Abstract:Cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) from plant biomass are of considerable interest, primarily due to their low density, biodegradability, mechanical strength, economic output, and renewability. Here, a new pretreatment method has been developed to produce CNWs based on supercritical CO2 and ethanol. The raw material was micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) and experimental factors were controlled to enhance the properties of CNWs produced using a ball-milling technique following supercritical CO2 pretreatment. Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were also prepared using a high-pressure Microfluidizer©. A comparative study was conducted of the properties of the raw materials, the CNWs and the CNFs. The solid yields of P-MFC after supercritical CO2 pretreatment gradually decreased, along with the temperature and the reaction time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the CNWs and CNFs show that the morphology of the CNWs was basically acicular, while that of the CNFs was mainly soft fibrous. Thermogravimetric analysis results suggest that the thermal stability of the CNWs was substantially higher than those of the CNFs and the raw material. XRD results indicate that the crystallinity showed an initial increasing trend and then declined with increasing temperature and reaction time, and the crystallinity value of CNWs was higher than that of CNFs. The smaller CNWs became rougher and had a larger surface area.
Controllable preparation and morphology regulation of nanocelluloses from waste paper by a green hydrolysis method

Abstract:This study focused on the morphology regulation of nanocelluloses (NCs) aiming at preparing NCs with the controllable properties. NCs with rod-shaped, spherical, and rod-shaped and spherical composite structures were prepared from waste paper by a green enzymatic hydrolysis. The critical enzyme concentration for the transition of NCs from one morphology to another was explored. Several analytical methods, including TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM, DSC and WCA, were employed to characterize the prepared NCs. The results showed that with the cellulase enzyme concentration lower than 6 μ/ml or higher than 30 μ/ml, the prepared NCs had a single rod-shaped or spherical structure. When the cellulase concentration was between 6 and 30 μ/ml, the prepared NCs had a composite morphology of rods and spheres. Besides, NCs with a composite morphology dominated by rod-like or spherical structures had a higher thermal stability. Moreover, NCs prepared with cellulase enzyme concentration of 6 and 35 μ/ml had the highest and lowest crystallinity of 81.7 % and 59.3 %, respectively. Hence, this work achieved the morphology and property regulation of NCs by a green method which expanded the application scope of NCs and realized the high value utilization of waste paper.
Preparation of nanocellulose in high yield via chemi-mechanical synergy

Abstract:Nanocellulose has gained increasing attention due to its excellent properties and wide application prospect. However, fast and low-waste preparation of nanocellulose is still challenging. Here, a time-saving and low-cost chemi-mechanical method was proposed to prepare cellulose nanocrystals (D-CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (D-CNFs) by dilute sulfuric acid hydrolysis and the homogenization of the un-hydrolyzed cellulose residues, respectively. After hydrolyzed by 0.3 wt% sulfuric acid at 160 °C for 2 h, the diameter and length distribution of the obtained D-CNCs were 16 ∼ 45 nm and 150 ∼ 600 nm, respectively. The yield of D-CNCs and D-CNFs reached to 15.78 % and 69.11 %. The thermostability of D-CNCs was more superior to CNCs manufactured by 64 wt% sulfuric acid. In conclusion, this approach offers a promising strategy for high yield of nanocellulose due to its easy operation and low pollution.

Abstract:Annually a tremendous amount of office waste paper (OWP) is discarded creating environmental pollution. Therefore, how to make this paper from waste to wealth and use it in new approaches have become a meaningful and challenging work. In this work, OWP being a cellulose rich biomass was employed for the production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) by acid hydrolysis with different acid concentrations but without subjecting OWP to alkali and bleaching treatments. The testing results showed that CNCs prepared using sulfuric acid concentration of 59% with respect to OWP had the highest crystallinity and this concentration was the transition concentration for the production of opaque CNCs film with convoluted nanofibers to transparent one with orientated nanofibers. Besides, CNCs prepared using acid concentration of 65% coated on PET sheet not only had a better water vapor barrier property but also was on a par with the transparency of PET, which was hopeful to be used as coating materials in packaging materials.

Abstract:The disposal of waste paper typically occurs through conventional garbage methods, leading to environmental pollution and the inefficient use of natural resources. This study seeks to transform these discarded materials into a valuable resource, thus mitigating a detrimental environmental impact and enhancing recycling efforts. The research employed both chemical and mechanical techniques to isolate cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) from waste paper. The papers were treated with 17.5% sodium hydroxide to remove certain minerals, followed by bleaching with sodium hypochlorite. This process effectively eliminated hemicelluloses, pectin, and lignin. Acid hydrolysis using hydrochloric acid was also performed at different concentrations, durations, and temperatures to improve treatment results. FTIR analysis showed that a sample treated with 3 M acid at 100 °C for two hours had the highest crystallization index. XRD confirmed a peak crystallinity index of 70%. SEM indicated optimal fibrillation at ambient temperature after two hours. TG analysis revealed a maximum degradation temperature of 361.6 °C, leading to 90% fiber destruction. The combination of chemical and mechanical techniques was highly effective for extracting CNFs.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are nanoscale particles made from cellulose. They have many unique properties such as being lightweight, stiff, and renewable, making them promising for a variety of applications in a wide range of industries, including materials science, energy storage, and biomedicine. In this paper, a two-stage (swelling-SA-catalyzed) method including IL pretreatment and solid acid hydrolysis process was developed to extract CNCs with high purity and good thermal stability from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). In the first stage, the swelling of MCC in ionic liquid was studied with the assistance of ultrasonication, and it was found that the amorphous regions became more disordered while the crystalline areas were selectively retained under the conditions of 30 min of reaction time, 45 °C of temperature, 2% of ionic liquid water content and 1:4 mass ratio of cellulose to ionic liquid. CNCs were extracted using solid acid hydrolysis, with a 45 wt% solid acid to cellulose ratio and a 5.0 h hydrolysis process at 45 °C. The morphology, crystallinity, surface characteristics and thermo stability of the sample were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Results demonstrated the highly thermostable CNCs were successful extracted with rodlike shape of 300 ± 100 nm in length and 20 ± 10 nm in width. Solid acid recovery and reuse were also studied, revealing a promising candidate that can reduce the environmental impact associated with chemical products.

Abstract:Waste cotton fibers are an ideal raw material for extracting nanocellulose crystals (CNCs), benefitting from their high cellulose content. In this study, the waste cotton fibers from the calendering finishing process were used to extract CNCs by sulfuric acid, TEMPO oxidation, and phosphoric acid methods, aiming to create a new way to reutilize the waste cotton fiber and also to verify the practicability that the phosphoric acid method can replace sulfuric acid and TEMPO oxidation methods. The CNCs obtained from the three methods are all in cellulose I state with an average length of 200-500nm and diameter of 15-20nm, indicating that the waste cotton fiber can extract CNCs. However, the CNCs from the phosphoric acid method showed the highest thermostability but the lowest crystallinity, while the ones from the sulfuric acid and TEMPO oxidation methods had higher crystallinity but lower thermal stability. Overall, the three methods are all acceptable for preparing CNCs, but the phosphoric acid method has more significant potential due to its low cost, environmental friendliness, and safety.

Abstract:Herein, carboxyl-rich cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were obtained through a designed TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl) mediated oxidation process without any subsequent mechanical treatment, which was proved to be widely suitable for commonly used cellulosic sources, including fibril-like fibers and lignocellulose biomasses. CNC prepared from the acid-free process showed better dispersion stability, less aggregation, higher aqueous UV transmittance and crystallinity compared with that from sulfuric acid hydrolysis process. Furthermore, the residuals in the insoluble precipitate were further conducted ultrasonic treatment and extra CNC was obtained from the oxidized cotton and ramie cellulose while cellulose nanofibril (CNF) was extracted from rice straw and pine powder, attributing to their different native structures. The total yields of nanocelluloses (NCs) were up to 63.2–68.3 %, improving the utilization ratio of the raw materials. This work provided a widely applicable acid- and mechanic-free route in fabricating CNC with inherent carboxyl groups and described an understanding of the relationship between the native structure of raw materials and their products, which is beneficial for improving the application of NCs.

Abstract:This research focuses on the preparation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from Pennisetum hydridum fertilized by municipal sewage sludge (MSS) through sulfuric acid hydrolysis in different acid concentrations (40–65%), temperature (room temperature ∼55°C), and reaction time (50–120 min). The results showed that the obtained CNC possessed stable dispersion in water. The length of CNCs reached 272.5 nm under the condition of room temperature (RT), 65% acid concentration, and 120 min reaction time, and the diameter was within 10 nm. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) showed that the CNC still kept the cellulose type I structure. The crystallinity of CNCs increased to the maximum by 18.34% compared with that of delignified Pennisetum hydridum fibers. Thermogravimetry (TG) illustrated the thermal stability of CNCs was lower than that of delignified Pennisetum hydridum fibers due to the introduction of sulfate groups in the cellulose. This study demonstrated that Pennisetum hydridum fertilized by MSS might be a suitable raw material for CNCs. This implies meaningful resource utilization of MSS and Pennisetum hydridum .

Isolation and Characterization of Cellulose Nanocrystals from Waste Cotton Fibers Using Sulfuric Acid Hydrolysis

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are one of the most useful materials that have recently been used in various fields. There are many natural resources on earth from which CNC can be extracted in a variety of methods. This study focuses on the extraction of CNCs from waste cotton fibers (WCFs) by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Physicochemical characterization of the synthesized CNCs was examined by different techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX). Results revealed the good performance and properties for synthesized CNCs. The spectra from FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated the successful synthesis of CNCs by acid hydrolysis without the formation of byproducts or further degradation. The XRD analysis showed that the crystallinity index increased from 79.87 to 88.37% during the conversion of WCFs to CNCs. Microscopic techniques results (SEM and AFM) confirmed the rod‐like morphology structure for CNCs. The SEM results obviously showed a significant size decrease during acid hydrolysis. The AFM results for CNCs showed the length and diameter of 170 ± 60 nm and 25 ± 10 nm, respectively. Moreover, DLS measurements showed high stability of CNCs with a zeta potential of −74.43 ± 3.5 mV and dispersion of 0.147 ± 0.01 in aqueous solution. Due to the presence of 0.74 weight% of sulfur in the CNC backbone, CNCs showed lower thermal stability at 170–348 °C compared to WCFs. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved
Extraction of the cellulose nanocrystals via ammonium persulfate oxidation of beaten cellulose fibers

Abstract:The effect of beating starting pulp was investigated on the oxidation efficiency of ammonium persulfate (APS), the yield, and the properties of the CNCs. The beaten pulp and the subsequent CNCs were characterized, respectively, by different techniques. The CNCs were classified as CNC1 and CNC2, dependent on ultrasonication. It showed that the beating exposed more free OH groups in the pulp and enhanced the yield and surface charges of CNCs. Compared to the CNC2, the CNC1 had a higher surface charge, higher crystallinity, higher thermal stability, shorter length, smaller length distribution, and slightly larger width. The CNC1 and CNC2 had similar rheological properties. For the beaten pulp with a beating degree of 25°SR, the yields of the CNC1 and the total CNCs reached the maximum, 42.65 and 34.11 %, respectively. The surface charges of the CNC1 and the CNC2 also reached the maximum, −44.5 and − 33.6 mV, respectively. Their crystallinity indexes were 80.07 and 75.42 %, respectively. The lengths of the CNC1 and the CNC2 were 157.31 ± 30.61 and 214.92 ± 65.52 nm, and their widths were 10.13 ± 2.74 and 9.43 ± 2.99 nm, respectively. Therefore, proper beating enhanced the APS oxidation efficiency and influenced the CNCs properties.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been widely used as renewable materials and tough nano-composites due to its excellent properties. Currently, the preparation methods of CNCs require substantial energy and time consumption and the use of toxic chemicals. Herein, cotton and other biomass feedstocks were treated with deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and subsequent high-pressure homogenization (HPH), which was a simple preparation procedure for CNCs. The morphological, spectroscopic, and stability properties of the as-prepared rod-shaped CNCs were characterized using zeta potential, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric techniques. CNCs with a diameter range of 50–100 nm and a length range of 500–800 nm were successfully assembled. The resulting CNC suspension was stable even after one month of storage. The solvent could be recycled successfully and reused for at least three additional pretreatment cycles while maintaining its pretreatment capability. The use of a DES as both the catalyst and solvent introduces a green chemical process that does not produce any hazardous waste and is an economical process because of the high recyclability (> 85%). The molecular structure changes of cellulose after HPH and DES treatment were also discussed. This is the first report on the recycling and reuse of a DES after preparing CNCs.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are clean and sustainable materials that have drawn significant attention in academia and industry because of their unique physicochemical properties. However, realizing economical and environmentally friendly production of CNCs remains a challenge. In this study, we proposed an innovative strategy to fabricate CNCs, which involves the acid hydrolysis pretreatment of wood cellulose fibers using innocuous and recyclable ferric chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3·6H2O). During the molten FeCl3·6H2O treatment, the degree of polymerization (DP) of the cellulose fibers sharply decreased, along with the transformation of cellulose I to cellulose II crystallites. Molten FeCl3·6H2O quickly hydrolyzed cellulose fibers within 5 min at 80 °C, inducing a rapid decrease in the DP from 922 to 196, and the water-insoluble solid (WIS) retention reached 80.1%. CNCs were successfully produced from the mechanical disintegration of the WIS with a low energy input. Hence, the yield of CNCs is consistent with that of the WIS. Interestingly, the CNCs exhibited typical cellulose II crystallites, which were significantly different from those of the cellulose feedstock (cellulose I). Detailed characterization revealed that the CNCs had tunable number-averaged heights of 10.4–26.9 nm and high thermal stability (a maximal weight loss temperature of 327 °C). Most notably, FeCl3·6H2O was easily recycled from the hydrolysate after hydrolysis, with a high recovery of 94.0–94.5 wt %, using simple concentration and crystallization technologies. Thus, this study proposes a novel production technology for CNCs that is both economical and eco-friendly, providing new ideas for clean and large-scale production of CNCs.

Abstract:As a kind of agro-industrial wastes, paper mill sludge (PMS) has posed serious environmental and economic challenges for disposal due to the more stringent regulations and diminishing land availability in recent years. The present study is aimed at providing a sustainable approach to efficiently convert PMS to cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) and cellulose nanopaper (CNP) by formic acid (FA) hydrolysis pretreatment and the followed microfluidization. It is found that FA hydrolysis (4–6 h) could swell and shorten PMS fibers, and only two-pass microfluidization is sufficient to get uniform CNFs from the collected cellulose residual. Results indicate that the obtained CNFs show high thermal stability and crystallinity index, surface functionality (ester groups), as well as a high yield of over 75 wt.%. Notably, more than 90 % FA can be recovered and the hydrolyzed sugars could be potentially used to produce platform chemicals (e.g. lactic acid, furfural). Finally, transparent CNP is prepared from the CNFs suspension via a simple vacuum filtration technique. The resultant CNP shows good mechanical properties with the maximum tensile strength and toughness of 106.4 MPa and 6.62 MJ/m3, respectively. Therefore, the current work provides a green and sustainable method to valorize PMS for the production of valuable CNFs and CNP.

Abstract:The culture substrate of Auricularia auricula contains lots of wood residues, which is not easy to compost or be used to produce feed. In this study, the spent culture substrate of Auricularia auricula (SSA) was used as raw material to prepare cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The CNCs were prepared by hydrolysis of the cellulose extracted from SSA (SSAC) with H 2 SO 4 aqueous solution. The effect of concentration of H 2 SO 4 , acid hydrolysis temperature and hydrolysis time on the properties of CNCs and the reaction mechanism were studied. When the cellulose extracted from SSA (SSAC) was treated with 45 wt% H 2 SO 4 at 45 °C for 120 min, the obtained CNCs was slender needle-like and the yield was 67.25 wt% (based on the mass of cellulose from pretreated SSA). The obtained CNCs in this condition have a crystallinity of 73.15% and the diameter distribute between 4 and 16 nm. The results show that the residual wood in SSA could prepare CNCs with higher crystallinity and smaller particle size under a more moderate condition. This study provides a new approach for the reuse of spent culture substrate of Auricularia auricula as well as a new cheap raw material for preparation of CNCs.

Abstract:This study presents an easy, low-cost, high-yield fabrication method for spherical cellulose nanocrystals (SCNCs) from raw celluloses of eucalyptus pulp (EP) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) via a synergetic strategy of swelling-enzymolysis-mechanical treatment. The effects of swelling, enzymolysis, and homogenization on the morphology and properties of the SCNCs obtained from the two raw celluloses were systematically investigated. In comparison with the method that only resulted in low-yield (at most 8%) SCNCs from the supernatants prepared by swelling and enzymolysis of raw celluloses in sequence or simultaneously, high-yield, well-dispersed SCNCs with a high purity of more than 98% was obtained by high-pressure homogenization of centrifugal precipitates of the swollen and enzymatically hydrolyzed raw celluloses. The total yields of SCNCs with diameters of 20–50 nm were ca. 72% and 74% from EP and MCC, respectively. The deconvolution fitting of FT-IR showed that the intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonds related to O(6) within the anhydroglucose unit of cellulose were largely destroyed in the process of enzymatic hydrolysis, which was closely associated with the degradation of partial crystalline regions by endonuclease under high enzyme activity, thus promoting the depolymerization of cellulose and the formation of SCNCs. The crystal structure of the resulting SCNCs did not change. In particular, compared with SCNCs from EP, the SCNCs obtained from MCC possessed high crystallinity (88.5%), thermal stability (decomposition temperature, 341.7 °C), and hydrophobicity. The unique morphology and excellent properties of SCNCs may broaden the application of cellulose-based nanomaterials in high value-added fields.

Abstract:Applications of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in various fields of high value have been and are being widely studied. However, research about the fundamental preparation method has come to a standstill. This work aims to introduce a concept of progressive dissolution of cellulosic fibers and an eco-friendly way of preparing CNCs. By controlling TBAH concentration, the amphiphilicity and dissolving capability of TBAH/H2O can be regulated. Through a controlled partial dissolution of cellulose in the solvent, aqueous tetra-butylammonium hydroxide (TBAH), the fiber can be dissolved to make nanoscale particles (CNC suspensions). Polarized light microscopy provides a quantitative evaluation of the progress of dissolution, by which a processing window (43% TBAH/H2O, 30 min dissolution at room temperature) for preparing CNCs from cotton pulp has been determined. The multiscale cellulose products, including micron-scale, nanoscale, and well-dissolved products of cellulose, have been separated with the assistance of the derivatization process. There are interestingly homogeneous materials of cellulose I with a needle-like shape in the nanoscale products extracted. Furthermore, the cellulose raw materials can be extended from cotton pulp to wood pulp, bamboo pulp, straw pulp, and microcrystalline cellulose, indicating it to be a universal method. Analysis of XRD patterns of the raw and CNCs indicates that amorphous and less-crystalline cellulose can be precisely and controllably dissolved by the solvent, leaving CNCs.

Abstract:The present study aimed to optimize the process for extracting cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from sugarcane bagasse through ultrasonic-assisted sulfuric acid hydrolysis and its subsequent modification with L-malic acid and silane coupling agent KH-550. The effects of the different modification methods and the order of modification on the structures and properties of bagasse CNCs were explored. The results indicated that the optimal process conditions were achieved at an acid-digestion temperature of 50 °C, a reaction time of 70 min, an ultrasonic power of 250 W, and a volume fraction of 55%. The modified CNCs were analyzed using infrared spectral, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric techniques, which revealed that L-malic acid was attached to the hydroxyl group on the CNCs via ester bond formations, and the silane coupling agent KH-550 was adsorbed effectively on the CNCs' surfaces. Moreover, it was observed that the modification of the CNCs by L-malic acid and the KH-550 silane coupling agent occurred only on the surface, and the esterification-crosslinking modification method provided the best thermal stability. The performance of self-made CNC was found to be superior to that of purchased CNC based on the transmission electron microscopy analysis. Furthermore, the modified esterified-crosslinked CNCs exhibited the best structure and performance, thereby offering a potential avenue for the high-value utilization of sugarcane bagasse, a byproduct of sugarcane sugar production, and the expansion of the comprehensive utilization of sugarcane bagasse.
Extraction of cellulose nanocrystalline from Camellia oleifera Abel waste shell: Study of critical processes, properties and enhanced emulsion performance

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) extracted from the waste shell of Camellia oleifera Abel (C. oleifera) are gaining attention as valuable materials. In this study, CNCs were extracted from the agricultural waste shell of C. oleifera through phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid hydrolysis, respectively. Firstly, we optimized the alkaline treatment process for cellulose isolation by using response surface methodology. Furthermore, the properties of CNCs were investigated by neutralizing them with NaOH and NH3·H2O, and by dialysis in water. In addition, the characterization methods including FT-IR, TGA, AFM and TEM were used to analysis the properties of the synthesized CNCs. Finally, CNCs were studied for their application in essential oil-based Pickering emulsions. CNCs obtained from sulfuric acid showed the smallest particle size and good dispersibility. Moreover, the release profiles of essential oils in the emulsions were followed by Peppa's kinetic release model. The antibacterial activity of the emulsions against E. coli and S. aureus showed that CNCs-stabilized emulsions enhanced the antibacterial activity of essential oils. Therefore, neutralization treatments may enhance the properties of CNCs, and CNCs stabilized Pickering emulsions can enhance antibacterial activity of essential oil. This study provides insight into the potential application of CNCs derived from C. oleifera waste shells.
Characteristics and kinetics study of spherical cellulose nanocrystal extracted from cotton cloth waste by acid hydrolysis

Abstract:This work investigated the extraction of spherical cellulose nanocrystal (spherical CNC) from cotton cloth waste (CCW) using sulfuric acid without ultrasound treatment during the hydrolysis process, producing a yield of 31%. The cellulose was first extracted through alkali, decoloring, and hydrochloric acid treatment. Then the cellulose was hydrolyzed using 55 wt% sulfuric acid with various acid to cellulose ratios, including 30:1, 40:1, and 50:1 mL g − 1 . The resulting CNC was characterized by morphological structure, functional groups, crystalline structure, elemental compositions, thermal degradation kinetic, and zeta potential. The analytical results revealed that the acid to cellulose ratios significantly influenced the properties of CNC obtained. The morphological structure showed that when the acid to cellulose ratio was 30:1 and 40:1 mL g − 1 , the rod-like CNC was observed with a length of 53 ± 19 nm and 49 ± 13 nm; a width of 6.6 ± 1.3 nm and 4.3 ± 2.0 nm, respectively. However, when the acid to cellulose ratio was further increased to 50:1 mL g − 1 , the nanocellulose morphology turned to be spherical, with an average diameter of 14.4 nm. Furthermore, spherical CNC exhibited better characteristics consisting of crystallinity index (94.6%) and stable dispersibility with zeta potential value − 46.8 mV than rod-like CNC. However, the thermal stability of spherical CNC was slightly lower than that of rod-like CNC. The kinetic results indicated that the activation energy of spherical CNC ranged from 134 to 423 kJ mol − 1 , which is lower than that (145 to 651 kJ mol − 1 ) of rod-like CNC ranging from. This study showed that the CCW is a potential low-cost cellulose source to manufacture spherical CNC and a good example for developing a circular economy.
