Abstract:In addition to activity, durability of Pd-based catalysts in a highly corrosive medium has become one of the most important barriers to limit their industrial applications such as low-temperature fuel cell technologies. Here, Rh with a unique capability to resist against oxidation etching was incorporated into Pd-based catalysts to enhance both their activity and durability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This idea was achieved through the synthesis of the Rh-Pd alloy nanodendrites by co-reducing Rh and Pd salt precursors in oleylamine (OAm) containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). In this synthesis, Rh-Pd alloy nanostructures with Rh-Pd atomic ratios from 19 : 1 to 1 : 4 were generated by varying the molar ratios of Rh and Pd salt precursors. Interestingly, this variation of the molar ratios of the precursors from Rh rich to Pd rich would lead to the shape evolution of Rh-Pd alloy from dendritic nanostructures to spherical aggregations. We found that Br- ions derived from CTAB were also indispensible to the production of Rh-Pd alloy nanodendrites. Owing to the addition of highly stable Rh as well as the radical structure with a large number of low-coordinated sites on the arms, Rh-Pd alloy nanodendrites with a Rh-Pd atomic ratio of 4 : 1 (Rh80Pd20) exhibited a substantially enhanced electrocatalytic performance towards ORR with a 5% loss of mass activity during the accelerated stability test for 10 000 cycles compared to similar to 50% loss of the commercial Pt/C (E-TEK).

Abstract:Pd- or Pt-based precious catalysts (PPC) are considered to be the best candidates toward high performance directly ethanol fuel cells (DEFC) applications, owing to their high intrinsic activity for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). However, the current major barrier for their commercialization is incompletely oxidized intermediates (IOI, such as CO) that poison the catalysts to affect the durability of the cells. Meanwhile, deactivated PPC catalyst is difficult to be recycled, thus impairing the economic benefits for the commercial applications. Moreover, because of the side effects of additive corrosion and aging, the carbon and organic binders widely used in current catalyst design would make the interactions of the IOI more complex to accelerate activity loss. Here, we report a Pd/amorphous SrRuO3 (Pd/a-SrRuO3) hybrid film as a promising material to overcome these problems. Perovskite SrRuO3 can effectively generate oxygen-contains (*OH, *OOH) for intermediates oxidation, providing an ideal platform to promote self-cleaning of CO on Pd activity sites. On the other hand, in analogy to typical self-adapting effect of amorphous catalyst in oxygen reduction reaction process, metastable state of amorphous SrRuO3 in this work is expected to prolong the activity adaptation region at the initial stage of cycling. Furthermore, our conceptual framework of directly depositing Pd/a-SrRuO3 film on operational electrode provides an effective solution to avoid the side effects related with carbon and binders, leading to superior reactivation phenomena with 98% efficiency. As a result, our designed Pd/a-SrRuO3 hybrid film exhibits superior EOR activity (4.0 A mg-1 Pd), durability (i-t, 60,000s), self-adapting region (exceeding 400 cycles with ending activity of 3.0 A mg-1 Pd at 1000th cycle), and also a long-term operation (CP) up to 300,000s with 10 times reactivation. This demonstration of a Pd/Pt-based hybrid catalyst with dual-capability of self-cleaning and self-adapting characteristics is an important step towards the development of highly durable EOR catalysts, with an enormous potential to promote practical application of DEFC.

Abstract:Summary Establishing the mean normal prothrombin time (MNPT) from fresh samples for prothrombin ratios and INR often presents difficulty in selection and collection of donors. A set of seven lyophilized normal plasmas has therefore been prepared at the ECAA Central Facility and studied at 143 laboratories in sixteen European states using coagulometers in serial field exercises. All centres tested either the high ISI ECAA rabbit or low ISI ECAA human reference thromboplastin. The MNPT of fresh plasmas and means of the lyophilized samples were closely comparable with most routine rabbit thromboplastins. Using human thromboplastins means with the lyophilized normals were marginally but significantly longer and with the bovine Thrombotest significantly shorter than the MNPT of fresh plasmas causing alterations in INR. There was no appreciable effect on INR of 2.5 and 3.5 when lyophilized normals were substituted for fresh normals with the rabbit reagents.
Self-Optimized Ligand Effect in L1 2 -PtPdFe Intermetallic for Efficient and Stable Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:It is of paramount importance to explore high efficient and stable electrocatalysts toward anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, a new class of ternary (Pt0.9Pd0.1)3Fe intermetallic is developed with excellent performance toward alkaline HOR. Specifically, the Pd-substitution facilitates the formation of L12-Pt3Fe intermetallic at a lower annealing temperature. Electrochemical analysis and density functional theory calculations indicate that the in-situ formed interstitial alloying PdHx during the electrochemical cycle widens the d-band structure of (Pt0.9Pd0.1)3Fe and shifts downward the d-band center toward the Fermi level. The optimized ligand effect from PdHx gives rise to the encouraging activity for alkaline HOR. Meanwhile, a step-by-step monitoring technique and ex situ CO-stripping voltammetry jointly demonstrate that ordered atoms' arrangement of (Pt0.9Pd0.1)3Fe intermetallic contributes to stabilize the local coordination environment and enables the maintenance of the ligand effect from the in situ formed Fe/Fe(OH)x heterostructure. Negligible decay in electrochemical surface areas of (Pt0.9Pd0.1)3Fe intermetallic after a given accelerated durability test confirms the significant advantage in stability over Pt3Fe alloy. Abstract:The development of economically viable anode catalysts for the alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR) has been a long-standing challenge in direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). A series of Pd–Ag nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous carbon were fabricated in this study using a green approach that did not require the use of a surfactant, which exhibited better catalytic properties for AOR. Experiments and DFT calculations reveal that the d-band center of Pd is influenced by both strain and ligand effects, with the ligand effect predominating. The electrochemical studies demonstrated that the composite-optimized Pd–Ag alloy at a Pd/Ag molar ratio of 1:1 was the highest in terms of ethanol oxidation (EOR) and ethylene glycol oxidation (EGOR) catalytic activity. The mass activities of Pd 1 Ag 1 /MC for EOR and EGOR were 7921 mA mg −1 and 11,520 mA mg −1 , respectively, which were 3.77 and 5.3 fold greater than Pd/C. The impressive performance of Pd 1 Ag 1 /MC catalyst could be attributed to the vital roles of the unique mesoporous structure of carbon sphere with abundant self-doping defect and the boosting effect of Ag (benefit from optimized d-band electronic structure and bi-functional mechanism). The present simple method of synthesizing low-cost, easy-to-use, and high-performance catalysts contributes to the exploration of the large-scale practical applications of direct alkaline alcohol fuel cells.

Abstract:We report the fabrication of "Pt-on-PdAg" heterogeneous nanocrystals in the form of trigonal/hexagonal plate (THNPs) and explored their applications in electroxidation of methanol (MOR) in alkaline medium. In particular, PdAg polyhedral nanoparticles are prepared in advance, followed by the addition of Pt salts to allow in situ galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) between them, leading to the formation of Pt nano-islands on PdAg particle surface and the transformation of the overall morphology into trigon/hexagon. The deliberately designed Pt-"PdAg alloy" interface arising from the hybrid structure greatly enriches the absorption sites, showing noticeable structural advantages in MOR electrocatalysis. Particularly, the carbon-supported Pt-on-PdAg THNPs exhibit nearly 30-fold increase in specific activity as compared to that of commercial Pt/C, as well as enhanced reaction kinetics and long-term durability. DFT calculations suggest that the reaction of CH 3 OH oxidation mediated by PtAgPd is energetically more favorable compared to the similar reaction promoted by Pt, which rationalizes the experimental observation that PtAgPd shows the improved catalytic performance. The present study offers a feasible route to construct trimetallic nanocrystals with successful interface engineering, and validates their promising use as fuel cell electrocatalyst from both experimental validation and fundamental insights. It may help enlighten the rational design of heterostructured electrocatalysts with regulated multiple active sites.

Abstract:Rational control of the components of noble metal alloys is paramount for achieving satisfactory electrocatalytic performances. Though transition metals are commonly used to modify noble metals, many potential elements remain to be explored. Here, we interstitially modulate hydrogen atoms into RhPd nanoparticles to boost the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The obtained stable RhPd-H nanoparticles exhibit pronounced alkaline HER activity with a small overpotential of 36.6 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 35.3 mV dec-1. The surface electronic state, bond distance, and coordination number of the Rh and Pd atoms are significantly influenced by the presence of interstitial hydrogen atoms. These modifications give RhPd-H nanoparticles a desirable hydrogen adsorption free energy, thus accelerating the hydrogen gas production. We further demonstrate that the interstitial hydrogen atom modulation strategy to improve the HER activity is universal for other Pd-based alloy nanostructures. This work presents a powerful strategy for designing efficient electrocatalysts for the HER and beyond.
Shape-dependent catalytic properties of electrochemically synthesized PdPt nanoparticles towards alcohols electrooxidation

Abstract:Tuning the composition and structure of alloys is significantly important to unveil their relationship between structure and functions, and thus help to design catalysts with high performance. In this work, PdPt octahedral and concave cubic nanoparticles (OH-PdPt NPs and CC-PdPt NPs) were synthesized firstly by developed electrochemical methods. EDS and XPS studies revealed that the as-synthesized PdPt NPs have similar composition both in bulk and surface. The alloy nanoparticles show surface structure dependent enhanced activity and stability for methanol, ethanol and glycerol electrooxidations (MOR, EOR and GOR). The {hk0} high-index facets enclosed CC-PdPt NPs show higher activity towards MOR and EOR which is 7.0-fold and 3.4-fold respectively higher than commercial Pt/C. However, {111} low-index facets enclosed OH-PdPt NPs show superior activity towards GOR, which is 4.5-fold higher than commercial Pt/C. The selective enhancing catalytic ability of PdPt NPs towards different alcohol electrooxidations could be attributed to the synergetic effect and modified electronic structure of Pd and Pt, as well as the important effects of surface atomic configuration. DFT calculations suggest that the higher activity of methanol and ethanol oxidation on high-index {hk0} facets is due to the faster decomposition process and lower oxidation barrier on the step sites. Nevertheless, the strong adsorption of COCHOHCO* on step sites leading to a much higher oxidation barrier, indicating the step sites of {hk0} facets are not beneficial for glycerol oxidation.

Abstract:Decentralized electrochemical production of H2O2 is an attractive alternative to the industrial anthraquinone process, the application of which is hindered by the lack of high‐performance electrocatalysts in acidic media. Herein, we report a novel catalyst design strategy to optimize the Pd sites in pure metallic aerogels by tuning their geometric environments and electronic structures. By increasing the Hg content in the Pd‐Hg aerogels, the Pd‐Pd coordination is gradually diminished, resulting in isolated, single‐atom‐like Pd motifs in the Pd2Hg5 aerogel. Further heterometal doping leads to a series of M‐Pd2Hg5 aerogels with an unalterable geometric environment, which allows us to solely investigate the electronic effects. Combining theoretical and experimental analysis, a volcano relationship has been obtained for the M‐Pd2Hg5 aerogels, demonstrating an effective tunability of the electronic structure of the Pd active sites. The optimized Au‐Pd2Hg5 aerogel exhibits an outstanding H2O2 selectivity of 92.8% as well as transferred electron numbers of ∼2.1 in the potential range of 0.0 – 0.4 VRHE. Our work opens a door for designing metallic aerogel electrocatalysts for H2O2 production and highlights the importance of electronic effects in tuning electrocatalytic performances. Multicomponent Platinum-Free Nanoporous Pd-based Alloy As an Active and Methanol-Tolerant Electrocatalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Development of high-performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is crucial to improve proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, a multicomponent nanoporous PdCuTiAl (np-PdCuTiAl) electrocatalyst has been synthesized by a facile one-step dealloying strategy. The np-PdCuTiAl catalyst exhibits a three-dimensional bicontinuous interpenetrating ligament/channel structure with an ultrafine length scale of ~3.7 nm. The half-wave potential of np PdCuTiAl is 0.873 V vs. RHE, more positive than those of PdC (0.756 V vs. RHE) and PtC (0.864 V vs. RHE) catalysts. The np-PdCuTiAl alloy shows a 4-electron reaction pathway with similar Tafel slopes to PtC. Remarkably, the half-wave potential shows a negative shift of only 12 mV for np-PdCuTiAl in the presence of methanol, and this negative shift is much lower than those of the PdC (50 mV) and PtC (165 mV) catalysts. The enhanced ORR activity of np-PdCuTiAl has been further rationalized through density functional theory calculations.
Modulating Electronic Structure and Atomic Insights into the Novel Hierarchically Porous PdCuFe Trimetallic Alloy Aerogel for Efficient Oxygen Reduction.

Abstract:The high cost of noble Pd/Pt required for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathode restricts the wide applications of fuel cells. In this study, the synthesis of a novel Pd3CuFe0.5 aerogel electrocatalyst is successfully demonstrated using self-assembly and lyophilization techniques, employing a mild reducing agent. The resulting aerogel electrocatalyst exhibits a distinctive 3D network structure, possessing a substantial BET-specific surface area of 75.19 m2 g-1. It is worth noting that the optimized Pd3CuFe0.5 aerogel demonstrates exceptional ORR performance with a high half-wave potential of 0.92 V versus RHE, a significant limiting current density of 7.6 mA cm-2, and the excellent electrocatalytic stability, superior to the reported noble metal electrocatalysts, with the ORR activity decays only 4.9% after 16 000 s. In addition, the Pd3CuFe0.5 aerogel electrocatalyst shows superior cycling stability for approximate to 120 h at a charge/discharge current density of 10 mA cm-2, indicating its promising application in fuel cells. Furthermore, the resulting composite aerogel possesses excellent hydrogen evolution reaction and ethanol oxidation reaction activity. The density functional theory calculations show that the partial oxidation of Pd3CuFe0.5 aerogel leads to a negative shift of the d-band center, which energetically optimizes the binding strength of *O intermediates, therefore accelerating the ORR activity. A novel Pd3CuFe0.5 trimetallic aerogel electrocatalyst is first prepared by a mild reduction agent via the self-assembly and freeze-drying technique. It exhibits remarkable ORR/OER bifunctional performance resulting from its large specific surface area, rapid diffusion tunnels, and exposed active sites, which shows promising application in the fields of fuel cells.image

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical synthesis of H 2 O 2 through a selective two-electron (2e − ) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an attractive alternative to the industrial anthraquinone oxidation method, as it allows decentralized H 2 O 2 production. Herein, we report that the synergistic interaction between partially oxidized palladium (Pd δ+ ) and oxygen-functionalized carbon can promote 2e − ORR in acidic electrolytes. An electrocatalyst synthesized by solution deposition of amorphous Pd δ+ clusters (Pd 3 δ+ and Pd 4 δ+ ) onto mildly oxidized carbon nanotubes (Pd δ+ -OCNT) shows nearly 100% selectivity toward H 2 O 2 and a positive shift of ORR onset potential by ~320 mV compared with the OCNT substrate. A high mass activity (1.946 A mg −1 at 0.45 V) of Pd δ+ -OCNT is achieved. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure characterization and density functional theory calculations suggest that the interaction between Pd clusters and the nearby oxygen-containing functional groups is key for the high selectivity and activity for 2e − ORR.

Abstract:Pd is a highly active non-Pt anode in direct ethanol fuel cells, and its morphology and structural composition heavily influence its electrocatalytic efficiency. In this study, three-dimensional (3D)-hollow Au microspheres (HNPs-Au) as a support for the Pd monolayer () were synthesized using a simple template method and galvanic replacement reaction. The experimental results and theoretical calculations show that the presence of HNPs-Au enhances the catalytic activity of ethanol oxidation in alkaline media, improving the electroactivity of metallic Pd. Benefiting from the 3D-hollow-porous structure and the significant synergistic impact between Au and Pd (balancing the adsorption energy of the intermediate and reactant molecules), achieves a 10.8-fold mass activity and a 3.3-fold enhancement of the specific activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction when compared to commercial Pd/C. Abstract:High‐valence metal sites modulated nickel‐vanadium layered double hydroxide (NiV LDH) electrocatalysts with the interfacial oxygen bridge bonds are successfully constructed. Benefitting from the abundant unfilled antibonding orbitals induced by the optimized d‐p orbital hybridization, which is beneficial to spatial charge redistribution and strong electronic coupling, thereby optimizing the adsorption/desorption energy of reaction intermediates and then accelerating the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics. Manipulating the electronic structure and coordination configuration of heterogeneous electrocatalyst is an advantageous strategy to motivate the intrinsic activity but remains challenging. Herein, guided by the theoretical mechanism of the d‐band center and valence‐bond theory, the high‐valence metal‐modulated nickel‐vanadium layered double hydroxides (M‐NiV LDH, M = Zr, and Mo) with interfacial oxygen bridge bonding structure are rationally designed and fabricated, affording a 3D vertically staggered and porous nanosheets array network. Benefitting from the abundant unfilled antibonding orbitals induced by the optimized Zr d‐orbital and O p‐orbital hybridization, the introduction of Zr site is beneficial to accelerate charge transfer kinetics and optimize the deprotonation of OH* as well as lower the O* → OOH* free energy. As a result, the as‐prepared Zr‐NiV LDH exhibits a promising oxygen evolution reaction performance with low overpotential and favorable long‐term stability. This work provides valuable insights into the design of electrocatalysts for electronic regulation and intrinsic activity improvement.

Abstract:Pd is a versatile catalyst in various hydrogen-related catalytic applications; however, it typically exhibits low activity in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as too strong Pd-H bonding makes the electronic desorption of H adatoms (Had) hardly occur. We herein report a selective etching-deposition approach to implant trace Pd atoms in the near-surface region of Ag nanocrystals, forming a heteratomic-rich Pd-Ag structure on Ag surface. This near-surface dilution of Pd atoms can dramatically facilitate the electronic desorption of Had. As a result, this approach enhances the electrocatalytic HER activity of Pd catalysts about 14 times with excellent performance durability, approaching the high level of Pt catalysts. While enhancing the catalytic performance, this atomic implantation strategy allows the substantial reduction of material costs. This work thus represents a step toward the high-performance, low-cost catalyst design through near-surface lattice engineering.

Abstract:Formic acid oxidation is an important electrocatalytic reaction in protonexchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, in which both active sites and species adsorption/activation play key roles. In this study, we have developed hollow Pd-Ag alloy nanostructures with high active surface areas for application to electrocatalytic formic acid oxidation. When a certain amount of Ag is incorporated into a Pd lattice, which is already a highly active material for formic acid oxidation, the electrocatalytic activity can be significantly boosted. As indicated by theoretical simulations, coupling between Pd and Ag induces polarization charges on Pd catalytic sites, which can enhance the adsorption of HCOO* species. As a result, the designed electrocatalysts can achieve reduced Pd usage and enhanced catalytic properties at the same time. This study represents an approach that simultaneously fabricates hollow structures to increase the number of active sites and utilizes interatomic interactions to tune species adsorption/activation towards improved electrocatalytic performance.

Abstract:A bottleneck to achieve efficient and stable electrocatalysts for Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (AEMFCs) is the relatively slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) taking place at the cathode. The rather mild alkaline conditions in the AEMFC enable the utilization of various PGM-free catalysts, which brings up new possibilities of finding abundant and inexpensive electrocatalysts without compromising the power density. From theory and previous experiments, it is known that Au and Ag bind oxygen weakly, whereas other transition metals (e.g., Pd, Cu, Fe, Ni) bind strongly to oxygenated species 1 . Therefore, a suitable geometric arrangement between Ag, an abundant metal with relatively high specific activity, and other metals may give rise to optimum binding of oxygen and thus a high activity. A good strategy to improve the activity of Ag-based catalysts could be a rational design of alloys that can enhance the intrinsic activity of Ag by both ensemble and electronic effects 2–4 . The former is based on the combination of active sites that facilitate the initial oxygen binding together with Ag active sites that help desorb hydroxide anions, whereas the latter is induced by the alloying metal (which binds oxygenated species strongly) on the electronic structure of the overlaying Ag that tunes its binding to oxygen 5 . Herein, we report the fabrication and characterization of Ag thin-films alloyed with Pd, Ni, Cu and Mo as a tool to investigate the ORR reaction in terms of ensemble and electronic effects and thus relate alloy composition and geometric arrangement with ORR activity. Ag thin-film model catalysts are fabricated by means of physical vapor deposition methods (PVD) with high control over the amount of material deposited. By varying alloy composition and evaluating electrochemical activity and stability, together with detailed physical characterization, the degree and extent of electronic effects are elucidated. In the same way, sputtering of the same amount of Ag on thin-films of different metals evidences the role of the alloying metal on tuning the activity of Ag through an adjustment of its d-band that changes the binding of oxygenated species, as well as through an ensemble effect that provides active sites for the first elementary steps of the reaction. These results provide insights for more tailored design of electrocatalysts in alkaline media by shedding new light on the mechanisms through which the ORR kinetics are improved in alkaline media. Swelling the d/p‐Band Center Difference Induced by Heterostructure Self‐Optimization Engineering for Enhanced Water Oxidation

Abstract:A novel 3DOM Ni2P/CeO2 heterojunction catalyst is reported with a "self‐optimization effect" for efficient oxygen evolution reaction. CeO2 and surface adsorbed‐PO43− assisted force are the main and secondary factors in promoting catalytic activity during the reconstruction process. They synergistically inflate the d/p band center difference of surface Ni and O, balance the adsorption energy of intermediates *OOH, and ultimately promote catalytic performance. Monitoring the dynamic behavior of active species and modulating their electronic architecture are crucial for the development of efficient catalysts. Here, a 3D ordered multi‐level porous Ni2P/CeO2 heterojunction catalyst with a "self‐optimization effect" is strategically synthesized for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 235 mV at 20 mA cm−2 in 1.0 m KOH. During the OER process, the heterojunction catalyst specifically undergoes a unique phase transition involving the leaching of the P element, which triggers the formation of the PO43−‐NiOOH/CeO2 catalyst with PO43− adsorbed on the surface of the reconstructed product NiOOH/CeO2. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the CeO2 and adsorbed‐PO43− in the self‐optimized structure are essential and minor factors for enhancing catalytic activity, respectively. They collaborate to promote the redistribution of electron density in surface Ni and O, increasing the d/p‐band center difference. This phenomenon results in optimized adsorption/desorption of the key intermediates such as *OOH and improved catalytic performance. Overall, this research highlights the potential of d/p‐band modulation for the rational design of cost‐effective and high‐efficiency electrocatalysts.

Abstract:We investigated the oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) on Pd monolayers on various surfaces and on Pd alloys to obtain a substitute for Pt and to elucidate the origin of their activity. The activity of Pd monolayers supported on Ru(0001), Rh(111), Ir(111), Pt(111), and Au(111) increased in the following order: Pd/Ru(0001) < Pd/Ir(111) < Pd/Rh(111) < Pd/Au(111) < Pd/Pt(111). Their activity was correlated with their d-band centers, which were calculated using density functional theory (DFT). We found a volcano-type dependence of activity on the energy of the d-band center of Pd monolayers, with Pd/Pt(111) at the top of the curve. The activity of the non-Pt Pd2Co/C alloy electrocatalyst nanoparticles that we synthesized was comparable to that of commercial Pt-containing catalysts. The kinetics of the ORR on this electrocatalyst predominantly involves a four-electron step reduction with the first electron transfer being the rate-determining step. The downshift of the d-band center of the Pd "skin", which constitutes the alloy surface due to the strong surface segregation of Pd at elevated temperatures, determined its high ORR activity. Additionally, it showed very high methanol tolerance, retaining very high catalytic activity for the ORR at high concentrations of methanol. Provided its stability is satisfactory, this catalyst might possibly replace Pt in fuel-cell cathodes, especially those of direct methanol oxidation fuel cells (DMFCs).

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis holds great promise for green hydrogen production, but suffering from high loading of platinum-group metals (PGM) for large-scale deployment. Anchoring PGM-based materials on supports can not only improve the atomic utilization of active sites but also enhance the intrinsic activity. However, in practical PEM electrolysis, it is still challenging to mediate hydrogen adsorption/desorption pathways with high coverage of hydrogen intermediates over catalyst surface. Here, operando generated stable palladium (Pd) hydride nanoclusters anchored on tungsten carbide (WCx) supports were constructed for hydrogen evolution in PEM electrolysis. Under PEM operando conditions, hydrogen intercalation induces formation of Pd hydrides (PdHx) featuring weakened hydrogen binding energy (HBE), thus triggering reverse hydrogen spillover from WCx (strong HBE) supports to PdHx sites, which have been evidenced by operando characterizations, electrochemical results and theoretical studies. This PdHx-WCx material can be directly utilized as cathode electrocatalysts in PEM electrolysis with ultralow Pd loading of 0.022 mg cm-2, delivering the current density of 1 A cm-2 at the cell voltage of ~1.66 V and continuously running for 200 hours without obvious degradation. This innovative strategy via tuning the operando characteristics to mediate reverse hydrogen spillover provide new insights for designing high-performance supported PGM-based electrocatalysts.
