Abstract:Passive millimeter wave has been employed in security inspection owing to a good penetrability to clothing and harmlessness. However, the passive millimeter wave images (PMMWIs) suffer from low resolution and inherent noise. The published methods have rarely improved the quality of images for PMMWI and performed the detection only based on PMMWI with bounding box, which cause a high rate of false alarm. Moreover, it is difficult to identify the low-reflective non-metallic threats by the differences in grayscale. In this paper, a method of detecting concealed threats in human body is proposed. We introduce the GAN architecture to reconstruct high-quality images from multi-source PMMWIs. Meanwhile, we develop a novel detection pipeline involving semantic segmentation, image registration, and comprehensive analyzer. The segmentation network exploits multi-scale features to merge local and global information together in both PMMWIs and visible images to obtain precise shape and location information in the images, and the registration network is proposed for privacy concerns and the elimination of false alarms. With the grayscale and contour features, the detection for metallic and non-metallic threats can be conducted, respectively. After that, a synthetic strategy is applied to integrate the detection results of each single frame. In the numerical experiments, we evaluate the effectiveness of each module and the performance of the proposed method. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods with 92.35% precision and 90.3% recall in our dataset, and also has a fast detection rate.

Abstract:In contemporary security detection systems, the utilization of millimeter-wave radar has assumed a central role owing to its non-contact and innocuous nature. This study addresses the challenging issues of detecting low-resolution and small targets in active millimeter wave (AMMW) images concealed detection. We identify a prevalent drawback in existing detectors, specifically the adoption of strided convolution or pooling layers, leading to a loss of crucial details that adversely impacts the detection rate. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a novel convolutional structure, termed Wavelet-Conv, which maintains information integrity while segregating features from high and low frequency bands, effectively replacing the unfavorable design. Furthermore, we harness the wavelet transform to enhance channel and spatial attention mechanisms, enabling more effective utilization of frequency band features and ensuring interpretability in the computational process. In this pursuit, we integrate the proposed Wavelet-Conv and Wavelet-Attention modules into the YOLOv8 framework, culminating in a unified model, termed Wavelet-YOLO. Through rigorous experimental validation on two AMMW datasets, our approach exhibits superior performance by significantly enhancing the recall and mean average precision (mAP) of small targets in AMMW images, while maintaining competitive inference speed. Extensive experiments demonstrate the outperformance of our proposed method over existing state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:The detection of concealed suspicious objects in public places is a critical issue and a popular research topic. Terahertz (THz) imaging technology, as an emerging detection method, can penetrate materials without emitting ionizing radiation, providing a new approach to detecting concealed suspicious objects. This study focuses on the detection of concealed suspicious objects wrapped in different materials such as polyethylene and kraft paper, including items like scissors, pistols, and blades, using THz imaging technology. To address issues such as the lack of texture details in THz images and the contour similarity of different objects, which can lead to missed detections and false alarms, we propose a THz concealed suspicious object detection model based on SMR–YOLO (SPD_Mobile + RFB + YOLO). This model, based on the MobileNext network, introduces the spatial-to-depth convolution (SPD-Conv) module to replace the backbone network, reducing computational and parameter load. The inclusion of the receptive field block (RFB) module, which uses a multi-branch structure of dilated convolutions, enhances the network's depth features. Using the EIOU loss function to assess the accuracy of predicted box localization further optimizes convergence speed and localization accuracy. Experimental results show that the improved model achieved mAP@0.5 and mAP@0.5:0.95 scores of 98.9% and 89.4%, respectively, representing improvements of 0.2% and 1.8% over the baseline model. Additionally, the detection speed reached 108.7 FPS, an improvement of 23.2 FPS over the baseline model. The model effectively identifies concealed suspicious objects within packages, offering a novel approach for detection in public places.

Abstract:Every year, a large amount of population reconciles gun-related violence all over the world. In this work, we develop a computer-based fully automated system to identify basic armaments, particularly handguns and rifles. Recent work in the field of deep learning and transfer learning has demonstrated significant progress in the areas of object detection and recognition. We have implemented YOLO V3 “You Only Look Once” object detection model by training it on our customized dataset. The training results confirm that YOLO V3 outperforms YOLO V2 and traditional convolutional neural network (CNN). Additionally, intensive GPUs or high computation resources were not required in our approach as we used transfer learning for training our model. Applying this model in our surveillance system, we can attempt to save human life and accomplish reduction in the rate of manslaughter or mass killing. Additionally, our proposed system can also be implemented in high-end surveillance and security robots to detect a weapon or unsafe assets to avoid any kind of assault or risk to human life.

Lightweight Detection Method for X-ray Security Inspection with Occlusion

Abstract:Identifying the classes and locations of prohibited items is the target of security inspection. However, X-ray security inspection images with insufficient feature extraction, imbalance between easy and hard samples, and occlusion lead to poor detection accuracy. To address the above problems, an object-detection method based on YOLOv8 is proposed. Firstly, an ASFF (adaptive spatial feature fusion) and a weighted feature concatenation algorithm are introduced to fully extract the scale features from input images. In this way, the model can learn further details in training. Secondly, CoordAtt (coordinate attention module), which belongs to the hybrid attention mechanism, is embedded to enhance the learning of features of interest. Then, the slide loss function is introduced to balance the simple samples and the difficult samples. Finally, Soft-NMS (non-maximum suppression) is introduced to resist the conditions containing occlusion. The experimental result shows that mAP (mean average precision) achieves 90.2%, 90.5%, 79.1%, and 91.4% on the Easy, Hard, and Hidden sets of the PIDray and SIXray public test set, respectively. Contrasted with original model, the mAP of our proposed YOLOv8n model increased by 2.7%, 3.1%, 9.3%, and 2.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the parameter count of the modified YOLOv8n model is roughly only 3 million.

Abstract:The Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks (RCNN) based deep learning models has been classifiedimage patterns and deep features through layer architecture. This study proposes a novel YoLo Faster R-CNN based weapon detection algorithm for unusual weapon object detection. The proposed YoLoV3 R-CNN computer vision application can rapidly find weapons carried by people and highlighted throughbounding-box-intimation. The work plan of this research is divided into two stages, at 1st stage pre-processing has been called to Faster R-CNN segmentation. The 2nd stage has been training the dataset as well as extracting 8-features (image_id, detection score, pixels-intensity, resolution, Aspect-ratio, PSNR, CC, SSIM) into .csv file. The labeling can be performed to RCNN-YoLo method such that getting real-time objects detection (Unusual things).The Confusion matrix has been generating performance measures in terms of accuracy 97.12%, SSIM 0.99, sensitivity 97.23%, and throughput 94.23% had been attained which are outperformance methodology.
Real-Time Weapon Detection Using YOLOv8 for Enhanced Safety

Abstract:This research paper presents the development of an AI model utilizing YOLOv8 for real-time weapon detection, aimed at enhancing safety in public spaces such as schools, airports, and public transportation systems. As incidents of violence continue to rise globally, there is an urgent need for effective surveillance technologies that can quickly identify potential threats. Our approach focuses on leveraging advanced deep learning techniques to create a highly accurate and efficient system capable of detecting weapons in real-time video streams. The model was trained on a comprehensive dataset containing thousands of images depicting various types of firearms and edged weapons, ensuring a robust learning process. We evaluated the model's performance using key metrics such as precision, recall, F1-score, and mean Average Precision (mAP) across multiple Intersection over Union (IoU) thresholds, revealing a significant capability to differentiate between weapon and non-weapon classes with minimal error. Furthermore, we assessed the system's operational efficiency, demonstrating that it can process frames at high speeds suitable for real-time applications. The findings indicate that our YOLOv8-based weapon detection model not only contributes to the existing body of knowledge in computer vision but also addresses critical societal needs for improved safety measures in vulnerable environments. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, this research lays the groundwork for developing practical solutions that can be deployed in security settings, ultimately enhancing the protective capabilities of law enforcement and public safety agencies.

High-Performance Detection of Concealed Forbidden Objects on Human Body with Deep Neural Networks Based on Passive Millimeter Wave and Visible Imagery

Abstract:In this paper, a high-performance detection algorithm of concealed forbidden objects on human body is presented based on deep neural networks (DNN) and complementary advantages of passive millimeter wave imagery (PMMWI) and visible imagery (VI). With well capacity of penetrability, PMMWI can effectively reveal suspected forbidden objects concealed on human body without harm of ionizing radiation compared with conventional X-ray methods. However, due to its current limited imaging capability, the resolution of PMMWI is still unsatisfactory and easy to result in false alarms. Therefore, by complementarity of superiorities, VI is employed to overcome the deficiency of confusions. In this way, massive image samples of PMMWI and VI are simultaneously acquired and manually annotated as necessary training datasets to carry out deep learning on DNN models so as to achieve high-performance human body profile segmentation on both PMMWI and VI. Then, high-precision region registration of human body profiles is implemented between PMMWI and VI to localize and confirm high confident suspected targets and remove false alarm regions as well. According to the principle of synthetic integration and global optimization, a high performance detection algorithm system is constructed, analyzed, and assessed. A series of comprehensive experiment results demonstrate the outstanding performance of our proposed detection algorithm.

Abstract:Passive millimeter wave (MMW) and terahertz (THz) waves have shown the potential for detecting hidden objects concealed beneath clothing materials. This has led to extensive research in this field, with a focus on developing imaging systems that can detect concealed weapons on humans. The article introduces a novel approach to real-time passive MMW/THz imaging systems specifically designed for detecting hidden objects on moving people. Unlike existing imaging systems, which often require multiple receivers or complex setups, the proposed system achieves real-time imaging using a single pixel in a low-cost manner. The article also explores multiple-pixel configurations to enhance the system's performance. The scanning mechanisms of the systems were simulated in the W band of the electromagnetic spectrum, and scanning pattern parameters were determined in the concept of real-time imaging. Single and multiple-pixel passive MMW/THz imaging systems' behaviours were tested for stationary targets with a pan-tilt unit to verify the measurement intervals in order to validate the Roetta scanning patterns, and the findings were shared in the article. Furthermore, while the scanning methods presented were primarily developed for passive MMW/THz imaging, this study also highlights the potential for semi-active usage with the new scanning method in these bands. The research presented in this article contributes to the advancement of real-time imaging systems for concealed weapon detection using passive or semi-active MMW/THz technology. It offers valuable insights and methodologies that can aid in the development of future imaging systems for enhanced security applications.

Abstract:Weapon detection (WD) provides early detection of potentially violent situations. Despite deep learning (DL) algorithms and sophisticated closed-circuit television (CCTVs), detecting weapons is still a difficult task. So, this paper proposes a WD model using PELSF-DCNN. Initially, the input video is converted into frames and pre-processed. The objects in the pre-processed frames are detected using the YOLOv8. In meantime, motion estimation is done using the DS algorithm in the pre-processed images to cover all the information. Then, the detected weapons undergo a sliding window process by considering the motion estimated frames. The silhouette score is calculated for detected humans and other objects. Now, the features are extracted and the important features are selected using the CSBO algorithm. The selected features and the output of YOLOv8 are given to the PELSF-DCNN classifier. Finally, the confidence score is calculated for the frame to define the number of weapons. In an experimental evaluation, the proposed method is found to be more efficient than the existing methods.

Abstract:Gun and weapon détection plays a crucial role in security, surveillance, and law enforcement. This study conducts a comprehensive comparison of all available YOLO (You Only Look Once) models for their effectiveness in weapon detection. We train YOLOv1, YOLOv2, YOLOv3, YOLOv4, YOLOv5, YOLOv6, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8 on a custom dataset of 16,000 images containing guns, knives, and heavy weapons. Each model is evaluated on a validation set of 1,400 images, with mAP (mean average precision) as the primary performance metric. This extensive comparative analysis identifies the best performing YOLO variant for gun and weapon detection, providing valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each model for this specific task.

Abstract:Millimeter wave (MMW) images can be used to identify metallic or non-metallic embargoed items hidden under clothing in both active and passive modes. Detection of concealed objects aims to locate these forbidden items from given MMW images. However, how to effectively realize the detection of concealed objects from MMW images is still a very challenging task, since the prohibited items are relatively smaller in size than human bodies, and the quality of MMW images is also relatively lower than natural images such as in signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution, and further, domain shifts of MMW images are common in the real applications. In this paper, a domain adaptive detection system, mainly composed of two parts: a detection module and a domain adaptation module, is proposed. Our system takes reconstructed single-channel MMW images as the input. For the detection module, a top-down region-free network with attention units is proposed to effectively fuse low-level and high-level features. For the domain adaptation module, an unsupervised hierarchical alignment is proposed and incorporated into the training process to constrain the inter-domain difference of the extracted features by embedding the extracted features into kernel Hilbert spaces and optimally matching different domain distributions. Ablative experiments are conducted to evaluate the function of each module and the performance of the proposed system. Experimental results on both active and passive MMW datasets demonstrate that the proposed method is evidently superior over existing methods in accuracy and speed of detection and should be very useful in practice for concealed object detection.
Real Time Deep Learning Weapon Detection Techniques for Mitigating Lone Wolf Attacks

Abstract:Firearm Shootings and stabbings attacks are intense and result in severe trauma and threat to public safety. Technology is needed to prevent lone-wolf attacks without human supervision. Hence designing an automatic weapon detection using deep learning, is an optimized solution to localize and detect the presence of weapon objects using Neural Networks. This research focuses on both unified and II-stage object detectors whose resultant model not only detects the presence of weapons but also classifies with respective to its weapon classes, including handgun, knife, revolver, and rifle, along with person detection. This research focuses on (You Look Only Once) family and Faster RCNN family for model validation and training. Pruning and Ensembling techniques were applied to YOLOv5 to enhance their speed and performance. models achieve the highest score of 78% with an inference speed of 8.1ms. However, Faster R-CNN models achieve the highest AP 89%.

Concealed Object Detection for Passive Millimeter-Wave Security Imaging Based on Task-Aligned Detection Transformer

Abstract:Passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) is a significant potential technique for human security screening. Several popular object detection networks have been used for PMMW images. However, restricted by the low resolution and high noise of PMMW images, PMMW hidden object detection based on deep learning usually suffers from low accuracy and low classification confidence. To tackle the above problems, this paper proposes a Task-Aligned Detection Transformer network, named PMMW-DETR. In the first stage, a Denoising Coarse-to-Fine Transformer (DCFT) backbone is designed to extract long- and short-range features in the different scales. In the second stage, we propose the Query Selection module to introduce learned spatial features into the network as prior knowledge, which enhances the semantic perception capability of the network. In the third stage, aiming to improve the classification performance, we perform a Task-Aligned Dual-Head block to decouple the classification and regression tasks. Based on our self-developed PMMW security screening dataset, experimental results including comparison with State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) methods and ablation study demonstrate that the PMMW-DETR obtains higher accuracy and classification confidence than previous works, and exhibits robustness to the PMMW images of low quality.

Abstract:Accurately identifying all objects of interest inside the specified frame of reference is crucial for object identification techniques to allow machine vision to interpret images successfully. Theoretical frameworks from computer vision and deep learning have informed many potential solutions to this problem. However, current approaches frequently fail when faced with objects going through random geometric changes and continually show shortcomings when identifying small, dense objects. This research looks at state-of-the-art object detection methods, compares them, and then suggests a convolutional object detection network that has been tweaked to fix the problems with the existing methods. Comparing our research to existing approaches, we find that they perform better. We accomplish this by training deep convolutional networks to detect geometric transformations and adjusting the networks to handle multi-scaled features. The results achieved after the optimization of the You only look once (YOLO) V5 & V7 are stated in this paper. The experiments demonstrated that YOLO v8 achieved higher accuracy than the hyper-tuned YOLO V5 and V7, with an average Precision (mAP) score of 52.8% on the customized military dataset running at 60 Frames Per Second (FPS). Object detection using deep neural networks (DNNs) poses a significant challenge due to the high computational and power requirements, mainly when deployed on general-purpose platforms such as CPUs and GPUs. However, addressing these limitations becomes crucial for efficient edge computing tasks like object detection, where faster, smaller, and energy-efficient solutions are essential. To overcome these challenges, system-on-chip (SoC) designs emerge as a promising solution.

A Lightweight Military Target Detection Algorithm Based on Improved YOLOv5

Abstract:Military target detection technology is the basis and key for reconnaissance and command decision-making, as well as the premise of target tracking. Current military target detection algorithms involve many parameters and calculations, prohibiting deployment on the weapon equipment platform with limited hardware resources. Given the above problems, this paper proposes a lightweight military target detection method entitled SMCA-α-YOLOv5. Specifically, first, the Focus module is replaced with the Stem block to improve the feature expression ability of the shallow network. Next, we redesign the backbone network of YOLOv5 by embedding the coordinate attention module based on the MobileNetV3 block, reducing the network parameter cardinality and computations, thus improving the model's average detection accuracy. Finally, we propose a power parameter loss that combines the optimizations of the EIOU loss and Focal loss, improving further the detection accuracy and convergence speed. According to the experimental findings, when applied to the self-created military target data set, the developed method achieves an average precision of 98.4% and a detection speed of 47.6 Frames Per Second (FPS). Compared with the SSD, Faster-RCNN, YOLOv3, YOLOv4, and YOLOv5 algorithms, the mAP values of the improved algorithm surpass the competitor methods by 8.3%, 9.9%, 2.1%, 1.6%, and 1.9%, respectively. Compared with the YOLOv5 algorithm, the parameter cardinality and computational burden are decreased by 85.7% and 95.6%, respectively, meeting mobile devices' military target detection requirements.

Improved YOLOv3 Model for miniature camera detection

Abstract:The abuse of miniature cameras has severely violated information security and privacy. Several unsolved challenges such as small or multiple targets detection as well as complex background environments in terms of active laser detection still exist, resulting in difficulties in its practical application. In this paper, an active laser detection system is proposed to obtain high-intensity cat-eye reflection images. An improved YOLOv3 model, YOLOv3-4L, was introduced to detect the actual position of the target. In the YOLOv3-4L model, each image was resized to 608 × 608 to preserve image details. The scales of prediction were increased from three to four, and an additional feature map was used to extract more details. YOLOv3-4L exhibited excellent performance in detecting small targets. The experimental results show that the mean average precision achieved by YOLOv3-4L was 90.37 % , compared to the 85.41 % , 87.81 % , and 88.97 % achieved by traditional YOLOv3, Faster R-CNN, and Single Shot Multi-box Detector respectively. The speed of the YOLOv3-4L model meets the requirements of real-time target detection.

Abstract:In the field of security, baggage-screening with X-rays is used as nondestructive testing for threat object detection. This is a common protocol when inspecting passenger baggage particularly at airports. Unfortunately, the accuracy of such human inspection is around 80–90%, under optimal operator conditions. For this reason, it is quite necessary to assist human inspectors with the aid of computer vision algorithms. This work proposes a deep learning-based methodology designed to detect threat objects in (single spectrum) X-ray baggage scan images. For this purpose, our proposed framework simulates a large number of X-ray images, using a combination of PGGAN (Karras et al. in International conference on learning representations, 2018. https://openreview.net/forum?id=Hk99zCeAb) and superimposition (Mery and Katsaggelos in 2017 IEEE conference on computer vision and pattern recognition workshops (CVPRW), 2017.https://doi.org/10.1109/CVPRW.2017.37) strategies, that are used to train state-of-the-art detection models such as YOLO (Redmon et al. in You only look once: unified, real-time object detection. CoRR abs/1506.02640, 2015. http://arxiv.org/ abs/1506.02640), SSD (Liu et al. in SSD: single shot multibox detector. CoRR abs/1512.02325, 2015. http://arxiv. org/abs/1512.02325) and RetinaNet (Lin et al. in Focal loss for dense object detection. CoRR abs/1708.02002, 2017. http://arxiv.org/abs/1708.02002). Our method has been tested on real X-ray images in the detection of four categories of threat objects: guns, knives, razor blades and shuriken (ninja stars). In our experiments, YOLOv3 (Redmon and Farhadi in Yolov3: An incremental improvement. CoRR abs/1804.02767, 2018. http://arxiv.org/abs/1804.02767) obtained the best mean average precision (mAP) with 96.3% for guns, 76.2% for knives, 86.9% for razor blades and 93.7% for shuriken, while the average mAP for all threat objects was 80.0%. We believe the effectiveness of our method in the detection of threat objects makes its use in checkpoints possible. Moreover, our methodology is scalable and can be easily extended to detect other categories automatically.

Abstract:The proliferation of edge devices driven by advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technology has intensified the challenge of achieving high-precision small target detection, as it demands extensive computational resources. This amplifies the conflict between the need for precise detection and the requirement for cost-efficiency across numerous edge devices. To solve this problem, this paper introduces an enhanced target detection algorithm, MSGD-YOLO, built upon YOLOv8. The Faster Implementation of CSP Bottleneck with 2 convolutions (C2f) module is enhanced through the integration of the Ghost module and dynamic convolution, resulting in a more lightweight architecture while enhancing feature generation. Additionally, Spatial Pyramid Pooling with Enhanced Local Attention Network (SPPELAN) replaces Spatial Pyramid Pooling Fast (SPPF) to expand the receptive field, optimizing multi-level feature aggregation for improved performance. Furthermore, a novel Multi-Scale Ghost Convolution (MSGConv) and Multi-Scale Generalized Feature Pyramid Network (MSGPFN) are introduced to enhance feature fusion and integrate multi-scale information. Finally, four optimized dynamic convolutional detection heads are employed to capture target features more accurately and improve small target detection precision. Evaluation on the VisDrone2019 dataset shows that compared with YOLOv8-n, MSGD-YOLO improves mAP@50 and mAP@50–95 by 14.1% and 11.2%, respectively. In addition, the model not only achieves a 16.1% reduction in parameters but also attains a processing speed of 24.6 Frames Per Second (FPS) on embedded devices, thereby fulfilling real-time detection requirements.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, an algorithm to the detection and imaging of hidden arms for passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) imaging systems is proposed. This technique is; in fact, an improved version of our previously developed auto-classification algorithm by extending it by exploiting the Otsu ’ s multi-level thresholding method. The detailed derivation and the brief steps of the proposed algorithm are given. The proposed algorithm is tested and validated by real PMMW images obtained by a real radiometric imaging system. Resultant measured images are obtained with the employment of signal and image processing procedures of the suggested technique. It is demonstrated by the constructed PMMW images that proposed technique successfully detects a concealed metal threat and also predicts its size by drawing the shape outline based on Otsu ’ s multi-level thresholding routine that was specially tailored to our auto-classification technique.
