Abstract:Forests provide most of the carbon sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2); however, accurately quantifying the uptake amount over a region remains challenging. For reginal or national estimates, the forest productivity model and forest inventories are used which provide information for national greenhouse gas inventories. However, it has some limitations, such as not considering below-ground biomass, its lack of species-specific allometric models, the restrictions it places during fieldwork, and the long period it takes to complete the survey. In contrast to inventory-based biomass estimates, the eddy covariance (EC) method can assess net CO2 exchange of a whole ecosystem continuously and automatically with a high temporal resolution. Since, these measurements only represent a site-level observation scale (∼ 1 km2), upscaling via linkages with observation data, remote sensing, and modeling methods has been used to estimate regional or national land-atmosphere carbon fluxes. In this study, we employ a data-driven method to estimate the national-scale gross primary production (GPP) and net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) by combining EC flux data from 10 sites in South Korea with remote sensing data through a machine learning algorithm based on support vector regression (SVR) for the period 2000–2018. Site-level evaluation of estimated GPP and NEE from the SVR-based model shows equivalent performance compared to other continental and global upscaled models. The mean estimated annual GPP and NEE of the South Korea forests region over the period 2000–2018 were 1465 ± 37 and −243 ± 32 g C m2 year−1, respectively. The SVR-based net primary production (NPP) was consistent with the biometric-based NPP (r 2 = 0.46, p < 0.05). This study shows that combining data from a national flux network and remote sensing using a data-driven approach can be used to estimate forest CO2 fluxes on a national scale.

Abstract:In this study, we use three process-based terrestrial ecosystem models (Lund-Potsdam-Jena Dynamic Global Vegetation Model — LPJ-DGVM; ORganizing Carbon and Hydrology In Dynamic Ecosystems – ORCHIDEE; Sheffield model – SDGVM) to investigate the historical response of ecosystem Net Primary Productivity (NPP) and Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP) over East Asia to climate change and rising atmospheric CO2. The results suggest that between 1901 and 2002, the modeled NPP has significantly increased by 5.5–8.5Tg C yr−1 (15–20% growth). Such increase in NPP has caused an increased cumulated terrestrial C storage by about 5–11Pg C. About 50–70% fraction of this total C sink is located in vegetation biomass. Our modeling results also suggest that 40–60% of the accumulate C uptake of the 20th century is credited to the period of 1980–2002. Although all models tend to agree at the continental scale that East Asia played a role of net C sink (0.14–0.18Pg C yr−1) during 1980s and 1990s, the trends of NEP are different among the models. Both LPJ and ORCHIDEE estimate a slight but insignificant NEP decrease from 1980 to 2002 (P>0.05), while SDGVM estimates a statistically significant increase in NEP at a rate of 0.005Pg C yr−2 (P<0.05). Also, there is no consensus among models on the dominant driving factors controlling interannual variation in NPP and NEP at the continental scale, implying that more efforts are needed to investigate the vulnerability of the East Asian terrestrial carbon cycle.

Abstract:This REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes regional study provides a synthesis of the carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems in East Asia, a region comprised of China, Japan, North and South Korea, and Mongolia. We estimate the current terrestrial carbon balance of East Asia and its driving mechanisms during 1990-2009 using three different approaches: inventories combined with satellite greenness measurements, terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycle models and atmospheric inversion models. The magnitudes of East Asia's terrestrial carbon sink from these three approaches are comparable: -0.293 +/- 0.033 PgC yr(-1) from inventory-remote sensing model-data fusion approach, -0.413 +/- 0.141 PgC yr(-1)(not considering biofuel emissions) or -0.224 +/- 0.141 PgC yr(-1) (considering biofuel emissions) for carbon cycle models, and -0.270 +/- 0.507 PgC yr(-1) for atmospheric inverse models. Here and in the following, the numbers behind +/- signs are standard deviations. The ensemble of ecosystem modeling based analyses further suggests that at the regional scale, climate change and rising atmospheric CO2 together resulted in a carbon sink of -0.289 +/- 0.135 PgC yr(-1), while land-use change and nitrogen deposition had a contribution of -0.013 +/- 0.029 PgC yr(-1) and -0.107 +/- 0.025 PgC yr(-1), respectively. Although the magnitude of climate change effects on the carbon balance varies among different models, all models agree that in response to climate change alone, southern China experienced an increase in carbon storage from 1990 to 2009, while northern East Asia including Mongolia and north China showed a decrease in carbon storage. Overall, our results suggest that about 13-27% of East Asia's CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning have been offset by carbon accumulation in its terrestrial territory over the period from 1990 to 2009. The underlying mechanisms of carbon sink over East Asia still remain largely uncertain, given the diversity and intensity of land management processes, and the regional conjunction of many drivers such as nutrient deposition, climate, atmospheric pollution and CO2 changes, which cannot be considered as independent for their effects on carbon storage.

Abstract:This study investigated the carbonate system and air-sea CO 2 exchange in the inshore waters along South Korea's western coastline in 2020. Overlooking these waters might introduce significant errors in estimating air-sea CO 2 fluxes of the southeastern Yellow Sea, given their interaction with land, offshore regions, and sediments. During periods other than summer, seasonal variations in seawater CO 2 partial pressure ( p CO 2 ) could be generally explained by thermal effects. Tidal mixing and shallow depths resulted in weaker stratification-induced carbon export compared to offshore regions. However, during summer, inshore waters exhibited high spatial variability in p CO 2 , ranging from approximately 185 to 1000 μatm. In contrast to offshore waters that modestly absorbed CO 2 , inshore waters shallower than 20 m emitted ∼100 Gg C yr −1 to the atmosphere. However, considering the high heterogeneity of the study area, additional observations with high spatial and temporal resolution are required to refine estimates of air-sea CO 2 exchange.

Abstract:CO2 fluxes and concentrations are not well understood in Northeast China, where dominant land surface types are mixed forest and cropland. Here, we analyzed the CO2 fluxes and concentrations using Eddy Covariance (EC) measurements, satellite observations, and the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model (WRF-VPRM). We also used WRF-VPRM outputs to examine CO2 transport/dispersion, and to quantify the biogenic and anthropogenic contributions to atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Finally, we investigated the uncertainties of simulating CO2 fluxes related to four VPRM parameters (including maximum light use efficiency, photosynthetically active radiation half-saturation value, and two respiration parameters) using offline ensemble simulations with randomly selected parameter values. The results indicated that mixed forests acted as a larger CO2 source and sink than rice paddies on average in 2016 due to a longer growth period and stronger ecosystem respiration, although the minimum EC-measured daily mean net ecosystem exchange (NEE) was smaller at rice paddy (-10 μmol m-2 s-1) than at mixed forest (-6.5 μmol m-2 s-1) during the growing season (May through September). The monthly fluctuation of column-averaged CO2 concentrations (XCO2) exceeded 10 ppm in Northeast China during 2016. Biogenic contribution (large negative in summer and insignificant in other months) offset about 70% of anthropogenic contribution of XCO2 in this region. WRF-VPRM modeling successfully captured seasonal and episodic variations of NEE and CO2 concentrations, however, the NEE in mixed forest was overestimated during daytime, mainly due to the uncertainties of VPRM parameters, especially maximum light use efficiency.

Abstract:Background Cities are a major source of atmospheric CO 2 ; however, understanding the surface CO 2 exchange processes that determine the net CO 2 flux emitted from each city is challenging owing to the high heterogeneity of urban land use. Therefore, this study investigates the spatiotemporal variations of urban CO 2 flux over the Seoul Capital Area, South Korea from 2017 to 2018, using CO 2 flux measurements at nine sites with different urban land-use types (baseline, residential, old town residential, commercial, and vegetation areas). Results Annual CO 2 flux significantly varied from 1.09 kg C m − 2 year − 1 at the baseline site to 16.28 kg C m − 2 year − 1 at the old town residential site in the Seoul Capital Area. Monthly CO 2 flux variations were closely correlated with the vegetation activity (r = − 0.61) at all sites; however, its correlation with building energy usage differed for each land-use type (r = 0.72 at residential sites and r = 0.34 at commercial sites). Diurnal CO 2 flux variations were mostly correlated with traffic volume at all sites (r = 0.8); however, its correlation with the floating population was the opposite at residential (r = − 0.44) and commercial (r = 0.80) sites. Additionally, the hourly CO 2 flux was highly related to temperature. At the vegetation site, as the temperature exceeded 24 °C, the sensitivity of CO 2 absorption to temperature increased 7.44-fold than that at the previous temperature. Conversely, the CO 2 flux of non-vegetation sites increased when the temperature was less than or exceeded the 18 °C baseline, being three-times more sensitive to cold temperatures than hot ones. On average, non-vegetation urban sites emitted 0.45 g C m − 2 h − 1 of CO 2 throughout the year, regardless of the temperature. Conclusions Our results demonstrated that most urban areas acted as CO 2 emission sources in all time zones; however, the CO 2 flux characteristics varied extensively based on urban land-use types, even within cities. Therefore, multiple observations from various land-use types are essential for identifying the comprehensive CO 2 cycle of each city to develop effective urban CO 2 reduction policies.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of carbon assimilation and sequestration in broad-leaved Korean pine forests is crucial for accurately estimating this significant aspect of temperate forests at a regional scale. In this study, we introduced a high-temporal resolution model designed for carbon assimilation insights at the plot scale, focusing on specific parameters such as leaf area dynamics, vertical leaf distribution, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) fluctuations, and the photosynthetic traits of tree species. The findings reveal that most tree species in broad-leaved Korean pine forests exhibit an inverted U-shaped pattern in leaf area dynamics, with shorter leaf drop periods than leaf expansion events. Leaf distribution varies significantly among different canopy heights, with approximately 80 % of the leaves above 15 m. PAR decreases as canopy height decreases, with PAR at 25 m accounting for about 60 % of the PAR above the canopy. Our framework incorporates a leaf-scale light-response curve and empirical photosynthesis-temperature relationships to estimate forest carbon assimilation on daily and hourly scales accurately. Using the model, we assess the gross primary productivity (GPP), leaf net photosynthetic assimilation (LNPA), and carbon increment (ΔC) of broad-leaved Korean pine forests from 2017 to 2020. The results demonstrate GPP, LNPA, and ΔC values of 21.4 t·ha −1 ·a −1 , 17.4 t·ha −1 ·a −1 , and 4.0 t·ha −1 ·a −1 , respectively. Regarding efficiency, GPP, LNPA, and ΔC per square meter of leaf per year are 179 g, 146 g, and 33 g, respectively. Notably, tree species in the canopy layer of the forest exhibit significantly higher efficiency than those in the understory layer. This research significantly contributes to our understanding of carbon cycling and the responses of forest ecosystems to climate change. Moreover, it provides a practical tool for forest management and the development of carbon sequestration strategies.

Abstract:The enhanced seasonal amplitude of atmospheric CO2 has been viewed so far primarily as a Northern Hemisphere phenomenon. Yet, analyses of atmospheric CO2 records from 49 stations between 1980 and 2018 reveal substantial trends and variations in this amplitude globally. While no significant trends can be discerned before 2000 in most places, strong positive trends emerge after 2000 in the southern high latitudes. Using factorial simulations with an atmospheric transport model and analyses of surface ocean Pco2 observations, we show that the increase is best explained by the onset of increasing seasonality of air-sea CO2 exchange over the Southern Ocean around 2000. Underlying these changes is the long-term ocean acidification trend that tends to enhance the seasonality of the air-sea fluxes, but this trend is modified by the decadal variability of the Southern Ocean carbon sink. The seasonal variations of atmospheric CO2 thus emerge as a sensitive recorder of the variations of the Southern Ocean carbon sink.
Spatial-Temporal Changes of Carbon Source/Sink in Terrestrial Vegetation Ecosystem and Response to Meteorological Factors in Yangtze River Delta Region (China)

Abstract:As an important part and the core link of a terrestrial ecosystem, terrestrial vegetation is the main means for human to regulate climate and mitigate the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region is an urban agglomeration with the strongest comprehensive strength among developing countries (China). In the context of global climate change, a rapid, comprehensive, and detailed understanding of the spatio-temporal characteristics and variation tendency of the net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of vegetation and its response to climate during the rapid development of the YRD region is important for protecting ecological land, strengthening land management, and optimizing urban planning. The monthly mean temperature and rainfall data from 63 meteorological stations, the MODIS net primary productivity product, and a land cover product in the YRD region were used to estimate the NEP from 2000 to 2019 based on the soil respiration model, and the correlation between NEP and meteorological factors (such as temperature and rainfall) was analyzed. The results showed that: (1) From 2000 to 2019, the carbon sink area was much larger than the carbon source area in terrestrial vegetation in the Yangtze River Delta, the mean NEP of the vegetation ecosystem in the past 20 years was 253.2 g C·m−2·a−1, and the spatial distribution presented a trend that was higher in the south and lower in the north, higher in the east and lower in the west, and that gradually increased from northwest to southeast; moreover, the NEP of mountain areas was generally higher than that of river courses and urban surroundings. The interannual fluctuation of NEP was small, but presented a slightly increasing trend, and the interannual variation of NEP was significantly correlated with the maximum NEP in this region. (2) The carbon sink capacity of different vegetation cover types was (from strong to weak): forestlands > grasslands > wetlands ≈ croplands. (3) The area with the NEP change rate (θslope) > 0 accounted for 69.0%; however, there was certain spatial difference, the proportions of the areas with θslope Zhejiang Province > Jiangsu Province ≈ Anhui Province. (4) There was a correlation between NEP and the annual mean temperature and annual precipitation in some regions.

Abstract:Blue carbon science requires the estimates of organic carbon stock and sequestration rate; however, holistic data analysis remains limited in South Korea. The present study reports current organic carbon stocks and sequestration rates in the coastal areas of West Sea, South Sea, and East Sea of South Korea, encompassing entire intertidal areas using long-term field survey combined with remote sensing technology. Twenty-one intertidal flats were targeted across seven provinces (Gyeonggi, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Gangwon). Out of the evaluated environmental parameters, mud content represented a significant factor controlling sedimentary organic carbon stocks across target areas, and was significantly positively correlated to the total organic carbon (p < 0.05). Organic carbon stocks measured in salt marshes (i.e., upper intertidal zone) reflected the high carbon fixation capacity of halophytes through primary production. Sediment textural type was classified using analysis of remotely sensed imagery, and was closely correlated to field-based classification data (p < 0.05). Using field and remote sensing results, we estimated total organic carbon stocks (13,142,149 Mg C) and sequestration rates (71,383 Mg C yr-1) in the tidal flats of South Korea. This study presents the first report on blue carbon potential in the Korean tidal flats, providing baseline information on the carbon dynamics of intertidal sediments in this region and, potentially, elsewhere.
Impacts of urban greenspace on offsetting carbon emissions for middle Korea

Abstract:Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas and a major agent of climate change. This study quantified carbon (C) emissions from energy consumption and C storage and uptake by greenspace for three cities in middle Korea: Chuncheon, Kangleung, and Seoul. Carbon emissions were estimated using C emission coefficients for fossil fuels consumed. Carbon storage and uptake by woody plants were computed applying biomass equations and radial growth rates. The soils in Chuncheon were cored to analyze organic C storage. Annual C emissions were 37.0 t/ha/yr in Kangleung, 47.2 t/ha/yr in Chuncheon, and 264.9 t/ha/yr in Seoul. Mean C storage by woody plants ranged from 26.0 to 60.1 t/ha for natural lands within the study cities, and from 4.7 to 7.2 t/ha for urban lands (all land use types except natural and agricultural lands). Mean annual C uptake by woody plants ranged from 1.60 to 3.91 t/ha/yr for natural lands within the cities, and from 0.53 to 0.80 t/ha/yr for urban lands. There were no significant differences (95% confidence level) between the cities in C storage and uptake per ha for urban lands. Organic C storage in Chuncheon soils (to a depth of 60 cm) averaged 31.6 t/ha for natural lands and 24.8 t/ha for urban lands. Woody plants stored an amount of C equivalent to 6.0-59.1% of total C emissions within the cities, and annually offset total C emissions by 0.5-2.2%. Carbon storage in soils was 1.2 times greater than that by woody plants in Chuncheon. The C reduction benefits of woody plants were greater in Chuncheon and Kangleung, where areal distribution of natural lands was larger and the population density lower than in Seoul. Strategies to increase C storage and uptake by urban greenspace were explored.

Abstract:To improve our understanding of the carbon balance, it is significant to study long-term variations of all components of carbon exchange and their driving factors. Gross primary production (GPP), respiration (Re), and net ecosystem productivity (NEP) from the hourly to the annual sums in a subtropical coniferous forest in China during 2003–2017 were calculated using empirical models developed previously in terms of PAR (photosynthetically active radiation), and meteorological parameters, GPP, Re, and NEP were calculated. The calculated GPP, Re, and NEP were in reasonable agreement with the observations, and their seasonal and interannual variations were well reproduced. The model-estimated annual sums of GPP and Re over 2003–2017 were larger than the observations of 11.38% and 5.52%, respectively, and the model-simulated NEP was lower by 34.99%. The GPP, Re, and NEP showed clear interannual variations, and both the calculated and the observed annual sums of GPPs increased on average by 1.04% and 0.93%, respectively, while the Re values increased by 4.57% and 1.06% between 2003 and 2017. The calculated and the observed annual sums of NEPs/NEEs (net ecosystem exchange) decreased/increased by 1.04%/0.93%, respectively, which exhibited an increase of the carbon sink at the experimental site. During the period 2003–2017, the annual averages of PAR and the air temperature decreased by 0.28% and 0.02%, respectively, while the annual average water vapor pressure increased by 0.87%. The increase in water vapor contributed to the increases of GPP, Re, and NEE in 2003–2017. Good linear and non-linear relationships were found between the monthly calculated GPP and the satellite solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) and then applied to compute GPP with relative biases of annual sums of GPP of 5.20% and 4.88%, respectively. Large amounts of CO2 were produced in a clean atmosphere, indicating a clean atmospheric environment will enhance CO2 storage in plants, i.e., clean atmosphere is beneficial to human health and carbon sink, as well as slowing down climate warming.

Abstract:The ocean is closely related to global warming and on-going climate change by regulating amounts of carbon dioxide through its interaction with the atmosphere. The monitoring of ocean carbon dioxide is important for a better understanding of the role of the ocean as a carbon sink, and regional and global carbon cycles. This study estimated the fugacity of carbon dioxide (ƒCO2) over the East Sea located between Korea and Japan. In situ measurements, satellite data and products from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) and the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) reanalysis data were used through stepwise multi-variate nonlinear regression (MNR) and two machine learning approaches (i.e., support vector regression (SVR) and random forest (RF)). We used five ocean parameters—colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM; <0.3 m−1), chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a; <21 mg/m3), mixed layer depth (MLD; <160 m), sea surface salinity (SSS; 32–35), and sea surface temperature (SST; 8–28 °C)—and four band reflectance (Rrs) data (400 nm–565 nm) and their ratios as input parameters to estimate surface seawater ƒCO2 (270–430 μatm). Results show that RF generally performed better than stepwise MNR and SVR. The root mean square error (RMSE) of validation results by RF was 5.49 μatm (1.7%), while those of stepwise MNR and SVR were 10.59 μatm (3.2%) and 6.82 μatm (2.1%), respectively. Ocean parameters (i.e., sea surface salinity (SSS), sea surface temperature (SST), and mixed layer depth (MLD)) appeared to contribute more than the individual bands or band ratios from the satellite data. Spatial and seasonal distributions of monthly ƒCO2 produced from the RF model and sea-air CO2 flux were also examined.

Abstract:Satellite retrievals of the column-averaged dry air mole fractions of CO2 (XCO2) could help to improve carbon flux estimation due to their good spatial coverage. In this study, in order to assimilate the GOSAT (Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite) XCO2 retrievals, the Global Carbon Assimilation System (GCAS) is upgraded with new assimilation algorithms, procedures, a localization scheme, and a higher assimilation parameter resolution. This upgraded system is referred to as GCASv2. Based on this new system, the global terrestrial ecosystem (BIO) and ocean (OCN) carbon fluxes from 1 May 2009 to 31 December 2015 are constrained using the GOSAT ACOS (Atmospheric CO2 Observations from Space) XCO2 retrievals (Version 7.3). The posterior carbon fluxes from 2010 to 2015 are independently evaluated using CO2 observations from 52 surface flask sites. The results show that the posterior carbon fluxes could significantly improve the modeling of atmospheric CO2 concentrations, with global mean bias decreases from a prior value of 1.6 +/- 1.8 ppm to -0.5 +/- 1.8 ppm. The uncertainty reduction (UR) of the global BIO flux is 17 %, and the highest monthly regional UR could reach 51 %. Globally, the mean annual BIO and OCN carbon sinks and their interannual variations inferred in this study are very close to the estimates of CarbonTracker 2017 (CT2017) during the study period, and the inferred mean atmospheric CO2 growth rate and its interannual changes are also very close to the observations. Regionally, over the northern lands, the strongest carbon sinks are seen in temperate North America, followed by Europe, boreal Asia, and temperate Asia; in the tropics, there are strong sinks in tropical South America and tropical Asia, but a very weak sink in Africa. This pattern is significantly different from the estimates of CT2017, but the estimated carbon sinks for each continent and some key regions like boreal Asia and the Amazon are comparable or within the range of previous bottom-up estimates. The inversion also changes the interannual variations in carbon fluxes in most TransCom land regions, which have a better relationship with the changes in severe drought area (SDA) or leaf area index (LAI), or are more consistent with previous estimates for the impact of drought. These results suggest that the GCASv2 system works well with the GOSAT XCO2 retrievals and shows good performance with respect to estimating the sur- face carbon fluxes; meanwhile, our results also indicate that the GOSAT XCO2 retrievals could help to better understand the interannual variations in regional carbon fluxes.

Abstract:Clarifying how increased atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2) contributes to accelerated land carbon sequestration remains important since this process is the largest negative feedback in the coupled carbon–climate system. Here, we constrain the sensitivity of the terrestrial carbon sink to eCO2 over the temperate Northern Hemisphere for the past five decades, using 12 terrestrial ecosystem models and data from seven CO2 enrichment experiments. This constraint uses the heuristic finding that the northern temperate carbon sink sensitivity to eCO2 is linearly related to the site-scale sensitivity across the models. The emerging data-constrained eCO2 sensitivity is 0.64 ± 0.28 PgC yr−1 per hundred ppm of eCO2. Extrapolating worldwide, this northern temperate sensitivity projects the global terrestrial carbon sink to increase by 3.5 ± 1.9 PgC yr−1 for an increase in CO2 of 100 ppm. This value suggests that CO2 fertilization alone explains most of the observed increase in global land carbon sink since the 1960s. More CO2 enrichment experiments, particularly in boreal, arctic and tropical ecosystems, are required to explain further the responsible processes. The northern temperate carbon sink is estimated to increase by 0.64 PgC each year for each increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations by 100 ppm, suggests an analysis of data from field experiments at 7 sites constraints.
Vegetation Greening Enhanced the Regional Terrestrial Carbon Uptake in the Dongting Lake Basin of China

Abstract:Terrestrial ecosystem carbon uptake is essential to achieving a regional carbon neutrality strategy, particularly in subtropical humid areas with dense vegetation. Due to the complex spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the carbon uptake of ecosystems, it is difficult to quantify the influence and contribution of different factors. With the aid of multisource remote sensing data, the spatiotemporal characteristics of carbon uptake and the impact of vegetation change were explored in the Dongting Lake Basin from 2001 to 2020. Based on the Conversion of Land Use and its Effects at Small regional extent (CLUE-S) model, we simulated the land use of the basin under different development scenarios in 2030. Our results showed that the basin has demonstrated a significant greening trend in the last 20 years, with a multiyear average NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) of 0.60 and an increasing trend (y = 0.0048x − 9.069, R2 = 0.89, p < 0.01). In this context, the multiyear mean of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was 314.95 g C·m−2·a−1 and also showed a significant increasing trend (y = 1.8915x + 295.09, R2 = 0.23, p < 0.05). Moreover, though the future carbon uptake might decrease because of the enhanced anthropogenic activities, the ecological conservation scenario might mitigate the reduction by 0.05 × 107 t. In conclusion, the greening trend enhanced the ecosystem carbon uptake in the Dongting lake basin. Considering the representativeness of the Dongting Lake Basin, the results of our study would provide useful clues for understanding the trend and pattern of terrestrial carbon uptake and for guiding the carbon neutrality strategy in the subtropical humid area.

Abstract:Over the past century, increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations have enhanced photosynthesis through CO2 fertilization across the globe. However, the increased growth has also led to greater respiration rates – both from vegetation (autotrophic respiration) and through the breakdown of plant litter and soil organic matter (heterotrophic respiration). The resulting change in carbon flux – and its spatial distribution – that can be attributed to increasing CO2 and climate change remain unknown. We used the Carbon Data Model Framework (CARDAMOM), a model‐data fusion system that assimilates global observations from satellites and other sources to create an ensemble of observationally‐constrained carbon cycle representations, to determine the photosynthesis and respiration fluxes that can be attributed to increased atmospheric CO2 and associated climate change from 1920‐2015. Across the globe, the response of photosynthesis and respiration to atmospheric CO2 dominates their response to climate alone. The regional distribution of the carbon sink attributable to climate change and CO2 is strongly influenced by the `loss ratio of carbon gained' – the fraction of enhanced photosynthesis that is lost to respiration. While the wet tropics' attributable photosynthesis flux is 1.4 times larger than that of the temperate region, the attributable flux of net carbon uptake is actually 1.25 larger in the temperate region, due to the wet tropics' greater heterotrophic respiration response to enhanced plant growth. At global scale, the loss ratio of carbon gained is 83±0.6%. Our results highlight the importance of the respiration responses to enhanced plant growth in regulating the land carbon sink.

Spatial variability and major controlling factors of CO<sub>2</sub>sink strength in Asian terrestrial ecosystems: evidence from eddy covariance data

Abstract:Asian terrestrial ecosystems cover an extensive area characterized by a large variety in climates and ecosystem properties. The observations of ecosystem CO2 flux in this area are increasing both in duration and spatial density, but no synthesis has yet been conducted. We surveyed CO2 flux observation data obtained by eddy covariance methods at 49 sites in terrestrial Asia. The measurements at most sites (44 of 49) began after 2000. The net ecosystem uptake of CO2 (NEE) varied greatly among sites and years and averaged -132.6 +/- 73.7, -250.1 +/- 206.1, and -180.1 +/- 361.7 g C m(-2) yr(-1), in boreal, temperate, and tropical Asia, respectively, and the coefficient of variation among sites increased from boreal to tropical Asia. The site-averaged annual NEE was correlated linearly with the mean annual temperature (T-air) and also correlated logarithmically with the precipitation. Multiple regression analysis and stepwise analysis indicated that photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) and T-air were the most significant predictors of the annual NEE. The study results suggest that Asian terrestrial ecosystems are currently significant net CO2 sinks and that the sink strength is largely controlled by temperature, moisture, and light conditions.
Spatial distribution and origin of soil CO2 in Andeok area, Jeju

Abstract:CO 2 flux measurements and soil gas samples were collected to determine the origin and distribution characteristics of soil gas discharged at Andeok area, Jeju, South Korea. Additionally, this study aims to discuss agricultural activities that may contribute to increased soil CO 2 emissions. CO 2 flux was measured at 127 points, while soil gas sampling for gas components and carbon-13 (δ 13 C CO2 ) analysis was performed at 56 points. The measured CO 2 fluxes in the study area ranged from 0.8 to 83.8 g/m 2 /d (mean: 14.3 g/m 2 /d), which was lower than CO 2 fluxes observed in areas with geogenic CO 2 discharge (e.g., near active volcanoes, faults, and CO 2 -rich water sources). The soil gas analysis revealed that the CO 2 concentration and δ 13 C CO2 ranged from 491 to 23,722 ppmv (mean: 3,205 ppmv) and from −25.2 to −10.7‰ (mean: −19.4‰), respectively. In the cumulative probability diagram, the threshold values for CO 2 flux and soil CO 2 concentration were 41.3 g/m 2 /d and 6,693 ppmv, respectively. Samples exceeding the CO 2 flux threshold were affected by urea fertilizer application based on land use nearby, and did not overlay with samples exceeding the soil CO 2 threshold, indicating different transport mechanisms. Results from a detailed survey near a soil gas sampling location close to high soil CO 2 showed that soil CO 2 concentrations increased with depth, especially during summer when atmospheric temperatures increased. Spatially, higher soil CO 2 concentrations were observed in areas with accumulated plant debris from tangerine orchards. The δ 13 C CO2 and relationships among CO 2 -O 2 , N 2 -CO 2 , and N 2 /O 2 -CO 2 indicated that all collected samples had a biogenic origin. Although geogenic soil gases were not observed in this study, our findings are useful for future research on Jeju Island, as they provide baseline values for distinguishing geogenic soil gas from those with natural and agricultural origins. Moreover, this result provides insights into agricultural activities such as urea fertilization and plowing and their contribution to soil CO 2 increase, and inspires future research on negative soil CO 2 flux.

Abstract:Terrestrial ecosystems play a significant role in the global carbon cycle and offset a large fraction of anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. The terrestrial carbon sink is increasing, yet the mechanisms responsible for its enhancement, and implications for the growth rate of atmospheric CO 2 , remain unclear. Here using global carbon budget estimates, ground, atmospheric and satellite observations, and multiple global vegetation models, we report a recent pause in the growth rate of atmospheric CO 2 , and a decline in the fraction of anthropogenic emissions that remain in the atmosphere, despite increasing anthropogenic emissions. We attribute the observed decline to increases in the terrestrial sink during the past decade, associated with the effects of rising atmospheric CO 2 on vegetation and the slowdown in the rate of warming on global respiration. The pause in the atmospheric CO 2 growth rate provides further evidence of the roles of CO 2 fertilization and warming-induced respiration, and highlights the need to protect both existing carbon stocks and regions, where the sink is growing rapidly.
