Abstract:This research addresses the increasing demand for advanced navigation systems capable of operating within confined surroundings. A significant challenge in this field is developing an efficient planning framework that can generalize across various types of collision avoidance missions. Utilizing numerical optimal control techniques, this study proposes a unified optimization-based planning framework to meet these demands. We focus on handling two collision avoidance problems, i.e., the object not colliding with obstacles and not colliding with boundaries of the constrained region. The object or obstacle is denoted as a union of convex polytopes and ellipsoids, and the constrained region is denoted as an intersection of such convex sets. Using these representations, collision avoidance can be approached by formulating explicit constraints that separate two convex sets, or ensure that a convex set is contained in another convex set, referred to as separating constraints and containing constraints, respectively. We propose to use the hyperplane separation theorem to formulate differentiable separating constraints, and utilize the S-procedure and geometrical methods to formulate smooth containing constraints. We state that compared to the state of the art, the proposed formulations allow a considerable reduction in nonlinear program size and geometry-based initialization in auxiliary variables used to formulate collision avoidance constraints. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed unified planning framework is evaluated in two contexts, autonomous parking in tractor-trailer vehicles and overtaking on curved lanes. The results in both cases exhibit an improved computational performance compared to existing methods.
Automatic Parameter Adaptation for Quadrotor Trajectory Planning

Abstract:Online trajectory planners enable quadrotors to safely and smoothly navigate in unknown cluttered environments. However, tuning parameters is challenging since modern planners have become too complex to mathematically model and predict their interaction with unstructured environments. This work takes humans out of the loop by proposing a planner parameter adaptation framework that formulates objectives into two complementary categories and optimizes them asynchronously. Objectives evaluated with and without trajectory execution are optimized using Bayesian Optimization (BayesOpt) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), respectively. By combining two kinds of objectives, the total convergence rate of the black-box optimization is accelerated while the dimension of optimized parameters can be increased. Benchmark comparisons demonstrate its superior performance over other strategies. Tests with changing obstacle densities validate its real-time environment adaption, which is difficult for prior manual tuning. Real-world flights with different drone platforms, environments, and planners show the proposed framework's scalability and effectiveness.

Abstract:This letter is focused on the time-optimal Multi-Vehicle Trajectory Planning (MVTP) problem for multiple car-like robots when they travel in a tiny indoor scenario occupied by static obstacles. Herein, the complexity of the concerned MVTP task includes i) the non-convexity and narrowness of the environment, ii) the nonholonomy and nonlinearity of the vehicle kinematics, iii) the pursuit for a time-optimal solution, and iv) the absence of predefined homotopic routes for the vehicles. The aforementioned factors, when mixed together, are beyond the capability of the prevalent coupled or decoupled MVTP methods. This work proposes an adaptive-scaling constrained optimization (ASCO) approach, aiming to find the optimum of the nominally intractable MVTP problem in a decoupled way. Concretely, an iterative computation framework is built, wherein each intermediate subproblem contains only risky collision avoidance constraints within a certain range, thus being tractable in the scale. During the iteration, the constraint activation scale can change adaptively, thereby enabling to promote the convergence rate, to recover from an intermediate failure, and to get rid of a poor initial guess. ASCO is compared versus the state-of-the-art MVTP methods and is validated in real experiments conducted by a team of three car-like robots.
An Incremental Strategy for Tractor-Trailer Vehicle Global Trajectory Optimization in the Presence of Obstacles.

Abstract:Trajectory planning is a critical aspect in driving an autonomous tractor-trailer vehicle. This study considers trajectory planning as a minimal-time optimal control problem that incorporates the kinematics, mechanical/physical constraints, environmental requirements and an optimization criterion. This formulation benefits in the ability to directly handle time-dependent requirements. A gradient-based numerical solver is adopted to tackle the formulated optimal control problem. An incremental strategy is proposed to enhance the global optimization ability of that solver and to help find satisfactory solutions in challenging cases. Specifically, when an optimal solution is found, we doubt whether that is merely a local optimum and then still expect to make evolution; when optimal solutions are not easy to obtain, we expect at least one feasible solution first, which is taken as a preliminary guess to assist the subsequent optimization process. Both procedures proceed alternatively until no progress can be made any further. Some intricate simulation results are well beyond manual operation ability. Moreover, our overall proposal, as a unified and open framework, can deal with a wide variety of user-specified requirements.

Abstract:Autonomous driving with active obstacle avoidance in dynamic urban environment has attracted significant attention to improve road safety and traffic efficiency. In this paper, an online optimization-based trajectory planning method for autonomous overtaking is developed to prevent collision and realize safe efficient driving. Unlike traditional methods which solve the overtaking problem with segmented reference path in multi-stages with integer variables, this paper proposes a novel dual-variable trajectory planning framework to get the optimal trajectory for active collision avoidance. First, the nonlinear non-differentiable collision-free constraint between vehicles is reformulated using dual problem optimization. Then, the optimal trajectory for longitudinal and lateral movement is obtained jointly in a receding horizon optimization framework based on the optimized dual variable considering the safety and dynamic performance. The key novelty lies in the reformulation of the nonlinear optimal trajectory planning problem and the formulated whole optimization framework can be solved using efficient open-source solvers for online computation. Simulation studies in different dynamic cases are provided to show the efficiency and robustness for safe driving. The method reaches safe overtaking performance with much less calculation time. Real-world experiment with a static obstacle demonstrates its capability for the safe efficient trajectory planning and online implementation in autonomous driving.

Miniaturized RF MEMS switch cells for crossbar switch matrices

Abstract:This paper proposes miniaturized RF MEMS switch cell units for wideband scalable switch matrices. Two switch cells named type 1 and type 2, each has four and three MEMS switches respectively, are presented. Both of the cells are miniaturized in physical dimensions. They are 340 µm × 340 µm. To authors' knowledge, these are the smallest cell units for RF MEMS switch matrices ever reported. RF performance of the proposed switch cell units are presented. Both of the designs exhibit excellent RF performance. The measured results demonstrated return loss (S11 and S44) better than 20 dB for both, while maintaining isolation (S41) better than 20 dB for state 1, across DC to 40 GHz bandwidth for both types. At state 2, 20 dB isolation is recorded across the bandwidth of interest. They also show better than 20 dB return loss (S11).

Abstract:Overtaking is one of the most challenging tasks in driving, and the current solutions to autonomous overtaking are limited to simple and static scenarios. In this paper, we present a method for behaviour and trajectory planning for safe autonomous overtaking. The proposed method optimizes the trajectory by simultaneously enforcing safety and minimizing intrusion onto the adjacent lane. Furthermore, the method allows the overtaking to be aborted, enabling the autonomous vehicle to merge back in the lane, if safety is compromised, because of e.g. traffic in opposing direction appearing during the maneuver execution. A finite state machine is used to select an appropriate maneuver at each time, and a combination of safe and reachable sets is used to iteratively generate intermediate reference targets based on the current maneuver. A nonlinear model predictive controller then plans dynamically feasible and collision-free trajectories to these intermediate reference targets. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the combination of intermediate reference generation and model predictive control is able to handle multiple behaviors, including following a lead vehicle, overtaking and aborting the overtake, within a single framework.

Abstract:The overtaking process for autonomous vehicles must prioritize both efficiency and safety, with safe distance being a crucial parameter. To address this, we propose an automatic overtaking path planning method based on minimal safe distance, ensuring both maneuvering efficiency and safety. This method combines the steady movement and comfort of the constant velocity offset model with the smoothness of the sine function model, creating a mixed-function model that is effective for planning lateral motion. For precise longitudinal motion planning, the overtaking process is divided into five stages, with each stage's velocity and travel time calculated. To enhance the control system, the model predictive control (MPC) algorithm is applied, establishing a robust trajectory tracking control system for overtaking. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed overtaking path planning method can generate smooth and continuous paths. Under the MPC framework, the autonomous vehicle efficiently and safely performs automatic overtaking maneuvers, showcasing the method's potential to improve the performance and reliability of autonomous driving systems.

Abstract:Autonomous intersection management has become a state-of-the-art control strategy customized for connected and autonomous vehicles. Combining the advantages of tile-based and conflict point-based approaches, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization method based on a developed intersection modeling approach. The first stage is a timing schedule optimization model, assigning vehicle arrival times at an intersection. Based on the output of the first stage, the second stage is a trajectory optimization model, which gives the eco-driving strategies. Moreover, a rolling optimization with a variable cycle length is adopted to run the method continuously. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the genetic algorithm-based method in terms of computation time, and can reduce vehicle delay and fuel consumption by 89.48% and 46.84%, respectively, under different traffic demands compared to the first-come-first-serve method. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed method under asymmetric traffic demand is discussed. Sensitivity analyses suggest that (1) a long cycle length benefits the proposed method within certain limits and (2) a proper deceleration within the intersection can balance traffic delay with fuel consumption. In addition, an additional model with a heuristic rule is compared with the original timing schedule optimization model. It is found that reducing binaries in the first stage can make a tradeoff between the quality of the solution and efficiency, which can be used in conjunction with long cycles.

An Overtaking Trajectory Planning Framework Based on Spatio-temporal Topology and Reachable Set Analysis Ensuring Time Efficiency

Abstract:Generating overtaking trajectories in high-speed scenarios presents significant challenges and is typically addressed through hierarchical planning methods. However, this method has two primary drawbacks. First, heuristic algorithms can only provide a single initial solution, which may lead to local optima and consequently diminish the quality of the solution. Second, the time efficiency of trajectory refinement based on numerical optimization is insufficient. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes an overtaking trajectory planning framework based on spatio-temporal topology and reachable set analysis (SROP), to improve trajectory quality and time efficiency. Specifically, this paper introduces topological classes to describe trajectories representing different overtaking behaviors, which support the spatio-temporal topological search method employed by the upper-layer planner to identify diverse initial paths. This approach helps prevent getting stuck in local optima, enhancing the overall solution quality by considering multiple initial solutions from distinct topologies. Moreover, the reachable set method is integrated into the lower-layer planner for parallel trajectory evaluation. This method enhances planning efficiency by decoupling vehicle model constraints from the optimization process, enabling parallel computation while ensuring control feasibility. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves the smoothness of generated trajectories by 66.8% compared to state-of-the-art methods, highlighting its effectiveness in enhancing trajectory quality. Additionally, this method reduces computation time by 62.9%, demonstrating its efficiency.

Abstract:Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) are nowadays used in various applications for security, inspection and delivery among others. To operate in dynamic and complex environments efficiently demands an optimal path planning where multiple factors should be taken into account. In this paper, the multi-objective path planning problem of USV is formulated aiming to minimize the traveled distance maximizing in parallel the trajectory smoothness and energy efficiency. To address this multi-objective path planning problem with contradicting terms, the popular Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is employed enhanced with the proposed Fuzzy Pareto framework. In particular, ACO is used to solve the problem by finding the Pareto solutions optimizing each single objective. Then these solutions are evaluated via the Mamdani fuzzy inference system to identify the optimal one. The ranking of the solutions is based on the defuzzification values. A case study is performed in a simulation area based on Saronic Gulf topology. The results showed that depending the needs of an operation and the conditions of the area of operations (number of obstacles, currents, and distance from the initial to the target point), each objective can impact the path quality differently.

Abstract:Providing safe, smooth, and efficient trajectories for autonomous vehicles has long been a question of great interest in the field of autopiloting. In dynamic and ever-changing urban environments, safe and efficient trajectory planning is fundamental to achieving autonomous driving. Nevertheless, the complexity of environments with multiple constraints poses challenges for trajectory planning. It is possible that behavior planners may not successfully obtain collision-free trajectories in complex urban environments. Herein, this paper introduces spatio–temporal joint optimization-based trajectory planning (SJOTP) with multi-constraints for complex urban environments. The behavior planner generates initial trajectory clusters based on the current state of the vehicle, and a topology-guided hybrid A* algorithm applied to an inflated map is utilized to address the risk of collisions between the initial trajectories and static obstacles. Taking into consideration obstacles, road surface adhesion coefficients, and vehicle dynamics constraints, multi-constraint multi-objective coordinated trajectory planning is conducted, using both differential-flatness vehicle models and point-mass vehicle models. Taking into consideration longitudinal and lateral coupling in trajectory optimization, a spatio–temporal joint optimization solver is used to obtain the optimal trajectory. The simulation verification was conducted on a multi-agent simulation platform. The results demonstrate that this methodology can obtain optimal trajectories safely and efficiently in complex urban environments.

Abstract:In this study, a novel type of swarm intelligence algorithm referred as the anas platyrhynchos optimizer is proposed by simulating the cluster action of the anas platyrhynchos. Starting from the core of swarm intelligence algorithm, on the premise of the use of few parameters and ease in implementation, the mathematical model and algorithm flow of the anas platyrhynchos optimizer are given, and the balance between global search and local development in the algorithm is ensured. The algorithm was applied to a benchmark function and a cooperative path planning solution for multi-UAVs as a means of testing the performance of the algorithm. The optimization results showed that the anas platyrhynchos optimizer is more superior in solving optimization problems compared with the mainstream intelligent algorithm. This study provides a new idea for solving more engineering problems.
Spatio-Temporal Trajectory Planning Using Search And Optimizing Method for Autonomous Driving

Abstract:In the field of autonomous driving trajectory planning, it’s virtual to ensure real-time planning while guaranteeing feasibility and robustness. Current widely adopted approaches include decoupling path planning and velocity planning based on optimization method, which can’t always yield optimal solutions, especially in complex dynamic scenarios. Furthermore, search-based and sampling-based solutions encounter limitations due to their low resolution and high computational costs. This paper presents a novel spatio-temporal trajectory planning approach that integrates both search-based planning and optimization-based planning method. This approach retains the advantages of search-based method, allowing for the identification of a global optimal solution through search. To address the challenge posed by the non-convex nature of the original solution space, we introduce a spatio-temporal semantic corridor structure, which constructs a convex feasible set for the problem. Trajectory optimization is then performed through numerical optimization methods, resulting in real-time and robust spatio-temporal trajectory planning. The proposed approach initiates by constructing a 3D spatio- temporal map that incorporates information such as dynamic obstacles. Improved A* algorithm is used to search for a preliminary spatio- temporal trajectory, serving as an initial approximation for the trajectory. Based on this initial approximation, a spatio-temporal corridor is constructed as locally convex feasible driving area, then a quintic monomial polynomial is employed to represent a trajectory, considering vehicle kinematics, continuity, and other constraints, this formulation transforms the problem into a general quadratic programming problem. Ultimately, the generated trajectories are rigorously tested through simulations in scenarios involving overtaking and side car cut-in. The results indicate that the generated trajectories are feasible, reasonable, and exhibit good real-time performance.

Abstract:The cooperative scheduling problem of connected and automated vehicles(CAVs) at the non-signalized intersection is investigated in this paper. The mathematical model of the intersection is formulated with the hierarchical layout. Based on this model, an analytical control algorithm based on Pon-tryagin's minimum principle (PMP) is proposed for each CAV to solve the problem of multi-objective optimization considering the multi-constraints of the vehicle. In particular, the priorities of the optimization objectives are in this order: 1)guaranteeing vehicle safety, 2)alleviating traffic congestion, and 3)improving performance of fuel consumption or ride comfort. Low computational cost of the proposed algorithm guarantees that the algorithm with consideration of vehicle constraints can obtain the optimal solution quickly and steadily. Simulation results of high-speed CAVs traveling in the intersection area verify that the proposed algorithm is capable of achieving cooperative scheduling of CAVs at the non-Signalized intersection.

Abstract:This paper investigates high‐level decision making for autonomous overtaking under two‐way roads subject to oncoming vehicles, one of the most challenging manoeuvres in driving. To accomplish overtaking tasks safely and quickly, a high‐level decision‐making framework is proposed by integrating model predictive control (MPC) and switching control approaches. The performance of the proposed MPC framework is demonstrated via simulations of four driving scenarios, which show that it is able to handle multiple behaviours, including following a leading vehicle, slowdown, stop and overtaking. The key motivation of this paper lies in the development of a high‐level decision‐making framework for autonomous overtaking maneuvers on two‐lane country roads with dynamic oncoming traffic. To generate an optimal and safe decision sequence for such scenario, an innovative high‐level decision‐making framework that combines model predictive control (MPC) and switching control methodologies is introduced. Specifically, the autonomous vehicle is abstracted and modelled as a switched system. This abstraction allows vehicle to operate in different modes corresponding to different high‐level decisions. It establishes a crucial connection between high‐level decision‐making and low‐level behaviour of the autonomous vehicle. Furthermore, barrier functions and predictive models that account for the relationship between the autonomous vehicle and oncoming traffic are incorporated. This technique enables us to guarantee the satisfaction of constraints, while also assessing performance within a prediction horizon. By repeatedly solving the online constrained optimization problems, we not only generate an optimal decision sequence for overtaking safely and efficiently but also enhance the adaptability and robustness. This adaptability allows the system to respond effectively to potential changes and unexpected events. Finally, the performance of the proposed MPC framework is demonstrated via simulations of four driving scenarios, which shows that it can handle multiple behaviours.

Abstract:The capacity for autonomous functionality serves as the fundamental ability and driving force for the cross-generational upgrading of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). With the disruptive transformation of artificial intelligence technology, autonomous trajectory planning based on intelligent algorithms has emerged as a key technique for enhancing UAVs' capacity for autonomous behavior, thus holding significant research value. To address the challenges of UAV trajectory planning in complex 3D environments, this paper proposes a multi-UAV cooperative trajectory-planning method based on a Modified Cheetah Optimization (MCO) algorithm. Firstly, a spatiotemporal cooperative trajectory planning model is established, incorporating UAV-cooperative constraints and performance constraints. Evaluation criteria, including fuel consumption, altitude, and threat distribution field cost functions, are introduced. Then, based on its parent Cheetah Optimization (CO) algorithm, the MCO algorithm incorporates a logistic chaotic mapping strategy and an adaptive search agent strategy, thereby improving the home-returning mechanism. Finally, extensive simulation experiments are conducted using a considerably large test dataset containing functions with the following four characteristics: unimodal, multimodal, separable, and inseparable. Meanwhile, a strategy for dimensionality reduction searching is employed to solve the problem of autonomous trajectory planning in real-world scenarios. The results of a conducted simulation demonstrate that the MCO algorithm outperforms several other related algorithms, showcasing smaller trajectory costs, a faster convergence speed, and stabler performance. The proposed algorithm exhibits a certain degree of correctness, effectiveness, and advancement in solving the problem of multi-UAV cooperative trajectory planning.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a socially cooperative optimal control framework to address the motion planning problem for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in mixed traffic using social value orientation (SVO) and a potential game approach. In the proposed framework, we formulate the interaction between a CAV and a human-driven vehicle (HDV) as a simultaneous game where each vehicle minimizes a weighted sum of its egoistic objective and a cooperative objective. The SVO angles are used to quantify preferences of the vehicles toward the egoistic and cooperative objectives. Using the potential game approach, we propose a single objective function for the optimal control problem whose weighting factors are chosen based on the SVOs of the vehicles. We prove that a Nash equilibrium can be obtained by minimizing the proposed objective function. To estimate the SVO angle of the HDV, we develop a moving horizon estimation algorithm based on maximum entropy inverse reinforcement learning. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by numerical simulations of a vehicle merging scenario.

Intersection Control Optimization for Automated Vehicles Using Genetic Algorithm

Abstract:With wireless communication and autonomous vehicle control capabilities, automated vehicle technology has the potential to improve the performance of an intersection. The objective of this research was to develop an intersection control algorithm that can jointly optimize the system performance and the trajectory of every single vehicle. An optimization algorithm was developed for a four-approach intersection with the consideration of turning movements and a full set of possible phases under a 100% automated vehicle environment. The intersection controller makes decisions on the vehicle passing sequence using a genetic algorithm–based optimization method, and at the same time it calculates the optimal vehicle trajectories. The optimization process repeats over a time horizon to process continually arriving vehicles. The performance of the proposed algorithm was assessed in various scenario-based simulation experiments and the results were compared with the actuated signal control. It was concluded that the proposed algorithm is able to reduce the intersection average travel time delay by 16.3% to 79.3%, depending on the demand scenario.
Enhancing Planning for Autonomous Driving via an Iterative Optimization Framework Incorporating Safety-Critical Trajectory Generation

Abstract:Ensuring the safety of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in complex and high-risk traffic scenarios remains a critical unresolved challenge. Current AV planning methods exhibit limitations in generating robust driving trajectories that effectively avoid collisions, highlighting the urgent need for improved planning strategies to address these issues. This paper introduces a novel iterative optimization framework that incorporates safety-critical trajectory generation to enhance AV planning. The use of the HighD dataset, which is collected using the wide-area remote sensing capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), is fundamental to the framework. Remote sensing enables large-scale real-time observation of traffic conditions, providing precise data on vehicle dynamics, road structures, and surrounding environments. To generate safety-critical trajectories, the decoder within the conditional variational auto-encoder (CVAE) is innovatively designed through a data-mechanism integration method, ensuring that these trajectories strictly adhere to vehicle kinematic constraints. Furthermore, two parallel CVAEs (Dual-CVAE) are trained collaboratively by a shared objective function to implicitly model the multi-vehicle interactions. Inspired by the concept of "learning to collide", adversarial optimization is integrated into the Dual-CVAE (Adv. Dual-CVAE), facilitating efficient generation from normal to safety-critical trajectories. Building upon this, these generated trajectories are then incorporated into an iterative optimization framework, significantly enhancing the AV's planning ability to avoid collisions. This framework decomposes the optimization process into stages, initially addressing normal trajectories and progressively tackling more safety-critical and collision trajectories. Finally, comparative case studies of enhancing AV planning are conducted and the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can efficiently enhance AV planning by generating safety-critical trajectories.
