Abstract:Improving the sensitivity of the fluorescence method is crucial in biosensor fields. In this study, an ultrasensitive and excellent selectivity method was developed for the detection of trace Cu2+ ions using 3-mercaptopropionic acid capped CdSSe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots (MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs) as a fluorescent probe. Through energy band engineering to optimize the interior inorganic structure and passivate the surface defects, the photoluminescence quantum yield of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs in aqueous solution had as high as 70 %. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) analysis revealed the prepared CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs were cubic zinc blende structure with average diameter 7.2 nm. Further, the fluorescence of the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs was significantly quenched by the Cu2+ with fast response time through an efficient photo-induced electron transfer (PET) progress. By optimizing the thickness of CdS shell, the MPA-CdSSe/CdS/ZnS QDs probe with appropriate CdS shell thickness exhibited excellent linear linearity and sensitivity for the detection of Cu2+ ions with limit of detection as low as 0.05 nM. Additionally, ions interference experiments demonstrated the good selectivity of the probe towards Cu2+. Furthermore, this sensing system could also be applied to the measurement of Cu2+ ions in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries. This work provided new insights to design and synthesize high-performance QDs-based fluorescence probes with controllable exciton emission behavior for their applications in biosensor and biological fields.
Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots for Highly Selective and Sensitive Fluorescent Detection of Fe(III) Ions and L-cysteine

Abstract:Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,S-CQDs) with a high quantum yield (69%) and excellent photoluminescent properties were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using citric acid and cysteine as precursors. The cytotoxicity of N,S-CQDs was evaluated through the MTT assays using HepG2 cells as the target. The cell viability is still >95% after a 24 h incubation with particles in a concentration of up to 300 μg·mL−1, thereby indicating low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility of N,S-CQDs. The emission spectra of the N,S-CQDs are nearly independent of the excitation wavelengths in the range from 280 to 380 nm and have the strongest fluorescence emission centered at 415 nm. Co-doping with N and S promotes the electron-transfer rate and coordination interaction between N,S-CQDs and Fe(III) ions which acts as a quencher of fluorescence. Fluorescence can be recovered, however, by addition of L-Cys. Hence, the N,S-CQDs act as a highly sensitive and selective “turn-off-on” probe for the determination of Fe(III) or Cys. The limits of detection are 14 nM for Fe(III) and 0.54 μM for Cys. The interferences by 17 common metal ions and heavy metal ions, 12 other quenchers and 16 amino acids were investigated and found to be tolerable. The probe was successfully applied for cellular imaging of Fe(III) in HepG2 cells by using fluorescence microscopy.
Facile Synthesis of N-rich Carbon Quantum Dots from Porphyrins As Efficient Probes for Bioimaging and Biosensing in Living Cells.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:In this study, we successfully synthesized Cu-Ag alloy nanoclusters (CuAgCs) by introducing Ag, which exhibited superior stability compared to Cu nanoclusters (CuNCs). Additionally, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with an impressive quantum yield of 26% were prepared. By combining short-wavelength CQDs with long-wavelength CuAgNCs, ratiometric fluorescent probes capable of dual emission with peaks at 468 nm (F 468 ) and 560 nm (F 560 ) were developed for detecting L-cysteine (L-Cys). The detection mechanism involves the aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect of CuAgNCs in the presence of L-Cys, resulting in an increase in F 560 while F 468 remains unchanged. The fluorescence intensity ratio F 560 /F 468 exhibits a linear relationship with L-Cys concentration in the range of 0–60 μM, with a low detection limit of 0.367 μM. Notably, the practical applicability of the fluorescent probe was validated through successful detection in real samples, achieving a high recovery rate of 98.7%-109%. These results demonstrate the promising potential of the developed fluorescent probe for practical applications.

Abstract:Copper is essential for human body because it plays an important role in various physiological processes, so the sensitive detection of Cu 2+ ions is a vital topic in human health and environment safe. In this work, green-emitting carbon quantum dots (CQDs) facilely synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method were used as fluorescent probes for Cu 2+ detection. The CQDs showed a rapid and sensitive response to Cu 2+ with a color change and brightened fluorescence. The fluorescence enhancement of CQDs reaches 4.51-fold by 5 μM Cu 2+ as a typical "turn-on" strategy. A good linear relation of the fluorescence enhancement by Cu 2+ appears in a range of 0.1–1 μM Cu 2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.46 nM. Then, the enhanced fluorescence of Cu 2+ -CQDs could be rapidly decreased by EDTA via a quenching response ("turn-off"). A linear range of the fluorescence decrease and EDTA concentration is 1–10 μM with a LOD of 0.19 μM. The interference experiments for the detections of both Cu 2+ and EDTA show a high selectivity. The practical detections of both Cu 2+ and EDTA in actual water samples and spiked samples demonstrated good reproducibility and effective recovery rates. In addition, the Cu 2+ -CQDs even had a slow "turn-off" response to histidine over 20 natural amino acids. Overall, the CQDs-based "turn-on-off" detection methods with high sensitivity and selectivity in this work can be considered a promising new choice for the fluorescence analysis of Cu 2+ and EDTA.

Abstract:Manganese-doped ZnS quantum dots (ZnS:Mn(II) QDs) were synthesized and modified with L-cysteine (L-Cys) and 6-mercaptonicotinic acid (MNA). This prevents the aggregation of the QDs and makes them available for the interaction with Cu(II) ions via Cu(II)-S interaction. As a result, the fluorescence of the QDs is quenched by Cu(II) due to an electron transfer mechanism. The QDs display two emission peaks under 325 nm excitation, one (being red) peaking at 593 nm, the other (blue) at 412 nm. The red fluorescence is strongly quenched, while the blue fluorescence is not affected. An easily distinguishable color change from orange red to purple can be observed in fluorescence as the concentration of Cu(II) is increased. The probe is selective over commonly encountered other ions. Preparation and application of solvent-modulated self-doped N-S multicolour fluorescence carbon quantum dots

Abstract:In this paper, two types of carbon quantum dot (CQDs) were prepared using biocompatible l-methionine as the carbon source and urea as the nitrogen source and a one-step hydrothermal treatment. By changing the reaction solvents (deionized (DI) water and dimethylformamide (DMF)), the maximum emission of the resulting CQDs shifted from blue to red light. Specifically, the emission wavelength of the CQDs moved from 433 nm to 625 nm following embedding of a new functional group (-CONH-) on the surface of the CQDs. Photoluminescence quantum yields of the CQDs with blue and red emission reached 64% and 61%, respectively. The R-CQDs were used to detect metal ions and a linear relationship was demonstrated between ln(F/F0 ) and Fe3+ concentration in the range 0-0.5 mmol/L with a detection limit of 0.067 μM. Therefore these R-CQDs have great potential as fluorescent probes for Fe3+ detection. We expect that the excellent water-soluble, biocompatible and optical properties of the CQDs developed in this work mean that they will be widely used to detect biological cells.

Abstract:Fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were synthesized by a one-step pyrolysis strategy using casein as carbon, nitrogen and sulfur sources, and characterized by UVevis spectrum, fluorescent spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FT-IR, etc. The synthesized NSCDs displayed a blue emission under ultraviolet illumination with a quantum yield of 31.8%, and a good aqueous solubility, photostability and biocompatibility. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of NSCDs could be selectively quenched by Hg2+, so NSCDs was used as an effective probe for the detection of Hg2+. The linear range and the limit of detection (LOD) of the fluorescent sensor based on NSCDs for the detection of Hg2+ were 0.01-0.25 mu M and 6.5 mu M, respectively. Spiked water samples were detected by the sensor with the recovery of 95.4-106.3% and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.6-8.6%. It was also observed that the quenched NSCDs-Hg2+ system could be restored by the addition of biothiols such as L-cysteine (Lcy), homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH), thus NSCDs-Hg2+ system was employed as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of biothiols. The linear range and LOD of the NSCDs-Hg2+ system were 1-10 mM and 23.6 nM for Lcy, 0.2-2.5 mM and 12.3 nM for Hcy, and 0.1-2.0 mM and 16.8 nM for GSH, respectively. The NSCDs-Hg2+ system was applied for the detection of biothiols in serum samples with satisfied results. In addition, the study in vitro imaging HeLa cells revealed that the synthesized NSCDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in cellular imaging without noticeable cytotoxicity. Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dot-Anchored Hydrogels for Visual Recognition of Dual Metal Ions through Reversible Fluorescence Response

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are novel and promising fluorescent materials that are extensively investigated in sensing, drug delivery, and bioimaging. However, they are easy to agglomerate and difficult to recover, which reduced their sensitivity and reusability. In this work, we innovatively prepared a “smart switch sensor” hydrogel (SWSH) by incorporating nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) into a polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel network with functionalities of easy handling, recyclability, and simultaneously recognizing dual metal ions. The prepared SWSH showed reversible fluorescence “off/on” response with Cu2+/Ag+ and l-cysteine (l-cys), and the limit of detection values of the SWSH for these metal ions were 0.813 × 10–3, 0.468 × 10–3, and 0.437 × 10–3 mM, respectively. The N-CQDs in the SWSH would form a N-CQD–metal complex with Cu2+ or Ag+ ions, in which the electrons on the surface of CQDs were easily transferred to the metal, resulting in fluorescence quenching (off). However, only the fluorescence of the N-CQD–Cu2+ complex could be recovered (on) by the addition of l-cys as it could form a more stable Cu2+–S bond with Cu2+, thus achieving recognition of Cu2+ and Ag+ through fluorescence change observed with naked eyes. Therefore, the SWSH avoided the agglomeration of CQDs and facilitated their fluorescence recovery and reusability, which exhibited great potential applications in identifying metal ions.

Abstract:Exciton-recombination probability is an important factor that affects the fluorescence efficiency of semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs), especially those that exhibit near-infrared (NIR) luminescence, making their fluorescence performances modulated via the modification of some receptors. Herein, we present a novel and facile method for the consumption of trace l-cysteine (l-Cys) under physiological conditions by using atomically dispersed gold modified cadmium sulfide QDs (Au-s/CdS QDs) with remarkably enhanced NIR fluorescence efficiency compared to free CdS QDs. The enhancement is ascribed to electron transfer from CdS QDs to single-atom Au, increasing the recombination probability of conduction band electrons with valence band holes of CdS QDs and decreasing the fluorescence lifetime. Nevertheless, the electronic state density of single-atom Au modified on CdS QDs is increased upon its coordination with l-Cys as an electron donor, which restricts the electron transfer to decrease the exciton-recombination probability and increase the fluorescence lifetime again, partially lowering the NIR fluorescence efficiency. The efficiency change makes Au-s/CdS QDs promising candidates for effective consumption of trace l-Cys with good anti-interference against other various biologically relevant species and extremely high sensitivity, for the limit of detection (LOD) down to 8.10 nM, which makes Au-s/CdS QDs successfully applied in practical applicability of consuming trace l-Cys from real water samples. Our results broaden the application potential of NIR luminescent QDs in theoretical guidance and technical support and provide a novel approach to consume trace l-Cys through the modulation of their NIR fluorescence efficiency, which would be useful for diagnosing and treating a series of l-Cys-induced diseases.
Ultrasensitive Cu2+ sensing by near-infrared-emitting CdSeTe alloyed quantum dots.

Abstract:The near-infrared (NIR)-emitting CdSeTe alloyed quantum dots (AQdots) that capped with l-cysteine were applied for ultrasensitive Cu2+ sensing. The sensing approach was based on the fluorescence of the AQdots selectively quenched in the presence of Cu2+. Experimental results showed a low interference response towards other metal ions. The possible quenching mechanism was discussed on the basis of the binding between l-cysteine and the metal ions. In addition, biomolecules have low effect on the fluorescence due to the minimized interferences in NIR region. The response of the NIR optical sensor was linearly proportional to the concentration of Cu2+ ranging from 2×10−8 to 2×10−6molL−1. Furthermore, it has been successfully applied to the detection of Cu2+ in vegetable samples.
Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots as a fluorescent probe to detect copper ions, glutathione, and intracellular pH

Abstract:A facile one-step hydrothermal method was developed to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) by utilizing hexamethylenetetramine as the carbon and nitrogen source. The quantum yield (QY) of 21.7% was under the excitation wavelength of 420 nm with maximum emission at 508 nm. This N-CQD fluorescent probe has been successfully applied to selectively determine the concentration of copper ion (Cu2+) with a linear range of 0.1–40 μM and a limit of detection of 0.09 μM. In addition, the fluorescence of N-CQDs could be effectively quenched by Cu2+ and specifically recovered by glutathione (GSH), which render the N-CQDs as a premium fluorescent probe for GSH detection. This fluorescence “turn-on” protocol was applied to determine GSH with a linear range of 0.1–30 μM as well as a detection limit of 0.05 μM. For pH detection, there is good linearity in the pH range of 2.87–7.24. Furthermore, N-CQD is a promising and convenient fluorescent pH, Cu2+, and glutathione sensor with brilliant biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity in environmental monitoring and bioimaging applications.
Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots from Poly(ethyleneimine) for Optical Dual-Mode Determination of Cu 2+ and l -Cysteine and Their Logic Gate Operation

Abstract:In this work, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots from poly(ethyleneimine) (PQDs) were synthesized by a low-cost and facile one-step hydrothermal method without other reagents. A quantum yield (QY) of up to 23.2% with maximum emission at 460 nm under an excitation wavelength of 340 nm was ascribed to the high nitrogen doping (20.59%). The PQDs selectively form a blue complex with Cu2+ accompanied by strong quenching of the fluorescence emission. Meanwhile, the PQD-Cu2+ complex exhibited selective fluorescence recovery and color disappearance on exposure to l-cysteine (Cys). The electron transfer from amino or oxygen groups on the PQDs to Cu2+ leads to fluorescence quenching, and a chromogenic reaction of the cuprammonium complex results in a color change. The strong affinity between Cys and Cu2+ causes the detachment of Cu2+ from the surface of PQDs, so the color of the solution disappears and the fluorescence of PQDs recovers. Under the optimized condition, the proposed sensor was applied to detect Cu2+ in the linear range of 0–280 μM. A detection limit of 4.75 μM is achieved using fluorescence spectroscopy and 4.74 μM by monitoring the absorbance variation at 272 nm. For Cys detection, the linear range of 0–800 μM with detection limits of 28.11 μM (fluorescence determination) and 19.74 μM (peak shift determination at 272 nm) was obtained. Meanwhile, the PQD-Cu2+ system exhibits distinguishable responses to other biothiols such as l-glutathione (GSH) and dl-homocysteine (Hcy). Based on the multimode signals, an "AND" logic gate was constructed successfully. Interestingly, besides Cu2+, Fe3+ can also quench the fluorescence of PQDs and the PQD-Fe3+ system exhibits superior selectivity for Cys detection. Abstract:In this paper, a novel nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (NS-CQDs) were successfully prepared by a dehydration exothermic carbonization method. The NS-CQDs exhibited uniform size distribution, splendid photostability, and bright fluorescence emission with a fluorescence quantum yield of 24.1 %. It was found that Cu 2+ could quench the fluorescence at 467 nm based on the static quenching effect when Cu 2+ was added to the NS-CQDs. At this time, the fluorescence sensor changed from the "ON" state to the "OFF" state. When glutathione (GSH) was further introduced into the NS-CQDs/Cu 2+ system, the fluorescence intensity of NS-CQDs was amazingly restored through the coordination reaction between GSH and Cu 2+ . The fluorescence sensor changed from the "OFF" state to the "ON" state. Therefore, NS-CQDs as an "ON-OFF-ON" fluorescence sensor was designed for sequential detection of Cu 2+ and GSH. Furthermore, this study successfully demonstrated the sensor's ability to selectively detect Cu 2+ and GSH within a wide concentration range. Specifically, the detection range for Cu 2+ was 0.1 μM−200.0 μM with a detection limit of 0.07 μM, while the range for GSH was 0.6 μM−180.0 μM with a detection limit of 0.1 μM. Abstract:Primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix and primary carcinomata within hernial sacs are both uncommon clinical problems. A previously undescribed presentation of primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix in a right sided sliding inguinal hernia is presented and discussed. It is important to follow up patients with carcinoma of the appendix in order to exclude other colonic lesions. The St Vincent's Hospital (Melbourne) experience in this condition is limited but parallels that of major series elsewhere.

Abstract:A one-step hydrothermal method using glucosamine as the carbon and nitrogen source, mixed with dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (K2HPO4) in an aqueous solution, is used to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs). Compared with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) synthesized using glucose in a similar manner, N-CQDs show a much clearer green fluorescence at the long wavelength of ultraviolet light (365 nm) and a more stable and improved electrochemiluminescence (ECL) activity. A paper-based ECL sensor is developed with N-CQDs, based on the easy-scalable screen printing technology, and K2S2O8 is used as a co-reactant to detect Cu2+ ions. The ECL strength of the N-CQDs-K2S2O8 system increases with increasing Cu2+ ions concentration. The sensor shows overall excellent ECL stability, reproducibility, and selectivity, with a wide linear relationship ranging from 0.01 to 1000 μM in the detection of Cu2+ ions. This one-step synthesis of N-CQDs provides a feasible method for preparing portable paper-based ECL sensors for future applications.

Low Cu(II) Concentration Detection Based on Fluorescent Detector Made from Citric Acid and Urea

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQD) are an advanced fluorescent material, which has attracted more and more attention in theoretical research and practical applications. To obtain stable CQDs with high fluorescence characteristics for detecting trace metal ions in water, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) based fluorescent sensors were synthesized by the hydrothermal method, using citric acid and urea as source. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that the synthesized N-CQDs maintained a narrow particle size distribution bellow 10 nm, and its average size was 3.07 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicated that abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups existed on N-CQDs surface, which helped N-CQDs highly disperse in water. In addition, UV–vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence demonstrated that the N-CQDs obtained a 10.27% of quantum yield (QY) with relatively high and stable fluorescence performance. As a fluorescent sensor, the N-CQDs showed a fluorescence "ON–OFF" mechanism during the Cu 2+ detection, which was induced from the electrons transition in surface functional groups. The final N-CQDs exhibited a wide linear relationship between fluorescence response and concentration of Cu 2+ in range of 0.3–0.7 μM with a detection limit of 0.071 μM. Furthermore, the detection of Cu 2+ in the simulating surface water (by adding interfering metal ions in purified water) and the tap water (from municipal water in Beijing) were used to verify N-CQDs practical application.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are widely used in the field of analysis and detection due to their excellent optical properties. At present, many studies have focused on the preparation of multi-color fluorescent quantum dots by simple methods. Inspired by this, carbon quantum dots with green (G-CQDs) and yellow fluorescence (YN-CQDs) emission were prepared by hydrothermal method using PTCDA and urea as precursors. After characterizing their morphology, structure, and optical properties, fluorescent probes for different purposes were constructed according to their different fluorescence characteristics. Since green G-CQDs are sensitive to acidic environments, pH detection kits are developed. In addition, G-CQDs can also efficiently detect Asp. YN-CQDs are used to detect metal ions and can specifically detect Fe 3+ . Both of them were applied to the detection of actual samples, showing high efficiency and reliability. It provides a new idea for the multi-purpose detection of carbon quantum dot fluorescent probes.

Abstract:Chiral biomas carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted great interest because of their low cytotoxicity, low cost and facile synthesis, which are special useful for sensing. In this paper, CQDs derived from cane molasses were endowed chirality by a simple hydrothermal method with l -cysteine and d -cysteine as chiral sources respectively. The obtained chiral CQDs have significantly enhanced fluorescence properties, whose fluorescence intensity and fluorescence quantum yield are about 3 times of CQDs without chirality. A fluorescent sensor and a circular dichroic (CD) sensor were built and compared based on the fluorescence property and chirality of the obtained chiral CQDs, respectively, the former exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for Ag + , while the latter exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for Ag + , Hg 2+ and Cu 2+ simultaneously. The detection mechanism of the CD sensor for metal ions was proposed based on the static quenching mechanism of the fluorescent sensor. The detection of real samples of tap water verified the reliability of the developed sensors. The present work expands the application field of CQDs.

Abstract:In the last two decades, fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted intense interest as a new fluorescent nanomaterial with unique properties. This material offers significant advantages compared with conventional dyes and inorganic QD systems, and is used extensively in many different fields, especially in bioimaging and sensor applications. Despite all the positive values they offer, the production of CQD systems with excitation wavelength-dependent nature and high quantum yield (QY) is still a scientific challenge. In this study, we proposed the fabrication of CQD through a facile and easy-to-tune hydrothermal method using cheap and biocompatible precursors such as urea and lactic acid. The effect of experimental parameters including synthesis time, temperature, and mass ratio of the precursors, were determined to obtain the highest QY (48%). The as-prepared nitrogen-doped (N-doped) CQDs exhibited robust stability in the dark and in a wide range of pH values with excitation wavelength-dependent properties. Additionally, CQDs showed remarkable sensitivity and selectivity in the sensing of Fe3+ in blood plasma with a linear correlation in the range of 0–1000 μM, indicating the high potential of CQDs in practical applications. Lastly, cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity tests demonstrated the low toxicity and high biocompatibility of proposed CQDs. Considering the facile and efficient synthetic method, easy-to-tune optical properties, excitation-dependent nature, high fluorescence activity, and low cytotoxicity, we strongly anticipate that N-doped CQDs could provide unique advantages in various biomedical applications including diagnosis, bioimaging, and biosensors.
