Abstract:Epicyclic gearboxes are prevalent in a variety of important engineering systems such as automotive, aerospace, wind turbines, civil equipment and industrial robots owing to the merits of compact structure and high power density. To ensure the productivities of such important systems, condition monitoring techniques are being actively studied to resolve the challenge of varying transmission paths and multiple modulations in vibration signals acquired from ring gear housing. This paper proposes a new Modulation Signal Bispectrum (MSB) Enhanced Squared Envelope method to analyse the vibration signals acquired by a special On-Rotor Sensing (ORS) transducer that is mounted on the shaft of an epicyclic gearbox. A vibration signal model of ORS measurements from epicyclic gearboxes is presented to show the multiple modulation influences. Moreover, inevitable noise influences are also investigated on the conventional squared envelope and the stateof-the-art spectral correlation analysis. On this base, MSB is introduced to suppress these influences for accurately extracting equally spaced harmonics in the squared envelope and is then integrated to isolate fault signatures, allowing effective fault detection and diagnosis of epicyclic gearboxes, which lead to novel contributions of an MSB Enhanced Squared Envelope (MSB-ESE) approach. An experimental study of compound epicyclic gear faults was conducted to demonstrate the superior performance of MSB-ESE along with the special ORS technique in detecting and diagnosing the compound faults on sun and planet gears.
Early Fault Diagnosis for Planetary Gearbox Based Wavelet Packet Energy and Modulation Signal Bispectrum Analysis

Abstract:The planetary gearbox is at the heart of most rotating machinery. The premature failure and subsequent downtime of a planetary gearbox not only seriously affects the reliability and safety of the entire rotating machinery but also results in severe accidents and economic losses in industrial applications. It is an important and challenging task to accurately detect failures in a planetary gearbox at an early stage to ensure the safety and reliability of the mechanical transmission system. In this paper, a novel method based on wavelet packet energy (WPE) and modulation signal bispectrum (MSB) analysis is proposed for planetary gearbox early fault diagnostics. First, the vibration signal is decomposed into different time-frequency subspaces using wavelet packet decomposition (WPD). The WPE is calculated in each time-frequency subspace. Secondly, the relatively high energy vectors are selected from a WPE matrix to obtain a reconstructed signal. The reconstructed signal is then subjected to MSB analysis to obtain the fault characteristic frequency for fault diagnosis of the planetary gearbox. The validity of the proposed method is carried out through analyzing the vibration signals of the test planetary gearbox in two fault cases. One fault is a chipped sun gear tooth and the other is an inner-race fault in the planet gear bearing. The results show that the proposed method is feasible and effective for early fault diagnosis in planetary gearboxes.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel signal processing scheme by combining an improved Vold-Kalman filter and the multi-scale sample entropy (IVKF-MSSE) for planetary gearboxes under non-stationary working conditions. In this scheme, we propose a method based on the characteristic frequency ratio (CFR) to select the VKF bandwidth. First, a CFR is adopted to select a VKF bandwidth with the largest CFR value as the optimal VKF bandwidth. Second, IVKF is used to extract fault-induced information under time-varying speed conditions. Because an optimal bandwidth is used in VKF, the feature extraction capability of VKF is enhanced. Then, the MSSE is applied to extract gearbox fault features. After that, the Laplacian score (LS) approach is introduced to refine the fault features by sorting the scale factors. At the end, the selected features are fed into the least square support vector machine (LSSVM) for effective fault pattern identification. Simulation and experimental vibration signals are employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results show that the proposed method outperforms the auto-regressive AR-MSSE, VKF-MSSE and EEMD-MSSE in identifying fault types of planetary gearboxes.

Abstract:Due to their high transmission ratio, high load carrying capacity and small size, planetary gears are widely used in the transmission systems of wind turbines. The planetary gearbox is the core of the transmission system of a wind turbine, but because of its special structure and complex internal and external excitation, the vibration signal spectrum shows strong nonlinearity, asymmetry and time variation, which brings great trouble to planetary gear fault diagnosis. The traditional time-frequency analysis technology is insufficient in the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of wind turbines. For this reason, we propose a new method of planetary gearbox fault diagnosis based on Compressive sensing, Two-dimensional variational mode decomposition (2D-VMD) and full-vector spectrum technology. Firstly, the nonlinear reconstruction and noise reduction of the signal is carried out by using compressed sensing, and then the signal with multiple degrees of freedom is adaptively decomposed into multiple sets of characteristic scale components by using 2D-VMD. Then, Rényi entropy is used as the optimization index of 2D-VMD analysis performance to extract the effective target intrinsic mode function (IMF) component, reconstruct the dynamics signal in the planetary gearbox, and improve the signal-to-noise ratio. Then, using the full-vector spectrum technique, the homologous information collected by numerous sensors is data layer fused in the spatial domain and the time domain to increase the comprehensiveness and certainty of the fault information. Finally, the Teager–Kaiser energy operator is used to demodulate the potential low-frequency dynamics frequency characteristics from the high-frequency domain and detect the fault characteristic frequency. Furthermore, the correctness and validity of the method are verified by the fault test signal of the planetary gearbox.

Abstract:To solve the problem of noise interference and difficulty in feature extraction of vibration signals of planetary gearbox, propose a fault diagnosis method of planetary gearbox based on improved sparrow search algorithm optimized variational mode extraction (ISSA-VME) and multi-scale fuzzy entropy (MFE). The vibration signal was decomposed by ISSA-VME, and the multi-scale fuzzy entropy of the original signal was calculated according to the IMF component. The fault feature set composed of MFE was applied to the SVM classifier optimized by the improved sparrow search algorithm for fault pattern recognition. The experimental results demonstrate that compared with ICEEMDAN and VMD methods, ISSA-VME has a better effect and higher efficiency on vibration signal decomposition. The identification rate of missing teeth, cracks, wear, and other faults of planetary gearbox sun gear by the proposed method reaches 97.50%.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the planetary gearbox fault signal under varying working conditions has the characteristics of multi-component modulation, non-stationary and weak features, which makes it difficult to extract the fault features, a novel planetary gearbox fault diagnosis method based on based on improved adaptive chirp mode decomposition (IACMD) and Maximum second-order cyclostationary blind deconvolution (CYCBD) is proposed. Firstly, the IACMD is used to decompose the non-stationary vibration signal, and the mode with the largest Gini index is selected as the sensitive component. Then, the selected sensitive modal component is resampled at equal angles to obtain angular domain signal. Finally, the CYCBD is used to enhance the weak fault features of the angular domain component, and the fault feature orders can be extracted from the envelope spectrum of deconvolution signal. The experimental results show that the proposed method can successfully extract the weak fault impact characteristics of planetary gearbox under varying working conditions, which verifies the effectiveness and feasibility of this method.

Abstract:Planetary gearboxes play an important role in wind turbine drive trains. Fault diagnosis of planetary gearboxes is a key topic for maintenance of wind turbines. Considering the spectral complexity of planetary gearbox vibration signals as well as their amplitude modulation and frequency modulation (AMFM) nature, we propose a simple yet effective method to diagnose planetary gearbox faults based on amplitude and frequency demodulations. We use the energy separation algorithm to estimate the amplitude envelope and instantaneous frequency of modulated signals for further demodulation analysis, by exploiting the adaptability of Teager energy operator to instantaneous changes in signals and the fine time resolution. However, the energy separation algorithm requires signals to be mono-components. To satisfy this requirement, we decompose signals into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method as it can decompose any signal into mono-components. We further propose a criterion to guide the selection of the most relevant IMF for demodulation analysis according to the wavelet-like filter nature of EEMD and the AMFM characteristics of the planetary gearbox vibration signals. By matching the dominant peaks in the Fourier spectra of the obtained amplitude envelope and instantaneous frequency with the theoretical characteristic frequency of each gear, we can diagnose planetary gearbox faults. The principle and effectiveness of the proposed method are illustrated by simulation and the experimental analysis of signals from a planetary gearbox of a wind turbine test rig. With the proposed method, both the wear and chipping faults can be detected and located for a sun gear of the planetary gearbox test rig.

Abstract:The planetary gearbox, widely used in many machinery fields, suffers from harmful vibration excited by bearings fault, which always causes machine breakdowns. Thus, fault diagnosis is the necessary approach to keeping machines safe, which often takes fault features, which are extracted from signals, as critical information. However, limited to various interferences caused by gear meshing and background noise, fault characteristic information is always weak and difficult to identify, bringing an increasing emphasis on feature enhancement. In this article, based on the feature enhancement problem under strong interferences, a sparse regular diagnosis algorithm is studied. First, a new fault sensitivity indicator is constructed to distinguish different periodic impulse signals and enhance the energy of the fault impulse. Combined with tunable -factor wavelet transform (TQWT) multiscale representation, the guided enhanced vector is introduced to guide the directional gathering of the fault frequency band. Then, a weighted regular term is constructed to establish the guided enhanced regular sparse (GERS) model. Iterative soft threshold algorithm is employed to solve the model. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, through numerical simulation and fault experiment, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm are verified successfully.

Abstract:The vibration signal of planetary gearboxes under variable speed conditions shows non-stationary characteristics, indicating that fault diagnosis has become more complex and challenging. In order to more accurately diagnose faults in planetary gearboxes under variable speed conditions, a new method is proposed based on the angular domain Gramian angular difference field (ADGADF) and Swin Transformer. This method initially employs the chirplet path pursuit (CPP) algorithm to fit the speed curve of the original time-domain signal and then combines the speed curve with computed order tracking (COT) to achieve equal angle resampling of the time-domain signal, obtaining a stationary signal in the angular domain. On the basis of the above, the angular domain signal is creatively encoded into the two-dimensional images using the Gramian angular field (GAF), which accurately represents the fault characteristics of the original signal. Finally, the Swin Transformer network, with efficient global feature extraction capability, is used to learn advanced features from the images, achieving accurate fault recognition and classification. The proposed method is verified by experiment on the planetary gearbox and its performance is compared with several common coding methods and intelligent diagnosis algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed method reaches an accuracy of up to 99.8%. In addition, its performance in accuracy, precision, recall, F 1-score and the confusion matrix is superior to traditional diagnostic methods. It also offers the advantage of strong robustness.

Abstract:Vibration signals related to planetary gearbox faults under non-stationary conditions can be modeled as a special category of frequency modulation (FM) signals that are equipped with sinusoidal FM patterns. Extracting fault features implied in the FM pattern is the key issue to detect inner gear faults in planetary gearboxes. To address such a challenging issue, this paper conducts a detailed study on the sinusoidal FM patterns of fault-related vibration signals and proposes a novel method to extract them successfully. In specific, the proposed method firstly separates amplitude modulation (AM) and FM modes by Hilbert transform to avoid their mutual interference. The complete FM features implied in AM and FM modes can thus be extracted by a signal decomposition method named ACMD, respectively. Compared with the classical strategies, the proposed method not only avoids the complex sideband analysis but also identifies the oscillating section included in the FM mode, which facilitates the understanding for the intrinsic FM pattern of fault-related signal models. The performance of our method is finally verified by two simulated examples and a real case related to the sun gear missing fault occurred in a planetary gearbox.

Extracting fault features implied in the AM and FM modes is the key issue to detect inner gear faults occurring in planetary gearboxes. However, there exist few signal analysis approaches that are able to track the fast oscillating nature implied in the fault-induced sinusoidal FM patterns. To address such a challenging issue, this paper conducts a detailed study on sinusoidal FM patterns of the fault-related vibration signal model and proposes a novel method to extract them successfully. To be specific, the proposed method firstly separates the AM and FM modes via Hilbert transform to avoid their mutual interference. The intrinsic modulation features implied in the AM and FM modes can then be separately extracted by a developed signal decomposition method named iterative-joint chirp mode decomposition (I-JCMD) with a composite mode optimization scheme. Compared with the existing fault detection techniques, the proposed method is not only able to avoid the complicated sideband analysis but also identify the fast and time-varying oscillating nature of the FM mode with a high accuracy. The performance of our method is finally verified by three simulated cases and four groups of real vibration signals related to four types of sun gear faults occurring in a planetary gearbox test-rig, which also reveals a potential scaling relation between load strength and the oscillating coefficient of the FM mode. Abstract:<p>This article describes an acoustic-based fault detection technique of three-stage planetary gearbox in actual engineering applications. The proposed technique was used to extract weak fault signal features. The measured acoustic signals were converted into the path graph from a new perspective in the graph spectral domain. Then an optimized spectral graph wavelet transform method is proposed to decompose the path graph into multiple components. Furthermore, reference signal was constructed based on the structure of planetary gearbox, and the fault-related component is output by comparing the similarity between the constructed reference signal and the decomposed components. Finally, the envelope spectrum analysis is further adopted to identify faults. The proposed supervised adaptive spectral graph wavelet transform (SASGWT) method has better performance than traditional wavelet decomposition method. The weak fault detection effect based on acoustic signals is superior to vibration signals under the experimental conditions of this work.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Planetary gearbox operates under complex working conditions involving high speed, heavy load, and corrosion. When the planetary gearbox is in tight spaces, it is difficult to measure its signal by conventional methods. In this case, acoustic sensors can measure signal with the noncontact method. This paper proposes a vibro-acoustic fault diagnosis method with respect to planetary gearbox. The method addresses challenges related to weak vibro-acoustic signal, difficulty in extracting fault features, and low diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. Firstly, vibro-acoustic signal is captured by a unidirectional microphone. Next, intrinsic wavelet analysis extracts intrinsic features of the planetary gears. The band-limited intrinsic mode functions (BLIMFs) of the acoustic signal are obtained by optimized variational mode decomposition, and the BLIMFs are then transformed into time-frequency map features. Finally, these time-frequency map features are utilized as the inputs for Ghost module and Efficient channel attention module (GE)-improved EfficientNet model, namely GE-EfficientNet model, to achieve fault diagnosis of planetary gearbox. The superiority of the proposed method is verified by the experimental results which show that the diagnostic accuracy of GE-EfficientNet reached 100%, and the floating-point operations and parameter numbers are only 5.1 G and 0.4 MB, respectively. The results demonstrate that the proposed vibro-acoustic fault diagnosis method achieves good diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:Planetary gear transmission system is an important transmission part of large machinery and is prone to failure. Aiming at the problem of how to extract fault information from vibration signals of nonlinear and nonstationary planetary gearboxes, a performance degradation evaluation index of planetary gearboxes based on improved distributed compressed sensing and modified multiscale symbolic dynamic entropy (DCSMDE) is proposed. DCSMDE combines distributed compression sensing with modified multiscale symbol dynamic entropy and solves the problem of strong nonlinearity and strong vibration signal coupling of the planetary transmission system from the homologous signals of multiple sensors. A distributed compression sensing parameter optimization algorithm based on Rényi entropy is proposed, which uses improved distributed compression sensing technology to simultaneously sample, compress, and denoise the multisource vibration data of rotating machinery. DCSMDE is used to calculate the reconstructed signal, extract the features with higher recognition characteristics, and use the change trend of the DCSMDE value to judge the working status of the planetary gearbox. Experimental results show that DCSMDE can be applied to dynamic evolution and fault identification of mechanical systems and accurately classify actual fault signals. It provides a new idea for the classification of planetary gear faults and the recognition of performance degradation.

Abstract:Bispectrum analysis is considered as a typical motor current signature analysis tool, has been widely concerned in fault feature extraction. However, current bispectrum utilizes the entire spectrum to demodulate fault feature components. Moreover, it applies vertical slicing to obtain fault information, which tends to cause ambiguity in the frequency components. This paper proposed a novel multivariate frequency transfer bispectrum estimator (MFTBE) for gearbox drive system fault diagnosis. Firstly, the current signals are processed using phase space reconstruction to construct the Hankel matrix and calculate its bispectrum signals. Subsequently, the resonance frequencies are selected as the frequency transfer value from bispectrum signals to construct the frequency transfer bispectrum, which is synchronously averaged to form the multivariate frequency transfer bispectrum (MFTB). Finally, the integral operation is utilized on the MFTB to obtain the MFTBE to extract gearbox drive system fault features. Numerical simulations and experiment data are utilized to verify the practicability and effectiveness of MFTBE. Analysis results prove that MFTBE is effective in extracting fault features and its performance is better than other well-advanced algorithms.

Abstract:In a high-noise environment and with a limited number of faulty samples, it becomes challenging to extract a sufficient amount of useful fault information, which makes gear fault diagnosis more difficult. To address these issues, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method for planetary gearboxes based on intrinsic feature extraction and attention mechanism. The method utilizes the CEEMD algorithm to perform modal decomposition on the fault vibration signal, obtaining a series of modal components. By comparing and selecting the modal components that contain a significant amount of fault features, they are then transformed into two-dimensional images with time-frequency properties using wavelet transform. Additionally, a neural network model based on attention mechanism and large-scale convolution is proposed. The preprocessed images are inputted into the network for feature extraction. During this process, the large-scale convolution with residual structure maximizes the retention of effective feature information, while the attention network further filters the features. Finally, the selected features are used for fault classification. The model is validated using the gear datasets from Southeast University and the University of Connecticut. A comparison is made with the Pro-MobileNetV3, CA-MCNN, MSDARN, and CBAM-ResNeXt50 models. It is found that the accuracy reaches 100% before adding Gaussian noise and 99.68% after adding noise, which is significantly higher than that of other models.

A fast filtering method based on adaptive impulsive wavelet for the gear fault diagnosis

Abstract:The useful fault features applied for the fault diagnosis are usually overwhelmed by noise and other interference factors in rotation machinery. The impulses masked in vibration signals can represent the faults of gears or bearings in a gearbox. The key to finding impulsive components is to identify the modeling parameters (such as damping ratio, central frequency) of a transient (Morlet wavelet, Laplace wavelet), which can be used as an adaptive filter to denoise the vibration signal. However, its engineering application is limited by the time-consuming computation. In order to tackle this issue, a fast algorithm based on an adaptive impulsive wavelet is proposed to filter the fault signal so that the fault characteristic frequency can be identified. Firstly, a correlation coefficient maximum criterion is employed to find one of the optimal parameters of the impulsive wavelet. Then, the other parameter is optimized by the minimum Shannon wavelet entropy criterion. Finally, the impulsive wavelet filter with optimal parameters is applied to extract the fault characteristic frequency. Simulation signals are applied to verify the efficiency of the proposed approach, and comparison analysis is conducted as well. Further, the proposed method is applied to detect the gear fault of a gearbox. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective with high efficiency.

Abstract:Planetary gearboxes are widely used in modern industrial fields due to the characteristics of large transmission ratio and high transmission efficiency, etc. A new diagnosis method is proposed in this work to identify the unknown fault of planetary gearbox under the strong noise background. Firstly, an optimal rank estimation strategy based on signal spectrum clustering results, a prerequisite for using the nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) method, is proposed to guide the NMF process of original signal spectrum matrix. Secondly, consider the interpretability of decomposition results, the basis matrix generated by NMF is interpreted as the spectrum feature selection library of the original signal. Meanwhile, the basis vector with the largest kurtosis value in the basis matrix is selected to participate in the filtering of the original signal, and the envelope of filtered signal is obtained. Then, the excellent ability of stochastic resonance to amplify weak signals is utilized. A quantitative index independent of the prior fault knowledge is constructed to evaluate the stochastic resonance response of envelope signal. Finally, the fault mode of planetary gearbox is determined by the structural characteristics of resonance response spectrum. Simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. It has good performance in pattern recognition of the unknown faults of planetary gearbox.

Abstract:Existing gearbox fault diagnosis methods are prone to noise interference and cannot extract comprehensive fault signals, leading to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. This paper proposes a method for gearbox fault diagnosis based on adaptive variational mode decomposition–stationary wavelet transform (AVMD-SWT) and ensemble refined composite multiscale fluctuation dispersion entropy (ERCMFDE). Initially, the kurtosis coefficient and autocorrelation coefficient are presented, and the Intrinsic Mode Functions are denoised through the application of AVMD-SWT. Secondly, the coarse-grained processing method of composite multiscale fluctuation dispersion entropy is extended to encompass three additional approaches: first-order central moment, second-order central moment, and third-order central moment. This enables the comprehensive extraction of feature information from the time series, thereby facilitating the formation of an initial hybrid feature set. Subsequently, recursive feature elimination (RFE) is employed for feature selection. Ultimately, the outcomes of the faults diagnoses are derived through the utilization of a Support Vector Machine with a Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA-SVM), with the actual faults data collection and analysis conducted on an experimental platform for gearbox fault diagnosis. The experiments demonstrate that the method can accurately identify gearbox faults and achieve a high diagnostic accuracy of 98.78%.

Abstract:Vibration signals of the planetary transmission system usually contain excitation responses from different structures. The fault characteristic of the planet bearing cage is weak, which is often overwhelmed by strong noise and other irrelevant vibration components. Therefore, fault feature extraction of the planet bearing cage is a challenging topic. In this paper, a novel fault feature extraction method is proposed to extract weak fault features of the planet bearing cage. The general parameterized time-frequency transform is employed to accurately extract instantaneous rotational speed information from the planet bearing vibration signal for resampling. It can obtain the accurate rotational speed result even though under power frequency interference conditions. The influence of the deterministic components excited by the gear can be reduced by using the spectral pre-whitening and the interference of noise and random impact can be reduced in the selection of the optimal resonance frequency band by using autogram analysis. The fault characteristic components of the planet bearing cage can be extracted from the square envelop spectrum. The neighborhood power density ratio index is further constructed to distinguish the health bearing state from the cage fault bearing state and evaluate the degree of faults. Experiments designed in a planetary transmission system test rig of an armored vehicle have verified the potential and effectiveness of the proposed fault feature extraction method in exhibiting planet bearing cage fault features.
