Abstract:Predator–prey interactions are critical in ecological communities, but it is increasingly clear that a predator's effect goes beyond eating prey. Fear of predators may also alter the behaviour, physiology, and morphology of prey as they try to reduce risk. Such 'non-consumptive effects' (NCEs) may have important demographic effects on prey populations. The study of NCEs has recently grown significantly across marine ecosystems, including coral reefs. Coral reefs support diverse predator assemblages, and consumptive effects substantially impact prey populations, suggesting NCEs are also likely to be important. Indeed, a growing number of aquarium and field studies have demonstrated that the behaviour of reef fishes is changed by predators, typically using predator models or a gradient of fishing pressure. Here, we review these studies to summarise what is currently known about NCEs in reef-fish assemblages, including effects on individuals and populations and variations in space and time caused by predator and prey traits and environmental factors, and the evidence for NCEs driving trophic cascades. Critically, throughout we also draw on a wider literature to highlight hypotheses and theories emerging in other ecosystems that can inform further work on reefs. While it is clear NCEs are significant among reef fishes and can alter reef functioning, evidence of demographic changes, mechanistic pathways (e.g. behavioural vs. stress induced), and work with multiple predators and prey is lacking. We suggest that establishing an initial framework of interactions among different predator and prey types is needed, allowing the integration of factors such as habitat complexity and internal prey state (e.g. hunger), and an increased understanding of how fishes move around seascapes of fear and how to integrate NCEs into ecosystem models. Such integration is critical for a fuller understanding of how fish assemblages function, interact with benthic organisms, and will be affected by environmental stressors.

Fear of predators in free-living wildlife reduces population growth over generations

Abstract:Significance Accurately evaluating the total impact of predators on prey population growth rates is fundamental to forecasting the consequences of predator conservation and management. That the fear (antipredator responses) predators inspire could contribute to this total impact has only relatively recently been recognized. We experimentally demonstrate that fear itself can impact prey population growth rates in free-living wildlife, extending to transgenerational impacts reducing population growth beyond the parental generation. We report how fear may contribute considerably to the total impact of predators and why this may be the norm in birds and mammals. The critical significance of our work lies in experimentally establishing that inferring the effects of predators using data on direct killing alone risks dramatically underestimating their total impact.

Abstract:The mere presence of predators (i.e., predation risk) can alter consumer physiology by restricting food intake and inducing stress, which can ultimately affect prey-mediated ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling. However, many environmental factors, including conspecific density, can mediate the perception of risk by prey. Prey conspecific density has been defined as a fundamental feature that modulates perceived risk. In this study, we tested the effects of predation risk on prey nutrient stoichiometry (body and excretion). Using a constant predation risk, we also tested the effects of varying conspecific densities on prey responses to predation risk. To answer these questions, we conducted a mesocosm experiment using caged predators (Belostoma sp.), and small bullfrog tadpoles (Lithobates catesbeianus) as prey. We found that L. catesbeianus tadpoles adjust their body nutrient stoichiometry in response to predation risk, which is affected by conspecific density. We also found that the prey exhibited strong morphological responses to predation risk (i.e., an increase in tail muscle mass), which were positively correlated to body nitrogen content. Thus, we pose the notion that in risky situations, adaptive phenotypic responses rather than behavioral ones might partially explain why prey might have a higher nitrogen content under predation risk. In addition, the interactive roles of conspecific density and predation risk, which might result in reduced perceived risk and physiological restrictions in prey, also affected how prey stoichiometry responded to the fear of predation.

Abstract:Demographic costs of behavioural and physiological responses to human activities are often inferred yet rarely tested. Existing literature on such effects is highly biased and limited. Future work in this area should draw from predator–prey theory and can inform conservation and management of wildlife. Human activities catalyse risk avoidance behaviours in wildlife across taxa and systems. However, the broader ecological significance of human‐induced risk perception remains unclear, with a limited understanding of how phenotypic responses scale up to affect population or community dynamics. We present a framework informed by predator–prey ecology to predict the occurrence of non‐consumptive effects (NCE) and trait‐mediated indirect effects (TMIE) of anthropogenic disturbances. We report evidence from a comprehensive review of the different types of human‐induced behavioural and physiological phenotypic changes and their influence on vital rates and population parameters in wildlife. Evidence for human‐induced NCEs and TMIEs is mixed, with half of published studies finding a relationship between human activities, phenotypic change and population outcomes. The net effects of anthropogenic NCEs and TMIEs depend on the mismatch between the phenotypic response and the lethality of human activity. However, strong research biases in taxa, systems, human disturbance types and demographic measures prevent unified inference about the prevalence of population responses to human activities. Coexistence with and conservation of wildlife requires additional research linking human‐induced phenotypic change to population and community outcomes.

Abstract:Two methods for detecting the phenolic glycolipid, PGL‐1, a Mycobacterium leprae‐specific molecule, in the urine of leprosy patients are described. Both methods rely on the 100‐fold preconcentration of the urine, which can be accomplished by a single‐step ultrafiltration procedure. The equivalent of approximately 2.5/μ of PGL‐1/ml was detected in the urine of LL patients with an inhibition ELISA. The second method, a direct dot‐blot assay on nitrocellulose paper, was much simpler and more sensitive. As little as 3 ng of antigen was detected by the dot‐bolt technique. PGL‐1 was detected in the urine of LL patients.
Costs of predator-induced phenotypic plasticity: a graphical model for predicting the contribution of nonconsumptive and consumptive effects of predators on prey

Abstract:Defensive modifications in prey traits that reduce predation risk can also have negative effects on prey fitness. Such nonconsumptive effects (NCEs) of predators are common, often quite strong, and can even dominate the net effect of predators. We develop an intuitive graphical model to identify and explore the conditions promoting strong NCEs. The model illustrates two conditions necessary and sufficient for large NCEs: (1) trait change has a large cost, and (2) the benefit of reduced predation outweighs the costs, such as reduced growth rate. A corollary condition is that potential predation in the absence of trait change must be large. In fact, the sum total of the consumptive effects (CEs) and NCEs may be any value bounded by the magnitude of the predation rate in the absence of the trait change. The model further illustrates how, depending on the effect of increased trait change on resulting costs and benefits, any combination of strong and weak NCEs and CEs is possible. The model can also be used to examine how changes in environmental factors (e.g., refuge safety) or variation among predator–prey systems (e.g., different benefits of a prey trait change) affect NCEs. Results indicate that simple rules of thumb may not apply; factors that increase the cost of trait change or that increase the degree to which an animal changes a trait, can actually cause smaller (rather than larger) NCEs. We provide examples of how this graphical model can provide important insights for empirical studies from two natural systems. Implementation of this approach will improve our understanding of how and when NCEs are expected to dominate the total effect of predators. Further, application of the models will likely promote a better linkage between experimental and theoretical studies of NCEs, and foster synthesis across systems.

Abstract:Predators exert a strong influence on ecological communities by reducing the abundance of prey (consumptive effects) and shaping their foraging behavior (non-consumptive effects). Although the prevalence of trophic cascades triggered by non-consumptive effects is increasingly recognized in a wide range of ecosystems, how its relative strength changes as prey individuals grow in size along various life stages remains poorly resolved. We investigated how the effects of predators vary with the ontogeny of a key herbivorous sea urchin, which is responsible for transforming diverse macroalgal forests to a barren state dominated by bare rock and encrusting coralline algae. We conducted a series of field and laboratory experiments to determine how susceptibility to predation, prey behavioral responses, and grazing impact on algal cover vary with sea urchin size. The consumptive effects of predators were greater on smaller sea urchin size classes, which were more susceptible to predation. Unexpectedly however, predator non-consumptive effects acted only on larger sea urchins, significantly reducing their grazing activity in the presence of predator cues. Crucially, only these larger sea urchins were capable of overgrazing macroalgae in the field, with non-consumptive effects reducing sea urchin foraging activity and macroalgal grazing impact by 60%. The decoupling between risk and fear as prey grow indicates that the strength of consumptive and non-consumptive trophic cascades may act differently at different ontogenetic stages of prey. While the consumptive effects of predators directly influence population numbers, the consequences of non-consumptive effects may far outlive consumptive effects as prey grow, finding refuge in size, but not from fear.

Abstract:Landscapes of fear can determine the dynamics of entire ecosystems. In response to perceived predation risk, prey can show physiological, behavioral, or morphological trait changes to avoid predation. This in turn can indirectly affect other species by modifying species interactions (e.g., altered feeding), with knock‐on effects, such as trophic cascades, on the wider ecosystem. While such indirect effects stemming from the fear of predation have received extensive attention for herbivore–plant and predator–prey interactions, much less is known about how they alter parasite–host interactions and wildlife diseases. In this synthesis, we present a conceptual framework for how predation risk—as perceived by organisms that serve as hosts—can affect parasite–host interactions, with implications for infectious disease dynamics. By basing our approach on recent conceptual advances with respect to predation risk effects, we aim to expand this general framework to include parasite–host interactions and diseases. We further identify pathways through which parasite–host interactions can be affected, for example, through altered parasite avoidance behavior or tolerance of hosts to infections, and discuss the wider relevance of predation risk for parasite and host populations, including heuristic projections to population‐level dynamics. Finally, we highlight the current unknowns, specifically the quantitative links from individual‐level processes to population dynamics and community structure, and emphasize approaches to address these knowledge gaps.

Abstract:Predator–prey interactions are a fundamental part of community ecology, yet the relative importance of consumptive and nonconsumptive effects (NCEs) (defined as a risk‐induced response that alters prey fitness) has not been resolved. Theory suggests that the emergence and subsequent predominance of consumptive or NCEs depend on the given habitat's complexity as well as predator hunting mode and spatial domain sizes of both predator and prey, but their relative influence on the outcome of predator–prey interactions is unknown. We built agent‐based models in NetLogo to simulate predator–prey interactions for three hunting modes—sit‐and‐wait, sit‐and‐pursue, and active—while concurrently simulating large versus small spatial domain sizes for both predators and prey. We studied (1) how hunting mode and spatial domain size interact to influence the emergence of consumptive or NCEs and (2) how, when NCEs do dominate, hunting mode and spatial domain separately or additively determine prey shifts in time, space, and habitat use. Our results indicate consumptive effects only dominate for active predators when prey habitat domains overlap completely with the predator's spatial domain and when sit‐and‐wait and sit‐and‐pursue predators and their prey both have large spatial domains. Prey are most likely to survive when they shift their time but most frequently shift their habitat. Our paper helps to better understand the underlying mechanisms that drive consumptive or NCEs to be most dominant.

Abstract:Predation can both reduce prey abundance directly (through density-dependent effects) and indirectly through prey trait-mediated effects. Over the years, many studies have focused on describing the density-area relationship (DAR). However, the mechanisms responsible for the DAR are not well understood. Loss and fragmentation of habitats, owing to human activities, creates landscape-level spatial heterogeneity wherein patches of varying size, isolation and quality are separated by a human-modified "matrix" of varying degrees of hostility and has been a primary driver of species extinctions and declining biodiversity. How matrix hostility in combination with trait-mediated effects influence DAR, minimum patch size, and species coexistence remains an open question. In this paper, we employ a theoretical spatially explicit predator–prey population model built upon the reaction-diffusion framework to explore effects of predator-induced emigration (trait-mediated emigration) and matrix hostility on DAR, minimum patch size, and species coexistence. Our results show that when trait-mediated response strength is sufficiently strong, ranges of patch size emerge where a nonlinear hump-shaped prey DAR is predicted and other ranges where coexistence is not possible. In a conservation perspective, DAR is crucial not only in deciding whether we should have one large habitat patch or several-small (SLOSS), but for understanding the minimum patch size that can support a viable population. Our study lends more credence to the possibility that predators can alter prey DAR through predator-induced prey dispersal.

Abstract:These findings demonstrate that among a diverse prey guild within a spatially heterogeneous environment, asymmetrical predation between a primary and secondary prey species can modulate both the magnitude of perceived risk and the strategies used to manage it, highlighting an important and understudied contingency in risk effects research. It is widely recognized that predators can influence prey through both direct consumption and by inducing costly antipredator behaviours, the latter of which can produce nonconsumptive effects that cascade through trophic systems. Yet, determining how particular prey manage risk in natural settings remains challenging as empirical studies disproportionately focus on single predator–prey dyads. Here, we contrast foraging strategies within the context of a primary and secondary prey to explore how antipredator behaviours emerge as a product of predation intensity as well as the setting in which an encounter takes place. We studied the effects of spotted owls (Strix occidentalis) on two species experiencing asymmetrical risk: dusky‐footed woodrats (Neotoma fuscipes; primary prey) and deer mice (Peromyscus spp.; alternative prey). Woodrats are most abundant within young forests, but predominantly captured by owls foraging within mature forests; in contrast, deer mice occur in high densities across forest types and seral stages and are consumed at lower per‐capita rates overall. We deployed experimental foraging patches within areas of high and low spotted owl activity, created artificial risky and safe refuge treatments, and monitored behaviour throughout the entirety of prey foraging bouts. Woodrats were more vigilant and foraged less within mature forests and at riskier patches, although the effect of refuge treatment was contingent upon forest type. In contrast, deer mice only demonstrated consistent behavioural responses to riskier refuge treatments; forest type had little effect on perceived risk or the relative importance of refuge treatment. Thus, habitat can interact with predator activity to structure antipredator responses differently for primary versus secondary prey. Our findings show that asymmetrical predation can modulate both the magnitude of perceived risk and the strategies used to manage it, thus highlighting an important and understudied contingency in risk effects research. Evaluating the direct and indirect effects of predation through the paradigm of primary and secondary prey may improve our understanding of how nonconsumptive effects can extend to population‐ and community‐level responses.

Abstract:It has long been recognized that pregnancy in women with diabetes mellitus is associated with a high fetal mortality and with a tendency to fetal gigantism." In the attempts to produce similar complications in experimental animals, some workers have not observed increased birth weight or an increased frequency of overweight newborns in diabetes.' Others have claimed that giant newborn rats were obtained from pancreatectomized rats and from rats with mild alloxan diabetes. The reported effects of experimental diabetes on fetal mortality have varied widely from author to author.'" In the work presented here, diabetes was induced both before and after conception (on day 12), by pancreatectomy or by alloxanization. We have found that diabetes retarded the growth of fetuses and prolonged the gestation period. Because of this prolongation of the gestation period, the birth weight at spontaneous delivery usually approximated that found in normal controls. In a group of two rats in which there was the greatest prolongation of gestation, diabetes resulted in an increased birth weight which was largely attributable to the prolonged gestation. Experimental diabetes was usually associated with a significant increase in fetal mortality. METHODS The animals used in this study were a subline of the Sprague-Dawley strain (Holtzman). Most of them were virgin females whose ages varied between 120 and 150 days and whose weight ranged between 230 and 280 gm. The rats were fed a diet of Purina fox chow. Abstract:The healthy herds hypothesis proposes that predators can reduce parasite prevalence and thereby increase the density of their prey. However, evidence for such predator-driven reductions in the prevalence of prey remains mixed. Furthermore, even less evidence supports increases in prey density during epidemics. Here, we used a planktonic predator-prey-parasite system to experimentally test the healthy herds hypothesis. We manipulated density of a predator (the phantom midge, Chaoborus punctipennis) and parasitism (the virulent fungus Metschnikowia bicuspidata) in experimental assemblages. Because we know natural populations of the prey (Daphnia dentifera) vary in susceptibility to both predator and parasite, we stocked experimental populations with nine genotypes spanning a broad range of susceptibility to both enemies. Predation significantly reduced infection prevalence, eliminating infection at the highest predation level. However, lower parasitism did not increase densities of prey; instead, prey density decreased substantially at the highest predation levels (a major density cost of healthy herds predation). This density result was predicted by a model parameterized for this system. The model specifies three conditions for predation to increase prey density during epidemics: (i) predators selectively feed on infected prey, (ii) consumed infected prey release fewer infectious propagules than unconsumed prey, and (iii) sufficiently low infection prevalence. While the system satisfied the first two conditions, prevalence remained too high to see an increase in prey density with predation. Low prey densities caused by high predation drove increases in algal resources of the prey, fueling greater reproduction, indicating that consumer-resource interactions can complicate predator-prey-parasite dynamics. Overall, in our experiment, predation reduced the prevalence of a virulent parasite but, at the highest levels, also reduced prey density. Hence, while healthy herds predation is possible under some conditions, our empirical results make it clear that the manipulation of predators to reduce parasite prevalence may harm prey density.
Perceived predation risk affects the development of among-individual behavioral variation in a naturally clonal freshwater fish

Abstract:Predation risk is a key driver of natural selection, influencing various aspects of prey behavior. While many studies focus on how predation risk affects average behavior at population level, less attention has been given to its potential impact on behavioral variation within prey populations. Here, we investigate the effect of perceived predation risk on among-individual behavioral variation in naturally clonal Amazon mollies. Juveniles were raised in two groups: one exposed to a predator during feeding (visual cues only) and the other one serving as a control group. We observed activity and feeding behavior (time spent feeding, visits to feeding spot) over a four-week period. (I) Individuals in the predator-exposed group were on average less active but there was no difference in average feeding behavior between the two groups, suggesting individuals strategically respond to threats based on behavior-specific cost-benefit trade-offs. (II) Among-individual behavioral variation was affected by perceived predation risk: in the absence of the predator, individuals developed pronounced differences in the time spent feeding while no such development was observed in the predator-exposed group. This result has the potential of affecting a wide range of fitness-relevant intraspecific interactions if lower among-individual feeding variation translate into reduced sizes differences. The presence of the predator initially reduced among-individual variation in activity and visits to the feeding spot, but these differences did not persist over time. Our findings highlight the importance of considering both population-level and individual-level responses to predation risk for a more comprehensive understanding of its ecological and evolutionary consequences.

Abstract:This study for the first time demonstrated that non‐consumptive effects could induce rapid evolution of Daphnia under semi‐natural mesocosm conditions. Predators can strongly influence prey populations not only through consumptive effects (CE) but also through non‐consumptive effects (NCE) imposed by predation risk. Yet, the impact of NCE on bioenergetic and stoichiometric body contents of prey, traits that are shaping life histories, population and food web dynamics, is largely unknown. Moreover, the degree to which NCE can evolve and can drive evolution in prey populations is rarely studied. A 6‐week outdoor mesocosm experiment with Caged‐Fish (NCE) and Free‐Ranging‐Fish (CE and NCE) treatments was conducted to quantify and compare the effects of CE and NCE on population densities, bioenergetic and stoichiometric body contents of Daphnia magna, a keystone species in freshwater ecosystems. We tested for evolution of CE and NCE by using experimental populations consisting of D. magna clones from two periods of a resurrected natural pond population: a pre‐fish period without fish and a high‐fish period with high predation pressure. Both Caged‐Fish and Free‐Ranging‐Fish treatments decreased the body size and population densities, especially in Daphnia from the high‐fish period. Only the Free‐Ranging‐Fish treatment affected bioenergetic variables, while both the Caged‐Fish and Free‐Ranging‐Fish treatments shaped body stoichiometry. The effects of CE and NCE were different between both periods indicating their rapid evolution in the natural resurrected population. Both the Caged‐Fish and Free‐Ranging‐Fish treatments changed the clonal frequencies of the experimental Daphnia populations of the pre‐fish as well as the high‐fish period, indicating that not only CE but also NCE induced clonal sorting, hence rapid evolution during the mesocosm experiment in both periods. Our results demonstrate that CE as well as NCE have the potential to change not only the body size and population density but also the bioenergetic and stoichiometric characteristics of prey populations. Moreover, we show that these responses not only evolved in the studied resurrected population, but that CE and NCE also caused differential rapid evolution in a time frame of 6 weeks (ca. four to six generations). As NCE can evolve as well as can drive evolution, they may play an important role in shaping eco‐evolutionary dynamics in predator–prey interactions.

Improving the biological realism of predator-prey size relationships in food web models alters ecosystem dynamics

Abstract:Body-size relationships between predators and prey exhibit remarkable diversity. However, the assumption that predators typically consume proportionally smaller prey often underlies size-dependent predation in ecosystem models. In reality, some animals can consume larger prey or exhibit limited changes in prey size as they grow larger themselves. These distinct predator-prey size relationships challenge the conventional assumptions of traditional size-based models. Cephalopods, with their diverse feeding behaviours and life histories, offer an excellent case study to investigate the impact of greater biological realism in predator-prey size relationships on energy flow within a size-structured ecosystem model. By categorizing cephalopods into high and low-activity groups, in line with empirically derived, distinct predator-prey size relationships, we found that incorporating greater biological realism in size-based feeding reduced ecosystem biomass and production, while simultaneously increasing biomass stability and turnover. Our results have broad implications for ecosystem modelling, since distinct predator-prey size relationships extend beyond cephalopods, encompassing a wide array of major taxonomic groups from filter-feeding fishes to baleen whales. Incorporating a diversity of size-based feeding in food web models can enhance their ecological and predictive accuracy when studying ecosystem dynamics.
[Evaluation of complications of different operation modes in endometrial cancer].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To analyze the postoperative complications in patients with endometrial carcinoma undergoing surgical operation in different modes and to explore the surgical safety of retroperitoneal lymph node dissection. METHODS Two hundred and nineteen patients with endometrial cancer treated in our hospital between May 2006 and April 2012 were included in this study. Their clinicopathological data were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 65 patients received total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (TAH+BSO group), 54 patients received TAH and BSO and pelvic lymph node dissection (PLX group), and 100 patients received TAH and BSO and PLX and para-aortic lymph node dissection (PALX group). The surgical procedures and postoperative complications in different operation modes were analyzed. RESULTS The operation time was (114.84 ± 6.45) min in the TAH+BSO group, (182.94 ± 6.62) min in the PLX group, and (188.27 ± 5.77) min in the PALX group. The operation time in the TAH+BSO group was significantly shorter than that in the PLX and PALX group (P < 0.001). The amount of blood loss was (222.97 ± 38.42) ml in the TAH+BSO group, (311.80 ± 21.62) ml in the PLX group, and (391.51 ± 53.20) ml in the PALX group. respectively. The amount of blood loss in the TAH+BSO was significantly less than that in the PLX and PALX group (P = 0.009). Lymphedema of the lower extremities was the most frequent complication of retroperitoneal lymph node dissection and the incidence rate was 31.8%. Lymphocyst was the second frequent complication, with an incidence rate of 27.3%. The incidence rate of ileus in the PALX group was significantly higher than that in the PLX group (P = 0.001). There were no significant differences in the incidence rate of lymphedema, lymphocyst and deep vein thrombosis between the PALX and PLX groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection is an acceptable operation mode, although slightly increasing the incidence of ileus, compared with the TAH+BSO group. It is needed to choose appropriate indication in order to decrease the post-operative complications.
Context-dependent consumptive and non-consumptive predator effects of omnivorous tadpoles based on body size and habitat shading

Abstract:Despite previous treatment as herbivores, largely omnivorous tadpoles may exhibit both consumptive (CEs) and non-consumptive effects (NCEs), but the roles of additional biotic and abiotic factors in mediating these effects, such as body size and habitat shading, are poorly understood. We compared freshwater invertebrate abundance and community composition across tadpole body size and habitat shading treatments to assess whether these factors influence the strength of tadpole CEs and NCEs. Macroinvertebrate and zooplankton abundances and community composition were characterized in mesocosms with either large or small wood frog ( Lithobates sylvaticus ) tadpoles either shaded or not in separate CE (uncaged tadpole) and NCE (caged tadpole) treatments. Invertebrates were least abundant in mesocosms with larger tadpoles under shade. Macroinvertebrates suffered declines associated with CEs and NCEs, whereas zooplankton experienced positive NCEs but negative CEs. Our results suggest larger predators can predate more diverse prey (CEs) due to their wider gapes, but also that increased production of cues associated with predation risk can elicit stronger prey behavioral responses, such as changes in foraging time (NCEs). Predator body sizes and habitat shading are shifting with climate change, and such shifts may alter strength and direction of CEs and NCEs exerted by amphibians on freshwater invertebrates.

Abstract:Predation has direct effects on prey population dynamics through mortality, and it can induce indirect effects through fear. The indirect effects of predation have been documented experimentally, but few studies have quantified them in nature so that their role in prey population dynamics remains controversial. Given the expanding or reintroduced populations of large predators in many areas, the quantification of indirect effects of predation is crucial. We sought to evaluate the direct and indirect fitness effects of intense cougar (Puma concolor) predation using 48 years of data on marked bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) on Ram Mountain, Alberta, Canada. We compared years of intense cougar predation with years with no or occasional cougar predation. We first quantified the effects of predation on neonatal, weaning, and overwinter lamb survival, three metrics potentially affected by direct and indirect effects. We then investigated the possible indirect effects of intense cougar predation on lamb production, female summer mass gain, and lamb mass at weaning. We found strong effects of cougar predation on lamb survival, lamb production, and seasonal mass gain of lambs and adult females. In years with high predation, neonatal, weaning, and overwinter lamb survival declined by 18.4%, 19.7% and 20.8%, respectively. Indirect effects included a 14.2% decline in lamb production. Female summer mass gain decreased by 15.6% and lamb mass at weaning declined by 8.0% in years of intense cougar predation. Our findings bring key insights on the impacts of predation on prey fitness by reporting moderate to large effects on recruitment and illustrate the importance of indirect effects of predation on population dynamics.

Abstract:We have combined cooperative hunting, inspired by recent experimental studies on birds and vertebrates, to develop a predator-prey model in which the fear effect simultaneously influences the birth and mortality rates of the prey. This differs significantly from the fear effect described by most scholars. We have made a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of the model and obtained some new conclusions. The results indicate that both fear and cooperative hunting can be a stable or unstable force in the system. The fear can increase the density of the prey, which is different from the results of all previous scholars, and is a new discovery in our study of the fear effect. Another new finding is that fear has an opposite effect on the densities of two species, which is different from the results of most other scholars in that fear synchronously reduces the densities of both species. Numerical simulations have also revealed that the fear effect extends the time required for the population to reach its survival state and accelerates the process of population extinction.
