Abstract:The potential of digital games to enhance learning in different areas of child development has drawn increasing interest amid growing concern about children’s emotional well-being, social-emotional difficulties, and problem behaviors alongside diminishing economic resources for intervention and habilitation. However, digital games designed to promote social-emotional competence are surprisingly scarce. In this chapter, we explore children’s use of the digital game Emotion Detectives (ED), designed to promote children’s acquisition of emotional knowledge skills (e.g., recognizing, appreciating, and understanding emotions and their expressions), prosocial behaviors (e.g., helping, sharing, comforting, and showing concern for others), and problem-solving abilities. Analyzing children’s gameplay sessions in two Finnish day care centers improved understanding of children’s gameplay experiences, social-emotional knowledge, and collaborative learning. From the double effect of practicing social-emotional skills simultaneously in the game and in peer interactions, ED has the potential to be an effective learning environment for children. The game’s humorous features, creative opportunities, and possibilities to make progress while playing clearly motivated children to learn.

Abstract:Social and emotional competencies (self-regulation, coping with challenges, positive relationships) are related to positive life outcomes. Justice involved children and young people have not always had the opportunities to develop these competencies due to a range of disadvantages. This research explores the extent to which identified competencies can be developed through specially designed active games. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected to assess the bespoke games' effectiveness and tested in seven European countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, UK). A total of 326 young people participated across 17 settings with 105 educators trained in the methodology. The findings suggest that participation in the active games had demonstrable impact, both overall, and for the specific identified competencies. Participation in such programmes can support the holistic development of social and emotional competencies which can facilitate readiness and openness to learning for other interventions. This key finding contributes to dis/engagement theory, recommending that such programmes should form the basis of a suite of interventions designed to support the educational (re)engagement and development of justice involved children and young people. These findings have currency for developing policy which promote positive outcomes on release back into the community, across a range of national contexts.
Children's Perspectives on Using Serious Games as a Complement to Promoting Their Social-Emotional Skills

Abstract:The use of serious games may be an appealing and complementary way to motivate curriculum-based social and emotional learning (SEL); still, investigation into this potential usefulness is scarce. This study aims to address the usefulness of serious games within the program 'Me and Us of Emotions'. Specifically, we analyzed the differences in children's satisfaction in sessions that did or did not use serious games as a complement to the intervention, explored the contribution of using serious games to the global satisfaction with the program, and explored children's qualitative feedback regarding the sessions. The participants were 232 children (122 boys and 110 girls) aged between 8 and 12 years old (M = 9.09, SD = 0.80). The measures were based on the subjective appraisals of the sessions made by the participating children, including quantitative and qualitative assessments of the degree of satisfaction of the participants. The results showed that there were similar levels of satisfaction with the sessions that did or did not use serious games as a complement to the program. However, only satisfaction with the sessions that used serious games (and not satisfaction with the sessions that did not use them) contributed significantly to explaining both the enjoyment of the activities and the interest in the subjects. Satisfaction with serious games was significantly and positively associated with fun, easiness, ability to understand the session, and ability to cope with emotions. Qualitative analysis showed three main themes, namely: positive aspects, negative aspects, and opportunities for improvement of the program. Overall, these results indicate that children's satisfaction with the 'Me and Us of Emotions' program is related to serious games, suggesting the relevance of using this complementary tool more often when intervening with younger generations.

Abstract:This study refers to the socio-emotional, psychological and motor skills development in children. School must give more attention to the harmonious physical and mental development of children, especially at elementary school age when study and movement represent their main activities. Hypothesis: In this study we aim at demonstrating that increasing the dynamic games instructive-educational potential we can achieve children emotional intelligence development and better adjusting to the demands of the school and social environment. Results: Some educated, proficient and highly scoring children can’t manage to have friends, are not happy with their careers, and lives. What makes the difference is a certain development level of social, emotional psychological and movement skills. Conclusions: Social, emotional and motor development contribute heavily to future personal and professional achievements of children. Abstract:Through games a motivating learning climate is provided, generating mainly positive emotions among the students by the very nature of the game. However, while the early stages are the most important for emotional well-being development, research about scientific knowledge of emotional physical education in children is still scarce. The aims of this study were to analyze the intensity of emotions (positive or negative) produced when players took part in games of different social structure, with or without competition (winner or loser), with or without sport experience and to examine the explanations given by the participants for these emotional experiences. Participants (N = 152) were recruited from two Spanish elementary school. We applied Student's t-test and one-factor ANOVA. Students' subjective comments were classified through content analysis in macro-categories and we used the Chi-square Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID, implemented in SPSSTM Answer Tree® 13.0). The application of a mixed-methods approach identified statistically significant differences in four variables: (a) the type of emotion, (b) motor domain, (c) type of outcome (winning, losing, and non-competitive), and (d) sport experience. The intensity of positive emotions was higher (M = 3.71, SD = 0.893) than negative emotions (M = 1.18, SD = 0.253, p < 0.001). Furthermore, negative emotions were felt with different intensities (F 3 = 3.82, p = 0.011, ES = 0.071), depending on the motor action domain. Comments referring to negative emotions were more frequent in individual games. Winning was associated significantly (p < 0.05) with the highest intensity ratings of positive emotions, whereas losing produced the highest values for negative emotions. The intensity ratings for positive or negative emotions not were different between non-competitive games and competitive games. The sport experience relativizes the mean of emotional intensity, both positive and negative. The present study brings the value of considering games as a key role to promote a physical education addressed to the education of social-emotional well-being in schoolchildren, as the basis of academic training. Furthermore, the results could benefit teachers as well as coaches have scientific input to organize teaching content, generating the desired motor behaviors together with positive experiences.

Abstract:In 2017, the “Chess” Scientific Research Institute’s research group of psychologists performed a diagnostic experiment to determine the level and manifestations of emotional intelligence of teachers and students during the teaching and learning of the “Chess” subject. The findings of the preceding investigations were presented at the international conference “Current State and Development Trends in Chess Education,” which was held in Tsaghkadzor in 2019. The following findings were offered after summarizing the outcomes of all methods used throughout the scientific experiment: 1. Chess teachers have a high level of emotional awareness, whereas children may distinguish just pleasure, sadness, and anger as fundamental emotions. 2. Low indicators of the teacher’s empathy and emotional management affect the motivation of 3rd and 4th-grade students to succeed in chess lessons, as well as the negative trend of the position of receiving praise from the teacher, as a result of which the indicator of the manifestation of a favourable position towards the chess teacher decreases. 3. Regardless of the teacher’s positive attitude toward the students, if the teacher’s emotional management and control signs are poor throughout the learning process, the student’s emotional attitude toward their peers and their participation in the chess class diminishes. Based on the analysis of the diagnostic experiment findings, “Chess” Scientific Research Institute psychologists created and tested various game exercises to develop emotional intelligence components in secondary school learners.
Biofeedback-Based Videogames: Fostering Emotion Regulation at a Diverse Community Summer Camp

Abstract:Implementing nonstigmatized mental health interventions and tools within community programs serving diverse populations may reduce inequities in access to mental health care and preventative emotional learning. One potentially impactful tool is Mightier, a heart rate biofeedback-based videogame that aims to foster emotion regulation skills and practice through game play. In a randomized controlled trial, the present study evaluated the efficacy of Mightier when utilized in a community setting. Seventy-two children (ages 7-12) from a low-cost community summer camp were randomly assigned to play Mightier for 6 weeks or continue camp activities as usual. All campers participated in biweekly social and emotional learning groups. Participants exhibited significantly greater levels of adaptive emotion regulation and lower levels of emotional dysregulation, internalizing symptoms, and externalizing behaviors after the intervention. Caregivers of participants in the intervention group also reported significantly less parenting-related stress after the intervention. When incorporated into community programs, biofeedback-based videogames can foster emotional intelligence competencies in children without access to traditional mental health services.
Learning efficacy and user acceptance of a game-based social skills learning environment

Abstract:The objectives of the research study are to investigate how a game-based learning environment affects the learning outcomes of social skills knowledge and user acceptance of children. Social maladjustment places children at risk in early life as it is integral to many emotional, behavioral and psychological problems. The possible deleterious effects of social skills deficits have underscored the importance placed on social skills programs in schools. To address the issue of acquisition of social skills, a Web-based game, as a specific instantiation of educational games for social skills training in a classroom setting, was developed for this research. Besides studying the effectiveness of the game in promoting social skills knowledge acquisition, the study evaluated user acceptance in the game by exploring the two constructs, perceived playability and perceived playfulness. It demonstrated that increasing playability is the key to success of increasing playfulness and excitement in gameplaying. High level of playability brings about the feelings of being joyful and playful in the users. This study also established the importance of playfulness in shaping user acceptance. In other words, a positive perceived playability had a significant effect on perceived playfulness. Perceived playfulness in turn, had a significant influence on user acceptance.

Fostering socio-emotional competencies in children on the autism spectrum using a parent-assisted serious game: A multicenter randomized controlled trial

Abstract:Objective: Serious games are a promising means of fostering socio-emotional skills in children on the autism spectrum (AS). However, empathy and related constructs have not yet been addressed comprehensively and together with emotion recognition, and there is a lack of randomized controlled trials (RCT) to investigate skill maintenance and the transfer to functional behavior. Method: The manualized, parent-assisted serious game Zirkus Empathico (ZE) was tested against an active control group, in a six-week multicenter RCT. Eighty-two children aged 5-10 years on the AS were assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and three-month follow-up. Empathy and emotion recognition skills were defined as the primary outcomes. The secondary outcomes included measures of emotional awareness, emotion regulation, autism social symptomatology (Social Responsiveness Scale), and subjective therapy goals. Results: Training effects were observed after the intervention for empathy (d = 0.71) and emotion recognition (d = 0.50), but not at follow-up. Moderate effects on emotional awareness, emotion regulation, and autism social symptomatology were indicated by the short and mid-term assessments. Parents reported treatment goal attainment and positive training transfer. Conclusion: While a six-week training with ZE failed to induce lasting changes in empathy and emotion recognition, it may be effective for improving emotional awareness and emotion regulation, and mitigate general autism symptomatology. Abstract:Emotional competence (EC) is important for children’s social adjustment and sustainable development. The present study designed a school based emotional competence learning (ECL) program and examined its effectiveness with 56 Chinese preschoolers aged 5–6. A quasi-experimental design was employed to examine the impact of the ECL program on young children’s EC. Two upper Kindergarten classes (Daban) for children aged 5–6 were randomly assigned as experimental group (n = 31, 42% girls, Mage = 68.31 months, SD = 3.75) and control group (n = 25, 44% girls, Mage = 68.16 months, SD = 3.77). The experimental group was engaged in a 15-week ECL program, whereas the control group had similar duration courses without emotional competence training. All the children were administered the Test of Emotion Comprehension, Expression Identification Task, and Emotion Regulation Strategy Inventory before and after the intervention. The results indicated no significant differences between the experimental and control groups in the pre-test. In contrast, the experimental group outperformed the control group in most EC components in the post-test. Meanwhile, the experimental group demonstrated greater increases in EC components. The findings suggest that this ECL program has strong potential as a school-based, structured program for enhancing children’s emotional competence. The educational implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:Self-efficacy beliefs in behavior management (SEBiBM) is a key issue for teachers, while emotional competence is a major contributor to professional success and sustainability in this profession. The investigation of the multifaceted nature of these two constructs may be important in order to take a step toward understanding which emotional competence could foster specific aspects of SEBiBM. To explore this issue, elementary school teachers ( N = 121, 1st-4th grades) answered the Profile of Emotional Competence, which comprises 12 scores of emotional competencies, and a four-dimensional self-efficacy scale for behavior management in the classroom. Results indicate that intrapersonal emotional competencies, as compared to interpersonal competencies, play a major role regarding self-efficacy beliefs. In particular, multiple regression analyses revealed that higher identification and understanding of personal emotions were associated with better perceived self-efficacy on two aspects of SEBiBM. In addition, using other's emotions predicted proactive involvement of the pupil's parent or caregiver. Results are discussed in terms of their contribution to research in educational sciences and in teacher education, particularly with respect to teachers' sustainability in the profession.

Abstract:In traditional school education, the content of health education courses cannot be easily linked to daily life experiences. This results in the low application of acquired knowledge and hinders students from gaining hands-on experience and a sense of accomplishment through courses, thereby lowering the learners’ engagement and willingness to learn. This study designed a board game integrated with augmented reality (AR) for health education; incorporated the card-game, slides, and learning-sheets (CSLS) gamification teaching model into the learning process; and discussed the effectiveness of board games with augmented reality in improving learning outcomes and emotions. The research participants were 52 senior high school students, who were assigned to the experimental (AR health education board game) or control (health education board game) group in the teaching experiment. The research findings reveal the following. The two groups were significantly different in terms of (1) learning outcomes, (2) negative emotions, (3) flow state in the game.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The primary aim of the current study was to develop a multi-methodological teacher training program based on emotional intelligence (EI) as a key competency in order to improve student academic achievement based on two methods: face-to-face instruction and game-based e-learning instruction.METHODS: Seventy-four primary education teachers and their 2069 students were randomly assigned to three groups. The first group of teachers (n = 23) were trained to use a face-to-face method. The objective of the training was that the teachers would be able to implement EI into their teaching to improve academic achievement in their students (n = 645) using face-to-face instruction. For the second group (n = 28), the teachers were trained to use an e-learning gamification method. Similar to the first group, the objective of the training was that the teachers would be able to implement EI into their teaching to improve academic achievement in their students (n = 758) using e-learning gamification instruction. The third group of teachers (n = 23) served as the controls and did not receive any special training, nor did they implement EI into their teaching (n = 666).RESULTS: Implementation of EI into classroom teaching effectively improved academic achievement in primary school students using both methods. However, there was a greater increase in academic achievement and higher teacher satisfaction in the game-based e-learning group. No significant differences in student achievement were observed in the control group.CONCLUSION: Emotional intelligence as a key academic competency.

Abstract:Introduction Play activity has been studied from a scientific point of view relatively recently. Until the middle of the twentieth century, any games were considered only as a way of leisure and/or a tool for transmitting cultural experiences. Objectives The research is aimed at studying play activity as a factor of mental development of a child. Methods The method of work is a bibliographic analysis. Results In psychology, the interest in the role of games in the psychological development of a child is primarily associated with the works of Z. Freud, J. Piaget, L.S. Vygotsky, D.B. Elkonin, who showed the importance of children's imitation games: role-playing, directing, event-based (classification of E.O. Smirnova). Since the 90s of the XX century, this hobby is becoming ever more common. At first, modern board games were created by adults for adults, and then there appeared board games specially designed for adults to play with children (family games) and for playing children's groups. Most of the board games popular with parents belong to the German school. Such games are characterized by relatively simple rules, a short or medium duration of the game, no direct confrontation between players and a low randomness in the course of the game (for example, Carcassonne, Catan, Ticket to Ride, etc.). Conclusions German-style board games develop children's communication skills, voluntary activity, abstract and formal-logical thinking, symbolic function, attention, the ability to cooperate (in cooperative games), imagination, and many games develop the child's outlook and enrich the ideas about the world around and options for social interaction. Abstract:Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience challenges in grasping social-emotional cues, which can result in difficulties in recognizing emotions and understanding and responding to social interactions. Social-emotional intervention is an effective method to improve emotional understanding and facial expression recognition among individuals with ASD. Existing work emphasizes the importance of personalizing interventions to meet individual needs and motivate engagement for optimal outcomes in daily settings. We design a social-emotional game for ASD children, which generates personalized stories by leveraging the current advancement of artificial intelligence. Via a co-design process with five domain experts, this work offers several design insights into developing future AI-enabled gamified systems for families with autistic children. We also propose a fine-tuned AI model and a dataset of social stories for different basic emotions.

Abstract:This article aims to present the construction and characteristics of social-emotional game-based learning (SEGBL) - an intervention program for teachers, which aims to promote teachers' socio-emotional learning (SEL). The program is supported by the positive effects of SEL on students and leans on research claiming a direct and significant correlation between teachers' socio-emotional competencies (SEC), and the advancement of students' SEL. The program method is game-based learning, which by its very nature calls for experience, social interaction and emotional reflection and is particularly suitable for promoting SEL. Teachers' role in developing lifelong learners corresponds to the infrastructure of education systems that have been able to place students' mental health as a primary goal contributing not only to their mental well-being but also to their academic achievements. The Collaborative for Academic, Social Emotional Learning (CASEL) has united these streams into a comprehensive definition of SEL including five domains constituting educational concepts and ways of working. Teachers, who are responsible for imparting SEL skills to their students, must have knowledge of SEL and develop personal SEL skills. Few studies target how to cultivate SEL for adults. This intervention program will try to bridge this gap. This program will be evaluated further in the frame of empirical research.

Abstract:Research on children's emotional competence has received considerable attention in the last decade, including the role of language. Language competence (LC) and emotional competence (EC) comprise multiple components. These components and their specific interrelations have not been studied sufficiently. In our study, we examined relations between multiple components of LC and EC in a sample of 210 school-age children. Five measures represented LC: receptive vocabulary, verbal fluency, literacy, narrative structure, and the narrative use of evaluative devices. Four measures represented EC: expressive emotion vocabulary, declarative emotion knowledge, awareness of mixed emotions, and facial emotion recognition. Results showed strong positive correlations between LC and EC ranging between r = .12 and r = .45. In particular, receptive vocabulary and literacy were closely related to emotion knowledge and awareness of mixed emotions. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed that there is a common general ability factor for LC and EC. We discuss why receptive vocabulary and literacy might be so strongly related to emotion knowledge in school-age children. Our findings have implications for developmental psychologists, educational research, and speech-language pathologists.
