Abstract:A set of chitosan/ε-polylysine (ε-PL) bionanocomposite films were prepared by a simple in situ self-assembly technique using sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) as cross-linking agent. The physical, mechanical, structural, and antimicrobial properties of these films were investigated. Fourier infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the introduction of TPP promoted the formation of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions among functional groups of chitosan or ε-PL, which improved the tensile strength and decreased the water solubility, water vapor permeability and surface wettability of films. On the other hand, the incorporation of ε-PL weakened the bionanocomposite film' structure and integrity, resulting in a decrease trend of films' mechanical and barrier properties. More importantly, the bionanocomposite films exhibited excellent antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli and S. aureus by the increasing ratio of ε-PL. And ε-PL presented a sustained release from the films, which was closely related to TPP concentration. Results of this study suggested that chitosan/ε-PL films could be used as antimicrobial bio-material and have great potential in food industry.

Abstract:For the applications of polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) of chitosan and sodium cellulose sulfate (NaCS) as the controlled release drug carrier, the biodegradation characteristics of chitosan, NaCS and chitosan/NaCS PEC films were investigated with pepsin, trypsin, lipase, α-amylase, and cellulase. The results showed that pepsin, amylase, trypsin and lipase have the appreciable hydrolytic activity to chitosan, but cannot degrade NaCS. However, cellulase showed high cellulosic activity and low chitosanolytic activity. For the hydrolysis of chitosan/NaCS films, the degradation rates were greatly influenced by the molecular weights of chitosan and NaCS. In vitro tests showed that different formulations caused diverse disintegration time of the films through the gastrointestinal tract. The results indicated the PEC based on chitosan and NaCS showed good potential for the gastrointestinal delivery systems.

Abstract:This study aimed to understand the structure-property relationship in chitosan (CHI) based layer-by-layer (LbL) films and to correlate the surface properties with the biological characteristics of the multilayers. LbL films of CHI were prepared using two different types of polyacids, i.e. a polyphenol, tannic acid (TA) and a polycarboxylic acid, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The chemical nature and topology of the polyacid was found to be critical on LbL growth, stability under physiologically related conditions, surface morphology, wettability and drug release properties of the multilayers. The differences in surface of the films and surface properties provided remarkably different biological properties such as anti-adhesiveness against protein adsorption and antibacterial activity for Ciprofloxacin (CIP) incorporated films against Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes). Linearly growing TA/CHI films with relatively smooth surfaces resisted more against protein adsorption when the topmost layer and the protein carried like charges. On the other hand, exponentially growing PAA/CHI multilayers did not exhibit antiadhesive behaviour. Thick and loose PAA/CHI multilayers were able to release higher amount of CIP, thus presented enhanced antibacterial activity compared to thin and more intense TA/CHI films. Finally, we showed that pH affected the extent of association among the layers as well as drug release and antibacterial properties of the films. Our findings showed that TA/CHI films are more promising as antiadhesive surfaces, whereas PAA/CHI multilayers are more suitable for preparation of antibacterial surfaces. The fundamental findings of this study may form a basis for preparation of thin films for drug delivery applications and modification of biomaterial surfaces.

Abstract:The influences of pH and NaCl concentration of dipping solutions and the pH and NaCl concentration of disintegration solutions on the disintegration behaviors of poly(4-vinylpyridiniomethanecarboxylate) (PVPMC)/poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) (PVPMC/PSS) multilayer films were investigated by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the disintegration rates and degrees of PVPMC/PSS multilayer films in neutral water could be well controlled by changing pH of dipping solutions and immersion time during the disintegration process. Furthermore, PVPMC/PSS multilayer films could be disintegrated completely and rapidly in pH 8 alkali solution or physiological condition (i.e., 0.15M NaCl solution). The controllable disintegration of PVPMC/PSS multilayer films was then utilized to fabricate PEC/PSS free-standing multilayer films, in which PEC was a positively charged polyelectrolyte complex made from excessive poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDDA) and PSS. The experimental results indicated that the disintegration rates of PVPMC/PSS sacrificial sublayer strongly affected the integrity of the resultant PEC/PSS free-standing multilayer films. Only free-floating PEC/PSS was released from neutral water by disintegrating PVPMC/PSS multilayer sublayers. However, large size flat and tube-like PEC/PSS free-standing multilayer films with good mechanical properties were obtained facilely from pH 8 alkali solution and 0.15M NaCl solution, respectively. The preparation of such free-standing films at physiological condition may be useful in the biological or medical application.
Construction of anti-adhesive and antibacterial multilayer films via layer-by-layer assembly of heparin and chitosan.

Abstract:Chitosan as an antibacterial agent and heparin as an anti-adhesive agent were alternatively deposited onto aminolyzed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films to construct anti-adhesive and antibacterial multilayer films. The contact-angle and UV data verified the progressive buildup of the multilayer film by alternate deposition of the polyelectrolytes. The properties of multilayer films were investigated by contact angle, atomic force microscopy (AFM), lateral force microscopy (LFM) and UV spectra. The results of initial adhesion of Escherichia coli (E. coli) on PET substrates showed that the number of E. coli adhered onto the control PET was in a much greater extent than onto the chitosan/heparin multilayer films, and the number of adhesive bacteria decreased with a decrease in assembly pH. The in vitro antibacterial test indicated that a multilayer of chitosan/heparin could kill the bacteria effectively. The number of viable bacteria decreased by 7% after 7h in contact with the control PET films, but by 46–68% for the multilayer-modified PET films. Only 3–8% of the cells were viable for the multilayer-modified PET films after 24h. It is interesting to find the assembly pH has a remarkable effect on the antibacterial property of the multilayer. The number of viable bacteria on the multilayer assembled at pH=3.8, 2.9 and 6.0 decreased by 68%, 58% and 46%, respectively. Such an easy processing and shape-independent method to prepare an anti-adhesive and antibacterial surface may have good potential for surface modification of cardiovascular devices.

Abstract:The self-assembly and disintegration behavior of polyzwitterion, poly(4-vinylpyridiniomethanecarboxylate) (PVPMC), and negatively charged polyelectrolyte, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), layer-by-layer (LbL) multilayer films were investigated in detail by using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that the PVPMC/PAA multilayer films grew linearly with increasing bilayer number. The disintegration rate of PVPMC/PAA multilayers could be well controlled by varying the concentration of salt in aqueous solution. It was found that PVPMC/PAA multilayer films could be completely disintegrated in 0.9% normal saline solution within 15 min. Such controllable disintegration behavior rendered the PVPMC/PAA multilayer as an excellent sacrificial sublayer for fabricating freestanding LbL multilayer films. Free-standing multilayer films were then successfully fabricated by LbL self-assembly of positively charged polyelectrolyte complex (PEC), made from poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDDA) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), and negatively charged PSS with PVPMC/PAA as a sacrificial sublayer, which was disintegrated in 0.9% normal saline solution. The obtained free-standing films had good mechanical properties with 24.1 MPa tensile strength at break and 0.56 GPa Young's modulus.
Dynamic Spongy Microporous Films to Load Lysozyme for Antibacterial Coating

Abstract:Polyelectrolyte multilayer films were fabricated by layer-by-layer deposition of polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI). The (PAA/PEI) films showed unique dynamic properties owning to the high mobility of the polymer molecules: the spongy microporous structure was formed through an acid treatment for 60 min; and the porous structure disappeared under a 100% relative humidity treatment, back to a solid film Based on this (PAA/PEI) platform, lysozyme was easily loaded into the film via a wicking action in 5 s, and then easily immobilized into the film after 8 h conservation in humid atmosphere, providing therefore a novel approach to prepare antibacterial coating without any specific requirement for the characteristic of the agents. Scanning electron microscope was employed to show the dynamic transformation of film structures, from the original film with 9.5 nm of thickness to spongy sporous film with 68 nm of thickness and back to the solid film of 12 nm after the conservation process. Confocal scanning laser microscope image showed an even distribution of lysozyme in the film with lysozyme labelled by FITC. Loading quantity and the release dynamics of lysozyme were tested utilizing ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. Further, gram positive bacteria S. aureus and gram negative bacteria E. coli were tested in the antibacterial assay. The result illustrated that the coating was able to kill S. aureus efficiently, and the antibacterial activity of lysozyme was not affected by such loading and releasing process. To further enhance the bactericidal effect of the coating against gram negative bacteria, lysozyme and lactoferrin, which have synergistic killing effect on gram negative bacteria, were immobilized into the film at the same time and performed a distinct higher antibacterial efficiency against E. coli in comparison with the (PEI/PAA)(15)-lysozyme coating, revealing the attractive potential of this film as antibacterial coatings for medical devices to prevent the hospital-associated infections.

Abstract:Layer-by-layer assembled multilayer films with antifouling and pH induced self-cleaning activities were constructed by polyurethane micelles with dense PEG brush coronas (PEG-g-PUM) and polyethylenimine (bPEI). The dense PEG brush coronas and acidic induced surface charge transform activities of PEG-g-PUM rendered the multilayer films (PEG-g-PUM/bPEI)(n) with antifouling and self-cleaning activities, respectively. Multilayer films constructed from polyurethane micelles without surface charge switchable properties (PEG-c-PUM, PEG-b-PUM), showed negligible pH induced surface release of PU micelles. Furthermore, Triclosan encapsulation in the multilayer films ((PEG-g-PUM-TLS/bPEI)(n)) further improved the antibacterial performance, as a result of pH and lipase triggered release of payloads from the surfaces. The antifouling properties of PEG-g-PUM and the on-demand release of payloads and PU micelles, may account for their excellent multiple antibacterial performance and pH-induced self-cleaning activities.

Abstract:The influence of different pH values between assembly and application environment on the surface properties of layer-by-layer assembled heparin and chitosan multilayer films was investigated. The high adsorption amount of cationic dye and high wettability on the chitosan terminated multilayer films at high environment pH may indicate the excess of free sulfate group existed on the chitosan surface. Since the ionization degree of chitosan decreased with increasing of pH, the multilayer films assembled at low pH will lead to some excess free unpaired sulfate group in higher pH application environment, which paired with ionized amino group under prepared conditions. The blood-compatibility tests performed with these films clearly demonstrated that the good anticoagulant activity of low pH assembled heparin/chitosan even on the chitosan-terminated surface. Such an easy and controlled processing by the difference of pH values between assembly and application environment may have a good potential for fabrication of biomedical device coating.

Abstract:Free‐standing, highly transparent, and flexible films are prepared from surface‐deacetylated chitin nanocrystals. The presence of natural polyphenols improves the tensile behavior, exerting a stiffening and toughening action, and hampers water absorption because of the crosslinking action of the phenolic and catecholic functionalities. These last further ensure radical scavenging and strong bactericidal activity in the films. Free‐standing, highly transparent and flexible films are obtained from solvent casting of aqueous colloidal dispersions of surface‐deacetylated chitin nanocrystals. The Young's modulus and the water absorption of the films is further modulated by the addition of three natural polyphenols, i.e., epigallocatechingallate, tannic acid and one lignosulfonate, which differ one another in terms of molecular weight, and overall amount of hydroxy, phenolic and catecholic functionalities. The polyphenolic molecules create an extensive network of hydrogen bonds with the nanocrystals, thus controlling interfacial interactions. Therefore, they act as crosslinkers exerting a reinforcing and structuring action and hampering water absorption. The films do not show dissolution in water upon 7 days of incubation at room temperature, and the release profiles of the polyphenols in aqueous media evidence hindered Fickian diffusion kinetics confirming the presence of interactions with the nanostructured matrix. Lastly, the developed films possess bioactive properties, as they show both radical scavenging and antimicrobial activity. These characteristics are enhanced by the phenolic and, most importantly, catecholic moieties present in tannins (and to a lesser extent in lignins), allowing to reach bactericidal effects as high as 99.99% against both Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative strains.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA)/starch acetate (SA) base film was prepared by scraping film method with PLA as the base film material, modified SA as the filling phase and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as plasticizer. Chitosan (CS)/tea polyphenol (TP) antibacterial agent was coated on the surface of PLA/SA base film by coating method. The morphology and structure of the composite film were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and thermogravimetric analysis, and the mechanical, optical and antibacterial properties were tested and analyzed. The results showed that CS/TP compound antibacterial agent was well combined with PLA/SA base film. Compared with the PLA/SA base film, when the content of TP (based on the mass of PLA/SA base film, the same below) was 0.4%, the tensile strength of the composite film increased by 29.33%, had good mechanical strength (24.96 ± 0.65 MPa), and the elongation at break increased by 29.34%; There was no obvious change in transparency, the light transmittance decreased by 0.86%; At the same time, the antibacterial composite film had good antibacterial effect on Escherichia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis . PLA/SA/CS/TP antibacterial composite film could be used in food packaging, especially those designed to protect food from light and microbial decay.

Abstract:Tannic acid (TA), as a natural molecule, possesses many excellent properties. It has attracted wide interest in various fields of functional coatings, food, and medicine. A simple method to prepare thick and stable TA-contained coating is required, which may promote practical applications of TA. Here, we proposed a simple and effective method of generating a stable TA-rich coating by spraying layer-by-layer technology. The coating was stabilized basing on the complexation of TA and ferric (Fe3+) ions and poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI). Because both TA and PEI have good antibacterial properties, the (TA-Fe3+/PEI) coating displayed the contact-killing against E. coli. Further, because of the reductive nature of the TA, the coating was able to incorporate nano‑silver particles by reducing silver ions. Consequently, the enhanced antibacterial property was achieved. The (TA-Fe3+/PEI) coating was then spraying coated on the nonwoven mask, showing the potential application in medical protection.
Polysaccharide-Based Bilayer Coatings for Biofilm-Inhibiting Surfaces of Medical Devices

Abstract:Chitosan (Chi) and 77KS, a lysine-derived surfactant, form polyelectrolyte complexes that reverse their charge from positive to negative at higher 77KS concentrations, forming aggregates that have been embedded with amoxicillin (AMOX). Dispersion of this complex was used to coat polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films, with an additional layer of anionic and hydrophilic hyaluronic acid (HA) as an outer adsorbate layer to enhance protein repulsion in addition to antimicrobial activity by forming a highly hydrated layer in combination with steric hindrance. The formed polysaccharide-based bilayer on PDMS was analyzed by water contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and surface zeta (ζ)-potential. All measurements show the existence and adhesion of the two layers on the PDMS surface. Part of this study was devoted to understanding the underlying protein adsorption phenomena and identifying the mechanisms associated with biofouling. Thus, the adsorption of a mixed-protein solution (bovine serum albumin, fibrinogen, γ-globulin) on PDMS surfaces was studied to test the antifouling properties. The adsorption experiments were performed using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) and showed improved antifouling properties by these polysaccharide-based bilayer coatings compared to a reference or for only one layer, i.e., the complex. This proves the benefit of a second hyaluronic acid layer. Microbiological and biocompatibility tests were also performed on real samples, i.e., silicone discs, showing the perspective of the prepared bilayer coating for medical devices such as prostheses, catheters (balloon angioplasty, intravascular), delivery systems (sheaths, implants), and stents.
Construction of Degradable Multilayer Films for Enhanced Antibacterial Properties

Abstract:Infections associated with medical devices have become a major concern. The adhesion of bacteria to the devices' surfaces during the initial 24 h is believed to be a "decisive period" for implant-associated infections, which pose key challenges to optimal antiadhesion of microbes in this period. Herein, we have designed and constructed a (heparin/chitosan)(10)-(polyvinylpyrrolidone/poly(acrylic acid))(10) [(HEP/CHI)(10)-(PVP/PAA)(10)] multilayer film by layer-by-layer self-assembly. Assembly of the underlying (HEP/CHI)(10) multilayer film is based on electrostatic interactions, showing the properties of contact killing of bacteria. Deposition of the top (PVP/PAA)(10) multilayer film is based on hydrogen bond interactions. The PAA molecules are then cross-linked to form anhydride groups by thermal treatment at 110 degrees C for 16 h. Therefore, it shows a top-down degradable capability in the determined period, leading to almost no adhesion of bacteria in 24 h. Our system combining the adhesion resistance and the contact killing properties shows an enhanced antibacterial capability through targeting the "decisive period" of implantation may have great potential for applications in medical implants, tissue engineering, etc.
Development of multilayer films based on PLA/PBAT and sodium alginate for active packaging

Abstract:Using polymer blends of polylactide (PLA) and polyadipic acid/butylene terephthalate (PBAT) as matrix, and chitosan (CS), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) or Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) loaded sodium alginate (SA) as coatings, a series of multilayer films were prepared via a starch‐based adhesive. In this study, polylactic acid (PLA) and polyadipic acid/butylene terephthalate (PBAT) blend polymer were used as matrix to prepare PLA/PBAT substrate film by twin‐screw extruder. A series of multilayer films were prepared by starch‐based adhesive by loading 1% chitosan (CS), 1% zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) or 1% silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with sodium alginate (SA) as three different coatings. Compared with PLA/PBAT, the combination of adhesive and SA‐based antibacterial coating significantly improved the water vapor barrier, oxygen barrier and mechanical properties of the film, regardless of the type of antibacterial agent. The water vapor transmission of SA‐based AgNPs coating film decreased from the original 5.77 × 10−14 to 3.41 × 10−14 g·cm·cm−2·Pa−1·s−1. The oxygen permeability of SA‐based chitosan coating decreased from the original 74.35 × 10−14 to 6.40 × 10−14 cm3·cm·cm−2·Pa−1·s−1. The tensile strength of the SA‐based AgNPs coating film increased from the original 264.79 to 286.22 MPa. The film is yellow and has good ultraviolet absorption capacity. Membranes doped with CS, ZnONPs or AgNPs inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Among them, chitosan doped membrane has weak antibacterial activity, AgNPs doped membrane has the best antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, and has potential application prospects in active packaging.

Abstract:Background: Biofilm formation is one of the main reasons for persistent bacterial infections. Recently, pH-sensitive copolymers have fascinated incredible attention to tackle biofilm-related infections. However, the proper incorporation of pH-sensitive segments in the polymer chains, which could significantly affect the biofilms targeting ability, has not been particularly investigated. Herein, we synthesized three types of pH-sensitive copolymers based on poly (β-amino ester) (PAE), poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), PAE-PLA-mPEG (A-L-E), PLA-PAE-mPEG (L-A-E) and PLA-PEG-PAE (L-E-A) to address this issue. Results: The three copolymers could self-assemble into micelles (MA-L-E, ML-A-E and ML-E-A) in aqueous medium. Compared with MA-L-E and ML-A-E, placing the PAE at the distal PEG end of PLA-PEG to yield PLA-PEG-PAE (ML-E-A) was characterized with proper triggering pH, fully biofilm penetration, and high cell membrane binding affinity. Further loaded with Triclosan (TCS), ML-E-A/TCS could efficiently kill the bacteria either in planktonic or biofilm mode. We reasoned that PAE segments would be preferentially placed near the surface and distant from the hydrophobic PLA segments. This would increase the magnitude of surface charge-switching capability, as the cationic PAE+ would easily disassociate from the inner core without conquering the additional hydrophobic force arising from covalent linkage with PLA segments, and rapidly rise to the outermost layer of the micellar surface due to the relative hydrophilicity. This was significant in that it could enable the micelles immediately change its surface charge where localized acidity occurred, and efficiently bind themselves to the bacterial surface where they became hydrolyzed by bacterial lipases to stimulate release of encapsulated TCS even a relatively short residence time to prevent rapid wash-out. In vivo therapeutic performance of ML-E-A/TCS was evaluated on a classical biofilm infection model, implant-related biofilm infection. The result suggested that ML-E-A/TCS was effective for the treatment of implant-related biofilm infection, which was proved by the efficient clearance of biofilm-contaminated catheters and the recovery of surrounding infected tissues. Conclusions: In summary, elaboration on the architecture of pH-sensitive copolymers was the first step to target biofilm. The ML-E-A structure may represent an interesting future direction in the treatment of biofilm-relevant infections associated with acidity.
Interfacial Assembly of Free-Standing Polymer-Phenolic Films for Antibacterial and Antiultraviolet Applications

Abstract:We report a facile interfacial assembly strategy for the preparation of flexible polyphenol-based films for antibacterial and antiultraviolet applications. The free-standing films can be instantaneously formed via spraying tannic acid (TA) at the surface of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) solutions. Compared with the traditional casting-evaporation procedure on solid substrates, the liquid interfacial assembly method for the construction of free-standing films is rapid and facile, which prevents the interface separation procedure from the substrates. The thickness and mechanical properties of the films are well controlled by changing the incubation time. The low-field nuclear magnetic resonance was used to analyze the water distributions inside the films and to distinguish the cross-linked structure of CMCS-TA films with different thicknesses, revealing the dynamics of the film formation process. Importantly, the films exhibit outstanding antibacterial and antiultraviolet properties, which are promising in the applications of wound dressings. This study provides a new avenue for the assembly of flexible free-standing films with multifunctionality via a facile and low-cost fabrication process.

Abstract:Due to environmental concerns related to non-biodegradable plastics, there is a high demand for biodegradable films, particularly those that incorporate natural antibacterial agents with long-lasting antimicrobial properties to maintain food quality and meet consumer health needs. This work encapsulated lysozyme in MIL-53 (Fe) microparticles (M@LYZ MPs) and incorporated them into polylactic acid (PLA) polymer (M@L-PLA film) using a solution casting technique. M@LYZ MPs release lysozyme in response to the acidic growth environment of microorganisms. The results showed that (i) incorporating M@LYZ MPs increased the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the film, (ii) the M@L-PLA film had remarkable antibacterial activity, with inhibition rates of 98.07% and 99.15% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. And the bacterial viability on M@L-PLA film decreased by more than 92%, indicating a strong anti-adhesion effect, and (iii) the soil degradability rate of M@L-PLA film reached almost 50% in 16 weeks. The incorporating M@LYZ MPs endowed the film with better lysozyme stability, antibacterial and anti-adhesion properties. These pH-responsive lysozyme-release films have great potential for intelligent packaging in food preservation applications.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Layer-by-layer assembly has shown a great deal of promise in biomedical coatings, as well as local drug delivery systems. The poor loading capacity of hydrophobic drugs within the multilayers is a drawback in their potential applications. Herein, sulfonated hyperbranched polyether (HBPO-SO(3)) with a hydrophobic core was incorporated into LBL films to provide nanoreservoirs for hydrophobic guest molecules. HBPO-SO(3) was proven to form stable micelles in the sodium acetate and acetic acid buffer solution (HAc buffer) for LbL assembly. The QCM and ellipsometry experiments demonstrated that the LBL films can be fabricated via alternating deposition of HBPO-SO(3) micelles and chitosan. The fluorescence emission spectra verified that the hydrophobic pyrene can be incorporated both by pre-encapsulation in HBPO-SO(3) micelles and post-diffusion in preassembled multilayer films. Compared with the pre-encapsulation approach, the post-diffusion process was more efficient in incorporating hydrophobic guest molecules into the LbL films and carried out a much more controllable release of the guest molecules. A multifunctional coating with potential anticoagulation, antibacterial, and local release of hydrophobic drug Probucal, which has powerful antioxidant properties and can prevent restenosis after coronary angioplasty, was then developed via post-diffusion of the anti-restenosis agents into the multilayer films of HBPO-SO(3) and chitosan.

Abstract:Abstract Poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a non-toxic, biocompatible degradable polymer material with excellent mechanical properties after moulding. However, it faces challenges in the use of biomedical materials because of its intolerance to bacteria. Here, we use an easy-to-operate method to prepare a composite multilayer membrane: PLLA membrane was used as substrates to assemble positively charged chitosan and negatively charged Ag@MXene on the surface using the layer-by-layer (LBL) method. The assembly process was detected by fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled chitosan and the thickness of the coating multilayer was also detected as 210.0 ± 12.1 nm for P-M membrane and 460.5 ± 26.5 nm for P-Ag@M membrane. The surface self-assembled multilayers exhibited 91.27% and 96.11% growth inhibition ratio against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains under 808 nm near-infrared laser radiation with a synergistic photothermal antibacterial effect. Furthermore, best biocompatibility of P-M and P-Ag@M membranes compare to PLLA membrane motivated us to further explore its application in biomedical materials.
