Abstract:The goal of spectral imaging is to capture the spectral signature of a target. Traditional scanning method for spectral imaging suffers from large system volume and low image acquisition speed for large scenes. In contrast, computational spectral imaging methods have resorted to computation power for reduced system volume, but still endure long computation time for iterative spectral reconstructions. Recently, deep learning techniques are introduced into computational spectral imaging, witnessing fast reconstruction speed, great reconstruction quality, and the potential to drastically reduce the system volume. In this article, we review state-of-the-art deep-learning-empowered computational spectral imaging methods. They are further divided into amplitude-coded, phase-coded, and wavelength-coded methods, based on different light properties used for encoding. To boost future researches, we've also organized publicly available spectral datasets.

Abstract:With the development of computer science, more and more hardware implementations can be reproduced by software programming, bringing compact, cheap, and fast components to imaging instrumentation. In recent years, computational methods have been introduced into spectral detection, and computational spectrum acquisition implementations have emerged. This paper highlights the advantages of computational spectrum acquisition implementations by comparing them with traditional non-computational methods. Then, focusing on the compact feature, we review the most representative implementations, and finally make discussion and offer an outlook.

Abstract:Computational imaging spectrometry provides spatial-spectral information of objects. This technology has been applied in biomedical imaging, ocean monitoring, military and geographical object identification, etc. Via compressive sensing with coded apertures, 3D spatial-spectral data cube of hyperspectral image is compressed into 2D data array to alleviate the problems due to huge amounts of data. In this paper, a 3D convolutional neural network (3D CNN) is proposed for reconstruction of compressively sensed (CS) multispectral image. This network takes the 2D compressed data as the input and gives an intermediate output, which has identical size with the original 3D data. Then a general image denoiser is applied on it to obtain the final reconstruction result. The network with one fully connected layer, six 3D convolutional layers is trained with a standard hyperspectral image dataset. Though the compression rate is extremely high (16: 1), this network performs well both in spectral reconstruction, demonstrated with single point spectrum, and in quantitative comparison with original data, in terms of peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR). Compared with state-of-the-art iterative reconstruction methods e.g. two-step iterative shrinkage/thresholding (TwIST), this network features high speed reconstruction and low spectral dispersion, which potentially guarantees more accurate identification of objects.

Abstract:Microspectrometers have numerous applications in mobile optical sensing due to their dramatic advantages of compact size, light weight, and low power consumption. Reconstructive spectrometers, based on computational algorithms, have garnered considerable interest as they exhibit superior resolution or spectral bandwidth. However, existing reconstructive spectrometer designs face challenges in spectral applicability, algorithm robustness, and the resolution-bandwidth limit. Here, a reconstructive spectrometer that utilizes a microring resonator (MRR) is proposed to achieve compressed sensing in hardware by decomposing an arbitrary continuous spectrum into a series of simple comb spectra. Owing to the presparse operation of the MRR, one needs to construct the comb spectra with a known line shape, only leaving the amplitude to be solved. Consequent random gratings measure the comb spectra, which are reconstructed with high robustness. Thanks to the independent engineering of spectral resolution and bandwidth, the approach breaks the traditional resolution-bandwidth limit. A narrowband signal of a dual peak at 0.2 nm and a broadband spectrum with a large spectral bandwidth of 60 nm and 300 spectral channels using only eight physical channels is retrieved, achieving an ultrahigh reconstructive compression ratio of 37.5. This work opens up the possibility of on-site spectral spectroscopy applications for the lab-on-a-chip system.

Abstract:Miniaturizing spectrometers for compact and cost-effective mobile platforms is a major challenge in current spectroscopy research, where conventional spectrometers are impractical due to their bulky footprint. Existing miniaturized designs primarily rely on precalibrated response functions of nanophotonic structures to encode spectral information captured in a snapshot by detector arrays. Accurate spectrum reconstruction is achieved through computational techniques, but this requires precise component design, high-precision fabrication, and calibration. We propose an ultra-simplified computational spectrometer that employs a one-to-broadband diffraction decomposition strategy facilitated by a numerical regularized transform that depends only on the spectrum of the diffracted radiation. The key feature of our design is the use of a simple, arbitrarily shaped pinhole as the partial disperser, eliminating the need for complex encoding designs and full spectrum calibration. Our spectrometer achieves a reconstructed spectral peak location accuracy of better than 1 nm over a 200 nm bandwidth and excellent resolution for peaks separated by 3 nm in a bimodal spectrum, all within a compact footprint of under half an inch. Notably, our approach also reveals a breakthrough in broadband coherent diffractive imaging without requiring any prior knowledge of the broadband illumination spectrum, assumptions of non-dispersive specimens, or correction for detector quantum efficiency.

Abstract:A computational spectrometer is a novel form of spectrometer powerful for portable in situ applications. In the encoding part of the computational spectrometer, filters with highly non-correlated properties are requisite for compressed sensing, which poses severe challenges for optical design and fabrication. In the reconstruction part of the computational spectrometer, conventional iterative reconstruction algorithms are featured with limited efficiency and accuracy, which hinders their application for real-time in situ measurements. This study proposes a neural network computational spectrometer trained by a small dataset with high-correlation optical filters. We aim to change the paradigm by which the accuracy of neural network computational spectrometers depends heavily on the amount of training data and the non-correlation property of optical filters. First, we propose a presumption about a distribution law for the common large training dataset, in which a unique widespread distribution law is shown when calculating the spectrum correlation. Based on that, we extract the original dataset according to the distribution probability and form a small training dataset. Then a fully connected neural network architecture is constructed to perform the reconstruction. After that, a group of thin film filters are introduced to work as the encoding layer. Then the neural network is trained by a small dataset under high-correlation filters and applied in simulation. Finally, the experiment is carried out and the result indicates that the neural network enabled by a small training dataset has performed very well with the thin film filters. This study may provide a reference for computational spectrometers based on high-correlation optical filters.

Abstract:<p>Raman spectroscopy has shown great potential in biomedical applications. However, slow data acquisition of Raman spectra has seriously hindered the expansion of its application. In this paper, we have completed the reconstruction of Raman spectra with multi-channel measurements based global weighted linear regression. This algorithm establishes a linear regression function by optimizing the training samples and making a global assignment weighted to the optimizing samples. Simultaneously, the normalization and polynomial regression are introduced in order to improve the accuracy of reconstructed spectra. It has evaluated the Raman spectra of several materials. According to the root mean square error, the fitness between reconstructed and original spectra is excellent. This algorithm can be used in quickly testing for potential sample component in a substance, where the sample component to be tested is known and provides a theoretical support for the application of Raman imaging technology in fast dynamic systems.</p>

Abstract:Spectroscopy is a technique that analyzes the interaction between matter and light as a function of wavelength. It is the most convenient method for obtaining qualitative and quantitative information about an unknown sample with reasonable accuracy. However, traditional spectroscopy is reliant on bulky and expensive spectrometers, while emerging applications of portable, low-cost and lightweight sensing and imaging necessitate the development of miniaturized spectrometers. In this study, we have developed a computational spectroscopy method that can provide single-shot operation, sub-nanometer spectral resolution, and direct materials characterization. This method is enabled by a metasurface integrated computational spectrometer and deep learning algorithms. The identification of critical parameters of optical cavities and chemical solutions is demonstrated through the application of the method, with an average spectral reconstruction accuracy of 0.4 nm and an actual measurement error of 0.32 nm. The mean square errors for the characterization of cavity length and solution concentration are 0.53 % and 1.21 %, respectively. Consequently, computational spectroscopy can achieve the same level of spectral accuracy as traditional spectroscopy while providing convenient, rapid material characterization in a variety of scenarios.

Abstract:Computational spectrometers are pivotal in enabling low-cost, in-situ and rapid spectral analysis, with potential applications in chemistry, biology, and environmental science. However, filter-based spectral encoding approaches typically use filter arrays, complicating the manufacturing process and hindering device consistency. By capitalizing on the polarization separation effect under oblique incidence (PSEOI), we pioneer the use of a single filter for highly efficient spectral encoding, and propose a novel computational spectrometer spanning visible to mid-infrared wavelengths by combining the Single-Spinning Film Encoder (SSFE) with deep learning-based reconstruction algorithm. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is employed to optimize the film configuration of SSFE, achieving low-correlation and high-complexity spectral responses under different polarizations and spinning angles, thereby enhancing both spectral resolution and accuracy of reconstruction across diverse spectral ranges. Spectral resolutions up to 0.5 nm, 2 nm, 10 nm can be realized for single-peak narrowband spectra, and 3 nm, 6 nm, 20 nm for dual-peak narrowband spectra, over the visible, near-, and mid-infrared wavelength ranges, respectively. Moreover, the proposed spectrometer demonstrates an overall 81.38% precision for the classification of 220 chemical compounds, confirming its robustness and precision in practical scenarios, along with the capability for compact, cost-effective spectroscopic solutions.

Abstract:Multispectral imaging system is of wide application in relevant fields for its capability in acquiring spectral information of scenes. Its limitation is that, due to the large number of spectral channels, the imaging process can be quite time-consuming when capturing high-resolution (HR) multispectral images. To resolve this limitation, this paper proposes a fast multispectral imaging framework based on the image sensor pixel-binning and spectral unmixing techniques. The framework comprises a fast imaging stage and a computational reconstruction stage. In the imaging stage, only a few spectral images are acquired in HR, while most spectral images are acquired in low resolution (LR). The LR images are captured by applying pixel binning on the image sensor, such that the exposure time can be greatly reduced. In the reconstruction stage, an optimal number of basis spectra are computed and the signal-dependent noise statistics are estimated. Then the unknown HR images are efficiently reconstructed by solving a closed-form cost function that models the spatial and spectral degradations. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is evaluated using real-scene multispectral images. Experimental results validate that, in general, the method outperforms the state of the arts in terms of reconstruction accuracy, with additional $20\times $ or more improvement in computational efficiency.

Abstract:This review presents a comprehensive overview of miniaturized computational spectrometers, focusing on spectral encoding strategies and reconstruction algorithms. The analysis includes recent advances, optimization strategies, performance metrics, and considerations for practical applications. Additionally, the application of these spectrometers for hyperspectral imaging and insights into future developments are discussed, highlighting their potential for various fields. Miniaturized computational spectrometers have emerged as a promising strategy for miniaturized spectrometers, which breaks the compromise between footprint and performance in traditional miniaturized spectrometers by introducing computational resources. They have attracted widespread attention and a variety of materials, optical structures, and photodetectors are adopted to fabricate computational spectrometers with the cooperation of reconstruction algorithms. Here, a comprehensive review of miniaturized computational spectrometers, focusing on two crucial components: spectral encoding and reconstruction algorithms are provided. Principles, features, and recent progress of spectral encoding strategies are summarized in detail, including space‐modulated, time‐modulated, and light‐source spectral encoding. The reconstruction algorithms are classified into traditional and deep learning algorithms, and they are carefully analyzed based on the mathematical models required for spectral reconstruction. Drawing from the analysis of the two components, cooperations between them are considered, figures of merits for miniaturized computational spectrometers are highlighted, optimization strategies for improving their performance are outlined, and considerations in operating these systems are provided. The application of miniaturized computational spectrometers to achieve hyperspectral imaging is also discussed. Finally, the insights into the potential future applications and developments of computational spectrometers are provided.

Abstract:In the trend of spectrometer miniaturization, the design of combining computational imaging with the metasurfaces has been proved to be an efficient and feasible solution. Nevertheless, determining the optimal filter array design remains a compelling subject for ongoing research. A computational microspectrometer consisting of a planar array of broadband optical filters is proposed, which are formed by low-loss freeform dielectric metasurfaces. Diverse metasurface designs are obtained by using binary graph generation technology, and rich spectral responses are obtained. The final performance of microspectrometer depends on the trade-offs between reconstruction time, relative error, footprint, and resolution. To optimize these trade-offs, we have improved the existing freeform metasurface design scheme and optimized the filter array design. Simulation results show the proposed microspectrometer can successfully reconstruct the spectra over the 380 to 680 nm spectral range with a resolution of 1 nm. In summary, we propose an integrated design including meta-pixel design, filter combinations and simulation test flow, which leads to an impressive performance microspectrometer.

A Spectral Reconstruction Algorithm of Miniature Spectrometer Based on Sparse Optimization and Dictionary Learning

Abstract:The miniaturization of spectrometer can broaden the application area of spectrometry, which has huge academic and industrial value. Among various miniaturization approaches, filter-based miniaturization is a promising implementation by utilizing broadband filters with distinct transmission functions. Mathematically, filter-based spectral reconstruction can be modeled as solving a system of linear equations. In this paper, we propose an algorithm of spectral reconstruction based on sparse optimization and dictionary learning. To verify the feasibility of the reconstruction algorithm, we design and implement a simple prototype of a filter-based miniature spectrometer. The experimental results demonstrate that sparse optimization is well applicable to spectral reconstruction whether the spectra are directly sparse or not. As for the non-directly sparse spectra, their sparsity can be enhanced by dictionary learning. In conclusion, the proposed approach has a bright application prospect in fabricating a practical miniature spectrometer.
Sim2Real in Reconstructive Spectroscopy: Deep Learning with Augmented Device-Informed Data Simulation

Abstract:This work proposes a deep learning (DL)-based framework, namely Sim2Real, for spectral signal reconstruction in reconstructive spectroscopy, focusing on efficient data sampling and fast inference time. The work focuses on the challenge of reconstructing real-world spectral signals under the extreme setting where only device-informed simulated data are available for training. Such device-informed simulated data are much easier to collect than real-world data but exhibit large distribution shifts from their real-world counterparts. To leverage such simulated data effectively, a hierarchical data augmentation strategy is introduced to mitigate the adverse effects of this domain shift, and a corresponding neural network for the spectral signal reconstruction with our augmented data is designed. Experiments using a real dataset measured from our spectrometer device demonstrate that Sim2Real achieves significant speed-up during the inference while attaining on-par performance with the state-of-the-art optimization-based methods.

Abstract:Computational spectrometers with small footprints can be integrated with other devices for use in applications such as chemical analysis, medical diagnosis and environmental monitoring. However, their spectral resolution is limited because conventional photoelectric detectors only measure an amplitude-dependent response to incident light. Here we show that a deformable two-dimensional homojunction can be used to create a microspectrometer with dual-signal spectral reconstruction. The semifloating molybdenum disulfide homojunction exhibits a giant electrostriction effect through which the kinetics of photo-generated carriers can be manipulated via an in-plane electric field generated by gate voltage. By leveraging the tunability of both amplitude and relaxation time of the photoelectric response, a dual-signal response can be used with a deep neural network algorithm to reconstruct an incident spectrum. Our dual-signal microspectrometer has a footprint of 20 x 25 mu m(2), offers a resolution of 1.2 nm and has a spectral waveband number of 380, which is comparable to benchtop spectrometers.
