Abstract:Parent–grandparent co-parenting has become a common mode in Chinese families; however, its correlation with children's development in the long run remains unclear. Herein, a 10-month follow-up survey was conducted among 253 preschool children and their parents from Chinese parent–grandparent co-parenting families. It aimed to examine the bidirectional longitudinal correlation of children's effortful control with mother–grandparent and father–grandparent co-parenting relationships, as well as the dissimilarity of the two co-parenting relationships. In addition, the moderating role of maternal parenting self-efficacy in these relationships was also investigated. A cross-lagged model showed that the (1) mother–grandparent co-parenting relationship (T1) positively predicted the father–grandparent co-parenting relationship (T2), (2) dissimilarity of the mother–grandparent and father–grandparent co-parenting relationships (T1) negatively predicted children's effortful control (T2), and (3) maternal parenting self-efficacy significantly moderated the predictive effect of children's effortful control on a father–grandparent co-parenting relationship. However, a further simple slope analysis showed that after controlling the father–grandparent co-parenting relationship (T1), the children's effortful control (T1) did not significantly predict the father–grandparent co-parenting relationship (T2) either in the high or low maternal parenting self-efficacy group. These results indicated that in Chinese parent–grandparent co-parenting families, the father-grandparent co-parenting relationship was influenced by the mother–grandparent co-parenting relationship, and similar mother–grandparent and father–grandparent co-parenting relationships were conducive to the development of the children's effortful control.

Abstract:Chinese left-behind families (CLBF) refers to families in which both parents are rural-to-urban migrant workers while their children remain in rural regions under the care of grandparents. CLBF has become an issue of growing public concern. However, the role of relationship quality and personal resilience in promoting grandparents’ and children’s well-being in these families has not been fully recognized. Informed by the family systems theory and the ecological view of well-being, this study aimed to investigate how grandparent–child dyads show reciprocal associations between relationship quality and subjective well-being (SWB) and the extent to which resilience accounts for such reciprocal associations. Self-reported data were collected from 120 left-behind grandparent–child pairs. Analyses using the actor–partner interdependence model indicated that both grandparents and children perceived level of relationship quality showed significant associations with SWB of their own (i.e., actor effects) and SWB of the other (i.e., partner effects). Children’s resilience mediated all of the actor and partner effects of relationship quality on SWB, whereas grandparents’ resilience only mediated their actor effect and children’s partner effect. These findings indicated the interdependence of grandparents and children, and highlighted the importance of grandparent–child relationship quality and resilience in promoting SWB. Future intervention programs are suggested to integrate the enhancement of grandparent–child relationship quality and the building of resilience to boost the well-being of left-behind family members.
Contributors to well-being of Chinese left-behind families: A dyadic perspective from family resilience and grandparent-grandchild relationship

Abstract:There is evidence that grandchildren and grandparents in Chinese left-behind families (CLBF) suffer from immense life stressors. The well-being of both generations is of great concern. Guided by the family adjustment and adaptation response model and ecological model of well-being, the present study aimed to investigate the dyadic associations between family resilience and subjective well-being (SWB) of left-behind grandchildren and grandparents. Furthermore, we explored the extent to which relationship quality accounts for such reciprocal associations. A sample of 130 left-behind grandparent-grandchild (GP-GC) pairs completed self-reported questionnaires. Actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) revealed that both grandchildren's and grandparents' reported family resilience positively associated with their own SWB but not the other's SWB. Grandchildren's and grandparents' perceived relationship quality mediated the association between their perceived family resilience and their own SWB. Moreover, grandchildren-perceived relationship quality mediated the association between grandchildren-perceived family resilience and grandparents' SWB. Meanwhile, grandparent-perceived relationship quality mediated the association between grandparent-perceived family resilience and grandchildren's SWB. The findings highlighted the significance of family resilience and relationship quality in boosting the two generations' SWB in CLBF. The results also suggested that left-behind grandchildren and their grandparents depend on each other. Future intervention programs could be benefitted from integrating the enhancement of family resilience and improvement of grandparent-grandchild relationship quality to promote the well-being of left-behind family members.
Links between parent–grandparent coparenting, maternal parenting and young children’s executive function in urban China

Abstract:Parent-grandparent coparenting is a common phenomenon in mainland China; however, little is known about its relationship with children's cognitive development. This study investigates the links between parent-grandparent coparenting and young children’s executive function (EF) and examines the potential mediating role of maternal parenting between coparenting and EF in Chinese urban families. A total of 122 preschool children (58 girls) and their mothers participated in this study. Children’s EF was assessed using measures of working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control. Their mothers were asked about parent-grandparent coparenting, maternal parenting (i.e. maternal nurturing and stress), and children’s temperament. The findings showed that parent-grandparent coparenting was indirectly related to cognitive flexibility, a dimension of EF, and this relationship was mediated by maternal nurturing and maternal stress. No direct impact of parent-grandparent coparenting on EF was found. The findings highlight the contribution of supportive parent-grandparent coparenting to children’s cognitive flexibility.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This study aimed to examine the influence of parent-grandparent co-parenting on children’s problem behaviors and its potential mechanisms. Participants were 412 children aged 3 to 6 years from four kindergartens in Shanghai, China. Their mothers were asked to complete a series of questionnaires including the parent-grandparent co-parenting scale, parenting style scale, parent-child relationship scale, and their grandparents were asked to complete children’s behavior evaluation scale. Research Findings: The results showed that: (1) Supportive co-parenting was associated with less internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors in preschool children, and unsupportive co-parenting was associated with more internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors; (2) Supportive parent-grandparent co-parenting was negatively associated with children’s internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors mainly through maternal authoritative parenting and mother-child conflict, and unsupportive parent-grandparent co-parenting was positively associated with children’s internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors mainly through maternal authoritarian parenting and mother-child conflict, or directly through mother-child conflict. Practice or Policy: These findings provide valuable information on the importance of parenting styles and parent-child relationships between parent-grandparent co-parenting and children’s problem behaviors in Chinese culture.

Distinct patterns of grandparental involvement in childrearing and Chinese preschoolers' social-emotional development.

Abstract:Grandparental involvement in childrearing has been associated with children's social-emotional development, yet findings are mixed. Grandparental involvement is a multidimensional concept that includes both quantity (i.e., the degree of grandparental involvement) and quality aspects (i.e., the quality of parent-grandparent coparenting and the quality of grandparenting practices). This study included both quantity and quality aspects to identify heterogeneous patterns of grandparental involvement and examined the associations between distinct patterns of grandparental involvement and children's social-emotional outcomes. Participants were 428 families with Chinese preschoolers (Mage = 53.75 months, SD = 10.32; 51.4% boys). Primary parental and grandparental caregivers completed the questionnaires. Four patterns of grandparental involvement emerged: the low-involvement mediocre-quality, the median, the high-involvement uneven-quality, and the high-involvement high-quality groups. Heterogeneous patterns of grandparental involvement exist and are differentially associated with children's social-emotional development. Children with grandparents in the high-involvement high-quality group demonstrated higher levels of social skills than those in the low-involvement mediocre-quality group and the high-involvement uneven-quality group. They also showed the lowest level of problem behaviors. This study highlights variations in grandparental involvement and helps to clarify previous inconsistent findings regarding the role of grandparental involvement in child development. Abstract:Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Ahead of Print. More and more grandparents are involved in parenting and share the responsibility of raising children with parents in China. Less is known, however, regarding the mutual effects of caregivers on children in intergenerational coparenting families. This study aimed to examine how mothers' and grandmothers' self-control, mother-grandmother coparenting relationships, and caregiver-child attachment were associated and to investigate whether the pathways were different in mother-child and grandmother-child dyads. Participants were mothers and grandmothers from 501 intergenerational coparenting households. The results from Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Modeling (APIMeM) indicated that mothers' and grandmothers' self-control were indirectly related to their own caregiver-child attachment through their self-report coparenting relationships. Additionally, the effect of mothers' self-control spilled over to the grandmother-child attachment through grandmothers' self-report coparenting relationships. Overall, the findings indicated that mothers' and grandmothers' self-control, mother-grandmother coparenting relationships, and their attachment to the child significantly differed between mother-child dyads and grandmother-child dyads. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of women caregiver-child attachment processes and highlight the implications of using the dyadic approach in understanding and improving family functioning in intergenerational coparenting families, which provide implications for family interventions.

Abstract:The present study examined the mechanisms by which family environment, parent–grandparent coparenting, effortful control, and early child-care experiences influenced young children’s social adaptation in the Chinese context. A sample of 315 mothers of 2–3-year-olds (M = 33.36 months; SD = 5.10) in Beijing, China completed questionnaires to report children’s temperament, family process, and children’s social adaptation. Using the approach of conditional process analysis, the results revealed moderated mediation models that children’s effortful control had a mediating effect on the association between their family process and social adaptation, while the effect of effortful control on social adaptation was contingent on children’s early child-care experiences, with a stronger positive effect of effortful control among children who engaged for longer periods of child-care experiences. Findings point to the importance of understanding the role of family process and children’s effortful control in the early development of social adaptation.

Abstract:Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Ahead of Print. Prior studies on coparenting have primarily focused on mothers and fathers, neglecting coparenting dynamics in multi-generational families. This study aimed to investigate coparenting perceptions among mothers, fathers and grandparents, and explore the associations between the coparenting relationship and adolescent problem behavior, as well as demographic characteristics. The sample included 1163 families with children aged 10–13 years. Mothers (n = 997) and fathers (n = 863) provided ratings of their coparenting relationship toward their partners and one grandparent, while grandparents (n = 249) reported on the coparenting relationship with mothers. Results showed that compared to mothers, fathers reported more undermining of their own parenting by their partner. They were more supportive of their partner's parenting and more positive about the division of labor. Fathers rated the overall coparenting relationship more positively than mothers, as indicated by the General Coparenting Scale. Notably, grandparents reported significantly more positive coparenting relations with mothers than mothers' reports of coparenting with grandparents, expressing affirmation of parental competency and alignment with parenting practices. More positive coparenting was associated with less problem behaviors, which was true for coparenting across parents and grandparents. Furthermore, older adolescent age and higher socioeconomic status were significantly correlated with increased coparenting agreement and closeness. Maternal and paternal grandmothers did not differ in their ratings of the coparenting relationship with the child's mother. These findings underscore the significance of recognizing differential perceptions among family members regarding coparenting behaviors, providing valuable insights for tailoring specific recommendations to enhance coparenting quality within diverse families.

Abstract:Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Ahead of Print. Numerous studies have shown that co-parenting plays an important role in marital and parent-child interactions. However, little is known about the bidirectional associations between positive co-parenting and marital and parent-child factors, as well as the dynamic underlying mechanisms. This study used cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) to explore the bidirectional longitudinal relationship between positive co-parenting, marital satisfaction, and parental involvement among Chinese parents from a positive family multiple systems perspective. A sample of 668 father-mother dyads (father's Mage = 36.47, SDage = 5.34; mother's Mage = 35.45, SDage = 5.07) completed a series of questionnaires at three time points (approximately spaced 1 year between each time point). The results showed that positive co-parenting positively predicted marital satisfaction and parental involvement and that marital satisfaction positively influenced parents' positive co-parenting, whereas the effect of parental involvement on positive co-parenting was significant among fathers. Additionally, fathers' marital satisfaction can affect their involvement, but this effect is negligible among mothers. Finally, parental marital satisfaction mediated the relationship between positive co-parenting and the next stage of positive co-parenting. This study provided new ideas and interventions to strengthen family cohesion and harmony.

Abstract:Abstract This study aimed to examine the role of grandparental co-residence in shaping coparenting patterns in the Chinese family context. Using a sample of 5,795 children (Mean age = 6.74 years; SD = 3.82) from the China Family Panel Studies 2012-2018, we offered a novel typology of six coparenting patterns based on daytime and nighttime childcare information: a) grandparental care only (15.4%); b) grandparent-parent coparenting (10.9%); c) parental care only (44.5%); d) grandparent-private coparenting (4.2%); e) parent-private coparenting (16%); and f) private care only (e.g., paid nanny, nursery schools/kindergartens, and others, 9.1%). Fixed-effects multinominal logistic regression was applied to investigate the effects of grandparental co-residence on daytime and nighttime childcare, and on daily coparenting patterns over time, controlling for a set of child and parental characteristics and family conditions. Grandmother co-residence contributed to both daytime and nighttime grandparenting, while grandfather co-residence increased the likelihood of grandparenting and private care during the daytime. In terms of daily coparenting, grandmother co-residence was associated with increased probability of grandparent-parent coparenting as well as grandparent-private coparenting, while grandfather co-residence merely increased the likelihood of parent-private coparenting. It also found that child’s experience of separation with mother during the last year and mother’s employment were two key determinants of coparenting behavior in Chinese families. Findings suggest that co-residing grandparents, particularly grandmothers, may function as a kind of supplementary care resource in response to the lack of maternal childcare resulted from migration and labor force participation.

Abstract:Grandparental care has become an involuntary choice in life for many families, mainly due to parents' unavailability to provide care and the lack of public or affordable private childcare. This phenomenon has raised concerns regarding the effects of grandparental care along the dimensions of child development. This study aims to test the association between grandparental care and child development in three dimensions: subjective wellbeing, behavioural traits and study performance. It used data from the 2018 China Family Panel Studies survey. First, the study outlines the data and the applied method with defined variables, on the basis of which an overview on the current stage of grandparental care is presented. It then examines the association of the impact of grandparental care in different dimensions using the general linear model, along with the other influencing factors. Finally, a cross-age group comparison is employed. The results of the study illustrate the difficulty of examining an overall picture of grandparental childcare, with its negative or positive associations. However, when evaluated using the features of different age groups of children's development, significant associations between grandparental care and child development are mainly found in the 6-11 age group, but the significant associations weaken or disappear in the 12-16 age group. Attachment theory and peer group theory are used to explain the difference between the two age groups.
Bidirectional relationship between parental psychological control and adolescent maladjustment

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: This study explores the longitudinal and bidirectional relations between paternal/maternal psychological control and adolescent maladjustment (i.e., internalizing symptoms, aggression, and association with deviant peers).METHODS: This longitudinal investigation was conducted at two time points over a one-year interval with participants comprising 543 Chinese adolescents aged 10 to 13 (mean age at Time 1 = 11.29; 51.93% girls). The performed measurements encompassed paternal/maternal psychological control, adolescent internalizing symptoms, aggression, association with deviant peers, and demographic information.RESULTS: The findings of a cross-lagged model analysis revealed that paternal psychological control was longitudinally and positively related to adolescent internalizing symptoms and aggression. Maternal psychological control was not significantly related to any domain of adolescent maladjustment. In turn, adolescent association with deviant peers was longitudinally and positively associated with both parents' psychological control.CONCLUSIONS: Parental psychological control was bidirectionally associated with adolescent maladjustment in general, and paternal psychological control played a crucial role on adolescent maladjustment in the Chinese cultural context. The study's findings supported the reciprocal model of parent-child interaction, and extended it by highlighting the apprehension of the characteristics of parental impact from a cultural perspective. The study results add to the current scholarly understanding of parental psychological control in the non-western cultural context.

Multiple attachment relationships and the impacts on children’s socio-emotional development under the background of grandmother co-parenting

Abstract:In China, grandparent caring is a very common phenomenon. The quality of the mother-child and grandmother- child attachment relationships has a great impact on the children’s socio-emotional development. Up to now, however, the concurrent relation between children’s socio-emotional competence and the quality of their attachment to the mothers and grandmothers has not been explored. This study separately assessed the quality of children’s attachment to mothers and grandmothers, thus we could examine the quality and concordance of the mother-child and grandmother-child attachment, and could also explore their relative predictive power and joint effects on children’s socio-emotional competence. Participants were recruited from Beijing’s major communities and websites. 72 mothers, grandmothers, and their children (including 38 boys) participated in our project. All the children were the first fetus and in good health. They were taken care of by grandmothers when their mothers were at work. The time of the grandmother caregiving was not less than 10 hours per week. Using Attachment Q-Sort, 72 children’s ( M = 17.51 months) attachment security of mother-child and grandmother-child was examined in two successive sessions, and children’s socio-emotional development was simultaneously measured by Infant- toddler social and emotional assessment (containing four domains: Externalizing, Internalizing, Dysregulation and Competence). The results showed that: (1) In the background of grandmother co-parenting, most of the children could form secure attachment relationships with mothers and grandmothers. The security level of the mother-child attachment was higher than that of the grandmother-child attachment. (2) There was a moderate correlation between the mother-child attachment and the grandmother-child attachment. 36 percent of the children’s mother-child attachment security was dis-concordant with the grandmother-child attachment security. (3) Regression analysis showed that compared with the grandmother-child attachment security, the quality of the mother-child attachment had greater relative predictive power on children’s socio-emotional development, supporting the hierarchical organization hypothesis. (4) With two secure attachment relationships, the children’s scores of Externalizing domain and Internalizing domain were significantly lower than those of the other three groups of children. The quality of the mother-child and grandmother-child attachment relationships could not compensate for each other. The mother-child attachment and the grandmother-child attachment had an interactive effect on children’s Dysregulation domain. We firstly examined the effects of the mother-child and grandmother-child attachment for children’s outcomes in the multiple attachments framework, so this study has certain exploration and pioneering. Up to now, studies exploring the effect of the mother-child and father-child attachment on children’s development have found that a secure attachment with at least one parent was a key factor that offset risks for children’s development. But we found that the mother-child and grandmother-child attachment relationships of the present study could not buffer or compensate each other. This shows the effects of the father caregiving and the grandmother caregiving for the children’s development, and they are perhaps essentially different. Therefore the impact of mother and father on children’s development could not be replaced with the grandmother. The influence of the grandmother on the children’s development may be regarded as “icing on the cake”, while the father can play a buffer role or compensate for the children’s disadvantages.

Abstract:ObjectivesTo examine the relationship between grandparenting styles and grandchildren’s emotions and behaviors, while controlling for parenting styles, and to compare the effects of grandparenting styles and parenting styles on children’s behavioral problems in China.MethodsA sample of 765 children, with a mean age of 12.02 years (SD = 0.38), participated in this cross-sectional study in Jintan city, Jiangsu province, China. All participants completed the self-report measures of emotions and behaviors, grandparenting styles, and sociodemographic variables.ResultsResults showed that the well-recognized parenting styles (Care, Indifference, Overprotection, and Autonomy), when implemented by grandparents (grandparenting styles) and parents (parenting styles), had different patterns of effects on children’s emotional and behavioral problems. Grandparenting styles, especially grandparental Care and Overprotection, were positively related to emotional and behavioral problems, while parental Care was negatively related to children’s externalizing behaviors.ConclusionsThese results highlight the importance of grandparenting styles in grandchildren’s development. Practitioners working with grandparents and grandchildren need to recognize the complexity of grandparent-grandchild relationships and implement suitable interventions to meet the family needs.

Abstract:Background: Although research has demonstrated that parental psychological control is associated with the subjective well-being of adolescents, the lack of longitudinal studies that investigate whether or not bidirectional associations exist between the two and their potential mediating mechanisms has continued to date. In addition, previous studies have not rigorously distinguished between- and within-person effects. Thus, this study investigated longitudinal bidirectional associations between parental psychological control and the subjective well-being of adolescents. The study further examined the mediating role of emotion regulation ability. Methods: A total of 1365 Chinese adolescents (boys: 53.2 %; Mage = 14.68 years, SD = 1.56) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study with annual assessments. Random intercept cross-lagged panel models were utilized to separate between- and within-person variation. Results: After controlling for between-person variance, the results revealed that adolescents with low levels of subjective well-being reported high levels of parental psychological control after one year. Emotion regulation ability played a bidirectional mediating role in the relationship between psychological control and subjective well-being. That is, psychological control and subjective well-being mutually influenced each other through emotion regulation ability. Limitations: Assessments of the key study variables were provided by adolescents. Moreover, the study considered a combination of the mothers' and fathers' use of psychological control without differentiating between paternal and maternal psychological control. Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of interventions that target emotion regulation ability, which contributes to breaking the negative cycle between controlling parenting and the well-being of adolescents.
Children with low effortful control benefit in high-quality home learning environment: Evidence from China.

Abstract:The present study examined whether the home learning environment was longitudinally associated with children's language and cognitive development, and whether child effortful control moderated this association during the preschool years. Three hundred twenty-six Chinese parent–child dyads (at baseline, M age = 63.36 months, SD = 9.87) were included in this 10-month follow-up study. Data were acquired from multiple sources, comprising paternal reports, maternal reports, and standardized tasks. Results revealed that the home learning environment positively predicted preschool-aged children's language and cognitive development. Interestingly, this association was significant among children with lower effortful control but not with higher effortful control. The findings supported the differential susceptibility model by showing that children with low effortful control benefited more from early experience when parents provided sufficient language and cognitive stimulation at home. These suggest that providing a high-quality home learning environment may be a feasible target for interventions aimed at improving the development of children with low effortful control. Coparenting and Parental Involvement During School Transition Among Chinese Mothers and Fathers: Children's School Liking as a Moderator

Abstract:Parental involvement is a vital social resource that helps children to deal with different challenges in their learning and development in the transition period and may be a strong determinant of children's outcomes. While the role of fathers has been increasingly recognized, there has been a lack of studies examining the predictive role of mother and fathers' coparenting to parental involvement and child readiness outcomes. The purpose of this study is to examine the longitudinal association between coparenting behavior and parental involvement for parents with children in the transition to primary school in a Chinese context, and test whether children's school liking moderated these associations. Using stratified random sampling, 324 children (M age=70.57months, female=51%) and their parents from 10 kindergartens in Hong Kong participated in the study. Both mothers and fathers provided information about their spouse's coparenting behavior at Time 1 (the final year of kindergarten), and their parental involvement at home and school at Time 1 and 2 (the first year of primary school). Children's school liking was assessed by puppet interview at Time 1. Results indicated that maternal cooperation was positively associated with paternal involvement at home and in school, and paternal cooperation was positively associated with maternal involvement at home. Children's school liking moderated the longitudinal associations between coparenting behavior (Time 1) and parental involvement (Time 2). Specifically, mothers of children with high levels of school liking were involved more in school when they perceived more cooperation from the spouse. Fathers of children with low levels of school liking were less involved in school when they perceived more cooperation, while involved more at home and in school when they perceived more triangulation from the spouse. Additionally, fathers perceiving more triangulation decreased their home involvement when the child reported high levels of school liking. Findings of this study revealed that coparenting, children's school liking, and parental gender might be important to understanding parental involvement during school transition.
Bidirectional Relationship between Positive Parenting Behavior and Children’s Self-Regulation: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study

Abstract:In this study, we used a cross-lagged design to explore the relationship between children’s self-regulation and positive parenting behaviors. Children aged 3 years (N = 84) were tested individually three times a year for their hot and cool self-regulation, while their parents’ positive parenting behaviors (warmth, structure, and autonomy support) were collected through questionnaires. In the structural equation panel model, bidirectional relations between children’s inhibitory control and parental positive parenting were found. Children’s inhibitory control and positive parenting predicted changes in each other for the first six months. Such a reciprocal relationship also existed between parental autonomy support and children’s inhibitory control. There was a cross-lagged effect between parental warmth and children’ inhibitory control rather than a simultaneous relation. Children’s inhibitory control positively predicted parental structural behaviors rather than vice versa. Children’s delayed waiting and positive parenting (autonomy support) were only positively correlated, rather than having a lagging effect. All the relationships faded over time.

Abstract:School adjustment of left-behind children (LBC) is a significant public health issue that may affect their well-being and mental health. In China, most left-behind children have a family structure in which the father goes out to work and the mother stays at home to take care of the children. As the sole caregiver in the family, a mother who shows support or destruction to the father’s parenting goals or behaviors in the process of raising children may affect the LBC’s school adjustment. However, the relationship between mothers’ co-parenting and LBC’s school adjustment and its mechanisms are unclear. This study aimed to explore the longitudinal influence of mothers’ co-parenting on school adjustment of father-absent LBC, and the mediating roles of paternal and maternal attachment. 284 father-absent LBC (177 boys and 107 girls) aged 8–11 (Mage = 8.43, SDage = 0.73) from Anhui Province completed questionnaires about mothers’ co-parenting, paternal and maternal attachment, and children’s school adjustment at two time. The results showed that (1) mothers’ positive co-parenting positively predicted LBC’s social competence, and mothers’ negative co-parenting positively predicted LBC’s antisocial behaviors; (2) Maternal attachment mediated the relationship between mothers’ co-parenting and LBC’s social competence, while paternal attachment mediated the association between mothers’ positive co-parenting and LBC’s antisocial behaviors. This study reveals the effect of mothers’ co-parenting on the school adjustment of father-absent LBC, and the unique mediating role of paternal and maternal attachment. Moreover, this research suggested that encouraging mothers to exhibit more positive co-parenting behaviors, reducing conflict and disparaging fathers, may be an effective way to promote LBC’s school adjustment.
