Abstract:The structural stability, electronic structure, and superconductivity of cubic sodium hexaboride NaB6 are calculated from first principles using density functional theory (DFT). The calculations of phonon dispersion spectra, formation energy, and elastic constants indicate that the cubic NaB6 is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable, respectively. The cubic NaB6 has lower formation energy compared with the experimentally synthesized KB6. The calculated band structure and PDOS demonstrate the metallicity of NaB6. The superconducting transition temperatures at ambient pressure for NaB6 and KB6 are predicted to be 15.7 K with lambda= 0.60 and 14.6 K with lambda= 0.57, respectively.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of LaBa2Cu3−xLixOy (0⩽x⩽0.7) and La1+xBa2−xCu3−xLixOy (0⩽x⩽0.7) were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The structure and physical properties were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity, infrared (IR) transmission spectra and electronic spin resonance (ESR). With Li doping, an orthorhombic–tetragonal transition takes place as 0.3<x⩽0.5. While for La1+xBa2−xCu3−xLixOy, the system remains orthorhombic structure within the entire doping range. Li doping and Li, La co-doping induce charge redistribution in the two systems and the single Li doping causes Cu2+ spins to localize, especially for the x⩾0.5 samples. The changes of the IR and ESR spectra are analysed and discussed in detail.

Abstract:For the first time, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been employed for the measurement of the structural, mechanical, optical, and electrical properties of a bismuth-layered structure ferroelectrics (BLSFs) family member possessing an orthorhombic structure with Cmc21 space group. Based on the exchange–correlation approximation, our calculations show that Pb2Bi4Ti5O18 possesses an indirect band gap, while the materials X2Bi4Ti5O18 (X = Ba, Ca, and Sr) demonstrate direct band gap, where the estimated density functional fundamental band gap values lie between 1.84 to 2.33 eV, which are ideal for photovoltaic applications. The optical performance of these materials has been investigated by tuning the band gaps. The materials demonstrated outstanding optical characteristics, such as high absorption coefficients and low reflection. They exhibited impressive absorption coefficient (α = 105 cm−1) throughout a broad energy range, especially in the visible spectrum (105 cm−1 region). The findings show that the compounds demonstrate lower reflectivity in the visible and UV regions, making them suitable for single-junction photovoltaic cells and optoelectronic applications. The Voigt–Reuss–Hill averaging technique has been employed to derive elastic parameters like bulk modulus (B), Young's modulus, shear modulus (G), the Pugh ratio (B/G) and the Frantesvich ratio (G/B) at 0.1 GPa. The mechanical stability of the compounds was analyzed using the Born stability criteria. Pugh's ratio and Frantesvich's ratio show that all the compounds are ductile, making them ideal for flexible optical applications.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline particles of LaB6, SmB6 and Sm-doped LaB6 have been prepared by a solid-state reaction in order to investigate the optical properties of ternary rare-earth hexaborides. The sizes of prepared nanoparticles range from dozens to more than 200 nm, as confirmed by XRD, SEM and TEM examinations. The optical property concerning the absorption spectra was tested with ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-vis-NIR) absorption spectrum. All samples exhibit high absorbance in NIR range and UV range. The increase of Sm-doping amount shifts the position of minimum absorptance value of LaB6 to the long-wave direction. Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to interpret the optical properties of Sm-doped LaB6, and results indicate that Sm 4f states change the DOS at near Fermi surface of LaB6 after Sm doping and the reduced number of conduction electrons results into the change of absorption spectra. Abstract:Cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ), zirconium dioxide (ZrO 2 ) and tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) also known as ceria, are fascinating materials with a wide range of applications due to their unique properties. To investigate the doping response of La in of XO 2 (X = Ce, Zr, Sn) generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBEsol) based on CASTEP (Cambridge Serial Total Energy Package) code with ultra-soft pseudo-potential (USP) plane wave method is used. The incorporation of La in pure material shows a significant reduction of band gap and enhances the conductivity of the material. The bandgap narrowing primes to the maximum optical absorption in the visible light region. To assess the mechanical stability, the elastic responses, including the bulk Poisson's ratios, and Young's modulus calculate the significant hardness and ductile nature of the materials. The nature of the materials for optoelectronic applications, such as solar cells, is evident in the optical characteristics, including real and fictitious components of the dielectric constant, refractive index, absorption, and energy loss function. The computation of the structural, electronic, mechanical, and optical responses validates its significance for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Isoprenoids found in all living organisms comprise essential components of biological systems such as sterols, carotenoids, dolichols, ubiquinones and prenylated proteins. These compounds are synthesized by consecutive condensations of the five-carbon precursors, isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP), to its isomer, dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP). Two distinct pathways for these precursors are known. One is the classical mevalonate pathway that operates in eucaryotes, archaebacteria and the cytosol of higher plants1). The other is a recently discovered pathway, the nonmevalonate pathway, which is used by many eubacteria including actinomycetes, green algae and the chloroplasts of higher plants1). To date, five reaction steps and the corresponding enzymes for this new pathway have been identified and characterized2). These findings raised an interesting question with regard to the biosynthesis of Isoprenoids by the genus Streptomyces which belongs to the actinomycetes, since some of the isoprenoid metabolites such as pentalenolactone3), carquinostatin4), longestin (KS-505a)5), novobiocin6,7), moenomycin8,9) and teleocidin10) were biosynthesized through the nonmevalonate pathway, while metabolites such as naphterpin11,12), furaquinocin13), napyradiomycin14) and terpentecin15) were proved to be of mevalonate pathway origin (Fig. 1). In addition, we have also shown that Streptomyces sp. strain CL190 (a naphterpin producer) utilizes the nonmevalonate pathway for the production of the primary metabolite, menaquinone, and that this organism switched to the mevalonate pathway for the biosynthesis of the secondary metabolite, naphterpin, at a later stage of fermentation12). To date, there seems to be no taxonomic criteria to distinguish Streptomyces species with the mevalonate pathway from those with only the nonmevalonate pathway. Abstract:A series of novel lead free tungsten bronze (T-B) structured Ba 4 (La 2-x Bi x )Fe 2 Nb 8 O 30 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.25) were formulated by traditional high temperature solid-state method and calcined at 1200 °C. The structural property was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Tetragonal structure was confirmed from Rietveld analysis. The scanning electron micrograph (SEM) shows uniform distribution of rod-shaped grains with less porosity. The UV–vis analysis shows that the materials have band gaps in the range 2.17–2.29 eV which makes them useful for photocatalytic applications. The dielectric measurement of the samples was carried out in a broad range of frequency as well as temperature. The impedance of the materials falling off with the rise in temperature showing their negative temperature coefficient (NTCR) behavior. The variation of polarization with electric field confirms the ferroelectric nature of the samples.

Designing Optically Transparent and Electrically Conducting BaSnO3 and SrSnO3 Perovskite Oxide Compounds Using First-Principles Calculations

Abstract:ASnO3 (A=Ba, Sr) are unique perovskite oxides in that they have superior electron conductivity despite their wide optical band gaps. Using first-principles band structure calculations, we show that the small electron effective masses, thus, good electron conductivity of ASnO3 can be attributed to the large size of Sn in this system that gives the conduction band edge with antibonding Sn and O s characters. Moreover, we show that ASnO3 can be easily doped by La with shallow LaA(+/0) donor level. Our results, therefore, explained why the perovskite BaSnO3, SrSnO3, and their alloys are promising candidates for transparent conducting oxides.

Abstract:Crystal structures of a series of La1-xCexIn3 (x = 0.02, 0.2, 0.5, or 0.8) intermetallic compounds have been investigated by both neutron and X-ray diffraction, and their physical properties have been characterized by magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Our results emphasize atypical atomic displacement parameters (ADP) for the In and the rare-earth sites. Depending on the x value, the In ADP presents either an "ellipsoidal" elongation (La-rich compounds) or a "butterfly-like" distortion (Ce-rich compounds). These deformations have been understood by theoretical techniques based on the band theory and are the result of hybridization between conduction electrons and 4f-electrons.

Abstract:In crystal engineering, it is an effective and controllable approach to modify the electronic band structure and optimize crystal performances using rational chemical cosubstitution in a classic structure model. Herein, the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) rare-earth borate fluoride La2B5O9F3 was designed and synthesized successfully based on the extraordinarily stable M2B5O9X (M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Sn, Pb, and Eu; X = Cl, Br, and I) template. Moreover, all 70 rare-earth borate halides were discussed, and the ratio of crystallization in NCS group is only 17.1%, much lower than 34.9% in all anhydrous borates. Benefiting from the substitution of [MOX] by [LaOF] polyhedra with improved hyperpolarizability and anisotropy of polarizability, compared with the M2B5O9X family, La2B5O9F3 with optimized band structure exhibits the suitable SHG response (1.2 × KH2PO4 (KDP) @ 1064 nm), large band gap (6.58 eV), and moderate birefringence, which well achieves the optimal balance among the three critical parameters mentioned above for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications in the short-wavelength region. Abstract:(1-x)Ba0.6Sr0.4La4Ti4O15-xBa(5)Nb(4)O(15) (x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15 and 0.2, BSLT-BN) ceramic samples were prepared by co-firing the mixtures of Ba0.6Sr0.4La4Ti4O15 and Ba5Nb4O15 powders. Crystal structure, microwave dielectric properties and thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC) of the BSLT-BN series ceramics were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that all the samples exhibit a hexagonal perovskite structure, which implies that the BSLT-BN mixtures form solid solutions. With increasing Ba5Nb4O15 content, the diffraction peaks shift to low angles and the sintering temperature of BSLT-BN decreases. Raman spectra analysis reveals the shifting and splitting of the vibration modes. The microwave dielectric properties of the well-sintered (1-x)BSLT-xBN ceramics vary with Ba5Nb4O15 content. The dielectric permittivity of the ceramics exhibits a slight decreasing trend. The quality factor varies in the range of 45000-11200GHz, whereas near-zero temperature coefficients of the resonant frequency may be achieved by changing the Ba5Nb4O15 content. TSDC was utilized to explore the extrinsic loss mechanism associated with defects. TSDC relaxation peaks are mainly generated by oxygen vacancies, and the Ba5Nb4O15 content has a significant influence on the TSDC spectra.

Abstract:Experiment on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of samples of Bi2Sr2−xLaxCaCu2Oy has been performed to investigate the distribution of La atoms on the cation sites and the change of valence of Bi and Cu atoms. The analysis indicates that La mostly takes the place of Sr at Sr sites. An increase in the average valence of Bi and a decrease in that of Cu have been observed. The resistivity and thermoelectric power (TEP) of the samples have also been measured. The two-band model is applied to analyse the results of TEP.

Abstract:Crystal phases growth with corresponding preferential orientations plays a key role in determining functional characteristics of thin films. Here, a detailed comparison study on optical transmission and carrier transport of Ba0.96La0.04SnO3 (BLSO) films which was fabricated on (001) and (111)-oriented SrTiO3 substrate were reported. Two kinds of films all show a high optical transmittance (similar to 82.5%) in the visible region. However, the optical transmittance of (001)-oriented film depends strongly on film thickness while the (111)-oriented film shows independence of film thickness. Although their electronic transports display a typical metallic behavior, the actual resistivity of (111)-film is two times larger than that of (001)-film. Based on the density functional calculation, we find that the charge distributions of Sn and 0 are much more denser on (001)-plane than (111)plane, indicating that (001)-plane not only has a larger carrier concentration but also the electrons transport more easily on it, A phenomenological model was also applied to quantify the resistivity ration rho(111)/rho(001) = 1.7, basically comparable to the experimental value of 2.5. Our results will offer experimental basis and theoretical reference for the design and application of perovskite BLSO transparent conducting films.
A-site cation manipulation of exemplary second harmonic generation response and optical anisotropy in rare-earth borates

Abstract:Ultraviolet nonlinear optical (UV NLO) materials have garnered significant interest for their prospective applications in advanced laser technologies. However, tailoring the desired structure in these materials remains a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a simple yet effective strategy for synthesizing rare-earth borates, K x Na3-x La2B3O9 (x = 2-3), by manipulating the A-site cations to induce structural evolution. Notably, K x Na3-x La2B3O9 undergoes a phase transition from the Pnc2 to the Amm2 space group by adjusting the K+ content to reach x = 2.6. Moreover, the target compounds exhibit strong phase-matching second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiencies, ranging from 1.3 to 3.3 times that of KDP (KH2PO4), and feature short UV cutoff edges of around 204-208 nm. Additionally, the correlation between microscopic polarizability, optical anisotropy, and the structural evolution of these materials was characterized through structural and theoretical analyses. These findings highlight the potential applications of K x Na3-x La2B3O9 as UV NLO materials and underscore the viability of manipulating A-site cations to fabricate NLO crystals with desirable properties.

Abstract:This paper reports the calculation of electronic structure and linear optical properties of LiB3O5 (LBO), CsB3O5 (CBO), and BaB2O4 (BBO) crystals using the linearized augmented plane-wave band method. It is found that the top of their valence bands consists of O orbitals, while the boron has almost no contribution. The linkage between (B3O7)(5-) anionic groups in the crystalline state is the main cause of making the gap of LBO and CBO larger than BBO's. The near-edge interband transition contains the contribution of the trigonal coordinated B-O bands in the final state for LBO. For CBO and BBO, the final state consists mainly of cation states at the bottom of the conduction bands. In this case, however, the transition from the O derived valence states to these cation states is quite weak; strong transition only appears till about 1 eV above the absorption edge when B-O orbitals are also involved in the final states.
Structural, vibrational and electronic properties of Nb substituted orthovanadates LaV$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_4$

Abstract:We investigate the structural, vibrational, morphological, and electronic properties of Nb substituted orthovanadate LaV$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_4$ samples prepared by the solid-state reaction method. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis reveals the presence of three crystal structures [monoclinic monazite ($m-m$) type for the $x=$ 0, two-phase equilibrium of monoclinic monazite ($m-m$) and tetragonal scheelite ($t-s$) type for the 0.2$\leq$$x$$\leq$0.8, and monoclinic fergusonite ($m-f$) type for the $x=$ 1 samples] with an increase in Nb$^{5+}$ concentration. The Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to study the vibrational and electronic properties of all the samples, respectively. In order to choose an excitation wavelength that does not cause undesirable fluorescence and has observable intensities of all the vibrational modes, the Raman spectra are collected using 532 nm, 633 nm, and 785 nm laser lines. With increasing the Nb$^{5+}$ concentration, new Raman modes associated with Nb-bonds are clearly visible and the intensity of V-bonds assigned modes is decreasing. The XPS analysis shows the unchanged 3+ oxidation state of La ion where the intensity of the V 2$p$ core-level decreases while the Nb 3$d$ core-level increases with $x$. The equal spin-orbit energy splitting of the states is confirmed by the average energy difference (across La core-level spectra for all the samples) for state I as well as bonding and anti-bonding of state II. Interesting, the relative intensity of La 3$d$ state I and state II show systematic change with Nb doping altering the metal ligand overlap. We discuss and provide insight into the evolution of the structural, morphological, and chemical features with Nb substitution in LaV$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_4$ samples.

Structural Phase Transition Due to La Substitution in Bi4ti3o12

Abstract:The structure of Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (BLaTx) as a function of La content from x = 0.00 to 1.25 was studied by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was observed that the Raman modes evolve discontinuously at about x = 1.00, which indicates a structural phase transition. Specifically, the B2g and B3g Raman modes shown evidences to coalesce into Eg modes with increasing La content. The evolution of Raman modes corresponds to the weakening of ferroelectric orthorhombic lattice distortion with increasing La substitution when x 1.00 and the final transition into the paraelectric tetragonal structure at higher La content. XRD and electrical measurement results confirm this phase transition by the observation that diffraction peaks from (200) and (020) planes of BLaT0.75 coalesce into one peak in BLaT1.25 and by the corresponding disappearance of remanent polarisation. The impact of La substitution on electrical properties of BLaTx is discussed briefly.

Abstract:The techniques of melt-quenching have been used to generate 53B2O3—2NaF—27PbO – $(20-x)$ BaO—$x$ La2O3 $(0\le x \ge 15) glass system$. XRD patterns have been established the amorphous character of glass samples. There is a clear evidence of the role of the La2O3 modifier in the glass network. The thermal characteristics have been identified to increase with an increase in La2O3 content. Increasing La2O3 increases the linear and non-linear optical bandgap energy and the Urbach energy. By adding La2O3 to the glass samples, the refractive index, molar polarizability, polarizability, and optical basicity increased. The bulk modulus and the glass transition temperature increased because of the increase in bond strength. The number of bonds per unit increased with the increase in La2O3 content because of the modifier character of La2O3 in the glass samples. Many optical parameters (ε $\boldsymbol{\infty }$), (εo), ${\chi }^{(1)}$, $\left({\chi }^{(3)}\right)$ and ${(n}_{2})$ as a function of linear and non-linear ${E}_{opt}$ have been obtained. The extent of shielding in this article has been examined with the increment in La2O3 at the expense of BaO. The results correspond with similar studies conducted before.

Abstract:Four layer-structured Sodium Bismuth Titanate Aurivillius ferroelectric ceramics with composition Na 0.5 Bi 4.5− x La x Ti 4 O 15 ( x = 0.0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0) were prepared using conventional solid state reaction method. The existence of main diffraction peak (119), confirms the four layer structure which corresponds to the highest diffraction peak (112 m + 1) observed in typical BLSF's XRD pattern. The co-existence of orthorhombic and tetragonal symmetry is validated with splitting observed in diffraction peak (200/020) and merging of these diffraction peaks at La rich compositions advocate structural transformation leading towards tetragonal symmetry. Williamson–Hall method was used to enumerate the crystallite size and micro strain, with the appropriate consideration of peak broadening parameters of individual peaks. Plate like grain evolution in microstructure of prepared samples were identified with images obtained from Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Deconvolution of the obtained Raman curves were done into their individual Gaussian components and different modes were obtained around 78, 102, 142, 221, 265, 345, 462, 552 ,736 and 854 cm −1 . The modes obtained below 200 cm −1 are low frequency modes which are assumed to be due to A-site distortion and modes obtained above 200 cm −1 are high frequency modes which are due to tilting and rotation of TiO 6 octahedron. The blue shifting of vibrational modes attribute to substitution of heavier Bi 3+ (208.9 amu) ions with comparatively lighter element La 3+ (138.9 amu). The present study revealed that presence of La ions in four layer structured lead to tetragonal symmetry and optimum polarizability can be achieved with selective concentration of La ( x = 0.75 ) in present BLSF.
