Abstract:Ultrasound (US)-assisted electrochemical oxidation (EO) has previously demonstrated its ability to degrade perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, the mechanisms of direct electron transfer and indirect oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as the involvement of these ROS, are unclear, particularly with the peroxydisulfate (PDS) electrolyte and the added effect of US. In this study, an US/EO/PDS system was first investigated, achieving nearly 100 % and 80.01 % defluorination for PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonate, respectively (within 3 h). This US/EO/PDS system exhibited remarkable stability, pH tolerance, and practicality. Further experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the predominant mechanism of PFOA defluorination was indirect oxidation via ROS, rather than direct oxidation at the anode. Although none of these ROS could initiate the degradation of PFOA without additional energy, both ROS (SO center dot(4) > center dot OH > O-1(2) > O center dot(2)) and US/EO contributed to the initial step of PFOA defluorination. Furthermore, US enhanced the generation of ROS and the direct oxidation (electron transfer) ability of EO. The electrons were transferred from PFOA to PDS via the electrode assembly. This study clarified, for the first time, the synergistic effect of US/EO/PDS and the involvement of direct and indirect ROS oxidation in defluorination of PFOA, which shows potential for developing US and EO technology for complete degradation of polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an artificially synthesized perfluorinated chemical widely used in industries. It is often released into the environment without treatment, which causes pollution in groundwater. Recently, we have reported a rapid and efficient removal of PFOA in aqueous solution by using a fountain-strip dielectric barrier discharge reactor (SF-DBD). This design allows for the gaseous-liquid interaction to happen in a large space at atmospheric pressure, so it is a promising method to efficiently remove PFOA from water. Recently, we reported the effects of the process parameters, including power mode, pulse time, sinusoidal wave discharge, the discharge gas, initial concentration, pH, conductivity, and positive and negative discharges, on the efficiency of this method for PFOA degradation. Understanding the reaction mechanism is key to further improve the efficiency of the system. In this work, we reported the decomposition mechanism of the SF-DBD for PFOA degradation. The mass spectrum (MS) showed that PFOA was degraded to perfluoroheptanoic acid, perfluorohexanoic acid, perfluoropentanoic acid, perfluorobutanoic acid, perfluoropropionic acid, and trifluoroacetic acid after the plasma treatment. The optical emission spectroscope (OES) and the radical scavenger experiments indicated that the excited argon atoms and hydroxyl radicals played a major role in PFOA degradation, while the contributions from the solvated electrons (e(aq)(-)), superoxide anion radical (center dot O2-), and singlet oxygen (1O(2)) were negligible in initiating the cleavage reaction.

Abstract:Ultrasound (US) can degrade per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by the cavitation or pyrolysis effect. In this study, we find that the US equipment typically used in a common laboratory, such as 20 kHz and 43 kHz for cleaning or homogenisation, can degrade PFAS, although the process is slow (with approximately 14.6% and 20.1% defluorination after 6 h, respectively). To accelerate the degradation process, a dual-frequency US is combined with persulfate (PS) to synergistically degrade PFAS in water and soil. Typical PFAS including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (6:2 FTS) are used to evaluate the degradation performance of dual-frequency US/PS in water. After 6 h of degradation, the defluorination percentage is, from highest to lowest, PFOA (100 +/- 1.2%) > 6:2 FTS (86.9 +/- 0.9%) > PFOS (46.5 +/- 1.0%). Interestingly, the dual-frequency US/PS process can also efficiently degrade PFAS in the contaminated soil, with a 62-71% degradation of 14 PFAS (28 is the maximum number of PFAS that can be quantitatively monitored), representing an encouraging progress. Finally, the degradation pathways and kinetics of PFOA are studied by monitoring the degradation intermediates, and by indicating the combination of the dual-frequency US/PS is not simply addition with each other, but with a synergistic effect of degradation.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an emerging contaminant of concern due to its toxicity for human health and ecosystems. However, successful degradation of PFOA in aqueous solutions with a cost-effective method remains a challenge, especially for groundwater. In this study, the degradation of PFOA using activated persulfate under mild conditions was investigated. The impact of different factors on persulfate activity, including pH, temperature (25 degrees C-50 degrees C), persulfate dosage and reaction time, was evaluated under different experimental conditions. Contrary to the traditional alkaline-activated persulfate oxidation, it was found that PFOA can be effectively degraded using activated persulfate under acidic conditions, with the degradation kinetics following the pseudo-first-order decay model. Higher temperature, higher persulfate dosage and increased reaction time generally result in higher PFOA degradation efficiency. Experimental results show that a PFOA degradation efficiency of 89.9% can be achieved by activated persulfate at pH of 2.0, with the reaction temperature of 50 degrees C, molar ratio of PFOA to persulfate as 1: 100, and a reaction time of 100 h. The corresponding defluorination ratio under these conditions was 23.9%, indicating that not all PFOA decomposed via fluorine removal. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer analysis results indicate that both SO4-center dot and center dot OH contribute to the decomposition of PFOA. It is proposed that PFOA degradation occurs via a decarboxylation reaction triggered by SO4-center dot, followed by a HF elimination process aided by center dot OH, which produces one-CF2-unit-shortened perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs, Cn-1F2n-1COOH). The decarboxylation and HF elimination processes would repeat and eventually lead to the complete mineralization all PFCAs.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of artificial compounds comprised of a perfluoroalkyl main chain and a terminal functional group. With them being applied in a wide range of applications, PFASs have drawn increasing regulatory attention and research interests on their reductions and treatments due to their harmful effects on environment and human beings. Among numerous studies, chemical treatments (e.g., photochemical, electrochemical, and thermal technologies) have been proved to be important methods to degradation PFASs. However, the pathways and mechanisms for the degradation of PFASs through these chemical methods still have not been well documented. This article therefore provides a comprehensive review on the degradation mechanisms of two important PFASs (perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)) with photochemical, electrochemical and thermal methods. Different decomposition mechanisms of PFOA and PFOS are reviewed and discussed. Overall, the degradation pathways of PFASs are associated closely with their head groups and chain lengths, and H/F exchange and chain shortening were found to be predominant degradation mechanisms. The clear study on the degradation mechanisms of PFOA and PFOS should be very useful for the complete degradation or mineralization of PFASs in the future.

Abstract:Thermally activated persulfate is a promising oxidant for in situ remediation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), yet a comprehensive understanding of the degradation mechanism is still lacking. In this study, we used density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental data to map entire reaction pathways for the degradation of PFOA by persulfate, with specific considerations on the influence of pH. The DFT results showed that the rate-limiting step was the first electron abstraction from PFOA, yet the generation of SO4•- from the decomposition of persulfate contributed a large part of the free energy of activation (ΔG‡) for the overall reaction. The subsequent steps did not contribute to the ΔG‡. For the electron abstraction from PFOA, we investigated reactions using protonated and deprotonated species of PFOA and SO4•- and showed that the reaction of anionic PFOA with HSO4• was most favorable with a ΔG‡ of 7.2 kJ/mol. This explains why low pH (<3.5) is a sine qua non condition for the degradation of PFOA by persulfate. The overall ΔG‡ derived theoretically based on the pathway involved HSO4• was consistent with the ΔG‡ determined experimentally. This study provides valuable insight into remediation strategies that include persulfate as an oxidizing agent for perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids.

Abstract:Numerous studies have demonstrated the degradation of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by advanced oxidation or reduction processes. Howbeit, the current literature lacks a comprehensive and comparative overview of the various degradation pathways and mechanisms. This systematic review compiles and analyzes the mechanisms and degradation pathways of PFAS by persulfate activation, photocatalysis, UV/sulfite, electron beam, electrochemical oxidation, plasma, ozonation, and sonochemical oxidation. We found that the degradation pathways of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and Perfluoroalkanesulfonic acids (PFSAs) were investigated more than any other PFAS. This review implies that the defluorination and degradation pathways of PFAS are reliant on the type of dominant reactive oxidant or reductive species. For instance, holes usually oxidize PFAS to unstable perfluoroalkyl radicals accompanied by losing head groups, whereas hydroxyl and superoxide radicals cleave CC and C-F bonds. On the other hand, hydrated electrons directly eliminate the head group followed by releasing CF 2 units. Furthermore, the imposed crystal facets and functional groups of the introduced catalytic surfaces in the case of heterogeneous catalysis (e.g., photocatalysts) affected the degradation pathways and defluorination rates by anchoring PFAS molecules from the head groups (e.g., carboxylate and sulfonate group). This study lays the groundwork for future research to analyze and elucidate the transformation products and pathways of PFAS in various treatment systems.

Abstract:This study investigates an electrochemical approach for the treatment of water polluted with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), looking at the impact of different variables, contributions from generated radicals, and degradability of different structures of PFAS. Results obtained from a central composite design (CCD) showed the importance of mass transfer, related to the stirring speed, and the amount of charge passed through the electrodes, related to the current density on decomposition rate of PFOA. The CCD informed optimized operating conditions which we then used to study the impact of solution conditions. Acidic condition, high temperature, and low initial concentration of PFOA accelerated the degradation kinetic, while DO had a negligible effect. The impact of electrolyte concentration depended on the initial concentration of PFOA. At low initial PFOA dosage (0.2 mg L-1), the rate constant increased considerably from 0.079 ± 0.001 to 0.259 ± 0.019 min-1 when sulfate increased from 0.1% to 10%, likely due to the production of SO4•-. However, at higher initial PFOA dosage (20 mg L-1), the rate constant decreased slightly from 0.019 ± 0.001 to 0.015 ± 0.000 min-1, possibly due to the occupation of active anode sites by excess amount of sulfate. SO4•- and •OH played important roles in decomposition and defluorination of PFOA, respectively. PFOA oxidation was initiated by one electron transfer to the anode or SO4•-, undergoing Kolbe decarboxylation where yielded perfluoroalkyl radical followed three reaction pathways with •OH, O2 and/or H2O. PFAS electrooxidation depended on the chemical structures where the decomposition rate constants (min-1) were in the order of 6:2 FTCA (0.031) > PFOA (0.019) > GenX (0.013) > PFBA (0.008). PFBA with a shorter chain length and GenX with -CF3 branching had slower decomposition than PFOA. While presence of C-H bonds makes 6:2 FTCA susceptible to the attack of •OH accelerating its decomposition kinetic. Conducting experiments in mixed solution of all studied PFAS and in natural water showed that the co-presence of PFAS and other water constituents (organic and inorganic matters) had adverse effects on PFAS decomposition efficiency.
Pathophysiology of Brain Iron

Abstract:Introduction: The role of iron stored in the human brain has been studied for more than 120 years. As described by Koeppen a German researcher, S. S. Zaleski, reported in 1886 on the presence of a remarkable level of iron present in the human brain. Working with a single autopsied brain he made several observations that have stood the test of time: (i) the majority of the iron was not present as inorganic iron salts such as iron chloride, but was bound to organic molecules, (ii) unlike in the blood, the iron was not bound to hemoglobin, (iii) the iron was predominately in the ferric not the ferrous oxidation state and (iv) the iron was more concentrated in the gray matter rather than the white matter of the brain. In subsequent decades this work was confirmed and extended, particularly by the German pathologist Hugo Spatz. He stained brain tissue by immersing it in hydrochloric acid followed by potassium ferrocyanide (Perls' stain or the Prussian Blue stain) to produce bright blue precipitates in brain regions with high ferric iron concentrations. Using brains from normal subjects he demonstrated strong concentrations of ferric iron in the deep brain nuclei of the extrapyramidal motor system including the globus pallidus, the caudate nucleus, the red nucleus, the dentate nucleus and the substantia nigra. Later studies revealed that iron concentrations with a specific pattern of distribution are present in all normal brains. Iron deposits are particularly prominent in the deep brain nuclei (globus pallidus, putamen, caudate, substantia nigra, red nucleus, dentate nucleus) but are found in the white matter and cortex as well. These deposits are minimal at birth and gradually increase over the first three decades of life after which they tend to plateau. The role of these iron deposits in brain function is not yet entirely clear. One influential hypothesis has linked them to the process of myelination of the white matter tracts. Following the introduction of high-field (1.5 tesla) MRI whole-body imaging n the early 1980s, brain iron research entered a new era when B. P Drayer and his colleagues reported that T2-weighted MR images showed markedly decreased signal intensities (hypointensities) in the same brain regions that had previously been identified in autopsy studies as having high iron concentrations. It was soon demonstrated that this iron-dependent contrast mechanism became more prominent at higher field strengths. The availability of high-field MRI has made it possible to study brain iron non-invasively in living human subjects and has greatly expanded the knowledge of its role in brain physiology and pathology. In recent years brain iron has become a very active area of neuroscience research. Searching the PubMed database for the year 2008 returns 342 papers containing the phrase 'brain iron.' Therefore, at the present time there is well over one paper being published in this area each working day. MRI studies are partly responsible for this high level of research activity, but an equal, or greater activity is currently present in the fields of iron biochemistry and cellular biology. Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has raised significant health concerns due to its high ecotoxicological risks and difficulties in removal by conventional water treatment process. Previous studies have demonstrated that photocatalytic techniques exhibit great potential in PFOA removal. However, the underlying mechanism of the degradation process has not been fully understood, particularly the contribution of the facet effects of catalysts. In this study, a combination of experiments and first-principles calculations were conducted to shed light on the facet-dependence of the interfacial interactions and oxidation during the PFOA degradation process. We proved that the interfacial interaction was essential in initiating the hole-dominated degradation process, and the {110}R3̅c facet of hexagonal In2O3 features the strongest interaction with PFOA. The overall defluorination rate was mainly controlled by the hole-dominated oxidation processes under UV irradiation, which were further attributed to the electronic structures and reaction site distributions of different In2O3 surfaces. This study provides molecular-level insights on the facet-dependent PFOA catalytic degradation process, which can guide the rational design of photocatalysts to achieve superior decontamination efficiency.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a synthetic organic compound widely used in commercial and industrial products. Due to its high persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicological properties, PFOA poses a serious risk to human health and the natural environment. Photocatalysis, as a clean energy technology for the potential removal of PFOA, has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, the efficiency of the photodegradation of PFOA is limited mainly due to three reasons: (i) low light utilization, (ii) rapid electron-hole recombination, and (iii) low utilization of photogenerated carriers. Therefore, this review aims to provide a systematic summary based on current state-of-the-art approaches to designing and fabricating semiconductor photocatalysts to improve the rate of PFOA degradation. Specifically, the fundamental mechanism of photodegradation processes is first introduced, followed by a review of the improvement approaches for enhanced visible-light absorption of photocatalysts, inhibition of electron-hole recombination, and utilization of photogenerated carriers. In addition, this review discusses the principal effects of different semiconductor modifications on their performance in photodegradation systems. Finally, a summary and outlook on the challenges and future directions of semiconductor photocatalysis in practical water treatment are provided. This review contributes to understanding photodegradation mechanisms, promoting photocatalyst development, and opening a pathway for the sustainable treatment of PFOA in water.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid is ubiquitous in water bodies and is detrimental to the health of organisms. Effectively removing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a persistent organic pollutant, has been a hot topic around the world. With traditional physical, chemical, and biological methods, it is difficult to effectively and completely remove PFOA, the costs are high, and it is easy to cause secondary pollution. There are difficulties in applying some technologies. Therefore, more efficient and green degradation technologies have been sought. Photochemical degradation has been shown to be a low-cost, efficient, and sustainable technique for PFOA removal from water. Photocatalytic degradation technology offers great potential and prospects for the efficient degradation of PFOA. Most studies on PFOA have been conducted under ideal laboratory conditions at concentrations that are higher than those detected in real wastewater. This paper summarizes the research status of the photo-oxidative degradation of PFOA, and it summarizes the mechanism and kinetics of PFOA degradation in different systems, as well as the influence of key factors on the photo-oxidative degradation and defluoridation process, such as system pH, photocatalyst concentration, etc. PFOA photodegradation technology's existing problems and future work directions are also presented. This review provides a useful reference for future research on PFOA pollution control technology.

New insights into the degradation mechanism and risk assessment of HFPO-DA by advanced oxidation processes based on activated persulfate in aqueous solutions

Abstract:Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) is widely used as a substitute for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). HFPO-DA exhibits high water solubility and low adsorption potential, conferring significant fluidity in aquatic environments. Given that the toxicity of HFPO-DA is similar to PFOA, it is necessary to control its content in aquatic environments. Electrochemical and thermally-activated persulfates have been successfully used to degrade HFPO-DA, but UV-activated persulfates cannot degrade the compound. Given that research on degradation mechanisms is still incomplete and lacks kinetic research, the mechanism and kinetic calculations of oxidative degradation were studied in detail using DFT calculations. And the toxicity of HFPO-DA degradation intermediates and products was evaluated to reveal the feasibility of using advanced oxidation process (AOP) technology based on persulfate to degrade HFPO-DA in wastewater. The results showed that the committed step of HFPO-DA degradation was initiated by the electron transfer reaction of SO4•- radicals. This reaction is not spontaneous at room temperature and requires sufficient electrical or thermal energy to be absorbed from the external environment. The perfluoroalcohol produced during this reaction can subsequently undergo four possible reactions: H atom abstraction from alcohol groups by an OH radical; H atom abstraction by SO4•-; direct HF removal; and HF removal with water as the catalyst. The final degradation products of HFPO-DA mainly include CO2, CF3CF2COOH, CF3COOH, FCOOH and HF, which has been identified through previous experimental analysis. Ecotoxicity assessment indicates that degradation does not produce highly toxic intermediates, and that the final products are non-toxic, supporting the feasibility of persulfate-based AOP technologies.

Abstract:The antibiotics of the aminoglycoside group are all potentially nephrotoxic. Aminoglycosides are exclusively excreted via the kidneys by glomerular filtration. On passing the proximal tubular cells of the nephron, an active reabsorption and intracellular concentration, 10-20 times the serum concentration, take place. Aminoglycosides are trapped in the lysozymes and inhibit cell metabolism. Functional changes are at first discrete, comprising polyuria, slight proteinuria, enzymuria and glycosuria. With more progressive changes the glomerular filtration rate decreases, followed by increased blood urea and serum-creatinine. The urine contains protein, casts and shedded tubular cells. Ultimately, but rarely, oligo-anuric renal failure may be encountered. Compared with gentamicin, the newer aminoglycosides, amikacin, tobramycin and netilmicin show in animal experiments a decreasing nephrotoxicity in the mentioned order. Extensive studies have demonstrated that netilmicin may be the drug with the least nephrotoxic potential. Clinical studies confirm that netilmicin is less nephrotoxic than gentamicin and compares favourably with tobramycin and amikacin. A survey of the literature is given.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoate and perfluoroctanesulfonate (PFOX) are environmentally persistent, recalcitrant to oxidation, and resistant to conventional chemical treatments. The related studies on the exploration and establishment of the effective removal techniques for PFOX have become the new hotspot to the degradation of organic pollutants in the field of environmental technology. Recently, highly active oxidation methods for the efficient degradation of PFOX were developed through the promotion effect of various physical processes on the oxidation ability of conventional chemical methods. So this paper reviews the concerned reports which employed the single chemical oxidation approach and the coupling techniques of physical processes and chemical oxidation for the removal of PFOX. The coupling effects of physical methods and chemical oxidation processes can result in photolysis, electrolysis, pyrolysis, sonolysis, plasma-induced oxidation, microwave-induced oxidation, or mechanochemistry destruction of PFOX. For each coupling physicochemical techniques, the mechanism of the oxidative reaction, the detailed degradation pathway of PFOX, the effect of various influential factors on reaction process as well as the removal efficiency and energy consumption are summarized in this paper. It is also introduced for the progress on these above studies and further discussion about current problems for these techniques. In addition, the future trends for the development of these techniques to PFOX degradation are prospected for their practicality.

Abstract:The electrochemical oxidation method is a promising technology for the degradation of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). However, the elimination processes of PFOS are still unknown, including the electron transfer pathway, key reactive sites, and degradation mechanism. Here, we fabricated diatomite and cerium (Ce) co-modified Sb2O3 (D-Ce/Sb2O3) anode to realize efficient degradation of PFOS via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The transferred electron and the generated hydroxyl radical (•OH) can high-effectively decompose PFOS. The electron can be rapidly transferred from the highest occupied molecular orbital of the PFOS to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the PMS via the D-Ce/Sb2O3 driven by a potential energy difference under electrochemical process. The active site of Ce-O in the D-Ce/Sb2O3 can greatly reduce the migration distance of the electron and the •OH, and thus improving the catalytic activity for degrading various organic micropollutants with high stability. In addition, the electrochemical process shows strong resistance and tolerance to the changing pH, inorganic ions, and organic matter. This study offers insights into the electron transfer pathway and PMS activation mechanism in PFOS removal via electrochemical oxidation, paving the way for its potential application in water purification.

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been identified as the most toxic specie of the family of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs). It has been widely distributed and frequently detected in environmental wastewater. The compound's unique features such as inherent stability, rigidity, and resistance to harsh chemical and thermal conditions, due to its multiple and strong C-F bonds have resulted in its resistance to conventional wastewater remediations. Photolysis and bioremediation methods have been proven to be inefficient in their elimination, hence this article presents intensive literature studies and summarized findings reported on the application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and photocatalytic degradation techniques as the best alternatives for the PFOA elimination from wastewater. Techniques of persulfate, photo-Fenton, electrochemical, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic degradation have been explored and their mechanisms for the degradation and defluorination of the PFOA have been demonstrated. The major advantage of AOPs techniques has been centralized on the generation of active radicals such as sulfate (SO4•-) hydroxyl (•OH). While for the photocatalytic process, photogenerated species (electron (e) and holes (h + vb)) initiated the process. These active radicals and photogenerated species possessed potentiality to attack the PFOA molecule and caused the cleavage of the C-C and C-F bonds, resulting in its efficient degradation. Shorter-chain PFCAs have been identified as the major intermediates detected and the final stage entails its complete mineralization to carbon dioxide (CO2) and fluoride ion (F-). The prospects and challenges associated with the outlined techniques have been highlighted for better understanding of the subject matter for the PFOA elimination from real wastewaters.

Abstract:Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are a category of persistent, non-degradable pollutants that are widespread in the environment and in humans. They have attracted considerable attention due to their high bioaccumulation, multiple toxicities, long-term stability, and, in particular, their effects on human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need for highly efficient technologies and systematic mechanisms for the degradation of PFOS and PFOA. Therefore, we summarize four mainstream technologies for the degradation of PFOS and PFOA in water and their research progress in this review, namely adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, microbial treatment, and membrane separation. Among them, adsorption technology is the earliest and relatively mature, the advanced oxidation process has relatively high treatment efficiency, there are deep and broad development prospects for microbial treatment in the future, and membrane separation technology can recycle raw materials and help to save resources. Based on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the existing technologies, the development prospect of reasonable optimization technology is prospected, with a view to providing a practical scientific reference for the research and engineering practice of PFOS and PFOA pollution control in China.

Abstract:The global elimination and restriction of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), respectively, have urged manufacturers to shift production to their substitutes which still pose threat to the environment with their bioaccumulation, toxicity and migration issues. In this context, efficient technologies and systematic mechanistic studies on the degradation of PFOA/PFOS substitutes are highly desirable. In this review, we summarize the progress in degrading PFOA/PFOS substitutes, including four kinds of mainstream methods. The pros and cons of the present technologies are analyzed, which renders the discussion of future prospects on rational optimizations. Additional discussion is made on the differences in the degradation of various kinds of substitutes, which is compared to the PFOA/PFOS and derives designing principles for more degradable F-containing compounds.
