Abstract:Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in air and seawater were investigated from the Northwestern Pacific to the Arctic Ocean. The concentration of Σ11OPEs in air and seawater ranged from 231.56 to 1884.25 pg/m3 and from 8.47 to 143.45 ng/L, respectively. Halogenated OPEs dominated in both two media. The slight decreasing trend was observed for OPEs in gaseous air, no obvious trend for particle-bound OPEs and in seawater. The net air-seawater exchange flux ranged from −792.68 to 590.29 pg/m2/day. The dry deposition flux ranged from 13.64 to 94.17 ng/m2/day with high value observed at the Bering Strait (64.70 ng/m2/day). The relationship between temperature and OPEs particle-bound fractions suggests that temperature might be a driving factor of OPEs long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT). This research highlighted that OPEs are subject to LRAT from the Asian continent to the northwestern Pacific and Arctic Oceans and demonstrated the "sink" in polar regions of OPEs atmospheric transportation.

Abstract:The presence of organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants and plasticizers in surface sediment from the North Pacific to Arctic Ocean was observed for the first time during the fourth National Arctic Research Expedition of China in the summer of 2010. The samples were analyzed for three halogenated OPEs [tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), and tris(dichloroisopropyl) phosphate], three alkylated OPEs [triisobutyl phosphate (TiBP), tri-n-butyl phosphate, and tripentyl phosphate], and triphenyl phosphate. Σ7OPEs (total concentration of the observed OPEs) was in the range of 159-4658 pg/g of dry weight. Halogenated OPEs were generally more abundant than the nonhalogenated OPEs; TCEP and TiBP dominated the overall concentrations. Except for that of the Bering Sea, Σ7OPEs values increased with increasing latitudes from Bering Strait to the Central Arctic Ocean, while the contributions of halogenated OPEs (typically TCEP and TCPP) to the total OPE profile also increased from the Bering Strait to the Central Arctic Ocean, indicating they are more likely to be transported to the remote Arctic. The median budget of 52 (range of 17-292) tons for Σ7OPEs in sediment from the Central Arctic Ocean represents only a very small amount of their total production volume, yet the amount of OPEs in Arctic Ocean sediment was significantly larger than the sum of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the sediment, indicating they are equally prone to long-range transport away from source regions. Given the increasing level of production and usage of OPEs as substitutes of PBDEs, OPEs will continue to accumulate in the remote Arctic.
Distribution patterns and origins of organophosphate esters in soils from different climate systems on the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are extensively applied in various materials as flame retardants and plasticizers, and have high biological toxicity. OPEs are detected worldwide, even in distant polar regions and the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, few studies have been performed to evaluate the distribution patterns and origins of OPEs in different climate systems on the TP. This study investigated the distribution characteristics, possible sources, and ecological risks of OPEs in soils from the different climate systems on the TP and its surroundings. The total concentrations of OPEs in soil varied from 468 to 17,451 pg g-1 dry weight, with greater concentrations in southeast Tibet (monsoon zone), followed by Qinghai (transition zone) and, finally, southern Xingjiang (westerly zone). OPE composition profiles also differed among the three areas with tri-n-butyl phosphate dominant in the westerly zone and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate dominant in the Indian monsoon zone. Correlations between different compounds and altitude, soil organic carbon, or longitude varied in different climate zones, indicating that OPE distribution originates from both long-range atmospheric transport and local emissions. Ecological risk assessment showed that tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and tri-phenyl phosphate exhibited medium risks in soil at several sites in southeast Tibet. Considering the sensitivity and vulnerability of TP ecosystems to anthropogenic pollutants, the ecological risks potentially caused by OPEs in this region should be further assessed.

Abstract:Despite growing concerns regarding the long-range transport (LRT) and ecological risks of organophosphate esters (OPEs), information on the environmental behaviors of OPEs in polar terrestrial ecosystems remains inadequate. In the present study, 10 OPEs were analyzed in soil and vegetation samples collected from Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica. The OPE concentrations in Antarctic soils, mosses, and lichens ranged from 0.87 to 15.7 ng/g dry weight (dw), 9.8 to 113 ng/g dw, and 3.6 to 75.2 ng/g dw, respectively. Non-chlorinated OPEs predominated in terrestrial matrices, accounting for approximately 76 % of the OPE composition. Source identification indicated that OPE contamination in Antarctica likely resulted from local anthropogenic sources and LRT. Moreover, the bioaccumulation behavior of OPEs from soil to vegetation was assessed using bioconcentration factors (BCFs), revealing a significant non-linear trend of initial increase and subsequent decrease in BCFs relative to the lipophilicities of the octanol-air partition coefficient (log KOA) and octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW). While low levels of OPEs in Antarctic terrestrial environments were reported in this study, their sustained inputs and potential ecological risks in polar regions warrant further attention.

Abstract:Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the air and seawater were investigated from the northwestern Pacific Ocean to the Southern Ocean during the 2018 Chinese 34th Antarctic Scientific Expedition. The concentration of total OPEs ranged from 164.82 to 3501.79 pg/m3 in air and from 4.54 to 70.09 ng/L in seawater. Two halogenated OPEs, tri(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) and tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), were generally more abundant than the non-halogenated OPEs. A level III fugacity model was developed to simulate the transfer and fate of seven OPEs in the air and seawater regions of the central Ross Sea. The model results indicate that OPEs are transferred from the air to the seawater in the central Ross Sea in summer, during which the Ross Sea acts as a final OPE sink. Dry and wet deposition dominated the processes involving OPE transfer to seawater. The OPE degradation process was also found to be more pervasive in the atmosphere than in the seawater region. These findings highlights the importance of long-range transport of OPEs and their air–seawater interface behavior in the Antarctic.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are a class of emerging and ubiquitous contaminants that are attracting increasing attention, and their large-scale use as flame retardants and plasticizers has led to their pervasive presence in the environment, although their broader impacts remain unknown. In this study, 11 OPEs were measured in the atmosphere of Southeast Asia and Southwest China during 2016. The ∑11OPEs were higher in this region (78.0-1670 pg/m3, mean 458 pg/m3) than in many remote areas, lower than in developed regions, and comparable to levels in many developing country cities. Generally, the ∑11OPEs were higher in urban (105-1670 pg/m3, mean 538 pg/m3) than in suburban (78.0-1350 pg/m3, mean 388 pg/m3). Seasonal variations of OPEs in the air were more pronounced in Cambodia and Laos, especially for Triphenyl Phosphate (TPHP). Seasonal variations of ∑11OPEs in most regions correspond to changes in temperature and rainfall. Biomass burning may be also a factor in facilitating OPE emissions from biomass materials or soil into the atmosphere of Southeast Asia. The random forest analysis showed that among these, rainfall had the greatest effect on the seasonal variation of atmospheric OPE concentrations, followed by biomass burning and temperature. The inter-regional variation of ∑11OPEs in Southeast Asia was related to population and economic development in each region. Airflow trajectories indicated that the OPEs in this region were mainly from local sources. The health risk assessment revealed that the inhalation exposure risks of OPEs to the residents in the study areas were very low during the sampling period, but may be increasing.
Occurrence and human exposure assessment of organophosphate esters in atmospheric PM2.5 in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, China

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) in atmospheric fine particles (PM2.5) were comprehensively investigated in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region from April 2016 to March 2017. The concentrations of Σ8OPEs in all the five sampling sites ranged from 90 to 8291 pg/m3 (mean 1148 ± 1239 pg/m3; median 756 pg/m3). The highest level (median 1067 pg/m3) was found at one of the urban sites in Beijing, followed by Tianjin (746 pg/m3) and Shijiazhuang (724 pg/m3). Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tri[(2R)-1-chloro-2-propyl] phosphate (TCPP) were the dominant compounds across the five sampling locations. Generally, the concentrations of chlorinated OPEs were relatively higher in summer than in winter (p < 0.05), but no significant seasonal difference was discovered for non-chlorinated individual OPEs. The concentrations of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), TCEP, TCPP and triphenyl phosphate (TPP) were positively correlated with the meteorological parameters (i.e. temperature and relative humidity) (p < 0.05), indicating an evident influence of meteorological condition on OPE distribution. We observed a negative correlation (p < 0.05) between octanol-air partition coefficients (logKoa) and the ratio of PM2.5-bound OPE concentrations to total suspended particulates-bound OPE concentrations, suggesting that physicochemical properties affect the particle-size distribution of OPEs. Furthermore, the median value of cancer hazard quotients (HQs) of TCEP was higher than TBP and tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP). The health risk assessment showed that HQ values for children were ~1.6 times higher than those for adults. Relatively higher health risk induced by PM2.5-bound OPEs via inhalation was found during severe hazy days than in clear days.

Abstract:Sixty-eight paired samples of urban surface dust and soil as well as four samples of atmospheric dustfall were collected from the arid city of Urumqi in Northwest China. Thirteen organophosphate esters (OPEs) in these samples were analyzed for the characteristics, sources, bio-accessibility, and health risks of OPEs. The studied OPEs were widely detected in the urban surface dust, soil, and dustfall, with Σ13OPEs (total concentration of 13 OPEs) of 1362, 164.0, and 1367 ng/g, respectively, dominated by tris(2-chloroethyle) phosphate (TCEP), tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCiPP), tri(1, 3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (TDCiPP) and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), TBOEP and tri(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), and TCEP, TCiPP, TBOEP, triphenyl phosphate and TEHP, respectively. The low and high frequency magnetic susceptibility of surface dust and urban soil might indicate the pollution of OPEs in them. Elevated levels of the Σ13OPEs in the surface dust and urban soil were found in the west, south, and northeast of Urumqi city. The total deposition flux of dustfall-bound 13 OPEs ranged from 86.5 to 143 ng/m 2 /day, with a mean of 105 ng/m 2 /day. OPEs in the surface dust and urban soil were associated with the emissions of indoor and outdoor products containing OPEs, the dry and wet deposition of atmosphere, and the emissions of traffic. Trimethyl phosphate, triethyl phosphate, tripropyl phosphate, tri-isobutyl phosphate, TCEP, TCiPP, TDCiPP, and TBOEP in surface dust and urban soil had relatively high bio-accessibility. The bio-accessibility of OPEs was mainly affected by the physio-chemical properties of OPEs. The non-cancer and cancer risks of human exposure to OPEs in surface dust and urban soil were relatively low or negligible. The current research results may provide scientific supports for prevention and control of pollution and risks of OPEs.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) in surface soil of four different functional areas in Chongqing were identified and quantified using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF-MS). The composition and characteristics of OPEs were discussed along with the relationships between soil organic matter (SOM) and OPEs through correlation analysis, and possible sources of OPEs were simultaneously investigated through principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that the concentrations of ∑OPEs ranged from 10.7 to 108 ng·g-1 dry weight, with a mean concentration of 46.4 ng·g-1, which was at the low-level end of the global figure. The average concentration was 55.6 ng·g-1 in the industrial area, 55.5 ng·g-1 in the residential area, 41.8 ng·g-1 in the commercial area, and 34.1 ng·g-1 in the city park. Tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) and 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) were dominant compounds, contributing up to 31.5% in the industrial area for TCPP and 23.4% and 24.7% in the commercial area and city park, respectively, for EHDPP. Significant relationships between concentrations of SOM and ∑OPEs (P<0.05) and tricresyl phosphate (TCP) (P<0.01), respectively, indicated that SOM was a factor affecting the concentration and distribution of the OPEs. The PCA suggested that there were multiple sources of OPEs in urban soil. Sewage irrigation, road runoff, indoor source pollution, and sludge reuse could be potential sources of soil OPEs.
Spatial heterogeneity, sediment-water exchange, and diffusion mechanisms of organophosphate esters from river to coastal aquatic system in a typical economic circle of northern China

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have proven to be pervasive in aquatic environments globally. However, understanding their partitioning behavior and mechanisms at the sediment-water interface remains limited. This study elucidated the spatial heterogeneity, interfacial exchange, and diffusion mechanisms of 14 OPEs (∑14OPEs) from river to coastal aquatic system. The transport tendencies of OPEs at the sediment-water interface were quantitatively assessed using fugacity methods. The total ∑14OPEs concentrations in water and sediments ranged from 154 ng/L to 528 ng/L and 2.41 ng/g dry weight (dw) to 230 ng/g dw, respectively. This result indicated a descending spatial tendency with moderate variability. OPE distribution was primarily influenced by temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen levels. As the carbon atom number increased, alkyl and chlorinated OPEs transitioned from diffusion towards the aqueous phase to equilibrium. In contrast, aryl OPEs and triphenylphosphine oxide, which had equivalent carbon atom counts, maintained equilibrium throughout. Diffusion trends of individual OPE congener at the sediment-water interface varied at the same total organic carbon contents (foc). As the foc increased, the fugacity fraction values for all OPE homologs showed a declining trend. The distinct molecular structure of each OPE monomer might lead to unique diffusive behaviors at the sediment-water interface. Higher soot carbon content had a more pronounced effect on the distribution patterns of OPEs. The sediment-water distribution of OPEs was primarily influenced by total organic carbon, sediment particle size, dry density, and moisture content. OPEs displayed the highest sensitivity to fluctuations in ammonium and dissolved organic carbon. This study holds significant scientific and theoretical implications for elucidating the interfacial transport and driving forces of OPEs and comprehending their fate and endogenous release in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used flame retardants that are frequently released into the environment, causing potential harm to humans and ecosystems. Tibet is located on the Tibetan Plateau, known as the "roof of the world", but the occurrence of OPEs in Tibet remains unclear. This is the first report of the occurrence, potential sources and risks of 12 OPEs in water, soil, sediment and snow from Xainza, a typical town at high-elevation in Tibet (average elevation = 4700 m). Ten OPEs were observed, with ∑OPE concentrations of 46.45-1744.73 ng/L in surface water, 29.74-73.85 ng/g in soil, and 13.30-32.23 ng/g in sediment. Moreover, the mean ∑OPE concentration in snow was 413.90 ng/L. Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) were the main OPEs in surface water and snow, while 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) was dominant in soil and sediment. Local human activities and long-distance atmospheric transport may be the main sources of OPEs in Xainza. The assessment of ecological risk indicated that EHDPP in soil poses potential risk. The occurrence of OPEs in Xainza showed that more attention should be paid to persistent organic pollutants in high-elevation regions.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are man-made organic pollutants that are used in flame retardants (FRs), plasticizers, antifoaming and hydraulic agents, and extractants. The demand for FRs in China has increased, thereby rapidly increasing the use of OPEs and hence resulted in its high levels in the environment. In this study, we measured the concentrations of seven OPE congeners in the seawaters of the Bohai Sea (BS), the Yellow Sea (YS), and the East China Sea (ECS). The horizontal and vertical spatial distributions were then analyzed to assess the OPE pollution. The total concentrations of the seven OPE congeners (ΣOPEs) in the three seas ranged from 7.31 to 100 ng L−1. The main OPE compounds were tris-(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP, 3.97–35.6 ng L−1), tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP, 0.59–19.8 ng L−1), and triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO, from below the detection limit to 43.5 ng L−1). The inventory of the ΣOPEs in the BS, YS, and ECS was estimated as 54.2, 513, and 3950 tons, respectively. Horizontally, the ΣOPE concentration was ranked as BS > YS > ECS. In the vertical direction, the OPE concentrations in the surface water were higher than those in the bottom water. Ocean currents and riverine inputs might be the main factors influencing the distributions of the OPEs in these seas. Moreover, a seasonal variation (summer 2015 versus winter 2016) in the OPEs was observed in the YS, which was probably due to anthropogenic influences and hydrological, meteorological, and biological factors.

Abstract:The environmental load of organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants has caused a series of problems due to their extensive use. The soil matrix, as an ultimate sink for organic pollution, plays a vital part in the fate of OPEs in the environment. In this study, the spatial occurrence, composition profile and health risk of 13 OPE species in farmland soils from four provinces of China were characterized. Excluding tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate (TDBPP) and ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), the remaining eleven OPEs had a high detection frequency (DF) ranging from 60% to 100%. The range of total OPE (ΣOPE) concentrations were 62.3-394 ng/g dry weight (dw), with a median of 228 ng/g dw. Among these OPEs, tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) with a median of 143 ng/g dw) was the predominant species, followed by tricresyl phosphate (TCP; median of 20.1 ng/g dw) and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP; median of 17.9 ng/g dw). In terms of geographical distribution, significantly lower OPEs levels were found in samples from Heilongjiang (159±47.0 ng/g dw) than in those of Guangxi (264±66.0 ng/g dw), Henan (252±74.5 ng/g dw) and Hubei (242±52.8 ng/g dw) provinces. Principal component analysis and Spearman's correlations were used to reveal potential sources of OPEs in the different provincial regions. Health risk exposure to OPEs in farmland soils was at an acceptable level (<1.20×10−5 for non-carcinogenic risk to children as the most sensitive age group; and <6.47×10−10 for carcinogenic risk to adults as the most sensitive age group) at the present detected concentrations. However, TCEP and TEHP, the predominant risk contributors, should be paid more attention.

Abstract:Concentrations of 11 organophosphate esters (OPEs) were investigated in surface water and atmosphere samples collected from the South Pacific and Fildes Peninsula. TEHP and TCEP were the dominant OPEs in South Pacific dissolved water, with concentration range of nd-106.13 ng/L and 1.06-28.97 ng/L, respectively. The total concentration of ∑10OPEs in the South Pacific atmosphere was higher than that in Fildes Peninsula, ranging from 216.78 to 2033.97 pg/m3 and 161.83 pg/m3, respectively. TCEP and TCPP were the most dominant OPEs in the South Pacific atmosphere, while TPhP was the most prevalent in the Fildes Peninsula. The air-water exchange flux of ∑10OPEs at the South Pacific was 0.04-3.56 ng/m2/day, with a transmission direction of evaporation totally determined by TiBP and TnBP. The atmospheric dry deposition dominated the transport direction of OPEs between air and water, with an flux of Σ10OPEs at 10.28-213.62 ng/m2/day (mean: 85.2 ng/m2/day). The current transport flux of OPEs through the Tasman Sea to the ACC (2.65 × 104 kg/day) was significantly higher than the dry deposition flux over the Tasman Sea(493.55 kg/day), indicating the Tasman Sea's importance as a transport pathway for OPEs from low latitude areas to the South Pacific. Principal component analysis and air mass back-trajectory analysis provided evidence of terrestrial inputs from human activities that have impacted the environment in the South Pacific and the Antarctic.

Abstract:The presence of 14 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in surface sediments from a typical fishing port agglomeration in Dalian, North China was investigated for the first time. Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO), and tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) dominated 12 detectable OPEs (∑OPEs), with concentrations ranging widely from 0.56 to 352 ng/g (dry weight basis). The ∑OPE levels in sediments varied significantly across fishing harbors of various grades, and within the same grade, highlighting uneven distribution of OPE sources and inputs to harbors. The first- and second-class fishing harbors had higher geometric mean of ∑OPE contents compared to center and natural harbors, reflecting higher OPE pollution in these areas. Although there were significant correlations among the OPE congeners with high detection frequencies, the composition patterns of sediment OPEs varied considerably among fishing ports. The sediments in the center and first-class harbors had higher abundance of non-chlorinated OPEs (non-Cl-OPEs), suggesting heterogeneity in source strength and pollution characteristics of Cl- and non-Cl-OPEs in fishing ports. The distribution of OPEs in sediments was weakly associated with sediment organic carbon, but not socioeconomic variables, indicating complex controlling factors of their distributions in port sediments. The ecological risks of sediment OPEs were evaluated, and while OPE accumulations ranged broadly (7–684 ng/cm2), exposure hazards were negligible. The sediments in first- and second-class fishing harbors, which had greater OPE accumulation, were identified as reservoirs of OPEs in port aquatic environments.

Abstract:Our intent is to compare the SAGE III limb scattering (LS) data to other instruments measuring similar ozone profiles. Comparisons made show an agreement in the mean ozone profile between SAGE III and OSIRIS LS measurements. Similar comparisons show an agreement between SAGE III and SOLSE/LORE data. Both comparisons show an accuracy and precision of relatively ten percent. The quality and accuracy of the SAGE III LS measurements can be assessed after the additional data becomes available

Abstract:Four organophosphorus esters (OPEs) were detected in aerosol samples collected in the West Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean from 2009 to 2010, suggesting their circumpolar and global distribution. In general, the highest concentrations were detected near populated regions in China, Australia and New Zealand. OPE concentrations in the Southern Ocean were about two orders of magnitude lower than those near major continents. Additionally, relatively high OPE concentrations were detected at the Antarctic Peninsula, where several scientific survey stations are located. The four OPEs investigated here are significantly correlated with each other, suggesting they may derive from the same source. In the circumpolar transect, OPE concentrations were associated with ocean gyres in the open ocean. Their concentrations were positively related with average vorticity in the sampling area suggesting that a major source of OPEs may be found in ocean gyres where plastic debris is known to accumulate.

Abstract:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are still produced and used in large quantities in the world-wide, and the environmental burden and behavior have generated widespread concern, especially in some large-scale waterbodies. This study conducted a comprehensive assessment on the temporal and spatial variabilities and budget of OPEs to trace the source for the Bohai Sea (BS), based on a 5-year seasonal monitoring campaign (June 2014 to May 2019) of 12 atmospheric sites around the BS and our previous studies. The average concentration of Σ10OPEs in atmosphere during the sampling period was 7.65 ± 6.42 ng m-3, and chlorinated OPEs were the major compounds. The Seasonal-Trend decomposition procedure based on Loess (STL) analyzed that during the 5-year sampling period, the atmospheric concentrations of Σ10OPEs had a slightly increasing trend with a rate of + 0.092 ng m-3 yr-1, and the seasonal concentrations had a distinct seasonal distribution. The highest concentration of Σ10OPEs was observed at the sampling site of Dalian, followed by Tianjin, Yantai, and Beihuangcheng. The estimation of the fugacity ratios and air-water gas exchange fluxes established that the concentration levels of two major components of chlorinated OPEs (tris-(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and tris-(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP)) in the atmosphere were dominated by their volatilization from BS's seawater (1.24 ± 0.46 t yr-1 for TCEP and 5.15 ± 2.15 t yr-1 for TCPP), with 73% deriving from the coastal seawater. The budget assessment suggested that the volatile fluxes of TCEP and TCPP accounted for 8% and 29% of their storages (15.6 ± 5.32 t for TCEP and 17.6 ± 6.70 t for TCPP) in the BS seawater, which were mainly contributed by continental river input (20% for TCEP and 42% for TCPP). The efforts indicated that river inputs of TCEP and TCPP needed to be paid more attention for the improvement of environmental quality of the BS.

Abstract:The distribution characteristics, sources, and risk levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in Ny-Ålesund of the Arctic region during China's 10th Arctic expedition were studied in this paper. Results showed that the concentration of OCPs in the surface soil of the Ny-Ålesund region ranged from 0.59 ng·g−1 to 3.87 ng·g−1, with an average concentration of 2.22 ng·g−1. Source analysis showed that the OCPs in the study area mainly originated from historical residues, and a certain degree of conversion between congeners of hexachlorocyclohexanes and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes in the soil occurred due to environmental factors. Ecological risk assessment indicated that the study area was at a low ecological risk level, but the potential environmental impact of OCPs could not be neglected due to the specificity and sensitivity of the Arctic environment.
