Abstract:Obesity is becoming a global health problem. With the living standards of residents have improved rapidly in China, the problem of obesity becomes a serious threat to people’s health. Although obesity effected by many factors, the role of the built environment in relation to obesity among population should be taken into consideration. This paper examines the association of built environment and body mass index with the hierarchical linear model, based on the data from 2016 China Labor-force Dynamics Survey (CLDS), which involves 29 provinces in China and investigates 401 villages or communities as well as 14226 families. In this paper, the village or community is used as the basic analysis unit, and the body mass index of the residents is used as the dependent variable, and neighborhood built environment (e.g. density of exercise facilities, square or park and distance to them) is as independent variables, socioeconomic status (e.g. age, gender, education, marital status, income and employment status) and health and exercise characteristics (e.g. self-rated health, average weekly exercise time and frequency) are as control variables. Participants are adults aged 15-65 years (n = 21086; 63.30% rural vs urban). With the independent variables from both individual and residential levels, hierarchical linear model is applied respectively to examine how body mass index is affected. Additionally, samples are classified by age group, urban/rural neighborhood and we figure out which factor mainly effected different groups. We explore that BMI is higher in high- vs. low-facility density neighborhoods but not significantly differ by neighborhood income. Overweight/obesity (BMI >= 25) is lower in high-developed districts. Physical fitness is higher in high-income neighborhoods but unrelates income. We conclude that living in walkable neighborhoods is associated with more physical activity and lower overweight/obesity but not with other benefits. Adults in higher-income neighborhoods have lower BMI and higher mental condition. These findings have important implications for urban planning and the corresponding improvement strategy is proposed

Abstract:As obesity is emerging as a serious social issue, urban planners and public health practitioners are making efforts to establish urban environments that can help to reduce obesity. Despite many studies on the correlation between built environments and obesity, little attention has been devoted to micro-scale street environments related to obesity. This study fills this gap by empirically analyzing the effects of both micro- and macro-scale walkable environments on obesity through the mediating factor of walking behaviors. In particular, we employed the deep learning technique of semantic segmentation based on Google Street View panorama images, to estimate visual street environments at the pedestrian eye level. Based on an online survey collected from 1000 respondents in Seoul, Korea, this study used the Structural Equation Model to examine the systematic relationships between walkable environments, walking behaviors, and obesity. Our findings revealed that walkable environments had an indirect effect on obesity through the mediating factor of walking behaviors. Specifically, utilitarian walking behavior had no significant effect on obesity while leisure walking behavior had an effect on reducing obesity. Moreover, visual street environments (i.e., street greenery and sidewalk pavement) and macro-scale built environments (i.e., land-use mix and intersection density) had significant indirect effects on obesity. The results of this study provide the evidence for policymakers, urban planners, and public health practitioners to effectively retrofit built environments to be more physically active-friendly, so as to reduce obesity.

Abstract:Objectives The purpose of this research is to analyze the environmental factors affecting obesity in the elderly in rural South Korea. Methods A survey and Geographical Information System(GIS) data analysis were conducted on 300 elderly people aged 65 and over living in four rural Counties in two Provinces. Formative research was conducted to develop the survey questionnaire. The perception of food environment was measured with five questions, mainly on availability, affordability, and accessibility. The perception of walking environment was measured with eleven questions on esthetics, safety, traffic and community. Social cohesion and the sense of community were asked for measuring social environment. T-test, chi-squared test and stepwise backward regression modeling were performed using Stata/SE 17.0 version. Results We found that the participants from Gangwon-do had higher obesity prevalence than the ones from Jeollanam-do. There was no significant difference in the physical environment between the two Provinces using GIS data analysis; however, there were differences in the perception of the physical environment and the social environment. It was confirmed that the perceptions of the physical environment and social environment were more positive among participants from Jeollanam-do, where obesity prevalence was lower. In stratified stepwise regression models, better perception of food environment was associated with lower BMI in both Provinces. Conclusions In this study, various obesity-related environmental factors were explored in rural South Korea. The differences in obesity prevalence in four rural Counties may be explained by different perception on food, walking, and social environments, despite of the similar background factors, such as age distribution, sex ratio, educational level, and financial environment. These findings confirmed that even areas with similar physical settings have different environmental characteristics, which should be considered in developing effective obesity prevention programs. Future research should focus on the development of environmental evaluation tools and the effective measures to enhance the perception of social environment in rural South Korea. Abstract:Among many Asian countries, Pakistan is also facing an increase in overweight/obesity rate as an epidemic. This research explores how various built environment, personal, religious, cultural, and socioeconomic factors work differently for both sexes to contribute to increasing the Body Mass Index of female adults in all three Socioeconomic Statuses of the megacity Karachi, Pakistan. 210 random samples of 20 years or older male and female adults were selected, and the sample data, from survey questionnaires, was analyzed through Ordinary Least Square Regression in SPSS V.25. The results confirm that low-density neighborhoods, higher fast-food restaurant density, accessibility (walking distance in no. of min) to parks/playgrounds, household size, obesity running in the family, health condition of an individual, and discouraging behavior by others are positively associated with higher BMI. Whereas less junk food consumption in a week and availability of pleasant surroundings where people prefer walking are negatively associated with higher BMI. Although religious factors were not found connected to higher BMI, cultural, built environment, and religious factors combined were responsible for the choice of Physical Activity in both sexes. Walking was the most common whereas cycling was the least common PA in females in all SES.

Abstract:As the prevalence of overweight and obesity has been increasing in South Korea, it is critical to better understand possible associations between environmental surroundings and general health status. We characterize key health test readings and basic demographic information from 10,816 South Koreans, obtained from two Ubiquitous Healthcare (U-Healthcare) centers that have distinct surrounding neighborhood characteristics. One is located in a rural area in Busan, the other is located in an urban area in Daegu surrounded by a highly crowded residential and commercial business area. We analyze comprehensive health data sets, including blood pressure, body mass index, pulse rate, and body fat percentage from December 2013 to December 2014 to study differences in overall health test measurements between users of rural and urban U-Healthcare centers. We conduct multiple regression analyses to evaluate differences in general health status between the two centers, adjusting for confounding factors. We report statistical evidence of differences in blood pressure at the two locations. As local residents are major users, the result indicates that the environmental surroundings of the centers can influence the demographics of the users, the type of health tests in demand, and the users' health status. We further envision that U-Healthcare centers will provide public users with an opportunity for enhancing their current health, which could potentially be used to prevent them from developing chronic diseases, while providing surveillance healthcare data.

Abstract:Once upon a time, not very long ago, students of biology with burning questions about the nature of life used to spend long hours in dusty library stacks searching for knowledge and opinions recorded by their academic ancestors onto random access information retrieval devices made of matted cellulose fibers. Although these "books," as they were called, can still be found in antique stores and some university libraries, their use has declined dramatically since the release of the first user-friendly free World Wide Web (WWW) browser in November of 1993. Publishers were quick to spot the trend and several journals, notably the massive Journal of Biological Chemistry (http: // www-jbc.stanford.edu/), are now available on-line and several others, such as Plant Physiology, are partially available on-line (for a list of electronic journals, see http:// www.nih.gov/science/journals/). It now seems likely that most academic journals will be available via the WWW before the turn of the century, and it seems certain that an ever-increasing number will only be available via the WWW as users and libraries come to grips with using the electronic format. Although most academics have been selected on the basis of a fondness for paper, an expanding coterie have recognized that there are many advantages to the electronic versions. For instance, it is possible to do a full text keyword search of articles in Journal of Biological Chemistry. It is also possible to do forward literature searches. That is, if you are reading an article from a 1995 issue that is cited in a 1996 paper, the 1995 article is annotated with a hypertext link (a highlighted word or phrase that activates a retrieve command when clicked with a mouse) that allows you to move forward to the citing article with the click of a mouse button. Another nice feature is that there need be no limitation on the number of color pictures or film clips associated with an article. The role of video in cell biology research is expanding rapidly and there is every reason to expect that it will soon be routinely included in electronic research publications. It is also possible to append commentaries to articles at any time after they appear. In the physics journals, where electronic publishing has been routine for many years, the value of an article is established by the number of annotations by readers who can append their comments to an article. Finally, of course, it is possible to connect the journal articles directly to databases via hypertext links so that one can move from the authors' conclusions back to the original data. The kinds of information available in databases or in some other format via the WWW are expanding daily. Indeed, the main problem with the WWW at the moment is that there is so much information available that it is possible to spend many consecutive days busily hopping from one site to another, finding something interesting at each stop but never arriving at the desired source. Thus, in this short overview we have focused on some of the resources that are available without expense and are likely to be of most value to the readers of Plant Physiology. In addition, monthly descriptions of new WWW resources of interest to biologists can be found in "The Spider's Web," a regular column in Current Biology.
Differences in Physical Activity and Self-Rated Health Levels Based on Satisfaction with Physical Environment of Local Communities: From School to Lifelong Physical Education

Abstract:Background: In Korea, substantial disparities exist in physical environments across regions, exacerbating the polarization between metropolitan and provincial areas and urban and rural regions. Objectives: This study examines the differences in the physical activity and self-rated health of local communities in relation to satisfaction with the physical environment. By identifying and addressing these underlying causes of health disparities, the study provides foundational data to inform policy efforts. Methods: The study utilized data from the 2023 Community Health Survey conducted by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. It included 231,752 individuals aged 19 and older (105,754 men and 125,998 women) selected through a two-stage probability proportional systematic sampling method. One-on-one online interviews were conducted from 16 May to 31 July 2023. The physical environment was assessed based on public satisfaction with safety, natural and living environments, public transportation, and medical services. Study variables included subjective health status and physical activity, with subvariables for physical activity encompassing the duration of vigorous and moderate physical activity, walking, and flexibility exercises. For data analysis, MANOVA and ANOVA were conducted, with Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. Results: Considerable variations in physical activity were observed based on satisfaction with the local community environment. Regarding self-rated health, significant differences were found in safety levels, living environment, and medical services. Satisfaction with the physical environment positively influenced physical activity and self-rated health. Conclusion: Therefore, it is imperative to reduce disparities in the physical environment between regions and enhance residents' satisfaction.

Abstract:In the social ecological model, personal characteristics are important determinants of health behaviors, however, multi-dimensional approaches that consider social and physical environments must be utilized to gain a broader picture. Accordingly, this study examines the effects of personal, social, and physical environment variables as factors affecting levels of physical activity (METs). Our findings are based on 72,916 responses from the 2015 Community Health Survey in South Korea. Individual characteristics considered included sex, education level, marital status, age, and income. The social environment variables considered were trust between neighbors and the social network with neighbors. The physical environment variables were satisfaction with living environment and satisfaction with public transportation. The analysis was conducted using a multilevel model in order to accurately consider the characteristic differences of the variables. Regarding personal characteristics, sex, education level, and age have a significant effect on physical activity. Of the social and physical environment variables, social network with neighbors and satisfaction with public transportation have a significant effect on physical activity. This study confirms that a macroscopic understanding is needed to explain individual levels of physical activity; the results of this study will be helpful for public health interventions concerning physical activity.

Abstract:Adolescence is a life stage critical to the establishment of healthy behaviours, including physical activity (PA). Factors associated with the built environment have been shown to impact PA across the life course. We examined the sociodemographic differences in, and associations between, perceived neighbourhood walkability, PA, and body mass index (BMI) in South African adolescents. We recruited a convenience sample (n = 143; 13-18 years; 65% female) of students from three high schools (middle/high and low-income areas). Participants completed a PA questionnaire and the Neighbourhood Environment Walkability Scale (NEWS)-Africa and anthropometry measurements. Multivariable linear regression was used to examine various relationships. We found that, compared with adolescents living in middle/high income neighbourhoods, those living in low-income neighbourhoods had lower perceived walkability and PA with higher BMI percentiles. The associations between neighbourhood walkability and PA were inconsistent. In the adjusted models, land use diversity and personal safety were associated with club sports participation, street connectivity was positively associated with school sports PA, and more favourable perceived walkability was negatively associated with active transport. Overall, our findings suggest that the perceived walkability of lower income neighbourhoods is worse in comparison with higher income neighbourhoods, though the association with PA and BMI is unclear.
The Neighborhood Energy Balance Equation: Does Neighborhood Food Retail Environment + Physical Activity Environment = Obesity? The CARDIA Study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Recent obesity prevention initiatives focus on healthy neighborhood design, but most research examines neighborhood food retail and physical activity (PA) environments in isolation. We estimated joint, interactive, and cumulative impacts of neighborhood food retail and PA environment characteristics on body mass index (BMI) throughout early adulthood.METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used cohort data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study [n=4,092; Year 7 (24-42 years, 1992-1993) followed over 5 exams through Year 25 (2010-2011); 12,921 person-exam observations], with linked time-varying geographic information system-derived neighborhood environment measures. Using regression with fixed effects for individuals, we modeled time-lagged BMI as a function of food and PA resource density (counts per population) and neighborhood development intensity (a composite density score). We controlled for neighborhood poverty, individual-level sociodemographics, and BMI in the prior exam; and included significant interactions between neighborhood measures and by sex. Using model coefficients, we simulated BMI reductions in response to single and combined neighborhood improvements. Simulated increase in supermarket density (from 25(th) to 75(th) percentile) predicted inter-exam reduction in BMI of 0.09 kg/m(2) [estimate (95% CI): -0.09 (-0.16, -0.02)]. Increasing commercial PA facility density predicted BMI reductions up to 0.22 kg/m(2) in men, with variation across other neighborhood features [estimate (95% CI) range: -0.14 (-0.29, 0.01) to -0.22 (-0.37, -0.08)]. Simultaneous increases in supermarket and commercial PA facility density predicted inter-exam BMI reductions up to 0.31 kg/m(2) in men [estimate (95% CI) range: -0.23 (-0.39, -0.06) to -0.31 (-0.47, -0.15)] but not women. Reduced fast food restaurant and convenience store density and increased public PA facility density and neighborhood development intensity did not predict reductions in BMI.CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that improvements in neighborhood food retail or PA environments may accumulate to reduce BMI, but some neighborhood changes may be less beneficial to women.

Synthesis May Be Better Than Singleness— A Cross-sectional Study on Physical Activity Environment, Food Environment and Adolescents' BMI

Abstract:Objectives: To analyze the relationship between residential physical activity environment and food environment respectively and adolescent BMI level, the correlation between adolescent physical activity level and food intake behavior respectively and adolescent BMI level, as well as compare the difference of correlation between residential single physical activity environment or combined physical activity environment and adolescent BMI level, and the difference of correlation between food environment and adolescent BMI level. Methods: Based on the cross-sectional study design, a total of 1035 adolescents aged 11 to 17 years were surveyed in the urban area of Jinhua City. The final valid sample was 884 (including 411 males and 473 females) after screening, due to the methodological difficulties of the food intake frequency survey. The height and weight of the sample were measured, and the subjective perception evaluation of physical activity level, frequency of food intake, residential physical activity environment, and food environment were investigated. Results: (1) No significant difference exists in BMI between physical activity levels in the sample overall and among men, but a significant difference exists between physical activity levels among women (p<0.05). A significant difference exists in BMI between the frequencies of non-healthy food intake in the overall sample (p<0.05 or p<0.01). After differentiating by gender, there were significant differences in BMI among different frequencies of fried food, puffed food, and carbonated beverage intake among men (p<0.05 or p<0.01), and among women for different frequencies of puffed food, sugary drinks, and carbonated beverages (p<0.05 or p<0.01). (2) All indicators of physical activity environment in the residence were correlated with the physical activity level of adolescents and were significant (p<0.05 or p<0.01). The physical activity level of females compared to males was correlated with the safety of physical activity facilities and other environmental indicators in and around the residence and was significant after differentiating by gender. (3) Binary Logistic Regression results showed that when the independent variable was the combination of "physical activity and frequency of food intake", fried food (OR=1.771, p<0.05), puffed food (OR=1.762, p<0.05), and carbonated beverage intake frequency (OR=2.082, p<0.05) were risk factors for adolescent obesity. When the independent variable was a combination of "physical activity environment and food environment", fewer stray dogs roaming in and around the residence (OR=0.766, p<0.05), better physical activity venues/facilities (OR=0.661, p<0.05), and more free physical exercise areas (OR= 0.686, p < 0.01) were protective factors for adolescent obesity. Conclusion: The overall physical activity level of adolescents in Jinhua urban area was low and the frequency of unhealthy food intake was high. The differences between groups with different unhealthy food intake frequencies were significant. There were significant correlations between physical activity environment and physical activity level of adolescents, and food environment and frequency of unhealthy food intake of adolescents. A better physical activity environment and food environment in and around the residence contributed to adolescents showing relatively lower BMI levels. Female adolescents need to pay more attention to the combined effect of "physical activity environment and food environment" in obesity prevention and control, compared with male adolescents.
The built environment, purpose-specific walking behaviour and overweight: evidence from Wuhan metropolis in central China

Abstract:The impact of objective and subjective environmental factors on health outcomes has been a topic of significant debate, with a growing body of research acknowledging the role of a physically active lifestyle in promoting health. However, consensus regarding their precise influence remains elusive. This study contributes to these discussions by exploring how individual health outcomes correlate with transport and leisure walking behaviours, set against both the objective and subjective aspects of environmental influences in the context of Wuhan, an inland Chinese megacity. Street view images, multi-source geospatial data and a questionnaire survey were employed to characterise the "5D + Greenery" objective and perceived characteristics of the neighbourhood environment. Multi-group structural equation modelling was utilised to unravel the complex relationship and gender heterogeneity among environmental factors, purpose-specific walking, and overweight. Our results suggest that both objective land use diversity and perceived convenience are significantly associated with overweight. The accessibility of local service facilities and visible greenery promote both transport and leisure walking. While perceived neighbourhood safety encourages transport walking, perceived walkability is positively correlated with leisure walking. Notably, leisure walking, usually considered beneficial, presents a positive association with overweight conditions, acting as a mediation. Gender disparities exist in pathways between the environment and purpose-specific walking, as well as weight. The findings lend support to the planning of an activity-supporting built environment as a crucial strategy for obesity prevention.

Associations of built environment and proximity of food outlets with weight status: Analysis from 14 cities in 10 countries

Abstract:The study aimed to examine associations of neighborhood built environments and proximity of food outlets (BE measures) with body weight status using pooled data from an international study (IPEN Adult). Objective BE measures were calculated using geographic information systems for 10,008 participants (4463 male, 45%) aged 16-66 years in 14 cities. Participants self-reported proximity to three types of food outlets. Outcomes were body mass index (BMI) and overweight/obesity status. Male and female weight status associations with BE measures were estimated by generalized additive mixed models. Proportion (95% CI) of overweight (BMI 25 to <30) ranged from 16.6% (13.1, 19.8) to 41.1% (37.3, 44.7), and obesity (BMI ≥ 30) from 2.9% (1.3, 4.4) to 31.3% (27.7, 34.7), with Hong Kong being the lowest and Cuernavaca, Mexico highest for both proportions. Results differed by sex. Greater street intersection density, public transport density and perceived proximity to restaurants (males) were associated with lower odds of overweight/obesity (BMI ≥ 25). Proximity to public transport stops (females) was associated with higher odds of overweight/obesity. Composite BE measures were more strongly related to BMI and overweight/obesity status than single variables among men but not women. One standard deviation improvement in the composite measures of BE was associated with small reductions of 0.1-0.5% in BMI but meaningful reductions of 2.5-5.3% in the odds of overweight/obesity. Effects were linear and generalizable across cities. Neighborhoods designed to support public transport, with food outlets within walking distance, may contribute to global obesity control.

Studies have contended that the built environment, particularly the food environment and walkability, may contribute to the prevalence of childhood obesity. In Asian countries which are characterized by rapid urbanization, high population density and oriental diets, little is known about how such urban built environment affects the onset of childhood obesity. This study juxtaposes the effect of food environment, walkability, and outdoor activity spaces at the neighborhood level upon childhood body weight in a mid-sized city in China. This observational study utilizes a retrospective time-trend study design to examine the associations between neighborhood built environment and children's body weight in Zhanjiang City, a mid-sized city in Guangdong Province, China. Robust multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to estimate associations between the built environments and child BMI and weight status (i.e., overweight/obesity and obesity only). This study finds that: (1) Western-style fast food and Chinese-style fast food have divergent impacts on childhood body weight. At neighborhood level, while increased exposure to Western-style fast food may increase child BMI and the risk of overweight and obesity, increased exposure to Chinese-style fast food, on the contrary, may reduce child BMI and the risk of overweight and obesity, indicating a positive health impact of Chinese-style fast food. (2) However, the positive health impacts brought about by Chinese-style fast food, walkable environments and accessible traditional fruit/vegetable markets have gradually disappeared in recent years. This study is among the first to simultaneously consider the divergent and changing impact of food environment upon childhood body weight in urban China. The findings provide important implications for healthy city design and the management of food retail industry in addressing the obesity epidemic in younger generations living in Asian cities. As prominent differences exist in food culture between Asian and Western cities, more attention should be paid to healthy food environment in future studies and related urban planning strategies formulation.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Research has shown that obesity appears to spread through social ties. However, the association between other characteristics of social networks and obesity is unclear. This study aimed to identify the association between social network characteristics and body mass index (BMI, kg/m(2)) in an elderly Korean population.METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 657 Koreans (273 men, 384 women) aged 60 years or older who participated in the Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project. Network size is a count of the number of friends. Density of communication network is the number of connections in the social network reported as a fraction of the total links possible in the personal (ego-centric) network. Average frequency of communication (or meeting) measures how often network members communicate (or meet) each other. The association of each social network measure with BMI was investigated by multiple linear regression analysis.RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounders, the men with lower density (<0.71) and higher network size (4-6) had the higher BMI (β=1.089, p=0.037) compared to the men with higher density (>0.83) and lower size (1-2), but not in the women (p=0.393). The lowest tertile of communication frequency was associated with higher BMI in the women (β=0.885, p=0.049), but not in the men (p=0.140).CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that social network structure (network size and density) and activation (communication frequency and meeting frequency) are associated with obesity among the elderly. There may also be gender differences in this association.

Abstract:Introduction Amid the growing global concern about obesity, young adults in South Korea are particularly affected, with 30.8% of people aged 19–34 classified as obese. Given the urban-centric lifestyle of Korean youth, understanding the relationship between daily life activities and the urban environment holds great promise for effective interventions. This study aims to explore the daily life activities of young adults with obesity in Seoul, a city known for its highly accessible and compact environment. The research questions explore the interaction between daily life activities and the neighbourhood environment and consider weight management in an urban context. Methods and analysis This study uses an extended qualitative geographic information system approach to explore a district in Seoul with a highly accessible and compact urban environment. The sample comprises young adults with obesity (aged 19–34) residing in the study area, with recruitment targeting up to 51 participants for data saturation. A qualitative, multimethod approach combines descriptive and spatiotemporal data collection. Descriptive data are being collected, including in-depth interviews and photographs of daily food consumption. Spatial data collection involves field observations, cognitive mapping and mobile Global Positioning System tracking. Temporal data is gathered through participants drawing round timetables, detailing their daily schedules. Data analysis will entail thematic analysis of the interview data and content analysis of the spatiotemporal data. For the integrated analysis, pattern finding will be used to synthesise the data. Ethics and dissemination This study was approved by the institutional review board of Seoul National University on 11 July 2022. Data collection and curation are currently underway, and the results of the analysis will be shared with the scientific community at international conferences and peer-reviewed journals. We are planning an open seminar to share our research findings with relevant policy-makers, community organisations and health professionals.

Exploring the nexus between physical environments, resident preferences, and usage frequency of community centers: Evidence from two Korean neighborhoods in Seoul

Abstract:Community centers offer a public space for physical activities, attracting residents with diverse interests and abilities, and promoting social interaction and connection, which in turn enhances individuals' physical and mental fitness and fosters a sense of community. When exploring the correlation between community space accessibility and usage frequency, it is crucial to consider empirical evidence and resident preferences. Nevertheless, the role of physical environments in determining community center usage frequency, while also considering residents' inclination for effortless access, remains unclear. This study investigated the impact of resident preferences and satisfaction with the accessibility of community centers and physical environments on usage frequency, addressing a gap in previous research. Structural equation models were utilized to analyze a household drop-off survey consisting of 186 residents gathered from two neighborhoods in Korea. The results revealed that while the preference for easy access to community centers did not have a substantial effect on their usage frequency, satisfaction with easy access to such centers was positively linked to usage frequency. Furthermore, the perception of physical environments as being walkable and having a diverse range of amenities was associated with a higher frequency of community center usage. These findings have policy implications as they can help increase the usage frequency of community centers and enhance overall well-being in regenerated neighborhoods.

Abstract:Background Overweight and obesity in children continues to increase. Yet, the role of active transport, namely walking, in mitigating these trends remains unclear. This study examined the cross-sectional association between walkability and children's Body Mass Index (BMI) and how this varies by socio-economic and lifestyle characteristics. Methods We analysed BMI for 14-year-old children living in Wales from the UK Millennium Cohort Study. Children were categorised as healthy weight, overweight or obese using the British 1990 cut-off points. Walkability was assessed using the Wales Active Living Environments (Wal-ALE) database, categorised as 1 (least walkable environments) to 5 (most walkable environments). We applied multinomial logistic regression analysis and adjusted for ethnicity, having a limiting longstanding illness, parental BMI, socio-economic circumstances, and lifestyle characteristics. Results Children were more likely to be obese if they lived in areas classed as more walkable in unadjusted analysis [Relative Risk Ratio (RRR) = 1.72 (95%CI = 1.15–2.58)] and following adjustment for ethnicity, limiting longstanding illness and parental BMI [RRR = 1.83 (95%CI = 1.12–3.00)]). Significant associations remained even after further adjustment for lifestyle characteristics and socio-economic circumstances [RRR = 1.76 (95%CI = 1.05–2.96)]. Further, children were more likely to be obese if their parents were overweight or obese and if they were living in poverty. Children were less likely to be obese if they spent 3 or more days per week in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and if they ate breakfast every day vs. some days or never. Conclusion Findings demonstrate that walkable environments are not associated with lower rates of obesity in children, indicating that the relationship between the built environment and child health is complex and requires further study.

Abstract:ObjectivesYouth obesity has increased substantially in recent decades; however, the potential role of the built environment in mitigating these trends is unclear. This study examines whether more walkable neighbourhoods are associated with lower levels of overweight/obesity for adolescents compared to less walkable neighbourhoods, after considering the potential role of socio-economic and lifestyle characteristics. MethodsWe examine overweight/obesity levels for all singleton 14 years-old children living in Wales, using the UK Millennium Cohort Study. Children are classified as healthy weight, overweight and obese using international age and sex adjusted cut-offs for body mass index (BMI). The built environment is assessed using the active living environments (ALE) index for 2017-2018 classified into 5 categories (1-low walkability and 5 – high walkability). We apply regression analysis and adjust for children characteristics (e.g., physical activity), parental socio-economic circumstances and lifestyle choices (e.g., maternal education, physical activity). ResultsWe assess the hypothesis that the built environment is associated with adolescents’ overweight/obesity levels and examine how much of this association could be modified by parental socioeconomic circumstances and lifestyle choices. The ALE index is higher in urban compared to rural areas. To capture variations in Wales’ population, we are conducting a stratified analysis to explore any differences on the association between ALE index and adolescents’ overweight/obesity by urban and rural areas. Accounting for the potential role of lifestyle and socio-economic characteristics is key for future research, as understanding the underlying pathways of this association is necessary to design effective interventions. ConclusionFindings can help us develop a better understanding of associations between the built environment and overweight/obesity status to inform evidence-based planning policy and practice strategies on how to modify the built environment to promote child health in future generations by increasing better opportunities for diet and activity.
