Abstract:Common bentgrass Agrostis capillaris L. is known as tolerant to toxic elements. A hypothesis was examined that its ecotypes growing in historically polluted sites show a limited arsenic uptake and have genetic features that distinguish them from commercially available cultivars. The study was conducted in Złoty Stok, a historical area of arsenic mining. Additionally, two commercial cultivars were grown in pots with arsenic-rich soils. Based on arsenic concentrations in plant roots and shoots, bioconcentration and translocation factors BCF and TF were calculated. Commercial cultivars indicated many times higher BCF shoots and TF values compared to field plants. DNA analysis of leaf blades showed a clear distinction between the plants growing in some sites and patches in the field, and also a gene overlap between the plants in the field and commercial forms. The research did not allow for identification of ecotypes with exceptionally limited arsenic uptake. Moreover, there were no significant differences between the genotypic characteristics of plants growing in polluted sites and those poorly tolerant grown from commercially available seeds. Apparently, other factors, and not genetically determined features, are responsible for A. capillaris tolerance to arsenic in Złoty Stok.

Phytoavailability and uptake of arsenic in ryegrass affected by various amendments in soil of an abandoned gold mining site

Abstract:Abandoned gold mining spoils pose socio-environmental, human, and animal health impacts and threaten sustainability of mineral extraction. Green trials and ecological solutions are required to effectively remediate these contaminated soils and mitigate the associated risks. Here, we carried out a pot experiment using a highly contaminated soil (mean total As = 5104.0 mg/kg) collected from an abandoned mine spoil in Ghana. We aimed to quantify the impacts of compost, iron oxide, and poultry manure on the mobilization, fractionation, and uptake of As by ryegrass (Lolium perenne). The soil amendments were applied at a rate of 5% (w/w) each, separately or in combination. We extracted the mine spoil soil readily-bioavailable As and specific-sorbed As, and determined the As contents in plant and the uptake after harvest. The plant transfer indices for soil-to-root (bioconcentration factor, BCF), soil-to-shoot (bioaccumulation concentration- BAC), and root-to-shoot (translocation factor- TF) were also calculated. Addition of manure increased the mining readily-bioavailable As by 243% and specific-sorbed As by 38%, as compared to the control. Manure addition further aided root As-uptake by 134%, whilst its combination with compost increased uptake by 101%. Lone addition of manure and in combination with compost resulted in BCF above 1, indicating increased As-phytostability. The presence of carbon and iron in the roots of the ryegrass sorbed or precipitated As limited its soil-to-shoot and root-to-shoot transfer. These findings indicate that manure alone and in combination with compost can be used to augment the phytoremediation efficiency of ryegrass in the As-contaminated spoil.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES Retrospective evaluation of the use of the free PSA index before prostatic biopsies. MATERIAL AND METHODS The authors retrospectively studied the values for total PSA, free PSA, and free PSA index (ratio of free PSA over total PSA expressed as a %) in men with a total PSA between 2 and 10 ng/ml, from a population of 391 men prior to prostatic biopsies. They also isolated a subgroup of patients in whom the free PSA index could have been used as a first-line marker to decide whether or not to perform prostatic biopsies. RESULTS The mean values for total PSA, free PSA, and free PSA index were compared as a function of the diagnosis, age, and ultrasound prostatic volume. The yields of the various cut-off values for the free PSA index for PSA between 2 and 4 ng/ml, 4 and 10 ng/ml, and 2 and 10 ng/ml with a normal digital rectal examination are reported. Between 2 to 10 ng/ml, at a cut-off value of 30%, 94.1% of cancers would have been detected (sensitivity) and 22% of biopsies would have been avoided, 10 of which would have been useless, i.e. a 30.3% economy of useless biopsies not performed (specificity). At the cut-off value of 15%, less than half of cancers would have been detected (47.1%) and 90.9% of useless biopsies would have been avoided. Biases creating difficulties of interpretation were the assay kits, the reference population, age, storage of sera, and prostatic volume. CONCLUSION The free PSA index would be a useful first-line parameter in only 12.7% of candidates for prostatic biopsies. The cut-off value of 30%, validated for our assay method, would be able to detect the majority of cancers in men aged 50 to 65 years, while avoiding biopsies in the third of men with no detectable cancer.

Abstract:Particulate and dissolved metal(loid) release from mine tailings is of concern in (semi-) arid environments where tailings can remain barren of vegetation for decades and, therefore, become highly susceptible to dispersion by wind and water. Erosive weathering of metalliferous tailings can lead to arsenic contamination of adjacent ecosystems and increased risk to public health. Management via phytostabilization with the establishment of a vegetative cap using organic amendments to enhance plant growth has been employed to reduce both physical erosion and leaching. However, prior research suggests that addition of organic matter into the oxic weathering zone of sulfide tailings has the potential to promote the mobilization of arsenate. Therefore, the objective of the current work was to assess the impacts of phytostabilization on the molecular-scale mechanisms controlling arsenic speciation and lability. These impacts, which remain poorly understood, limit our ability to mitigate environmental and human health risks. Here we report on subsurface biogeochemical transformations of arsenic and iron from a three-year phytostabilization field study conducted at a Superfund site in Arizona, USA. Legacy pyritic tailings at this site contain up to 3 g kg-1 arsenic originating from arsenopyrite that has undergone oxidation to form arsenate-ferrihydrite complexes in the top 1 m. Tailings were amended in the top 20 cm with 100, 150, or 200 g kg-1 (300-600 T ha-1) of composted organic matter and seeded with native halotolerant plant species. Treatments and an unamended control received irrigation of 360 ± 30 mm y-1 in addition to 250 ± 160 mm y-1 of precipitation. Cores to 1 m depth were collected annually for three years and sectioned into 20 cm increments for analysis by synchrotron iron and arsenic X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) coupled with quantitative wet chemical and mass balance methods. Results revealed that > 80% of arsenic exists in ammonium oxalate-extractable and non-extractable phases, including dominantly ferrihydrite and jarosite. Arsenic release during arsenopyrite oxidation resulted in both downward translocation and As(V) attenuation by stable Fe(III)(oxyhydr)oxide and Fe(III) (hydroxy)sulfate minerals over time, highlighting the need for sampling at multiple depths and time points for accurate interpretation of arsenic speciation, lability, and translocation in weathering profiles. Less than 1% of total arsenic was highly-labile, i.e. water-extractable, from all treatments, depths, and years, and more than 99% of arsenate released by arsenopyrite weathering was attenuated by association with secondary minerals. Although downward translocation of both arsenic and iron was detected during phytostabilization by temporal enrichment analysis, a similar trend was measured for the uncomposted control, indicating that organic amendment associated with phytostabilization practices did not significantly increase arsenic mobilization over non-amended controls.

Abstract:Eisenia fetida is an earthworm species often used to assess the toxicity of contaminants in soils. Several studies indicated that its response can be unpredictable because it depends both on total concentrations of contaminants and also on their forms that differ in susceptibility to be released from soil solid phase. The issue is complex because two various uptake routes are concurrently involved, dermal and ingestion in guts, where the bioavailability of contaminants can considerably change. The aim of this study was to analyze the toxicity of arsenic (As) in various strongly contaminated meadow and forest soils, representative for former As mining and processing area, to earthworms E. fetida and its accumulation in their bodies. An attempt was made to find relationships between the response of earthworms and chemical extractability of As. In the bioassay, carried out according to the standard ISO protocol, different endpoints were applied: earthworm survival, fecundity measured by the numbers of juveniles and cocoons, earthworm weight and As accumulation in the bodies. The results proved that E. fetida can tolerate extremely high total As concentrations in soils, such as 8000 mg/kg, however, the individual endpoints were not correlated and showed different patterns. The most sensitive one was the number of juveniles. No particular soil factor was identified that would indicate an exceptionally high As susceptibility to the release from one of soils, however, we have demonstrated that the sum of non-specifically and specifically bound As (i.e. fractions F1 + F2 in sequential extraction according to Wenzel) could be a good chemical indicator of arsenic toxicity to soil invertebrates.

Arsenic Removal by As-hyperaccumulator Pteris Vittata from Two Contaminated Soils: A 5-Year Study.

Abstract:The ability of As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata to remove As from two contaminated soils (CCA from an As-treated wood facility and DVA from a cattle-dipping vat) over 5 years was investigated for the first time. The goal was to evaluate P. vittata's ability to continuously remove As during 10 harvests and identify how soil As was affected by P. vittata under P-sufficient (P-fertilizer) and P-limiting (phosphate rock) conditions. Sequential extraction was used to determine changes in metal distribution among different soil fractions. The high frond biomass production occurred on the 9th (62.1-63.9 and 35.6-63.5 g plant(-1)) and 10th harvest (58.6-60.7 and 51.9-57.1 g plant(-1)) for CCA and DVB soils, though frond As concentration decreased. Soil arsenic removal averaged 7-10% per harvest during the 1-6th harvests and was reduced to 0-3% during the 7-10th harvests for DVA and CCA soils. Arsenic from all fractions, excluding the residual fraction, was affected by plant uptake. The largest reduction occurred in the amorphous fraction of CCA-soil at 64-66% (61.2-61.5 to 20.8-21.8 mg kg(-1)) and in the crystalline fraction of DVA-soil at 50-86% (2.18-4.35 to 0.61-1.10 mg kg(-1)). Soil As concentrations were reduced by 37-47% from 26.7 to 129 to 15.6-16.8 and 68.9-70.1 mg kg(-1) for the DVA and CCA soils, respectively. Our data indicated that P. vittata efficiently solubilized non-labile As under P-limiting conditions without impacting its As depletion. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Reclamation of arsenic contaminated soils around mining site using solidification/stabilization combined with revegetation

Abstract:Arsenic (As) is a known carcinogen and is one of the most commonly reported contaminants in farmland soils around mining sites. This study aimed to investigate four different soil amendments (rice husk biochar (RHB), maple leaf biochar (MLB), red mud (R.M), and steel slag (S.S)) with respect to the stabilization of arsenic in soil combined with revegetation of two hyperaccumulators (Asteraceae (lettuce) and Brassicaceae (mustard green)). Soil amendments at different application rates (0.5%, 1%, and 2% w/w) and small particle sizes (<74 μm) were added to the soil. A different pattern was observed for stabilization of As in treated soils. A meaningful decline in As stabilization was observed with increasing application dosage of MLB, R.M, and S.S, while in case of RHB efficiency was increased. Generally, maximum stabilization efficiency of As was observed following the adding of RHB (2%), MLB (0.5%), R.M (0.5%), and S.S (0.5%), by 90%, 94%, 94%, and 89%, respectively, which was primarily attributed to amendments-induced specific surface area within the structure. For lettuce, As was strongly accumulated by leaves, while As, for mustard green, was extracted much more by its roots. Sequential extraction analysis confirmed high proportions of Fe and Mn oxides and organic fractions of As, before and after planting. Altogether, the establishment of a suitable plant cover on treated soil with amendments showed encouraging results for preventing the dispersion of As through runoff and percolation. Besides, this combined technique, which is aesthetically pleasant, increases biodiversity.

Effects of Arsenic Species and Concentrations on Arsenic Accumulation by Different Fern Species in A Hydroponic System

Abstract:Two hydroponic experiments were conducted to evaluate factors affecting plant arsenic (As) hyperaccumulation. In the first experiment two As hyperaccumulators (Pteris vittata and P. cretica mayii) were exposed to I and 10 mg L-1 arsenite (AsIII) and monomethyl arsenic acid (MMA) for 4 wk Total As concentrations in plants (fronds and roots) and solution were determined. In the second experiment, P. Vittata and Nephrolepis exaltata (a non-As hyperaccumulator) were exposed to 5 mg L-1 arsenate (AsV) and 20 mgL(-1) AsIII for 1 and 15 d. Total As and AsIII concentrations in plants were determined. Compared to P. cretica mayii P. vittata was more efficient in arsenic accumulation (1075-1666 vs. 249-627 mg kg(-1) As in the fronds) partially because it is more efficient in As translocation. As translocation factor (As concentration ratio in fronds to roots) was 3.0-5.6 for P. vittata compared to 0.1 to 4.8 for P. cretica. Compared to N. exaltata, P. vittata was significantly more efficient in arsenic accumulation (38-542 vs. 4.8-71 mgkg(-1) As in the fronds) as well as As translocation (1.3-5.6 vs. 0.2-0.5). In addition, P. vittata was much more efficient in As reduction from AsV to AsIII (83-84 vs. 13-24% AsIII in the fronds). Little As reduction occurred after 1-d exposure to AsV in both species indicates that As reduction was not instantaneous even in an As hyperaccumulator. Our data were consistent with the hypothesis that both As translocation and As reduction are important for plant As hyperaccumulation.
In-situ Phytoremediation of Arsenic from Contaminated Soil

Abstract:Arsenic contamination in the world is worrisome, excessive and increasing. In this study, the research was designed for the remediation of arsenic polluted soil site in Beijing China using in situ treatment method (phytoremediation). Chelating agents ethylenediaminedisuccinic (EDDS), and citric acid (CA) were used to aid the hyper accumulator to enhance quicker extraction rate. A hyper accumulator Chinese brake fern (Pteria vittata) was used with the additions of EDDS and CA at different ratios. The result obtained from the treated soil were analyzed and compared. It showed significant increase in the extraction of Arsenic (As). About 3.55 mg/kg of As was detected in the treated plant biomass whereas the control has 0.98 mg/kg. It was suggested that solubility in the soil after treatment readily for uptake was 3.9 mg/kg. The control plants and the Corn however, had little absorption. It will be more promising, to select hyper accumulator which naturally possess higher biomass and are plants of local and natural origin to peculiar location
Mitigation of arsenic accumulation in crop plants using biofertilizer

Abstract:Elevated levels of arsenic in crop plants have been found in various regions worldwide, especially where agricultural soils have been affected by arsenic-enriched aquifers and human activities including mining, smelting, and pesticide application. Given the highly toxic nature of arsenic, remediation should be carried out immediately to reduce this potentially toxic element transport from soil to crop plants. This study focused on the utilization of biofertilizer which is a combination of arsenic-accumulating microorganisms and adsorbent (carrier) in order to achieve high efficiency of arsenic immobilization and ability to apply in the field. Thirty-two bacterial strains were isolated from 9 soil samples collected from the Dongjin and Duckum mining areas in Korea using a nutrient medium amended with 2 mM sodium arsenite. Among isolates, strain DE12 identified as Bacillus megaterium exhibited the greatest arsenic accumulation capacity (0.236 mg/g dry biomass) and ability to resist up to 18 mM arsenite. Among the three agricultural waste adsorbents studied, rice straw was proved to have a higher adsorption capacity (0.104 mg/g) than rice husk and corn husk. Therefore, rice straw was chosen to be the carrier to form biofertilizer together with strain DE12. Inoculation of biofertilizer in soil showed a reduction of arsenic content in the edible part of lettuce, water spinach, and sweet basil by 17.5%, 34.1%, and 34,1%, respectively compared to the control group. The use of biofertilizer may open up the potential application in the field for other food plants.

Abstract:Recently discovered As-hyperaccumulator ferns hold promise for phytoremediation of As-polluted soils. We investigated changes in the rhizosphere characteristics of Pteris vittata (Chinese Brake fern) relevant for its use in phytoextraction. Plants were grown in rhizoboxes filled with soil containing 2270 mg kg(-1) As. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in rhizosphere soil solution were increased by 86% and appeared to enhance total Fe solubility due to complexation reactions. Despite substantial removal of As by the fern, As was not significantly decreased in the rhizsophere soil solution after one cropping, apparently due to the large buffer capacity of the soil and possibly because of ion competition with DOC. However, the difference between 0.05 M (NH4)(2)SO4-extractable labile As in bulk and rhizosphere soil accounted for 8.9% of total As accumulated in the fern, indicating that As was mainly acquired from less available pools. Moreover, As depletion in the rhizosphere and limited resupply from less available pools were indicated by a 19.3% decreased As flux, measured using the technique of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT). Modeling of the DGT-soil system was able to show that the rate of release from solid phase to solution in the rhizosphere was one-third of that in the bulk soil. Applying the remedial strategy of bioavailable contaminant stripping, which aims at diminishing the phytoavailable pollutant fraction, DGT can be used as a monitoring tool to evaluate the efficiency of phytoextraction and to study the potential resupply of bioavailable pools after phytoextraction has ceased.
Arsenic Uptake by Two Hyperaccumulator Ferns from Four Arsenic Contaminated Soils

Abstract:A greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate and compare arsenic accumulation from four arsenic contaminated soils by two arsenic hyperaccumulators, Pteris vittata and Pteris cretica. After growing in soils for six weeks, the plants were harvested and separated into above- and below-ground biomass. Total As, P, Ca, K, glutathione and biomass were measured for the plants, and total As, Mehlich-3 P and As, exchangeable K and Ca, and arsenic fractionation were performed for the soils. Pteris vittata had significantly higher total biomass (14 g/plant) and As accumulation than P. cretica . Arsenic accumulation in both ferns followed the arsenic concentrations in the soil. The P/As molar ratio in the fronds, growing in arsenic contaminated soils, ranged from 80 to 939 in P. vittata and 130 to 421 in P. cretica . Plant arsenic concentrations were significantly positively correlated with Mehlich-3 arsenic in the soils. Soil pH was also significantly correlated with Mehlich-3 arsenic before and after plant uptake. Plant As uptake was significantly correlated with exchangeable potassium in the soil before plant uptake. Glutathione availability was not implicated as a major detoxification mechanism in these ferns. Though both plants were effective in taking up arsenic from various arsenic contaminated soils, P. vittata was overall a better candidate for phytoremediation of arsenic contaminated soils.

Abstract:Sequential extraction procedures were used to investigate the influence of the microbes on the distribution of arsenic in a Chinese paddy soil under different long-term fertilization treatments. The paddy soil with four long-term fertilization treatments (CK, M, NPK and NPK+M) and three levels of arsenate addition (0, 50, 100 mg As kg(-1) dry soil), were selected to construct microcosms for laboratory incubation. After the incubation, soil samples were sequentially extracted to determine As in various fractions, i.e. water soluble (F0), exchangeable (F1), bound to carbonates (F2), bound to Fe and Mn oxides (F3), bound to organic matter and sulfides (F4), and residual (F5, mineral matrix). Results showed that most of the As was fixed by mineral matrix (F5, ratios ranging from 46.22% to 96.37%), followed by As bound to Fe and Mn oxides (F3, ratios ranging from 3.14% to 28.18%), and the ratios of the other four fractions (F0, F1, F2 and F4) were mostly less than 10%. The microbes in the paddy soil could make As transform from inactive fraction (F5) to relatively active fractions (F0, F1, F2 and F3) and thus increase its environmental risk. With the increase of the As addition levels and with the application of manure or chemical NPK fertilizers, As was distributed more in the relatively active fractions (F0, F1, F2, F3 and F4) in the paddy soil mediated by the microbes. In addition, Fe and Mn oxides could play an important role in decreasing the As leaching potential from the mineral matrix to soil solution and thus abate the As risk to human health.

Abstract:Ryegrass is tolerant to heavy metals and has a strong capacity to accumulate them from the soil.Therefore,it is a promising plant for phytoremediation of soils polluted with heavy metals.One of the toxic effects of heavy metals is to disturb the nutrient balance of plants.The aims of this study were to explore the arsenic-and nutrient absorption characteristics of ryegrass under arsenic stress and to analyze the relationships between As absorption and nutrient accumulation in the stems and leaves.An annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were grown in soil without or with As (100 mg · kg-1) in a pot experiment.After 2 months of growth,the plants were harvested and separated into five parts:old leaves,functional leaves,young leaves,stems,and roots.Then,the As and nutrient contents were determined in each part.The results indicated that annual ryegrass was more As-resistant than perennial ryegrass;the shoot length and root length of annual ryegrass were reduced by 13.3％ and 3.3％,respectively,by As.The dry weights of all five parts of both ryegrass species were lower in the As treatment than in the control,but the decrease was not significant for the old leaves of perennial ryegrass and the roots of annual ryegrass.In both ryegrass species,the As concentration was highest in the roots,followed by the old leaves,stems,functional leaves,and then young leaves.The As-absorption capacity of perennial ryegrass was higher than that of annual ryegrass.In both ryegrass species,the nitrogen,phosphorus,and potassium absorption was highest in young leaves,followed by functional leaves,and then old leaves.The calcium,magnesium,and manganese absorption capacity was highest in old leaves,followed by functional leaves,and then young leaves.There was a highly significant negative correlation between As and Mg content in leaves.The correlation between As and other nutrients varied among plant parts in the two ryegrass species.
Pteris Vittata Continuously Removed Arsenic from Non-Labile Fraction in Three Contaminated-Soils During 3.5 Years of Phytoextraction.

Abstract:We evaluated the effectiveness of arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata to continuously remove As from three contaminated-soils containing 26-126 mg kg(-1) As over 7 harvests in 3.5 years. Changes in As speciation in soils, amended with P fertilizer (P-soil) or insoluble phosphate rock (PR-soil), were assessed via sequential fractionation. Arsenic in available (soluble + exchangeable), non-labile (bound to amorphous + crystalline Fe/Al oxides), and residual fractions constituted similar to 12%, similar to 80%, and similar to 8% of soil As. Soluble As declined while exchangeable As was unchanged, likely due to replenishment from non-labile As, which accounted for similar to 87% of decline in total soil As. Although plant-available As is important, the non-labile As better predicted the frond As concentration in P. vittata, with the correlation being r=0.90 and 0.64 for PR-soils and P-soils. P. vittata removed 44% of soil As from PR-soils compared to 33% from P-soils, suggesting the low-soluble P from PR was more effective than P fertilizer in enhancing As uptake by P. vittata. To facilitate acquisition of P from PR, P. vittata produced larger root biomass to solubilize non-labile As, allowing for more efficient phytoextraction. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:This study examined the effects of heavy metals and plant arsenic uptake on soil arsenic distribution. Chemical fractionation of an arsenic-contaminated soil spiked with 50 or 200mg kg−1 Ni, Zn, Cd or Pb was performed before and after growing the arsenic hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L for 8weeks using NH4Cl (water-soluble plus exchangeable, WE-As), NH4F (Al-As), NaOH (Fe-As), and H2SO4 (Ca-As). Arsenic in the soil was present primarily as the recalcitrant forms with Ca-As being the dominant fraction (45%). Arsenic taken up by P. vittata was from all fractions though Ca-As contributed the most (51–71% reduction). After 8weeks of plant growth, the Al-As and Fe-As fractions were significantly (p<0.01) greater in the metal-spiked soils than the control, with changes in the WE-As fraction being significantly (p=0.007) correlated with plant arsenic removal. The plant's ability to solubilize soil arsenic from recalcitrant fractions may have enhanced its ability to hyperaccumulate arsenic.

Abstract:A large-scale hydroponic system to phytoremediate arsenic-contaminated groundwater using Pteris vittata (Chinese brake fern) was successfully tested in a field. In this 30-wk study, three frond-harvesting regimes (all, mature, and senescing fronds) and two water-refilling schemes to compensate for evapotranspiration (high-As water of 140–180μg/L and low-As water of <7μg/L) were investigated. Two experiments (Cycle 1 and Cycle 2) were conducted using the same plants in 24 tanks with each containing 600L of arsenic-contaminated groundwater and 32 ferns. During Cycle 1 and with initial As of 140μg/L, As in tanks refilled with low-As water was reduced to <10μg/L in 8wks compared to <10μg/L in 17wks in tanks refilled with high-As water. During Cycle 2 and with initial As of 180μg/L, the remediation time was reduced by 2–5wks, indicating that more established ferns were more efficient. In areas where clean water is limiting, refilling high-As water coupled with harvesting senescing fronds is recommended for more effective As phytoremediation.

Abstract:Arsenic (As), a toxic metalloid that is becoming more and more concentrated in the environment, poses risks to human health, plant production, and species at every trophic level through bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Finding tolerant and hyperaccumulative plant species that can be used in contaminated land is a potential eco-friendly strategy for As removal in terms of its mitigation. Tagetes erecta L. is an ornamental plant species chosen as phytoremediator plant for As removal. To assess the morphological and biochemical changes we conducted pot experiments with plants that were treated with different concentration of sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4) for up to 60 days. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS) was used to measure the amount of As absorbed in various tissues of the plant. Highest As accumulation was detected in root tissues (12.864 mg kg -1 ), whereas shoot had least quantity of As (3.443 mg kg -1 ). With increasing As concentrations, the maximum levels of proline and polyphenol were 14.743 μ mol g -1 and 4.25 mg g -1 , respectively. At 60 days, antioxidant enzymes APX (6.952 mM mg -1 ), CAT (2.143 mM mg -1 ), and GR (76.631 mM mg -1 ) were found to be increased. As transport and distribution were confirmed by anatomical analysis in root and shoot tissues by FESEM-EDX, TEM, and light microscopy. The results obtained after morpho-physiological and anatomical studies are in favor of high degree of tolerance of As concentration (25 mg kg -1 ) by T. erecta suggesting that it could be a potential phytoremediator of As from polluted soil.

Abstract:Arsenic (As)-contaminated soils occur widely worldwide. In the present study, three low-cost Fe/Al-based materials, including red soil (RS), sponge iron filter (SIF) and Al-based water treatment sludge (WTS), were applied as amendments to remediate As-contaminated soils under anoxic conditions. After 180 d of incubation, the proportion of the sum of nonspecifically absorbed As (F1) and specifically absorbed As (F2) to the total As was reduced by 6%, 52% and 13% with 5% of RS, SIF and WTS addition, respectively, compared to the control soil (31%). The results showed that among the three amendments, SIF was the most effective at decreasing As bioaccessibility in soils. Compared with RS and WTS, SIF intensified the decrease of labile fractions and the increase of unlabile fractions, and the redistribution of the amorphous oxide-bound fraction (F3) and crystalline hydrous oxide-bound fraction (F4) occurred in the SIF-amended soil. Moreover, the As stabilization processes were divided into two stages in the control and RS-amended soil, while the processes were divided into three stages in both SIF- and WTS-treated soil. The As stabilization processes in all treated soils were characterized by the transformation of labile fractions into more immobilizable fractions, except for F4 transforming into F3 in the first stage in SIF-amended soil. Correspondingly, inner-surface complexation and occlusion within Fe/Al hydroxides were the common driving mechanisms for the transformation of As fractions. Therefore, taking into consideration the results of this study, SIF could be a more promising alternative than the other two materials to passivate As in anoxic soils.
