Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials characterized by their porous structures, formed through coordination bonding between metal ions/clusters and multidentate organic linkers. MOFs have emerged as a significant class of materials with applications in energy storage, CO 2 adsorption, and catalysis. This study serves as a brief introduction to the currently available synthesis methods of MOFs, aimed at acquainting beginners in the field of chemical engineering with the ongoing developments in MOF research. The discussed synthesis methods encompass traditional solvothermal/hydrothermal approaches, microwave synthesis of MOFs, one-pot synthesis, MOF nanocomposites, isothermal synthesis, and fluid-fluid synthesis. Notably, the MOF/NH 2 /Fe 3 O 4 combination exhibited enhanced adsorption capacity of 618 mg/g and retained an efficiency of over 90 %. This study displays a valuable technique for designing functional MOF hybrid composites. By combining MOFs with specific materials, numerous advantages can be achieved in the newly created compounds (MOF composites), including synergistic effects beneficial in catalytic applications, and overcoming the challenges associated with using bare MOFs.

Abstract:The increasing demands of energy and environmental concerns have motivated researchers to cultivate renewable energy resources for replacing conventional fossil fuels. The modern energy conversion and storage devices required high efficient and stable electrocatalysts to fulfil the market demands. In previous years, we are witness for considerable developments of scientific attention in Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) and their derived nanomaterials in electrocatalysis. In current review article, we have discussed the progress of optimistic strategies and approaches for the manufacturing of MOF-derived functional materials and their presentation as electrocatalysts for significant energy related reactions. MOFs functioning as a self-sacrificing template bid different benefits for the preparation of metal nanostructures, metal oxides and carbon-abundant materials promoting through the porous structure, organic functionalities, abundance of metal sites and large surface area. Thorough study for the recent advancement in the MOF-derived materials, metal-coordinated N-doped carbons with single-atom active sites are emerging candidates for future commercial applications. However, there are some tasks that should be addressed, to attain improved, appreciative and controlled structural parameters for catalytic and chemical behavior.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks represent a porous class of materials that are build up from metal ions or oligonuclear metallic complexes and organic ligands. They can be considered as sub-class of coordination polymers and can be extended into one-dimension, two-dimensions, and three-dimensions. Depending on the size of the pores, MOFs are divided into nanoporous, mesoporous, and macroporous items. The latter two are usually amorphous. MOFs display high porosity, a large specific surface area, and high thermal stability due to the presence of coordination bonds. The pores can incorporate neutral molecules, such as solvent molecules, anions, and cations, depending on the overall charge of the MOF, gas molecules, and biomolecules. The structural diversity of the framework and the multifunctionality of the pores render this class of materials as candidates for a plethora of environmental and biomedical applications and also as catalysts, sensors, piezo/ferroelectric, thermoelectric, and magnetic materials. In the present review, the synthetic methods reported in the literature for preparing MOFs and their derived materials, and their potential applications in environment, energy, and biomedicine are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are a class of porous hybrid materials of metal ions linked by organic bridging ligands. These materials consist of different families of crystalline frameworks with metal ions and metal-ion clusters linked by the coordination bonds with suitable organic ligands. These porous materials possess high surface area, variable pore sizes, various functions, and excellent thermal stability. As a result, these unique and tailored MOF materials found varied applications in electrochemical sensor development. The review critically examines the approach to synthesizing a wide range of MOF compounds. The utilization of MOF in fabricating a small-scale sensor device demonstrates the ability to detect various water contaminants in aquatic environments. Moreover, it showcased an in-depth advancement in sensor and device development utilizing MOFs materials. The efficient use of electrochemical sensors is discussed critically and presents these studies’ challenges and future perspectives.

Abstract:In this era of incessant development and progress in the production of diverse class of chemical compounds, heterogeneous catalysis has become an integral part of the expeditious and efficient synthesis in view of the non-reusability of the homogenous catalysts. The quality and efficiency of the heterogeneous catalysts is essentially determined by their stability and availability of their well-defined active sites. In this regard, synthetically created metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered immense interest in the past decade, bringing favorable characteristics for their application as heterogeneous catalysts over other materials, such as zeolites. They comprise special organometallic coordination polymers having a cationic center and linkage with organic ligands giving rise to a stable crystalline porous cage-like structure. Because of their flexibility in redefining surface area, crystallinity, tunability, rich topology, porosity, and dispersity of active sites, they find numerous applications, catalysis being the more promising one. In this chapter, the basics of MOFs are introduced, their synthesis methods, typical characteristics along with limelight of their promising appliances as catalysts. Further, the salient advantages of MOFs over homogenous counterparts and conventional heterogeneous catalysts has been deliberated with limitations, and their future prospects in the field of catalysis.

Abstract:As a youthful family of crystalline porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), assembled by inorganic vertices (metal ions or clusters) and organic ligands, feature ultrahigh porosity, high surface area, and synthetic and structural tailorability, along with relatively easy synthesis, making them excellent candidates for a large number of applications. Recently, increasing research interest in the electrochemical fields with regard to the environment and energy has been received. Lots of MOFs have been designed, prepared, and used in electrochemical applications, exhibiting fascinating performances. Here, the rational fabrication of electrochemical-application-directed functional MOFs and MOF composites is appraised. The synthetic strategies for the enhancement of corres-ponding MOF electrochemical behaviors are summarized and the relationship between structure and electrochemical performance is discussed. It is expected that the summary will be helpful for the future development of related MOFs and MOF composites with an excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers, featuring crystalline porous structures, have been intensively employed as templates/precursors for the synthesis of diverse porous materials including porous carbons, metal-based compounds (such as metal oxides/carbides/phosphides) and their composites. The large surface area, high porosity and excellent tailorability of MOFs can be well inherited to their derivatives, making MOF-derived porous materials very promising for catalytic applications. Herein, we systematically summarize the versatile synthetic strategies to fabricate MOF-derived porous materials and give an overview on their recent progress on organic heterogeneous catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis. Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been broadly applied to numerous domains with a substantial surface area, tunable pore size, and multiple unsaturated metal sites. Recently, hollow MOFs have greatly attracted the scientific community due to their internal cavities and gradient pore structures. Hollow MOFs have a higher tunability, faster mass-transfer rates, and more accessible active sites when compared to traditional, solid MOFs. Hollow MOFs are also considered to be candidates for some functional material carriers. For example, composite materials such as hollow MOFs and metal nanoparticles, metal oxides, and enzymes have been prepared. These composite materials integrate the characteristics of hollow MOFs with functional materials and are broadly used in many aspects. This review describes the preparation strategies of hollow MOFs and their composites as well as their applications in organic catalysis, electrochemical sensing, and adsorption separation. Finally, we hope that this review provides meaningful knowledge about hollow-MOF composites and their derivatives and offers many valuable references to develop hollow-MOF-based applied materials.

Abstract:Metal‐organic framework electrocatalysts are reviewed including their design, synthesis and wide uses such as electrochemical reactions, electrocatalysis, and storage. Due to the increasing global energy demands, scarce fossil fuel supplies, and environmental issues, the pursued goals of energy technologies are being sustainable, more efficient, accessible, and produce near zero greenhouse gas emissions. Electrochemical water splitting is considered as a highly viable and eco‐friendly energy technology. Further, electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a cleaner strategy for CO2 utilization and conversion to stable energy (fuels). One of the critical issues in these cleaner technologies is the development of efficient and economical electrocatalyst. Among various materials, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are becoming increasingly popular because of their structural tunability, such as pre‐ and post‐ synthetic modifications, flexibility in ligand design and its functional groups, and incorporation of different metal nodes, that allows for the design of suitable MOFs with desired quality required for each process. In this review, the design of MOF was discussed for specific process together with different synthetic methods and their effects on the MOF properties. The MOFs as electrocatalysts were highlighted with their performances from the aspects of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and electrochemical CO2RR. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are nanostructured polycrystalline materials where metal particles or groups are connected by an organic substituent, known as a 'strut' or 'crosslinks' having large surface area, high permeability, adjustable porosity, and flexible performance. Understanding the interactions and arrangement of MOFs is crucial for efficiently and precisely developing high-performance materials for sustainable applications. In recent years, there has been significant research interest in MOFs as a highly adaptable material for developing renewable and alternative energy conservation and transformation technologies, addressing global pollution and the impending fuel issue. This article provides an overview of the synthesis methods, parameters and characteristics of materials related to MOFs. It also assesses the relationship between the structure and functionality, examining factors that can be manipulated to improve their photocatalytic activity. Various examples were used to classify and examine the practical uses of MOFs, providing researchers with a new viewpoint on the compositional interaction in materials using MOFs. Finally, this study comprehensively analyzes the emerging trends and unresolved challenges in MOFs research across various functionalities.

Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF) based semiconductor composites enhance the synergistic physio-chemical properties of pristine semiconducting materials. In general, MOFs are perceived as an attractive candidate for constructing new composite materials because of their facile synthesis, tuneable porosity, high surface area, populous active sites and surface functional groups. As such, many researchers have infused pure MOFs with other classes of materials such as supplementary MOFs, carbonaceous materials, oxides, metal NPs, quantum dots, polymers etc. to fabricate distinctive constructs with synergetic properties. Considering the accelerating development occurring in the field of 3D reticulated hybrid materials towards photocatalysis, it is quite essential to summarize and explore their vast possibilities. In this regard, we aim at performing an analysis of metal oxide integrated MOFs (MO@MOF) towards photocatalytic applications. Many researchers have been tempted to improve the functionalities of pristine MOFs by composite formation with metal oxides (such as UiO-66@WO3, Bi2O3@HKUST-1, ZnO@ZIF-8, Fe3O4@MIL-100 (Fe) etc.) and have reported its applications towards diverse areas of photo-catalysis. In this context, we have presented a holistic summarization focusing on the rational design, fabrication strategy, characterization aspects and underlying mechanistic charge dynamics of photocatalytic applications with metal oxide integrated metal organic frameworks.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are an emerging class of porous nanomaterials that have opened new research possibilities. The inherent characteristics of MOFs such as their large surface area, high porosity, tunable pore size, stability, facile synthetic strategies and catalytic nature have made them promising materials for enormous number of applications, including fuel storage, energy conversion, separation, and gas purification. Recently, their high potential as ideal platforms for biomolecule immobilization has been discovered. MOF-enzyme-based materials have attracted the attention of researchers from all fields with the expansion of MOFs development, paving way for the fabrication of bioelectrochemical devices with unique characteristics. MOFs-based bioelectrodes have steadily gained interest, wherein MOFs can be utilized for improved biomolecule immobilization, electrolyte membranes, fuel storage, biocatalysis and biosensing. Likewise, applications of MOFs in point-of-care diagnostics, including self-powered biosensors, are exponentially increasing. This paper reviews the current trends in the fabrication of MOFs-based bioelectrodes with emphasis on their applications in biosensors and biofuel cells.

Abstract:In tandem with the expansion of human civilization, there is a massive upward-trending graph depicting the production and consumption patterns of all non-renewable resources. This was once thought to be the largest threat to the planet's overall natural balance. To address this issue, the United Nations approved the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. The seventeen-objective SDGs from the most recent set emphasize rebuilding and mending the globe while utilizing resources as sustainably as possible. The aforementioned issues are fixed for some reasons. One of the many uses for Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) components is this. The use of organic supports or ligands to brace individual transition metal ions or clusters facilitates the synthesis of MOFs. However, some elements are not transitory. These materials, which are made by combining inorganic and organic structural components, have a high porosity and crystalline nature. To meet the requirements for developing sustainable goods and services, these components go through a ten-year process of re-engineering that integrates various developments in chemical engineering, chemical sciences, environmental engineering, and nanochemical sciences. Thus, the goal of this article is to give a thorough introduction to MOFs in a range of areas, such as energy conversion, storage, batteries, supercapacitors, green applications, biological aspects, and medical applications, along with an analysis of their benefits and drawbacks. These applications provide mitigation measures to protect and maintain environmental resources as much as possible. They are prepared with a consistent process, with sustainability as the primary focus.

Abstract:Owing to the growing demand in areas such as energy, environmental science, electro- and photoelectrocatalysis, different reactions such as HER (hydrogen evolution), OER (oxygen evolution), ORR (oxygen reduction), and CO2RR (CO2 reduction) represent attractive strategies to overcome the challenges in sustainable energy conversion and usage. The competition for introducing catalysts with higher performance and cost-efficiency in comparison to the previous systems based on noble metals is one of the most interesting directions in this field. By merging the advantages of inorganic and organic materials, MOFs (metal–organic frameworks) have gained an ample attention as highly versatile electro- and photoelectrocatalytic platforms. This is governed by the intricate features of MOFs including extraordinary surface area, exceptional porosity, tailorable pore size, vast structural and chemical tunability, and pre- and post-synthesis structural modifiability. In contrast to monometallic compounds, bimetallic MOFs (BMOFs) and their composites offer many advantages, including improved electrical conductivity, extended active sites, high charge capacity, and adjustable electrochemical activity. Metal-organic frameworks can also be combined with other electrochemically active materials, resulting in advanced composites with large specific area, increased electrical conductivity, and superiour dispersion. Besides, some BMOFs show an enhanced electrocatalytic activity under light irradiation, thus permitting their application as photoelectrocatalysts. The present review summarizes the state-of-the-art on bimetallic MOFs and derived composites for the main current types of electro- and photoelectrocatalytic applications. The study also aims to highlight the challenges and opportunities in this area, with a focus on future perspectives of such multimetallic compounds and materials, with a particular emphasis in the field of energy and electrophotocatalysis.

Abstract:Background Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are made by linking inorganic and organic units by strong bonds (reticular synthesis). The flexibility with which the constituents’ geometry, size, and functionality can be varied has led to more than 20,000 different MOFs being reported and studied within the past decade. The organic units are ditopic or polytopic organic carboxylates (and other similar negatively charged molecules), which, when linked to metal-containing units, yield architecturally robust crystalline MOF structures with a typical porosity of greater than 50% of the MOF crystal volume. The surface area values of such MOFs typically range from 1000 to 10,000 m 2 /g, thus exceeding those of traditional porous materials such as zeolites and carbons. To date, MOFs with permanent porosity are more extensive in their variety and multiplicity than any other class of porous materials. These aspects have made MOFs ideal candidates for storage of fuels (hydrogen and methane), capture of carbon dioxide, and catalysis applications, to mention a few. Advances The ability to vary the size and nature of MOF structures without changing their underlying topology gave rise to the isoreticular principle and its application in making MOFs with the largest pore aperture (98 Å) and lowest density (0.13 g/cm 3 ). This has allowed for the selective inclusion of large molecules (e.g., vitamin B 12 ) and proteins (e.g., green fluorescent protein) and the exploitation of the pores as reaction vessels. Along these lines, the thermal and chemical stability of many MOFs has made them amenable to postsynthetic covalent organic and metal-complex functionalization. These capabilities enable substantial enhancement of gas storage in MOFs and have led to their extensive study in the catalysis of organic reactions, activation of small molecules (hydrogen, methane, and water), gas separation, biomedical imaging, and proton, electron, and ion conduction. At present, methods are being developed for making nanocrystals and supercrystals of MOFs for their incorporation into devices. Outlook The precise control over the assembly of MOFs is expected to propel this field further into new realms of synthetic chemistry in which far more sophisticated materials may be accessed. For example, materials can be envisaged as having (i) compartments linked together to operate separately, yet function synergistically; (ii) dexterity to carry out parallel operations; (iii) ability to count, sort, and code information; and (iv) capability of dynamics with high fidelity. Efforts in this direction are already being undertaken through the introduction of a large number of different functional groups within the pores of MOFs. This yields multivariate frameworks in which the varying arrangement of functionalities gives rise to materials that offer a synergistic combination of properties. Future work will involve the assembly of chemical structures from many different types of building unit, such that the structures’ function is dictated by the heterogeneity of the specific arrangement of their constituents.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with high surface area and tunable chemical structures have attracted tremendous attention. Recently, there has been increasing interest in deriving advanced materials from MOFs for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. This progress report highlights recent breakthroughs in electrocatalysis by using MOF‐based novel catalysts, such as in oxygen reduction and evolution, hydrogen evolution and carbon dioxide reduction. The advantages of preparing electrocatalysts from MOFs are introduced and discussed. Then, the development of MOF derived electrocatalysis‐active products, such as heteroatom‐doped carbon, metal oxide (MO), metal sulfide (MS), metal carbide (MC), metal phosphide (MP) and their hybrids with carbon, are summarized. The detailed functions of these materials in representative electrocatalysis systems are also reviewed. The demonstrated examples will provide understanding in preparing highly active and stable electrocatalysts. The progress report concludes with the future applications of MOF‐based materials in the field of electrocatalysis.

The availability of broad range of metal centres and type of organic linkers gives us opportunity for tailoring physical and chemical properties of MOFs. These modified MOFs opens up new channels for the customization of new devices needed for specific purposes. Though MOFs have been explored for significant applications in different sectors such as gas storage, proton conduction, biotechnological, biomedical sciences, catalysis, and separation, but drug delivery and the sensing applications has been taken exclusively at the manuscript. So, this article entails an overview of various synthetic methodology of low dimensional MOFs such as 1D and 2-D MOFs, and also focuses on their applications in sensing and drug delivery. This stems from their remarkable catalytic chemistry and their compatibility with a broad spectrum of materials. Furthermore, the 2-D layered structure of MOFs and their distinctive coordination of metal ions with organic ligands have emerging interest in the recent years.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have seen rapid expansion in the scientific community during the last two decades. This type of crystalline material has a great degree of structural and functional tunability not found in other porous materials such as activated carbons, and zeolites. Numerous MOFs have demonstrated themselves to be viable options in a variety of sectors due to their larger surface area, enormous pore size, crystalline structure, and tunability. MOFs are ideal candidate materials to resolve many everlasting societal issues about energy and environmental sustainability and beyond due to their structural modularity (e.g., use of different metals, post-synthetic modifications, reticular chemistry, etc.) and exceptionally controlled porosity. MOFs are indispensable across numerous applications, particularly in the removal of contaminants and emerging micropollutants from wastewater. MOFs enable a wide range of multifaceted applications by catalyzing various reactions for increasing adsorption capacity, sensing, drug delivery, and water disinfection, and thus making major contributions in several fields. This review focuses on the basics of MOFs, their classification and structural features, types, various synthetic methods, characterization, factors affecting and the applications of MOF and its nanocomposites towards a wide range of applications including, drug delivery, catalysis, adsorption, biosensing and killing/inactivation of a wide range of microorganisms including fungi, bacteria, and viruses. In conclusion, knowing MOF synthesis including green synthesis, characterization, influencing parameters, and applications is essential to capitalizing on their special qualities and expanding its application across a range of industries, ultimately resulting in creative responses to urgent global issues.

Abstract:Photocatalysis, or photo-electrocatalysis technology, is a clean and renewable energy conversion method that harnesses solar energy to generate chemical energy, offering an effective solution to address our urgent energy crisis and environmental challenges. Therefore, the development of efficient and stable photocatalysts is of paramount importance. In comparison with inorganic semiconductors, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), as a porous material composed of metal nodes and organic connectors, has the characteristics of large specific surface area, excellent adjustability, good flexibility and complex topological structure. Among these MOFs, Fe-containing MOFs (Fe-MOFs) exhibit advantages including low cost, low toxicity, mild reaction conditions, diverse structure, wide availability in nature, easy synthesis and stable performance, which make them highly promising material for photocatalysis applications. Therefore, this contribution presents a comprehensive review on the photocatalytic and photo-electrocatalytic applications of Fe-MOFs encompassing mono/multi-metallic MOFs as well as their derivatives. Additionally, the challenges associated with such applications are also discussed. The primary objective behind this discussion is to provide an in-depth understanding of Fe-MOFs while facilitating the development of practical applications.

Abstract:Metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles, also called porous coordination polymers, are a major part of nanomaterials science, and their role in catalysis is becoming central. The extraordinary variability and richness of their structures afford engineering synergies between the metal nodes, functional linkers, encapsulated substrates, or nanoparticles for multiple and selective heterogeneous interactions and activations in these MOF-based nanocatalysts. Pyrolysis of MOF-nanoparticle composites forms highly porous N- or P-doped graphitized MOF-derived nanomaterials that are increasingly used as efficient catalysts especially in electro- and photocatalysis. This review first briefly summarizes this background of MOF nanoparticle catalysis and then comprehensively reviews the fast-growing literature reported during the last years. The major parts are catalysis of organic and molecular reactions, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and views of prospects. Major challenges of our society are addressed using these well-defined heterogeneous catalysts in the fields of synthesis, energy, and environment. In spite of the many achievements, enormous progress is still necessary to improve our understanding of the processes involved beyond the proof-of-concept, particularly for selective methane oxidation, hydrogen production, water splitting, CO<sub>2</sub> reduction to methanol, nitrogen fixation, and water depollution.
