Abstract:148 patients with leg ulcers were treated in 14 clinics with Clinagel or with Debrisan Paste for four weeks. The size of the surface of the ulcer and the overall evaluation of the ulcer by physician before and after treatment were the most important criteria for the assessment of efficacy. The comparison between the two treatments was carried out by t- and x2-test at the level of a = 0.05. Clinagel was shown to be better than Debrisan. Its superiority was statistically significant in regard to reduction of area, depth, pain and swelling, increase of granulation tissue, reepithelialisation of ulcer and the subjective judgement of physician and patient. No systemic side effects were observed in any of the patients and only slight local side effects were registered.
The unique contribution of handwriting accuracy to literacy skills in Japanese adolescents

Abstract:There is widespread concern about declining literacy skills in recent young Japanese. The present study investigated how higher-level reading and writing proficiencies are underpinned by basic literacy skills in Japanese adolescents. From a large database of the most popular literacy exams in Japan, we retrospectively analyzed word- and text-level data for middle and high school students who had taken the exams during the same period in the 2019 academic year using structural equation modeling. We extracted main data for 161 students as well as six independent datasets for validation. Our results validated the three-dimensional view of word-level literacy (reading accuracy, writing accuracy, and semantic comprehension) and demonstrated that writing and semantic skills underpinned text writing and reading, respectively. The semantic comprehension of words affected text writing indirectly via text reading; however, it could not replace the direct effect of word writing accuracy. These findings, which were robustly replicated with multiple independent datasets, provided new evidence of dimension-specific relationships between word- and text-level literacy skills and confirmed the unique contribution of word handwriting acquisition to text literacy proficiency. The replacement of handwriting by digital writing (e.g., typing) is a global trend. However, the dual-pathway model of literacy development identified in this study suggests there are advantages in sustaining early literacy education by handwriting for the growth of higher-level language skills in future generations. Abstract:An experiment using young and old subjects was carried out to test two different explanations for the Harris survey data showing that elderly persons rate their own lives much more positively than they rate the lives of similarly aged others. The informational bias explanation suggests that the old (and young) are passive recipients and mediators of widely disseminated information concerning the life problems of the elderly. The negative evaluations of the elderly in general reflect in part the objective conditions of the lives of the elderly and the tendency of the media to focus on the problems of the elderly. In contrast, self-evaluations are relatively positive because generalized views of growing old are attenuated by lowered expectancies regarding living conditions in late life. The motivational bias explanation assumes a self-enhancing cognitive bias among the elderly that causes them to devalue the lives of similarly aged others. The first explanation is supported by replicating the Harris poll data and demonstrating that the self-other discrepancy can be systematically manipulated by varying, in theoretically relevant ways, the instructions given to subjects.

Abstract:This study examined age-group differences in eye movements among third-grade, fifth-grade, and adult Japanese readers. In Experiment 1, Japanese children, but not adults, showed a longer fixation time on logographic kanji words than on phonologically transparent hiragana words. Further, an age-group difference was found in the first fixation duration on hiragana words but not on kanji words, suggesting character-type-dependent reading development in Japanese children. Examination of the distributions of saccade landing positions revealed that, like adults, both third and fifth graders fixated more on kanji than on hiragana characters, which suggests that even young children utilize the same oculomotor control strategy (the kanji targeting strategy) as Japanese adults. In Experiment 2, we examined whether the proportion of kanji characters in a text affected adult reading performance. Japanese adults made more refixations and regressions in texts with a high proportion of hiragana characters. The results of both experiments suggest that differences between kanji and kana affect the reading efficiency of school-age children and that maturation of reading skills allows adults to optimize their strategy in reading kanji and kana mixed texts.

Pilot Study on Reading and Writing Characteristics in Children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Abstract:This study surveys the factors regarding reading and writing difficulties in children with attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and uses these results to provide support. We conducted surveys on 16 elementary school children from 3rd to 6th grades who were diagnosed with ADHD by a physician based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). We conducted a Hiragana reading test, a Kanji reading and writing test, and a visual perception test on the subject children. We requested that the parents of the children complete a reading and writing symptom checklist, the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCDQ), the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), the ADHD-Rating Scale (ADHD-RS), and the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ). We conducted a multiple regression analysis using the Kanji reading and writing test as the dependent variable. Results revealed that the positional task score in the visual perception test was a factor that influences Kanji writing. Meanwhile, gender, reading-related items on the reading and writing symptom checklist, and performance such as misreading of hiragana were factors that influenced Kanji reading. Based on the results, we suggested that when teaching Kanji writing, children's visual cognition ability should be assessed, and ways to incorporate learning methods that supplement visual perception, such as color masses and electronic learning materials, should be devised. When teaching reading, we suggest using teaching materials that present not only text but also audio as needed, and support the awareness of parents.

Abstract:Abstract. The modern Japanese writing system comprises different scripts, such as Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana. These scripts differ greatly in both typicality and frequency of usage. In two experimental studies using names of cities or prefectures in Japan as target stimuli, we examined two hypotheses, the typicality hypothesis and fluency hypothesis, in order to assess effects of Japanese script on psychological processes. It was found that Kanji names induced typical thinking in a participant’s description of a location, whereas Katakana names induced rather nontypical thinking. In contrast, we found that script differences did not affect distance estimations. We discuss these effects of Japanese script on psychological processes in terms of the typicality hypothesis (differences in typical usage habits between Kanji and Katakana that affect psychological processes).

Abstract:This study sought to obtain comprehensive data on the difficulty level of kun‐reading (native Japanese reading) of Japanese kanji (Chinese characters adapted for Japanese) learned in junior high and high school. Drawing from an item‐based analysis, it explored the word variables related to the difficulty level of kun‐reading. A reading test comprising 645 kun‐readings of common kanji learned in junior high and high school was administered to 123 university students. Tobit regressions were conducted for the total, okurigana (phonetic kana letters suffix written after kanji), and single kanji items, using the word variables as independent variables and the reading accuracy as the dependent variable. Significant positive contributions were observed for imageability and word frequency for all item categories, kun‐reading ratio for the single kanji items, and okurigana ratio for the total items. A significant negative contribution was observed for okurigana neighborhood size for the okurigana items. The results highlighted the need for education focusing on the meanings of kanji characters, and for a language policy for the use of the okurigana.

Abstract:The reading ability of English readers has been shown to correlate with psychophysical measurements of dynamic visual information processing. This study investigated the relationship between reading ability and dynamic visual information processing in healthy adult native Japanese readers (n = 46). Reading ability was assessed using three different tests: the Japanese Adult Reading Test (JART), transposed-letter detection task, and oral reading. Principal component analysis was performed on the scores on the three reading tests to quantify reading ability. Psychophysical thresholds were measured for contrast detection and speed discrimination with a drifting grating stimulus as well as for tracking two targets among concentrically revolving objects, providing an upper speed limit for attentional tracking. Simple correlation analysis revealed that one of the principal components correlated with the tracking speed limit. In addition, another principal component correlated with the speed-discrimination threshold, which is consistent with previous findings in English readers. These results suggest that Japanese reading ability involves at least two different processes, each sharing underlying mechanisms with visual motion and attentional processing.

Abstract:Touted as a multidimensional measure of mental toughness in sport, this study explored the psychometric properties of the Psychological Performance Inventory (PPI; Loehr, 1986) and its successor the Psychological Performance Inventory–A (PPI–A; Golby, Sheard, & Van Wersch, 2007). Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to examine the extent to which data collected with 333 Australian footballers aged between 15 and 18 years (M = 16.88, SD = .71) fitted the a priori measurement models of both inventories. The results did not support the psychometric properties of the PPI both in terms of model fit and internal consistency. Although model fit data for the PPI–A were encouraging, inadequate levels of internal consistency were evidenced. Convergent validity analyses involving measures of achievement goals and global mental toughness generally supported the validity of the PPI and PPI–A subscales. Taken together with previous research (e.g., Middleton et al., 2004), caution is urged when considering the use of the PPI as a measure of mental toughness in sport. Although the empirical data were generally supportive of the psychometric properties of the PPI–A, conceptual (e.g., lack of conceptual underpinnings) and methodological (i.e., revalidated a flawed inventory) concerns become important factors when considering the PPI–A as a measure of mental toughness.

Abstract:A lexical approach was employed to investigate the personality structure of Japanese personality-relevant descriptors. The vocabulary in this study comprised 463 words extracted from Japanese dictionaries using a broad word-selection strategy, identified as suitable for expressing personality based on a separate study involving respondents in their 20s. The analysis was based on self-ratings from 755 individuals aged 20 and older for 463 words, including 325 adjectives and adjectival verbs, 24 nouns, 97 verbs and compound words, and 17 adverbs. All surveys were conducted online. Ipsatized data was subjected to principal component analysis with equamax rotation, and the content of components was examined at each hierarchical level, ranging from one- to ten-component levels. The results supported the replicability of the personality structure models derived from multi-language analyses, such as Big Two, Big Three, Big Six, and Multi-language Seven. However, this support does not extend to the Big Five model. Its characteristic lies not in the emergence of unique and novel components exclusive to Japanese language but in the combinations of subcategories classified in previous studies at each hierarchical level when forming components.

Social Capital and the Improvement in Functional Ability among Older People in Japan: A Multilevel Survival Analysis Using JAGES Data

Abstract:We investigated the contextual effects of community social capital on functional ability among older people with functional disability in Japan, and the cross-level interaction effects between community social capital and individual psychosocial characteristics. We used data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study for 1936 men and 2207 women nested within 320 communities and followed for 46 months. We used objective data for functional ability trajectories derived from the national long-term care-insurance system, and a validated measure of health-related community social capital comprising three components: civic participation, social cohesion, and reciprocity. A multilevel survival analysis with a community-level random intercept showed that in communities with high civic participation, women who actively participated in any community group showed greater functional ability improvement than did women who did not participate (pinteraction = 0.05). In communities with high social cohesion, older men who perceived that their communities' social cohesion was high showed greater functional ability improvement than men who perceived it to be low (pinteraction = 0.02). Community social capital can thus affect functional ability improvements variously, depending on individual psychosocial characteristics and gender. Community interventions aiming to foster social capital should focus on people who are excluded from existing opportunities to participate.

Abstract:Microvascular laser welding can be effectively used in large-diameter artery techniques. The carotid arteries of 12 anesthetized mongrel dogs were exposed. Following heparinization, the carotid arteries were transected, cleaned along their edges, and repaired on the right side by laser and on the left side by suture. The laser-assisted vascular anastomosis (LAVA) required four stay sutures and laser power for welding. Six-week patency for LAVA vs suture anastomosis was 100% vs 92%, respectively. Anastomotic time requirements were less with LAVA (seven vs 25 minutes). Intimal healing for both techniques immediately demonstrated an intraluminal thrombus, which resolved showing complete endothelial repair by four weeks. The laser seal demonstrated little inflammation compared with the giant cell reaction of suture anastomosis. Immediate wall tensions of 6 to 18 X 10(5) dynes/cm2 were tolerated after both techniques. Laser-assisted vascular anastomosis of large-diameter arteries is feasible, strong, and associated with minimal inflammation.
On lattice decoding of space-time block codes for asynchronous cooperative relaying

Abstract:Li and Xia have recently investigated the design of space-time codes that achieve full spatial diversity for asynchronous cooperative communications. They show that certain of the binary space-time trellis codes derived from the Hammons-El Gamal stacking construction are delay tolerant and can be used in the multilevel code constructions by Lu and Kumar to produce delay tolerant space-time codes for PSK and QAM signaling. In prior work, the first author has developed generalizations of the Lu-Kumar construction for more general AM-PSK constellations that also preserve the delay tolerance of the underlying constituent codes and exhibited a new construction of short block codes that achieve significant levels of delay tolerance. This paper discusses how lattice decoding techniques can be adapted to perform decoding of such STBC for asynchronous diversity.
Influence of cognitive abilities on literacy skills in a Korean–Japanese bilingual child with developmental dyslexia

Abstract:Some individuals with developmental dyslexia show dissociation in reading skills between languages. The occurrence of dissociation depends on differences in the orthographic characteristics and cognitive demands of languages. This article reports on a Korean–Japanese bilingual and biliterate boy, SJ, with developmental dyslexia (aged 11 years), who displayed dissociation between Korean and Japanese in reading and writing accuracy. This study aimed to discuss possible accounts for the profile of his literacy skills from orthographic and cognitive perspectives. To accomplish this aim, we measured SJ's literacy skills, receptive vocabulary, and cognitive abilities (i.e., phonological skills, naming speed, and visual skills) in both Korean and Japanese. Then, we compared his skills to those of monolingual and bilingual children. In terms of accuracy, his reading skills in Korean did not differ significantly from those of bilinguals, although they were lower than Korean monolinguals. His spelling skills were within the average range for Korean monolinguals and bilinguals. In contrast, his reading and writing accuracy levels in Japanese were low compared to both Japanese monolinguals and bilinguals. Moreover, his reading and writing deficits were more remarkable in Japanese kanji. However, his cognitive profile was similar between languages. Specifically, he showed deficits in phonological skills and naming speed in both languages, as well as deficits in visual skills. These results were explained by the facts that visual skills are one of the significant predictors of reading and writing accuracy in Japanese but not in Korean, and that visual skills are a key in learning kanji. Thus, our case, SJ, supports the cognitive account, namely, the idea that different cognitive demands on the development of literacy skills can cause dissociation in literacy skills (especially in terms of accuracy) in bilingual children.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to determine if differential reading and spelling mechanisms were involved in a Japanese patient with aphasia. In our case, the patient scored low on all of the administered reading tasks, suggesting that both the reading lexical and non-lexical routes were impaired. In contrast, his writing-to-dictation score for Kana nonwords was high, suggesting that the spelling non-lexical route was intact. However, the patient scored low on a writing-to-dictation task comprised of high-familiarity Kanji words. The spelling lexical route was thought to be impaired. Therefore, the mechanism(s) involved in reading and spelling may differ in this case.
Modeling individual differences in vocabulary development: A large‐scale study on Japanese heritage speakers

Abstract:This study examines when the vocabulary knowledge of Japanese heritage speakers (HSs; N = 427, Mage = 9.96, female = 213) begins to diverge from monolingual counterparts (N = 136, Mage = 6.69, female = 65) and what factors explain individual differences in HS development. Vocabulary of HSs began to diverge from 5.61 years and this difference lasted until they were young adults. We also administered a fit‐for‐purpose questionnaire in 2021–2023 and identified six experiential latent factors: Holiday, School, Community, Proficiency, Literacy, and Home. Structural modeling indicates that Holiday predicted vocabulary scores, while Holiday and Literacy predicted Proficiency. Our findings highlight the importance of immersion experiences and literacy engagement for heritage language development.

Abstract:In the digital era, traditional communication has undergone a drastic transformation into computer-mediated communication (CMC), which can be classified into synchronous CMC (SCMC) and asynchronous CMC (ASCMC). This study compared the effects of extracurricular CMC among students about schoolwork on students' digital reading achievement between SCMC and ASCMC, with the categorization of students into three levels, i.e., top, medium, and low achievers. Data from 6,109 samples representing 183 schools in Japan were retrieved from the dataset of Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018. Due to the hierarchical nature of the data, multilevel regression analysis was adopted to identify the variance of studentand school-level. The results revealed a significant positive effect of SCMC on the digital reading performance of students, while ASCMC had a negative impact. Furthermore, among the three categories of achievers, medium achievers were the group most sensitive to both SCMC and ASCMC at any frequency, while top achievers were not significantly influenced by SCMC and ASCMC at any frequency, and low achievers were influenced by SCMC and ASCMC only at several frequencies. These findings indicate that it is more advisable for students to use SCMC, and treatment should be customized to students of different levels.

Abstract:Phonological knowledge plays a pivotal role in many aspects of language processing, but it remains controversial whether it is required for writing. In the present study, we examined the issue by focusing on written production in an opaque logographic script (kanji) with highly irregular pronunciation rules, which allowed for a rigorous test of whether or not phonology contributes to writing. Using a phonological priming paradigm in two experiments, we measured response latency while participants orally named target pictures or wrote down their names in kanji. Each target was preceded by a phonographic character (kana) which represented the same sound (mora) as the beginning of the target name or a different mora. By manipulating the degree of phonological overlap between primes and target names (i.e., morae, consonants and vowels), we found that only the moraic overlap could speed up word production in logographic writing (Experiment 1). In contrast, naming response was facilitated by mora-overlap as well as vowel-overlap. This between-task difference in phonological encoding suggests that phonological codes for spoken production do not necessarily precede orthographic access during logographic writing. In Experiment 2, we further found that the facilitatory effects of moraic information did not differ in magnitude between writing and naming when primes were masked and presented more briefly, suggesting a net component of bottom-up phonological activation which contributes to logographic writing. Collectively, we propose that orthographic codes of kanji are accessed directly from semantics, whereas phonology plays a non-specific modulatory role to enhance neurocognitive systems involved in writing.

Abstract:Age identity (Garstka et al., 1997) was examined with regard to its structure in Japan and the United States. Factor analysis confirmed the validity of a one-factor structure in both countries. Cluster analysis suggested a three-cluster solution in both Japan (ingroup identification and significance, sense of similarity, ingroup positive evaluation) and the USA (ingroup orientation, age centrality, ingroup positivity). In Japan, age-group pride and positive experiences clustered with age-group identifications and awareness. This points to the importance of a sense of group membership in Japanese young people’s positive feelings about their age group. In the USA, the two items clustered with likeability, value and importance, and were distinct from ingroup identification. This suggests that American individuals gain a sense of pride and positive experience when they like, value and give importance to being young. Finally, our Japanese respondents ranked age-group positivity and attachment lower than the Americans did, suggesting that positive feeling associated with being young may be less common in Japan. Future studies of intergenerational communication using age identity were suggested.
