Abstract:In order to improve nitrogen removal for rural wastewater, a novel two-stage hybrid system, consisting of a vertical flow trickling filter (VFTF) and a horizontal flow multi-soil-layering (HFMSL) bioreactor was developed. The performance of the apparatus was observed under various carbon-nitrogen ratios and water spraying frequencies separately. The maximum removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) for the hybrid system was 92.8% while the removal rates of CODCr, ammonium (NH4(+)-N), and total phosphorus (TP) were 94.1%, 96.1%, 92.0% respectively, and the corresponding effluent concentrations were 3.61, 21.20, 1.91, and 0.33 mg L(-1). The horizontal flow mode for MSL led the system to denitrifying satisfactorily as it ensured relatively long hydraulic retention time (HRT), ideal anoxic condition and adequate organic substrates supply. Also, higher water spraying frequency benefited intermittent feeding system for pollutants removal. Shock loading test indicated that the hybrid system could operate well even at hydraulic shock loadings.

Abstract:To evaluate the feasibility of using multi-soil-layer (MSL) system and subsurface flow constructed wetland to treat the wastewater of marine cultured Penaeus vannamei and to determine the suitable process for the local aquaculture wastewater pollution characteristics. In this study, MSL system and four constructed wetland systems with Spartina anglica, Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia and unplanted system were evaluated for their potentials of pollutants removal capacity. The results showed the average removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH(4)+ -N) and nitrate (NO-(3) -N) by MSL system were 80. 38% ± 2. 14% , 68. 14% ± 3.51% , 40.79% ± 3. 10% , 42. 68% ± 2.90% and 54. 19% ± 5. 15% , respectively. Additionally, the ability of pollutants removal of other four wetland systems decreased in the order: Spartina anglica, Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia and unplanted system.
Effect on Simultaneous Removal of Ammonia, Nitrate, and Phosphorus Via Advanced Stacked Assembly Biological Filter for Rural Domestic Sewage Treatment

Abstract:The discharge of ammonia–nitrogen (NH3–N), total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total phosphorus (TP) in rural sewage usually exceeds the Pollutant Discharge Standard for Urban Sewage Treatment Plants (GB18918-2002). Efficient and cost-effective removal of these pollutants cannot be simultaneously realized using conventional rural sewage treatment methods. Thus, an assembled biological filter (D50 × W50 × H113 cm), including a phosphorus removal layer filled with solid polymeric ferric sulfate and alternating aerobic-anaerobic layers, is proposed herein. The aerobic (anerobic) layers were filled with zeolite (zeolite and composite soil) at different intervals. This system was used for the treatment of synthetic sewage having COD: 122.0–227.0 mg/L; NH3–N: 29.1–47.0 mg/L; TN: 28.0–58.0 mg/L; and TP: 2.0–3.8 mg/L. Based on optimal operation conditions (40 L/h reflow rate, without artificial aeration, and 12-h operation cycle), the system showed NH3–N, TN, COD, and TP removal efficiencies of 87.1 ± 8.1, 83.4 ± 7.9, 91.0 ± 9.4, and 80.0 ± 6.4%, respectively. Further, in the pilot-scale test, under the same optimal parameters, the removal efficiencies of NH3–N, TN, COD, and TP were 78.9 ± 8.1, 75.4 ± 7.9, 82 ± 9.4, and 76 ± 6.4%, respectively. Furthermore, in the different functional units of the system, a large number of functional bacteria capable of efficiently facilitating the simultaneous removal of the different pollutants from sewage were identified. Therefore, this proposed system, which complies with current environmental discharge regulations, can be a more sustainable approach for the treatment of unattended rural sewage.
An anoxic-aerobic system combined with integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland to highly enhance simultaneous organics and nutrients removal in rural China

Abstract:The biggest problem in the treatment of rural domestic sewage is that the existing treatment projects require the big investment and the high operation and maintenance costs. To overcome this problem, cost-effective, low-consuming, resource-recovering and easy-maintenance technologies are urgently demanded. To this end, a novel anoxic-aerobic system combined with integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland (IVFCW) with source separation was proposed for treating rural sewage in this study. The anoxic-aerobic system contained the anoxic filter (ANF), two-stage waterwheel driving rotating biological contactors (ts-WDRBCs). Key parameters of ts-WDRBCs were identified to be 0.6 m drop height and 4 r/min rotational speed found on oxygenated clean water experiments. Then, the optimal operating parameters were determined to be 200% reflux ratio and 3 h hydraulic retention time of ts-WDRBCs. During the 80-day operation, 91.58 ± 1.86% COD, 96.17 ± 0.92% NH4+-N, 82.71 ± 3.92% TN and 92.28 ± 2.78% TP were removed under the optimal operating parameters. Compared with other treatment technologies, this combined bio-ecological system could achieve the higher simultaneous organics and nutrients removal. The effluent NO3--N/NH4+-N concentration ratio of ts-WDRBCs was 2.15 ± 0.54, which was proved to be beneficial for plants growth. The microbial communities coexisted in each section ensured the desired removal performance of combined bio-ecological system. Summarily, high performance together with low investment costs and cheap operation costs are characteristics that make this system a promising and competitive alternative for rural sewage treatment.
The use of biochar and crushed mortar in treatment wetlands to enhance the removal of nutrients from sewage

Abstract:An experimental study was carried out using in pilot-scale constructed wetland systems, operated in parallel to treat raw sewage. Each system consisted of a vertical flow (VF) unit that was filled with biochar as the main media, followed by a horizontal flow (HF) unit filled with crushed cement mortar. Hydraulic loading (HL) ranged 340-680 mm/day was applied on the VF wetland units, where high total nitrogen (TN) mass removal rate (20-23 g N/m2 d) was obtained, demonstrating that biochar media had a beneficial effect on the degradation of nitrogenous pollutants. Total phosphorus (TP) removal percentage (concentration based) was ≥ 86% in HF wetlands packed with mortar materials. In one system, the flow direction of the sewage was directed by the deployment of downflow pipes and vertical baffles, aiming to facilitate the formation of aerobic and anaerobic zones in the wetland matrices. The effects of such arrangement were analyzed by comparing pollutant removal efficiencies in the two systems. On average, 99, 96, 93, and 86 percentage removals were obtained for ammonia (NH4-N), TN, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and TP, respectively, during the experiments. Biochar and crushed mortar proved to be a highly effective combination as media in subsurface flow constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Three full-scale constructed wetlands (CWs), namely vertical flow (VFCW), surface flow (SFCW), and horizontal flow (HFCW) systems, were combined in a series process to form a hybrid CW, which was used for the treatment performance of domestic-industrial mixed wastewater and investigated over a three-year period. The hybrid CW demonstrated that it is effective and stable during the long-term treatment of high-loading mixed wastewater under different operation years, season changes, and technology processes, with the average removal efficiencies of suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and total phosphorous being 84, 40, 54, 54, 70, 40, and 46%, respectively. The effluent quality of the hybrid CW reached the highest discharge standard for wastewater treatment plants. First, a variety of pollutants from the mixed wastewater were effectively removed in the subsurface processes (VFCW and HFCW) via substrate adsorption and degradation of the attached biofilm. The higher dissolved oxygen content and oxygen transfer capacity values in the VFCW were favourable for the occurrence of aerobic pathways (such as nitrification and inorganic phosphorus oxidation). In addition, with the large consumption of oxygen in the previous process, the oxygen-enriching capacity of the SFCW processes, provided aerobic potential for the next stage. In particular, the plant debris in the SFCW temporarily increased the organics and suspended solids, further increasing the C/N ratio, which was beneficial for denitrification as the main nitrogen removal pathway in the HFCW.

Abstract:A medium-scale pilot system (vertical/reverse-vertical flow constructed wetland) for the treatment of domestic wastewater was established in the greening belt of the residential district in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. During the whole monitoring period the average values of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH(4)-N), total phosphorus (TP) and turbidity (TURB) were found to be 94.79%,76.34%,86.62%,71.58% 90.76% and 95.94%. This type of constructed wetland could be appropriately used for treatment of domestic wastewater.

Abstract:The aim of the present investigation was to achieve an efficient treatment for black wastewater for non-restricted reuse. The treatment included sedimentation followed by horizontal flow constructed wetland (HF-CW), and finally chemical coagulation using magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. For the wetland, the average organic loading rate (OLR) was 42.83 biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)/m2day and 71.30 g chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m2 day, while average surface loading rate was 0.185 m3/m2 day. The obtained results revealed that removal percentage of COD, BOD, and total suspended solids (TSS) by sedimentation followed by processing through wetlands was 80.3, 81.6, and 80%, which corresponds to 76, 42.56, and 54 mg/l, respectively. When magnetite nanoparticles were added to the HF-CW effluent at the optimum dose of 25 mg/l in combination with 10 mg/l FeCl3, the overall removal rate increased to reach 95.9, 99.1, 99.17, 92.3, 94.3, 94.3, and 91.3% for turbidity, COD, BOD, TSS, phosphate (PO4), total nitrogen (TN), and sulphide, respectively. The corresponding residual concentrations were 5 NTU, 8, 5, 32, 0.07, 1, and 1.04 mg/l, respectively. According to the national and international regulations, the present final treated effluent can be safely reused as a non-restricted source for agriculture purposes. The overall results revealed that the implemented study is simple, efficient, reliable, and economical, particularly for remote areas, according to the non-restricted reuse requirements.

Abstract:<p>China's toilet modernization has enabled thousands of villages to separate their feces and urines from the greywater or washing wastewater. Human feces and urine are usually used as raw materials for fertilizers, but the lack of understanding of discharge characteristics of washing wastewater in China rural areas affects the development of treatment technology and the reuse of treated water. In this study, a village in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River was selected to investigate the discharge characteristics of washing wastewater, and four kinds of subsurface constructed wetlands were used for treatment and reuse. The results showed that the production of washing wastewater in rural aeras was 59∼232 L/(cap .d), with an average of 121 L/(cap .d). The bathing wastewater contributed the highest proportion of 46.19%. COD was identified as the key pollutants with average concentration of 337mg/L. Compared with domestic wastewater, the concentrations of TN and TP were much lower with the average of 11.1mg/L and 0.6mg/L respectively. After treated by the constructed wetland with ceramsite, volcanic rock and anthracite as composite substrate, the effluent water met the requirements of paddy field crop irrigation, and the removal rates of COD, TN and TP achieved 61.5%, 68.8% and 70.5% respectively. Wetland plants and modular design had significant positive effects on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorous, but little effect on COD removal. The fecal coliforms in the effluent were all lower than 4.0 lg (MPN/L) in the four constructed wetlands, indicating they were not the limiting factors for irrigation reuse.</p>

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used to treat the effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) due to their energy-saving and environmentally friendly advantages. Wetland macrophyte litter and sludge are wastes produced by CWs and WWTPs, respectively. However, there are few studies on the reuse of sludge and macrophyte litter as CW filling materials. In this study, sewage sludge and cattail litter were selected as raw materials to prepare biochar, which was used as CW filling materials to enhance the advanced treatment of secondary effluent. The results showed that the sludge biochar CWs (SBC-CWs) and the cattail biochar CWs (CBC-CWs) possessed better total nitrogen removal efficiency (91% and 81%, respectively) compared with the control (67%). Furthermore, SBC-CWs significantly improved total phosphorus removal efficiency by 20% than that of the control (p < 0.05), and reduced nitrous oxide emissions by 66% compared with the control (p < 0.05). The dissolved organic matter (DOM) released in the biochar was beneficial to replenish carbon sources and accommodate adaptive microorganisms. Electrochemical characterization and molecular methods revealed that the sludge biochar had stronger electron transfer capacity (ETC) than the cattail biochar, which could better promote the activities of key enzymes of the pollutant removal procedure. High-throughput sequencing showed that microorganisms such as Thaurea, Rhodocyclaceae, Hydrogenophaga and Fusibacter related to nitrogen removal were well enriched in the SBC-CWs and CBC-CWs. This research shows the potential for the simultaneous energy-saving advanced treatment of WWTP tailwater and waste resource recovery.

Abstract:Constructed wetlands are ecosystems that use plants and microorganisms to remediate pollution in soil and water. In this study, two parallel pilot-scale vertical flow wetland and horizontal flow wetland (VF-HF) systems were implemented to investigate the treatment performance and microorganism community structure in the secondary effluent of an industrial park wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with a loading rate of 100 mm/day near the Yangtze River in Suzhou City, East China. Removal efficiencies of 82.3, 69.8, 77.8, and 32.3 were achieved by the VF-HF systems for ammonium nitrogen (NH4 +-N), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD), respectively. The VF system specialized in COD and NH4 +-N removal (73.6 and 79.2 %), whereas the HF system mainly contributed to TN removal (63.5 %). The effluents in all seasons are capable of achieving the “surface water environmental quality standard” (GB3838-2002) grade IV. In the VF system, the 16S gene and nirK gene were significantly correlated with depth, with the 16S gene showing significant correlations with the dissolved oxygen (DO) level (r = 0.954, p < 0.05), which was determined by real-time PCR and high-throughput sequencing. Many types of bacteria capable of biodegradation, including nitrifiers, denitrifiers, and polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degraders (improvement of the BOD5/COD ratio), were observed, and they contributed to approximately 90 % of the nitrogen removal in the VF-HF system.
Sustainable treatment scheme for in-situ remediation of contaminated drains using engineered natural systems.

Abstract:Ensuring water security in resource-constrained, densely populated regions is a significant challenge globally. Due to insufficient treatment infrastructure, untreated sewage discharge into drainage channels is prevalent, especially in developing countries. This leads to the pollution of already dwindling water bodies and threatens future water availability. In this context, in-situ treatment within drains using nature-based systems is an attractive option. This study evaluates microbial bioremediation and phytoremediation as engineered natural solutions for in-stream treatment of municipal wastewater. A three-stage treatment system consisting of anoxic biofilm, aerobic biofilm, and hydroponic floating wetlands was adopted. Each stage was optimized for operational parameters through batch and continuous flow studies. The anoxic biofilm system using autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) as the attachment media, at an optimized hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2 h, showed the best performance with respect to COD removal. Comparable COD removal was observed in both externally aerated and non-aerated aerobic biofilm systems with coir fibre at 6 h HRT. However, aerated system outperformed non-aerated system at low HRTs. The hydroponic system with Canna indica effectively removed residual ammonia-N with an HRT of 2 h. The sequential continuous flow studies employing the optimized conditions showed significant removals of COD (86%) and ammonia-N (97.6%). The results highlight that locally available materials having a high specific surface area can be used as biofilm supports for COD removal, and floating wetlands employing indigenous macrophytes can be an ideal choice for in-situ nutrient removal. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) showed that the developed system did not have direct significant impacts on freshwater eco-toxicity and eutrophication. The proposed hybrid treatment system can be implemented as modular units without major drainage modifications or energy-intensive operations. The study, therefore, finds potential application in densely populated settlements in low-income countries where systematic sewage treatment options remain inadequate.

Abstract:The nature-based, hybrid vertical-flow constructed wetland (H-VFCW) sequenced with an upflow anaerobic fixed biofilm reactor (UAFBR) was developed to treat blackwater for single households. The H-VFCW filter bed layer's redox zonation and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were designed optimally with the potential of simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and enhanced biological phosphorous removal. The UAFBR optimisation for residual nitrate removal was based on the carbon–nitrogen ratio, HRT, and biofilm growth on carriers. Complete disinfection was achieved by optimised in situ electrochlorination by dosing 0.16% sodium chloride, with 20 min of electrolysis and 44.48 Am−2 of current density. The power consumption was 1.81 ± 0.14 KWhm−3 (lower than any employed in situ electrochlorination disinfection). The ammonia volatilisation method was studied on the granular activated charcoal column (GACC) to remove residual total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) as the final treatment step. The integrated treatment system removed 98.63 ± 0.15% chemical oxygen demand (COD), 97.09 ± 0.19% total nitrogen (TN), 93.96 ± 0.34% nitrate (NO3−), 97.92 ± 0.2% TAN, 99.62 ± 1% orthophosphate (PO43−), 87.49 ± 0.36% total suspended solids (TSS), and 100% Coliform, with the final effluent pH of 8.4 ± 0.08. The microbial and functional annotation diversity of the UAFBR biofilm was studied. The integrated treatment system achieved the Central Pollution Control Board (India) effluent discharge standards.

Demonstrative Study on Treatment of Domestic Sewage by Horizontal Subsurface-flow Constructed Wetland

Abstract:A wastewater treatment system with horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetland as the main process was used to treat the domestic sewage which was characterized by small quantity and variable sewage quality,at one resident site of the Tuha Oilfield,where the usable land is ample.The results show the constructed wetland system can satisfy the treatment requirement of the domestic sewage in northwest oilfield,and the average removal efficiencies of SS,COD,BOD5 and NH3-N are about 95%,75%,75% and 95% respectively. The average concentration of BOD5 in the effluent is less than 10 mg/L,and the effluent quality can meet the requirement for landscaping water.Through the reasonable design,the effluent and the sludge from the treatment system are both reused for landscaping,achieving zero pollution discharge.The treatment system has low operation cost and easy management.The demonstrative wastewater treatment system embodies the sustainable design concept.

Abstract:The horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SFCW) were built for advanced treatment of the tailwater with high-nitrogen low-carbon from a municipal sewage treatment plant in Taiyuan. The results showed that it spent two months from the start period to the stable operation period. In the stable operation period, the effluent of the wetland system achieved the IV level of GB 3838-2002, excepted TN. And TN achieved the 1A level standard of GB 18918-2002. Wetland system effluent can be reused for the waterscape. Every pollutant removal efficiency of constructed wetland system was bed 3> bed 2>bed 1.In this system, the impact of the filler was greater than that of the plants on the treatment of pollutants. The optimal packing order was the zeolite, the gravel and the slag. And the optimal plant planting order was reed, cattail, canna, yellow iris and reeds.

Abstract:Septage refers to the semi-liquid waste material that accumulates in septic tanks and other onsite sanitation systems. It is composed of a complex mixture of human excreta, wastewater, and various solid particles. Septage is a potential source of water pollution owing to presence of high organic content, significant pathogen concentrations, and a range of nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. The harmful impacts of septage pollution poses significant risks to public health through the contamination of drinking water sources, eutrophication of water bodies and spread of water borne diseases. Conventional septage treatment technologies often face limitations such as high operational costs, energy requirements, and the need for extensive infrastructure. Therefore, with an aim to treat septage through an alternative cost effective and energy-efficient technology, a laboratory-scale constructed wetland (CW) system (0.99 m2) consisting of a sludge drying bed and a vertical flow wetland bed was utilized for the treatment of septage. The sludge drying bed and vertical flow beds were connected in series and filled with a combination of gravel with varying sizes (ranging from 5 to 40 mm) and washed sand. Canna indica plants were cultivated on both beds to facilitate phytoremediation process. The system was operated with intermittent dosing of 30 Ltrs of septage every day for 2 months. The HRT of the system was fixed at 48 h. The average inlet loads of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) were measured as 150 ± 65.7 g m-2 day-1, 713 ± 443.9 g m-2 day-1, and 309 ± 66.3 g m-2 day-1, respectively. After treatment, the final effluent had an average load of 6 g m-2 day-1 for BOD5, 15 g m-2 day-1 for COD, and 51 g m-2 day-1 for TSS, indicating that the CW system achieved an average removal efficiency of 88% for BOD, 87% for COD, and 65% for TSS. The average load of total coliforms and helminthes eggs in the influent was recorded as 4 × 108 Colony-Forming Units (CFU) m-2 day-1 and 3 × 107 eggs m-2 day-1, respectively. However, the CW system demonstrated significant effectiveness in reducing microbial contamination, with an average removal efficiency of 99% for both total coliforms and helminthes eggs. The vertical flow constructed wetland system, equipped with pretreatment by sludge drying bed, has proven to be efficient in treatment of septage.
Assessment of nutrient removal and microbial population dynamics in a non-aerated vertical baffled flow constructed wetland for contaminated water treatment with composite biochar addition

Abstract:A novel composite biochar (NCB) was produced from the pyrolysis of co-fermentation products of sewage sludge, food wastes and rice straw, and exhibited higher nitrogen and phosphorus adsorption capacity due to the larger surface area (14.7 m2 g-1) and higher Ca content (51753.7 mg kg-1) than single rice straw biochar. The addition of NCB was then investigated in a non-aerated vertical baffled flow constructed wetland (VBFCW) for contaminated water treatment. The VBFCW with NCB addition significantly improved CODMn, NH4+-N, TN and TP removal efficiencies of 83.3 ± 5.3%, 95.9 ± 3.4%, 28.0 ± 4.0% and 59.5 ± 11.8%, respectively, at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 d. In addition, the TN and TP removal rates at a decreased HRT of 2 d were much higher than those at an HRT of 3 d without NCB addition. The presence of NCB in the VBFCW system enhanced nutrient adsorption and improved the enrichment of bacteria for organic and nitrogen removal mainly including the genera Bacillus and Lactococcus.
Performance study of vegetated sequencing batch coal slag bed treating domestic wastewater in suburban area

Abstract:A practical and affordable wastewater treatment system serving small community in suburban areas was studied. The system was a vegetated sequencing batch coal slag bed integrated with the rhythmical movement of wastewater and air like that of a sequencing batch reactor. The removal mechanisms capitalized on the pollutant removal process in conventional constructed wetland. Cyperus alternifolius was planted into the coal slag bed to form a novel plant-soil-microbial interactive system. Nutrients in the domestic wastewater, which cause environmental nuisance like eutrophication, were targeted to be eliminated by the process design. Operated with the contact time of 18 h, the treatment systems achieved around 60% removal efficiency for carbonaceous matters. The removals of ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus were about 50% and 40%, respectively, while the removal of total suspended solids was approaching 80%. From the current study, the construction cost of the vegetated sequencing batch coal slag bed was 256 RMB/m3 and the operation cost was 0.13 RMB/m3. With the advantages of ease of operation, low costs, desirable treatment efficiency and aesthetic value, the vegetated sequencing batch coal slag bed is proposed to be an alternative for onsite domestic wastewater treatment in suburban areas.
Viability of a Single-Stage Unsaturated-Saturated Granular Activated Carbon Biofilter for Greywater Treatment

Abstract:Compared with conventionally collected sewage, source-diverted greywater has a higher potential for on-site treatment and reuse due to its lower contaminant levels and large volume. A new design of granular activated carbon (GAC) biofilters was developed by incorporating unsaturated and saturated zones in a single stage to introduce an efficient, passive, and easy-to-operate technology for greywater on-site treatment at the household scale. The design was customized for its intended application considering various aspects including the reactor’s configuration, packing media, and feeding strategy. With the highest hydraulic and organic loadings of 1.2 m3 m−2 d−1 and 3.5 kg COD m−2 d−1, respectively, and the shortest retention time of 2.4 h, the system maintained an average total chemical oxygen demand removal rate of 94% with almost complete removal of nutrients throughout its 253 days of operation. The system showed a range of reduction efficacy towards five surrogates representing viruses, bacteria, and Cryptosporidium and Giardia (oo)cysts. A well-functioning biofilm was successfully developed, and its mass and activity increased over time with the highest values observed at the top layers. The key microbes within the biofilter were revealed. Feasibility of the proposed technology was investigated, and implications for design and operation were discussed.

Abstract:There were significant differences in the working efficiency and mechanism of constructed wetlands between low temperature and suitable temperature conditions. This study designed a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HFCW) and a vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland (VFCW) to explore their performance differences in advanced treatment of sewage based on contaminant degradation analysis including the removal of organic matters, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP), as well as the analysis of microbial community structure. The results showed that when the COD concentration of influent was between 37.50 to 80.00 mg·L-1, the concentration of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were within the first level A criteria specified in the discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant at the continuous flow of 2 m3·d-1:①Both HFCW and VFCW showed stable degradation ability of organic matter in influent and good resistance to high organic load. ②Supplementation of the carbon source significantly improved the nitrogen removal efficiency of two subsurface flow constructed wetlands. HFCW achieved the average removal rate of TN at 76.01%, and the average removal rate of TN by VFCW reached 71.69% after the carbon addition. In contrast, dosage of an external carbon source showed limited effect on phosphorus removal. Furthermore, it worked more effectively for performance improvement of HFCW than that of VFCW. ③The analysis of microbial community structure in wetland substrate and plant rhizosphere samples revealed that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Verrucomicrobia were the dominant phylum in two series of wetland samples. For the dominant microbiota at the genus level, there were more significant differences in microbial community structure in wetland substrate samples than that in plant rhizosphere samples. Hydrogenophaga, Erysipelothrix, and Devosia contributed the most to the differences between the microbial communities of HFCW and VFCW. Overall, the species diversity and abundance of microbial samples from VFCW was higher than those from HFCW.
