Abstract:Background: Quantification of cardiac structure and function is essential for diagnostic interpretation and clinical decision making. We sought to establish cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) reference values of left and right ventricular (LV and RV) morphology and function based on a large sample of healthy Chinese adults. Methods: Five hundred fifty validated healthy Chinese adults (aged 21–70 years; 323 men) free of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity were included in this study. All the subjects were stratified by gender (men and women) and age decades. On cine CMR, measurements of biventricular end-diastolic, end-systolic, and stroke volumes (EDV, ESV, and SV), ejection fraction (EF), and end-diastolic LV wall thickness (LVWT) and mass (LVM) were obtained. Results: Men had greater LVEDV (111.6 ± 19.8 vs. 94.6 ± 15.6 ml), LVESV (36.5 ± 9.8 vs. 28.2 ± 7.9 ml), LVM (121.1 ± 19.9 vs. 86.1 ± 14.5 g), global end-diastolic LVWT (8.1 ± 1.1 vs. 6.7 ± 1.0 mm), RVEDV (128.0 ± 23.6 vs. 101.7 ± 17.0 ml), and RVESV (53.5 ± 13.7 vs. 36.8 ± 8.9 ml), while women had greater LVEF (67.5 ± 5.4 vs. 70.4 ± 5.7%) and RVEF (58.5 ± 5.2 vs. 64.0 ± 5.3%) (all p < 0.001). For both men and women, age was negatively correlated with LVEDV ( r = −0.31 and r = −0.32), LVESV ( r = −0.37 and r = −0.47), RVEDV ( r = −0.31 and r = −0.29), and RVESV ( r = −0.33 and r = −0.44), while it was positively correlated with LVEF ( r = 0.28 and r = 0.43) and RVEF ( r = 0.28 and r = 0.41) (all p < 0.001). Aging was associated with increasing global end-diastolic LVWT and LVM/LVEDV in both sexes (all p < 0.001). Older age was associated with increasing LVM only in women ( r = 0.36, p < 0.001), not in men ( r = 0.05, p = 0.359). Conclusions: We systematically provide age-, sex-, and body size-specific CMR reference values for biventricular morphology and function based on a large sample of healthy Chinese adults. Biventricular structure and function are significantly associated with age and sex.

Abstract:Background Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reference ranges for ventricular morphology and function in the Chinese population are lacking. Purpose To establish the MRI reference ranges of left and right ventricular (LV and RV) morphology and function based on a large multicenter cohort. Study Type Prospective. Population One thousand and twelve healthy Chinese Han adults. Field Strength/Sequence Balanced steady‐state free procession cine sequence at 3.0 T. Assessment Biventricular end‐diastolic, end‐systolic, stroke volume, and ejection fraction (EDV, ESV, SV, and EF), LV mass (LVM), end‐diastolic and end‐systolic dimension (LVEDD and LVESD), anteroseptal wall thickness (AS), and posterolateral wall thickness (PL) were measured. Body surface area (BSA) and height were used to index biventricular parameters. Parameters were compared between age groups and sex. Statistical Tests Independent‐samples t‐tests or Mann–Whitney U test to compare mean values between sexes; ANOVA or Kruskal–Wallis test to compare mean values among age groups; linear regression to assess the relationships between cardiac parameters and age (correlation coefficient, r). A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The biventricular volumes, LVM, LVEDD, RVEDV/LVEDV ratio, LVESD, AS, and PL were significantly greater in males than in females, even after indexing to BSA or height, while LVEF and RVEF were significantly lower in males than in females. For both sexes, age was significantly negatively correlated with biventricular volumes (male and female: LVEDV [r = −0.491; r = −0.373], LVESV [r = −0.194; r = −0.184], RVEDV [r = −0.639; r = −0.506], RVESV [r = −0.270; r = −0.223]), with similar correlations after BSA normalization. LVEF (r = 0.043) and RVEF (r = 0.033) showed a significant correlation with age in females, but not in males (P = 0.889; P = 0.282). Data Conclusion MRI reference ranges for biventricular morphology and function in Chinese adults are presented and show significant associations with age and sex. Abstract:BACKGROUND: The left and right atrial (LA and RA) size and function are tightly linked to the morbidity and mortality of multiple cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to establish cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) reference values for LA and RA volumes and phasic function based on a large sample of healthy Chinese adults.METHODS: 408 validated healthy Chinese adults (54% men; aged 21-70 years) were included. LA and RA maximum, minimum, and pre-atrial contraction volumes (Vmax, Vmin, and Vpac); total, passive, and booster emptying fractions (EF total, EF passive, and EF booster); and total, passive, and active emptying volumes (TEV, PEV, and AEV) were measured on cine CMR. Normal reference values were calculated and were stratified by sex and age decades.RESULTS: Men demonstrated greater LAVmax, LAVmin, LAVpac, LAPEV, RAVmax, RAVmin, RAVpac, RATEV, and RAAEV, while women had higher LAEF total, LAEF booster, RAEF total, RAEF passive, and RAEF booster (all p < 0.05). Age was positively correlated with LAVpac and RAVpac in both sexes but was positively correlated with LAVmax, LAVmin, RAVmax, and RAVmin only in women (all p < 0.05). For both sexes, aging was associated with decreased LAEF total, LAEF passive, RAEF total, and RAEF passive, but increased LAEF booster (all p < 0.05).CONCLUSION: We systematically provide age- and sex-specific CMR reference values for LA and RA volumes and phasic function based on a large sample of healthy Chinese adults with a wide age range. Both age and sex are closely associated with biatrial volumes and function.

Abstract:Background Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (cardiac MR) reference ranges in Chinese children are lacking. Purpose To establish age‐ and sex‐specific reference ranges for cardiac MR parameters in a cohort of healthy Chinese children. Study Type Retrospective. Subjects One hundred ninety‐six healthy children (mean age 9.5 ± 3.6 years, 111 boys). Field Strength/Sequence 1.5 T; balanced steady‐state free precession. Assessment Biventricular volume and ejection fractions (EF), left atrial (LA) volume, right atrial (RA) area, left ventricular (LV) mass and thickness, aortic root (AR), and main pulmonary artery (MPA) dimensions were measured. Parameters were compared between age groups and sex. The relationships between parameters and age, body mass index (BMI) and body surface area (BSA) were investigated. Statistical Tests Independent‐samples t tests; Pearson's correlation. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Generally, boys exhibited greater absolute measurements of LV volume (end‐diastolic: 94.4 ± 29.5 vs. 81.3 ± 31.0 mL), LA volume (end‐diastolic: 42.6 ± 13.4 vs. 38.0 ± 13.3 mL), RA area (end‐diastolic: 11.6 ± 2.5 vs. 10.8 ± 2.6 cm2), LV thickness (base: 4.4 ± 1.1 vs. 3.8 ± 0.9 mm), AR dimensions (annuls: 16.3 ± 2.7 vs. 15.0 ± 2.8 mm), and MPA dimensions (14.3 ± 2.3 vs. 13.1 ± 2.4 mm) than girls did. However, these differences were not observed when the measurements were normalized to BSA (LV volume: 75.3 ± 11.7 vs. 71.9 ± 12.3 mL/m2, P = 0.052; LA volume: 34.8 ± 8.9 vs. 34.5 ± 7.6 mL/m2, P = 0.783; RA area: 9.7 ± 2.3 vs. 10.2 ± 2.3 cm2/m2, P = 0.107; LV thickness: 3.6 ± 0.7 vs. 3.6 ± 0.9 mm/m2, P = 0.990; AR: 13.6 ± 2.7 vs. 14.3 ± 3.4 mm/m2, P = 0.108; MPA: 11.9 ± 2.3 vs. 12.4 ± 2.4 mm/m2, P = 0.118). Boys had greater RV volume (end‐diastolic: 98.7 ± 33.5 vs. 82.7 ± 33.1 mL) and LV mass (52.6 ± 20.2 vs. 41.4 ± 16.0 g) compared to girls, irrespective of whether the values were indexed or not for BSA. Additionally, there were significant associations between age, BMI, and BSA with biventricular volume, LA volume, RA area, LV mass and thickness, AR and MPA dimensions in both boys and girls. Unravelling the intricacies of left ventricular haemodynamic forces: age and gender-specific normative values assessed by cardiac MRI in healthy adults

Abstract:Aims: Haemodynamic forces (HDFs) provided a feasible method to early detect cardiac mechanical abnormalities by estimating the intraventricular pressure gradients. The novel advances in assessment of HDFs using routine cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) cines shed new light on detection of preclinical dysfunction. However, definition of normal values for this new technique is the prerequisite for application in the clinic. Methods and results: A total of 218 healthy volunteers [38.1 years ± 11.1; 111 male (50.9%)] were recruited and underwent CMR examinations with a 3.0T scanner. Balanced steady state free precession breath hold cine images were acquired, and HDF assessments were performed based on strain analysis. The normal values of longitudinal and transversal HDF strength [root mean square (RMS)] and ratio of transversal to longitudinal HDF were all evaluated in overall population as well as in both genders and in age-specific groups. The longitudinal RMS values (%) of HDFs were significantly higher in women (P < 0.05). Moreover, the HDF amplitudes significantly decreased with ageing in entire heartbeat, systole, diastole, systolic/diastolic transition, and diastolic deceleration, while increased in atrial thrust. In multivariable linear regression analysis, age, heart rate, and global longitudinal strain emerged as independent predictors of the amplitudes of longitudinal HDFs in entire heartbeat and systole, while left ventricular end-diastole volume index was also independently associated with longitudinal HDFs in diastole and diastolic deceleration (P < 0.05 for all). Conclusion: Our study provided comprehensive normal values of HDF assessments using CMR as well as presented with specific age and sex stratification. HDF analyses can be performed with excellent intra- and inter-observer reproducibility.

Abstract:Abstract. We examined possible age- and gender-specific differences in the function and mass of left (LV) and right (RV) ventricles in 36 healthy volunteers using cine gradient-recalled echo magnetic resonance imaging. Subjects were divided into four groups (nine men and nine women in each): men aged under 45 years (32 ± 7), women aged under 45 (27 ± 6), men aged over 45 (59 ± 8), and women aged over 45 (57 ± 9). Functional analysis of cardiac volume and mass and of LV wall motion was performed by manual segmentation of the endocardial and epicardial borders of the end-diastolic and end-systolic frame; both absolute and normalized (per square meter body surface area) values were evaluated. With age there was a significant decrease in both absolute and normalized LV and RV chamber volumes (EDV, ESV), while LV and RV masses remained unchanged. Gender-specific differences were found in cardiac mass and volume (for men and women, respectively: LV mass, 155 ± 18 and 110 ± 16 g; LV EDV, 118 ± 27 and 96 ± 21 ml; LV ESV, 40 ± 13 and 29 ± 9 ml; RV mass, 52 ± 10 and 39 ± 5 g; RV EDV, 131 ± 28 and 100 ± 23 ml; RV ESV, 53 ± 17 and 33 ± 15 ml). Normalization to body surface area eliminated differences in LV volumes but not those in LV mass, RV mass, or RV function. Functional parameters such as cardiac output and LV ejection fraction showed nonsignificant or only slight differences and were thus largely independent of age and gender. Intra- and interobserver variability ranged between 1.4 % and 5.9 % for all parameters. Cine magnetic resonance imaging thus shows age- and gender-specific differences in cardiac function, and therefore the evaluation of cardiac function in patients should consider age- and gender-matched normative values.

Abstract:Current guidelines encourage large studies in a diverse population to establish normal reference ranges for three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography for different ethnic groups. This study was designed to establish the normal values of 3D-left ventricular (LV) and left atrial (LA) volume and function in a nationwide, population-based cohort of healthy Han Chinese adults. A total of 1117 healthy volunteers aged 18–89 years were enrolled from 28 collaborating laboratories in China. Two sets of 3D echocardiographic instruments were used, and full-volume echocardiographic images were recorded and transmitted to a core laboratory for image analysis with a vendor-independent off-line workstation. Finally, 866 volunteers (mean age of 48.4 years, 402 men) were qualified for final analysis. Most parameters exhibited substantial differences between different sex and age groups, even after indexation by body surface area. The normal ranges of 3D-LV and 3D-LA volume and function differed from those recommended by the American Society of Echocardiography and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging guidelines, presented by the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) study, and from the 2D values in the EMINCA study. The normal reference values of 3D echocardiography-derived LV and LA volume and function were established for the first time in healthy Han Chinese adults. Normal ranges of 3D-LV and 3D-LA echocardiographic measurements stratified with sex, age, and race should be recommended for clinical applications.

Solid normal reference ranges are compulsory for accurate interpretation in individual patients, but previous studies have yielded mixed conclusions regarding the effects of age, sex, and/or race. The present report from the World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography study focuses on two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) measures of LA structure and function, with subgroup analysis by age, sex, and race.Transthoracic 2D and 3D echocardiographic images were obtained in 1,765 healthy individuals (901 men, 864 women) evenly distributed among age subgroups: 18 to 40 years (n = 745), 41 to 65 years (n = 618), and >65 years (n = 402); the racial distribution was 38.4% white, 39.9% Asian, and 9.7% black. Images were analyzed using dedicated LA analysis software to measure LA volumes and phasic function from 3D volume and 2D strain curves.Three-dimensional maximum and minimum LA volumes adjusted for body surface area were nearly identical for men and women, but women demonstrated higher 3D total and passive emptying fractions (EFs). Two-dimensional reservoir strain was similar for both sexes. Age was associated with an incremental rise in LA volumes alongside characteristic shifts in functional indices. Total 2D EF and reservoir and conduit strain varied inversely with age, counteracted by higher booster strain, with a greater magnitude of effect in women. Active 3D EF was significantly higher, while total and passive EFs decreased with age. Interracial differences were noted in LA volumes, without substantial differences in functional indices.Although similar normal values for LA volumes and strain can be applied to both sexes, meaningful differences in LA size occur with aging. Indices of function also shift with age, with a compensatory rise in booster function, which may serve to counteract observed lower total and passive EFs. Defining age-associated normal values may help differentiate age-associated "healthy" LA aging from pathologic processes.

Abstract:Background Aging as a major non-modifiable cardiac risk factor challenges future cardiovascular medicine and economic demands, which requires further assessments addressing physiological age-associated cardiac changes. Objectives Using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), this study aims to characterize sex-specific ventricular adaptations during healthy aging. Methods The population included healthy volunteers who underwent CMR at 1.5 or 3 Tesla scanners applying cine-imaging with a short-axis coverage of the left (LV) and right (RV) ventricle. The cohort was divided by sex (female and male) and age (subgroups in years): 1 (19–29), 2 (30–39), 3 (40–49), and 4 (≥50). Cardiac adaptations were quantitatively assessed by CMR indices. Results After the exclusion of missing or poor-quality CMR datasets or diagnosed disease, 140 of 203 volunteers were part of the final analysis. Women generally had smaller ventricular dimensions and LV mass, but higher biventricular systolic function. There was a significant age-associated decrease in ventricular dimensions as well as a significant increase in LV mass-to-volume ratio (LV-MVR, concentricity) in both sexes (LV-MVR in g/ml: age group 1 vs. 4: females 0.50 vs. 0.57, p =0.016, males 0.56 vs. 0.67, p =0.024). LV stroke volume index decreased significantly with age in both sexes, but stronger for men than for women (in ml/m 2 : age group 1 vs. 4: females 51.76 vs. 41.94, p <0.001, males 55.31 vs. 40.78, p <0.001). Ventricular proportions (RV-to-LV-volume ratio) were constant between the age groups in both sexes. Conclusions In both sexes, healthy aging was associated with an increase in concentricity and a decline in ventricular dimensions. Abstract:Background: Reference values for morphological and functional parameters of the cardiovascular system in early life are relevant since they may help to identify young adults who fall outside the physiological range of arterial and cardiac ageing. This study provides age and sex specific reference values for aortic wall characteristics, cardiac function parameters and aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) in a population-based sample of healthy, young adults using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Materials and methods: In 131 randomly selected healthy, young adults aged between 25 and 35 years (mean age 31.8 years, 63 men) of the general-population based Atherosclerosis-Monitoring-and-Biomarker-measurements-In-The-YOuNg (AMBITYON) study, descending thoracic aortic dimensions and wall thickness, thoracic aortic PWV and cardiac function parameters were measured using a 3.0T MR-system. Age and sex specific reference values were generated using dedicated software. Differences in reference values between two age groups (25-30 and 30-35 years) and both sexes were tested. Results: Aortic diameters and areas were higher in the older age group (all p<0.007). Moreover, aortic dimensions, left ventricular mass, left and right ventricular volumes and cardiac output were lower in women than in men (all p<0.001). For mean and maximum aortic wall thickness, left and right ejection fraction and aortic PWV we did not observe a significant age or sex effect. Conclusion: This study provides age and sex specific reference values for cardiovascular MR parameters in healthy, young Caucasian adults. These may aid in MR guided pre-clinical identification of young adults who fall outside the physiological range of arterial and cardiac ageing.
Correlation Between Left Ventricular Myocardial Strain and Left Ventricular Geometry in Healthy Adults: a Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance-Feature Tracking Study

Abstract:This study was aimed to investigate the correlation between left ventricular (LV) myocardial strain and LV geometry in healthy adults using cardiovascular magnetic resonance-feature tracking (CMR-FT). 124 gender-matched healthy adults who underwent healthy checkup using CMR cine imaging were retrospectively analyzed. Peak global radial, circumferential, longitudinal strain (GRS, GCS and GLS) for left ventricle were measured. LV geometry was assessed by the ratio of LV mass (LVM) and end-diastolic volume (EDV). GRS, GCS and GLS were 34.18 ± 6.71%, − 22.17 ± 2.28%, − 14.76 ± 2.39% for men, and 33.40 ± 6.95%, − 22.49 ± 2.27%, − 15.72 ± 2.36% for women. Multiple linear regression showed that LVM/EDV was associated with decreased GLS (β = − 0.297, p = 0.005), but was not significantly associated with GRS and GCS (both p > 0.05). There was an increase in the magnitude of GRS, GCS and GLS with advancing age (β = 0.254, β = 0.466 and β = 0.313, all p < 0.05). Greater BMI was associated with decreased GRS, GCS and GLS (β = − 0.232, β = − 0. 249 and β = − 0.279, all p < 0.05). In conclusion, compared with GRS and GCS, GLS is more sensitive to assess LV concentric remodeling in healthy adults. GRS, GCS and GLS are all independently positively associated with age and negatively associated with BMI. Sex-based LV strain reference values for healthy Chinese adults are established.

Abstract:Background To facilitate the clinical use of cardiac T1ρ, it is important to understand the impact of age and sex on T1ρ values of the myocardium. Purpose To investigate the impact of age and gender on myocardial T1ρ values. Study Type Cross‐sectional. Population Two hundred ten healthy Han Chinese volunteers without cardiovascular risk factors (85 males, mean age 34.4 ± 12.5 years; 125 females, mean age 37.9 ± 14.8 years). Field Strength/Sequence 1.5 T; T1ρ‐prepared steady‐state free precession (T1ρ mapping) sequence. Assessment Basal, mid, and apical short‐axis left ventricular T1ρ maps were acquired. T1ρ maps acquired with spin‐lock frequencies of 5 and 400 Hz were subtracted to create a myocardial fibrosis index (mFI) map. T1ρ and mFI values across different age decades, sex, and slice locations were compared. Statistical Tests Shapiro–Wilk test, Student's t test, Mann–Whitney U test, linear regression analysis, one‐way analysis of variance and intraclass correlation coefficient. Significance: P value <0.05. Results Women had significantly higher T1ρ and mFI values than men (50.3 ± 2.0 msec vs. 47.7 ± 2.4 msec and 4.7 ± 1.0 msec vs. 4.3 ± 1.1 msec, respectively). Additionally, in males and females combined, there was a significant positive but weak correlation between T1ρ values and age (r = 0.27), while no correlation was observed between the mFI values and age (P = 0.969). Data Conclusion We report potential reference values for cardiac T1ρ by sex, age distribution, and slice location in a Chinese population. Abstract:Purpose: We aimed to investigate the impacts of age, gender, and race on aortic dimensions in healthy adults. Methods: We analyzed data from 3 large population-based sample studies, including Chinese Echocardiographic Measurements in Normal Chinese Adults, Japanese the Normal Values for Echocardiographic Measurements Project, and European Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography, to compare the two-dimensional echocardiography-derived aortic diameters at different levels and to explore the effects of age, gender, and race on aortic measurements. We also compared the values corrected by body surface area (BSA) or height. Results: The results are as follows: (1) Aortic diameters showed positive correlations with age ( r =0.12-0.42, P <0.05), and there were significant inter-age group differences before and after indexing to BSA ( P <0.05); (2) Men had greater measurements of aortic diameters than women, with the differences being the same when indexed to height. However, indexing to BSA reversed the differences; (3) The aortic diameters at annulus (Ao-a) and sinus (Ao-s) levels were very close with minor differences between the Chinese and Japanese regardless of whether BSA was used for correction; and (4) The aortic measurements at Ao-s and proximal ascending aorta (Ao-asc) levels in the Chinese were significantly lower than in the Europeans for both genders, with the differences remaining the same even after indexing to BSA or height ( P <0.05). Conclusion: Aortic dimensions vary with age and gender, and there are significant differences between races or ethnicities even when stratified by gender and age. The indexation by BSA or height cannot eliminate these differences. Therefore, age-specific, gender-specific, race-specific, and nationality-specific reference values may be more appropriate at present for clinical practice to avoid misdiagnosis and misclassification of aortic dilation.

Abstract:AIM To provide reference values of the dimensions of the left and right atrium (RA) obtained using the biplane and monoplane methods, respectively, on two- and four-chamber views, which represent the standard projections acquired in clinical practice, and correlation with body surface area (BSA), age, and gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS Healthy volunteers, M:F = 1:1, including five participants per gender and age decile from 20 to 70 years, who underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) were enrolled prospectively. Normal atrial reference values were calculated for male and female subpopulations and stratified by age. Atrial areas and volumes were assessed both as absolute values and indexed to BSA. Differences among genders and correlation with age were assessed. Intra- and interobserver reproducibility were assessed in a subpopulation. RESULTS Fifty participants (mean age 43.3 ± 14 years, 25 men) were evaluated. Image analysis took 0.85 for all datasets). RA areas were significantly higher in males ( p= 0.0001). The left atrial (LA) surface did not show significant differences among genders. Atrial areas normalised to BSA did not show significant gender differences. Both right and left absolute atrial volumes turned out to be significantly higher in males ( p= 0.0001 and p= 0.0047, respectively), and normalised to BSA remained significantly different only for the RA ( p= 0.0006). Neither atrial volume nor areas showed significant correlation with age. CONCLUSIONS The monoplane method is a fast and reproducible technique to assess atrial dimensions. Absolute atrial dimensions show significant variations among genders. Gender-specific reference ranges for atrial dimensions are recommended.

Abstract:Background: Establishing appropriate reference value limits of left ventricular (LV) functional parameters is fundamental for the assessment of cardiac function. At present, there are no reports aimed at establishing reference limits using gated myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in mainland China. Methods: A total of 175 consecutive patients who were defined as low-risk coronary artery disease patients underwent stress Technetium-99m sestamibi (99mTc-MIBI)-gated myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. The LV ejection fraction (EF), end-diastolic volume (EDV), and end-systolic volume (ESV) were obtained by 3 quantitative algorithms: quantitative-gated SPECT, emory cardiac toolbox, and 4-dimensional model SPECT, respectively. The threshold values were obtained using Gaussian distribution or percentiles. The influence of gender, age, and weight on cardiac functional parameters was analyzed by multiple regressions for linear models. Results: For males, the lower reference limits of EF were 52%, 63%, and 58%, respectively; and the upper limits of EDV/ESV were 106/45, 152/55, and 135/55 mL, respectively. For females, the lower reference limits of EF were 58%, 66%, and 65%, respectively; and the upper limits of EDV/ESV were 73/27, 105/31, and 88/29 mL, respectively. Compared to females, males had greater cardiac volume values and lower mean EF values. Bland-Altman plots revealed that the cardiac function parameters calculated by the three quantitative algorithms were in high agreement. Conclusions: In this study, the reference limits of cardiac parameters calculated by the 3 methods based on single-center data in China were preliminarily established. The threshold values determined by three quantitative algorithms were not interchangeable but were highly correlated.

Abstract:Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, Volume 17, Issue 2, Page e016090, February 1, 2024. BACKGROUND:Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) reference values are relied upon to accurately diagnose left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) pathologies. To date, reference values have been derived from modest sample sizes with limited patient diversity and attention to 1 but not both commonly used tracing techniques for papillary muscles and trabeculations. We sought to overcome these limitations by meta-analyzing normal reference values for CMR parameters stemming from multiple countries, vendors, analysts, and patient populations.METHODS:We comprehensively extracted published and unpublished data from studies reporting CMR parameters in healthy adults. A steady-state free-precession short-axis stack at 1.5T or 3T was used to trace either counting the papillary muscles and trabeculations in the LV volume or mass. We used a novel Bayesian hierarchical meta-analysis model to derive the pooled lower and upper reference values for each CMR parameter. Our model accounted for the expected differences between tracing techniques by including informative prior distributions from a large external data set.RESULTS:A total of 254 studies from 25 different countries were systematically reviewed, representing 12 812 healthy adults, of which 52 were meta-analyzed. For LV parameters counting papillary muscles and trabeculations in the LV volume, pooled normative reference ranges in men and women, respectively, were as follows: LV ejection fraction of 52% to 73% and 54% to 75%, LV end-diastolic volume index of 60 to 109 and 56 to 96 mL/m2, LV end-systolic volume index of 18 to 45 and 16 to 38 mL/m2, and LV mass index of 41 to 76 and 33 to 57 g/m2. For LV parameters counting papillary muscles and trabeculations in the LV mass, pooled normative reference ranges in men and women, respectively, were as follows: LV ejection fraction of 57% to 74% and 57% to 75%, LV end-diastolic volume index of 60 to 97 and 55 to 88 mL/m2, LV end-systolic volume index of 18 to 37 and 15 to 34 mL/m2, and LV mass index of 50 to 83 and 38 to 65 g/m2. For RV parameters, pooled normative reference ranges in men and women, respectively, were as follows: RV ejection fraction of 47% to 68% and 49% to 71%, RV end-diastolic volume index of 64 to 115 and 57 to 99 mL/m2, RV end-systolic volume index of 23 to 52 and 18 to 42 mL/m2, and RV mass index of 14 to 29 and 13 to 25 g/m2.CONCLUSIONS:Our Bayesian hierarchical meta-analysis provides normative reference values for CMR parameters of LV and RV size, systolic function, and mass, encompassing both tracing techniques across a diverse multinational sample of healthy men and women.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Current echocardiographic normal reference values and nomograms in healthy adults are commonly normalized by body surface area (BSA) with simple linear or isometric corrections. However, various lines of evidence suggest this method might be flawed. In this study, we established the normative data of left ventricular internal diameter (LViD) by BSA-correlated regression equations with the calculation of Z-scores in healthy Han Chinese adults.METHODS: A total of 577 healthy Han Chinese adults were enrolled (age 44.4±13.0 years, 43% male and 57% female). LViD was acquired from two-dimensional-guided M-mode echocardiography on all participants from the parasternal long-axis view. Linear and nonlinear regression models were built to correlate LViD with BSA in different sexes and age groups. The best-fit models and nomograms are presented with the Z-scores calculated by the models. Residual analysis and reproducibility were evaluated in each best-fit model for reliability.RESULTS: Body surface area showed polynomial (quadric) correlations with left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVDd, R<sup>2</sup>=0.615, P<0.001) and left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVDs, R<sup>2</sup>=0.540, P<0.001). Corresponding regression equations and nomograms for computing the Z-scores of the overall LViD and BSA/sex-specific and BSA/age-specific reference values are presented. Reproducibility, residual distribution, autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity were confirmed in each model.CONCLUSIONS: This study proposes a comprehensive approach for normal reference values of left ventricular internal diameters with echocardiographic nomograms in healthy Han Chinese adults, which may offer a more precise way to diagnose cardiovascular disease in clinical practice.

Abstract:Background Few studies have examined the reference value of the left ventricular structure and function in preterm infants. This study was designed to establish a point-of-care echocardiographic reference range of left ventricular structure and function based on different gestational age, weight, and body surface area (BSA) for preterm infants within 7 days after birth. Methods We retrospectively studied 489 patients with traditional echocardiographic data of left ventricular (LV) M-mode: LV end diastolic dimensions (LVED), LV end systolic dimension (LVES), end-diastolic interventricular septal thickness (IVSd), end diastolic LV posterior wall thickness (LVPWd), left atrial (LA) and aortic root (AO) diameters, and index of LA/AO, LV ejection fraction (LVEF), LV fractional shortening (LVFS), and pulsed wave Doppler: aortic valve flow rate (AV), peak mitral valve flow rate E(MV-E), peak mitral valve flow rate A(MV-A), and MV-E/A. The LV dimensions and the maximum blood flow velocities of the aortic valves and mitral valves according to gestational age, birth weight, and body surface area (BSA) are presented in percentiles tables. Percentile curves of aforesaid four cardiac measurements (LVED, LA diameter (LAD), MV-E, MV-E/A) using the R language Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape (GAMLSS) method were developed according to different gestational ages and weights. Results Measurements of all cardiac dimensions and Doppler maximum velocities of AV, MV-E, and MV-E/A showed a correlation with gestational age, weight, and BSA. LVED, LAD, MV-E, and MV-E/A showed a trend of increasing values with gestational age and weight on the percentile curves. Conclusion The percentile tables and graphs of these point-of-care echocardiographic data can provide reliable reference data for Chinese neonates. Normative values are recommended as a source of reference data for the identification of potentially abnormal echocardiography.
