Abstract:With the development of science and technology and the increasing importance attached by to these domains by the state and government departments in recent years, China’s coal production and safety supervision level continue to increase. However, the prevalence of frequent coal mine safety accidents has not been effectively curbed. The main purpose of this study was to explore the mediating role of work engagement in the relationship between psychological capital and safety citizenship behavior among Chinese coal miners. Data for 317 coal miners were collected from five coal and energy enterprises. The Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PCQ), the Job Engagement Scale (JES), and the Safety Citizenship Behavior Scale (SCBS) were used to evaluate the coal miners’ psychological capital, work engagement, and safety citizenship behavior. The causal steps approach and bootstrap Method were used in this study to assess the proposed mediation models. A correlation analysis indicated that psychological capital, work engagement, and safety citizenship behavior were significantly correlated with each other. Furthermore, the mediation analysis showed that work engagement mediated the relationship between psychological capital and safety citizenship behavior. Psychological capital does not only have a direct impact on coal miners’ safety citizenship behavior, but it also has an indirect impact on coal miners’ safety citizenship behavior via work engagement. Therefore, effectively enhancing an individual’s psychological capital and work engagement may be a basic factor determining coal miners’ safety citizenship behavior, which further promotes safety production within the enterprise.

Measuring the Effects of External Factor on Leadership Safety Behavior: Case Study of Mine Enterprises in China

Abstract:Mining industry is one of the most risky industry in China. There are numbers of accidents attributing to leadership behavior. Leadership safety behavior is viewed as an important factor influencing safety performance of enterprise, and thus it is crucial to identify the factors which could affect leadership safety behavior. The purpose of thesis is to empirically evaluate external factor dimensions and examine the effect of external factor on leadership safety behavior in mining industry context. After interviews and case studies, four survey data collected from nearly 800 respondents working for mines in China were analyzed by two approaches for variable dimension, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Three dimensions of the external factor were identified, namely: safety management mechanism, safety regulatory practice and safety idea. Then simple linear regression analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and stepwise multiple regression were used to examine the effects of external factor on leadership safety behavior. The results indicate that the effect of external factor on leadership safety behavior is significant and positive; safety idea significantly and positively affects leadership safety behavior, whereas safety regulatory practice and safety management Mechanism have a positive but not significant influence on leadership safety behavior; safety regulatory practice significantly and positively affects safety training and safety policy of leadership safety behavior; safety idea significantly and positively affects safety training, safety management commitment and safety incentive of leadership safety behavior. Social Exchanges in Organizations and Work Engagement: The Mediating Role of Psychological Capital

Abstract:Using a sample of over 300 employees from mainland China,the present study investigated the relationship among 2 social exchanges in organizations-perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange,psychological capital and work engagement,especially the mediating role of psychological capital.The results indicated that both perceived organizational support and leader-member exchange had positive effects of prediction on psychological capital and wok engagement;and psychological capital had a positive effect of prediction on work engagement.Further study showed that psychological capital mediated the relationship between social exchanges in organizations and work engagement.
Leader-member Exchange and Employees’ Safety Behavior: the Moderating Effect of Safety Climate

Abstract:Building on recent work in occupational safety, the present research investigated the relationship between leader-member exchange (LMX) and in-role safety behavior. We predicted that higher quality LMX may produce employees’ stronger motivation for reciprocity, which may lead to not only more extra-role safety behavior [1], but also more in-role safety behavior. Data were collected among work units in a power supplying company in China. Our findings indicated a moderating effect of safety climate on the hypothesized relationship between LMX and safety behavior, so that LMX was positively associated with safety behavior when safety climate was high, while it was negatively associated with safety behavior when safety climate was low. Implications of our findings for social exchange theory and safety management were discussed.
Violation with Concerns of Safety: A Study on Non-Compliant Behavior and the Antecedent and Consequent Effects in Power Grid Construction

Abstract:Non-compliant behaviors have been indicated to be leading indicators of accidents in workplaces. Though most studies treat intentional non-compliant behavior or violations as monolithic indicators for adverse safety performance, non-compliant behaviors might take different forms with distinct motives and outcomes. To examine and compare the effects of different forms of non-compliant safety behavior, we proposed a construct of risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior, which refers to employees' deliberate deviation from safety rules while considering safety concerns and adjusting their behavior accordingly, and investigated the differential antecedent effects by contextual factors and consequential effects on safety outcomes. By a sample of 390 workers and their supervisors in a power grid construction firm, the results of our study indicated that safety climate and transformational leadership were positively associated with safety compliance and negatively associated with violation by multi-level analyses. However, active transactional leadership also had a positive association with risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior, and this association was moderated by safety climate such that the relationship was stronger in higher level of safety climate. Furthermore, although risk-adjusted non-compliant behavior did not significantly affect penalties for deviance compared to violation behavior, it increased the workers' risk perception of hazard. The implications of these findings for theory were discussed.

Abstract:In addition to risk-taking behavior, we propose that psychological safety also promotes prosocial behavior through cooperative goal interdependence. To differentiate these two types of effects, we contrasted the moderating effects of two interpersonal harmony motives. A survey in China supported the indirect effect of psychological safety on helping behavior through cooperative goal interdependence. This mediated relationship was moderated by harmony enhancement such that the mediated effect of psychological safety was weaker when harmony enhancement was high. Psychological safety was positively related to innovative behavior, and this relationship was moderated by disintegration avoidance such that it was weaker when disintegration avoidance was high. These results shed light on the different effects of psychological safety and their underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:Theoretical researchers of manager psychology have excellent potential to extend its research framework to more enterprise application areas, such as innovation, performance, and safety in production. Research in these areas has also been increasing in the past 10 years. Psychological capital is composed of four aspects: self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and tenacity. It plays an essential role in stimulating organizational growth and improving organizational performance. In safety management work, managers, as the core members of the organization, have a relationship between their psychological capital and employees’ safety performance. Nevertheless, the closeness of the relationship between psychological capital and employee safety performance has not been fully demonstrated by academic circles. Based on positive psychology theory, this paper conducts a questionnaire survey of 157 managers and 314 employees related to safety work in manufacturing enterprises. From the new perspective of organizational emotional capability, this paper investigates the complex and extensive social-psychological role in organizations and combs, analyzes, and integrates relevant psychological research to construct the influence mechanism of managers’ psychological capital and employee safety performance. Finally, the three important issues found based on data analysis were: (1) Managers’ psychological capital has a significant positive impact both on employee safety performance and organizational emotional capability; (2) Organizational emotional capability has a significant positive impact on employee safety performance; (3) organizational emotional capability plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between managers’ psychological capital and employee safety performance.

Development of a Universal Safety Behavior Management System for Coal Mine Workers

Abstract:Background: In China, over 80% of all work-related deaths in the mining industry occur in coal mines and human factors constitute 85% of the direct causes of coal mine accidents, which indicates that significant shortcomings currently exist in the safety behavior management of Chinese coal mine workers. We aimed to verify the impact of human psychological behavior in coal mine accidents systematically through experimental study, theoretical analysis and management application. Methods: Four test instruments (Sensory and cognitive capacity test, Sixteen-Personal Factor Questionnaire, Symptom Checklist 90 Questionnaire and the supervisors' evaluation) were employed from November 2013 to June 2014 to identify unsafe behavior factors, the self-established Questionnaire of Safety Behavior Norms (QSBN) was also used to propose the safety behavior countermeasures of coal mine employees. Results: The mental health of most coal mine workers' is relatively poor. The sensory and cognitive capacity of those in different work posts varies greatly, as does the sense of responsibility. Workers are susceptible to external influences, and score low in site management. When the 16-PF and SCL-90 sensory and cognitive assessments were combined, the psychological index predictive power was greatest for estimating sense of efficiency and degree of satisfaction in internal evaluations, while at the same time lowest for estimating control of introversion-extroversion and stress character. Conclusion: The psychological indicators can predict part of employee safety behavior, and assist a coal mine enterprise to recruit staff, develop occupational safety norms and improve the working environment.

Abstract:Psychosocial safety behavior has been indicated to be an important factor in ensuring workplace safety, but the forming mechanism of the psychosocial safety behavior of coal miners remains unclear. Considering the important impact of job role demands on psychosocial safety behavior and the dual attributes of job role demands in different contexts, this study constructs a dual hierarchical model of job role demands on psychosocial safety behavior in the coal-mining context, and explains the roles of personal resources (safety-related psychological capital) and job resources (psychosocial safety climate) in this model based on job demands-resources (JD-R) theory. Hierarchical nested data were gathered from 753 coal miners on 50 working teams. The Mplus modelling results demonstrate that job role demands manifesting as job hindrances negatively affect psychosocial safety behavior, and safety-related psychological capital mediates this impact. Moreover, as expected, the negative influence of job role demands on safety-related psychological capital and the indirect negative influence of job role demands on psychosocial safety behavior are both inverted to positive in a high-level psychosocial safety climate. The findings support the hindrance influencing mechanism of job role demands on psychosocial safety behavior considering the comprehensive influence of personal resources and job resources in the coal-mining context from the psychological perspective. A new management perspective and some intervention recommendations for coal mine work safety at the psychological level are proposed to promote the safety behavior of coal miners, which could then be used as a reference for other high-risk industries.

Abstract:With China's economic and social development entering a new era, the improvement of miners' living standards and safety production conditions in coal mine are bound to have a new impact on the safety needs of miners. In order to explore the structural changes of miners' safety demands in the new era, this research adopts the second-order confirmatory factor analysis method to investigate miners from six coal mining enterprises based on Koffka's cognitive psychology theory. Firstly, according to the interaction between the behavioral environment and the self-regulation of coal miners, six potential variables affecting miners' safety psychology, such as material satisfaction, non-skill internal causes, professionalism, emotional attribution, safety atmosphere, and organizational management, are selected. Then, each potential variable is subdivided into 3 observation variables, for a total of 18 observation variables, and a 3-tier comprehensive structural model of miners' safety psychology is constructed that takes into account both evaluation and path integration. The results showed that, affected by the interaction of various potential variables, the degree and intensity of the influence of each factor on miners' safety psychology were different. Among them, emotional attribution was the most significant factor affecting miners' safety psychology, while the influence of organizational management was slightly less important than emotional attribution. Organizational management had a positive impact on material satisfaction and non-skill internal factors. Occupational literacy, material satisfaction, and safety atmosphere had strong impacts on miners' safety psychology. But the impact of non-skill factors on miners' safety psychology was lower than other factors, which is different to previous studies on this aspect.

Abstract:Safety commitment is a key factor determining the stability of miners' safe behavior. This study explored safety commitments from the perspective of personnel traits and social networks, extending previous studies on single individual safety commitments. A case survey of social networks, personality traits, and the safety commitment level of six workgroups from coal mining enterprises in China was conducted. The findings demonstrate that: (1) Workgroups exhibited “external occlusion”, and key connecting nodes and the core nodes of each group showed an aggregation of nodes with more openness and conscientiousness. (2) With regard to the network density, a positive relationship exists between network density and safety commitment for groups in the same sub-units; likewise, there are obvious correlations among parts of network parameters and safety commitments, as well as personality traits. (3) The opinion leaders’ commitment to safety reflects that of their workgroup. Meanwhile, when opinion leaders and group chiefs are not the same people, the safety commitment of opinion leaders is higher than that of group chiefs. (4) Homogeneous clusters and heterogeneous clusters of subgroups exist in workgroups and there is a consistent relationship between the safety characteristics of cluster subgroups and the safety commitment level of the whole workgroup. This study extends the theoretical foundation of safety commitments from the perspective of micro-networks and provides a practical inspiration for overcoming inefficient safety management and effectively promoting safety performance in coal companies.

Abstract:As a high-risk industry that is always struggling with unsafe factors, coal mine enterprises must prioritize safety in their operation and management, but there are still some short-sighted coal mine managers who choose to leave safety behind in the desperate pursuit of financial benefits, resulting in coal mine accidents from time to time. Unfortunately, this leadership style, known as leader bottom-line mentality, has not yet received sufficient attention in the safety field. Based on dual-system theory, this study aimed to explore the mediating role of emotional exhaustion and safety consciousness between leader bottom-line mentality and miners’ safety behavior, as well as the moderating role of Chinese traditionality. Using a sample of 422 frontline miners in China, the results of the data analysis showed that emotional exhaustion and safety consciousness played parallel mediating roles between leader bottom-line mentality and miners’ safety behavior, and Chinese traditionality moderated the effect of leader bottom-line mentality: the higher the Chinese traditionality, the weaker the mediating effect of emotional exhaustion and the stronger the mediating effect of safety consciousness. Present research explains the mechanisms and boundaries of the influence of leader bottom-line mentality on miners’ safety behavior, contributing to the emerging literature on safety management and bottom-line mentality.

Abstract:Work-family conflict among underground coal miners not only leads their mental disorders but also may cause coal accidents. The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between Work-family conflict (WFC) and mental health, testing the Psychological capital (PsyCap) plays a moderating role in this relationship. The cross-sectional survey was performed in Shanxi Province, China during the August to October 2017. 986 miners from five coal mines were recruited in this study. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed to explore the moderating role of psychological capital. The result showed that Work-family conflict was positively related to Anxiety Symptoms and Depressive Symptoms. Psychological capital (PsyCap) moderated the relationship between WFC and Anxiety, Depressive Symptoms. The findings illustrate that psychological capital was an important way to improve miners' mental health. Managers should promote organization support and investment in PsyCap to improve miners' mental health.
The Safety Attitudes of Senior Managers in the Chinese Coal Industry

Abstract:Introduction: Senior managers' attitudes towards safety are very important regarding the safety practices in an organization. The study is to describe the current situation of senior managers' attitudes towards safety in the Chinese coal industry. Method: We evaluated the changing trends as well as the reasons for these changes in the Chinese coal industry in 2009 and in 2014 with 168 senior manager samples from large Chinese state-owned coal enterprises. Evaluations of 15 safety concepts were performed by means of a questionnaire. Results and Conclusions: Results indicate that, in 2014, three concepts were at a very high level (mean > 4.5), and six were at a relatively high level (4.5 > mean > 4.0). Analyses of changing trends revealed that nine concepts improved significantly, while four greatly declined in 2014 compared to those in 2009. The data reported here suggest that the reasons for the significant improvement with respect to the nine concepts include the improvement in social and legal environments, the improvement of the culture of social safety, workers' safety demands being met, and scientific and technical advances in the coal industry. The decline of the four concepts seemed to be caused by a poor awareness of managers in the coal industry that safety creates economic benefits, insufficient information on safety, inadequate attention to the development of a safety culture and safety management methods, and safety organizations and workers' unions not playing their role effectively. Practical Applications: We therefore recommend strengthening the evidence that safety creates economic benefits, providing incentives for employees to encourage their participation in safety management, and paying more attention to the prevention of accidents in coal mines via safety organizations and unions. These results can provide guidelines for workers, industrialists, and government regarding occupational safety in the whole coal industry.

Abstract:Safety voice has become a popular research topic in the organizational safety field because it helps to prevent accidents. A good safety climate and psychological safety can motivate employees to actively express their ideas about safety, but the specific mechanisms of safety climate and psychological safety, on safety voice, are not yet clear. Based on the "environment-subject cognition-behavior" triadic interaction model of social cognitive theory, this paper explores the relationship between safety climate and safety voice, and the mediating role of psychological safety. We collected questionnaires and conducted data analysis of the valid questionnaires using analytical methods such as hierarchical regression, stepwise regression, and the bootstrap sampling method. We found that safety climate significantly and positively influenced safety voice, and psychological safety played a mediating role between safety climate and safety voice, which strengthened the positive relationship between them. From the research results, it was clear that to stimulate employees to express safety voice behavior, organizations should strive to create a good safety climate and pay attention to building employees' psychological safety. The findings of this paper provide useful insights for the management of employee safety voice behavior in enterprises.

Safety Comes First: A Multilevel Examination of Employee Unsafe Behaviors and Safety Outcomes

Abstract:The current study simultaneously examined individual-level and group-level antecedents of employee safety-related outcomes, and the corresponding mediating and moderating effects. Data collected involving 567 employees, 33 work groups in China provided supporting evidences for most of our hypotheses, and qualitative data from interviews added depth to our explanations. At the individual level, general and specific job resources were negatively associated with employee unsafe behaviors and job demands were positively associated with employee unsafe behaviors, through different mediating processes--safety knowledge, safety motivation, and emotional exhaustion. Employee unsafe behaviors further positively predicted employees’ near misses and injuries. At the group level, safety climate negatively predicted employee unsafe behaviors through influencing group-shared unsafe-behavior pattern. In addition, group-shared unsafe-behavior pattern strengthened the relationships between employees’ safety motivation, emotional exhaustion and employee unsafe behaviors.
Influence of management practices on safety performance: The case of mining sector in China

Abstract:<p>Although reports of horrific injuries resulting from safety problems in China's mining sector emerge regularly, studies investigating occupational health and safety (OHS) management in Chinese organisations are scarce. OHS constitutes a human resource management (HRM) issue, and although it is also considered a general management issue, it continues to be overlooked by scholars in the management field. To address this gap in the literature, the aim of this paper is to identify the underlying mechanisms linking management and safety outcomes by examining the influence of some critical management and HRM practices on employee safety behaviours. Results of a survey of 493 employees revealed management commitment to safety, safety training, and promotion of employee involvement, affect employee safety performance directly and through safety knowledge and motivation. It was also demonstrated these practices could mean much more to employees paid on a piece-rate versus time-rate basis. This study provides valuable guidance for practitioners towards identifying the mechanisms through which workplace safety can be improved.</p>

Abstract:Objectives Construction is one of the unsafe industrial sectors, causing a considerable amount of harm to its workforce and organizations globally. Only a handful of research evidence has been found evaluating individuals' cognitive and engagement-related constructs to improve occupational safety. Psychological Capital (PsyCap) can have a promising impact on construction workers' psychological health, possibly leading to positive performance. Limited studies have tested PsyCap and work engagement regarding safety specifically in the context of the construction industry, with non-harmonious findings. Methods The proposed framework was assessed through the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique along with bootstrapping for mediation analysis. Responses were collected from different states of Malaysia from 345 construction workers. PsyCap dimensions (hope, efficacy, resilience, and optimism) were measured in connection with safety compliance and safety participation, with the mediating role of work engagement. Results According to findings, hope, optimism, and work engagement have a positive and significant impact on safety compliance. Also, hope, self-efficacy, resilience, optimism, and work engagement have a positive and significant impact on safety participation. Further, self-efficacy and optimism both have a positive impact on work engagement. Conclusions PsyCap can be a possible predictor for work engagement, which may enhance safety-related behavior. PsyCap should be treated as a multidimensional instrument to enhance occupational safety. In-depth deliberation is needed by the organization while applying PsyCap to enhance employees' work engagement as well as safety behavior. Practical interventions based on interactive training are proposed to enhance construction industry safety. Other industries can also adapt suitable dimension(s) of PsyCap to safety behavior improvements.

Abstract:The effective improvement of employee behavioral compliance and safety performance is an important subject related to the sustainable development of the construction industry. Based on data from a Chinese company (n = 290), this study used a partial least squares-structural equation model to clarify the relationship among safety participation, job competence, and behavioral compliance. Empirical analysis found that: (1) safety participation had a significant positive impact on employees' behavioral compliance; and (2) job competence played a partial mediating role between safety participation and behavioral compliance. By selecting two new perspectives of safety participation and job competence, this study derived new factors affecting behavioral compliance, constructed a new theory about safety management, and conducted an in-depth discussion on improving behavioral compliance theoretically. Practically, the research put forward a new decision-making model, deconstructed the mechanism between safety participation and behavioral compliance, and provided new guiding strategies for improving employee behavioral compliance.
The impact of identity conflicts among Chinese knowledge-based miners on unsafe behavior: A moderated chain mediation model

Abstract:Background: In the context of smart mine construction, coal mine safety management is imposing stringent requirements on the safety competence of miners. To meet these demands, coal mine enterprises have initiated proactive measures to recruit a new generation of knowledge-based miners who possess high qualifications and specialized backgrounds. Objective: This study aims to explore the underlying mechanisms of identity conflict (IC) and its influence on unsafe behavior (USB) among KBMs within the context of China's smart mining initiatives, as well as to identify the role of potential mediating and moderating variables in this relationship. Methods: An empirical study was conducted on a sample of 304 KBMs with a college degree or above, selected from multiple coal mines in Shanxi Province, China. Hierarchical regression analysis and the Bootstrap method were employed for data analysis. This model incorporated IC as the antecedent variable and meticulously investigated the mediating effects of role breadth self-efficacy (RBSE) and psychosocial resources (PSR), along with the moderating effect of positive explanatory bias (PEB). Results: The findings indicate a significant positive correlation between IC and USB among KBMs. RBSE and PSR were found to mediate the relationship between IC and USB. Moreover, this mediating effect further influenced the relationship between IC and USB through a chain mediating effect. Additionally, PEB strengthened the positive impact of KBMs' RBSE on PSR. Conclusion: These results provide a broader perspective on the antecedent variables associated with KBMs' USB and provide valuable insights and practical management strategies enhancing the safety management practices within coal mining enterprise.
