Abstract:Small-sized microplastics (MPs) pose concerns about potential risks to both the environment and human health. However, research on MP pollution is hampered by limitations in the detection techniques. Also, few studies have provided insight into the release of small-sized MPs from disposable polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-bottled drinks for outdoor usage. Thus, PET bottles’ potential to release small MPs sized 1–100 μm outdoors was studied in relation to physical and chemical parameters (temperature, sunlight irradiation, and drink characteristics) using flow cytometry and Nile Red dye. The results showed that temperatures below 80 °C had little effect on the release of MPs from PET bottles. Sunlight irradiation and alkalinity were prone to promote the generation of MPs, mostly 1–5 μm in size. Moreover, the combined impact test implied that two pairings—acidity with temperature and alkalinity with sunlight—positively affected MP release, with maximum releases of 21,622 ± 2477 particles/L and 31,081 ± 7173 particles/L, respectively. Based on the rapid quantification of small-sized MPs using flow cytometry after Nile Red selection, the results hereby presented will assist researchers in reducing MP release and aid them in the evaluation of MPs’ contamination of aquatic environments.
Longitudinal and Vertical Distribution of Microplastics in Various Pipe Scales in an Operating Drinking Water Distribution System.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ingested by humans through the daily consumption of drinking water. Pipe scales are recognized as important sites of MPs occurrence in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS). Despite extensive research on drinking water, no study has been conducted to investigate the distribution of MPs in pipe scales within an operational DWDS. The underground placement of DWDSs brings challenges for sampling pipe scales. In this study, 5 tap water and 16 pipe scales samples were collected from a typical DWDS. The analysis of MPs abundance in these 21 samples filled the data gap in the distribution of MPs in both pipe scales and tap water along the DWDSs. MPs were detected in all water samples (1.74-20.88 MPs/L) and pipe scales samples (0.03-3.48 MPs/cm2). In tap water, MPs abundance increased abruptly in the stagnant-slow flow region and reached the maximum value (20.88 MPs/L), even surpassing the abundance in raw water (6.42 MPs/L). In the pipe scales, MPs abundance decreased from the upstream to downstream of DWDS and was associated with the heavy metal concentration. MPs smaller than 150 & mu;m accounted for 91.6% of the tap water (21-971 & mu;m) and pipe scales (20-2055 & mu;m). The abundance of MPs showed a logarithmic increase as the size decreased. The proportion of MPs fibers in tap water was lower than that in pipe scales. A total of 35 MPs polymers were detected, with 34 polymers in pipe scales and 26 polymers in tap water. In terms of abundance, polyethylene terephthalate (50.0%) was the dominant polymer in pipe scales, while polyamide (70.3%) was the dominant polymer in tap water. Regarding detection rate, polyamide was detected in all 21 samples, followed by polyurethane in 19 samples. The distribution of MPs along the longitudinal direction of the DWDS was correlated with heavy metal. While the distribution of MPs in the vertical direction of large diameter pipe scales was dependent on their sizes, and densities. The greatest abundance, size and density of MPs were detected at the bottom 120-degree.
Urban Heat Island Effect over National Capital Region of India: A Study using the Temperature Trends

Abstract:The local temperature is one of the major climatic elements to record the changes in the atmospheric environment brought about by industrialization, increasing population and massive urbanization. The present study deals with the annual and seasonal temperature trends and anomalies for maximum, minimum and mean temperatures of the four meteorological stations of the National Capital Region (NCR) of India namely Safdarjung, Palam, Gurgaon and Rohtak for the past few decades and their association with the development through urbanization processes. The annual mean maximum temperature did not show any specific trend; however a consistent increasing trend was seen in the annual mean minimum temperatures indicating an overall warming trend over the NCR especially after 1990. This warming trend is contrary to the cooling trend observed by earlier studies till 1980’s in various other cities of India including Delhi. However, the temperature trends in annual mean minimum temperatures reported in various countries (USA, Turkey, Italy, etc.) across the world showed warming trends to be associated to the urbanization process of the cities also. The current warming trends in temperature in the NCR Delhi based on the annual mean minimum temperatures have thus been supported by the trends in other parts of the world and could be utilized to infer the development process in this region. The urbanization pattern within Delhi is reflected by the trends of differences in annual mean minimum temperature of the two stations within the city namely Safdarjung and Palam. The significance of the warming trends of the annual minimum temperature for the urban heat island effect is also discussed.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) (<5 mm) pollution is ubiquitous in various environments, and poses a significant threat to organisms in the ecosystem and even human health. Although efficient methods of MP analysis have been performed, the potential impacts of MPs in drinking water on humans is still lacking. Microplastics occurrence has been extensively described in media such as waters and soils, however little is known regarding their prevalence in our beverage sold in plastic packaging. In this study, we systematically analyzed 23 brands of bottled water in China for the presence of MPs (>25 μm) using focal plane array-based micro-Fourier transform infrared microscopy imaging. Two forms (fibers and fragments) and 11 types of MPs (polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide, polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide, polyethylene vinyl acetate, and cellulose) with sizes of 0.025–5.000 mm and abundances ranging from 2 particles/bottle to 23 particles/bottle were identified. Based on this investigation, MP contamination may originate from the raw water source and flakes from the packaging. The estimated daily intakes for adults and children were expected to be 0.274 M P/(kg·d) and 0.600 M P/(kg·d), respectively. These findings will help to achieve a full and proper assessment of MPs in drinking water in China.

Abstract:Groundwater (GW) plays a crucial role as the primary source of potable water in numerous developing nations. However, the increasing presence of microplastics (MPs) represents a concealed danger, threatening activities that guarantee safe drinking water in these countries. Despite this, there is limited awareness about the widespread existence of MPs in these regions of the world. In this study, we investigated the contamination levels, distribution, morphological characteristics, chemical composition, and associated public health risk of MPs in groundwater samples from six coastal districts of Bangladesh using stereomicroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). MPs were prevalent at all sampling stations, with average concentrations of 24.63 ± 16.13 items/L and a range of 4–75 items/L. The majority of MPs (97.6%) were fibers, indicating a likely origin from fabric disintegration during drying, washing, discarded fishing nets, personal care items, and municipal waste. Smaller-sized MPs (<0.5 mm), transparent and violet-colored, were predominantly observed. Additionally, FTIR confirmed the presence of plastic polymers, including low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and polyethylene terephthalate (PETE). Despite the high visibility observed or focus given for PETE, PE was found to be abundant. These are thought to have come from runoff from agricultural fields, seeping from landfills where plastic trash is disposed of, synthetic fabrics, and inappropriate plastic product disposal. Estimated dietary intake was recorded as 1.85 particles/person/day (i.e., 675 particles/year), suggesting the possible health risk to consumers. Hazard analyses based on the polymeric risk score revealed diverse risks associated with polymer levels, with PETE indicating a medium risk and other polymers, e.g., HDPE, LDPE, and EVA at 39%, 31%, and 17%, respectively, showing a minor risk to human health from drinking water from the studied sources. This is the first study from the regions, and the findings will be valuable for identifying sources, implementing control measures, shaping policies, and safeguarding public health against plastic pollution.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are widespread, minute plastic particles present in various aquatic environments, raising concerns about their effect on human health and ecosystems. The detrimental effects of MPs on the environment, include the contamination of ecosystems, harm to aquatic life through ingestion, potential disruption of food chains, and long-term ecological consequences. Despite numerous studies confirming the MP's presence in aquatic environments, research specifically focused on MPs in bottled drinking water (BDW) is limited. Research on MPs in drinking water is vital to assess potential health risks and develop strategies for ensuring water safety and quality. This study fills a research gap by investigating microplastics (MPs) in nine brands of BDW in the West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh, India. The average MP concentration in BDW was found to be 2.89 ± 0.48 items/L, with fibers being the predominant shape and sizes ranging from 500 to 1000 μm. Transparent and blue were the most common colors. From ATR-FTIR analysis, the dominant polymer found was polypropylene (PP) followed by polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The human risk assessment was also calculated using the formula of Estimated daily intake (EDI) and Lifetime intake (LTI). The calculation found that the EDI of MPs for children and adults ranged from 0.041 to 0.291 MPs per kilogram per day and 0.019 to 0.133 MPs per kilogram per day, respectively. The mean LTI of MP consumption of an individual, ranged from 17,958 to 2,54,861 MPs, considering an average age of 75 years. The current findings offer valuable information for ongoing evaluations of the potential human risks linked to MP exposure.
Microplastic contamination in a conventional wastewater treatment plant in Thailand

Abstract:Plastic waste has become a global environmental concern. One type of plastic waste is microplastics (MPs), which can spread easily in the environment. Wastewater effluent is one of the land-based sources of MPs. This study investigates the amount of microplastic (MP) pollution in an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Thailand. Water samples were collected and examined to find the types, morphology and sources of MPs. Wastewater was filtered through a set of sieves ranging from 5 mm to 0.05 mm. Sludge samples were also collected to find the potential risk from the application of dried sewage sludge. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to confirm the types of MPs. The amount of MPs in the influent was 26.6 ± 11.8 MPs/L. More than one-third of MP particles were removed after a grit trap, followed by 14.24% removal in the secondary treatment. If the peak flow rate of the WWTP is reached, 2.32 × 10 9 MP particles can be released daily. The amount of MPs in a sludge sample was 8.12 ± 0.28 × 10 3 particles/kg dry weight. Dry sludge is one of the potential sources of MP contamination in agricultural soil. Most MPs in the liquid fraction and sludge sample were fibres. Results from FTIR analysis showed that the major types of MPs in the WWTP were polyester fibres, followed by polypropylene, polyethylene, silicone polymer and polystyrene. This finding indicates that a conventional WWTP may act as a path by which MPs enter the environment.

Abstract:The quantification analysis of microplastics (MPs) in bottled water, purified tap water and branded table salt was executed by double-shot pyrolysis–gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py–GC/MS), and the concentration was expressed as a mass concentration, which was more suitable for the data comparison. MPs including polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonate (PC), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) were separated by filtration with glass fiber filter membranes. After being folded, the whole glass filter membrane containing MPs was transferred into a pyrolysis cup directly to avoid the sample loss during transfer. The characteristic pyrolysates were used to identify and quantify PMMA, PET, PC, PP, PS and PE. The linear relationships were found between the polymer weight amount and peak areas of each characteristic pyrolysates with the correlation coefficients larger than 0.993. The intra-day precisions of the pyrolysates for peak areas were 0.56–18.94%, and the inter-day variability was 8.47–19.88%. The recovery values of the spiked standards were in a range of 81.5–114.5%. MPs in bottled water, purified tap water and branded table salt samples were successfully quantified by the proposed Py–GC/MS method. For four brands of bottled water samples, 0.088 μg/L PET was found in one sample. PP was detected in all purified tap water samples from five brands with the concentrations between 0.028 and 0.489 μg/L, and PE was detected in purified tap water samples from two brands with the concentrations between 0.194 and 1.26 μg/L. As for nine table salt samples, PP were found in a range of 4.00–182.80 μg/100 g salt in eight table salt samples. Due to the high content of MPs in purified tap water samples and large daily consumption, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of MPs from purified tap water was calculated. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) for adults are 2.57 ng PP/kg/d and 4.17 ng PE/kg/d from purified tap water; the EDIs for children are 5.63 ng PP/kg/d and 9.11 ng PE/kg/d from purified tap water.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution has received widespread attention; however, its occurrence and distribution in water supply systems, particularly in pipe scales, remains unclear. In this study, MPs were observed in water and pipe scale samples from the drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) and distribution system (DWDS), respectively. The MP concentrations ranged from 13.23 to 134.79 n/L and 569.99 to 751.73 n/kg in the water and pipe scale samples, respectively. The predominant particles in the pipe scales (50-100 mu m) were smaller than those in the water samples (> 200 mu m). Overall, MP fragments were the most abundant. Of all the identified MPs, nylon and polyvinyl chloride were predominant in the water and pipe scale samples, respectively. Furthermore, the DWTP and DWDS both prevented MPs from entering the tap water, thereby reducing their risk. The results of this study provide direct evidence for the strong adsorption of MPs onto pipe scales, indicating that pipe scale stability may play a role in improving water quality and security. However, the abundance of MPs in pipe scales cannot be ignored. Additionally, the results provide valuable background information on MP pollution in water supply systems. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. Is there tea complemented with the appealing flavor of microplastics? A pioneering study on plastic pollution in commercially available tea bags in Bangladesh

Abstract:Microplastic pollution is a global concern, mainly due to its adverse effects on organisms and ecosystems. However, our knowledge of its impact on humans, in particular, is still very limited. Thus, while we have not gathered definitive information on their consequences, studies that aim to identify the MP's sources constitute subsidies to better understand the various exposure pathways to these pollutants. Thus, we investigated the possible presence of MP-like particles in teabag samples (of different brands) obtained in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Surprisingly, all analyzed samples (five brands) were contaminated with MPs. Fragments and fibers were identified in a higher percentage, and a wide variety of colors was identified, with a predominance of brown, blue, and red colors. Scanning electron microscope images of teabags exhibited net-like structures of fiber particles with a smooth surface. Furthermore, we observed irregularly shaped MPs and rougher surfaces and fragments in the process of detachment from the main fiber, oxidation flakes, and fracture-like. The average size of these pollutants was between 200.6 and 220.7 μm, and the polymer types identified via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were polytetrafluoroethylene, high-density polyethylene, polycarbonate, nylon, polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluoroethylene, ethylene-vinyl acetate, cellulose acetate, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, the last three being the most frequent in the analyzed samples. Finally, we noticed that MPs from tea bags in Dhaka could cause an average emission of 10.9 million grams of MPs/year. Although the teabags analyzed in our study are not "complemented with the appealing flavor of MPs", it is very likely that tea ingestion in Dhaka is accompanied by the concomitant ingestion of plastic particles making teabags an important route of human exposure to these micropollutants.
Occurrence, removal and potential threats associated with microplastics in drinking water sources

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have gained increasing attention as an emerging contaminant in drinking water. However, there is no definitive conclusion on the deleterious effects of MPs on human health. Herein, we consider the potential threats of these anthropogenic particles that have been increasingly found in drinking water sources (DWSs) based on reviewing their occurrence and removal from a water treatment perspective. As revealed by 53 publications on MP presence in conventional DWSs, bulk sampling can better reflect the current knowledge on the pollution in DWSs; the median MP concentration in conventional water sources was 2.2 × 103 items m−3 with the size of particles identified usually >50 μm. Next, the removal efficiency of MPs across multiple barriers in drinking water treatment plants was also elaborated. Almost all MPs (>10 μm) were removed after coagulation, sedimentation and filtration processes. For smaller MPs (>1 μm), removal rates of >80 % were typically observed. Two size-dependent threats associated with MPs in DWSs were identified: 1) the increased probability of the accumulation of potential pathogenic bacteria and the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes where larger MPs in DWSs may serve as important carriers; 2) the release of nanoplastics and dissolved organic carbon from the photodegradation process of MPs. Additionally, MPs in alternative DWSs were given special attention due to their potential to accumulate MPs. The review provides new information for practitioners and scientists alike with respect to the potential threats posed by MPs in DWSs.

Microplastics in Malaysian bottled water brands: Occurrence and potential human exposure

Abstract:The World Health Organization noted that there is a growing need to determine the occurrence of microplastics in bottled water and its potential risks to human health. Thus, present study analyzes microplastics in eight major bottled water brands available in Malaysia and estimates the potential human exposure. Membrane filtration method followed by visual and polymer identifications were utilized to identify microplastics particles in these eight major bottled water brands. Microplastic concentrations in bottled water samples ranged from 8 to 22 particles/L, with an average of 11.7 ± 4.6 particles/L. Particle sizes ranging between 100 and 300 μm were dominant and accounted for approximately 31% in these bottled water brands. Fragments were the most identified microplastics in bottled water with transparent color being the most prevalent. The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) polymer types found in this study are consistent with prior results in that microplastics in bottled water are mainly derived from packaging materials and bottle caps. The Estimated Dietary Intake (EDI) for adults was between 0.068 and 0.19 particle/kg/day, while the EDI for children was between 0.089 and 0.25 particle/kg/day. Although consumption of bottled water was estimated to have low EDI values, the potential risks to human health should be heeded due to the presence of numerous plastic additives and residual monomers in these particles, which have the potential to increase inflammatory reactions and cytotoxicity in human body. Future studies should concentrate on understanding microplastics particles less than 1.5 μm and other associated factors (bottled material quality, consumption behaviour, bottled water storage conditions, and the frequency of bottle opening and closing) to further understand the effects of these microplastics particles on human toxicological aspects.
Microplastics in commercial fish digestive tracts from freshwater habitats in Northern Thailand

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) contamination in fish species was one of the emerging environmental issues as a result of the widespread presence of plastic pollution in the environment. The presence of MPs in Thailand's freshwater was scant, and in contrast to other countries, little was known about the presence of this contaminant in freshwater fish. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the abundance, characteristics, and variation of MPs in various Thai commercial freshwater fish species. In order to compare the differences in MP ingestion rates across different feeding zones, 166 fish representing 24 species from various feeding zones were collected. MPs were found in the gastrointestinal tracts (GIT) of all fish samples tested, which was a substantially larger number than previously reported in other locations. Of all the fish species, Anabas testudineus, Labeo rohita, and Oreochromis mossambicus had the highest concentration of MPs (34.90 ± 21.43, 34.50 ± 7.78, 34.10 ± 11.15 items/individuals). Microscopical examinations showed that the majority of MPs were fiber-shaped and blue in color. Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR) showed that the polymers found in fish GIT were polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl acetate, poly (methyl vinyl ether), poly (methyl vinyl ether), polybutadiene, poly (ethylene-co-propylene), poly (ethylene glycol) tetrahydrofurfuryl ether, poly (methyl phenyl siloxane), poly (styrene-co-divinylbenzene), and polyvinylidene fluoride. The results of this study demonstrate that demersal fish had a higher concentration of MPs than benthopelagic and pelagic fish, indicating that plastic ingestion in fish may be related to the feeding habitat. However, it was not discovered that differences in the fish's body weight and length affected the MPs' ingestion. Our findings will help people in Thailand understand which freshwater fish and fish from which feeding zones are more contaminated with MPs for human consumption.
Microplastic pollution and human risk assessment in Turkish bottled natural and mineral waters

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), which arise from the deterioration of larger plastics that are frequently used in daily life and are smaller than 5 mm in size, are found in many environments and can pose a serious threat to human health. Humans ingest these microplastics unintendedly through drinking water. Although plastic pollution has been extensively investigated in a variety of water sources, research on MP contamination in bottled waters is scarce. Hence, in this study, the presence and distribution of MPs were investigated in 150 samples of bottled natural and mineral water brands in Türkiye. Using FTIR stereoscopy and stereomicroscope analysis, MPs were detected in 43 out of the 50 (86%) of these brands. Among the four types of polymers detected, the most abundant type was polyethylene (33%), polypropylene (31%), polyethylene terephthalate (25%), and polyamid (11%). In comparison to natural waters, mineral waters had larger average-sized particles (63.98 ± 4.06 vs. 104.83 ± 14.28 μm) and higher MP concentrations (4.6 ± 0.5 vs. 12.6 ± 1.6 particles/L). Although the most dominant shape was found as fiber in natural waters, fragments were more prevalent in mineral waters. The estimated daily intakes (EDI) for adults and children were expected to be 0.019 and 0.42 MP/kg/bw/day, respectively, in natural waters while EDI were 0.009 and 0.04 MP/kg/bw/day, respectively, in mineral waters. The results of the study suggest that the EDI and annual intake (EAI) are negligible when compared to other studies. The baseline data on MP contamination of bottled water provided in the present study may be significant and useful for researchers to have a better understanding of microplastic contamination exposure.

Abstract:Aim: The commonly used analytical methods for microplastic (MPs) detection in drinking water and the threat of MP pollution in water intended for human consumption to human beings are presented through a systematic review. Furthermore, MP occurrence, transport, and fate from raw to treated drinking water, tap water, and bottled water, as well as the possible health impacts of MPs on human beings, are also evaluated. Methods: Systematic review included articles published in scientific journals that contain specific keywords in the title and were searched in Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus. The literature was selected and extracted by two reviewers based on the PRISMA-A guidelines, which recommend including 57 items. Results: The experimental studies pointed out that sampling is performed using grab or reduced samples, and sample treatment involves mostly oxidation with hydrogen peroxide and density separation. The minimum sample size obtainable in the extraction and the maximum density of the polymer separable from the matrix provided different results. Clearly, the determination of MPs involves the simultaneous application of several analytical techniques, including optical, fluorescence, and electronic microscopies, μFTIR, μ-Raman, and pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The determination technique also provides different results according to the sensitivity as well as the minimum size determinable. These studies are mostly devoted to establishing the occurrence, transport, and fate within the supply network, the efficiency in removal of MPs from drinking water by treatment plants, and the risk to humans. The MP concentration in drinking water reservoirs is highly variable. However, tap water always presents lower concentrations of MPs than the water that enters the drinking water treatment plants because the different treatments are efficient at removing MPs. Although it has not been fully demonstrated that MPs are toxic to humans, the effects point to oxidative stress, gastrointestinal irritation, microbiome irregularities, and changes in lipid metabolism. Conclusion: Analytical methods present some common features as a first step towards harmonization. However, it is still unknown whether the analytical methods could influence the disparity of the results. The MP concentration in drinking water is low in comparison to other types of water. MPs are not exempt from hazards to human health.

Abstract:The recent detection of microplastics (MPs) in a large number of commercially important food items and beverages, including tap water, has drawn significant attention because of direct exposure and negative health effects on humans. Nevertheless, there is insufficient information on microplastic contamination in the tap water of developing countries. In the present study, we primarily analyzed supplied tap water samples from four major cities in Bangladesh to determine and characterize MPs using a stereomicroscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Several indices were employed to calculate human health exposures to microplastics. MPs were found in all of the water samples tested, with an overall mean of 35.33 ± 19.55 particles/L. The results of this study diverge from those of comparable research conducted globally, revealing that tap water in Bangladesh exhibited higher levels of contamination compared to other nations. MPs were found in three different shapes (fibers, fragments, and films), with fibers dominating the samples (96.2%), and 98.1% of the microplastics were less than 0.5 mm in size. Six different colors of MPs were observed, and transparent particles were dominant (63.9% of all observed MPs). FTIR infrared spectrum analysis revealed two major types of polymers: low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The projected daily consumption of microplastics was determined to be 2.65 particles per person per day, raising potential concerns for human health. The findings show that the treatment process of the water supply system is inadequate. Additionally, the sources of microplastics in tap water may come from where the water was collected for treatment and may be linked to a variety of anthropogenic activities, such as urbanization, sewage discharge, industrial waste disposal, and runoff from catchment areas.
Investigating the pollution of bottled water by the microplastics (MPs): the effects of mechanical stress, sunlight exposure, and freezing on MPs release

Abstract:Bottled water is becoming more popular worldwide and possible contamination's need to be analyzed. Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants and have recently been regarded as an important contaminant in bottled water due to oral intake and possible threats to human health. In the present study, MP amounts in 23 popular Iranian brands of bottled water were determined by filtration and counting under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of mechanical stress, environmental factors, and freezing on MP release also were investigated. The average amounts of MPs in water samples were 1496.7 ± 1452.2 particles/L (199.8 to 6626.7 particles/L). The amounts of MPs in different brands was significantly different (p < 0.05). As much as 91.3% of detected particles had the size between 1 and 10 μm. The most likely polymers determined by FTIR spectroscopy was polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The freezing of water in the bottles did not show any significant effect on the MPs release, but mechanical stress to the bottles increased MP amounts in the water significantly. Environmental factors including sunlight exposure and the age of bottles showed the most degradative effects on the structure of polymers in the body of PET bottles and release of MPs. Regardless of their type, source and commercial brands, bottled water is contaminated with hundreds to thousands MPs/L. The main portion (above 90%) of these MPs are < 5 μm particles with considerable effects on human health.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) contamination is a public issue for the environment and for human health. Plastic-based food filter bags, including polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, nylon 6 (NY6), and polyethylene, are widely used for soft drink sub-packaging, increasing the risk of MPs in foods and the environment. Three types of commercially available filter bags, including non-woven and woven bags, were collected, and MPs released after soaking were mapped using Raman imaging combined with chemometrics. Compared with peak area imaging at a single characteristic peak, Raman imaging combined with direct classical least squares calculation was more efficient and reliable for identifying MP features. Up to 94% of the bags released MPs after soaking, and there was no significant correlation with soaking conditions. Most MPs were tiny fragments and particles, and a few were fibrous MPs 620–840 μm in size. Woven NY6 filter bags had the lowest risk of releasing MPs. Source exploration revealed that most MPs originated from fragments and particles adsorbed on the surface of bags and strings. The results of this study are applicable to filter bag risk assessment and provide scientific guidance for regulating MPs in food.
