Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between cultural sensitivity and effectiveness levels among nursing students. Background: The world is changing and globalizing, and societies are becoming increasingly multicultural. Therefore, nurses, who play an important role in health service delivery, are expected to be competent in interacting with patients from different cultures and to develop cultural sensitivity during their education. Design: The design of this study is a prospective descriptive study. Methods: The research was conducted with 284 nursing students in the faculty of nursing at a university in Ankara. The data collection process of this study was conducted at the end of the spring semester of the 2019-2020 academic year between 20 and 30 June 2020. The Sociodemographic Characteristics Form, Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, and Intercultural Effectiveness Scale were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, parametric and nonparametric tests were used for data analysis. Results: The mean age of the students was 20.80 ± 1.64, and 82% of the students were female. The mean scores on the Intercultural Sensitivity and Intercultural Effectiveness Scales were 92.56 ± 11.98 and 53.87 ± 6.28, respectively. A positive, moderate, and statistically significant correlation was found between the scores on the two scales. In the study, it was determined that females have higher cultural sensitivity and cultural effectiveness level than males, and students who could not understand and speak English have lower cultural sensitivity and cultural effectiveness level than students who could understand and speak English. Conclusion: In this study, it was evaluated that the nursing students had high cultural sensitivity and moderate cultural effectiveness levels, and cultural sensitivity levels were found to increase in line with cultural effectiveness levels. It is recommended to review the educational curricula to improve cultural communication competence and organize programs to improve English speaking and conduct more studies examining the cultural effectiveness of students.
Association between cultural intelligence and cultural sensitivity in nursing students: A cross-sectional descriptive study

Abstract:Background Because of the multicultural composition of the Turkish population, healthcare providers encounter and serve individuals from various cultural backgrounds. Aim To determine the relationship between cultural sensitivity and cultural intelligence levels among nursing students. Methods This study was performed with 336 students attending the Nursing Department of a state university in Turkey. Data were collected using a sociodemographic data form, the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale, and the Cultural Intelligence Scale. Results Mean age of the Nursing Department students was 20 ± 1.76 years. Mean total scores on the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale and Cultural Intelligence Scale were 90.49 ± 12.68 (maximum 120) and 95 ± 15.8 (maximum 140), respectively. Total scores in both the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale and the Cultural Intelligence Scale were higher among those nursing students who had encounters with people with different cultural backgrounds for any reason and those who wanted to work abroad. The nursing students’ Intercultural Sensitivity Scale and Cultural Intelligence Scale total scores were positively correlated (p < .001). Conclusion Intercultural sensitivity increased with higher cultural intelligence. Enhancing nursing education with programs that improve the students’ cultural sensitivity and cultural intelligence will help them to successfully manage cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate care in their nursing practice.

Predisposing Factors of Intercultural Sensitivity Among Nursing Students: A Predictive Correlational Design

Abstract:Introduction: Intercultural sensitivity in health care improves health care quality due to effective communication, intervention, and increased satisfaction. The present study aimed to compare the intercultural sensitivity of undergraduate nursing students in two different countries and identify predisposing factors of intercultural sensitivity. Methods: A predictive correlational study was conducted with 980 undergraduate nursing students at a university in Turkey and the United States. A questionnaire and the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale were used for data collection. Results: Multiple linear regression revealed that the country in which nursing students were studying, and speaking a second language were found as significant predictors of intercultural sensitivity in the current study. The findings of the two-way variance analysis indicated that the interaction effect between nursing students in two schools and sociodemographic variables was not statistically significant (p > .05). Discussion: Nursing students from both universities presented a moderate level of intercultural sensitivity. This level is low compared with previous results reported in the literature. The study findings may help faculty administrators make new arrangements in the nursing curriculum and contribute to providing equal, and non-discriminatory health services to people. Intercultural education programs within the curriculum should be offered as independent courses and/or integrated within courses to develop culturally competent knowledge, awareness, and skills throughout undergraduate nursing education.
Turkish Validity and Reliability of the Individual Cultural Values Scale on Nurses

Abstract:Background Nurses need to understand their own cultures in order to care for patients in ways that are based on the cultural structure of the patient, which means to the patient’s cultural values and beliefs. Aim This study was conducted in Turkey, and the aim of the study was to test the Turkish validity and reliability of the Individual Cultural Values Scale (CVSCALE) for nurses. Methods This research was a methodological study. The sample of the research was composed of 256 nurses. The reliability and validity analyses were performed such as additivity, Cronbach’s alpha, response bias, language, content, and construct validity. Ethical approval was obtained for the research. Results The content validity index of the scale was .91. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, it was determined that the model had a good fit, and five dimensions of the scale were confirmed. The internal consistencies of subscales, except those for power distance and masculinity, were very reliable. The test–retest correlations were found to be very high for the CVSCALE. Conclusion The Turkish form of the Individual Cultural Values Scale that was conducted on nurses had acceptable levels of validity and reliability. Measuring culture at the individual level is important for transcultural nursing, and it will contribute the creation of nursing policies in Turkey.
The mediating role of intercultural communication apprehension in the relationship between ethnocentrism and attitude towards asylum-seekers of nursing students

Abstract:Background: In order to provide culturally appropriate care, nursing students' intercultural communication anxiety, ethnocentrism and attitudes towards refugees should be examined. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship among ethnocentrism and attitudes towards refugees in nursing students and to determine whether intercultural communication apprehension could mediate the relationship between ethnocentrism and attitude towards asylum-seekers. Design: A cross-sectional, descriptive design. Participants: 226 nursing students in Turkey. Methods: Data were collected using ethnocentrism, intercultural communication apprehension, and attitudes towards asylum-seekers scales and analyzed with Pearson's correlation coefficient and Baron and Kenny's three-regression analysis and Sobel test. Results: Ethnocentrism was positively associated with both intercultural communication apprehension and attitudes towards asylum-seekers scale. Intercultural communication apprehension was positively associated with attitudes towards asylum-seekers scale. Intercultural communication apprehension mediated the relationship between ethnocentrism and attitudes towards asylum-seekers (Z = 4.0497, p < 0.001). Conclusion: In line with these results, intercultural communication apprehension was a crucial mediator between ethnocentrism and attitudes towards asylum-seekers. Interventions to improve intercultural communication apprehension of nursing students should include nursing students' ethnocentrism and attitude towards refugees.

Abstract:Journal of Transcultural Nursing, Ahead of Print. Background:The aim of this study was to evaluate the attitude of nursing students in providing health care to refugees due to cultural differences and to reveal individual factors (age, gender, marital status) affecting negative attitudes.Method:This cross-sectional descriptive correlational study was conducted to determine the intercultural competence of nursing students and their attitudes toward immigrants in Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 316 nursing students.Results:The Negative Attitude Toward Immigrants Scale scores of the participants were high, however, the intercultural competence level of the health professionals was positive. A weak negative statistically significant relationship was found the Negative Attitude Toward Immigrants Scale and the Cross-Cultural Competence of Healthcare Professionals Scale (r = −.247, p = .000).Conclusion:Our study revealed that nursing students have negative attitudes toward immigrants, and factors such as gender and caring for patients from a different ethnic origin, discomfort in providing care impacted their attitudes.

Abstract:Background Although the literature includes studies on nursing students' ethical sensitivity and compassion competence, no study has examined and compared these skills among nursing students from different cultures. Aim This research determined and compared the ethical sensitivity and compassion competency levels of nursing students in two different geographies, one in Turkey (Group I) and one in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (Group II), which hosts students with different cultural characteristics. Design Quantitative and cross-sectional research. Method The research was conducted with 201 nursing students in Group I and Group II, who were studying in the English Nursing program at the Nursing Faculties, received clinical practice training, took ethics in nursing courses, and agreed to participate. "Sociodemographic Form," "Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire," and "Compassion Competence Scale" were used to collect data. Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. Results The mean "Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire" scores of nursing students in Group I and Group II are 149.52 (SD 21.13) and 155.63 (SD 25.21), respectively. The mean scores of the nursing students in Group I and Group II on the "Compassion Competence Scale" are 3.88 (SD 0.47) and 4.29 (SD 0.50), respectively. It was determined that the "Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire" and "Compassion Competency Scale" mean scores of the nursing students in Group II were higher than those of the nursing students in Group I, and this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion The moral sensitivity and compassion competence of nursing students at the two universities were high. When the scores of the groups were compared, it was observed that the moral sensitivity and compassion competence levels of the nursing students in Group II were statistically significantly higher than those of the nursing students in Group I. The predictors of this were evaluated as to why students chose the nursing department, the country, and the department they liked.

Abstract:Background In this era of rapid globalization, our knowledge regarding the clinical performance perceptions and stress coping behaviors of international students in nursing education is quite limited. The unexplored nature of this topic has the potential to manifest as future clinical challenges. Objective To examine the relationship between international nursing students' perceived self-efficacy in clinical applications and their coping behaviors with stress. Methods Our cross-sectional and correlational study collected data from 117 international nursing students at a state university between June 2022 and July 2023. The data collection tools included the Participant Identification Form, Self-Efficacy in Clinical Performance Scale (SECP), and The Coping Behavior Inventory with Stress Scale for Nursing Students (CBIS-NS). t -test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and Bonferroni test were used for data analysis. Results Students, predominantly Azerbaijani (15.4 %) and 64.1 % female, engaged in practices, mainly in medical (34.2 %) and surgical units (33.3 %). Clinical self-efficacy was high, stress coping moderate. A significant positive link existed between coping behaviors and clinical self-efficacy ( p < 0.05). Those in public health/mental health units (8.12 ± 1.46) had higher self-efficacy than surgical unit peers (6.94 ± 1.71) ( p < 0.05). Satisfied students showed better stress coping ( t = 2.645; p = 0.009). Weak positive links were found between transfer/avoidance coping behaviors and clinical self-efficacy (p < 0.05). Conclusion This study demonstrated a statistically significant positive relationship between international nursing students' perceptions of clinical performance and coping behaviors with stress. Given the rapid globalization of education in the global era, especially in diverse educational and clinical environments with students from different ethnic backgrounds, it is recommended to develop new intervention strategies to enhance students' clinical performances and foster positive coping behaviors with stress.

Abstract:PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to adapt the "Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning Scale" (SCLS), "Simulation Design Scale" (SDS), and "Educational Practices Questionnaire" (EPQ) developed by Jeffries and Rizzolo into Turkish and establish the reliability and the validity of these translated scales.METHODS: A sample of 87 nursing students participated in this study. These scales were cross-culturally adapted through a process including translation, comparison with original version, back translation, and pretesting. Construct validity was evaluated by factor analysis, and criterion validity was evaluated using the Perceived Learning Scale, Patient Intervention Self-confidence/Competency Scale, and Educational Belief Scale.FINDINGS: Cronbach's alpha values were found as 0.77-0.85 for SCLS, 0.73-0.86 for SDS, and 0.61-0.86 for EPQ.CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show that the Turkish versions of all scales are validated and reliable measurement tools.

Abstract:Aim This study aims to adapt the "Nursing Practice Readiness Scale" to Turkish culture, and evaluate its psychometric properties. Background New graduates' nursing practice readiness can impact their work adaptation and performance. Design The research employed a methodological design. Methods Data were collected between May and July 2022. The sample consisted of 436 newly graduated nurses. Content validity, construct validity and criterion validity were evaluated. Reliability was examined with adjusted item‐total correlation, Cronbach's a coefficient, composite‐reliability and split‐half reliability. Results The Turkish version of Nursing Practice Readiness Scale was found to have good content and criterion validity. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, the original five‐factor structure of the scale was also confirmed for the Turkish version. The scale's overall Cronbach's α coefficient was determined to be 0.96, with subscale coefficients ranging from 0.73 to 0.94. The composite reliability values of the subscales were found between 0.75 and 0.94. In split‐half reliability, the correlation coefficient between half was 0.952, with a Spearman–Brown Coefficient (Unequal Length) of 0.976. Conclusions The Turkish version of Nursing Practice Readiness Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool for evaluating the nursing practice readiness of newly graduated nurses.

Abstract:Spiritual care is an important part of holistic care and is at the center of nursing/midwifery care. Nurses/midwives are expected to graduate by receiving adequate training in spiritual care and gaining spiritual care competence during their student days. It is important to evaluate the spiritual care competencies of nursing/midwifery students and to correct the deficiencies, if any. Therefore, a self-assessment tool is needed to increase awareness and knowledge and improve skills and attitudes in the field of spirituality and pastoral care. One of these tools is EPICC (Enhancing Nurses' and Midwives' Competence in Providing Spiritual Care through Innovative Education and Compassionate Care). This EPICC Spiritual Care Education Standard describes the spiritual care competencies expected from undergraduate nursing and midwifery students. For every competence, the learning outcomes are described in aspects of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. This research was conducted with a methodological design to ensure that the Turkish version of the EPICC Spiritual Care Competency Self-Assessment Tool can be used as a reliable and valid measurement tool in nursing research in Turkey. Methodological and cross-sectional research design was used in the research method. The research was carried out with 300 nursing and midwifery students in Turkey. Data were collected using the personal information form and the EPICC Spiritual Care Competency Self-Assessment Tool. The results of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the four-factor structure of the scale. Cronbach's α , item-total correlation, test–retest analysis, and equivalent form analysis showed high reliability. EPICC Spiritual Care Competency Self-Assessment Tool For Student Nurses And Midwives: Turkish Validity And Reliability Study consists of 24 items on a five-point Likert-type scale. The Turkish version of the EPICC Spiritual Care Competency Self-Assessment Tool is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the Spiritual Care Competencies of nursing and midwifery students. Evaluating the Spiritual Care Competencies of nursing and midwifery students is an important issue, it is now possible in Turkey with this scale given its validity and reliability.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Given the importance of cultural diversity in healthcare, the shift from “cultural competence” to “cultural humility” has become crucial. This transition is particularly relevant for nursing students in multiethnic regions, such as Southeastern Anatolia, Turkey, where diverse cultural interactions can significantly impact their professional development and practice. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to determine the cultural humility levels of nursing students. METHODS: This descriptive study was carried out with nursing students in two universities in the Southeastern Anatolia region, where the immigrant population is dense, in Turkey. RESULTS: In this study, the total mean score of the Cultural Humility Scale of the students participating in the research was 70.03±16.01. A significant difference was found between the Cultural Humility scale mean scores of the students and their gender, nationality, native language, experience of going abroad, desire to live in another country, and enjoying spending time with people from different cultures (p < 0.05). Significant positive correlations were determined between the average scores provided by the students on a 0–10 scale, indicating the importance they placed on cultural diversity in nursing education, and both the total score of the Cultural Humility Scale and the mean score of its sub-dimensions (p < 0.01, r = 0.273) CONCLUSION: This study found that the cultural humility level of nursing students living and studying with people from various cultures is sometimes exhibited.

Turkish adaptation of the nursing student academic resilience inventory: A validity and reliability study

Abstract:Background: Due to the stressful nature of nursing education, it is stated that academic resilience is an important skill for students. However, there is no measurement tool to determine nursing students' academic resilience in our country. Objectives: This study was conducted to adapt the nursing student academic resilience inventory to Turkish and determine its validity and reliability. Design: A descriptive, cross-sectional, and methodological design was used. Setting: The study was conducted with nursing students between May 2022 and June 2022. Participants: The study included 250 s, third, and fourth-year nursing students. Methods: The data were collected using a personal information form, the nursing student academic resilience inventory and the resilience scale for nurses. Results: The inventory showed a 6-factor structure, namely optimism, communication, self-esteem/evaluation, self-awareness, trustworthiness, and self-regulation and consisted of 24 items. In confirmatory factor analysis, all factor loads were found to be >0.30. The fit indexes of the inventory were χ2/df = 2.294, GFI = 0.848, IFI = 0.853, CFI = 0.850, RMSEA = 0.072, and SRMR = 0.067. Cronbach's alpha of the total inventory was 0.887. Conclusions: The Turkish version of the nursing student academic resilience inventory was shown to be a valid and reliable measurement tool.
The Effect of Holistic Nursing Competence on Work Engagement, Self-Reflection and Insight in Nurses

Abstract:Journal of Holistic Nursing, Ahead of Print. This study aimed to examine the effects of holistic nursing competence on work engagement, self-reflection and insight in nurses. This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 309 nurses working in Turkey. Data were collected using the "Descriptive Information Form", "Holistic Nursing Competence Scale (HNCS)", "Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES)", and "Self-Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS)". Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. We found that the HNCS had a moderate positive relationship (r = 0.411, p < 0.05) with the UWES, and a weak positive relationship (r = 0.324, p < 0.05) with the SRIS. In the model established by multiple regression analysis, the effect of the HNCS, age, marital status, position, and performing the profession willingly on work engagement explained 33.7% of the variance. In another established model, the effect of the HNCS, gender, and having children on self-reflection and insight explained 11.5% of the variance. Our findings revealed the effect of holistic competence on nurses' positive attitudes about their work engagement and self-reflection in practice. We recommended developing awareness-based programs for nurses to increase their holistic nursing competence.
"A different country, a different language, a different culture…" Educational experiences of international nursing students studying in Turkey: A qualitative study

Abstract:Aim: This study was aimed at investigating the educational experiences of international nursing students in Turkey. Background: Nursing education has now gained an international dimension, which creates an environment where students from different cultures come together. In Turkey, nursing education is expanding internationally due to the increasing number of international students. Design: A descriptive- phenomenological qualitative study. Methods: The study data were collected from nursing students who came to Turkey from 17 different countries between April 2023 and July 2023 to study at a nursing faculty in Turkey using a semi-structured interview form. Of these students, 27 constituted the study sample. The data collected were analyzed using the content analysis. The COREQ checklist was used in reporting the study. Results: Four themes emerged: a) challenges, b) gains, c) support needs and d) recommendations. Among challenges reported by the participating students were language barriers, cultural adjustment issues and lack of social support. As for the gains of being a foreign student, they stated that they experienced intercultural interaction and improved their language skills, independence and self-confidence. In the study, the need for language support, provision of psychological assistance and cultural adaptation support for these students and the importance of practical recommendations such as mentoring programs and orientation trainings to improve their educational experience were emphasized. Conclusion: In conclusion, in this study, the importance of targeted strategies in nursing education in areas such as language support, psychological assistance and cultural adaptation was emphasized, which helps international students to have a successful educational experience. It was also concluded that mentoring programs and orientation trainings could enrich the educational processes of students by facilitating their adaptation to their new environment. This study is notable in the literature in that students from 17 diverse countries share the same program and the same prerequisites.

Abstract:It has become increasingly important to provide equal educational opportunities to all students for quality and sustainable education in classrooms with rapidly increasing diversity. In this context, communication skills, social intelligence and intercultural sensitivity are important competences that can affect teacher performance and efficiency in classrooms. Despite the importance of these competencies, empirical studies examining the relationships between these variables are scarce. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the relationships between teacher candidates' communication skills and their intercultural sensitivity and social intelligence levels through the application of structural equation modeling (SEM). The participants were selected from among the teacher candidates studying at Kütahya Dumlupınar University, a public university in Türkiye, using simple random sampling method. The results indicated that teacher candidates had high levels of communication skills, intercultural sensitivity and social intelligence. In addition, while there was a significant positive relationship between communication skills and intercultural sensitivity level and social intelligence level at low level, there was a significant positive relationship between intercultural sensitivity and social intelligence level at medium level. Furthermore, communication skills and intercultural sensitivity were found to be significant predictors of social intelligence and intercultural sensitivity had a partial mediating role in the relationship between communication skills and social intelligence. In the study, it was concluded that teacher candidates' communication skills predicted social intelligence through intercultural sensitivity.

Abstract:Conclusion In animal species in which T-1824 is firmly bound to the plasma proteins, absorption of dye by the reticulo-endothelial system and other tissues during the “mixing period” is not a significant source of error in measurement of plasma volume with this dye. With T-1824, as well as with other suitable test substances, back-extrapolation of the time concentration curve on a semi-log plot provides satisfactory correction for loss during the mixing period.
The relationship between intercultural sensitivity, ethnocentrism, socio-demographic characteristics and xenophobia in nursing students: A descriptive and multi-centric study

Abstract:Background: Xenophobia plays a pivotal role in influencing the delivery of culturally competent care. Nevertheless, the relationship between intercultural sensitivity, ethnocentrism, socio-demographic characteristics and xenophobia in nursing students remains undetermined. Aim: This study aimed to determine the relationship between intercultural sensitivity, ethnocentrism, socio-demographic characteristics and xenophobia in nursing students. Methods and participants: The study involved 1045 nursing students from six universities in Türkiye. Data were collected using the "Participant Information Form," the "Intercultural Sensitivity Scale," the "Ethnocentrism Scale," and the "Xenophobia Scale." Multiple linear regression was employed for the analysis. Results: Intercultural sensitivity (β = -0.09; p = 0.028) emerged as a negative predictor of xenophobia levels in students, while ethnocentrism (β = 0.17; p = 0.000) was identified as a positive predictor of xenophobia levels. Additionally, socio-demographic characteristics, including age, living in an extended family, academic year, participation in intercultural nursing courses, and interaction with immigrant neighbors, were established as significant predictors of xenophobia. Conclusion: This study revealed a direct correlation between higher intercultural sensitivity and reduced xenophobia, whereas an increase in ethnocentrism was linked to elevated levels of xenophobia. These results offer valuable insights for educators and policymakers to combat xenophobia and design targeted interventions.
Investigation of self-compassion, self-confidence and submissive behaviors of nursing students studying in different curriculums

Abstract:Introduction: Today, nursing education which educates the future members of the nursing profession aims to gain them high self-esteem, selfconfidence and self-compassion, independence, assertiveness and ability to establish good human relations. This aim can only be achieved through a contemporary curriculum supporting students in the educational process and enabling those in charge to make arrangements by taking the characters and needs of each individual into account. Objective: The study aims to investigate self-compassion, self-confidence and submissive behaviours of undergraduate nursing students studying in different curriculums. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional, comparative study was carried out with the 1st- and 4th-year students of the three schools, each of which has a different curriculum: conventional, integrated and Problem Based Learning (PBL). The study data were collected with the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), Self-Confidence Scale (CS) and Submissive Acts Scale (SAS): The data were analyzed through frequency distribution, means, analysis of variance and the significance test for the difference between the two means. Results: The mean scores the participating students obtained from the Self-Compassion, Self-confidence and Submissive Acts Scales were 3.31±0.56, 131.98±20.85 and 36.48±11.43 respectively. The integrated program students' mean self-compassion and self-confidence scores were statistically significantly higher and their mean submissive behaviour scores were lower than were those of the students studying in the other two programs (p<0.05). The analysis of the correlation between the mean scores obtained from the scales revealed that there was a statistically significant relationships between the SCS and CS values (r=0.388, p<0.001), between the SCS and SAS values (r=-0307, p<0.001) and between the CS and SAS values (r=-0325, p<0.001). Conclusion: In line with the study results, it can be said that the participating nursing students tended to display moderate levels of selfcompassion, self-confidence and submissive behaviours, and that the selfcompassion and self-confidence scores of the 4th-year students in the integrated program were higher than were those of the students in the other two programs.
