Abstract:The occlusion-capable optical see-through head-mounted display (OC-OSTHMD) is actively developed in recent years since it allows mutual occlusion between virtual objects and the physical world to be correctly presented in augmented reality (AR). However, implementing occlusion with the special type of OSTHMDs prevents the appealing feature from the wide application. In this paper, a novel approach for realizing mutual occlusion for common OSTHMDs is proposed. A wearable device with per-pixel occlusion capability is designed. OSTHMD devices are upgraded to be occlusion-capable by attaching the device before optical combiners. A prototype with HoloLens 1 is built. The virtual display with mutual occlusion is demonstrated in real-time. A color correction algorithm is proposed to mitigate the color aberration caused by the occlusion device. Potential applications, including the texture replacement of real objects and the more realistic semi-transparent objects display, are demonstrated. The proposed system is expected to realize a universal implementation of mutual occlusion in AR.

Abstract:Design challenges in reducing the size, weight, and off-axis aberrations of projection lenses often pose obstacles to the miniaturization of augmented reality (AR) devices like glasses. Here, we present a meta/refractive hybrid lenses (MRL)-based AR projection display illuminated with a MicroLED. The compact system features commercial ability with an entrance pupil diameter of 3.2 mm and a total track length (TTL) less than 7.7 mm, achieving superior resolution and minimal off-axis aberrations with distortion < 2% across a 30 degrees field of view (FoV). The AR glass result also incorporates a hardware-inspired correction neural network with an apparent point-spread-function (PSF) feature. A predeconvolution from light source further corrects the residual system aberration, reinforcing AR image quality. Experiments with this computational enhancement method demonstrate a promoted similarity to the ground truth, validating its reliability and feasibility in increasing the yield rate of compact AR devices.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) technology has been applied in various areas, such as large-scale manufacturing, national defense, healthcare, movie and mass media and so on. An important way to realize AR display is using computer-generated hologram (CGH), which is accompanied by low image quality and heavy computing defects. Meanwhile, the diffraction of Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) has a negative effect on image quality. In this paper, a modified algorithm based on traditional Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm was proposed to improve the image quality, and new method to establish experimental system was used to broaden field of view (FOV). In the experiment, undesired zero-order diffracted light was eliminated and high definition 2D image was acquired with FOV broadened to 36.1 degree. We have also done some pilot research in 3D reconstruction with tomography algorithm based on Fresnel diffraction. With the same experimental system, experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 3D reconstruction. These modifications are effective and efficient, and may provide a better solution in AR realization.

Abstract:Augmented Reality (AR) composes virtual objects with real scenes in a mixed environment where human–computer interaction has more semantic meanings. To seamlessly merge virtual objects with real scenes, correct occlusion handling is a significant challenge. We present an approach to separate occluded objects in multiple layers by utilizing depth, color, and neighborhood information. Scene depth is obtained by stereo cameras and two Gaussian local kernels are used to represent color, spatial smoothness. These three cues are intelligently fused in a probability framework, where the occlusion information can be safely estimated. We apply our method to handle occlusions in video-based AR where virtual objects are simply overlapped on real scenes. Experiment results show the approach can correctly register virtual and real objects in different depth layers, and provide a spatial-awareness interaction environment. Abstract:We propose a near-eye display optics system that supports three-dimensional mutual occlusion. By exploiting the polarization-control properties of a phase-only liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS), we achieve real see-through scene masking as well as virtual digital scene imaging using a single LCoS. Dynamic depth control of the real scene mask and virtual digital image is also achieved by using a focus tunable lens (FTL) pair of opposite curvatures. The proposed configuration using a single LCoS and opposite curvature FTL pair enables the self-alignment of the mask and image at an arbitrary depth without distorting the see-through view of the real scene. We verified the feasibility of the proposed optics using two optical benchtop setups: one with two off-the-shelf FTLs for continuous depth control, and the other with a single Pancharatnam–Berry phase-type FTL for the improved form factor.

Abstract:We propose a bifocal computational near eye light field display (bifocal computational display) and structure parameters determination scheme (SPDS) for bifocal computational display that achieves greater depth of field (DOF), high resolution, accommodation and compact form factor. Using a liquid varifocal lens, two single-focal computational light fields are superimposed to reconstruct a virtual object's light field by time multiplex and avoid the limitation on high refresh rate. By minimizing the deviation between reconstructed light field and original light field, we propose a determination framework to determine the structure parameters of bifocal computational light field display. When applied to different objective to SPDS, it can achieve high average resolution or uniform resolution display over scene depth range. To analyze the advantages and limitation of our proposed method, we have conducted simulations and constructed a simple prototype which comprises a liquid varifocal lens, dual-layer LCDs and a uniform backlight. The results of simulation and experiments with our method show that the proposed system can achieve expected performance well. Owing to the excellent performance of our system, we motivate bifocal computational display and SPDS to contribute to a daily-use and commercial virtual reality display. Abstract:A switchable virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) system is proposed using digital optical cloaking. Optical cloaking allows completely opaque VR devices to be "cloaked," switching to AR or MR while providing correct three-dimensional (3D) parallax and perspective of the real world, without the need for transparent optics. On the other hand, 3D capture and display devices with non-zero thicknesses, require optical cloaking to properly display captured reality. A simplified stereoscopic system with two cameras and existing VR systems can be an approximation for limited VR, AR, or MR. To provide true 3D visual effects, multiple input cameras, a 3D display, and a simple linear calculation amounting to cloaking can be used. Since the display size requirements for VR, AR, and MR are usually small, with increasing computing power and pixel densities, the framework presented here can provide a widely deployable VR, AR, MR design.

Abstract:Glasses-free light field displays have significantly progressed due to advances in high-resolution microdisplays and high-end graphics processing units (GPUs). However, for near-eye light-field displays requiring portability, the fundamental trade-off regarding achieved spatial resolution remains: retinal blur quality must be degraded; otherwise, computational consumption increases. This has prevented synthesizing the high-quality light field from being fast. By integrating off-the-shelf gaze tracking modules into near-eye light-field displays, we present wearable virtual reality prototypes supporting human visual system-oriented focus cues. An optimized, foveated light field is delivered to each eye subject to the gaze point, providing more natural visual experiences than state-of-the-art solutions. Importantly, the factorization runtime can be immensely reduced, since the image resolution is only high within the gaze cone. In addition, we demonstrate significant improvements in computation and retinal blur quality over counterpart near-eye displays.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) three-dimensional (3D) display is the hardware entrance of metaverse and attracts great interest. The fusion of physical world with 3D virtual images is non-trivial. In this paper, we proposed an AR 3D display based on a pixelated volume holographic optical element (P-VHOE). The see-through combiner is prepared by spatial multiplexing. A prototype of AR 3D display with high diffraction efficiency (78.59%), high transmission (>80%) and non-repeating views is realized. Virtual 3D objects with high fidelity in depth is reconstructed by P-VHOE, with a complex wavelet structural similarity (CW-SSIM) value of 0.9882. The proposed prototype provides an efficient solution for a compact glasses-free AR 3D display. Potential applications include window display, exhibition, education, teleconference.

Abstract:We investigate the effect that visual occlusion plays on users' perception in a prototypical augmented reality post-stroke therapy system. We implemented a reach-based therapeutic exercise using the Microsoft Kinect to enable depth sensing and correct visual occlusion of the upper-limb. Thirty participants evaluated the exercise with three different visual occlusion modes: the correct visual occlusion, a virtual-always-occludes---to date the most commonly used mode in augmented reality---and a mode with semi-transparent virtual objects. The analysis of their reported experience showed that correct occlusion was the most preferred mode for performing the reaching exercise, providing a more tangible and realistic interactive experience.

Abstract:In recent years, augmented reality (AR) has been a research hotpot. It emphasizes that virtual objects and real scene are merged with the correct perspective relationship. However, most of existing AR systems simply adds virtual objects on real scene image. It means that if a real hand is in front of the virtual object, the virtual object is still cover the hand with wrong occlusion relationship. On the other hand, most systems just present virtual information, preventing user from touching or interacting with the virtual object.. In this paper, we build an AR system achieving mutual occlusion and interaction. Instead of using structure from motion method, we make use of the depth image of Kinect camera to integrate a 3D space volume and track the camera pose as well. Then we propose a layer rendering method according to the depth relationship to implement mutual occlusion fusion. At last, we fulfill collision detection and interaction through a fast voxel detection method. We define the neighbor cube for every virtual surface point and implement the detection in parallel with GPU.
360-degree mixed reality volumetric display using an asymmetric diffusive holographic optical element

Abstract:Volumetric display technique has a great advantage of displaying realistic three-dimensional contents with a 360-degree viewing angle. However, most volumetric displays cannot provide mixed reality because their screens inside the displays obstruct the external scene. We design a 360-degree mixed-reality volumetric display using an asymmetric diffusive holographic optical element (ADHOE). The ADHOE has wavelength selectivity, and it diffuses the light with the only specific wavelength for the virtual object, so it is possible to optically combine the virtual object and the real scene. Also, the ADHOE has different vertical and horizontal diffusing angles, and it is suitable for a horizontal-parallax-only application. In our system, the parallax images are generated by the DMD, and they are projected sequentially on the ADHOE. The ADHOE is shaped as a slanted curved surface with respect to the optical axis, and some annoying color dispersion is observed due to the mismatch between the diffraction peak points of two different wavelengths. In order to solve this problem, the carrier frequency is applied to green elemental images and the proper Fourier filter cuts off the unwanted diffraction peak points. The Fourier transform with 2f optics is built to record the ADHOE where the angular spectral bandwidth is determined by adjusting the width of the incident object light. A 360-degree see-through display with ADHOE is implemented and the feasibility of mixed reality is verified successfully.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) allows computer generated graphics to be overlaid in images or video captured by a camera in real time. This technology is often used to enhance perception by providing extra information or simply by enriching the experience of the user. AR offers a significant potential in many applications such as industrial, medical, education and entertainment. However, for AR to achieve the maximum potential and become fully accepted, the real and virtual objects within the user’s environment must become seamlessly integrated. Three main types of problems arise when we try to achieve this effect: illumination issues, tracking difficulties and occlusion troubles. In this work we present an algorithm to handle AR occlusions in real time. Our approach uses raw depth information of the scene to realize a rough foreground / background segmentation. We use this information, as well as details from color data to estimate a blending coefficient and combine the virtual objects with the real objects into a single image. After experimenting with different scenes we show that our approach is able to produce consistent and aesthetically pleasing occlusions between virtual and real objects, with a low computational cost. Furthermore, we explore different alternatives to improving the quality of the final results while overcoming limitations of previous methods.
The Effect of Interocular Contrast Differences on the Appearance of Augmented Reality Imagery

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) devices seek to create compelling visual experiences that merge virtual imagery with the natural world. These devices often rely on wearable near-eye display systems that can optically overlay digital images to the left and right eyes of the user separately. Ideally, the two eyes should be shown images with minimal radiometric differences (e.g., the same overall luminance, contrast, and color in both eyes), but achieving this binocular equality can be challenging in wearable systems with stringent demands on weight and size. Basic vision research has shown that a spectrum of potentially detrimental perceptual effects can be elicited by imagery with radiometric differences between the eyes, but it is not clear whether and how these findings apply to the experience of modern AR devices. In this work, we first develop a testing paradigm for assessing multiple aspects of visual appearance at once, and characterize five key perceptual factors when participants viewed stimuli with interocular contrast differences. In a second experiment, we simulate optical see-through AR imagery using conventional desktop LCD monitors and use the same paradigm to evaluate the multi-faceted perceptual implications when the AR display luminance differs between the two eyes. We also include simulations of monocular AR systems (i.e., systems in which only one eye sees the displayed image). Our results suggest that interocular contrast differences can drive several potentially detrimental perceptual effects in binocular AR systems, such as binocular luster, rivalry, and spurious depth differences. In addition, monocular AR displays tend to have more artifacts than binocular displays with a large contrast difference in the two eyes. A better understanding of the range and likelihood of these perceptual phenomena can help inform design choices that support high-quality user experiences in AR.
Mixed Reality Depth Contour Occlusion Using Binocular Similarity Matching and Three-dimensional Contour Optimisation

Abstract:Mixed reality applications often require virtual objects that are partly occluded by real objects. However, previous research and commercial products have limitations in terms of performance and efficiency. To address these challenges, we propose a novel depth contour occlusion (DCO) algorithm. The proposed method is based on the sensitivity of contour occlusion and a binocular stereoscopic vision device. In this method, a depth contour map is combined with a sparse depth map obtained from a two-stage adaptive filter area stereo matching algorithm and the depth contour information of the objects extracted by a digital image stabilisation optical flow method. We also propose a quadratic optimisation model with three constraints to generate an accurate dense map of the depth contour for high-quality real-virtual occlusion. The whole process is accelerated by GPU. To evaluate the effectiveness of the algorithm, we demonstrate a time con-sumption statistical analysis for each stage of the DCO algorithm execution. To verify the relia-bility of the real-virtual occlusion effect, we conduct an experimental analysis on single-sided, enclosed, and complex occlusions; subsequently, we compare it with the occlusion method without quadratic optimisation. With our GPU implementation for real-time DCO, the evaluation indicates that applying the presented DCO algorithm can enhance the real-time performance and the visual quality of real-virtual occlusion.

Three-dimensional Display with a Multi-Directional Backlight

Abstract:To realize three-dimensional(3D) images with low crosstalk, full resolution, and multi-view, a 3D display based on a multi-directional backlight is proposed. An eye-tracker in the system is used to acquire the position of human eyes and feedback to multi-directional backlight and the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel. Directional parallax images are time-sequentially provided to each eye by simultaneously working of multi-directional backlight and LCD screen. Viewers can achieve 3D perception based on the persistence of vision. Multi-directional backlight is mainly realized by a series of cylindrical waves and a holographic optical element (HOE). Different cylindrical waves produce diffracted beams in different directions through HOE. Double-LED type and diffuser type are proposed to improve the uniformity of the proposed system. Experimental results indicate that this system can provide full resolution 3D images in 25 viewing zones, and the uniformity is improved to 80% average crosstalk is as low as 2.75% , which satisfy the demands for crosstalk, resolution, uniformity in the 3D display system, and the visual experience of viewers is greatly improved.

Abstract:Occlusion culling is an important process that produces correct depth cues for observers in holographic displays, whereas current methods suffer from occlusion errors or high computational loads. We propose a fast and effective method for occlusion culling based on multiple light-point sampling planes and an inverse orthographic projection technique. Multiple light-point sampling planes are employed to remove the hidden surfaces for each direction of the view of the three-dimensional (3D) scene by forward orthographic projection, and the inverse orthographic projection technique is used to determine the effective sampling points of the 3D scene. A numerical simulation and an optical experiment are performed. The results show that this approach can realize accurate occlusion effects, smooth motion parallax, and continuous depth using low angular sampling without any extra computation costs. Achromatic diffractive liquid-crystal optics for virtual reality displays

Abstract:Diffractive liquid-crystal optics is a promising optical element for virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality as it provides an ultrathin formfactor and lightweight for human factors and ergonomics. However, its severe chromatic aberrations impose a big challenge for full-color display applications. In this study, we demonstrate an achromatic diffractive liquid-crystal device to overcome this longstanding chromatic aberration issue. The proposed device consists of three stacked diffractive liquid crystal optical elements with specifically designed spectral response and polarization selectivity. The concept is validated by both simulations and experiments. Our experimental results show a significant improvement in imaging performance with two types of light engines: a laser projector and an organic light-emitting diode display panel. In addition, our simulation results indicate that the lateral color shift is reduced by ~100 times in comparison with conventional broadband diffractive liquid-crystal lens. Potential applications for VR-enabled metaverse, spatial computing, and digital twins that have found widespread applications in smart tourism, smart education, smart healthcare, smart manufacturing, and smart construction are foreseeable.

Abstract:We develop a compact full-color augmented reality near-eye display system with a multicolor holographic optical combiner and a freeform relay system. The digital image is produced by a full-color micro organic light-emitting diode (Micro-OLED) display module. The freeform relay system includes four freeform optics and a holographic optical mirror, which are employed to correct both the monochromatic and chromatic aberrations caused by the holographic optical combiner. The two multicolor holographic mirrors have a three-layer laminated structure and are delicately fabricated to yield an improved diffractive efficiency and a reduced efficiency difference for red, green, and blue colors. The high degrees of freedom of freeform optics, and the thin and light nature of the holographic optical combiner yield a compact form factor near-eye display system with a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 20° and the eye-box of 5 mm × 5 mm. Two prototypes are built to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed display system.

Abstract:Glasses-free augmented reality (AR) 3D display has attracted great interest in its ability to merge virtual 3D objects with real scenes naturally, without the aid of any wearable devices. Here we propose an AR vector light field display based on a view combiner and an off-the-shelf purchased projector. The view combiner is sparsely covered with pixelated multilevel blazed gratings (MBG) for the projection of perspective virtual images. Multi-order diffraction of the MBG is designed to increase the viewing distance and vertical viewing angle. In a 20-inch prototype, multiple sets of 16 horizontal views form a smooth parallax. The viewing distance of the 3D scene is larger than 5 m. The vertical viewing angle is 15.6°. The light efficiencies of all views are larger than 53%. We demonstrate that the displayed virtual 3D scene retains natural motion parallax and high brightness while having a consistent occlusion effect with natural objects. This research can be extended to applications in areas such as human–computer interaction, entertainment, education, and medical care.
