasterol, dinosterol and C37 alkenones) measured from the surface sediments of the Bering Sea, the Chukchi Sea and the western Arctic Ocean in years of 1999 and 2010 to represent the groups of phytoplankton (diatoms, dinoflagellates and coccolithophores) and reconstruct the phytoplankton composition structure and biomass. The distribution of concentrations of three biomarkers were compatible to previous studies on measured phytoplankton, which showed that the phytoplankton biomass was most abundant in the Chukchi Sea, followed by the Bering Sea and the western Arctic Ocean, and diatoms were the dominant group. It suggests that molecular biomarkers are the suitable indicators of phytoplankton composition, structure and abundance. A record of biomarkers in a sediment core (NB01) collected at the Bering Sea in 2010 presented that the biomass of three phytoplankton groups increased in past 107 years, and their variation patterns were consistent. The synchronous increase of concentrations of phytoplankton biomarkers and cholesterol, a proxy of zooplankton biomass, implied that the primary production increased intensely in the last hundreds of years, corresponding to the trend of sea-ice melting as a result of global warming. Moreover, our results suggested that the combined effect of the anormal interannual changes of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Arctic Oscillations (AO) played a key role in regulating the interannual and decadal variations of phytoplankton biomass and community composition, giving us an insight into the impact of atmospheric circulation on phytoplankton production and carbon flux in the Arctic seas.
Stratigraphic record of U37 K in Sanmen Bay: the effect of SST and EI Niño on life activity in macrobenthos communities

Abstract:Sea surface temperature (SST) from 1916–2003 was estimated by using the index of U37K of organic compounds in Sanmen Bay (SMB) sediment. It fluctuated between 15.97°C and 18.00°C with an average of 17.03°C. The estimated SST was 3.52°C lower than the annual average temperature measured in the same year but was close to the temperature measured in fall. The research suggested that the climate events (EI Niño) on large scale in Sanmen Bay were affected by the climate, similar to that in the East Pacific Ocean (EPC). The change scale was also affected by geographical location and local climate such as monsoon. According to the chronological basis, the events in SMB corresponded to those in EPC, but the scale of variation is not so strong as that in EPC. By comparing the community, biomass, individual density and biodiversity of macrobenthos during EI Niño (between 2002 and 2003) and non-EI Niño (between 2005 and 2006) periods, it was indicated that certain macrobenthos communities in SMB responded to EI Niño events. During the EI Niño period, Taiwan warm current (TWC) is much stronger than that in normal years. The diversity of macrobenthos during 2002 and 2003 was relatively low owing to invasion of the warm current that caused salinity change. The macrobenthos and zooplankton in Sanmen Bay responded to EI Niño events significantly. The diversity of macrobenthos decreased significantly because TWC invaded into the shallow bay from the floor and thus changed the temperature and salinity in the bay. On the other hand, zooplankton species, biomass and abundance increased in the period of EI Niño since the invaded warm current brought abundant species of zooplankton.

Impacts of Different Types of ENSO Events on Thermocline Variability in the Southern Tropical Indian Ocean

Abstract:Remarkable interannual variability in the thermocline depth in the southern tropical Indian Ocean (STIO) is analyzed using reanalysis data during 1980-2017. Previous studies have shown that the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a significant relationship with thermocline depth anomalies in this region. We find that both the eastern-Pacific (EP) and central-Pacific (CP) ENSO have important impacts on the STIO thermocline variation. The positive and negative phases of thermocline anomalies in the STIO are induced by asymmetric forcings from the two phases of ENSO. EP-El Nino and CP-La Nina events tend to induce larger thermocline depth anomalies in the STIO. Equatorial westerly and STIO anticyclonic winds during EP-El Nino events can induce downwelling Rossby waves that extend far toward the western Indian Ocean, which dominates the westward propagation of thermocline anomalies, while upwelling Rossby waves during CP-La Nina events cannot extend that far west. Plain Language Summary Despite more researches mentioned about the global warming slowdown, the extreme events like the El Nino-South Oscillation (ENSO) happen more frequently in the real world. Previous studies proved that the ocean thermocline depth in the southern tropical Indian Ocean (STIO) is influenced by different ENSO events (El Nino and La Nina), and the ENSO events have been divided as the eastern-Pacific (EP) and central-Pacific (CP) El Nino/La Nina based on different locations of the maximum sea surface temperature anomalies centers during the past decades. In this study, we present the relationships between the STIO thermocline depth and EP/CP El Nino/La Nina in this complex circumstance. We find that forcings from El Nino and La Nina are asymmetric, and the EP-El Nino and CP-La Nina events tend to induce larger thermocline variations. Considering these two different ENSO events, as mentioned above, happen more frequently, the variation of the STIO thermocline might be much greater in the future.

Abstract:The influence of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on productivity at upwelling systems has been extensively studied. However, in recent decades, ENSO diversity has been documented; there are more frequent events with anomalies in the central Pacific (CP) causing ecological impacts that are different from the canonical events centered in the eastern Pacific (EP). We hypothesize that ENSO effects on upwelling intensity and its biological response are highly dependent on ENSO diversity. Wavelet coherence was computed for monthly standardized anomalies of Ekman transport and sea surface Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration from eight upwelling centers located along the west coast of the Baja California peninsula (1993–2022). Ekman transport (ET) showed a non-linear association with ENSO at interannual periodicities between 1.2 and 7 years, as well as semiannual scale variability. Coherence between ENSO and ET showed a reduction in upwelling intensity during CP ENSO events and an increased upwelling intensity after EP El Niño events with regional differences. Our results reveal an influence of northern Pacific circulation that subsequently influences ENSO events during its development and its peak. We detected an influence of SST and wind anomalies on the ENSO–Ekman transport connection associated with the northern Pacific Meridional Mode pattern. The CP shows an important role in sea surface Chl-a concentration anomalies (1998–2022). We highlight the conceptual relevance of distinguishing ENSO diversity, with influential ecological effects associated with CP ENSO events.

Abstract:The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is one of the main factors causing extreme climate events and, thus, has a significant influence on global climate systems. However, the long-term effects of ENSO on vegetation are not well understood due to the complexity of the ENSO phenomenon under global warming. Here, we examined the variations in the response of Leaf Area Index (LAI) to different types of ENSO from 1982 to 2017 in the west Pacific region and explored their relationship with climatic factors. Results show that about 34.5% of the vegetated area in the west Pacific region displayed LAI anomalies correlated with ENSO index from 1982 to 2017, which distributed differently across climatic types. Moreover, LAI anomalies elicited by the Central-Pacific type and by the Eastern-Pacific type of ENSO events were significantly different, which were contributed to the controls of the different types of ENSO on precipitation and temperature.

Abstract:El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events, which generally mature in winter, profoundly affect the following summer rainfall in eastern China (ECSR), but such an impact can change significantly with decadal background. This study examines how the impact has changed since the 1950s by running correlation and regression analyses. It is found that ENSO's impact on ECSR has undergone two decadal shifts, one in the late 1970s and the other in the 1990s. Sequentially, three distinct ENSO-induced ECSR anomaly patterns are categorized, which exhibit both robust and changeable sides. The robust side manifests generally as more precipitation in the Yangtze River basin affected by the anomalous tropical western North Pacific anticyclone (WNPAC) in the post-El Nino summer. The changeable side is reflected in the more variable ENSO-induced rainfall anomalies north of the Yangtze River, due to the different ENSO-induced East Asian midlatitude circulation anomalies. Meanwhile, the El Nino-induced drought in South China has been enhanced since the late 1970s with the intensification of the anomalous WNPAC. ENSO's changing impact on the ECSR stems from the changes of ENSO-induced tropical and midlatitude circulation anomalies over East Asia, which are associated with different zonal (from the tropical Pacific to the Indian Ocean) and meridional (from the tropical Pacific to the midlatitude North Pacific) teleconnections of ENSO-induced SST anomalies. The former affects the intensity and location of the anomalous WNPAC by affecting the Indian Ocean capacitor effect and convection anomalies over the tropical Indo-western Pacific. The latter modulates the ocean-to-atmosphere feedback in the midlatitude North Pacific, contributes to different local geopotential anomaly sources, and then directly or indirectly through the Rossby wave train affects the East Asian midlatitude circulation.

Abstract:Seasonal patterns of marine net primary production (NPP) are crucial for understanding the marine ecosystem and biogeochemical cycles. Uncoupling of seasonal variations between NPP and phytoplankton chlorophyll-a over different areas has attracted much attention. In this study, following a review of previous studies, monthly climatological NPP data from 2003 to 2020, estimated using the Size-fractioned Phytoplankton Pigment Absorption ( a ph )-based NPP Model (SABPM), were selected to study the seasonal variability of NPP in the South China Sea (SCS). Results showed the spatial differences of NPP seasonality and its departures from climatology in extreme El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) years. Cluster analysis for climatological monthly data identified significant differences of NPP seasonality in five typical regions. In coastal regions along the northern SCS and off eastern Vietnam, NPP exhibited the most obvious seasonal cycle with maximum (minimum) values in summer (winter), attributable mainly to river discharge and summer upwelling. In regions off northwestern Luzon and coast of southern SCS, NPP showed peaks in winter, which were related to strong mixing and upwelling. In northwestern SCS, NPP was high during May–September in phase with sea surface temperature and the primary controlling factors were found to be shallow nutricline depth and wind-driven mixing. Owing to the deep nutricline depth in the central basin, NPP exhibited little seasonal variability; only a weak signal was observed in spring in phase with photosynthetically active radiation. Local dynamics on regulating the nutrient supply and light availability contribute to these regional differences in NPP seasonality, which could also be affected by extreme climate events. The largest anomalies of the NPP seasonal cycle coincide with 2015/2016 ENSO and super IOD in 2020. During these events, enhanced (weakened) westerly winds caused fall (rise) of SLA and increase (decrease) of NPP in coastal regions along the northern SCS and that off eastern Vietnam. Overall, the a ph -based model shows a new perspective to study the spatiotemporal variations of NPP in the SCS.

Abstract:Satellite ocean color and sea surface temperature (SST) observations from 2012 to 2021 and sea surface salinity (SSS) measurements from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission from 2015 to 2021 are used to characterize and quantify the seasonal and interannual variability in the physical, optical, and biological sea surface features in the Costa Rica Thermal Dome (CRTD) region. High-resolution climatology and the seasonal variability in SST, SSS, and ocean color properties are produced. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration, SST, and SSS show these three properties are linked with similar spatial patterns and seasonal variations, i.e., elevated Chl-a concentrations, match the depressed SST and increased SSS and vice versa. This reflects that the physical driving force is the same for these three ocean properties and implies that nutrient supply associated with the physical processes is the major driver for the seasonal biological variability. The interannual changes in Chl-a, SST, and SSS also show that these three ocean properties are consistent among themselves. The positive (negative) Chl-a anomaly generally occurs with negative (positive) SST anomaly and enhanced (reduced) SSS. The in situ measurements evidently show that the subsurface ocean dynamics in the upper 100 m controls the sea surface variability for Chl-a, SST, and SSS. We report that no significant enhancement of Chl-a is observed in the CRTD region during the central Pacific (CP)-type 2020–2021 La Niña event, while Chl-a changes are significant in the other three of four ENSO events between 2012 and 2021. Furthermore, the difference in Chl-a variability driven by the CP-type ENSO and eastern Pacific (EP)-type ENSO is further discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The impacts of El Niño on sea surface salinity (SSS) in the South China Sea (SCS) are investigated using satellite observations, in-situ data, and reanalysis products. Here, we show that positive SSS anomalies cover most of the SCS during the mature phase of El Niño. The physical processes controlling these positive SSS anomalies are different from region to region, and the differences are especially obvious between the northern and southern SCS. In the northern SCS, the positive SSS anomalies are primarily caused by horizontal advection in response to an enhanced Kuroshio intrusion through the Luzon Strait, while changes in surface freshwater fluxes act to reduce SSS. In the southern SCS, the positive SSS anomalies are largely due to reduced surface freshwater fluxes, with ocean dynamics playing a secondary role. An anomalous anticyclone associated with El Niño is mainly responsible for the reduction of surface freshwater fluxes in the southern SCS.
