Abstract:A scheme of double-negative left-handed atomic vapor medium based on dressed-state assisted simultaneous electric and magnetic resonances is suggested. In this mechanism, simultaneous electric- and magnetic-dipole allowed transitions of atoms are driven by an optical wave by taking full advantage of both mixed-parity dressed-state assisted resonance and incoherent population pumping in a quantum-coherent atomic medium (e.g., alkali-metal atomic vapor). Since the simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability can be achieved in a same frequency band, such an atomic vapor will exhibit an incoherent-gain double-negative refractive index that is three-dimensionally isotropic and homogeneous. The imaginary part of the negative refractive index of the present atomic vapor would be drastically suppressed or would become negative because of loss compensation through incoherent population transfer. The quantum-coherent left-handed atomic vapor presented here will have four characteristics: i) three-dimensionally isotropic and homogeneous negative refractive index, ii) double-negative atomic medium at visible (and infrared) wavelengths, iii) tunable negative refractive index based on dressed-state quantum coherence, and iv) high gain due to incoherent pumping action.

Abstract:Within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we investigate both the radiation force and the potential of Casimir-Polder type acting on an excited cold two-level atom in a cavity made of left-handed materials and topological insulators. As the time-reversal symmetry is broken on the surface of the topological insulators, the spontaneous emission of the atom placed near the focus point(s) exhibits anisotropic properties. While the potential wells are normally shallow for topological trivial dielectric, they may be amplified in the presence of topological magnetoelectric effect. We find that when there exists only one focus point in the cavity, it is possible to boost the forces or the potential wells by up to one order of magnitude. Meanwhile, the lifetime of the atom could be prolonged owing to the focus effect of the left-handed materials, where the emitted photons can trace back to the atom and reabsorbed by itself. Our results indicate the possibility in forming long-lived potential wells, which may have potential applications in trapping and guiding cold atoms far away from the surface. Enhancing Quantum Discord in Cavity Qed by an Added Nonlinear Kerr-Like Medium

Abstract:We investigate the quantum discord dynamics of two noninteracting two-level atoms, each trapped in a single-mode optical cavity which is filled with a nonlinear Kerr-like medium. It is found that quantum discord vanishes only asymptotically although entanglement disappears suddenly during the time evolution. Furthermore, we explore the influence of the nonlinear Kerr-like medium on the dynamics of quantum discord, quantum mutual information, and classical correlation of two atoms. It is shown that the amount of quantum discord, quantum mutual information, and classical correlation of two atoms can be improved by adjusting the value of the Kerr medium. Finally, we also study the effect of phase dissipation on this system by making use of the Monte Carlo wavefunction method. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose an experimentally feasible method for enhancing the atom-field coupling as well as the ratio between this coupling and dissipation (i.e., cooperativity) in an optical cavity. It exploits optical parametric amplification to exponentially enhance the atom-cavity interaction and, hence, the cooperativity of the system, with the squeezing-induced noise being completely eliminated. Consequently, the atom-cavity system can be driven from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling regime for modest squeezing parameters, and even can achieve an effective cooperativity much larger than 100. Based on this, we further demonstrate the generation of steady-state nearly maximal quantum entanglement. The resulting entanglement infidelity (which quantifies the deviation of the actual state from a maximally entangled state) is exponentially smaller than the lower bound on the infidelities obtained in other dissipative entanglement preparations without applying squeezing. In principle, we can make an arbitrarily small infidelity. Our generic method for enhancing atom-cavity interaction and cooperativities can be implemented in a wide range of physical systems, and it can provide diverse applications for quantum information processing.
Quantum limited measurements with lossy optical cavity enabled by dissipative optomechanical coupling

Abstract:We analyze a cavity optomechanical setup, in which position of an oscillator modulates optical loss. We show that in such setup quantum limited position measurements can be performed if the external cavity coupling rate matches the optical loss rate, a condition known as "critical coupling". Additionally, under this condition the setup exhibits a number of potential benefits for practical operation including the complete absence of dynamical backaction, and hence optomechanical instability, and rejection of classical laser noise and thermal fluctuations of cavity frequency from the measurement record. We propose two implementations of this scheme: one based on signal-recycled Michelson-type interferometer and the other on a tilted membrane inside Fabry-Perot cavity.

Enhanced quantum sensing mediated by a cavity in open systems

Abstract:We simulate the dynamics of systems with $N$ = 1-20 qubits coupled to a cavity in order to assess their potential for quantum metrology of a parameter in the open systems limit. The qubits and the cavity are both allowed to have losses and the system is studied under various coupling strength regimes. The focus is primarily on the coupling between the qubits using the quantum Fisher information as the measured parameter. Some results on estimating the qubit-cavity detuning parameter are also presented. We investigate the scaling of the uncertainty in the estimate of the qubit-cavity coupling with the number of qubits and for different initial states of the qubits that act as the quantum probe. As initial probe states, we consider Dicke states with varying excitation numbers, the GHZ state, and separable X-polarized states. It is shown that in the strong coupling regime, i.e., when the coupling between the qubits and the cavity is greater than the decay parameters of both the qubits and the cavity, Dicke states with a large excitation number can achieve the Heisenberg limit, with the precision scaling improving as the excitation number increases. A particularly intriguing finding of our study is that in the weak coupling regime, as well as in situations where either the qubit or cavity decay parameters exceed the coupling, the separable $X$-polarized state is the best in terms of scaling and is even able to achieve the Heisenberg limit in these lossy regimes for the range of $N$ considered.

Abstract:From fundamental studies of light-matter interaction to applications in quantum networking and sensing, cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) provides a platform-crossing toolbox to control interactions between atoms and photons. The coherence of such interactions is determined by the product of the single-pass atomic absorption and the number of photon round-trips. Reducing the cavity loss has enabled resonators supporting nearly 1-million optical roundtrips at the expense of severely limited optical material choices and increased alignment sensitivity. The single-pass absorption probability can be increased through the use of near-concentric, fiber or nanophotonic cavities, which reduce the mode waists at the expense of constrained optical access and exposure to surface fields. Here we present a new high numerical-aperture, lens-based resonator that pushes the single-atom-single-photon absorption probability per round trip close to its fundamental limit by reducing the mode size at the atom below a micron while keeping the atom mm-to-cm away from all optics. This resonator provides strong light-matter coupling in a cavity where the light circulates only ~ 10 times. We load a single 87Rb atom into such a cavity, observe strong coupling, demonstrate cavity-enhanced atom detection with imaging fidelity of 99.55(6) percent and survival probability of 99.89(4) percent in 130 microseconds, and leverage this new platform for a time-resolved exploration of cavity cooling. The resonator's loss-resilience paves the way to coupling of atoms to nonlinear and adaptive optical elements and provides a minimally invasive route to readout of defect centers. Introduction of intra-cavity imaging systems will enable the creation of cavity arrays compatible with Rydberg atom array computing technologies, vastly expanding the applicability of the cavity QED toolbox.

Enhanced quantum sensing with amplification and deamplification

Abstract:Quantum sensing is a fundamental building block of modern technology that employs quantum resources and creates new opportunities for precision measurements. However, previous methods usually have a common assumption that detection noise levels should be below the intrinsic sensitivity provided by quantum resources. Here we report the first demonstration of Fano resonance between coupled alkali-metal and noble gases through rapid spin-exchange collisions. The Fano resonance gives rise to two intriguing phenomena: spin amplification and deamplification, which serve as crucial resources for enhanced sensing. Further we develop a novel scheme of quantum sensing enhanced by amplification and deamplification, with relaxed requirements on the detection noise. The coupled systems of alkali-metal and noble gases act as amplifiers or de-amplifiers, enabling to extract small signals above the detection noise before final detection. We demonstrate magnetic-field measurement about 54 decibels below the photon-shot noise, which outperforms the state-of-the-art squeezed-light technology and realizes femtotesla-level sensitivity. Our work opens new avenues to applications in searches for ultralight dark matter with sensitivity well beyond the supernova-observation constraints.

Abstract:The precision of quantum sensing could be improved by exploiting quantum phase transitions, where the physical quantity tends to diverge when the system approaches the quantum critical point. This critical enhancement phenomenon has been applied to the quantum Rabi model in a dynamic framework, showing a promising sensing enhancement without the need for complex initial state preparation. In this work, we present a quantum phase transition in the coupling cavity-mechanical oscillator system when the coupling strength crosses a critical point, determined by the effective detuning of cavity and frequency of mechanical mode. By utilizing this critical phenomenon, we obtain a prominent enhancement of quantum sensing, such as the position and momentum of the mechanical oscillator. This result provides an alternative method to enhance the quantum sensing of some physical quantities, such as mass, charge, and weak force, in a large mass system.

Abstract:Recent progress has revealed that quantum systems with multiple position-dependent couplings, e.g., giant atoms, can exhibit some unconventional phenomena, such as non-exponential decay. However, their potential applications are still open questions. In this paper, we propose a giant-cavity-based quantum sensor for the first time, whose performance can be greatly enhanced compared to traditional cavity-based sensors. In our proposal, two cavities are coupled to a dissipative reservoir at multiple points while they couple to a gain reservoir in a single-point way. To detect an unknown parameter entering the sensor, a waveguide is coupled to one of the cavities where detecting fields can pass through for homodyne detection. We find that multiple position-dependent couplings can induce an inherent non-reciprocal coupling between the cavities, which can enhance the performance of sensors. Compared to the results in the work of Lau and Clerk, (Nat Commun, 2018, 9: 4,320), our output noise can remain at the shot noise level, which is about one order of magnitude lower. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio per photon is also enhanced by about one order of magnitude. These results showed that the multiple-point coupling structure is beneficial to existing quantum devices.
Homodyne coherent quantum noise cancellation in a hybrid optomechanical force sensor

Abstract:In this paper we propose an experimentally viable scheme to enhance the sensitivity of force detection in a hybrid optomechanical setup assisted by squeezed vacuum injection, beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL). The scheme is based on a combination of the coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) strategy with a variational homodyne detection of the cavity output spectrum in which the phase of the local oscillator is optimized. In CQNC, realizing a negative-mass oscillator in the system leads to exact cancellation of the backaction noise from the mechanics due to destructive quantum interference. Squeezed vacuum injection enhances this cancellation and allows sub-SQL sensitivity to be reached in a wide frequency band and at much lower input laser powers. We show here that the adoption of variational homodyne readout enables us to enhance this noise cancellation up to 40dB compared to the standard case of detection of the optical output phase quadrature, leading to a remarkable force sensitivity of the order of 10−19N/Hz , about 70% enhancement compared to the standard case. Moreover, we show that at nonzero cavity detuning, the signal response can be amplified at a level three to five times larger than that in the standard case without variational homodyne readout, improving the signal-to-noise ratio. Abstract:Measurements of ultrahigh-fidelity absorption spectra can help validate quantum theory, engineer ultracold chemistry, and remotely sense atmospheres. Recent achievements in cavity-enhanced spectroscopy using either frequency-based dispersion or time-based absorption approaches have set new records for accuracy with uncertainties at the sub-per-mil level. However, laser scanning5 or susceptibility to nonlinearities limits their ultimate performance. Here we present cavity buildup dispersion spectroscopy (CBDS) in which the dispersive frequency shift of a cavity resonance is encoded in the cavity's transient response to a phase-locked non-resonant laser excitation. Beating between optical frequencies during buildup exactly localizes detuning from mode center, and thus enables single-shot dispersion measurements. CBDS yields an accuracy limited by the chosen frequency standard, a speed limited by the cavity round-trip time, and is currently 50 times less susceptible to detection nonlinearity compared to intensity-based methods. The universality of CBDS shows promise for improving fundamental research into a variety of light-matter interactions.

Abstract:We present and analyze a method where parametric (two-photon) driving of a cavity is used to exponentially enhance the light-matter coupling in a generic cavity QED setup, with time-dependent control. Our method allows one to enhance weak-coupling systems, such that they enter the strong coupling regime (where the coupling exceeds dissipative rates) and even the ultrastrong coupling regime (where the coupling is comparable to the cavity frequency). As an example, we show how the scheme allows one to use a weak-coupling system to adiabatically prepare the highly entangled ground state of the ultrastrong coupling system. The resulting state could be used for remote entanglement applications.
Twin-beam-enhanced displacement measurement of a membrane in a cavity

Abstract:Ultrasensitive measurement of a small displacement is an essential goal in various applications of science and technology, ranging from large-scale laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors to micro-electro-mechanical-systems-based force microscopy. The least measurable displacement is ultimately limited by the quantum nature of light in a classical optical sensor. Here we use the bright quantum correlated light, i.e., twin beams, generated by a coherent atomic medium to surpass the shot-noise limit (SNL) of the displacement measurement of a membrane in an optical cavity. The sensitivity of 200 $am/\sqrt {Hz}$ is achieved, which is more than two orders of magnitude better than a standard Michelson interferometer. An improvement of 3 $dB$ in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) beyond the SNL is realized at an equivalent optical power, by using quantum correlated light with noise squeezed 7 $dB$ below the vacuum level. Moreover, the frequency correlation of twin beams is directly measured by using optical cavities, and this relation is utilized to reduce the excess classical noise. Additionally, the displacement measurement sensitivity is further substantially enhanced by the cavity mediated dispersion and the SNR is increased by one order of magnitude compared to the free space case. These results provide a novel strategy for the world of precision measurement as well as to control cavity optomechanical systems with non-classical light.

Abstract:Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), the study of the interaction between quantized emitters and photons confined in an optical cavity, is an important tool for quantum science in computing, networking, and synthetic matter. In atomic cavity QED, this approach typically relies upon an ultra-high vacuum chamber that hosts a cold trapped atomic ensemble and an optical cavity. Upgrading the cavity necessitates a months-long laborious process of removing external optics, venting, replacing the resonator, baking, and replacing optics, constituting a substantial bottleneck to innovation in resonator design. In this work, we demonstrate that the flexibility of optical cavities, and the quick turnaround time in switching between them, can be restored with the vacuum loadlock technique--reducing the cycle time to install a cavity, bake it, and transport it into the science chamber to days, achieving 3x10^(-10) Torr pressure in the science chamber. By reducing vacuum limitations, this approach is particularly powerful for labs interested in quickly exploring novel optic cavities, or any other atomic physics relying on in-vacuum optics.

Purcell modified Doppler cooling of quantum emitters inside optical cavities

Abstract:Standard cavity cooling of atoms or dielectric particles is based on the action of dispersive optical forces in high-finesse cavities. We investigate here a complementary regime characterized by large cavity losses, resembling the standard Doppler cooling technique. For a single two-level emitter a modification of the cooling rate is obtained from the Purcell enhancement of spontaneous emission in the large cooperativity limit. This mechanism is aimed at cooling of quantum emitters without closed transitions, which is the case for molecular systems, where the Purcell effect can mitigate the loss of population from the cooling cycle. We extend our analytical formulation to the many particle case governed by weak individual coupling but exhibiting collective strong Purcell enhancement to a cavity mode.

Abstract:Accessing distinctly quantum aspects of the interaction between light and the position of a mechanical object has been an outstanding challenge to cavity-optomechanical systems. Only cold-atom implementations of cavity optomechanics have indicated effects of the quantum fluctuations in the optical radiation pressure force. Here we use such a system, in which quantum photon-number fluctuations significantly drive the center of mass of an atomic ensemble inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. We show that the optomechanical response both amplifies and ponderomotively squeezes the quantum light field. We also demonstrate that classical optical fluctuations can be attenuated by 26 dB or amplified by 20 dB with a weak input pump power of < 40 pW, and characterize the optomechanical amplifier's frequency-dependent gain and phase response in both the amplitude and phase-modulation quadratures.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics places noise limits and sensitivity restrictions on physical measurements. The balance between unwanted backaction and the precision of optical measurements imposes a standard quantum limit (SQL) on interferometric systems. In order to realize a sensitivity below the SQL, it is necessary to leverage a backaction evading measurement technique, reduce thermal noise to below the level of backaction, and exploit cancellations of any excess noise contributions at the detector. Many proof of principle experiments have been performed, but only recently has an experiment achieved sensitivity below the SQL. In this work, we extend that initial demonstration and realize sub-SQL sensitivity nearly two times better than previous measurements, and with an architecture applicable to interferometric gravitational wave detectors. In fact, this technique is directly applicable to Advanced LIGO, which could observe similar effects with a detuned signal recycling cavity. We measure a total sensitivity below the SQL by 2.8 dB, corresponding to a reduction in the noise power by 72±5.1% below the quantum limit. Through the use of a detuned cavity and the optical spring effect, this noise reduction is tunable, allowing us to choose the desired range of frequencies that fall below the SQL. Excess optical quantum noise in atomic sensors

Abstract:Enhanced nonlinear optical response of a coherent atomic medium is the basis for many atomic sensors, and their performance is ultimately limited by the quantum fluctuations of the optical read-out. Here we demonstrate that off-resonant interactions can significantly modify the quantum noise of the optical field, even when their effect on the mean signal is negligible. We illustrate this concept by using an atomic magnetometer based on the nonlinear Faraday effect: the rotation of the light polarization is mainly determined by the resonant light-induced spin alignment, which alone does not change the photon statistics of the optical probe. Yet, we found that the minimum noise of output polarization rotation measurements is above the expected shot noise limit. This excess quantum noise is due to off-resonant coupling and grows with atomic density. We also show that the detection scheme can be modified to reduce the measured quantum noise (even below the shot-noise limit) but only at the expense of the reduced rotational sensitivity. These results show the existence of previously unnoticed factors in fundamental limitations in atomic magnetometry and could have impacts in many other atom-light based precision measurements.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to realize the phase-preserving amplification without the restriction of resolved sideband condition. As a result, our gain-bandwidth product is about one magnitude larger than the existing proposals. In our model, an additional cavity is coupled to the cavity-optomechanical system. Therefore our operating frequency is continuously tunable via adjusting the coupling coefficient of the two cavities.
