Abstract:We have previously reported that the application of a DC field can adjust the position and/or bandwidth of the selective reflection notch in polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs). The proposed mechanism of these electro-optic (EO) response is ion-facilitated electromechanical deformation of the polymer stabilizing network. Accordingly, the concentration of ions trapped within the polymer network should considerably influence the EO response of PSCLC. Our prior studies have indicated that photoinitiators can increase ion density in PSCLC by an order of magnitude. Here, we isolate the contribution of ionic impurities associated with liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) by utilizing initiator-less polymerization. PSCLCs prepared with LCM with low ion concentration show bandwidth broadening of the reflection band whereas PSCLCs prepared with LCM with high ion concentration exhibit a red shifting tuning of the reflection band. The extent of the tuning or bandwidth broadening of the CLC reflection band depends on the concentration of LCMs and the chirality of the LCM.

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) are molecules that can self-assemble into helicoidal superstructures exhibiting circularly polarized reflection. The facile self-assembly and resulting optical properties makes CLCs a promising technology for an array of industrial applications, including reflective displays, tunable mirror-less lasers, optical storage, tunable color filters, and smart windows. The helicoidal structure of CLC can be stabilized via in situ photopolymerization of liquid crystal monomers in a CLC mixture, resulting in polymer-stabilized CLCs (PSCLCs). PSCLCs exhibit a dynamic optical response that can be induced by external stimuli, including electric fields, heat, and light. In this review, we discuss the electro-optic response and potential mechanism of PSCLCs reported over the past decade. Multiple electro-optic responses in PSCLCs with negative or positive dielectric anisotropy have been identified, including bandwidth broadening, red and blue tuning, and switching the reflection notch when an electric field is applied. The reconfigurable optical response of PSCLCs with positive dielectric anisotropy is also discussed. That is, red tuning (or broadening) by applying a DC field and switching by applying an AC field were both observed for the first time in a PSCLC sample. Finally, we discuss the potential mechanism for the dynamic response in PSCLCs.

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) spontaneously organizing into a periodic helical structure with a twist axis perpendicular to the local director can reflect selected wavelengths of circularly polarized light. The structural color can be easily controlled by manipulating the helical structure, temperature, electric field, and magnetic field. Despite the unique structure and superior performances, free-standing CLCs with confined fluidity, stimuli response, and high structure stability at high temperatures still remain a challenge. Herein, we report a simple and controllable preparation of a novel type of free-standing 3D confined polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal particles (PSCLCPs) based on the microfluidic emulsification, interfacial polymerization, and UV curing. The size of PSCLCPs can be precisely controlled by adjusting the flow rates of the injected fluids in a microfluidic chip. The fluidity of CLCs is effectively restricted within the physical confinement of the polymer layer, the PSCLCPs present reversible thermal response between the cholesteric phase and the isotropic phase. The CLC domains in microcapsules possess superior microstructure stability at high temperatures (near 220 °C). The stand-alone PSCLCPs with confined fluidity, stimuli response and high structure stability at high temperatures will provide ever better performances in their tremendous applications in the field of smart photonic and electro-optical devices.
Enhanced electrically-induced bandwidth broadening via stratification of polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals

Abstract:The periodic nanostructure of the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) phase inherently exhibits a selective reflection. Polymerization of small concentrations of monomer can stabilize the cholesteric liquid crystal phase. Recent reports detail that in certain conditions, polymer stabilized networks retain structural chirality upon polymerization in CLC media. The retention of structural chirality allows the polymer stabilized network to effectively act as a through-the-thickness anchoring layer. The structural chirality retained in the polymer stabilizing network can be deformed via ion-mediated electromechanical coupling to enable dynamic control of the selective reflection via application of a DC field. Prior reports have nearly exclusively utilized photopolymerization of acrylate monomers to prepare homogenously distributed polymer stabilized network through the thickness of the CLC. Here, we detail that the electro-optic response, visualized here as reflection bandwidth broadening, can be enhanced by the copolymerization of acrylate and methacrylate liquid crystalline monomers. This report details systematic study of the contribution of monomer composition (copolymerization), cell thickness, and initiating intensity to the resulting electro-optic response of the PSCLC. The electrical regulation of reflection bandwidth is of potential interest to functional applications in the built environment, photonics, and consumer products.

Abstract:Polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) have emerged as promising candidates for one-dimensional photonic lattices that enable precise tuning of the photonic band gap (PBG). This work systematically investigates the effect of polymer concentrations on the AC electric field-induced tuning of the PBG in PSCLCs, in so doing it explores a range of concentrations and provides new insights into how polymer concentration affects both the stabilization of cholesteric textures and the electro-optic response. We demonstrate that low polymer concentrations (≈3 wt. %) cause a blue shift in the short wavelength band edge, while high concentrations (≈10 wt. %) lead to a contraction and deterioration of the reflection band. Polarization optical microscopy was conducted to confirm the phase transition induced by the application of an electric field. The observations confirm that increased polymer concentration stabilizes the cholesteric texture. Particularly, the highly desired fingerprint texture was stabilized in a sample with 10 wt. % of the polymer, whereas it was unstable for lower polymer concentrations. Additionally, higher polymer concentrations also improved the dissymmetry factor and stability of the lasing emission, with the dissymmetry factor reaching the value of around 2 for samples with 10 wt. % of polymer additive. Our results provide valuable comprehension into the design of advanced PSCLC structures with tunable optical properties, enhancing device performance and paving the way for innovative photonic applications.

Abstract:The reflection band of polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy can be broadened by DC electric fields, which was ascribed to the pitch gradient caused by the motion of the structural chirality, that is, the polymer network. They systematically varied the mixture components, such as the photo-initiator concentration, the monomer functionality, and the chiral dopant, to explore their influences on the reflection band broadening behavior. They learned how to control the polymer network morphology and ion density, which in turn determined the reflection bandwidth. Abstract:Electrically responsive photonic crystals represent one of the most promising intelligent material candidates for technological applications in optoelectronics. In this research, dye-doped polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals（PSCLCs） with negative dielectric anisotropy were fabricated, and mirrorless lasing with an electrically tunable wavelength was successfully achieved. Unlike conventional liquid-crystal lasers, the proposed laser aided in tuning the emission wavelength through controlling the reflection bandwidth based on gradient pitch distribution. The principal advantage of the electrically controlled dye-doped PSCLC laser is that the electric field is applied parallel to the helical axis, which changes the pitch gradient instead of rotating the helix axis, thus keeping the heliconical structure intact during lasing. The broad tuning range（～110 nm） of PSCLC lasers,coupled with their stable emission performance, continuous tunability, and easy fabrication, leads to its numerous potential applications in intelligent optoelectronic devices, such as sensing, medicine, and display.

Abstract:The electro-optic response of polymer stabilised cholesteric liquid crystals can manifest as switching, tuning, or bandwidth broadening. The electro-optic response of these composites is attributed to the delocalisation of the ion-containing, structurally chiral polymer stabilising network to a DC bias. Upon removal of the electric field, the original reflective properties return within seconds. Prior reports have hypothesized that the polymer network trap ionic impurities during polymerization. Here, we explore this hypothesis by introducing ionic liquids as well as copolymerizing ionic monomers into the polymer network. This work further elucidates the contribution of ionic species to the electrochemical properties of the composite material as well as the associated impact on electro-optic performance.

Abstract:A series of polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) cells were prepared by photo-polymerization of a cholesteric liquid crystal (Ch-LC) mixture containing a nonreactive LC, a nematic diacrylate and a novel cholesteryl monomer. The influence of the specific rotation and concentration of the chiral dopants, and the polymerization temperature on reflection properties was investigated. The results demonstrate that the reflection band was broadened after polymerization for all the systems both left-handed S811 and right-handed R1011 as the chiral dopant, which is speculated to be a result of an inhomogeneous consumption of the chiral monomer within the system. Additionally, the polymer temperature plays an integral role in the observed reflection spectra, and at optimum polymerization temperature the broadband reflection effect becomes much more pronounced. Abstract:A series of polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) films were prepared from cholesteric liquid crystal (Ch-LC) mixtures containing different components such as non-reactive LC monomer, polymerizable monomer, chiral dopant, dye, and photoinitiator upon polymerization. The influence of the polymerizable monomer and dye of Ch-LC mixtures on the reflection properties was investigated. The reflection bandwidth for all the samples can be increased by photo-polymerization, and the network upon polymerization derived from two different polymerizable monomers with both one and two functional groups is more effective than that from one polymerizable monomer for broadening the reflection band. Especially, a dye-doped Ch-LC film can reflect incident light with the bandwidth over the wavelength range of 550-2350 nm, which is due to a greater pitch gradient formed inside of Ch-LC film. The gradient pitch network structure was firstly demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the film prepared from high diacrylate monomer concentration and subsequently proved by using a wash-out/refill method. The nematic liquid crystals monomers was infiltrated into the polymer network that was prefabricated by removing the low molar weight LCs from the original PSCLCs film, and SEM exhibited the existence of a pitch gradient across the film thickness. The refilled nematic liquid crystals film showed broadband reflection after polymerzition, too. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Electrical reconfiguration of the cholesteric liquid crystal phase is subject to extensive prior research. Here, a distinctive composition that allows the typically singular selective reflection to be split into two distinct and tunable selective reflections with an electric field is reported. The distinctive electro‐optic phenomena (reflection notch splitting) are shown to be composition dependent and enabled by the introduction of appreciable amounts of side chain liquid crystalline mesogens. Functional opportunities enabled by the distinguished control of the two reflection elements are demonstrated, including spectrally variant polarization filters.

Abstract:Polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) are electrically reconfigurable reflective elements. Prior studies have hypothesized and indirectly confirmed that the electro-optic response of these composites is associated with the electrically mediated distortion of the stabilizing polymer network. The proposed mechanism is based on the retention of structural chirality in the polymer stabilizing network, which upon deformation is spatially distorted, which accordingly affects the pitch of the surrounding low molar-mass liquid crystal host. Here, we utilize fluorescent confocal polarized microscopy to directly assess the electro-optic response of PSCLCs. By utilizing dual fluorescent probes, sequential imaging experiments confirm that the periodicity of the polymer stabilizing network matches that of the low molar-mass liquid crystal host. Further, we isolate distinct ion-polymer interactions that manifest in certain photopolymerization conditions.

Abstract:Electrical control of the pitch has been reported in a variant of the cholesteric liquid crystal phase composed of chiral dopants and liquid crystal dimers with a bent conformation, such as CB7CB. For a finite range of applied electric field, the dimeric mesogens assume an oblique helicoidal structure, in which the helical axis is aligned along the electric field and the local director is tilted towards the helical axis (rather than being perpendicular to it). An electric field can directly regulate the periodicity (pitch), allowing reconfiguration of the optical response from a scattering or transparent state to a reflective state. Here, we employ po stabilization to retain the oblique helicoidal state absent an applied field. The polymer stabilized oblique helicoidal structures were investigated under various conditions and material compositions. With polymer stabilization, the magnitude of the selective reflection is found to be dependent on the strength of the applied field. Comparison of the electro-optical response of samples with and without a polymer network elucidates the relative role of boundary conditions, anchoring strength, and elastic energy on the stability of the oblique helicoidal state.

Abstract:In this paper, by using a novel polymer network and an ion-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy, we successfully fabricated a bistable polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) thin film by the optically-induced polymerization of acrylate monomers followed by the thermal curing of epoxy groups. The stepwise processes not only enable an enhancement in the mechanical properties of PDLC films but also a stabilization of cholesteric textures by polymer networks. The bistable memory effects came from the anchoring properties of polymer networks formed within the microdroplets of PDLCs. The devices prepared from the films can be reversibly switched between a transparent state and an opaque state by an electric field. When the electric field is removed, the states are retained. Therefore, the devices are highly energy efficient.

Abstract:Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) droplets with nanoscale periodic helical structures are omnidirectional under planar anchoring, and light is selectively reflected from the droplet center at all directions. However, when CLC droplets are too small, random light scattering dominates. In this regard, we present a facile method to increase the selective Bragg reflection of CLC droplets and demonstrate the unique mechanochromic responses of CLC-droplet-dispersed polymer films. The films are originally opaque and white, when the films are bidirectionally stretched, spherical CLC droplets are squeezed into oblate shape and the point defect at the center of each CLC droplet transitions to a ring defect, greatly increasing the selective Bragg reflection region and resulting in the appearance of structural color. By tuning the helical pitches via the chiral dopant concentration from 1.7 to 3.0 wt %, the desired structural color is achieved. Smart sensors show color changes in response to hydration and dehydration are designed, paving the way for the developments of CLC-based functional materials and smart devices.

Abstract:By optimizing curing temperature, chiral dopant and monomer concentration, we successfully demonstrated a reflective type polymer stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) cell suitable for a polarization independent optical device. The optimized PSCLC showed 30dB attenuation and 12 Vrms driving voltage at 1550nm telecom wavelength.

Abstract:Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) lenses with a cell gap of 11 μm and 30 μm were made from a uniformly dispersed mixture of 40% prepolymer (NOA 65, Norland optical adhesive 65) and 60% E7 liquid crystal. PDLC’s mixture between two ITO coated glasses was polymerized by UV (ultraviolet) curing in the polymerization induced phase separation (PIPS) process. Decline of cell gap is a physical approach to improve the electrooptical properties, while cooling or doping of SiO2 nanoparticles is the microstructural approach to enhance the properties, because the electric field applied to the liquid crystal molecules in LC droplets is inversely proportional to the cell gap. A smaller cell gap significantly and effectively increases the electric field applied to PDLCD devices. The driving voltages and slope for the sample with a cell gap of 11 μm and 30 μm were drastically improved. The driving voltage and the slope of the linear region of PDLC lens with narrow cell gap of 11 μm were drastically enhanced compared to those of the samples with 30 μm cell gap and the cooled and doped samples. These improvements were due to the increase of the applied electric field. However, the response time and contrast ratio were deteriorated. It seems that this deterioration was caused by the sticking or fixing of liquid crystal molecules in LC (liquid crystal) droplets by the intensive electric field applied to the PDLC device.

Abstract:Polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) with a double-handed circularly polarized reflection band are fabricated by a wash-out re II method. By removing the low molar weight Cs from the original PSC C Im, desirable li uid crystals ( Cs) can be in Itrated into a prefabricated polymer network. The result showed that the memory of the polymer network controls the resulting material properties. The concentration of the prefabricated polymer network also plays a relevant role in the formation of a single-layer cholesteric C (Ch- C) structure that has a clear-cut double-handed circularly polarized re ection band. A light-scattering phenomenon occurring in the system alters the re ection proper-ties of Ch- Cs, which is due to the weak anchoring effect of the network when PSC C Im contains a low network concentration. Both kinds of circularly polarized re ection become more obvious with increase in the network concentration, followed by the strong anchoring effect of the network. The techni ue developed in this study has great applications in industries that re uire solid optical functional Ims and coatings.

However, their reflective bands cannot be adjusted, which limits their wide application in many fields. In this paper, a series of ionic chiral ferrocene derivatives (CD-Fc+) as dopants were designed and prepared, and their doping into negative liquid crystal matrix was investigated to develop cholesteric response liquid crystal composites with electrically tunable reflective bands. The effects of electric field frequency, voltage, retention time of voltage and molecular structure on the broadening of reflection bandwidth were investigated in detail.
