Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is a key variable in the study of the energy exchange between the land surface and the atmosphere. Among the different methods proposed to estimate LST, the quadratic split-window (SW) method has achieved considerable popularity. This method works well when the emissivities are high in both channels. Unfortunately, it performs poorly for low land surface emissivities (LSEs). To solve this problem, assuming that the LSE is known, the constant in the quadratic SW method was calculated by maintaining the other coefficients the same as those obtained for the black body condition. This procedure permits transfer of the emissivity effect to the constant. The result demonstrated that the constant was influenced by both atmospheric water vapour content (W) and atmospheric temperature (T0) in the bottom layer. To parameterize the constant, an exponential approximation between W and T0 was used. A LST retrieval algorithm was proposed. The error for the proposed algorithm was RMSE = 0.70 K. Sensitivity analysis results showed that under the consideration of NEΔT = 0.2 K, 20% uncertainty in W and 1% uncertainties in the channel mean emissivity and the channel emissivity difference, the RMSE was 1.29 K. Compared with AST 08 product, the proposed algorithm underestimated LST by about 0.8 K for both study areas when ASTER L1B data was used as a proxy of Gaofen-5 (GF-5) satellite data. The GF-5 satellite is scheduled to be launched in 2017.

Abstract:The Gaofen-5 (GF-5) satellite, the only satellite that provides the thermal infrared (TIR) sensor in the national high-resolution earth observation project of China, will observe earth surface at a spatial resolution of 40 m in four TIR channels. This paper aims at developing a new nonlinear, four-channel split-window (SW) algorithm to retrieve land surface temperature (LST) from GF-5 image. In the SW algorithm, its coefficients were obtained based on several subranges of atmospheric column water vapors (CWV) under various land surface conditions, in order to remove the atmospheric effect and improve the retrieval accuracy. Results showed that the new algorithm can obtain LST with root-mean-square errors of less than 1 K. Compared with previous two-and three-channel SW algorithms, the four-channel SW algorithm obtained better results in estimating LST, especially under moist atmospheres. Methods of estimating CWV and pixel emissivity were also conducted. The sensitive analysis of LST retrieval to instrument noise and uncertainty of pixel emissivity and water vapor demonstrated the good performance of the proposed algorithm. At last, the new SW algorithm was validated using ground-measured data at six sites, and some simulated images from airborne hyperspectral TIR data.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is a key surface feature parameter. Temperature and emissivity separation (TES) and split-window (SW) algorithms are two typical LST estimation algorithms that have been applied to a variety of sensors to generate LST products. The TES algorithm can synchronously obtain LST and emissivity, but it requires high accuracy for atmospheric correction of the thermal infrared (TIR) data and does not perform well for surfaces with low spectral emissivity contrast. On the contrary, the SW algorithm can retrieve LST without detailed atmospheric data because the linear or nonlinear combination of brightness temperatures in the two adjacent TIR channels can reduce the atmospheric effect; however, this algorithm requires prior accurate pixel emissivity. Combining the two algorithms can improve the accuracy of LST estimation because the emissivity calculated from the TES algorithm can be used in the SW algorithm, and the LST from the SW algorithm can then be applied to the TES algorithm as an initial value to refine emissivity and LST. This paper investigates the aforementioned hybrid algorithm using Chinese Gaofen-5 satellite data, which will provide four-channel data for TIR at 40 m for synchronously retrieving LST and emissivity. The results showed that the hybrid algorithm was less sensitive to instrument noise and atmospheric data error, and can obtain LST and emissivity with an error less than 1 K and 0.015, respectively, which is better than those obtained with the single TES or SW algorithm. Finally, the hybrid algorithm was tested in simulated image and ground-measured data, and obtained accurate results.
A Simplified Method for Retrieving Aerosol Optical Thickness Using Visibility Data Between 1980 and 2014, A Case Study in China.

Abstract:Analysis of long-term variations of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) is essential to understand the climate change and earth radiation budget. A simplified method was developed in this study to derive the AOT using more than thirty-year surface visibility and aerosol vertical distribution from LiDAR climatology of vertical aerosol structure for space-based LiDAR simulation studies data. Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) TERRA and AQUA daily measurements were used to evaluate the performance of the inferred AOT. Results show that the correlations of monthly AOT between MODIS measurements and inferred data are higher than 0.59 and the annual AOT values have stronger correlations (r > 0.82) than monthly data. The inferred AOT can capture the general spatial distribution similar to satellite images with long-term scale. The correlation of seasonal variation between two datasets is also higher than 0.77. The root mean squared error of inferred AOT relative to MODIS AOT is about 0.22 and 0.11 for monthly and yearly data, respectively. Analysis using singular value decomposition shows that the inferred AOT is consistent with MODIS measurements during 2002–2014 spatially and temporally. The average annual AOT in over 200 stations in China between 1980 and 2014 shows generally upward trends. Results from this paper can be used for further analysis of the aerosol effects on climate change in a regional scale.

Abstract:The role of land surface temperature (LST) is of the utmost importance in multiple academic disciplines, such as climatology, hydrology, ecology, and meteorology. To date, many methods have been proposed to estimate LST from satellite thermal infrared data. The single-channel (SC) algorithm can provide an accurate result in retrieving LST based on prior knowledge of known land surface emissivity (LSE). The SC algorithm is extensively employed for retrieving LST from Landsat series data due to its simplicity and its reliance on just one thermal infrared channel. The Thermal Infrared Sensor (IRS) on the Chinese ZY1-02E satellite is a pivotal instrument employed for gathering thermal infrared (TIR) data of land surfaces. The objective of this research is to evaluate the feasibility of a single-channel approach based on water vapor scaling (WVS) for deriving LST from ZY1-02E IRS data because of its wide spectrum range, i.e., 7~12 μm, which is affected strongly by both atmospheric water vapor and ozone. Three study areas, namely the Baotou, Heihe River Basin, and Yantai Sea sites, were selected as validation sites to evaluate the LST inversion accuracy. This evaluation was also conducted via cross-comparison between the retrieved LST and MODIS LST products. The results revealed that the WVS-based method exhibited an average bias of 0.63 K and an RMSE of 1.62 K compared to the in situ LSTs. The WVS-based method demonstrated reasonable accuracy through cross-validation with the MODIS LST product, with an average bias of 0.77 K and an RMSE of 2.0 K. These findings indicate that the WVS-based method is effective in estimating LST from ZY1-02E IRS data.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is an essential parameter widely used in environmental studies. The Medium Resolution Spectral Imager II (MERSI-II) boarded on the second generation Chinese polar-orbiting meteorological satellite, Fengyun-3D (FY-3D), provides a new opportunity for LST retrieval at a spatial resolution of 250 m that is higher than that of the already widely used Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) LST data of 1000 m. However, there is no operational LST product from FY-3D MERSI-II data available for free access. Therefore, in this study, we developed an improved two-factor split-window algorithm (TFSWA) of LST retrieval from this data source as it has two thermal-infrared (TIR) bands. The essential coefficients of the TFSWA algorithm have been carefully and precisely estimated for the FY-3D MERSI-II TIR thermal bands. A new approach for estimating land surface emissivity has been developed using the ASTER Global Emissivity Database (ASTER GED) and the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP) data. A model to estimate the atmospheric water vapor content (AWVC) from the three atmospheric water vapor absorption bands (bands 16, 17, and 18) has been developed as AWVC has been recognized as the most important factor determining the variation of AT. Using MODTRAN 5.2, the equations for the AT estimate from the retrieved AWVC were established. In addition, the AT of the pixels at the far edge of FY-3D MERSI-II data may be strongly affected by the increase of the optical path. Viewing zenith angle (VZA) correction equations were proposed in the study to correct this effect on AT estimation. Field data from four stations were applied to validate the improved TFSWA in the study. Cross-validation with MODIS LST (MYD11) was also conducted to evaluate the improved TFSWA. The cross-validation result indicates that the FY-3D MERSI-II LST from the improved TFSWA are comparable with MODIS LST while the correlation coefficients between FY-3D MERSI-II LST and MODIS LST over the Mid-East China region are in the range of 0.84~0.98 for different seasons and land cover types. Validation with 318 field LST samples indicates that the average MAE and R2 of the scenes at the four stations are about 1.97 K and 0.98, respectively. Thus, it could be concluded that the improved TFSWA developed in the study can be a good algorithm for LST retrieval from FY-3D MERSI-II data with acceptable accuracy.

Abstract:This article proposes a combination method of nonlinear split-window (NSW) algorithm and temperature and emissivity separation (TES) algorithm to estimate land surface temperature (LST) from the remotely sensed data observed by the Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) onboard Fengyun-4B (FY-4B), China's second-generation meteorological geostationary satellite. The atmospheric radiation transfer model MODTRAN5.2 is used to simulate the AGRI thermal infrared (TIR) channel satellite observations in ten different viewing zenith angles (VZAs) from 0° to 70°. The optimal thermal channel combination and coefficients of the NSW algorithm are determined using a statistical regression method according to the grouping of the mean emissivity, the atmospheric water vapor content (WVC), and the LST. ERA5 reanalysis data provide atmospheric profiles for atmospheric correction, and then, the land surface emissivity (LSE) could be estimated according to the TES algorithm. The combination of Channel-12 (centered at ) and Channel-14 (centered at ) or the combination of Channel-13 (centered at ) and Channel-14 (centered at ) depends on different groups and VZAs. The statistical regression analysis showed that the root-mean-square error (RMSE) between the simulated and estimated LST is less than 0.7 and 1.8 K with the determined emissivity under VZA = 0° and VZA = 60°, respectively. Compared with the MODIS LST products (MYD11A1), the retrieved LST image has a similar spatial distribution, with the RMSE of 1.71 K.

Land Surface Temperature Retrieval from Landsat 8 Data and Validation with Geosensor Network

Abstract:A method for the retrieval of land surface temperature (LST) from the two thermal bands of Landsat 8 data is proposed in this paper. The emissivities of vegetation, bare land, buildings, and water are estimated using different features of the wavelength ranges and spectral response functions. Based on the Planck function of the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) band 10 and band 11, the radiative transfer equation is rebuilt and the LST is obtained using the modified emissivity parameters. A sensitivity analysis for the LST retrieval is also conducted. The LST was retrieved from Landsat 8 data for the city of Zoucheng, Shandong Province, China, using the proposed algorithm, and the LST reference data were obtained at the same time from a geosensor network (GSN). A comparative analysis was conducted between the retrieved LST and the reference data from the GSN. The results showed that water had a higher LST error than the other land-cover types, of less than 1.2°C, and the LST errors for buildings and vegetation were less than 0.75°C. The difference between the retrieved LST and reference data was about 1°C on a clear day. These results confirm that the proposed algorithm is effective for the retrieval of LST from the Landsat 8 thermal bands, and a GSN is an effective way to validate and improve the performance of LST retrieval.
Improving HJ-1B/IRS LST Retrieval of the Generalized Single-Channel Algorithm with Refined ERA5 Atmospheric Profile Database

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is a fundamental variable of environmental monitoring and surface equilibrium. Although the HJ-1B infrared scanner (IRS) has accumulated many observations, further application of HJ-1B/IRS is limited by the lack of LST products. This study refined the ERA5 atmospheric profile database, instead of the widely used traditional TIGR atmospheric profile database, and simulated the coefficients of the generalized single-channel (GSCs) algorithms to improve LST retrieval. GSCs can be divided into the GSCw and GSCwT algorithms, depending on whether the input is atmospheric water vapor content (WVC) or in situ near-surface air temperature and WVC. Land surface emissivity (LSE) was obtained from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Emissivity Dataset (GED) and vegetation/snow cover products. Then, the retrieved LSTs were evaluated using the LSTs from the RTE algorithm, TIGRw/TIGRwT profiles, and in situ near-surface air temperature from the HiWATER experiment in China from 2012 to 2014. The bias (root mean square error (RMSE)) values are displayed as ERA5wT < RTE < ERA5w < TIGRwT < TIGRw. The accuracy of ERA5wT, with a bias (RMSE) of 0.02 K (2.30 K), is higher than that of RTE, with a bias (RMSE) of 0.74 K (2.47 K). The accuracy of RTE is preferable to that of ERA5w, with a bias (RMSE) of 0.89 K (2.48 K), followed by TIGRwT, with a bias (RMSE) of −1.18 K (2.50 K), and then, TIGRw, with a bias (RMSE) of 1.60 K (2.77 K). In summary, the accuracy of LST obtained by GSC from the refined ERA5 atmospheric profiles is higher than that obtained from the TIGR profiles. The accuracy of LST obtained by GSCwT is greater than that obtained by GSCw. The accuracy of LST obtained using in situ near-surface air temperature is higher than that obtained using ERA5 air temperature. The accuracy of LSEASTER is slightly better than that of LSEMOD21. The aforementioned conclusions can provide scientific support to generate HJ-1B/IRS LST products.

Abstract:It is difficult to retrieve aerosol and surface reflectance properties over land, simultaneously, from satellite observations. In the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol algorithm, 2.1-mu m observations are essential to determine land surface reflectances. However, observations at 2.1 mu m are not widely available for other sensors. To get rid of 2.1-mu m observations in aerosol retrievals, we suggest a new method that makes use of the priori relationships among surface reflectances at different wavelengths in terms of the surface normalized difference vegetation index (sNDVI), which is defined by the surface reflectances at 0.87 and 0.67 mu m. It has advantages to parameterize surface reflectances due to its independence from atmospheric condition. Based on these newly established surface reflectance relationships and the MODIS observations at 0.47, 0.67, 0.87, and 1.64 mu m, we solve four variables simultaneously with the new method: aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 0.55 mu m, proportion of fine mode AOD, surface reflectance at 0.67 mu m, and sNDVI. The preliminary retrieval tests indicate that this method can successfully retrieve the aerosol properties and land cover features over East Asia. A comparison of the retrieved AODs at 0.55 mu m with the AERONET observations shows a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of about 0.16, at the Beijing and Xianghe sites, in August 2007. The accuracy is the same order of magnitude as the MODIS aerosol algorithm (RMSE = 0.14) during the same period. The results demonstrate that the quality of aerosol retrieval in the new method is comparable to that of the MODIS aerosol algorithm over the testing area.
An Improved Mono-Window Algorithm for Land Surface Temperature Retrieval from Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor Data

Abstract:The successful launch of the Landsat 8 satellite with two thermal infrared bands on February 11, 2013, for continuous Earth observation provided another opportunity for remote sensing of land surface temperature (LST). However, calibration notices issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that data from the Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) Band 11 have large uncertainty and suggested using TIRS Band 10 data as a single spectral band for LST estimation. In this study, we presented an improved mono-window (IMW) algorithm for LST retrieval from the Landsat 8 TIRS Band 10 data. Three essential parameters (ground emissivity, atmospheric transmittance and effective mean atmospheric temperature) were required for the IMW algorithm to retrieve LST. A new method was proposed to estimate the parameter of effective mean atmospheric temperature from local meteorological data. The other two essential parameters could be both estimated through the so-called land cover approach. Sensitivity analysis conducted for the IMW algorithm revealed that the possible error in estimating the required atmospheric water vapor content has the most significant impact on the probable LST estimation error. Under moderate errors in both water vapor content and ground emissivity, the algorithm had an accuracy of ~1.4 K for LST retrieval. Validation of the IMW algorithm using the simulated datasets for various situations indicated that the LST difference between the retrieved and the simulated ones was 0.67 K on average, with an RMSE of 0.43 K. Comparison of our IMW algorithm with the single-channel (SC) algorithm for three main atmosphere profiles indicated that the average error and RMSE of the IMW algorithm were −0.05 K and 0.84 K, respectively, which were less than the −2.86 K and 1.05 K of the SC algorithm. Application of the IMW algorithm to Nanjing and its vicinity in east China resulted in a reasonable LST estimation for the region. Spatial variation of the extremely hot weather, a frequently-occurring phenomenon of an abnormal heat flux process in summer along the Yangtze River Basin, had been thoroughly analyzed. This successful application suggested that the IMW algorithm presented in the study could be used as an efficient method for LST retrieval from the Landsat 8 TIRS Band 10 data.

Abstract:Thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing technology is an effective way to obtain a large-scale land surface temperature. The GaoFen-5 (GF-5) satellite, the fifth satellite in the national high-resolution Earth observation project of China, was launched May 9, 2018. The Visible and Infrared Multiple-channel Sensor (VIMS) onboard GF-5 can observe land surface thermal emission in four TIR channels within 8.0-12.0 μm with a spatial resolution of 40 m, much finer than that of ASTER (90 m), Landsat 8 (100 m), and MODIS (1 km). Under the support of national high-resolution earth observation project of China, several algorithms have been developed to retrieve LST and emissivity from VIMS image and generate products. This paper will present an overview the GF-5 LST retrieval algorithms.
Determination of global land surface temperature using data from only five selected thermal infrared channels: Method extension and accuracy assessment

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is an essential input for modeling the processes of energy exchange and balance of the earth's surface. Thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing is considered to be the most efficient way to obtain accurate LST, both regionally and globally. Currently, many LST retrieval algorithms have been developed, including the up-to-date SW-TES (SW: split window; TES: temperature-emissivity separation) method, which is claimed to be able to accurately derive LST without the need for atmospheric information and land surface emissivity (LSE) based on the selected multiple TIR channel configuration. However, this hybrid method is actually not applicable to observations with large viewing angles and was only preliminarily evaluated in Australia. In this study, this method was extended for application to global TIR measurements with different viewing angles. Additionally, the performance of this extended SW-TES method was assessed globally for different seasons by using the MODIS LST product as a reference, and was also validated using in-situ LST measurements from the SURFRAD (SURFace RADiation budget network) sites. The results showed that the LST retrievals using the extended SW-TES method were comparable to the MODIS LST product, with discrepancies of <2.7 K and < 1.8 K for global daytime and nighttime observations, respectively. Validations based on the SURFRAD in-situ LST measurements indicated that the extended method could be used to retrieve LST accurately with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of approximately 3.6 K during the daytime and 2.4 K during the nighttime. However, special attention should be paid when applying the extended method to daytime observations on grasslands and shrublands during hot seasons, considering the relatively large discrepancy when using this method compared with that obtained with the MODIS LST product (>4.0 K). Overall, in this study, the SW-TES method was extended, and the performance was comprehensively evaluated at the global scale, which may help in facilitating its potential applications.

Abstract:Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) has been widely used in related aerosol studies because of its long data records. However, operational aerosol optical depth (AOD) products at coarse spatial resolutions limit their applications on small and medium scales. Thus, high-spatial-resolution AOD products are needed. In this paper, a regionally robust high-resolution aerosol retrieval algorithm is developed for MODIS images over Eastern China which has complex surfaces and severe air pollution. Several major challenges in aerosol retrieval are resolved including: 1) surface reflectance by correcting for the effects of surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function using the RossThick-LiSparse model; 2) aerosol models assumed by time-series data analysis with historical aerosol optical properties measurements from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sites; and 3) cloud screening using the proposed universal dynamic threshold cloud detection algorithm. Moreover, gas (i.e., ozone and water vapor) absorption is also corrected. Finally, our AOD retrievals are compared with the newest AERONET Version 3 Level 2.0 AOD ground-based measurements, latest MODIS Collection 6.1 AOD products at 3- and 10-km resolutions, and multiangle implementation of the atmospheric correction (MAIAC) AOD product at a 1-km resolution. The results suggest that our algorithm performs well over dark vegetated and bright urban surfaces and that 78.56% of the retrievals meet the acceptable expected error of ±(0.05% + 20%) with a mean absolute error and a root-mean-square error of 0.074 and 0.125, respectively. Comparison results indicate that the newly generated 1-km AOD data set is much better than the routine MOD04 3- and 10-km dark target data sets, and slightly better than the 10-km deep blue (with lower resolution) and 1-km MAIAC (with narrower space coverage) AOD products. This attests to the robustness of our algorithm that generates an AOD product with a more continuous coverage and finer resolution over complex surfaces.
Atmospheric sensitivity on land surface temperature retrieval using single channel thermal infrared remote sensing data: Comparison among models

Abstract:Atmospheric effect is one of the most important error sources of land surface temperature (LST) retrieval using single channel thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing data. This paper focuses on the theoretical analysis of the atmospheric correction error sensitivity on LST retrieval, which applied on a new TIR remote sensing data of HJ-1B satellite. For this purpose, atmospheric effects on three different methods for LST retrieval are analyzed and compared: the radiant transfer method (RTM), the mono-window algorithm (Qin method) and the generalized single-channel method (JM&S method). The MODTRAN 4 codes are compiled in order to simulate the atmospheric radiance in different situations. Differential equations are built from each LST model by converting the derivatives of atmospheric parameters, then the change rate of the model with respect to the atmospheric variables are exhibited. The results show that for all methods, the increasing of LST error is ensued from the increasing of water vapor content and viewing angle, and aerosols effect on LST is negligible for all methods; JM&S method is most sensitive to water vapor content uncertainty followed by JM and Qin methods, with an error on LST of 0.8K, 0.6K and 0.4K, respectively, on typical condition that water vapor uncertainty is 0.15 g cm-2 with mid-latitude summer atmospheric; for a view angle of 33°, error on LST is lower than 2.3K, 1.9K and 1.1K for JM&S, RTM and Qin method, respectively; Qin method is also sensitive to mean atmospheric temperature, which leads to an error on LST of 0.5K, assuming an atmospheric temperature uncertainty of 0.1K; JM method is still sensitive to effective wavelength, which leads to an error on LST of 0.3K, assuming an wavelength uncertainty of 0.3 μm; Hence, JM&S method is more suitable for the condition that precise water vapor profiles are applied, while Qin method can be more precisely if atmospheric temperature is fully estimated- - . For non-mathematical simplification, RTM could be the most accurate and complex choice if in situ measurement and angular correction of atmospheric are undertook.
Land Surface Temperature Retrieval From Landsat-8 Data With the Generalized Split-Window Algorithm

Abstract:This paper addresses land surface temperature (LST) retrieval from Landsat-8 data using the generalized split-window (GSW) algorithm. First, radiative transfer modeling experiment is conducted using the moderate spectral resolution atmospheric transmittance algorithm and computer model fed with SeeBor V5.0 atmospheric profile database to build a data set of LST related to brightness temperatures in Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) bands 10 and 11, land surface emissivities (LSEs), and total precipitable water (TPW). Then, the GSW algorithm’s coefficients are obtained through linear regression, in which the simulated data are grouped into several sub-ranges to improve the accuracy. The impacts of noise equivalent temperature difference and uncertainty of LSEs and TPW on derived LST are evaluated. Next, the TIRS channels 10 and 11 are inter-calibrated against the channels of infrared atmospheric sounding interferometer on board Metop-B. After that, LST is retrieved from the re-calibrated and clear sky Landsat-8 data using the GSW algorithm, where LSEs are estimated from the measurements of operational land imager on Landsat-8 by the modified normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) based emissivity method, and TPW is extracted from the european centre for medium-range weather forecasts reanalysis data. Finally, the retrieved LST is cross-validated with the MOD11_L2 V6 product. The results show that the GSW algorithm can accurately retrieve LST from Landsat-8 data, and errors mainly come from the uncertainty of LSEs and TPW. Against the MOD11_L2 V6 product, the LST errors are −1.45 ± 0.80 K and −0.49 ± 0.78 K before and after the correction of LSEs and TPW, respectively.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) retrieval from thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing image requires atmospheric and land surface emissivity (LSE) data that are sometimes unattainable. To overcome this problem, a hybrid algorithm is developed to retrieve LST without atmospheric correction and LSE data input, by combining the split-window (SW) and temperature–emissivity separation (TES) algorithms. The SW algorithm is used to estimate surface-emitting radiance in adjacent TIR bands, and such radiance is applied to the TES algorithm to retrieve LST and LSE. The hybrid algorithm is implemented on five TIR bands of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). Analysis shows that the hybrid algorithm can estimate LST and LSE with an error of 0.5–1.5 K and 0.007–0.020, respectively. Moreover, the LST error of the hybrid algorithm is equivalent to that of the original ASTER TES algorithm, involving 1%–2% uncertainty in atmospheric correction. The hybrid algorithm is validated using ground-measured LST at six sites and ASTER LST products, indicating that the temperature difference between the ASTER TES algorithm and the hybrid algorithm is 1.4 K and about 2.5–3.5 K compared to the ground measurement. Finally, the hybrid algorithm is applied to at two places.
An improved dark target method for aerosol optical depth retrieval over China from Himawari-8

Abstract:Himawari-8 (H8), the first of the new generation geostationary meteorological satellites, carries Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) sensor with 16 spectral bands from visible to infrared bands. As the spectral bands of AHI in reflectance bands are similar with MODIS, the Dark Target (DT) aerosol retrieval algorithm could be used for obtaining AOD over land with high temporal resolution from AHI measurements. However, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) which was used as a good indicator of surface spectral reflectance is obviously affected by the solar zenith angle and cannot be ignored for AOD retrieval with geostationary measurements. Collocated AHI Level 1b observations and AERONET AOD less than 0.2 have been input into Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum – Vector (6SV) to calculate the surface reflectance. It can be found that the regression relationships of surface reflectance between visible and shortwave infrared channel are obviously different over different observation sites, even the NDVI is the same. In this study, AHI/H8 AOD over land was retrieved through improving the estimation of surface reflectance relationship by taking into account the land cover, NDVI and scattering angle.This approach has been applied to the AHI/H8 observations in 2018; the global AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) and China Aerosol Research Network (CARSNET) ground-based AOD observations were used to evaluate the quality of AOD retrievals. The comparison results have shown that H8 AODs have good agreement with the ground-based measurements with R larger than 0.8 (N > 1500), and it is even up to 0.95 at Xianghe site. Validation with CARSNET has shown that the performance of H8 AOD is better in the morning than that in the afternoon. The AOD retrieval deviations have been found at those sites located at barren and mixed pixels. When compared with JAXA H8 AOD, it is found that the performance of AOD of this work is better than JAXA H8 AOD at most ground observation sites. More importantly, the AOD product of this work can better depicts the diurnal variation, a unique feature that the new generation geostationary satellite measurements can provide.

Abstract:Gaofen 4 (GF-4) is a geostationary satellite, with a panchromatic and multispectral sensor (PMS) onboard, and has great potential in observing atmospheric aerosols. In this study, we developed an aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval algorithm for the GF-4 satellite. AOD retrieval was realized based on the pre-calculated surface reflectance database and 6S radiative transfer model. We customized the unique aerosol type according to the long time series aerosol parameters provided by the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) site. The solar zenith angle, relative azimuth angle, and satellite zenith angle of the GF-4 panchromatic multispectral sensor image were calculated pixel-by-pixel. Our 1 km AOD retrievals were validated against AERONET Version 3 measurements and compared with MOD04 C6 AOD products at different resolutions. The results showed that our GF-4 AOD algorithm had a good robustness in both bright urban areas and dark rural areas. A total of 71.33% of the AOD retrievals fell within the expected errors of ±(0.05% + 20%); root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) were 0.922 and 0.122, respectively. The accuracy of GF-4 AOD in rural areas was slightly higher than that in urban areas. In comparison with MOD04 products, the accuracy of GF-4 AOD was much higher than that of MOD04 3 km and 10 km dark target AOD, but slightly worse than that of MOD04 10 km deep blue AOD. For different values of land surface reflectance (LSR), the accuracy of GF-4 AOD gradually deteriorated with an increase in the LSR. These results have theoretical and practical significance for aerosol research and can improve retrieval algorithms using the GF-4 satellite.
