Abstract:ShenMai Injection (SMI) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been extensively applied in the treatment of coronary artery disease and tumor for many years. However, there is still lack of deep research on the behaviors of SMI in vivo. In this study, a reliable, specific, and sensitive method was developed for simultaneous determination of sixteen saponins found in SMI using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This method was successfully applied to investigate the pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution and excretion of sixteen active compounds after a single intravenous administration of SMI. These compounds included seven protopapaxdiol (PPD-type) ginsenosides (ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, Rb3, Rc, Rd, S-Rg3, R-Rg3), six protopapaxtriol (PPT-type) ginsenosides (notoginsenoside R1, ginsenosides Re, Rf, Rg1, S-Rg2, R-Rg2), one oleanolic acid type ginsenoside (ginsenoside Ro) and two ophiopogonins (ophiopogonin D (MD-D) and ophiopogonin D' (MD-D')). Connection of the C-20 hydroxyl group to the glycoside and the chiral configuration of C-20 might significantly impact the pharmacokinetic behaviors in vivo of ginsenosides, particularly PPD-type ginsenosides. PPD-type ginsenosides were usually eliminated slowly in serum and tissues, but S/R-Rg3 bearing a free hydroxyl group at C-20 exhibited quick elimination, and R-Rg3 underwent quicker elimination than S-Rg3. The PPT-type ginsenosides, oleanolic acid type ginsenoside and ophiopogonins underwent a fast elimination from serum and tissues. There were 10 ginsenosides that could penetrate the blood-brain barrier. In contrast to other saponins, the distributions of S-Rg2, R-Rg2, S-Rg3, R-Rg3, MD-D and MD-D' in liver were higher than in kidney. Several PPD-type ginsenosides were found to have a long-term accumulation risk in some tissues, especially Rd in kidney. In the excretion study, Rg1, S-Rg2 and MD-D were mainly excreted in a prototype and other saponins were mainly excreted in the form of metabolites. Prototypes of S-Rg2, R-Rg2, S-Rg3, R-Rg3, MD-D and MD-D' exhibited higher distribution in the liver than kidney, were excreted mainly in the feces, whereas prototypes of the remaining saponins were primarily excreted via urine. To best our knowledge, this is the first study to quantitatively evaluate the tissue distribution and excretion of SMI in rats. Our research provides novel insight into the behaviors in vivo of PPD-type ginsenosides and delivers valuable information for further drug development of SMI.

Abstract:Soy consumption has been associated with many potential health benefits in reducing chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, insulin-resistance/type II diabetes, certain type of cancers, and immune disorders. These physiological functions have been attributed to soy proteins either as intact soy protein or more commonly as functional or bioactive peptides derived from soybean processing. These findings have led to the approval of a health claim in the USA regarding the ability of soy proteins in reducing the risk for coronary heart disease and the acceptance of a health claim in Canada that soy protein can help lower cholesterol levels. Using different approaches, many soy bioactive peptides that have a variety of physiological functions such as hypolipidemic, anti-hypertensive, and anti-cancer properties, and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects have been identified. Some soy peptides like lunasin and soymorphins possess more than one of these properties and play a role in the prevention of multiple chronic diseases. Overall, progress has been made in understanding the functional and bioactive components of soy. However, more studies are required to further identify their target organs, and elucidate their biological mechanisms of action in order to be potentially used as functional foods or even therapeutics for the prevention or treatment of chronic diseases.

Abstract:Soybeans and their food products exist in the market in various forms, ranging from crude oils and bean meals to nutritious products (e.g. soy milk powers). With the availability of technologies for mass production of soy products and for enrichment of soy components (e.g. phospholipids, saponins, isoflavones, oligosaccharides and edible fiber), the nutritional values of soy products have been enhanced remarkably, offering the potential for functional food development. Among different bioactive components in soybeans, one important component is isoflavones, which have been widely exploited for health implications. While there are studies supporting the health benefits of isoflavones, concerns on adverse effects have been raised in the literature. The objective of this article is to review the recent understanding of the biological activities, adverse effects, and use of isoflavones in functional food development.

Abstract:Saponins are bioactive compounds of increasing interest. The events that take place during digestion are highly related to their bioactivities, because saponins are poorly absorbed and have a long residence time in the intestinal tract. The poor bioavailability of saponins is explained by a sum of factors, but the more favorable properties of sapogenins result in higher bioavailability and bioactivity. The gastric and colonic transformations of saponins are relevant in the release of sapogenins. Saponins inhibit enzymes and cholesterol absorption, but specific chemical structures of saponins are relevant for an efficient activity. Finally, the recent research has pointed to saponins as “prebiotic-like” compounds. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the events that take place during digestion of saponins and sapogenins related to their bioactivities, with special emphasis on the factors that modulate their bioavailability, bioaccessibility, inhibition of digestive enzymes and cholesterol absorption, and the importance of the microbiota-saponins relationship.

Abstract:<p>Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a series of symptoms including insulin resistance, obesity, dyslipidemia, elevated fasting blood glucose levels, and hepatic steatosis. As a key criterion in MetS, the onset of insulin resistance is related to abnormal levels of circulating free fatty acids and adipokines. It has been discovered in recent years that metabolites and pathogen-associated molecular patterns of intestinal/gut microbiota are also important factors that cause insulin resistance and MetS. Saponins are the main components of many botanicals and traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), such as ginseng, platycodon, licorice, and alfalfa. They have poor bioavailability, but can be transformed into secondary glycosides and aglycones by intestinal microbiota, further being absorbed. Based on in vivo and in vitro data, we found that saponins and their secondary metabolites have a preventive effect on MetS, and the effective targets are distributed in the intestine and other organs in human body. Intestinal targets involve pancreatic lipase, dietary cholesterol, and intestinal microbiota. Other targets include central appetite, nuclear receptors such as PPAR and LXR, AMPK signaling pathway and adipokines levels, etc. In view of the poor bioavailability of saponins, it is inferred that targets for prototype-saponins to interfere with MetS is mainly located in the intestine, and the activation of other targets may be related to secondary glycosides and aglycones transformed from saponins by intestinal flora. We suggest that the role of intestinal microbiota in saponin intervention in MetS should be further investigated.</p>

Abstract:BACKGROUND Idiopathic sclerochoroidal calcification (ISC) is an unusual, benign disorder occurring at the level of the posterior choroidea and sclera. Clinical differential diagnosis includes choroidal osteoma, choroidal metastasis, choroidal melanoma, choroidal amelanotic naevus and choroiditis. PATIENT A 61-year old man was referred with the diagnosis of multifocal choroidal tumor in both eyes. Fundoscopy showed bilateral yellow lesions located near the superotemporal arcade. RESULTS Fluorescein angiography shows the late staining of the choroidal lesions. Ultrasonographically highly reflective lesions (sclerochoroidal placoid lesions at the sclero-choroidal interface in the CT) confirms the clinical diagnosis. The serum calcium and phosphate metabolism is normal. CONCLUSION The Idiopathic Sclerochoroidal Calcification (ISC) is a rare echographical differential diagnosis to the choroidal osteoma. ISC is a heterotopic calcification of the posterior pole in both eyes, usually located near the superotemporal arcade.
Integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses revealed the distribution of saponins in Panax notoginseng

Abstract:Panax notoginseng is famous for its important therapeutic effects. Saponins are bioactive compounds found in different parts and developmental stages of P. notoginseng plants. Thus, it is urgently to study saponins distribution in different parts and growth ages of P. notoginseng plants. In this study, potential biomarkers were found, and their chemical characteristic differences were revealed through metabolomic analysis. High-performance liquid chromatography data indicated the higher content of saponins (i.e., Rg1, Re, Rd, and Rb1) in the underground parts than that in the aerial parts. 20(S)-Protopanaxadiol saponins were mainly distributed in the aerial parts. Additionally, the total saponin content in the 3-year-old P. notoginseng plant (188.0 mg/g) was 1.4-fold higher than that in 2-year-old plant (130.5 mg/g). The transcriptomic analysis indicated the tissue-specific transcription expression of genes, namely, PnFPS, PnSS, PnSE1, PnSE2, and PnDS, which encoded critical synthases in saponin biosyntheses. These genes showed similar expression patterns among the parts of P. notoginseng plants. The expression levels of these genes in the flowers and leaves were 5.2fold higher than that in the roots and fibrils. These results suggested that saponins might be actively synthesized in the aerial parts and transformed to the underground parts. This study provides insights into the chemical and genetic characteristics of P. notoginseng to facilitate the synthesis of its secondary metabolites and a scientific basis for appropriate collection and rational use of this plant.
Anti-Colon Cancer Activity of Dietary Phytochemical Soyasaponin I and the Induction of Metabolic Shifts in HCT116

Abstract:Dietary phytochemicals play an important role in the prevention and treatment of colon cancer. It is reported that group B of soyasaponin, derived from dietary pulses, has anti-colonic effects on some colon cancer cell lines. However, it is uncertain which specific soybean saponins play a role. In our study, as one of the group B soyasaponin, the anti-colon cancer activity of soyasaponins I (SsI) was screened, and we found that it had the inhibitory effect of proliferation on colon cancer cell lines HCT116 (IC50 = 161.4 μM) and LoVo (IC50 = 180.5 μM), but no effect on HT29 between 0–200 μM. Then, nine potential targets of SsI on colon cancer were obtained by network pharmacology analysis. A total of 45 differential metabolites were identified by metabolomics analysis, and the KEGG pathway was mainly enriched in the pathways related to the absorption and metabolism of amino acids. Finally, molecular docking analysis predicted that SsI might dock with the protein of DNMT1, ERK1. The results indicated that the effect of SsI on HCT116 might be exerted by influencing amino acid metabolism and the estrogen signaling pathway. This study may provide the possibility for the application of SsI against colon cancer.

Abstract:Overnutrition with a high-fat or high-sugar diet is widely considered to be the risk factor for various metabolic, chronic, or malignant diseases that are accompanied by alterations in gut microbiota, metabolites, and downstream pathways. In this study, we investigated supplementation with soybean fermentation broth containing saponin (SFBS, also called SAPOZYME) in male C57BL/6 mice fed a high-fat-fructose diet or normal chaw. In addition to the lessening of weight gain, the influence of SFBS on reducing hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia associated with a high-fat-fructose diet was estimated using the results of related biological tests. The results of gut microbial profiling indicated that the high-fat-fructose diet mediated increases in opportunistic pathogens. In contrast, SFBS supplementation reprogrammed the high-fat-fructose diet-related microbial community with a relatively high abundance of potential probiotics, including Akkermansia and Lactobacillus genera. The metagenomic functions of differential microbial composition in a mouse model and enrolled participants were assessed using the PICRUSt2 algorithm coupled with the MetaCyc and the KEGG Orthology databases. SFBS supplementation exerted a similar influence on an increase in the level of 4-aminobutanoate (also called GABA) through the L-glutamate degradation pathway in the mouse model and the enrolled healthy population. These results suggest the beneficial influence of SFBS supplementation on metabolic disorders associated with a high-fat-fructose diet, and SFBS may function as a nutritional supplement for people with diverse requirements.

Abstract:Soybeans are rich in proteins and lipids and have become a staple part of the human diet. Besides their nutritional excellence, they have also been shown to contain various functional components, including isoflavones, and have consequently received increasing attention as a functional food item. Isoflavones are structurally similar to 17-β-estradiol and bind to estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ). The estrogenic activity of isoflavones ranges from a hundredth to a thousandth of that of estrogen itself. Isoflavones play a role in regulating the effects of estrogen in the human body, depending on the situation. Thus, when estrogen is insufficient, isoflavones perform the functions of estrogen, and when estrogen is excessive, isoflavones block the estrogen receptors to which estrogen binds, thus acting as an estrogen antagonist. In particular, estrogen antagonistic activity is important in the breast, endometrium, and prostate, and such antagonistic activity suppresses cancer occurrence. Genistein, an isoflavone, has cancer-suppressing effects on estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) cancers, including breast cancer. It suppresses the function of enzymes such as tyrosine protein kinase, mitogen-activated kinase, and DNA polymerase II, thus inhibiting cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis. Genistein is the most biologically active and potent isoflavone candidate for cancer prevention. Furthermore, among the various physiological functions of isoflavones, they are best known for their antioxidant activities. S-Equol, a metabolite of genistein and daidzein, has strong antioxidative effects; however, the ability to metabolize daidzein into S-equol varies based on racial and individual differences. The antioxidant activity of isoflavones may be effective in preventing dementia by inhibiting the phosphorylation of Alzheimer’s-related tau proteins. Genistein also reduces allergic responses by limiting the expression of mast cell IgE receptors, which are involved in allergic responses. In addition, they have been known to prevent and treat various diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndromes, osteoporosis, diabetes, brain-related diseases, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and inflammation. Further, it also has positive effects on menstrual irregularity in non-menopausal women and relieving menopausal symptoms in middle-aged women. Recently, soybean consumption has shown steep increasing trend in Western countries where the intake was previously only 1/20–1/50 of that in Asian countries. In this review, Ihave dealt with the latest research trends that have shown substantial interest in the biological efficacy of isoflavones in humans and plants, and their related mechanisms.
Soy-Induced Fecal Metabolome Changes in Ovariectomized and Intact Female Rats: Relationship with Cardiometabolic Health

Abstract:Phytoestrogens are plant-derived compounds found in a variety of foods, most notably, soy. These compounds have been shown to improve immuno-metabolic health, yet mechanisms remain uncertain. We demonstrated previously that dietary phytoestrogen-rich soy (SOY) rescued metabolic dysfunction/inflammation following ovariectomy (OVX) in female rats; we also noted remarkable shifts in gut microbiota in SOY vs control diet-fed rats. Importantly, specific bacteria that significantly increased in those fed the SOY correlated positively with several favorable host metabolic parameters. One mechanism by which gut microbes might lead to such host effects is through production of bacterial metabolites. To test this possibility, we utilized non-targeted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) to assess the fecal metabolome in those previously studied animals. Partial least square discriminant analysis (PLSDA) revealed clear separation of fecal metabolomes based on diet and ovarian state. In particular, SOY-fed animals had greater fecal concentrations of the beneficial bacterial metabolite, S-equol, which was positively associated with several of the bacteria upregulated in the SOY group. S-equol was inversely correlated with important indicators of metabolic dysfunction and inflammation, suggesting that this metabolite might be a key mediator between SOY and gut microbiome-positive host health outcomes.
Absorption, Disposition, and Pharmacokinetics of Saponins from Chinese Medicinal Herbs: What Do We Know and What Do We Need to Know More?

Abstract:Saponins are a group of amphiphilic glycosides containing one or more sugar chains linked to a nonpolar triterpene or steroid aglycone skeleton, which are believed to be responsible for the pharmacological activities of many Chinese medicinal herbs. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the contemporary knowledge of the absorption, disposition, and pharmacokinetics of some important saponins, including ginsenosides, licorice saponins, dioscorea saponins, astragalosides, and saikosaponins. Poor intestinal absorption of saponins is mainly due to their unfavorable physicochemical traits, such as large molecular mass ( > 500 Da), high hydrogen-bonding capacity ( > 12), and high molecular flexibility ( > 10), that underlie poor membrane permeability. Rapid and extensive biliary excretion is another primary factor that limits the oral bioavailability of most saponins. However, several saponins, including ginsenosides Ra3, Rb1, Rc, and Rd, and dioscin, are excreted slowly into the bile and in turn have significantly long elimination half lives (7-25 h in rats). These longcirculating saponins may be used as pharmacokinetic markers to substantiate systemic exposure to the ingested herb extracts. In addition to biliary excretion for elimination of most saponins unchanged, renal excretion may also be important for certain saponins. Saponins can be hydrolyzed by the colonic microflora. After absorption, the deglycosylated aglycones undergo phase I and/or II metabolism by the host. In line with the poor permeability, saponin concentrations in most rat tissues are lower than the concurrent plasma level and the brain level is usually very low. However, the liver concentrations of many saponins, as well as the kidney levels of certain saponins, can be quite high, which involves transporter-mediated uptake mechanisms. Repeated p.o. ingestion of glycyrrhizin appears to be able to induce CYP3A in rodents and humans, while several deglycosylated products of ginsenosides can moderately inhibit CYP activities in vitro with IC50 values of 10-50 μM. More research is required for elucidation of the absorption, disposition, and pharmacokinetics of multiple saponins to enhance understanding which saponins are most likely to exert pharmacological effects in vivo, as well as influence of complex herb matrix. In addition, research is also needed to characterize the microbiotal deglycosylation and the subsequent aglycone metabolism by the host for a broader range of saponins, as well as the hepatobiliary transporter phenotyping for and the interaction with saponins. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo studies of saponin-based herb-drug interactions are also warranted.

Abstract:Nowadays, notwithstanding their nutritional and technological properties, food bioactive peptides from plant sources garner increasing attention for their ability to impart more than one beneficial effect on human health. Legumes, which stand out thanks to their high protein content, represent valuable sources of bioactive peptides. In this context, this study focused on the characterization of the potential pleotropic activity of two commercially available soybean (SH) and pea (PH) protein hydrolysates, respectively. Since the biological activity of a specific protein hydrolysate is strictly correlated with its chemical composition, the first aim of the study was to identify the compositions of the SH and PH peptides. Peptidomic analysis revealed that most of the identified peptides within both mixtures belong to storage proteins. Interestingly, according to the BIOPEP-UWM database, all the peptides contain more than one active motive with known inhibitory angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and dipeptidyl-dipeptidases (DPP)-IV sequences. Indeed, the results indicated that both SH and PH inhibit DPP-IV and ACE activity with a dose-response trend and IC50 values equal to 1.15 ± 0.004 and 1.33 ± 0.004 mg/mL, and 0.33 ± 0.01 and 0.61 ± 0.05 mg/mL, respectively. In addition, both hydrolysates reduced the activity of DPP-IV and ACE enzymes which are expressed on the surface of human intestinal Caco-2 cells. These findings clearly support that notion that SH and PH may represent new ingredients with anti-diabetic and hypotensive effects for the development of innovative multifunctional foods and/or nutraceuticals for the prevention of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract: The first serum antibody detected in mice which spontaneously escaped from BSA paralysis was similar in three ways to that first detected in normal mice 8 days after a primary injection of AP-BSA. Each produced the 4-hr and 72-hr mouse PCA reactions, was similar in avidity, and had comparable low levels of antigen-binding capacity. Antibody produced late after spontaneous escape and that produced late in the normal primary response effected only the 4-hr mouse PCA reaction. Such antibody was of avidity intermediate between the 8-day early anti-BSA and hyperimmune anti-BSA. Only 7Sγl possessed anti-BSA activity by radioimmunoelectrophoresis, whether in mice which spontaneously escaped from BSA paralysis or in normal mice following primary or repeated immunization with either AP-BSA or S-BSA. 7Sγ2, γA, and γM were negative by this criterion. The absence of γM antibody to BSA was confirmed by passive hemagglutination and 2-mercaptoethanol studies on unfractionated antisera; and on antisera fractionated by micro-sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation or by ultracentrifugation of preformed 125I-BSA-anti-BSA complexes. The absence of 7Sγ2 anti-BSA was confirmed by the absence of guinea pig PCA reactions with positive mouse antisera to BSA. The results support the notion that the anti-BSA response in mice newly escaped from paralysis is essentially similar to an early primary response. The discussion has served to emphasize that the concept of reversibly paralyzed cells is in accord with many current models of paralysis involving short-term delays rather than extinction of specific immune responsiveness.
Effects of Soy Protein on HDL‐C Function, Central Blood Pressure, and Arterial Stiffness: Study Design and Participant Characteristics

Abstract:Epidemiologic studies report lower rates of cardiovascular disease in Asian populations where soy products are a staple food. Soy protein consumption has been shown to reduce non‐HDL cholesterol and is the richest dietary source of isoflavones (phytoestrogens), a group of bioactive compounds also shown to have potentially favorable effects on CVD risk. We are conducting a randomized, three‐period, double blind crossover study designed to evaluate the effects of soy protein supplementation on HDL function (measured via cholesterol efflux), central blood pressure and indices of arterial stiffness. Healthy males and females 35–60 years of age with systolic blood pressure ≥120 mm Hg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mm Hg were recruited. The three dietary treatments are: A) 25 g/d soy protein isolate (SPI); B) 50 g/d SPI; and C) 0 g/d SPI (isocaloric carbohydrate control). Participants were free living and followed their habitual diets to which they incorporated the SPI or control powders mixed with milk or water twice daily for 6 weeks each followed by a 2‐week break between treatments. Participants were instructed to keep their diet consistent during treatment periods and asked not to consume any soy containing products other than those provided. Three day dietary records were completed at baseline and during the last week of each treatment to ensure consistency in dietary intake. Participants reported to the diet center weekly to monitor body weight, review consumption logs and collect their soy (or control) powder. Twenty participants are included in the study; 18 have completed all study procedures and 2 will complete their final treatment period by December 2015. Baseline characteristics (mean ± SE) of participants (n=20; 9M & 11F) are as follows: age 51.9 ± 0.72 years, BMI 26.4 ± 0.1 kg/m 2 , systolic blood pressure 129.7 ± 1.9 mm Hg, diastolic blood pressure 82.5 ± 1.1 mm Hg, fasting glucose 88.7 ± 1.0 mg/dL, total cholesterol 197.3 ± 3.3 mg/dl, LDL‐C 120.3 ± 3.0 mg/dL and HDL‐C 55.3 ± 1.4 mg/dL. We hypothesize that consumption of soy protein (in a dose‐dependent manner) will favorably affect HDL particle size, increase HDL‐mediated ex vivo cholesterol efflux and improve central BP and arterial health in this normolipidemic, mildly hypertensive population. Abstract:Scope: Obesity is linked to a chronic low-grade inflammatory state that contributes to the development of obesity-associated metabolic disorders. The anti-inflammatory activities and mechanisms of soyasaponin monomers (A1 , A2 , and I) have been recently demonstrated in cell models. However, their potential in vivo abilities to reduce chronic inflammation and alleviate metabolic disorders in obese status remain unclear. Methods and results: High fat diet (HFD)-fed obese male C57BL/6J mice are intervened by aspirin (0.1 mg kg-1 body weight) or 20 mg kg-1 of soyasaponins A1 , A2 , or I for 8 weeks. Soyasaponins A1 , A2 , and I significantly reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines/mediators in serum, liver, and white adipose tissues (WATs), improve serum lipid profiles, decrease liver cholesterol, triglyceride and steatosis, and promote fecal excretion of cholesterol, triglycerides, and bile acids. Soyasaponins A1 , A2 , and I also decrease IKKα/β phosphorylation in liver and WATs and reduce NF-κB p65 phosphorylation and CD68 mRNA and protein expression in WATs. Soyasaponins A1 and A2 but not I decrease NF-κB p65 phosphorylation in liver and adipocytes hypertrophy in WATs. In addition, Soyasaponin A2 but not A1 nor I decreases fasting blood glucose and improved insulin resistance. Conclusion: Soyasaponins reduce inflammation and improve serum lipid profiles and glucose homeostasis in HFD-induced obese mice.

Abstract:1. Saponins are steroid or triterpene glycosides which occur in a number of important food plants, including such staples as soya beans ( Glycine max ) and chickpeas ( Cicer arietinurn ). They are known to be hypocholesterolaemic. 2. Some saponins form an insoluble complex with cholesterol which prevents its absorption from the small intestine. Others cause an increase in the faecal excretion of bile acids, an indirect route for elimination of cholesterol. 3. We have investigated the effects of different saponins on absorption of the bile salt sodium cholate from perfused loops of small intestine, in vivo, in the rat. Purified saponins from soapwort ( Suponaria Officinalis ), soya beans and quillaia ( Quillata suponaria ) reduced the rate of absorption of the bile salt; soya-bean and soapwort saponins substantially so but quillaia saponin to a much lesser extent. 4. These results were explained by the formation of large mixed micelles by bile acid and saponin molecules in aqueous solution. These aggregates can have molecular weights in excess of 10 6 daltons, consequently the bile acid molecules incorporated in them are not available for absorption. 5. Control of plasma cholesterol and nutrient absorption through dietary saponins could provide substantial health and nutritional benefits in humans.
