Abstract:While moving, animals must frequently make decisions about their future travel direction, whether they are alone or in a group. Here we investigate this process for zebrafish (Danio rerio), which naturally move in cohesive groups. Employing state-of-the-art virtual reality, we study how real fish follow one or several moving, virtual conspecifics. These data are used to inform, and test, a model of social response that includes a process of explicit decision-making, whereby the fish can decide which of the virtual conspecifics to follow, or to follow some average direction. This approach is in contrast with previous models where the direction of motion was based on a continuous computation, such as directional averaging. Building upon a simplified version of this model [Sridhar et al. 2021], which was limited to a one-dimensional projection of the fish motion, we present here a model that describes the motion of the real fish as it swims freely in two-dimensions. Motivated by experimental observations, the swim speed of the fish in this model uses a burst-and-coast swimming pattern, with the burst frequency being dependent on the distance of the fish from the followed conspecific(s). We demonstrate that this model is able to explain the observed spatial distribution of the real fish behind the virtual conspecifics in the experiments. In particular, the model naturally explains the observed critical bifurcations for a freely swimming fish, whenever the fish makes a decision to follow only one of the virtual conspecifics, instead of following them as an averaged group. This model can provide the foundation for modeling a cohesive shoal of swimming fish, while explicitly describing their directional decision-making process at the individual level

Abstract:The movement of a group of biological individuals, such as fish schools, can evolve from disordered motions to synergistic movements or even ordered patterns. However, the physical origins behind such emergent phenomena of complex systems remain elusive. Here, we established a high-precision protocol for studying the collective behavior of biological groups in quasi-two-dimensional systems. Based on our video recording of symbolscript 600 h of fish movements, we extracted a force map of the interactions between fish from their trajectories using the convolution neural network. Presumably, this force implies the fish's perception of the surrounding individuals, the environment, and their response to social information. Interestingly, the fish in our experiments were predominantly in a seemingly disordered swarm state, but their local interactions were clearly specific. Combining such local interactions with the inherent stochasticity of the fish movements, we reproduced the collective motions of the fish through simulations. We demonstrated that a delicate balance between the specific local force and the intrinsic stochasticity is essential for ordered movements. This study presents implications for self-organized systems that use basic physical characterization to produce higher-level sophistication.
Real-Time Feedback-Controlled Robotic Fish for Behavioral Experiments With Fish Schools

Abstract:Integrating robotic agents into animal groups creates significant opportunities for advancing experimental investigations of collective animal behavior. In the case of fish schooling, new insights into processes such as collective decision making and leadership have been made in recent experiments in which live fish were interacting with robotic fish driven along preplanned paths. We introduce a new cyber-physical implementation that enables robotic fish to use real-time feedback to control their motion in response to live fish and other environmental features. Each robotic fish is magnetically connected to, and thus moved by, a wheeled robot underneath the tank. Real-time image processing of a video stream from an overhead camera provides measurements of both the robotic fish and the live fish moving together in the tank. Feedback responses computed from these measurements are communicated to the robotic fish using Bluetooth. We show results of demonstrations and discuss possibilities that our implementation affords for new kinds of behavioral experiments with fish schools.

Spontaneous Response of a Self-Organized Fish School to a Predator

Abstract:While the collective movements of fish schools evading predators in nature are complex, they can be fundamentally represented by simplified mathematical models. Here we develop a numerical model, which considers self-propelled particles subject to phenomenological behavioural rules and the hydrodynamic interactions between individuals. We introduce a predator in this model, to study the spontaneous response of a group of simulated fish to the threat. A self-organized fish school with a milling pattern is considered, which was expected to be efficient to evade the threat of predators. Four different attack tactics are adopted by the predator. We find that the simulated fish form transiently smaller structures as some prey individuals split from the main group, but eventually they will re-organize, sometimes into sub groups when the simulated predator approaches the fish school unidirectionally or take a reciprocating action. As the predator is programmed to target the centroid, the school ends in a gradually enlarging circle. For the fourth tactic, as the predator chases its nearest prey, the fish school's response varies with the predator's delay factor. Moreover, the average speed of the group and the distance between individuals have also been studied, both demonstrating that the fish school is able to respond spontaneously to the predator's invasion. We demonstrate that the currently adopted model can predict prey-predator interactions.
Using a robotic platform to study the influence of relative tailbeat phase on the energetic costs of side-by-side swimming in fish

Abstract:A potential benefit of swimming together in coordinated schools is to allow fish to extract energy from vortices shed by their neighbours, thus reducing the costs of locomotion. This hypothesis has been very hard to test in real fish schools, and it has proven very difficult to replicate the complex hydrodynamics at relevant Reynolds numbers using computational simulations. A complementary approach, and the one we adopt here, is to develop and analyse the performance of biomimetic autonomous robotic models that capture the salient kinematics of fish-like swimming, and also interact via hydrodynamic forces. We developed bio-inspired robotic fish which perform sub-carangiform locomotion, and measured the speed and power consumption of robots when swimming in isolation and when swimming side-by-side in pairs. We found that swimming side-by-side confers a substantial increase in both the speed and efficiency of locomotion of both fish regardless of the relative phase relationship of their body undulations. However, we also find that each individual can slightly increase their own power efficiency if they change relative tailbeat phase by approximately 0.25 π with respect to, and at the energetic expense of, their neighbour. This suggests the possibility of a competitive game-theoretic dynamic between individuals in swimming groups. Our results also demonstrate the potential applicability of our platform, and provide a natural connection between the biology and robotics of collective motion.

Abstract:Fish often travel in highly organized schools. One of the most quoted functions of these configurations is energy savings. Here, we verified the hypothesis and explored the mechanism through series of experiments on "schooling" robotic fish, which can undulate actively with flexible body, resembling real fish. We find that, when the school swims in the same spatial arrays as the real one, the energy consumption of the follower mainly depends on the phase difference, a phase angle by which the body wave of the follower leads or lags that of the leader, instead of spatial arrays. Further analysis through flow visualization indicates that the follower saves energy when the phase difference corresponds to the situation that the follower flaps in the same direction of the flow field induced by the vortex dipole shedding by the leader. Using biomimetic robots to verify the biological hypothesis in this paper also sheds new light on the connections among the fields of engineering, physics and biology.

Abstract:For a long time, fish school swimming has attracted a great deal of attention in biological systems, as fish schools can have complex hydrodynamic effects on individuals. This work adopted a non-iterative, immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM). A numerical simulation of two-dimensional three-degree-of-freedom self-propelled fish, in side-by-side, staggered, and triangle formations, was conducted by adjusting spacing and motion parameters. A comprehensive analysis of individual speed gains and energy efficiencies in these formations was carried out. Furthermore, an analysis of the hydrodynamic characteristics of fish schools was performed, using instantaneous vorticity profiles and pressure fields. Certain studies have shown that passive interactions between individuals cannot always bring hydrodynamic benefits. The swimming efficiency of side-by-side formations in the same phase gradually increases as the distance decreases, but it also brings certain burdens to individuals when the phases are different. This paper also shows that the roles of passive interactions, spacing, and deflections affect fish school subsystems differently. When the low-pressure areas created by a wake vortex act on one side of an individual's body, the tail-end fish are good at gaining hydrodynamic benefits from it. This effect is not universal, and the degree to which individuals benefit from changes in exercise parameters varies. This study provides a theoretical basis for bioinspired robots, as well as providing certain insights into the mechanism of collective biological movement.

Abstract:Moving in groups is an amazing spectacle of collective behaviour in fish and has attracted considerable interest from many fields, including biology, physics and engineering. Although robotic fish have been well studied, including algorithms to simulate group swimming, experiments that demonstrate multiple robotic fish as a stable group are yet to be achieved. One of the challenges is the lack of a robust bottom-level motion control system for robotic fish platforms. Here we seek to overcome this challenge by focusing on the design and implementation of a motion controller for robotic fish that allows multiple individuals to swim in groups. As direction control is essential in motion control, we first propose a high-accuracy controller which can control a sub-carangiform robotic fish from one arbitrary position/pose (position and direction) to another. We then develop a hydrodynamic-model-based simulation platform to expedite the process of the parameter tuning of the controller. The accuracy of the simulation platform was assessed by comparing the results from experiments on a robotic fish using speeding and turning tests. Subsequently, extensive simulations and experiments with robotic fish were used to verify the accuracy and robustness of the bottom-level motion control. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of our controller by implementing group swimming using three robotic fish swimming freely in prescribed trajectories. Although the fluid environment can be complex during group swimming, our bottom-level motion control remained nominally accurate and robust. This motion control strategy lays a solid foundation for further studies of group swimming with multiple robotic fish.

Abstract:Collective motion of animal groups such as fish schools and bird flocks in three-dimensional (3D) space are modeled by considering a topological (Voronoi) neighborhood. The tridimensionality of the group is quantified. Apart from the patterns of swarming, schooling, and milling, we identify a 3D bait ball around the phase transition boundary. More significantly, we find that by considering a blind angle in this topology based model, an individual interacts statistically with six to seven neighbors, consistent precisely with the previous field observations of the starling flocks. This model could be expected to enable more insightful investigation on realistic collective motion of shoals or flocks.

Abstract:We determine the basic phase diagram of the fish school model derived from data by Gautrais et al (2012 PLoS Comput. Biol. 8 e1002678), exploring its parameter space beyond the parameter values determined experimentally on groups of barred flagtails (Kuhlia mugil) swimming in a shallow tank. A modified model is studied alongside the original one, in which an additional frontal preference is introduced in the stimulus/response function to account for the angular weighting of interactions. Our study, mostly limited to groups of moderate size (in the order of 100 individuals), focused not only on the transition to schooling induced by increasing the swimming speed, but also on the conditions under which a school can exhibit milling dynamics and the corresponding behavioural transitions. We show the existence of a transition region between milling and schooling, in which the school exhibits multistability and intermittence between schooling and milling for the same combination of individual parameters. We also show that milling does not occur for arbitrarily large groups, mainly due to a distance dependence interaction of the model and information propagation delays in the school, which cause conflicting reactions for large groups. We finally discuss the biological significance of our findings, especially the dependence of behavioural transitions on social interactions, which were reported by Gautrais et al to be adaptive in the experimental conditions.

Abstract:Fish are observed to school in different configurations. However, how and why fish maintain a stable schooling formation still remains unclear. This work presents a numerical study of the dense schooling of two free swimmers by a hybrid method of the multi-agent deep reinforcement learning and the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. Active control policies are developed by synchronously training the leader to swim at a given speed and orientation and the follower to hold close proximity to the leader. After training, the swimmers could resist the strong hydrodynamic force to remain in stable formations and meantime swim in desired path, only by their tail-beat flapping. The tail movement of the swimmers in the stable formations are irregular and asymmetrical, indicating the swimmers are carefully adjusting their body-kinematics to balance the hydrodynamic force. In addition, a significant decrease in the mean amplitude and the cost of transport is found for the followers, indicating these swimmers could maintain the swimming speed with less efforts. The results also show that the side-by-side formation is hydrodynamically more stable but energetically less efficient than other configurations, while the full-body staggered formation is energetically more efficient as a whole.

Abstract:The collective motion of biological species has robust and flexible characteristics. Since the individual of the biological group interacts with other neighbors asymmetrically, which means the pairwise interaction presents asymmetrical characteristics during the collective motion, building the model of the pairwise interaction of the individual is still full of challenges. Based on deep learning (DL) technology, experimental data of the collective motion on Hemigrammus rhodostomus fish are analyzed to build an individual interaction model with multi-parameter input. First, a Deep Neural Network (DNN) structure for pairwise interaction is designed. Then, the interaction model is obtained by means of DNN proper training. We propose a novel key neighbor selection strategy, which is called the Largest Visual Pressure Selection (LVPS) method, to deal with multi-neighbor interaction. Based on the information of the key neighbor identified by LVPS, the individual uses the properly trained DNN model for the pairwise interaction. Compared with other key neighbor selection strategies, the statistical properties of the collective motion simulated by our proposed DNN model are more consistent with those of fish experiments. The simulation shows that our proposed method can extend to large-scale group collective motion for aggregation control. Thereby, the individual can take advantage of quite limited local information to collaboratively achieve large-scale collective motion. Finally, we demonstrate swarm robotics collective motion in an experimental platform. The proposed control method is simple to use, applicable for different scales, and fast for calculation. Thus, it has broad application prospects in the fields of multi-robotics control, intelligent transportation systems, saturated cluster attacks, and multi-agent logistics, among other fields.

Abstract:Individual computations and social interactions underlying collective behavior in groups of animals are of great ethological, behavioral, and theoretical interest. While complex individual behaviors have successfully been parsed into small dictionaries of stereotyped behavioral modes, studies of collective behavior largely ignored these findings; instead, their focus was on inferring single, mode-independent social interaction rules that reproduced macroscopic and often qualitative features of group behavior. Here we bring these two approaches together to predict individual swimming patterns of adult zebrafish in a group. We show that fish alternate between an active mode in which they are sensitive to the swimming patterns of conspecifics, and a passive mode where they ignore them. Using a model that accounts for these two modes explicitly, we predict behaviors of individual fish with high accuracy, outperforming previous approaches that assumed a single continuous computation by individuals and simple metric or topological weighing of neighbors behavior. At the group level, switching between active and passive modes is uncorrelated among fish, yet correlated directional swimming behavior still emerges. Our quantitative approach for studying complex, multi-modal individual behavior jointly with emergent group behavior is readily extensible to additional behavioral modes and their neural correlates, as well as to other species.

Abstract:Collective motion is one of the most ubiquitous behaviours displayed by social organisms and has led to the development of numerous models. Recent advances in the understanding of sensory system and information processing by animals impel to revise classical assumptions made in decisional algorithms. In this context, we present a new model describing the three dimensional visual sensory system of fish that adjust their trajectory according to their perception field. Furthermore, we introduce a new stochastic process based on a probability distribution function to move in targeted directions rather than on a summation of influential vectors as it is classically assumed by most models. We show that this model can spontaneously transits from consensus to choice. In parallel, we present experimental results of zebrafish (alone or in group of 10) swimming in both homogeneous and heterogeneous environments. We use these experimental data to set the parameter values of our model and show that this perception-based approach can simulate the collective motion of species showing cohesive behaviour in heterogeneous environments. Finally, we discuss the advances of this multilayer model and its possible outcomes in biological, physical and robotic sciences.

Abstract:The integration of biomimetic robots in a fish school may enable a better understanding of collective behaviour, offering a new experimental method to test group feedback in response to behavioural modulations of its ‘engineered’ member. Here, we analyse a robotic fish and individual golden shiners ( Notemigonus crysoleucas ) swimming together in a water tunnel at different flow velocities. We determine the positional preference of fish with respect to the robot, and we study the flow structure using a digital particle image velocimetry system. We find that biomimetic locomotion is a determinant of fish preference as fish are more attracted towards the robot when its tail is beating rather than when it is statically immersed in the water as a ‘dummy’. At specific conditions, the fish hold station behind the robot, which may be due to the hydrodynamic advantage obtained by swimming in the robot's wake. This work makes a compelling case for the need of biomimetic locomotion in promoting robot–animal interactions and it strengthens the hypothesis that biomimetic robots can be used to study and modulate collective animal behaviour.

Abstract:Abstract It has long been proposed that flying and swimming animals could exploit neighbour-induced flows. Despite this it is still not clear whether, and if so how, schooling fish coordinate their movement to benefit from the vortices shed by others. To address this we developed bio-mimetic fish-like robots which allow us to measure directly the energy consumption associated with swimming together in pairs (the most common natural configuration in schooling fish). We find that followers, in any relative position to a near-neighbour, could obtain hydrodynamic benefits if they exhibit a tailbeat phase difference that varies linearly with front-back distance, a strategy we term ‘vortex phase matching’. Experiments with pairs of freely-swimming fish reveal that followers exhibit this strategy, and that doing so requires neither a functioning visual nor lateral line system. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that fish typically, but not exclusively, use vortex phase matching to save energy.

Abstract:A simulation model of collective motion of a fish group was presented to investigate the role of the allelomimetic action of fish individual in schooling behaviors and in collective evasion of predator attacking.Allelomimesis, doing what your neighbors do, is considered as the essential tactic of decision-making by which coherent collective behaviors such as schooling are generated. To simulate a fish schooling behavior in various situations by a single model, we assumed that a fish individual can make three kinds of actions simultaneously, allelomimetic action, avoiding collisions with neighbors and evasion of predator, and it is determined depending on the situation what action each individual gives priority over the other actions. We took account of the effect of energy consumption on the actions.We investigated using the present model how and to what extent fish individuals mimic their neighbors in case of no predator so that the fish group shows good schooling behaviors. The main purpose of the present modeling is to investigate how much each individual pays attention to predator besides neighboring fishes in order to evade predator's attacking without straying from the school.

Abstract:We previously reported that horse antiserum against the Japanese equine influenza vaccine virus, A/equine/La Plata/1993 (LP93) exhibited reduced cross‐neutralization against some Florida sublineage Clade (Fc) 2 viruses, for example, A/equine/Carlow/2011 (CL11). As a result, Japanese vaccine manufacturers will replace LP93 with A/equine/Yokohama/aq13/2010 (Y10, Fc2). To assess the benefit of updating the vaccine, five horses vaccinated with inactivated Y10 vaccine and five vaccinated with inactivated LP93 were challenged by exposure to a nebulized aerosol of CL11. The durations of pyrexia (≥38.5°C) and other adverse clinical symptoms experienced by the Y10 group were significantly shorter than those of the LP93 group.
