Abstract:A technique for encapsulating fluorescent organic probes in a micelle system offers an important alternative method to manufacture watersoluble organic nanoparticles (ONPs) for use in sensing Hg2+. This article reports on a study of a surfactant-free micelle-like ONPs based on a 3,6-di(2-thieny1)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (TDPP) amphiphile, (2(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)-3,6-di(2-thiophyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo [3,4-c] pyrrole-1,4-dione (NDPP) fabricated to monitor Hg2+ in water. NDPP was synthesized through a simple one-step modification of a commercially available dye TDPP with a flexible and hydrophilic alkoxy. This study reports, for the first time, that TDPP dyes can respond reversibly, sensitively, and selectively to Hg2+ through TDPP-Hg-TDPP complexation, similar to the well-known thymine(T) Hg thymine(T) model and the accompanying molecular aggregation. Interestingly, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirmed that, in water, NDPP forms loose micelle-like fluorescent ONPs with a hydrohobic TDPP portion encapsulated inside. These micelle-like nanoparticles offer an ideal location for TDPP Hg complexation with a modest molecular aggregation, thereby providing both clear visual and spectroscopic signals for Hg2+ sensing. An estimated detection limit of 11 nM for Hg2+ sensing with this NDPP nanoparticle was obtained. In addition, NDPP ONPs show good water solubility and high selectivity to Hg2+ in neutral or alkalescent water. It was superior to most micelle based nanosensors, which require a complicated process in the selection or synthesis of suitable surfactants. The determinations in real samples (river water) were made and satisfactory results were achieved. This study provides a low-cost strategy for fabricating small molecule-based fluorescent nanomaterials for use in sensing Hg2+. Moreover, the NDPP nanoparticles show potential ability in Hg2+ ion adsorption and recognization of cysteine using NDPP-Hg composite particle.

Abstract:Mercury(ii), which is a well-known toxic species, exists in the industrial waste water in many cases. In the present work, CdTe quantum dots (QDs) are studied as a fluorescence probe for Hg2+ detection. Ag ions are induced to QDs to enlarge their detection concentration range. l-cysteine is employed in the QD-based fluorescence probe to connect QDs with Hg2+. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicate the formation of zinc blende CdTe QDs with sizes of ∼5 nm and the existence of Ag+ in crystalline CdTe. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra and PL decay spectra were acquired to investigate the emission mechanism of Ag-doped CdTe QDs, revealing multi-emission in QD samples with higher concentrations of Ag+ doping. The highest PL quantum yield of the QD samples was 59.4%. Furthermore, the relationship between the fluorescence intensity and the concentration of Hg2+ has been established. Two linear relationships were obtained for the plot of F/F0 against Hg2+ concentration, enlarging the detection concentration range of Hg2+.
Efficient Mercury Ion Detection in Water: CdTe/CdS/ZnS Quantum Dots as a Simple, Sensitive, and Rapid Fluorescence Sensor

Abstract:Mercury (Hg), a notorious heavy metal with detrimental impacts on human health and the environment, necessitates the development of precise measurement methods. This study introduces an expeditious and straightforward photochemical approach to synthesize thioglycolic acid (TGA)-stabilized CdTe/CdS/ZnS core/multi-shell quantum dots (QDs). The synthesized CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs were comprehensively characterized using fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and X-Ray diffraction (XRD). XRD and EDS results confirmed the successful formation of CdTe/CdS/ZnS structure. Also, FESEM and TEM results showed that CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs were spherical. Results showed that synthesized Exhibiting vibrant green fluorescence and notable quenching in the presence of Hg2+ ions, these QDs emerge as promising candidates for fabricating a fluorescent sensor. The proposed sensor demonstrates notable sensitivity to Hg2+, featuring a detection limit of 16.32 nM and a linear range from 20 nM to 70 nM. The sensor's selectivity was confirmed by analyzing various anions and cations. Moreover, when tested with tap water, river water, and agricultural samples, the sensor exhibited reliable performance, validated by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) analysis. Additionally, CdTe/CdS/ZnS QDs immobilized on micro pads proved effective for on-site water sample analysis, presenting a versatile solution for environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Nanoparticle-based fluorescent probes, typically fabricated by a chemical synthesis route, have been widely used for monitoring trace heavy metals in environments. However, the high-cost and complicated, aggressive fabrication processes restrict their widespread application. In this work, we report the first use of biogenic quantum dots (Bio-QDs) as a highly sensitive, low-cost fluorescent probe for label-free detection of mercury ions (Hg2+), with comparable performance to conventional chemically synthesized counterparts. Fluorescent Bio-QDs with uniform sizes (1.6 ± 0.3 nm) and unique core–shell structure (CdSxSe1–x core and protein- and phosphate-rich capping) were assembled by Escherichia coli cells. The Bio-QDs were extracted and directly used as a Hg2+ probe, which exhibited sensitive, linear fluorescent response to Hg2+ concentration in the range of 1.5–100 nM. Interestingly, it even enable a naked-eye detection of Hg2+ in a higher concentration range of 0.1–10 μM by simply raising the Bio-QD load....
Amplified Fluorescence Detection of Mercury(Ii) Ions (hg2+) Using Target-Induced Dnazyme Cascade with Catalytic and Molecular Beacons

Abstract:In this work, a fluorescent sensing strategy was developed for the detection of mercury(II) ions (Hg2+) in aqueous solution with excellent sensitivity and selectivity using a target-induced DNAzyme cascade with catalytic and molecular beacons (CAMB). In order to construct the biosensor, a Mg2+-dependent DNAzyme was elaborately designed and artificially split into two separate oligonucleotide fragments. In the presence of Hg2+, the specific thymine-Hg2+-thymine (T-Hg2+-T) interaction induced the two fragments to produce the activated Mg2+-dependent DNAzyme, which would hybridize with a hairpin-structured MB substrate to form the CAMB system. Eventually, each target-induced activated DNAzyme could catalyze the cleavage of many MB substrates through true enzymatic multiple turnovers. This would significantly enhance the sensitivity of the Hg2+ sensing system and push the detection limit down to 0.2 nM within a 20 min assay time, much lower than those of most previously reported fluorescence assays. Owning to the strong coordination of Hg2+ to the T-T mismatched pairs, this proposed sensing system exhibited excellent selectivity for Hg2+ detection, even in the presence of 100 times of other interferential metal ions. Furthermore, the applicability of the biosensor for Hg2+ detection in river water samples was demonstrated with satisfactory results. These advantages endow the sensing strategy with a great potential for the simple, rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of Hg2+ from a wide range of real samples.

Abstract:Mercury is one of the most acutely toxic substances at trace level to human health and living thing. Developing a rapid, cheap and water soluble metal sensor for detecting mercury ions at ppb level remains a challenge. Herein, a metal sensor consisting of MPA coated Mndoped ZnSe/ZnS colloidal nanoparticles was utilized to ultrasensitively and selectively detect Hg2+ ions with a low detection limit (0.1 nM) over a dynamic range from 0 to 20 nM. According to strong interaction between thiol(s) and mercury ions, mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) was used as a highly unique acceptor for mercury ions in the as-obtained ultrasensitive sensor. In the presence of mercury ions, colloidal nanoparticles rapidly agglomerated due to changes of surface chemical properties, which results in severe quenching of fluorescent intensity. Meanwhile, we find that the original ligands are separated from the surface of colloidal nanoparticles involving strongly chelation between mercury ion and thiol(s) proved by controlled IR analysis. The result shows that the QD-based metal ions sensor possesses satisfactory precision, high sensitivity and selectivity, and could be applied for the quantification analysis of real samples.
An Improved Synthesis of Water-Soluble Dual Fluorescence Emission Carbon Dots from Holly Leaves for Accurate Detection of Mercury Ions in Living Cells.

Abstract:Background Carbon dots (CDs) emitting near-infrared fluorescence were recently synthesized from green leaves. However, the Hg2+ detection of CDs was limited because of the insufficient water solubility, low fluorescence and poor stability. Methods Dual fluorescence emission water-soluble CD (Dual-CD) was prepared through a solvothermal method from holly leaves and low toxic PEI1.8k. PEG was further grafted onto the surface to improve the water solubility and stability. Results The Dual-CD solution can emit 487 nm and 676 nm fluorescence under single excitation and exhibit high quantum yield of 16.8%. The fluorescence at 678 nm decreased remarkably while the emission at 470 nm was slightly affected by the addition of Hg2+. The ratiometric Hg2+ detection had a wide linear range of 0–100 μM and low detection limit of 14.0 nM. In A549 cells, there was a good linear relation between F487/F676 and the concentration of Hg2+ in the range of 0–60 μM; the detection limit was 477 nM. Furthermore, Dual-CD showed visual fluorescence change under Hg2+. Conclusion Dual-CD has ratiometric responsiveness to Hg2+ and can be applied for quantitative Hg2+ detection in living cells.

Abstract:Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) is a highly toxic and ubiquitous pollutant, whose effective detection has aroused widespread concern. A novel ratiometric fluorescent sensor has been designed to rapidly and efficiently detect Hg 2+ based on blue/red carbon dots (CDs) with environmental friendliness. This sensor was well characterized via TEM, FTIR, XPS, UV–vis, and zeta potential analysis and displayed excellent fluorescence properties and stability. The fluorescence of blue CDs at 447 nm was significantly quenched with the addition of Hg 2+ resulted from the static quenching, whereas that of red CDs at 650 nm remained invariable. A sensitive method for Hg 2+ determination was constructed in the range of 0.05–7.0 nmol mL −1 with optimal conditions, and the detection limit was down to 0.028 nmol mL −1 . Meanwhile, compared to other 17 metal ions, the ratiometric fluorescent sensor exhibited high selectivity for Hg 2+ . Furthermore, satisfied recoveries had also been obtained for measuring trace Hg 2+ in practical environmental samples. This developed ratiometric fluorescent sensor provided a reliable, environmental-friendly, rapid, and efficient platform for the detection of Hg 2+ in environmental applications.

Abstract:As a significant environmental pollutant, Hg2+ has gained widespread concern around the world. In our work, a rapid and elegant fluorescence method based on SYBR GREEN I (SGI) and mercury-specific oligonucleotide (MSO) has been developed for detection of Hg2+. Utilizing the T-Hg2+-T mismatch principle, MSO forms a double-stranded hairpin structure, which can readily embed SGI and produce strong fluorescence. Under optimized conditions including MSO concentration, dye/MSO base ratio, pH value, ionic strength, reaction time and incubation time, a wide linear range (10–100 nM) and a low limit of detection (0.68 nM) were demonstrated. Almost no statistically significant interference for Hg2+ detection was observed among the possible coexisting substances in the water samples, including 15 factors. The recoveries of the three environmental water samples were in the range of 82.8% to 101.8%, indicating that the method was only weakly affected by the environmental matrix and could be applied to the detection of Hg2+ in environmental water samples. This method features potentially low cost, rapid processing, and convenient operation, which indicates considerable promise in practical Hg2+ monitoring.

Abstract:In this study, a highly selective and sensitive composite fluorescence sensor (Y-CODs @PVDF@PVP) was developed for the quantitative and visual detection of Hg 2+ by electrostatic spinning carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyethylene pyrrolidone (PVP). The Y-CODs @PVDF@PVP composite fluorescence sensor exhibited strong yellow fluorescence under ultraviolet light (365 nm), demonstrating stable detection capability for mercury (II) in water samples. The morphology, chemical composition, and optical properties of Y-CODs @PVDF@PVP were thoroughly investigated. Different quenching effects were observed in Y-CODs @PVDF@PVP based on varying concentrations of Hg 2+ , enabling accurate determination of Hg 2+ . The achieved detection limit was 9.27 nM. Both static quenching and dynamic quenching mechanisms contributed to the observed results. Notably, the method successfully detected Hg 2+ in real water samples from Beichuan Lake as well as rice samples, yielding satisfactory outcomes. Furthermore, when combined with software image analysis, quantitative and visual detection of field Hg 2+ levels was accomplished using the composite fluorescence sensor. This research provides valuable insights for developing portable sensors aimed at monitoring harmful substances in water.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a convenient and green strategy for the synthesis of bright and water-soluble carbon dots (CDs) by carbonizing sodium citrate and glutathione together in a hydrothermal method for the first time. Without post surface modification, the as-synthesized CDs display fluorescence quantum yield (QY) as high as 21.03% and show superior stability not only in concentrated salt solutions but also in neutral and alkaline media. The probe exhibits selective and sensitive recognition capability towards mercury ion (Hg2+) in aqueous solution. The fluorescence of CDs can be quenched by Hg2+ through an effective electron energy transfer process. It displays a linear quenching effect toward mercury ion in the concentration range of 0-15μM with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99. The limit of detection is determined to be 25nM at the signal to noise ratio of 3. These attractive merits would enable the extensive applications of this probe in environmental science and analytical chemistry in the future.

Abstract:Background: Specific recognition at trace quantity levels of metal ions without using the costly analytical instrument and a tedious sample preparation method is an extensive concern for environmental monitoring and mitigation. Mercury(II) (Hg2+) has acute toxicity. The development of ion-selective fluorescence sensors for the selective detection of Hg2+ is an essential task to accomplish. Objective: The aim of this study is to detect Hg2+ in an aqueous medium. A fluorescence sensor (DP) based on Schiff base was designed and utilized to detect Hg2+. Method: Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transformed Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to learn the sensing mechanism between sensor DP and Hg2+ cations. Result: When Hg2+ ions were added to the sensor DP, it showed a dramatic fluorescent “turn-on” response for Hg2+ in dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. And the detection limit (LOD) of DP for Hg2+ in aqueous media (1.0 mol L-1) was 2.23 × 10-8 mol L-1. Conclusion: In summary, an aminoantipyrine-containing Schiff base fluorescent chemosensor for extraordinary recognition of Mercury(II) was designed and synthesized via a simple one-step pathway and led to intermolecular self-assembly through π-π stacking interactions. And the sensor DP could fluorescently “turn on” when the Hg2+ cation was added. The limitation of Hg2+ was 2.23×10-8 M, which indicated that the sensor DP could be useful as a highly selective and sensitive sensor for detecting Hg2+ ions in an aqueous medium by the strong interaction with DP. Notably, the sensor DP was used as a fluorescent display material with satisfactory results.

Abstract:The pollution problem caused by mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) is becoming increasingly serious, and it is imperative to establish a methodology that is tailored to the precise identification of Hg 2+ . Phosphorus-doped biomass carbon quantum dots (P-BCQDs) with cyan fluorescence were synthesized via a hydrothermal approach, utilizing willow leaves as the carbon precursor and sodium pyrophosphate as a modifying agent. The morphology and optical properties of P-BCQDs were analyzed, and the results showed that P-BCQDs had a spherical structure, uniform dispersion, and particle size at 2.0±0.5 nm. Based on the principle that P-BCQDs bind to Hg 2+ to burst the fluorescence, the P-BCQDs have an optimal time of 2 min for the detection of Hg 2+ , and the optimal pH = 7, with c Hg2+ ranging from 0–20 μ mol/L. The linear relationship was achieved with the detection limit of 9 nmol/L. The spiked recovery experiments were conducted in actual water samples. The recoveries exhibited a range of 95.0% to 105.0%, accompanied by Sr ranging from 1.6% to 2.8%, which indicated that the proposed methodology is applicable for the quantification of Hg 2+ .

Abstract:Mercury (Hg2+) is a highly toxic element and can seriously affect human health. This work proposed a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor with a Z-scheme Fe2O3/CdS heterostructure and two thymine-rich DNA strands (DNA-1 and Au@DNA-2) for sensitive detection of Hg2+. The light excitation of the Fe2O3/CdS composite accelerated the electron transfer among Fe2O3, CdS, and the electrode to produce a stable photocurrent response. Upon the recognition of Hg2+ to thymine bases (T) in two DNA strands to form a stable T-Hg2+-T biomimetic structure, the photocurrent response increased with the increasing concentration of Hg2+ due to the opening of electronic transmission channels from Au nanoparticles to Fe2O3/CdS nanocomposite. Under the optimal conditions screened by the Box-Behnken experiments, the proposed PEC sensor showed excellent analytical performance for Hg2+ detection with high sensitivity, a detection limit of 0.20 pM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, high selectivity, a detectable concentration range of 1 pM-100 nM, and acceptable stability. The good recovery and low relative standard deviation for the analysis of Hg2+ in lake and tap water samples demonstrated the potential application of the designed Z-scheme Fe2O3/CdS heterostructure in the PEC detection of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Mercury ions (Hg2+) are recognized as the typical inorganic contamination that can cause severe damage to the environment and humans. In this paper, boron-doped carbon quantum dots (B-CQDs) with a fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 10.4% and good photoluminescent properties were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using citric acid and histidine as the carbon source and borax as the provider of boron. The obtained B-CQDs exhibited a bright blue emission under excitation wavelength of 365 nm. As a fluorescent probe, it appears excellent selectivity and sensitivity to assay Hg2+. When Hg2+ were added to B-CQDs, its bright blue fluorescence was obviously quenched. Under optimum conditions, the sensor shows a wide linear range (0 ~ 150 μM) and a low detection limit (2.5 μM). Interestingly, the quenched fluorescence of B-CQDs containing Hg2+ could be turned on by adding reducing agent EDTA-2Na or I-. Furthermore, it was applied successfully to assay Hg2+ in real sample. More importantly, B-CQDs was found to be nontoxic and can be used as bioimaging agent for MCF-7 cell labeling. The possible fluorescence quenching mechanisms of the probe are also discussed in detail. This study provides a new approach for fabricating a multifunctional fluorescent probe and a prospective application in environmental monitoring.
Photoelectrochemical Sensor with a Z-Scheme Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>/CdS Heterostructure for Sensitive Detection of Mercury Ions

Abstract:Mercury (Hg2+) is a highly toxic element and can seriously affect human health. This work proposed a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor with a Z-scheme Fe2O3/CdS heterostructure and two thymine-rich DNA strands (DNA-1 and Au@DNA-2) for sensitive detection of Hg2+. The light excitation of the Fe2O3/CdS composite accelerated the electron transfer among Fe2O3, CdS, and the electrode to produce a stable photocurrent response. Upon the recognition of Hg2+ to thymine bases (T) in two DNA strands to form a stable T-Hg2+-T biomimetic structure, the photocurrent response increased with the increasing concentration of Hg2+ due to the opening of electronic transmission channels from Au nanoparticles to Fe2O3/CdS nanocomposite. Under the optimal conditions screened by the Box-Behnken experiments, the proposed PEC sensor showed excellent analytical performance for Hg2+ detection with high sensitivity, a detection limit of 0.20 pM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, high selectivity, a detectable concentration range of 1 pM-100 nM, and acceptable stability. The good recovery and low relative standard deviation for the analysis of Hg2+ in lake and tap water samples demonstrated the potential application of the designed Z-scheme Fe2O3/CdS heterostructure in the PEC detection of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) can cause damage to human health, and thus, the study of the detection of Hg 2+ is extraordinarily important in daily life. This work reported a fluorescence biosensor for the detection of Hg 2+ . The key point of this strategy was that the fluorescence of carbon quantum dots made from pomegranate peel (P-CQDs) was quenched by hemin, and restored after G-quadruplex binding with hemin. The presence of Hg 2+ caused thymine (T)-rich DNA fragments to form T-Hg 2+ -T mismatches, and this change allowed the release of G-quadruplex. G-quadruplex could change the fluorescence of hemin/P-CQDs. P-CQDs exhibited excellent properties through characterization analysis, such as transmission electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared. This proposed fluorescence detection strategy established the linear ranges of Hg 2+ from 1 nM to 50 nM. In conclusion, this simple biosensor had the advantages of strong sensitivity, high selectivity, and low cost for Hg 2+ detection in environmental water samples.

Abstract:Mercury is a common heavy metal element in natural systems and is highly toxic to the human body. Herein, a novel colorimetric detection of Hg2+ ions is proposed based on the aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) induced by carbon quantum dots (CDs) with the assistance of glutathione (GSH). In this sensing system, the AuNP/CDs composite forms through Au-N bonds. Simultaneously, the color of the solution turns from wine red to blue. The well-dispersed AuNPs can be restored after the addition of GSH, because GSH competes with CDs to bind onto the surface of AuNPs and protect AuNPs from aggregation. In the presence of Hg2+ ions, GSH can chelate with Hg2+ to form a complex, which subsequently enables CDs to facilitate the aggregation of the AuNPs again. Therefore, according to the red-to-blue color change, a colorimetric sensor is established for the sensitive and selective detection of Hg2+ with a detection limit of 7.5 nM. Moreover, this sensor is successfully used to detect Hg2+ spiked in environmental water. This very simple and cost-effective strategy will promote the development of a colorimetric sensor for the determination of other metal ions in biological and environmental fields.

Abstract:The present study introduces a novel fluorescent sensor with an overtone peak reference designed for the detection of mercury (II) ions (Hg 2+ ) and hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S). The study proposes two novel response mechanisms that hinges on the synergistic effect of cation exchange dissociation (CED) and photo-induced electron transfer (PET). This sensor exhibits a remarkable detection limit of 2.9 nM for Hg 2+ . Additionally, the sensor reacts with H 2 S to generate nickel sulfide (NiS) semiconductor nanoparticles, which amplify the fluorescence signal and enable a detection limit of 3.1 nM for H 2 S. The detection limit for H 2 S is further improved to 29.1 pM through the surface functionalization of the nanomaterial with pyridine groups (increasing reactivity) and chelation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which enhances the sensor's specificity. This improvement is primarily due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of AuNPs and their affinity for H 2 S. The single-emission strategy can yield skewed results due to environmental changes, whereas the overtone peak reference strategy enhances result accuracy and reliability by detecting environmental interference through reference emission peaks. In another observation, the low-toxicity dihydropyrene-bipyridine nanorods (TPP-BPY) has been successfully utilized for both endogenous and exogenous H 2 S detection in vivo using a mouse model. The successful development of TPP-BPY is expected to provide an effective tool for studying the role of H 2 S in biomedical systems.
