Abstract:Purpose: To examine the potential sex differences in adaptations to combined endurance and strength training in recreationally endurance trained (eumenorrheic) women (n = 9) and men (n = 10). Methods: Isometric (ISOMmax) and dynamic bilateral leg press (1RM), countermovement jump (CMJ), running performance (3,000 m time trial), lean mass and body fat % (LEAN and FAT% determined by dual X-ray absorptiometry) as well as serum testosterone and cortisol (TES and COR, respectively, measured using hormone-specific immunoassay kits) were examined before a control period and pre, mid, and post a supervised 10-week combined high-intensity interval endurance training (4 × 4 min intervals and 3 × 3 × 100 m repeated sprints) and mixed maximal and explosive strength training. No more than 2 weeks separated training and testing for either women or men and all women were tested in the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle to minimize the possible influence of menstrual cycle phase on performance measures. Results: Absolute and relative changes in 1RM, CMJ, 3,000 m, LEAN, and FAT% were similar between groups. The only statistically significant differences observed between groups were observed at post and included a larger Δ% increase in ISOMmax force in men and a relatively greater Δ% decrease in serum TES in women. Conclusion: Women and men can achieve similar relative adaptations in dynamic maximal strength and CMJ as well as endurance performance gains and body composition over the same high-intensity 10-week combined program, although relative adaptations in TES may differ.
Body composition, fitness, and metabolic health during strength and endurance training and their combination in middle-aged and older women

Abstract:In this study adaptations in body composition, physical fitness and metabolic health were examined during 21 weeks of endurance and/or strength training in 39- to 64-year-old healthy women. Subjects (n = 62) were randomized into endurance training (E), strength training (S), combined strength and endurance training (SE), or control groups (C). S and E trained 2 and SE 2 + 2 times in a week. Muscle strength and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) were measured. Leg extension strength increased 9 ± 8% in S (P < 0.001), 12 ± 8% in SE (P < 0.001) and 3 ± 4% in E (P = 0.036), and isometric bench press 20% only in both S and SE (P < 0.001). VO2max increased 23 ± 18% in E and 16 ± 12% in SE (both P < 0.001). The changes in the total body fat (dual X-ray absorptiometry) did not differ between groups, but significant decreases were observed in E (−5.9%, P = 0.022) and SE (−4.8%, P = 0.005). Lean mass of the legs increased 2.2–2.9% (P = 0.004–0.010) in S, SE and E. There were no differences between the groups in the changes in blood lipids, blood pressure or serum glucose and insulin. Total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol increased in E. Both S and SE showed small decreases in serum fasting insulin. Both endurance and strength training and their combination led to expected training-specific improvements in physical fitness, without interference in fitness or muscle mass development. All training methods led to increases in lean body mass, but decreases in body fat and modest improvements in metabolic risk factors were more evident with aerobic training than strength training.

Abstract:We assessed the effects of a short-term velocity-based resistance training (VBRT, where exercise intensity is individualized based on the loads and repetitions that maximize power output) program compared with traditional resistance training (TRT, where the same number of repetitions and relative load are used for every individual) on body composition, muscle strength/power, and endurance performance in competitive female cyclists. Seventeen participants were randomly assigned to 6 weeks (two sessions/week) of TRT ( n = 8) or VBRT ( n = 9), during which they maintained their usual endurance program. Both interventions included squat, hip thrust, and split squat exercises. Training loads were continuously registered, and outcomes were measures of muscle strength/power, body composition, and endurance performance (incremental test and 8-min time trial). No differences between TRT and VBRT groups were found for overall internal training loads during resistance training or cycling sessions ( p > 0.05). Both interventions led to significant improvements in all strength/power-related outcomes, but VBRT induced greater improvements than TRT in maximum muscle strength and power as assessed with the hip thrust exercise ( p < 0.05 for the group by time interaction effect). However, no significant group by time interaction effect was found for body composition or endurance performance-related outcomes. In conclusion, the addition of a short-term intervention of VBRT or TRT to the usual training regimen of competitive female cyclists improves muscle strength/power, albeit VBRT might induce superior gains on maximum strength/power for the hip thrust exercise.

Abstract:This study investigated changes in physical fitness, body composition, and blood lipid profile following 24 weeks of 3 volume-equated concurrent strength and endurance training protocols. Physically active, healthy male and female participants (aged 18–40 years) performed strength and endurance sessions on different days (DD; men, n = 21; women, n = 18) or in the same session with endurance preceding strength (ES; men, n = 16; women, n = 15) or vice versa (SE; men, n = 18; women, n = 14). The training volume was matched in all groups. Maximal leg press strength (1-repetition maximum (1RM)) and endurance performance (maximal oxygen consumption during cycling), body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), and blood lipids were measured. 1RM and maximal oxygen consumption increased in all groups in men (12%–17%, p < 0.001; and 7%–18%, p < 0.05–0.001, respectively) and women (13%–21%, p < 0.01–0.001; and 10%–25%, p < 0.01–0.001, respectively). Maximal oxygen consumption increased more in DD vs. ES and SE both in men (p = 0.003–0.008) and women (p = 0.008–0.009). Total body lean mass increased in all groups (3%–5%, p < 0.01–0.001). Only DD led to decreased total body fat (men, −14% ± 15%, p < 0.001; women, −13% ± 14%, p = 0.009) and abdominal-region fat (men, −18% ± 14%, p = 0.003; women, −17% ± 15%, p = 0.003). Changes in blood lipids were correlated with changes in abdominal-region fat in the entire group (r = 0.283, p = 0.005) and in DD (r = 0.550, p = 0.001). In conclusion, all modes resulted in increased physical fitness and lean mass, while only DD led to decreases in fat mass. Same-session SE and ES combined training is effective in improving physical fitness while volume-equated, but more frequent DD training may be more suitable for optimizing body composition and may be possibly useful in early prevention of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Abstract:Abstract Hormonal variations during the menstrual cycle (MC) may influence trainability of strength. We investigated the effects of a follicular phase-based strength training (FT) on muscle strength, muscle volume and microscopic parameters, comparing it to a luteal phase-based training (LT). Eumenorrheic women without oral contraception (OC) (N = 20, age: 25.9 ± 4.5 yr, height: 164.2 ± 5.5 cm, weight: 60.6 ± 7.8 kg) completed strength training on a leg press for three MC, and 9 of them participated in muscle biopsies. One leg had eight training sessions in the follicular phases (FP) and only two sessions in the luteal phases (LP) for follicular phase-based training (FT), while the other leg had eight training sessions in LP and only two sessions in FP for luteal phase-based training (LT). Estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), total testosterone (T), free testosterone (free T) and DHEA-s were analysed once during FP (around day 11) and once during LP (around day 25). Maximum isometric force (F max ), muscle diameter (Mdm), muscle fibre composition (No), fibre diameter (Fdm) and cell nuclei-to-fibre ratio (N/F) were analysed before and after the training intervention. T and free T were higher in FP compared to LP prior to the training intervention (P < 0.05). The increase in F max after FT was higher compared to LT (P <0.05). FT also showed a higher increase in Mdm than LT (P < 0.05). Moreover, we found significant increases in Fdm of fibre type ΙΙ and in N/F only after FT; however, there was no significant difference from LT. With regard to change in fibre composition, no differences were observed between FT and LT. FT showed a higher gain in muscle strength and muscle diameter than LT. As a result, we recommend that eumenorrheic females without OC should base the periodization of their strength training on their individual MC.
Sex-Specific Effects of Respiratory Muscle Endurance Training on Cycling Time Trial Performance in Normoxia and Hypoxia

Abstract:Objectives: We tested the hypotheses that respiratory muscle endurance training (RMET) improves endurance cycling performance differently in women and men and more so in hypoxia than in normoxia. Design: A prospective pre–post cross-over study with two testing conditions. Methods: Healthy and active women (seven, 24 ± 4 years, mean ± standard deviation [SD]) and men (seven, 27 ± 5 years) performed incremental cycling to determine maximum oxygen consumption (VO 2peak ) and power output (W peak ) and on different days two 10-km cycling time trials (TTs) in normoxia and normobaric hypoxia (FiO 2 , 0.135, ~3,500 m equivalent), in a balanced randomized order. Next they performed supervised RMET in normoxia (4 weeks, 5 days/week, 30 min/day eucapnic hyperpnea at ~60% predicted maximum voluntary ventilation) followed by identical post-tests. During TTs, heart rate, ear oximetry reading, and W peak were recorded. Results: The VO 2peak and W peak values were unchanged after RMET. The TT was improved by 7 ± 6% ( p < 0.001) in normoxia and 16 ± 6% ( p < 0.001) in hypoxia. The difference between normoxic and hypoxic TT was smaller after RMET as compared with that before RMET (14% vs . 21%, respectively, p < 0.001). All effects were greater in women ( p < 0.001). The RMET did not change the heart rate or ear oximetry reading during TTs. Conclusion: We found a greater effect of RMET on cycling TT performance in women than in men, an effect more pronounced in hypoxia. These findings are congruent with the contention of a more pronounced performance-limiting role of the respiratory system during endurance exercise in hypoxia compared with normoxia and more so in women whose respiratory system is undersized compared with that of men.

[Palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis in children: endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy using clips for an underestimated problem].

Abstract:BACKGROUND Palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis are defined as perspiration exceeding the body's 'normal' physiological need for thermal regulation. This condition affects about 1% of adolescents and children and may lead to psychosocial problems and poor school performance. CASE DESCRIPTION We carried out an endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) with clips in a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl who suffered from debilitating palmar and axillary hyperhidrosis. They were able to quickly resume their general daily activities and both were free of symptoms during an outpatient visit after 6 weeks. CONCLUSION ETS using clips is a safe, relatively simple and effective technique, which may provide a permanent solution. ETS can be an option in case of therapy-resistant debilitating hyperhidrosis. This surgical procedure should be carefully considered, possible causes should be excluded and ETS should not be offered as the first treatment option for children.
Effectiveness of maximum, explosive and combined strength training on endurance runners performance indicators: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of practicing maximum strength (MAX), explosive strength (EXP), or both combined (COMB) on seven runners’ performance indicators: vertical jump (VJ), one-repetition maximum squat (1RM), peak velocity/peak running speed (PV), lactate threshold (LT), middle-distance time trial (TT), maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), and running economy (RE). Methods: A systematic review (Scopus, Web of Science, Sports Discuss, PubMed) with meta-analysis was conducted following PRISMA standards. Inclusion criteria (PICOS) were: Recreational or well-trained athletes aged 18-45 performing concurrent training for at least five weeks. The search terms used were related to different types of strength/endurance and participants’ age and sports modality. Twenty manuscripts were selected, and quality assessed with PEDro. Results: MAX training is more effective than EXP and COMB in improving VJ, 1RM, and PV, while COMB is more effective than MAX and EXP to enhance TT. MAX is more effective than EXP in improving LT. Concurrent workouts do not provide additional benefits to VO2max. It is unknown which strength modality (MAX, EXP, or COMB) is more effective in improving RE. Conclusion: Concurrent training is more effective than single-mode endurance training for enhancing specific performance variables in adult endurance runners. Middle- and long-distance runners may consider incorporating MAX training to target specific goals (i.e., improving VJ, 1RM, LT, PV) while utilizing COMB training to enhance TT. Certain variables may benefit from EXP. New randomized controlled trials are required to confirm these findings. The Effect of Time-Equated Concurrent Training Programs in Resistance-Trained Men

Abstract:The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effects of three different concurrent training (CT) programs and a resistance training (RT) program. Twenty-three resistance trained men (age: 24 ± 3 years) were randomized into four groups: concurrent RT and high intensity interval cycling (CTH, n = 6), concurrent RT and moderate intensity continuous cycling (CTM, n = 5), RT and barbell circuit training (RTC, n = 6), or RT only (RT, n = 6). Back squat and bench press strength, quadriceps, and pectoralis muscle thickness, VO2peak, and maximum workload (Wmax, Watts) were assessed. Squat strength gains were meaningful in all groups and comparable among CTH (16.88 kg [95% CrI: 11.15, 22.63]), CTM (25.54 kg [95% CrI: 19.24, 31.96]), RTC (17.5 kg [95% CrI: 11.66, 23.39]), and RT (20.36 kg [95% CrI: 15.29, 25.33]) groups. Bench press strength gains were meaningful in all groups and comparable among CTH (11.86 kg [95% CrI: 8.28, 15.47]), CTM (10.3 kg [95% CrI: 6.49, 14.13]), RTC (4.84 kg [95% CrI: 1.31, 8.47]), and RT (10.16 kg [95% CrI: 7.02, 13.22]) groups. Quadriceps hypertrophy was meaningful in all groups and comparable among CTH (2.29 mm [95% CrI: 0.84, 3.76]), CTM (3.41 mm [95% CrI: 1.88, 4.91]), RTC (2.6 mm [95% CrI: 1.17, 4.05]), and RT (2.83 mm [95% CrI: 1.55, 4.12]) groups. Pectoralis hypertrophy was meaningful in CTH (2.29 mm [95% CrI: −0.52, 5.1]), CTM (5.14 mm [95% CrI: 2.1, 8.15]), and RTC (7.19 mm [95% CrI: 4.26, 10.02]) groups, but not in the RT group (1 mm [95% CrI: −1.59, 3.59]); further, between-group contrasts indicated less pectoralis growth in the RT compared to the RTC group. Regarding cardiovascular outcomes, only the RTH and RTM groups experienced meaningful improvements in either measure (VO2peak or Wmax). These data suggest that the interference effect on maximal strength and hypertrophy can be avoided when the aerobic training is moderate intensity cycling, high intensity cycling, or a novel barbell circuit for ~one hour per week and on non-RT days. However, the barbell circuit failed to elicit meaningful cardiovascular adaptations.

Abstract:Abstract Changes in serum biochemistry and skeletal muscle of horses in response to individual endurance rides of varying distance have been reported, as have the effects of submaximal treadmill training. This study evaluated the effects of a controlled field endurance training programme on energy metabolism. Five Arabian horses 6.8 ± 2.0 years (mean ± standard deviation) were trained for 16 weeks over progressively longer distances. The biceps femoris, triceps long head, and semitendinosus muscles were biopsied before and after 4-weekly runs of 10, 20 and 30 miles, respectively, and before and after 10, 20, 30 and 50 miles of a fourth run at the end of the training programme to measure 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (HAD) and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activities and triglyceride (TG) and glycogen concentrations in those biopsies. Blood samples were obtained simultaneously to measure serum TG, free fatty acid (FFA), glycerol, glucagon, insulin, and cortisol concentrations. Data were analysed using RM-ANOVA for effects of training and distance. was considered significant. Training increased resting glycogen and TG concentrations in the biceps ( , ), triceps ( , ) and semitendinosus ( , ), respectively. Both HAD and SDH activities increased in the biceps femoris ( ; ) and triceps ( ; ), respectively, but not in the semitendinosus. There was no training effect detected on serum hormone responses to exercise distance although serum glycerol ( ), glucagon ( ) and cortisol ( ) concentrations increased with increasing run distance, while insulin concentration decreased ( ). Glucagon and cortisol concentrations were correlated (r = 0.67; ). Serum TG decreased with exercise but at a slower rate following training, and serum FFA were higher during exercise following training when compared to the partially trained state. Overall, endurance training enhanced peripheral mobilisation of fat and its utilisation by working muscle, and resting muscle glycogen stores increased.
Transplanted Neonatal Cardiomyocytes as a Potential Biological Pacemaker in Pigs with Complete Atrioventricular Block

Abstract:Background. Sinus node dysfunction and severe heart block are major indications for electronic pacemaker implantation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the feasibility of an alternative approach by using spontaneously excitable cell grafts to serve as a biological pacemaker. Methods. Enzymatically isolated neonatal atrial cardiomyocytes (including sinus nodal cells) were grafted into the free wall of the left ventricle of 5 male pigs. In the control group (n=4), the medium was used for injecting. Three weeks after the transplantation the pigs underwent catheter ablation of the atrioventricular (AV) node. Microelectrode technique was used to record the transmembrane action potential of myocytes from cell- and medium-injected preparations. Immunohistochemistry was used to verify the grafted cells and the establishment of the gap junctions between donor and host cardiomyocytes. Results. After the creation of complete AV-block, a higher average idioventricular rate was observed in cell-grafted pigs than that in control pigs (89±13 vs. 30±11 bpm, P<0.05). Administering isoprenaline caused a significant increase in the idioventricular rate from 89±13 to 120±18 bpm in the cell-grafted animals (P<0.05). Microelectrode recordings showed that the spontaneously beating rate was significantly higher in the cell-implanted than that in the control preparations (82±17 vs. 33±13 bpm, P<0.05). Furthermore, the immunofluorescence microscopy identified the DAPI-labeled donor cells, and the connexin-43 and N-cadherin positive junctions between them and host cardiomyocytes. Conclusion. Grafted neonatal atrial cardiomyocytes are able to survive and integrate into the host myocardium, and show a pacing function that can be modulated by autonomic agents.
Strength Training Frequency and Athletic Performance in High School Girls Basketball Players

Abstract:This study investigated the effects of a six-week strength training intervention on the physical fitness of female high school athletes, with a focus on training frequency. Twenty-three female high school basketball athletes were recruited and split into two groups: one group participated in strength training once per week (S1), while the other participated in two training sessions per week (S2). The groups were not random as training sessions were voluntary, and some participants were only able to train once per week. Participants were tested before and after the intervention, and the data included: age, body height, body mass, body fat percentage, grip strength, leg/back dynamometer (LBD) strength, a seated medicine ball throw (MBT), a vertical jump (VJ), 505 tests from each foot, 0-5, 0-10, and 0-20 sprint times, and multistage fitness test shuttles. Data were analyzed by a two (time) x two (group) repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA; p < 0.05). When significant F ratios were detected in any ANOVA calculations, post hoc pairwise comparisons were conducted using the Bonferroni adjustment procedure. There were significant main effects for time that indicated the following: increased body height, body mass, grip strength, LBD strength, MBT distance, and VJ height, faster 505 times, and slower 0-5 and 0-10 m sprint times (p ≤ 0.021). There were no significant time by group ANOVAs or between-group main effects. These performance changes occurred irrespective of training frequency. High school girls who participate in at least one strength training session per week can improve their strength (grip, LBD), power (MBT, VJ), and change-of-direction speed (505).
Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and its Association with Coronary Artery Disease Among an Urban Elderly South Indian Population (CURES- 145).

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its association with coronary artery disease (CAD) among an elderly urban population in south India. METHODS Individuals aged ≥60 years (n=222) were recruited from Phase 3 of the Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiology Study. Anthropometric and blood pressure measurements, oral glucose tolerance test, lipids and fasting insulin were carried out. Prevalence of MS was estimated using the World Health Organization (WHO), Modified National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP-III) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Diagnosis of CAD was made by resting 12 lead ECG and/or past history of documented myocardial infarction. RESULTS MS was identified in 45.9% (n=102) by modified ATP-III, 37.4% (n=83) by IDF and 45.5% (n=101) by WHO criteria respectively. Only 61 subjects (27.5%) were identified by all the three criteria. Female subjects had a significantly higher prevalence of MS compared to their male counterparts (45.8 vs, 31.0%, p=0.023 respectively) according to IDF criteria. It was observed that 59.8%, 53% and 45.6% of the subjects had all five abnormalities according to modified ATP-III, IDF and WHO, respectively. Subjects with MS had significantly higher prevalence of CAD compared to those without MS using all the 3 criteria (modified ATP-III -20.6 vs.8.5%; IDF-20.5 vs.10.1%; WHO-19.8 vs.9.1% respectively). The odds ratio of developing CAD among MS subjects was 2.93, 2.39 and 2.48 compared to those without MS after adjusting for age, gender and family history of diabetes according to modified ATP-III, IDF and WHO, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Nearly 40% of the elderly urban south Indians have MS and it is strongly associated with CAD.
The Effects of Concurrent Resistance and Endurance Training Follow a Specific Detraining Cycle in Young School Girls

Abstract:The Effects of Concurrent Resistance and Endurance Training Follow a Specific Detraining Cycle in Young School Girls The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of an 8-week training period of strength training alone (GR), or combined strength and endurance training (GCOM), followed by 12-weeks of de-training (DT) on body composition, power strength and VO 2 max adaptations in a schooled group of adolescent girls. Methods: Sixty-seven healthy girls recruited from a Portuguese public high school (age: 13.5±1.03 years, from 7 th and 9 th grade) were divided into three experimental groups to train twice a week for 8 wks: GR (n=21), GCOM (n=25) and a control group (GC: n=21; no training program). Anthropometric parameters variables as well as performance variables (strength and aerobic fitness) were assessed. Results: No significant training-induced differences were observed in 1kg and 3kg medicine ball throw gains (2.7 to 10.8%) between GR and GCOM groups, whereas no significant changes were observed after a DT period in any of the experimental groups. Significant training-induced gains in CMVJ (8 to 12%) and CMSLJ (0.8 to 5.4%) were observed in the experimental groups. Time of 20m significantly decreased (GR: -11.5% and GCOM: -10%) after both treatment periods, whereas only the GR group kept the running speed after a DT period of 12 weeks. After training VO 2 max increased only slightly for GCOM (4.0%). No significant changes were observed after the DT period in all groups, except to GCOM in CMVJ and CMSLJ. Conclusion: Performing simultaneous strength and endurance training in the same workout does not appear to negatively influence power strength and aerobic fitness development in adolescent girls. Indeed, concurrent strength and endurance training seems to be an effective, well-rounded exercise program that can be prescribed as a means to improve initial or general strength in healthy school girls. De-training period was not sufficient to reduce the overall training effects.

Abstract:Both strength and endurance training are included in global exercise recommendations and are the main components of training programs for competitive sports. While an abundance of research has been published regarding concurrent strength and endurance training, only a small portion of this research has been conducted in females or has addressed their unique physiological circumstances (e.g., hormonal profiles related to menstrual cycle phase, menstrual dysfunction, and hormonal contraceptive use), which may influence training responses and adaptations.

Abstract:The effects of a 6-month resistance training (2 day/week) designed to develop both strength and power on neural activation by electromyographic activity (EMG) of the agonist and antagonist knee extensors, muscle fibre proportion and areas of type I, IIa, and IIb of the vastus lateralis (VL) as well as maximal concentric one repetition maximum (1 RM) strength and maximal and explosive isometric strength of the knee extensors were examined. A total of 10 middle-aged men (M40; 42 +/- 2), 11 middle-aged women (W40; 39 +/- 3), 11 elderly men (M70; 72 +/- 3) and 10 elderly women (W70; 67 +/- 3) served as subjects. Maximal and explosive strength values remained unaltered during a 1-month control period. After the 6-month training maximal isometric and 1RM strength values increased in M40 by 28 +/- 14 and 27 +/- 7% (P < 0.001), in M70 by 27 +/- 17 and 21 +/- 9% (P < 0.001), in W40 by 27 +/- 19 and 35 +/- 14% (P < 0.001) and in W70 by 26 +/- 14 and 31 +/- 14% (P < 0.001), respectively. Explosive strength improved in M40 by 21 +/- 41% (P < 0.05), in M70 by 21 +/- 24% (P < 0.05), in W40 by 32 +/- 45% (NS) and in W70 by 22 +/- 28% (P < 0.05). The iEMGs of the VL and vastus medialis (VM) muscles increased during the training in M40 (P < 0.001 and 0.05), in M70 (P < 0.001 and 0.05), in W40 (P < 0.001 and 0.05) and in W70 (P < 0.001 and 0.05). The antagonist biceps femoris (BF) activity during the isometric knee extension remained unaltered in M40, in W40, and in M70 but decreased in W70 (from 42 +/- 34 to 32 +/- 26%; P < 0.05) during the first 2 months of training. Significant increases occurred during the training in the mean fibre areas of type I in W70 (P < 0.05) and of overall type II along with a specific increase in IIa in both W40 (P < 0.05) and in W70 (P < 0.05), while the changes in the male groups were not statistically significant. The individual percentage values for type II fibres at pretraining correlated with the individual values for 1 RM strength in both W70 (r=0.80; P < 0.05) and M70 (r=0.61; P < 0.05) and also at post-training for maximal isometric torque in W70 (r=0.77, P < 0.05). The findings support the concept of the important role of neural adaptations in strength and power development in middle-aged and older men and women. The muscle fibre distribution (percentage type II fibres) seems to be an important contributor on muscle strength in older people, especially older women. Women of both age groups appear to be hypertrophically responsive to the total body strength training protocol performed two times a week including heavier and lower (for fast movements) loads designed for both maximal strength and power development, while such a programme has limited effects on muscle hypertrophy in men.

Effect of Strength and Endurance Training Sequence on Endurance Performance

Abstract:This review investigates the effect of two different concurrent training sequences on endurance performance. The sequences investigated are Endurance-Resistance (ER) and Resistance-Endurance (RE). A literature search is conducted of the SPORTDiscus and Medline databases. The included studies are randomized control trials, which compare the effect of ER and RE on at least one endurance performance variable. A PEDro scale is used to assess the methodological quality of the articles in this review. Of a total of 152 articles identified during the initial screening, 15 studies meet the inclusion criteria. These studies include 426 participants (298 males and 128 females), with 212 of the participants training with ER and 214 with RE. The results are presented as the percentage change of the mean from pre- to post-test. All the studies show an improvement in endurance from pre to post for both interventions, except for the RE group in one study. This review finds small and non-conclusive sequence effects between ER and RE, suggesting that the sequence of concurrent training is not of great importance in relation to endurance performance.

Abstract:Horse riding (HR) is a sport harmonized with rider and horse. HR is renowned as an effective sport for young and old women and men. There is rare study regarding comparison between elite horse riders and amateurs. We aimed to investigate comprehensive ranges of parameters such as change of lactate, heart rate, calorie, VO2max, skeletal muscle mass, body water, body fat, etc between amateurs and professionals to emphasize HR not only as a sport training but also as a therapeutic aspect. We performed 3 experiments for comparing physical fitness, body compositions, lactate value, heart rate and calorie consumption change before and after riding between amateurs and elites. Around 3 yr riding experienced elites are preeminent at balance capability compared to 1 yr riding experienced amateurs. During 18 min horse riding, skeletal muscle mass and body fat were interestingly increased and decreased, respectively. Lactate response was more sensitive in elites rather than amateurs and its recovery was reversely reacted. Exercise intensity estimated from heart rate was significantly higher in elites (P<0.05). The similar pattern of calorie consumption during riding between amateurs and elites was shown. Horse riding possibly induces various physiological (muscle strength, balance, oxidative capability, flexibility, and metabolic control) changes within body and is thus highly recommended as combined exercise for women, children, and aged as therapeutic and leisure sport activity.
